Best At Home Highlights For Brown Hair (2024 Update)

I really liked this kit, I've done two so far, my hair is a light brown/very dark blonde to start. I started with the H65 caramel , and the second time did the H85 champagne. Both gave good results. It does take a long time to pull the hair through the cap, especially if you do every hole, and it really helps to have someone to do the back for you. My husband did my whole head and it took us about 2 hours , and he did it pretty quick. I really like that you know you're getting 35v developer, and not just something random. Also like the leave in toner, seemed to really help take out any hint of brass. I know its not as perfect as getting it done at the salon, but I think its as close as can be, for 10 dollars you really can't beat it.Vicki

This highlighting kit is great for "virgin" hair, but if you already have highlights, I would not recommend it. I had significantly grown out roots, and didn't want to pay the price at a salon, so I attempted to do my own using this kit. The highlights ended up brassy and orange towards my roots, and certain parts of my hair turned yellow. The cap didn't allow my hair to be pulled through enough to get close to the root, and it doesn't allow you to put many near the root line, so I ended up with streaky, chunky blocks of hair–not highlights, at all. You will also definitely need someone to help you pull the hair through when you get to the back of your head. It's darn near impossible to see where to pull the hair through on your own, and I even made sharpie marks on the holes, like someone suggested a few comments back. The plastic tool that it comes with bent after maybe 10 holes, so that was a waste. Toner is supposed to help with yellow and orange brassy hair, and the toner did nothing for my hair. It's awful how expensive highlights are in a salon, but do yourself a favor and take the $11 that this costs and save it towards going to a salon. That's where I ended up anyway, so I wish I had this advice before I shelled out more money.kima124

I have used Loreals Frost design highlighting kits for quite a few years now. Its most definitely my go-to at home kit. I will say that when you choose to highlight/bleach your hair at home with a pull through cap, its a long LONG process especially if you have long hair like I do. Depending on how much of your hair you want lightend, and if you want some in the back/bottom you may need help from a friend (or in my case my fiance is actually always eager to help me, he's gotten used to it is really good at it!) Almost every time I use this kit I always end up having to leave the dye in my hair a bit longer than it suggests in the instructions. Normally if it takes too long I will get out the hair dryer blow hot air on my hair to help speed up the process. One thing that took me a long time to figure out was when I washed the dye out of my hair with the cap still on, it would hurt SO bad to take the cap off because bleach damages your hair and its wet knotted up. So, I take the conditioner included in the kit and let it sit on the highlighted hair as directed, wash out the cap glides right off, pain free! I really like that this kit comes with a toner as well in case your hair ends up too brassy/orange. I have never purchased a drugstore highlighting kit before that includes a toner. I always end up with nice cool colored highlights, and people always ask where I had my highlights done I tell them at home!!! Obviously when it comes to highlighting dyeing your own hair at home you risk it turning out a totally different color then what you wanted. I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. I would suggest that anyone with thick hair or very long hair should invest in two packets and not chance a dye disaster!! I have long hair but it is very thin so one packet for me was sufficient. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. I decided to try this product. I have black hair, which I have dyed with black hair dye to cover grays. I knew that this will lighten my hair and pull out the red. Now it's too brassy. What color can I put on this to tone it down? Blue conditioner? I was hoping for a milky brown color as the end result.Selly

I have medium brunette hair and this kit turned my hair orange. It says that people with brunette to black hair can use this product. I have used many highlighting kits by L’Oréal and had wonderful honey blonde highlighting results. I also regularly color my roots with L’Oréal, so I am not new to coloring. Love It. I've now used this 3 times. The first at the tips, the second up on the mids and the third was to add highlights. I used a highlighting cap and use blue conditioner every few weeks. It did not damage my hair in the slightest. I got a lot of compliments. I have natural dark brown hair and it came out an ashy/caramel color and not the slightest bit orange. I do like this product for in between visits to the. Salon or if I wanna add a little more at home. I like that it has a thick formula so it doesn’t get all over the place. I like that it comes with a 30vol developer. I do use it very sparingly on my crown or around my face. I do not keep one certain part so when I feel an area needs a touch up after I get home or before I’m ready to go for a full highlight. It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. I have always been a fan of Revlon and I have always utilized this product consistently for many years. I attempted to use the product today and was extremely disappointed that they changed the "hook" that is included in the box. It is not as referenced in the "included" items as it has been reconfigured to now be added on the end of the "mixer" versus as a separate item and seems to be cheaper plastic. It bent the very first time I tried it and only got more flexible after only 3 hair pulls (I have very short hair) and I realized it was not usable. I even tried to fix the hook and make my own "notch" several times with no success so unless you have your own "hook" this kit is not usable. never ever ever buy this product. I have been highlighting my own hair for 20 years. I have never ever used this brand, but my normal brand was out of stock everywhere. the cap is ridiculous because you can't see any of the holes or circles or anything on it. then once you do find a hole you can't punch through it. I've never really enjoyed coloring my own hair, but I do it out of necessity for saving money. but I've never hated it this much. if you like your sanity do not buy this product. I would give it zero Stars if I could.Taren

