Best Carpet Cleaner For Shag Carpet (2023 Update)

We frequently have six grand children running around are house. They mainly stay in the living room where Nana let's them eat snacks! The carpet had noticably dingy traffic areas, spills, and various snack crumbs smashed into the carpet around the coffee table area. As a former professional carpet cleaner of five + years, I am amazed at how well this smart wash carpet cleaner cleaned our carpet! The living room is approximately 13' x 20' and used 2 gallons of hot water with mixed detergent to clean. The traffic areas and spills took multiple passes as expected. 1 gallon of water without detergent was used to rinse the carpet and extract any remaining detergent from the carpet. Rinsing is an important step because detergent is designed to attract dirt and if not rinsed properly, will attract more dirt to the carpet. I was sceptical at first and thought at best the carpet would look "better". However, the hoover smart wash outperformed my expectations and the carpet actually looks clean! I highly recommend the smart wash carpet cleaner.Feathered Edge

I've owned this machine for little over two years now and overall it's been great but there was one issue I had about six months into owning it with the dry only button and I was frustrated but Hoover was awesome about it and sent me a box and return label so they could see the problem and fix it. Not only did they send me a brand new machine, they also sent me my old one fixed and restored! This machine does an amazing job and it's much lighter to push than the older previous models. It takes a little bit getting used to it at first since it operates differently than older models. Once you get used to it, it's easy. One complaint I have is it's a pain having to remove the small cleaning solution container and setting it aside for rinsing with water only. (Note: be sure to place it upside down or it will leak cleaning solution all over the floor) Not a deal breaker but I hope with future models there can be a switch to use clean water only for rinsing. One thing I will stress that helps is to clean out the machine good after every cleaning! With this model it is easy to remove the brushes and the plastic covering them. This particular model has a "dry only" function which did not work on the first unit ordered. It has a circuit board which is either susceptible to damage or manufacturer defect. After going through the gamut of trial and error with customer service, they sent a replacement free of charge.

Here are a few things I've found over the past year of using the unit maybe 10 or 12 times.

The good first.

I like the dry only feature so that way one can use it as a dry vacuum or go over the freshly cleaned carpet to one's heart's content.

It seems pretty light and maneuverable to me and the three agitator brushes do a pretty good job agitating the carpet pile.

Yep, that's about it.

The not so good.

First and foremost there is no way to rinse the cleaning solution mixture from the carpet leaving it behind to dry and attract and hold on to dirt and grime. I used it on a white shag and the tips of the pile turned brown as it dried so I went through the whole process again only this time adding a clean water rinsing step and used my shop vac to remove the rinse water.

Why would I use the Shop-Vac to remove the water you might ask? Because these units do not have enough suction to do the job.

The cleaning solution container does not seal well when removing it from the unit so it tends to get messy and somewhere along the pathway in the unit seems to leak eventually.

The dry only function seems to be malfunctioning or it could be the leaky cleaning solution.

There are a lot of little nooks and crannies to clean after every use if you want to keep it operating as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Ultimately, in my humble opinion, they need to scrap this design and go back to the drawing board. If you remove the cleaning solution container it will make a decent but very expensive vacuum.Andrew

