20 Best Detangler For African American Hair (Jan 2023 Update)

I really like using these products and how my hair feels after using them. I ordered the whole set during the flash sale and when I received the products the shampoo, conditioning spray, and the conditioner weren't closed properly so most of the product was in the bottom of the box. I sent an email about the issue but I received another email for a link that doesn't work to open a ticket. No one has reached out to me and I have been sent the same link twice. My previous order the pumps on the bottles were broken. I just chalked that up to shipping but when the products are sent to you already opened, that's a whole other issue.Marcia W.

This is one of my top five shampoos for people who have a four c hair texture! The smell is amazing. It definitely gives off hints of pomegranate and honey which is the perfect snow combination. It provides a thick rich and full leather without having to use 17 pumps of shampoo. I Projects like that mielle products are parabens and sulfates paraffins and mineral oil all free. I will be the first to say that being that I have for sea hair this is not a detangling product. Moisturizing absolutely. Cleaning your hair it also removes all the impurities. I was a little disappointed when I received my black Friday package from Mielle. I have ordered before and have been pleased but this time it was like everything was thrown in a box and shipped. The box was so beat up its like the products could have came out and almost would have im certain had it been tossed around any more and I know that part wasn't so much their fault but I figured it would have been put into another box to ship to prevent that problem. The products had no confetti at least to soften how its thrown around everything was so greasy i thought for sure a product or 3 were leaking and also nothing was wrapped at least in bubble wrap considering how it was boxed up. Literally just thrown in the box any kind of way. Continuing that the lightweight 25 Miracle Milk Leave-In Conditioner penetrates deep down to the follicle to prep, protect and moisturize hair for superior detangling and hydration. The unique formula undoes damage and treats dryness to control frizz and create soft, lustrous hair. I can say that even with my hair type, this leave-in did all of what it claims! It left my hair feeling more hydrated, less frizzy, and protected for the use of heating tools. It didn’t leave a sticky feel or greasy film, BUT be careful because it is possible if you overuse the product! It takes some trial and error, but I love this! Mizani 25 Miracle Milk can be used on wet or dry hair. I like to use it right out of the shower as a regular leave in conditioner or in the mornings to refresh my hair. When using it on dry hair, I prefer to spray it directly onto the palms of my hands which makes it easier to evenly work the product into my hair. I love that Miracle Milk has multiple different hair benefits. This saves me time and money since I only have to use one product instead of various different products such as a detangling spray, gloss, leave in conditioner etc. The mist is fine and even but the smell is a little bit to strong for my liking. Unfortunately the leave in conditioner contains silicones in the form of amodimethicone. I try my best to choose silicone free products for my wavy/ curly hair but sometimes it is not possible. I recommend using a deep cleansing shampoo once a week to help remove any excess build up.SMolina1175

