Having read all the reviews I knew there was criticism of the build which proved to be true. As a gravel cleaner it is powerful and better than cheaper battery powered models, yet it needs improvement. Given its power the cartridge fills and blocks quickly, with water spraying out of the top (quite a surprise). An alternative by-pass should be possible. Fluval also need to develop a means of catching the larger crap that gets dragged up – I used a net to hoist it out when the cleaner is turned off – but there should be a built in remedy. The LED seems pretty pointless and I found it impossible to distinguish between the 2 speed settiungs. At this price a spare cartridge and some liners would also have been useful. l doubt I will be buying any Fluval liners as they seem quite overpriced compared with making my own filter pads. No doubt I will get good use from the Fluval Provac but when you buy a Ferrari you do expect to get a spare wheel and brakes that work.peteparis1949
After reading some reviews, I thought I would go ahead and give this product a chance, I truly wish I hadn’t wasted my time nor my money. The water seems to go right up and through making my aquarium, extremely cloudy and murky. I don’t really notice that it sucks much up. There is some that goes up into it but it doesn’t clean enough that I was really excited about it. The worst of all is it seems that somehow water gets everywhere. I don’t know exactly how this is but when you take the product out it just seems to leak water to the point that I had to start making sure I had an extra bucket and a towel nearby. Maybe it would be better if this product didn’t have a power cord as it seems to get in the way quite a bit . in addition this machine is quite loud as well. Just all in all a poor choice and poor design not a good impression for my first experience with this company.Kelz22
This is a really great product!! All aquarium owners should own one. It's extremely easy to use and a very effective gravel cleaner. Also works well as for pumping water out of your aquarium for water changes. (In case anyone is wondering its 8.5W of power isn't enough to pump water from floor level back into the aquarium….but I didn't purchase it for that purpose). I was curious as to whether is could so I had to try it. The filters can be squeezed clean under a running tap and used again and again. Before the debris reaches the main filter element in the Provac there is a plastic slotted cone shaped filter. The larger lumps of debris collect on this. When the 'on/off' button is switched to the 'off' position during operation the large lumps immediately drop off this and back into the aquarium. To overcome this I place a fine mesh net under this gravel cleaner when switching it 'off', to collect that final small amount of debris.speed_trip

I have a 55 gal community tank and this product is excellent for weekly cleanings of waste and detritus of gravel. I used to clean the gravel using a siphon and during water changes but this is 100% better and more convenient. Firstly, the length is perfect for a 55 gal tank so your hand stays out of the water. The suction is excellent. I have medium to small gravel and it only lifts gravel just enough to agitate it and help vacuum sub surface waste. It is rather quiet and it does not bother the fish. Most fish actually follow it around and wait to pick up an morsels stirred up by the cleaning action. You do have to be weary not to accidentally trap any small curious fish while you are cleaning, but the on / off switch is very conveniently located just in case. It takes me less than 15 min to clean the whole tank. Cleaning is a breeze. The unit comes apart very easily and rinses under your faucet. Once you remove the screen section, best to remove both end-caps and then rinse the screen both inside and outside. NOTE:1, Material that is too fine for the screen to filter will be returned into your water so your tank will get a little cloudy for a bit, but depending on your main filter, most of this material will be filtered out or settle down within an hour. Thus, do not clean just before you have company or want to show off your aquarium. NOTE: 2, when lifting cleaner out of your tank, keep it vertical as it retains water due to suction, until the end is out of the water, at which point the water is released. If you are leaning it outward when you remove it, it may splash some water outside the tank (minimal). NOTE:3, When rinsing screen, do not push your fingers on the screen itself as this can detach the screen from its frame. NOTE:4, When removing the clear end suction unit from the motor unit for rinsing, do not twist too hard as the attachment tabs could be broken. Overall this is a great product for me and makes cleaning, fast, quiet and convenient with next to no mess and complete control of the process. The unit appears very robust and is very easy to use. Bought this to replace the self same product which I have been using for about the last ten years. The design is exactly the same as previously and it does an excellent job of cleaning the gravel without removing water at the same time so very useful for routine surface cleaning in between water changes. Well made and fully waterproof, it can be used with the extension on or off. My only comment, which I made ten years ago as well, is that it would be good if both sections of the cleaning tube had the 'toothed' profile. However, this in no way detracts from it functionality and I have no hesitation in recommending it. OK, it's not cheap, but given that I've used the old one for a minimum of once a week for the last ten years, I think it good value for money.shefflich

This accomplished the goal of being able to vacuum my substrate and do water changes without just using a cup, but it drives me nuts trying to get it started. You have to put the end in a bucket first. Then take the tube and fill it up sideways. Then lift it into the air above your head until it starts to go down and then get it back in the water sideways IMMEDIATELY or the auction won't start. Even after doing this for two months now, I often have to do this process 4 or 5 times before getting the suction started. The first one I had from a different brand had a squeeze bulb but it was a very cheap product and squeezed in on itself and was then rendered useless. I'll be on the lookout for a version that combines the bulb start option with the functionality of this product. But for now, this will do.Summerangel25