Ok, so I see the reviews and I can say I personally have owned 1 of the Bissell Revolutions 2x whatever cleaning power and I was satisfied (extremely satisfied as it still runs). I have a black lab and a long haired cat and I live in the country. We have absolutely no concrete or asphalt surrounding our house, and live by the coast so our dirt is probably about 30-40% sand, so tracking mud and sand is frequent in our home. I still have the Bissell (no complaints there), however I clean mine everytime after I use it and vacuume very very thoroughly before I shampoo with my shark navigator (that I am also very very happy with). The thing with all carpet cleaners is the way you treat them. You can't just vacuume once briefly then expect the shampooer to not pick up hair clumps. Do this: vacuume the area until you think u did good, then empty the vacuume and do it again. If you pick up no hair, use the shampooer. If you keep vacuuming up hair, then keep vacuuming until you basically aren't picking up hair, then you will not have issues with your shampooer. I just got the Hoover Powerdash (I got a super good deal for $20 from a garage sale brand new in box never used so I figured why not, my Bissell isn't a pet model so this will be good to try) and am writng this review in response to all the negative recent reviewers I see just because they are having so many of the same issues with clumped hair and leaks.. First off, don't leave your shampooer with dirty water, and it won't leak. Also, don't leave solution in it or simply store the resiviour separately so you won't have leaks either. These machines mainly use gravity to apply solution, possibly with the assist of a small pump like device that might be powered by the belt rotation to feed water (which is great, never have to replace an actual pump) so if you leave solution or dirty water stored in the resiviors, your bound for issues. It's all common sense, if you expect to just leisurely vacuume and have your shampooer do all the rest, then hire a pro. If your willing to take the correct steps in maintaining and shampooing your carpets to remove grime, these are for you.
One lady stated she's owned 12 of the exact 1 that I own (which is I'm assuming for a business or a friggin mansion) so not sure what she's doing wrong but I guarantee the problem is operator error. Especially if she's having the same issues with the same shampooer that I have never seen, unless of course she's overusing them when she shoulda got a commercial cleaner for whatever she needs 12 of these things. I use mine about 15-20 times per year for the past 2 or 3 years and don't have issues. This is for residential use, if taken care of they will last. One last thing, clean your shampooer directly after use, I take mine out front and rinse it on our gravel driveway, being careful to only lightly spray the nozzle and brush assembly, keeping water away from the motor. This will ensure a clean start next session, and is a hell of a lot easier than cleaning clumped up dirt and hair that's caked up and dried solid before u even get to shampooing and even better for the machine instead of just flat out not cleaning at all and burning out the motor due to naglagence and poor maintenance. Use your head people, these are designed to clean what dry vacumes can't, not vacume up hair and remove grime at once. You need to remove a majority of the hair and then these come in and remove everything else just fine. Plain and simple.
Tip: make your own solution using a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, laundry detergent or dish soap and whatever essential oil fragrance you like (orange or grapefruit recommended). Search online for the correct amounts of ingredients for your needsTyler D

this cleans pretty well. Much better than my big Spin Scrub Hoover. This tiny little thing has the right kind of brushroll to pick up the carpet fibers and sweep off the dirt. It has good suction. Traffic areas get matted or compressed so they need the brushroll. What makes it a problem, is that the dirty water reservoir has very limited capacity so it only cleans about a 3×3 foot area before it is too full. That is, in a high traffic area. It might clean a slightly larger area if you are only lightly cleaning invisible dirt. I think the mechanism senses SUDS and freaks out and quits suctioning, and it also let a large amount of sudsy water leak out on my hardwood floor next to my carpet, without warning. If it's not very sudsy, it won't leak so bad, just a little, when full. so i had to empty this dirty water tank 3x on a 2.5x 8 foot hall carpet with low pile. . Not cool. Definitely ONLY for small areas as i said above. I was attracted to the bigger more expensive ones of this style that have 2 brush rolls and much larger capacity, and wider cleaning path. I will probably have to get one of those, as this one won't work well for a regular sized room, even just the traffic areas.lexy

Initially bought to clean carpet from when my pup was sick and tried to hide downstairs in the only part with carpet when she wasn’t feeling well. Unfortunately, that liquid sat into the carpet without knowing for a while. This carpet cleaner took care of that and then some ! I LOVE the feature that it has heat to help dry the carpet so you can basically walk onto it right after. I’ve had my basement get water in it after a storm and I was able to also use this to suck up all the water out of the carpet. It saved us from having to replace the baseboards/carpet. I understand it is compact so it’s not really meant to clean your entire house of carpet. The bin gets full quickly with the dirty fluids. The unit isn’t heavy like a commercial use which could be an issue if you have thick/deep carpet. It’s easily disassembled for cleaning of hair in the brush. I did notice when sucking up water from the thick carpets constantly to save us from flooding it was almost as if I could start to smell the belt running hot. In that case I tried my best to wait longer between vacuuming. I’d recommend this to anyone. 4.5 stars only for unit capacity is slightly not enough for my liking.kelsey.k

Never have issues with Cleaning Product adding Pic just so you have documentation on how disgusting this machine was and had to be cleaned before I could use it. So Disgusting would even spray solution because it was clogged. Had to blow it out with an air compressor to get it to function.gale r.