Mizani 25 Miracle Milk leave in treatment has been my go to for the past two week.. I have long, color treated, and dry hair that I typically treat with a leave in after washing. This has a pleasant soft scent that smells so good after getting out of the shower that it puts me in a good mood. It’s a nourishing blend of Ferrell seed oil, and sourced coconut oil. I’m happy with the results because my hair is super soft and manageable without being weighed down with any heavy build up on my roots. My hair has nice volume that extends for a long period of time throughout the day. In addition; this is recommended for all hair types! I’ve enjoyed using this to detangle my daughters hair. She seems to forget how to use a brush over the weekends. The price is decent for a 8.5 fl .oz at $25.00. (the brand considers this a mini). If I could give this zero start I would. It left a sticky residue on ny hair that actually added to my tangle problem – I had to rewash it. Tried again a couple of weeks later just to see if I'd imagined it. Nope. Once hair had dried I could hardly get a combination though it and hair had a horrible tacky film on it. It's a three for three terrible review for DE's hair products; their shampoo and conditioner resulted in weeping sores on my scalp and hair that felt gross. I’ve been using this product for about two years now and will never stop! I naturally have lots of fine, delicate and curly hair which gets damaged easily when wet. Prior to using this product, I suffered from major breakage issues when attempting to detangle my hair. However, this spray has been a game changer! It hydrates my hair without making it greasy or oily, makes it easy for a brush or comb to pass through and has the added bonus of heat protection! This is a product I would never have looked at, assuming that Marula would be too heavy for my fine coloured hair and preferring to stick to specialist hair companies rather than a diversification from a skincare brand. However, having been professionally diagnosed with various ingredient allergies I’m having to be very careful as o the products I use. Since then I have suffered and struggled with knotted hair on a daily basis as all the products I would have used for de-tangling and so forth contains ingredients I can no longer use. I'm in love with Tender Head Detangling Treatment !! it does miracles in the hair !! my 7 year old daughter every time that the bathroom is a problem when it comes to brushing her hair, she always cries and cries because she gets tangled up! she has a lot of hair and even though I put treatments on her so that her hair does not get tangled and none of them worked like the Tender Head Detangling Treatment! It’s a sweeter smelling version of African Pride Pre-poo. Gives the hair a superb amount of slip to detangle before shampoo to cut detangling time later. My hairdresser suggested this product years ago and I have used it every day since. With life so currently confusing I forgot to buy it. As soon as I accidentally ran out my hair became dry, uncomfortable and wasn't itself at all. Especially from the pool and the sun. I have extremely thick, curly/wavy hair with a bad frizziness problem and my curls never wanting to look and be their natural, beautiful, individual selves. I tried Bumble & Bumble Hair Dresser’s Oil for a couple months and never really achieved any results, air drying or blow drying. When my hair dried completely it was still a frizzy mess. This is an amazing product! I have tried several other detanglers and nothing compares to this product. This product was recommended by my daughter’s stylist for her hair and it works! My daughter has fine, medium density hair and it gets tangled very easily. She used to run away when I had to brush her hair and that ended when I started applying this product to her hair. I wash her hair with shampoo, but don’t always use conditioner. I towel dry her hair and apply 4-5 pumps to her hair and, voila! The brush () slides through with a little effort, but no tears. In the last year, my hair has quickly gone from straightish hair, to wavy with some tight curls. My fine hair gets tangled like crazy. But this stuff actually lets me brush through the hair with no problems. I use it right after washing, then use some of the KM heat protectant. I have fiber curly hair and don’t feel this leaves much to be desired. I use to love this product. The spray bottle is fine it’s just thick. Need to apply to my hands then into my hair. This is such a cute and sturdy brush. My head is very sensitive and I absolutely hate brushing my hair and even more so when it’s dry. I have 3b type hair and I don’t normally use brushes with bristles like these anymore, but I decided to try it on my dry and tangled hair and I have to say that I like it. The bristles are a lot softer than I expected and they move with your hair while you brush so it makes it a lot less painful. And because the bristles are soft they can get damaged pretty easily. Thankfully, it comes with its own case that protects them! Overall I’m enjoying this brush and I think it’s time to ditch my old one for this one 3shana.a