I cannot say enough good things about this product. I have been doing my own highlights for years and normally use the one intended for long hair. However, when I need to do touchups, this is my go-to. The color matches the long hair package. I have very dark brown (almost black) hair, and this works great over that. It doesn't fade to orange, or turn into an ugly color. If it does turn brassy over time, a simple purple shampoo can help to balance it out again. I don't use the cap and hook that come in the box. Instead, I use 2 highlighting combs, foils, a highlighting board, and a tinting brush. This method works great for this product, and gives closer to a salon result. I will definitely be using this product in the future.Amy

This was my first attempt at doing my own permanent haircolor. Ambitious, yes, but it went perfectly! Took a couple practice trys getting the hair to come through the cap nicely, and that ended up being the hardest most time consuming part. Having someone to help would've made that a lot easier. I just did crown highlights and it gave nice small strands of color all over. A helper would be a must if you're going to do all over highlights (unless you feel like sitting with a plastic cap on your head for 4 hours). I have light golden brown hair, and in 25 mins it was done. Only drawback is the smell of the leave-in toner which is the last step 😛 So many haircolors (Feria) are nice smelling, why couldn't Loreal do this? Especially on a leave-in product. Oh, and when you mix everything you get this huge tub of haircolor about 1.5×1.5×4 or 5 inches. I barely made a dent in it and I have hair about 2in past my shoulders.. Maybe if you're doing this with your sister or something you could rinse re-use the cap. You'd definantly have enough dye.monica.c

This Clairol bleach lightener powder definitely gets the job done. The lift is great just tend to make the hair a little dried out. I typically like to use this product on bundles or enchanting more so than natural hair for the fact that it leaves my natural hair feeling a bit dry. But it definitely gives great lift so that a plus if you need a budget friendly alternative to do at home.kierra.b

I’ve used this on my roots for ages when I’m coloring my hair. I’ve also used it on friends to do balayage. It’s easy to use and the smell is mild compared to one other bleach I’ve used. I never use more than a 30 volume developer with it but the instructions say you can go higher. I do believe there are other brands that might be better but for the price and the amount you get, I can’t complain. I have very thick and long hair so this container last me for 6 months of managing my roots (I mix 2 bowls each time I need to do my roots). Like a lot of bleaches, this will give you aggressive “hot root” if you try to apply all over and process at the same time. Always do the roots last! Damage is very mild as long as I don’t go over 30 volume developer. It tones very well with any non clairol brand toner as long as it is lifted high enough. *I am not a stylist but have been experimenting with my own hair, and friends/family who trust me and acknowledge my lack of license for 10 years*josee.l

Works well and quickly. There was no damage to my hair. Having experience with this product in the smaller packets, I found it helpful to use as much or as little as I needed without waste. I would caution the inexperienced user — my favorite for bleaching and the best for your scalp. The only problem is some flaky/powdery stuff gets all over you when you are putting it in your hair, make sure you cover your clothing with a sheet or towel or wear clothing that is ok to bleach. I absolutely LOVE THE COLOR!!!!! But it dries out your hair. I use so many products that I thought it would never dry mine out. After two washes I realized I will shampoo the color in, every day, not twice a week. And I will use three minute miracle or 6-13 by Wen directly after. It colors my hair waaaay better than my box color. I only have a few grays with this shampoo verses ALL the gray's with a hair color treatment. So yes, I'm still going to use it!!! I just add oil in my hair every time I wash it. And I have to use this every time I shampoo or it won't work and all the evil gray's come back.Beth