I'm in love❤ with this carpet cleaner. No wrestling with a heavy bulky rental cleaner. Easy to fill and dump dirty water, it disperses the cleaner automatically to perfection. It cleaned better than store rental. Extremely easy to use and the brushes on bottom help clean rugs or carpet. I had some very tough stains and it did superb..just a little pretreat. I never thought it would perform ad great as it did. Seen some bad reviews and wondered if they correctly used it? Can't imagine it doing a bad job. Just remember to vacumn prior to using the carpet cleaner as it says. Thank Hoover for saving the back if a sixty year old with this easy to use and to put together carpet cleaner. I clean houses for a living. Residential, rentals, Airbnb's move-outs/move-ins, I've had this carpet shampooer for maybe a year and a half, used it a handful of times not as much as I would have liked to or needed to. I ended up getting a little hand held spot cleaner that I use but it doesn't even cover the ground I needed the normal size shampooer for. In the despencer where you are supposed to put the cleaner in, it has gotten clogged and no cleaner will come out of it at all anymore and when I do use it just water comes out? But it smells so much like mold and mildew, I don't understand why it would smell so bad especially when I clean it thouroughly after every use. On top of that when I bought it brand new in the box that had never been opened, I didn't get all the attachment pieces or the filters or a lot of the parts that are supposed to come wirh it, it was just the hose one basic attachment piece for that hose and a couple other parts but it was missing most the accessories it was supposed to come with. It worked good the first two times I used it maybe but after that it was garbage. I'm very disappointed with this product, it was a waste of money 100%.Jill

I had to send it in for repair after having it for 14 months because it stopped suctioning. Assurion sent me a gift card via mail. It's been well over 7-10 business days, so I made contact again. They're resending me a gift card, and I should receive it in 1-2 business days. Hopefully, I get that card soon because I need to clean my carpets, I run a dog rescue and get a lot of accidents. Now I have to research for another one. I could rebuy this one, but honestly, after using it for a few months, it really didn't clean well. It reminded me of a cheaper carpet cleaner, and I was not satisfied with the results. Also, keep your box if you get a warranty with your carpet cleaner. In order to use my warrant, I had to send in my carpet cleaner to "get fixed". I was fortunate enough to have found my box buried deep in a closet! Otherwise, it can be difficult to find a box big enough to send the product in. According to All-State/Asurion, my carpet cleaner was "not able to be repaired" so they sent a gift card that doesn't even have a sufficient amount of funds to repurchase a new one. Warranties are great at times, but can really be a hindrance when trying to settle your clam(s).Shanell

I will start off by saying that I had problems with my order but Bissell Customer Service was very good. I would like to thank customer support agent Nilka for their help in resolving the matter. When I finally received my carpet cleaner it was easy to assemble. The instruction manual is well written and easy to follow with diagrams explaining everything in detail. Included in the box is a sample of cleaning solution which was good for just over 3 full tanks of clean water. In use the machine is light weight and easily maneuverable. There is a noticeable change in motor sound when the dirty water tank reaches the full line which is very helpful. I was surprised at how much water was extracted from the carpets. The carpets were just damp after cleaning and dried in about 5-6 hours. Just be sure to go slow during the extraction passes and allow the carpet cleaner to do it's work. The 2 tanks are small but they are easy to remove, drain, refill and replace. I went through approximately 12-14 full tanks to thoroughly clean a large 1 br apartment with wall to wall carpet. (Living room, dining room, bedroom and hallway). The carpet cleaner does an excellent job of cleaning the carpets. Afterwards the carpets are clean, fresh and look revitalized. After use the PowerClean TurboBrush pet advanced carpet cleaner is really easy to thoroughly clean before storing it away. I highly recommend Bissell for both their customer service and superior product.GeoM

As a professional carpet cleaner with over 15 years experience, I am always investigating new products and since our Canadian dollar has dived so deep, it is no longer practical to order more expensive professional products from across the border. So I tried the Zep with our $30,000 machine and find it to be a decent cleaner, but not the best I've tried. It is low foaming, not fumy and safe to use according to the MSDS I've studied, but Zep makes another product that performs better (greenlink) which I prefer, but cannot find any additional info on it so it may be discontinued. For the average consumer using a store rental I would say this product is acceptable for use.Richardus

Having had several litters of kittens in my apartment, the rugs would get stained. Bought this to help clean and then they replaced my rugs. Never got to use it but gave some to a friend of mine who's puppy had little accidents. She raved about it to me as it cleaned it right up. I had no idea this product even existed! I am SO glad that this product is out there because myself and my family all have sensitive skin. Having a carpet cleaning formula that is free from dyes and fragrances has been amazing! I don't have to worry about us walking on the carpet and breaking out from it. This formula may not have all the dyes and fragrances, but it still removes dirt very well! Another thing about this formula that I really like is that it doesn't require a ton of it each time you use your carpet cleaner. The cleaning formula did a really good job cleaning my carpet. It did a nice job on high traffic areas. I usually clean my carpets about once a month because of grandchildren spilling things and 2 cats in my household. I waited a little longer to clean them this time because I knew I would be receiving the formula shortly and wanted to give it a try on carpet that was a little more dirty than normal. The formula did a great job at cleaning my carpet. When done it looked and smelled clean and refreshed. I would recommend this formula for cleaning all types of carpets whether you have pets or messy grandchildren. I would definitely purchase this formula in the future.Pegasus59