This brush is the best brush I’ve honestly ever used on my curly hair. It is nice and flexible to reduce the tension on the hair which helps with breakage. It glides through the hair and makes it easy to detangle. It is also super easy to clean because the bristles are smooth and allows the hair to be pulled right off. I bought this detangler, the shampoo and conditioner for 130$ (I had a discount code) the price tag is WAY to high for what your getting. I get better results with redken or nexxus and for this price you get the largest bottle. I thought this could be a contender but the product it’s self does not justify the price. For the record I have long brown wavy hair. It works about as well at Giovanni products that you get at tj maxx for 10$. I feel like your mainly paying for the packaging which is beautiful btw. This stuff is AAHHHHMAAAZZING!! I literally bought the shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner and blow out cream as a heat protector for blowdrying my hair. I'm an African American woman. I don't know what my curl pattern is. It's a loose curl pattern and my hair is fine and thinning in some areas. I wanted to try a luxury shampoo and invest in a product line for healthier hair. I will spend the next three months using this product line to see how my hair truly likes it. The leave in smells amazing. I don't smell the wet dog smell people are talking about and I have two dogs. Maybe these are the people who don't like cilantro because it taste like soap too. I'm a 28 year old African-American female with relaxed hair (naturally it's very kinky/coily/afro). I don't heat style. After cleansing, I throw in four Dutch style braids, wrap my head in a silk scarf and go to bed. When I wake up, I take out the braids, "fluff" it to blend the sections and off I go. Very minimalist and time sensitive. When I received my Dermstore shipment of Oribe products – Priming Lotion, Curl Gelee and Styling Butter I was impressed by the beautiful boxes they came in (they're recycled from well managed forests and the writing is in vegetable ink); the bottles are beautiful too (you will want to keep and reuse); the smell is very pleasant, it's not over powering and nothing like you've smelled before. When I first applied it to my hair, I was NOT impressed, my hair didn't react like the lotion provided much "slip" like I would expect a detangling lotion to do. However, I was able to comb it through and continued to do my usual hair care regimen and went to bed. When I woke up the next morning and took down the braids, I had THE softest, shiniest, most defined curls I have ever had! I've used countless other brands in various forms (masques, treatments etc.) and while some have worked better than others, they've all left something to be desired. I tried many products such as olive oil collections, shea moisturizer collections etc and I must say if you have thick curly long hair that frizz this is the way to go. This leaves my hair soft and moisturized. I have only used it on wet hair so far but it is amazing. It allows me to comb or brush threw while removing the tangels with a easy glide. I'm very impressed and will be trying other product. Not sure it its made for dry hair yet. I’ve been using this product for a few months now, in fact I’m on my 4th jar or so of the Coconut Detangling Smoothie (and my second jar of the Coconut Hibiscus Detangling Smoothie). I will break down this review in a few components (scent, hydration, Detangling, definition, and Anti-frizz). -SCENT: I can honestly say that I much prefer the hibiscus one for the floral scent. If you have a sensitive nose I would be careful, as there are times when I find it can be a bit strong. However, the scent does settle down when it dries. -HYDRATION/MOISTURE: 10/10. I would even argue that the Hibiscus version is more moisturizing compared to the Coconut one. It keeps my hair quite hydrated for days at a time when I wear two strand twists as well. When I first put it on my hair, my hair does look white, but it sinks right in within a few minutes. -CURL DEFINITION: 8/10. I have a combination of mostly 4a hair (along with a few 4b and 3c areas). This product does a good job at defining my hair/ providing frizz free twist outs that hold up well for days. I took off two points because I find that my hair does get more defined with the regular Coconut Detangling Smoothie. DETANGLING: 9/10. This product works wonderfully to detangle your hair when used properly. I find that when the product is applied to dry hair it is not as effective as applying to very damp hair. You get maximum slip when your hair is wet or if the product is mixed with a small amount of water in your hand. ANTI-FRIZZ: 10/10. I can apply this product to dry hair to lay down my edges (before applying a scarf), or even to refresh my twists. My hair is smooth and has no frizz. On wash day my hair gets so sleek from using this product along with my oil on damp hair, and then tying it down with a scarf. My hair also did not get frizzy when I did a wash and go, or when I did a twist out. You also do not need very much product in order to get all the benefits this item has to offer. I personally only need 3-4 jars per year of this product on my tailbone length natural hair. I’m such a fan of this that I use it as my leave in/curl cream “all in one” product! I highly recommend this to anyone who has dry hair or does low maintenance styling. I’m so sad that my local Marshall’s/tj maxx no longer carries this product, but it is so worth it to buy it online although it costs $6 more per jar for me.Gabrielle

First let me say that I have bought and tried 2 shampoos, 2 conditioners and 2 leave-in conditioners made by Okay Pure Naturals from Marshalls. I have liked them all. When I saw this product, I had to give it a try. All I can say is, I really like this one too. I have been using this product for over two years. I have thin, very fine hair which is a LOT of work even just for every day use. I during the last two years my hair was falling out and I cried every time I had to go out. I had to resort to wearing a hairpiece! But over time my hair response nded to thi stuff and started slowly coming back in! My hairdresser commented on it and said what good condition it was in and to keep using it. Because Ulta likes to inflate my low ratings, let me preface this by saying I'm giving 2 stars. My hair is type 4, almost bra strap length, medium-high density and coarseness, and high shrinkage. This is an okay brush for detangling lower density hair, I think. I find that it can go through the ends pretty well. It works good on my thin/broken off areas, but it struggles to get through the fuller, higher density areas. Especially the roots. I have to section too much to get anywhere and I still feel resistance. Hair is the weakest when wet, so I'm hesitant to use much force. I think the teeth are too short and too stiff. I know the original Ultimate Detangler has more flexible teeth, and that there's a bigger one with more surface area, but there aren't any with longer teeth as far as I know. And having longer teeth is what would make it able to get through thicker sections easier. Brushes like the Wet Brush are the only brushes that go through my hair comfortably in the shower. Because they're so flexible and don't cause resistance, I don't have to worry about them ripping through my hair and can detangle pretty carelessly and without having to see what I'm doing. I think it'd work well for defining and smoothing in product on hair that's already been detangled, but it's marketed as a detangling tool, so that's how I'm judging it.Eoness