I have used a few products from this line, so I was excited to try a new color in Silvery Diamond. I have heavily lightened hair and maintain this through a salon. Before use, I contacted my hairdresser about using the product. I wanted to make sure she would be able to color correct in case I messed up, or didn't like the color. She agreed that this would be fun and easy to handle after running down a list of ingredients, and directions. I really like this product. It works perfectly on my hair because of how light it is. The silver was pretty but not a good fit for my skin tone which is fair. It washed me out, but that is not the fault of the product. I have used other colors and loved the result. I figured that since I didn't love the color on myself, this would be a great time to see how hard it would be to get out of my hair. I re-washed and used a de-gunking shampoo and conditioner and the color, although still visible was lightened and had a really pretty sparkle that played up the tones of my blonde. I really liked it. These are high-quality products, and leave your hair feeling soft and silky after use. I definitely recommend this to anyone with lightened hair. My stylist talked me into "highlights" around the face and I have some old yellowing highlights in the back I was trying to grow out. I started out with platinum blonde hair and my roots were growing in silver and dark grey. IGK had it's work cut out for it. The box color was Olsen's (I'm guessing to replicate MK A Olsen), and my hair looks almost too natural blonde!* I can't decide if it lays a color on, or bleaches your hair. Either way, it's a great color to be'naturally blonde' if that's what you're going for. Why the 4 stars instead of 5? Because I had to scramble to find an extra hair coloring kit (to steal the shampoo/conditioner packets) in order to get it washed/conditioned properly… because we all know, a standard conditioner doesn't cut it when you're stressing out your tresses with harsh chemicals no matter how nice it smells. In summation, it's a great color, smells a little odd (like a cooked green vegetable) but not bad, made my skin tingle/sting a bit, and the kit wasn't complete. *pictures show the color changed the platinum to a more medium natural blonde, and lightened the roots – which are normally pretty dark greyjennifer.l

This was my first time trying an IGK hair color product. I found it quite easy to do. The packaging it comes in opens up into a tray that shows you step by step how to instructions. The only thing it didn’t tell was whether your hair should be washed that day or not and I was able to find that info on their site. This product has several steps some of which I was not used to from other brands. It included a barrier gel to put on your forehead and ears to keep from getting dye on your skin. I’ve never seen that before with other brands but it really was a big help. The dye itself was easy to mix and it didn’t have any terrible ammonia smell or anything. It’s thick in consistency so you don’t have to worry about it running much either. After washing out and treating with the conditioning step there is an eraser step which helps with cleanup. That was very nice to have. It easily removed all dye that managed to get on my arms and sink. I will say the shade that was chosen doesn’t really feel like it’s very different that my starting shade. It did however give my hair added depth and tone. I see different highlights and lowlights and my hair is definitely much shinier. My hair even feels softer.This hair color is cruelty free as well as vegan. I was so excited to try IGK’s Permanent Color Kit because they are a cruelty free brand and the product is clean and vegan. My normal hair color is dark brown and I tried the color Back to Brown (5N). To be honest, I had gotten kind of lazy with covering my grays (which somehow seemed to multiply rapidly during the pandemic), so I was in dire need of coloring my hair. The first thing I noticed was that my kit didn’t include gloves, which must’ve been a mistake since the instructions specifically say to put on gloves before applying the color. Since I didn’t want to have my hands stained dark brown, I ended up having to ruin a pair of rubber kitchen gloves, which ended up being pretty bulky and cumbersome during the process. The kit also didn’t include an applicator brush of any kind, but thankfully I happened to have a spare applicator brush from an old dpHUE hair color kit because there’s no way I could work the color through my hair with just the bulky rubber kitchen gloves. My grays are pretty stubborn so I left the color on for over an hour (the instructions say 35 mins but 45 mins for stubborn grays). Aside from the color, the kit included packets of Protect Color Block Barrier Gel, Erase Stain Removing Cleanser, and Post-Color Treatment Mask, which were nice touches. However, the instructions say to cleanse with your favorite IGK shampoo before applying the Treatment Mask, so I was confused why they didn’t include a sample packet of shampoo as well. I didn’t have IGK shampoo on hand at home so I used a different brand of shampoo for color-treated hair instead. Unfortunately, the end result was pretty disappointing. Despite letting the color process for over an hour, the grey coverage was awful. I don’t know if having to use bulky rubber kitchen gloves was to blame, but I could still see plenty of grays peeking through immediately after I completed the process, which you can see in the before and after pics. The missing gloves, lack of applicator brush and shampoo packet are inconvenient but nothing I can’t work through. However, when I don’t even have complete grey coverage afterwards, there’s no point even using this product. There are other cruelty-free brands out there with better results so I wouldn’t recommend this product.kirsten.c