One of the better carpet cleaners I've used. For high traffic areas, I've sprayed this directly on my carpet in full strength and let it sit for a bit. Then, I wet vacuumed and the carpet looked a lot brighter.erlene.a

Hasn’t caused any type of reaction from my pets. Used in a larger machine to clean large areas of carpet in my house. Smells good and got all the stains out. I also used this to clean the carpets in my car when someone cut me off and caused eggs I had bough to break on my carpet. Lastly, I used this in a spray bottle to clean some of my old shoes with a small brush to agitate and they came out looking really good. I just bought myself a Hoover carpet cleaner just because I really don’t trust carpet cleaning companies claiming to use non-toxic solutions and also bringing someone’s else’s mess into my house. Anyways I did a lot of reading on different natural non toxic solutions and this one seemed to be the best and now after using it, I can certainly say that! Washed my whole upstairs and my carpet feels so soft and clean! And no scent at all which is a plus for me. I have little kids and using a natural non toxic solution is very important! I am amazed at how effective this machine is at cleaning up even very old pet stains from carpet and mattress topper. I have two chihuahuas that occasionally barf on the bed or my carpeted bedroom floor, and sometimes they will pee too on the carpeting. I of course blot up as much as possible when this occurs but it was still gross. Not bad enough that it stank to high heaven or anything but the beige carpet looked gross with lots of little spots and definitely needed a freshening. I couldn't believe how immediately this machine removes the pee and barf stains!! Even ones that were really old, even got old bile stains out of a white mattress topper-quickly and easily. Everything looks and smells great now. I really can barely believe it! I happened to get this machine second hand/used from someone's tag sale but I would pay the full price. When I first got the Little Green I used it primarily for cleaning spots on area rugs. It worked well, but always leaked every single time I used it. The suction is pretty weak for a carpet cleaner…I have even done a thorough clean of all the tubes and nozzle to make sure it was 100% clean without any blockage. After not using it for 6 months (and misplacing the water nozzle and suction brush during a move) I replaced both items through the Bissell site. I once again made sure all compartments were clean in the machine before use. Now when I use the machine the dirty water excessively leaks from the bottom (or some area at the bottom of the machine) and the leakage has gotten EXTREMELY worse. I ended up having to place the machine on a heavy duty trash bag on top of a high absorbent mat. When I use the suction, there are LITERAL BUBBLES coming from the bottom of the machine. NOTHING is going into the dirty water tank. Before anyone asks, yes the suction top on the dirty water container is closed and all items are in the proper place. So moral of the story is that instead of having dirty water in the designated tank, it is now pooling in the trash bag. After tonight I will NOT be using this product ever again. I pour a bit of this in my big green carpet cleaning machine after adding the hot water, and it does an AMAZING job!! I used it for the first time (having used various other cleaners for years past) and it was pulling up dirt that was trapped from SOOO long ago! Its like when you buy a GREAT vacuum cleaner, and SO much more comes up.. well this is exactly what a 1/4-1/3cup pour of this stuff into my hot water did. I ended up having so much fun pulling up more and more that I did the job four times and pulled up more and more. My carpet looks better than it ever has!! Haven't tried spot cleaning with it, but I will definitely be keeping this in stock for my carpet cleaning on a large scale.Melanie

I ordered this product. I was sent the wrong 1. The company sent me the 1 in the yellow gallon jug which is just a spot and stain remover. I am very disappointed. No one has responded to my email. I had to deal with days-old, very dark brown liquidy cat vomit on my non-shag carpet. This product did a very good job lifting the colour and odour out with some elbow grease as well. First I scraped up the dry solids, then I applied cleaner diluted with hot water from a squeeze bottle to the spots, scrubbed with a small brush and then vacuumed the liquid up with my carpet cleaner. I repeated the process a couple of times to get it all, but it's gone now.ASPA