I used this Tangle Teaser brush on soaking wet hair with TGIN Miracle deep conditioner, and let me tell you this brush slipped through my hair like butter! I have 4C hair that is a huge chore to detangle. I had been using a wide tooth comb on soaking wet hair slathered with conditioner and my hair STILL was tough to detangle– BUT THIS BRUSH just glided through my hair so easily. I KNOW that if I had been using this brush to detangle all along I could have saved so much hair that's been ripped out in the past. The tangle Teaser also made my curls pop as I was using it- and that definitely wasn't happening when I detangled my hair with my wide tooth comb! I took off a star because even though it detangles the hair so well, using the brush is like holding a wet noodle because it's so slippery. They need to add a textured silicone grip on the handle, and/or make the handle with an oblong hole cut out in the middle of it so you can stick your hand in the hole and hold on to the brush while you detangle your hair.NJ1

This review is for people who struggle to brush their hair. I have extremely thick hair and have always struggled to untangle the massive knots I get, to the point where I'd just avoid brushing my hair all together and wear it up almost every day. I'm really pleased with how gently and effectively this product removes tangles without damage. It's a beautiful hairbrush and seems really durable. The bristles are kind of rough which I feel helps to stimulate your scalp, so if you are more sensitive to scalp pain I wouldn't recommend this product unless you're very gentle with it. Take note that you cannot use this product with heat, which is no issue for me as I never use heat on my hair. 10/10 recommend this product for people like me with similar hair concerns/ issues!Ceci

It leaves me with the least shedding and my hair is ready to be washed right after using and stays detangled during washing, conditioning, and styling. I definitely recommend it. I have straight hair and I've been really struggling with my curly haired daughter. I want to do right by her ahir so I've been searching for good products for her. I found cantu on another site and bought and have been using for months their regular line but wasn't exactly happy about using adult products on her. I was SO happy when I saw they have a kids range and it was actually accessible to me. Bought 2 of these coz I knew I'd love it. And I do! My daughter (16m) has some wavy and some curly hair. It can looks frizzy and unruly most of the time. I use only a little the spray and cream after a hair wash and her hair looks so much more tame. Curls more bouncy and defined. We have Asian/thin/long hair. The detangler didn’t work well, I had to keep combing through hair which didn’t give much. The spray head was also tough to push down. I had to use both hands to hold the bottle in an effort to force the spray a few times. The scent was fresh when sniffing from atop the bottle, but once it sprayed on hair and dried the scent was pretty foul. I returned it in exchange for the adult one, which smelled great, sprayed easily, and detangles. I may have bought a bad apple from reading other reviews. I was one of the lucky people who got chosen to participate in the #florencepanel where we leave an honest review for the free sample we received by Florence by Mills. The No Drama Leave-In Detangling Spray actually works just as well as other detanglers I've tried. What gives it a positive edge is that it's vegan and didn't leave my hair or hands sticky. The directions say to use on damp hair but I tried with both damp and dry and it worked just as well both ways. I also paired it with the Mane Character Vibes Hydrating Hair Mask and it left my hair so incredibly soft. I would say the only down side (for me personally) was that I wasn't in love with the scent. I really couldn't figure out why I didn't like it because it wasn't necessarily bad but it wasn't my favorite scent. I still really liked it overall though.Ashleigh