Was not worth the money. Absolutely not enough product for one head of hair unless it’s super short. Did not get any results at all . The absolute worst hair lightener I’ve ever used . I used to use this in the darker shade years ago before it stopped being available in the UK so I was excited about trying it again for my lockdown root issues. It was a bit daunting how dark the all-over colour made my hair, covering up my roots and previous highlights. But it was actually very close to my natural, dark ash blond hair colour. I followed the instructions and let that dry fully before patiently taking small sections of my hair from each side and rubbing the blue, highlighting paste in well. I am delighted with the results, although I have had to use a violet hair treatment to stop brassiness. I have included some photos. I took AGES, mixing the paste really well and taking thinner and thicker sections in the areas the instructions suggested for framing my face and I reckon that patience paid off. I followed the instructions exactly as written and I even put the anti brass conditioner for 7 mins instead of 5. But my highlights all came out orangey instead of blonde. The base color was so strong that it hurt my scalp even after 2 days! Terrible mistake of trying this highlight and color product and I have to suffer with this terrible brassy orangey color for another week before I go to the salon as my scalp is still hurting from the base color ( my highlights was 1/4 inch away from roots so I am sure it was the base color that was too strong ) worst part is that my gray is still visible ! Though I normally use John Frieda Foam haircolor to due my hair, I like to have some highlights in Summer. I used to lay $06 the salon to get Caramel highlights out into my Auburn red hair and the result was gorgeous. Paying salon prices was my last resort after trying a few at home highlighting kits which were all disastrous. This is the first one to come out that gives me the same quality results as paying outrageous salon prices. And I actually love the base color of the permanent hair due more than the cold I get from John Frieda. Anyway once I dye my whole head with the base color. I wait until the following day or 2 to do the highlights. This kit comes with Praline highlights which looks almost exactly like the Caramel ones I loved so much against the red. This kit is the first one to make applying the highlights very simple and still ends up with amazing results. You can make your highlights however you prefer… Whether you like chunky highlights, or just face framing ones, or highlights throughout all your hair in thin strips. You can brush them on easily with the brush that is petite enough to give you great control or the finger brush which I prefer. You are able to easily see where you have already applied Highlights and then it's just a matter of time and rinse. This kit makes it so easy, I think even a beginner could master this and again, the results are salon worthymalinda.s

To keep it a buck, I did not want the color that Magenta and Red mixed together created. I wanted more of a burgundy color and what I got was something that looks like…sangria. I asked a professional if I were to do the color from a box, if it would create the color I wanted even though I had naturally dark brown, resembling black hair. She said, “YES! Trust me!” And so, I decided to and ended up not getting the color I wanted, 😅. However, there are some pros! -The color is super vibrant. -My hair is not as dry as I thought it’d be. It’s my first time coloring my hair and I thought my hair would be brittle, but it actually felt moisturized after the completion of dying my hair. -I didn’t use bleach and the color still came out very pigmented. You don’t always need bleach, y’all. -My curl pattern hasn’t changed at all and you could see the definition far more now that my hair is red! Overall, this hair dye was pretty good. I wanted to try the Creme of Nature or even Dark and Lovely hair brands due to less harmful chemicals, but my curls still look very healthy and shiny. I’ve currently had the hair dye for a week and the color hasn’t faded at all when I’ve washed my hair at least 3 times. Although this wasn’t the color I wanted, I am warming up to it as it does compliment my skin tone AND I have had strangers stop me and compliment how much they love the color. I never used this product before and I’m so impressed with the result. The color is so bright and perfect I’m in love of the color. I use two tubes to color my hair because I have a lot of hair and is kind of long, and yes guys I cut off my hair too is not that long as it was but is not too short too. But this color is dye is totally recommend it I use one number 5H on my mom’s hair and the color is so bright and beautiful as well. We love it.cristina.l