I've had a carpet cleaner for 18 years and it has gotten so heavy now because I broke my neck and I can't push and pull like I use to so I thought I would purchase a new one that was lightweight and easier to use. This is is easier to push and pull but it's not as lightweight as I thought it would be. It works good, picks up well. But I don't like not having a separate tank for the cleaning solution. If you're like me and can't always afford high dollar cleaning solutions and use Pinesol or Lysol to clean your carpet it foams up. You can still do it you just need to be careful how much you use at a time. The tanks are smaller and you have to empty them more often but I knew that when I bought it. I REALLY like where you attach the hose for cleaning your couch. If you don't need it you can keep it put up out of your way. I hated my last one because the hose would always fall off and you would have to stop and wind it back up onto the handle of the cleaner. If you live in a large house this is definitely not for you but it you live in a apartment or mobile home I recommend it highly.Happygirl03

DO NOT BUY…. Horrible design first off making the return tank a nightmare. Second, suctions leaves a lot to be desired…. Third, so loud may drown out a concert…… Here is the reason why I am posting this: 4 months in possession, 3 uses only to have a major part break due to cheap plastic and a roller completely seized. Anything outside the motor such as any moving part has only a 30 day warranty. The warranty is so limited you might as well not even buy it given poor poor quality of products these days. Eventually I fought hard enough to get a replacement, but trust me you do not want the hassles. Stay away unless you absolutely will be buying an extra warranty. That is what companies do anymore, pass the warranty on crap products to insurance… The American Way, no liability and yet make that profit. Serious junk and rollers alone are $82 which is a joke….Brittany

Bought this at the end of February of 2022(this year) after having a Hoover basic carpet shampooer for 10 years(seal started going bad around year 9 and at year 10 it just stopped doing a good job cleaning so I needed an upgrade.) Bought this because it had the hose capability if I needed it. First week of using the deep and express carpet features on the carpet were amazing. Then around week 3 I noticed a little water would pile up if left on the floor after a cycle of cleaning. Assumed it was the bristles that were still wet so after a cleaning cycle I would let it run a little longer hoping to pick up excess water. It helped a bit. Fast forward to July of 2022 I finally needed to use the hose on a couch cushion. I used the hose and noticed some leaking happening on the floor. Assumed I didn’t tighten the cap all the way, I didn’t think much of it. Fast forward to august of 2022, I needed to use it again on the couch cushion but decided I was gonna do the entire couch. I was shampooing and didn’t see that were was a pile and I mean pile leaking that got under the entire couch and then just around on the floor in the opposite direction. Did not notice till I went to walk to get to another couch cushion to wash and I slipped and fell. Thought maybe there was a block in the system-I have 3 dogs but I always vacuum before using the system. Checked it out and no blockage. Husband checked it out and it leaked for him. So he popped the top off where the hose connects and noticed both seals were bad. One was ripped and one just didn’t stop water from leaking out. So immediately upon it coming out of the factory it was bad. I had a warranty that I bought. Not exactly thrilled when I went to exchange it, I was given a gift card for the amount and I can purchase any item and have to repurchase a warranty when the item was defective straight out of the factory. I am having a really hard time wanting to give Bissell a second chance. Because I do not want to buy another bissell machine and warranty to have a defective product. Attached are photos of some of the smaller leaks that occurred. The larger one where I fell, I didn’t think to take a photo of it. It was just too large and needed to be cleaned up immediately! Also attached is a photo of a close up of the hose attached. It’s harder to see(better in a video) where it shows the water pulling upward and goes out of the seal and leaking downward. But you can faintly see the bubbling of water and the water building up on the plastic front cover.Anne

Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away Upright Vacuum This is a really nice general purpose vacuum. It is relatively quiet, has good suction and is versatile in terms of configurations for various uses. Assembly was pretty simple. There are just a few parts and they snap together easily without any tools. In the “normal” upright configuration, the vacuum is easy to navigate on wood/tile floors or carpet. The rotator brush and suction seem to do well. We picked up quite of bit of dirt and lint in the dirt bin during our test even though it had not been that long since we last vacuumed. The brush head pivots when you rotate your wrist from side to side which makes maneuvering around objects a breeze. The power unit can quickly be lifted off so the wand and brush head can easily slide under beds. You can then also pop off he rotator brush head and attach the crevice tool or small brush to reach high on a wall or in a hard to reach spot behind a piece of furniture or appliance. The cord is of ample length to cover an average size room without constantly moving to a different outlet. The dust bin is very easy to empty. Just be sure not to push the button to open the bin until you have it over a trash can. I made that mistake and had the opportunity to test the vacuum again!AncientGeek