Ok. I see alot of reviews stating that "I hate it" and "it sucks", not literally. If u take a large portion of 3 🌟 🌟 🌟 star ratings, they all sound like my church choir! All in unison… People, it's about taking care of our pets and that includes their "living quarters", we all agree. Having that agreed upon, has anyone watched 1 of the 50 YouTube videos, ever, for the siphoning process. I fear we might be so angry that we take it out on the aquarium! Putting it off one day too many and "poof". A little thing known as filter overload. But back to the gravel vac.. Please just remember 2 things, ok? 1: It's OK to start the gravel vac by giving it a couple of pulls on the end it comes out from. Just start it by keeping the tube in the bucket and give it a little suck. Water will immediately start running and you will see this happening as you control it. Bend the hose to pause, keep the vacuum end submerged, make sure the bucket is below the tank. 2: You are in control if this process at all times. Watch video on how to vacuum or start out by removing some gallons of water. All you need is an "aquarium only" bucket. I own both the Small and Small-Tall versions for my 12 gallon quarantine tanks. They both use the same diameter tubing. I have found that the because the suction is pretty poor with such a small diameter hose, that the Small-Tall performs considerably worse than the Small. On the Small Tall, the detritus will start to get sucked up, but will then fall back down because of the length of the tube. Avoid this model even if it's tempting because it may keep your hands dry. It just doesn't work. While the Small will get the debris up, because it hits the hose before it has a chance to fall back down, it literally takes FOREVER to fill up a 5 gallon bucket. If you're just doing a water change, you'd get it done much faster by just scooping the water out. Or upgrade to the smallest 2 inch model instead of these. I would recommend the Small on a 5-10 gallon tank. I used it on a 12 gallon. The Small-Tall is useless.Jesse
I purchased and recently used the small tall to vacuum sand in my 20 gallon aquarium (I know, I originally purchased this for my 60 gallon).. it's very well built. The flow rate is slow, but I think this is so you can vacuum sand, which is why I was drawn to it. I don't know what type of sand I have in my aquarium, but it's fine aragonite, and if I do not pinch the hose after suction, it will suck up all the sand. So there's that.. Overall, I like it a lot, it's meant more for sand cleaning for sure than gravel cleaning!Chris
Great for 75 gallon. Suction is just right, not too fast but powerful enough to get my tank really clean. How I use mine, I attached a plastic garden hose female bib to the end of the siphon hose and attached it to a garden hose. With the other end of the garden hose still attached to the faucet, I open the faucet which starts putting water into the tank. Then without turning off the water, I unscrew the water hose which creates a suction in the siphon. Once completely detached, the water comes siphoning out then clean the gravel as normal. I think the restriction of the long hose keeps the siphon from sucking water out at a high rate which I have read on some of the other reviews. I was pleased with the rate and power. Very clean method and I don't have to carry out buckets of water anymore. That's just the way I clean out the tank. Hope this helps.J.

Ok these things are heaven sent, especially as someone who unwisely chose to put glow in the dark gravel in her bettas fish bowl. I have a 55 gal community tank and this product is excellent for weekly cleanings of waste and detritus of gravel. I used to clean the gravel using a siphon and during water changes but this is 100% better and more convenient. Firstly, the length is perfect for a 55 gal tank so your hand stays out of the water. The suction is excellent. I have medium to small gravel and it only lifts gravel just enough to agitate it and help vacuum sub surface waste. It is rather quiet and it does not bother the fish. Most fish actually follow it around and wait to pick up an morsels stirred up by the cleaning action. You do have to be weary not to accidentally trap any small curious fish while you are cleaning, but the on / off switch is very conveniently located just in case. It takes me less than 15 min to clean the whole tank. Cleaning is a breeze. The unit comes apart very easily and rinses under your faucet. Once you remove the screen section, best to remove both end-caps and then rinse the screen both inside and outside. NOTE:1, Material that is too fine for the screen to filter will be returned into your water so your tank will get a little cloudy for a bit, but depending on your main filter, most of this material will be filtered out or settle down within an hour. Thus, do not clean just before you have company or want to show off your aquarium. NOTE: 2, when lifting cleaner out of your tank, keep it vertical as it retains water due to suction, until the end is out of the water, at which point the water is released. If you are leaning it outward when you remove it, it may splash some water outside the tank (minimal). NOTE:3, When rinsing screen, do not push your fingers on the screen itself as this can detach the screen from its frame. NOTE:4, When removing the clear end suction unit from the motor unit for rinsing, do not twist too hard as the attachment tabs could be broken. Overall this is a great product for me and makes cleaning, fast, quiet and convenient with next to no mess and complete control of the process. The unit appears very robust and is very easy to use. Bought this to replace the self same product which I have been using for about the last ten years. The design is exactly the same as previously and it does an excellent job of cleaning the gravel without removing water at the same time so very useful for routine surface cleaning in between water changes. Well made and fully waterproof, it can be used with the extension on or off. My only comment, which I made ten years ago as well, is that it would be good if both sections of the cleaning tube had the 'toothed' profile. However, this in no way detracts from it functionality and I have no hesitation in recommending it. OK, it's not cheap, but given that I've used the old one for a minimum of once a week for the last ten years, I think it good value for money.shefflich