[brand:loreal-excellence-hair-color] is a tool in my hairdressing toolbox! This is the first color that I have used that will lift dark hair color more than a couple shades. Their entire line is meant for this purpose and this purpose only. You do use 40 volume which leaves the hair in a not so healthy condition. But luckily with the help of [brand:olaplex]  This is a thing of the past. They don’t have a huge Selection to choose from but what they do have rocks. I have used the magenta and red hot Together for an amazing combination.amanda.c

I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. (Because my hair turned out so well, he now thinks he is a master colorist 🙄) My hair is VERY thick. I’m incredibly pleased with the results overall. My hair has absolutely zero orange tones to it at all. There are so many baby highlights that my hair doesn’t look streaky, chunky or strange. The strands blend in so well giving my hair an overall natural look. My hair feels super soft and healthy too! I was worried it would get brittle because I left the dye on right up until the max time, but I haven’t had a single issue with my hair falling out, breaking or feeling fried. This kit changed my perception of box dye forever! It was so easy to use (you literally can’t mess this up!), made my hair look great and saved me a ton of money! I attempted to use the product today and was extremely disappointed that they changed the "hook" that is included in the box. It is not as referenced in the "included" items as it has been reconfigured to now be added on the end of the "mixer" versus as a separate item and seems to be cheaper plastic. It bent the very first time I tried it and only got more flexible after only 3 hair pulls (I have very short hair) and I realized it was not usable. I even tried to fix the hook and make my own "notch" several times with no success so unless you have your own "hook" this kit is not usable. It is extremely frustrating to plan to highlight my hair, get everything set up and then realize I can't use the kit due to changes in quality.Disappointed

I use to use this back when I was younger it really did a good job at highlighting my hair especially during the summer time. I use to spray this all in my hair and go outside and sit directly in the sun during the heat of the day and by the time I came back into the house the parts I sprayed was completely bleach blonde. It never had a harsh smell it always smelled like fresh lemon juice. You know if you wanna try this but don’t have the money to buy it. You can put hydrogen peroxide and pure lemon juice into a spray bottle and spray it in you’re hair and go sit in the sun ☀️ and it will do the same. jesse.g

I've been using this since the 90s and it has always done what it is supposed to do. It does lighten my black hair but turns it a bit brassy and it's slow acting. Gotta add blue shampoo with it if you don't like the brassy/orange color. I usually use one full bottle on my hair for them summer days. My hair texture does not change or gets worse. But then again, I've always used it on virgin hair and not on treated or dyed hair.Mkone

I would say that is product, , works pretty nicely if you use it multiple times. I have dark brown hair almost black and I have used the whole bottle (4 uses) and it's made my hair a light brown. My hair length is medium so I got 4 uses out of the bottle. I am happy with the results but I think I want to go lighter and get a second bottle. I would think it works better on people with blonde/light colored hair. It didn't dry out my hair as my hair still feels soft and voluminous. I guess everyone's hair is different. I also recommend you wash your hair after using this product and use a hair mask in the shower. I guess that's why my hair didnt dry out. I don't know why I never learn from my past mistakes but this is the third time I've used this bleach and it will definitely be the last time. I spent about two years leaving my hair alone to grow our naturally and didn't bother to color it. This bleach was the only one I could find in the store at the time and this just didn't do anything for me. It smells awful, there isn't enough for a full head, and the anti brass purple conditioner is a genuine joke. I'm going to try something else to bleach my hair this week but I'm hoping this review will save people from making the same mistake I did. Just don't do it. Find something else. The instructions are clear and I am very appreciative on being able to have everything needed for the incredible price. This kit is dummy-proof. I had no experience in dying my hair prior to using this kit and I achieved the look I was going for. My hair is dark brown and there was no previous bleach or dye in it. I used the sectioned ponytail method and I did not tease the hair. I wrapped each ponytail in foil after fully saturating each one. I left the product on for the full 45 minutes and did check for color lift/change at 30 minutes. I used the included comb to apply the product as well as the conditioner. I have medium short hair, but I have an undercut so one bottle was enough for me. If I had a full head of hair and longer, I would probably have needed another bottle.DIYmumprof