I should state upfront that I received the Shark – Rotator Powered Lift-Away Deluxe Bagless 3-in-1 Upright Vacuum model NV751 for purposes of providing an honest and unbiased review. In many ways, the NV751 is a good vacuum. I think Shark is a good, reliable brand. Perhaps my own critiques of the vacuum are more nitpicks, but I expected a bit more from the vacuum in terms of features and accessories. It's a good vacuum, and I recommend it. But, some of the design decisions seem a bit questionable and I would have loved an easier way to clean the roller. Still, it's a powerful vacuum and the ability to switch from upright to above floor mode to powered lift-away with just a few clicks, make the device super convenient. Set-up: As an upright vacuum, the Powered Lift-Away Upright stands nearly 4 feet tall. The power cord reaches around 24 feet. The vacuum never felt too heavy to me, but even I can admit it isn't the lightest vacuum in the world. Power button and changes in floor type are set from the handle. Assembly from box to working vacuum shouldn't take more than a few minutes. There are a lot of buttons and latches on the device. It may take a bit to orientate yourself to which button does what, but it seemed pretty intuitive to me and my wife. With the exception of the roller, maintenance was pretty straight forward. Pros: Powerful. The vacuum has some power to it. It picked up debris missed by other vacuums. The swivel head is, as always with Shark vacuums, great. I really appreciate the HEPA Seal. The included lights on the handle and the motorized head, are also a nice touch. Cons: The motorized head accumulates hair. There's just no way around it. And it's not super easy to get to that head unit for cleaning. You have to flip the head unit upside down, remove a panel with either coins or a flathead screw driver (I recommend the coins), and then remove any hair with a straight edge or a pair of scissors. It's a clunky process and is easily my least favorite thing about the vacuum. Then there are the accessories. It comes with a pet attachment and a 12" crevice tool. I feel like that's the bare minimum and I would expect those with any vacuum. The attachments are supposed to be stored on the back of the vacuum, but in my experience, the pet multi-tool got in the way of wrapping the power cord. I have to take that attachment off every time I want to spool or unspool the power cord. Speaking of attachments, Shark has a lot of them on their website. There's home and car detail kit, dusting attachments, hard floor attachments, and the powered pet brush. I wish more attachments had come standard, but it's nice there are options that can be purchased separately. Conclusion: Nitpicks aside, I have enjoyed the Rotator Powered Lift-Away Deluxe Bagless 3-in-1 Upright Vacuum. I wish more accessories came included, but what's here works pretty well.RedScorpion

This is an “upgraded” model, but in my opinion, it’s so much worse! No doubt that the suction power is fabulous. My issues are: 1. They removed the suction control slider that let you control the level of suction for area rugs, carpet height, etc. This model only gives you two options – regular/carpet and high pile carpet/area rugs. I’ve found that I am unable to vacuum two of my area rugs because the suction is too strong and it was to suck up the rugs and the vacuum stops because it detects something stuck in the brush. 2. My previous model made it super easy to get to the brush. Two button on the top of the vacuum near the brush would pop open like a lid and I could take the brush roller out to clean it off. This model has no such thing. I have to flip the entire vacuum over to get to the brush and it does not come out. 3. My previous one came with the following attachments: – hard floor attachment – upholstery attachment – skinny crevice attachment – brush attachment that spins when attached, which can be used to clean stairs, upholstery, vehicle carpeting, etc. This model only comes with: – upholstery attachment – skinny crevice attachment 4. The previous model worked decently well on hard floors without the hard floor attachment. This model literally will not pick up anything smaller than a dime on hard floors without the hard floor attachment tool, which this DOES NOT COME WITH. You have to purchase it separately. The only thing that has been improved in my opinion is that a light has been added to the handheld hose. Sharks are great vacuums, but this model is awful. I do not recommend at all!!Midge

I was told it didn't have to be cleaned up from where it was used, but after first use, there were suds indicating a cleaning substance which I cleaned up and dried. I was told it was a safe to use around children and pets ingredient, but not what it is. I'm one of those picky, well-educated, caring humans who likes to investigate things and not take someone else's word. What exactly are all the ingredients in this product? I can't sweat it was this product, but something was stinging a small scratch on my finger. No, I'm not the type of person who sues and I never have. If I'm not happy, I just won't use the product. Unless it harms my family or pets because I've been deceived…. that's a whole different story.Sandra P.

My mom's dog is 17 years old, blind and incontinent. Bless his little heart… We are pretty good about his routine and taking him out on a schedule but as you can imagine, accidents will and DO happen. Now I did not have to spend alot on this product. But the claims made for the product sounded EXACTLY like what I was looking for. However, honestly speaking, I will tell you exactly my personal experience. It has an odd smell, not horrible but just odd. It does take care of lingering urine odors – for about 2-3 days, then the urine odor returns. So the MAIN question on the cleaning part of this product is answered. If the urine odor returns, I'm assuming the urine us still there. My overall opinion for the amount that I paid, $4-$7, it is worth just that.Frances

All of the reviews that state this thing works are true. My teenagers were in charge of keeping the litterbox clean because we have two cats. They do an excellent job of keeping up with it in general. They did, however, become a touch sluggish over the break. The smell was so awful that I was practically retching by the time I smelled it from down the hall and told them to clean it. The damage had been done, even with the clean litter, and all I could smell was cat urine. So I came on here and read all the 5-star ratings and decided that even if it only functioned half as well as the reviews said, it would be a success. So when it arrived, I just opened the bottle and poured about a third of the liquid over our laminate floor and sprayed it on the walls surrounding the litterbox. I set it aside for an hour. However, even standing outside the room, we instantly saw a difference. I also brought the litterbox outside and sprayed it with this stuff, but I didn't let it sit, instead wiping it down with baby wipes. After an hour, I washed everything out, replaced the clean litterbox in the room, and went outside to clear my nose to see if I could smell cat urine. I couldn't smell it. My children couldn't either. I invited my MOTHER (who despises cats and is a stickler for cleanliness) over for the grand verdict, and asked her to smell not only the house, but the room as well. She was taken aback by the fact that she couldn't smell anything, and she actually stated it smelled GOOD! It does have a light herbal aroma to it that isn't bad. My mother not smelling anything and remarking on how nice everything smelled is a huge praise, believe me. I would – and will – buy this product again. It works like a charm!!!mellie

I got this machine to clean up area rugs, especially because of the dog, there is more dirt ending on the carpet in the family room, regardless of top how well we clean his paws. I used the machine today for the first time and used it with the Bissell's detergent I had sitting around for years (from the previous machine I owed years ago). Since the carpet hasn't been cleaned for a while, I used deep clean setting. It refreshed the carpet all right, especially considering that some dirt has been there for a longer time and may be more stubborn (see pic for the dirt in the dirty water tank) . This being an area rug, I had an issue with tassels, as in spite of me being careful, they got sucked up by the brush. It would be convenient if the power button was closer to the handle as it would help with quicker shutting off and therefore prevent possible damage to the machine. It would be even better if it had an option for cleaning up fringes of the area rugs (I understand that this machine is designed with carpets and not necessarily with rugs in mind). When I finished cleaning and turned the machine off, it spit out a lot of fiber pulled from the rug. To me, that means that it is damaging to the rug, as it is effectively thinning it. Still, even that's ok cause the rug will likely last longer than me. My biggest complaint on this machine though is complexity on cleaning it and difficulty to clean the nozzle in particular (from the piled fiber remaining in it – see pic). I ended up using a zip tie to pull the dirt out. The brush is also not all that easy to clean and I ended up just wiping it the best I can. If I haven't run into difficulties described above (especially with cleaning the nozzle), I would give it 5 stars. I am glad I have gotten this machine as it did what I expected it to do.MJ

This is my third Bissell carpet cleaner over the last 15 years. Bissell has continued to do great job with the cleaning performance. I continue to be pleased seeing the imbedded hair and dirt being pulled from my carpet as I clean, and I have a very good vacuum. The ability to clean the machine after use has evolved tremendously because if you don't clean your machine properly, it won't clean as well for you later on. The cleaning tray is the best adaptation to this task yet, makes flushing your machine very easy to. I used to prop my machines up on the counter and spray them out over the sink to clean the brushes well enough. Plus, the cleaning tray is great to use to place your machine on while you change out your tanks…any dirty water residue no longer redeposits back onto your clean carpet. I used to always have a thick towel nearby to place the machine on. The tanks do require lots of flushing and refilling while you do a room, but to be fair, if the tanks were any larger the machine would be too heavy to deal with. Dry time was just only about 5-6 hours on the regular cleaning cycle. Running a fan in the room always helps with drying too. This machine pays for itself in just one use. I have three kids, two large dogs, and a cat so to be able to clean whenever the mood hits me is awesome.Kristen