What a mess. The black ink smears all over the bottle when you are mixing/processing/applying to you hair. Gloves are a must! It dried out my hair so I’m pretty sad. I had been using another product prior to color my hair but I wanted to try a new one and it dried out my hair & some hair was/is light orange and the rest white blonde. So terrible! I’ve been doing my own hair for 15 yrs so I know what I’m doing. When you shake the product and remove the lid it explodes all over. Went all over my bathroom wall & porcelain sink. Thin product. I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. This kit is basically fool proof. I pulled my hair through every single hole of the cap. My husband helped me with the very back, as I didn’t want to miss any hair underneath because I wear my hair up often. He had no problems with the hook either. (Because my hair turned out so well, he now thinks he is a master colorist 🙄) My hair is VERY thick. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough dye with just 1 box, but to my surprise I had just enough to coat every single strand. The color is very easy to mix. Just empty the contents of a powder packet into a bottle containing liquid and shake vigorously. I really appreciate that I didn’t have to worry about having color on too long in one spot and not long enough in others because it looks goes on at the same time, another reason why the cap is so great. I like the smell of hair bleach and always have. This has that smell, but it is very light and not overpowering. My roots were quite dark, so I left this on for 50 minutes checking every 5. I absolutely did NOT want my hair looking orange (hello flashbacks from teenage years!) I was a bit scared to remove the cap because I felt like it was going to pull my hair out at the roots, but it came off with no issues or hair loss. I really love the purple shampoo and conditioner that was provided in the box. It smelled wonderful and made it very easy to get all the product out. I do comb my conditioner through my hair and I did that with this. My hair didn’t feel dry, crisp or brittle at all. The conditioner had a very nice slip and hydrated very well. I’m incredibly pleased with the results overall. My hair has absolutely zero orange tones to it at all. There are so many baby highlights that my hair doesn’t look streaky, chunky or strange. The strands blend in so well giving my hair an overall natural look. My hair feels super soft and healthy too! I was worried it would get brittle because I left the dye on right up until the max time, but I haven’t had a single issue with my hair falling out, breaking or feeling fried. This kit changed my perception of box dye forever! It was so easy to use (you literally can’t mess this up!), made my hair look great and saved me a ton of money! This truly gives you salon quality results at home! 10/10 would recommend, even if your at home hair skills are lacking, you can do this!gina.r

I have always been a fan of Revlon and I have always utilized this product consistently for many years. I attempted to use the product today and was extremely disappointed that they changed the "hook" that is included in the box. It is not as referenced in the "included" items as it has been reconfigured to now be added on the end of the "mixer" versus as a separate item and seems to be cheaper plastic. It bent the very first time I tried it and only got more flexible after only 3 hair pulls (I have very short hair) and I realized it was not usable. I even tried to fix the hook and make my own "notch" several times with no success so unless you have your own "hook" this kit is not usable. It is extremely frustrating to plan to highlight my hair, get everything set up and then realize I can't use the kit due to changes in quality.Disappointed

It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. If you’re looking to save yourself a hundred (or more) dollars and you have the time and patience, I would definitely recommend this Revlon Color Effects kit!devon.g

This is by far the best Bleaching kit that I have found. It dramatically lightened my dark blonde tresses to a Bombshell Platinum shade. Very easy to use and it came with complete instructions on step by step easy to read and understand instructions. It lifted my shade atleast 6 shades. I am a huge fan of Jerome Russell products and I will definitely be purchasing this product again. I highly recommend that if you want to achieve a high lift of blonde, then this is the product that you want.becky.h

Came with 40 Developer and two bags of bleach and a brush. was disappointed there was no mixing dish or conditioner . However there was a cap and gloves and hair cap. Worked better than most I've tried. as it left my hair very soft and not dry damaged . I use a little and touch up later. making this box last awhile.christy

I was hesitant about using this and absolutely shouldn’t have been. The lightener I was using before never lifted my hair how I wanted it to, but after using this I got the lift I wanted and it couldn’t have been easier!kirsten.s