Great carpet cleaner. I have two cats and a dog that go in and out all day. A carpet cleaner in my house is a must. I have now used this cleaner on the floors and the attachment on the couch. The best thing about it is it comes apart so much to clean after use to really rinse everything and get all the pet hair out. I read a lot of reviews that said you could only drain the dirty water from a small hole and therefore couldn't really clean out the dirty water tank. Whoever writes that hasn't read the directions on cleaning and storing. Yes, while you are in the middle of cleaning and need to just dump the dirty water so you can continue on it is a small hole that you use to do that. But when you are done and ready to really rinse the machine out for storage the other end opens up and you pull out the piece on the inside and can completely and easily clean out the dirty water tank. The piece does come out all the way. Some reviewers say it doesn't but it does. I also like the storage tray that it has slots for some of the attachments so everything stores into one place. I do not like that clean water and soap have to be mixed together in the clean water tank. The measure lines are helpful but when I have a very small mess that needs taking care of even the lowest marked level is too much soap and water. So I ended up just eyeballing it when I needed to clean a small spot on my couch. I hate to pour in more to the measure lines and waste the soap. Also because of this you cannot switch between a soap rinse and a water only rinse. I like to rinse with clean water after using soap to make sure there is no soap residue left behind to attract more dirt. To do that with this machine I have to empty the clean container and refill with just water. Doable but my previous machine had the water and soap separate so you could switch between the two. Not a deal breaker but a nice feature when it does that. Overall the pros outweigh the cons and I am happy with my purchase.Nerissa

I have always had good luck with Resolve Carpet Cleaner getting up whatever spots and stains we end up with, so when I saw this while trying to finish filling a box of "Prime Pantry" products, I didn't hesitate to add it to my order. Good thing I did too because within a week it earned its keep. A two-inch long ink mark appeared (was discovered) on our brand new, dove grey living room sofa shortly after a sales rep left. It was next to where he sat, and pretty much exactly where he placed his clipboard and pen. Since this was the ONLY time we have been in the living room since the sofa arrived, and only my husband and I have been in the house during this time, there is little doubt in my mind where the mark came from. this is by far one of the absolute best carpet shampooers I have ever had. I bought mine straight from the company and I would never ever change it for a different one it literally cleans everything and anything from your carpet! we have three dogs in our house so it comes in handy cleaning up after them and then just basic keeping the carpets clean about once every 3 weeks I'll go over it it just keeps it tidy and smelling fresh it doesn't take long to do it either I can shampoo every carpet in my house within an hour and it's dry within 6 hours depending on any rough areas that you might have to go over several times. for someone with rheumatoid arthritis this one is easy to handle. clean up afterwards is outstanding it comes apart so that you can wash it and it looks exactly like it did the day you bought it! All i needed to do was pop in the handle and its ready to go. I love tue seperate tanks for the dirty and clean water. I like that it has a seperate tank for cleaning solution so no waste. Works and feels like a vacuum very easy to use. Way lighter then my older carpet shampooer but at the same time powerful. HERE IS WHAT I LIKE THE MOST IT IS SO EASY TO CLEAN. Brush cover pops off you can de gunk all the brushes and suction area with ease. I have a bunny, 2 cats and a dog 4 kids hair is everywhere and it simply couldn't be easier to maintain. Heat dry works well carpet dryed pretty quick you can turn on dry only and make some extra passes to speed it up. Has a cute bag to keep attachments and hose in when not in use and i like that you can put the hose away so that its not constantly in the way or falling off while using upright functions. Minor nitpick if i had to find something would be that it only has the one attachment tool included but really how often do you really use all the different attachments? so over all super pleased with my purchase.Shelly

Wow what a GREAT CARPET CLEANER! So glad I decided to buy this! Carpets are 20 yrs. old since we built our home. Was just going to have carpets replaced, but first I figured I would try to clean one more time so decided to try this Hoover after reading all the reviews and I must say CARPETS LOOK LIKE NEW! We are totally AMAZED AT how great the carpets turned out! The Shampooer is very easy to use. Just remember that it is not a vacuum cleaner when you use it. You must go nice and slow and allow the shampooer to work. Took me about an hour for each room but WELL WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT! Better then renting or paying a service. Needless to say I will wait now to have carpets replaced.Drayton