I was provided a free smile by Florence by Mills to write an honest review. (Received product on Sept 30) The Mane Character Vibes hair mask is great. I only used it in the bottom half of by hair for 5 mins, avoiding roots/scalp area since I have an oilier hair type. It smelled amazing, like a juicy watermelon scent. It reminded me of a product very similar to something they use at the salon where I get my hair done, and I think this product is more cost effective than buying the one from my salon. I think it really did hydrate and smooth my hair, usually when I wake up my hair is frizzy even with a satin pillowcase, but not today. My only suggestion is to use a little more than I did, I used a glob the size of how much moisturizer I put on my face. Seeing as my hair is long but not super long, I could probably do a little more next time. I give it a 9/10, still seems a little expensive to me. But it would be a great splurge, and at 5 ounces, will last you a while! I used also used this in conjunction with the No Drama detangling spray. As for the No Drama detangling spray, I think it worked well. I loved its floral rosy scent. To apply, I flipped my head over to avoid spraying my scalp and did maybe 5 sprays. It has a nice mist to it. Then I sort of scrunched it in, flipped my head back up, and used a wide toothed comb I had (similar to the one Florence came out with) to brush it through. I had no major tangling problems, and brushing took less time than it normally does with my wet brush. While being a detangler, this product also conditions and protects your hair. It reminds me of a hair elixir my local salon sells that does the same things, and the prices are about the same. I rate this 8/10, hard to tell if it helped with detangling since I usually use a brush, but I liked the scent and other benefits. A good splurge product.Emily T

Really loving this detangling spray!! It says to spray on hair and comb through, but I sprayed into my hands, ran them through my hair and then combed. Worked great!! The ends of my hair really feel extra-soft, and my hair is shinier. I like the smell of the product, too. Very fresh and feminine! My sample isn't gone yet, as a little goes a long way, but I've already placed an order for the full-sized bottle. Very excited to have this in my haircare collection!! I recently purchased this product from Target after someone recommended it. I am African American with curly textured hair and was a little skeptical if it would work for my hair. I was pleasantly surprised. It not only worked beautifully in detangling my hair after using the vegan silk shampoo and conditioner, but it softened and moisturized my curls that lasted days later. It smells great. My only complaint is the spray pump. It was almost as if the product was too thick to spray, which is strange because the product itself isn't that thick. So any time I need to use it, I have to take off the pump to get the product out.Hill22

Just recently I have been changing all of my hair products. Staying away from silicones have made a difference on my scalp and hair. Best way to use this is to pump the leave in conditioner on your hand and rub it with the other hand before putting it on your damp hair. Comb in through and blow dry. My scalp isn't itchy anymore and my hair is soft and manageable. Look up this product on EWG. It works for me. My hair is highlighted and easily prone to breakage.Judy

I’m not sure why this product has so many bad reviews – it’s amazing!! Quick backstory, my little sister has curly hair but the rest of us don’t. We didn’t know how to take care of her hair and she would get these giant knots that we couldn’t detangle and we had to cut the knots out after hours of trying (and crying). Her hair went from mid-back length to shoulder length and for curly hair that’s a LOT of hair that was cut thanks to our inexperience with curly hair knots. It was terrible. I made a vow that never again! I did research and found this brand and decided to give the detangler a try. It was amazing for us!! My little sister’s hair is healthy and we have NEVER had to cut her knots out again! I always make sure we have a bottle and a backup one just in case when it comes to hair washing day For reference, we’re Hispanic and she has curly hair. Her curls aren’t tight but they’re defined. I started purchasing it for her when she was 6 (she’s 9 now!) and it’s been great for us! Pacifica has been our go-to brand for her hair and her hair looks gorgeous now. We always buy her shampoos, conditioners, and detanglers from this brand and have had no issues with her hair. This detangler will get those knots out guaranteed!! Since she’s still young and doesn’t know how to take care of her hair here’s what we do: wash it with shampoo once, condition it with emphasis on the mid to ends of her hair, spray it with the detangler and work it in by spreading it downwards with our fingers, then gently detangle with fingers with tighter knots and use a wooden brush to gently detangle the rest (spraying more detangler if needed), after that we go in with a curl defining product. That’s it! No crying at all from my sister (sometimes she doesn’t even notice if we had to work knots out! That’s how nice it is) and it doesn’t take long for us. 100% recommend this product if you’re trying to learn to take care of curly hair. I don’t have curly hair personally but we’ve used it on my god sister, who has thin straight hair, and it also worked great!!Ashley

This is the holy grail of detanglers! Look no further. I originally ordered off their website few years ago and in the meantime used other detanglers, not a single brand can top this amazing stuff. High priced, average priced, it doesn’t matter you’ll find nothing better. I personally love the smell of this as well, it doesn’t smell perfumes or of chemicals. OK although it's a bit pricey at $27 I must admit this is the best detangler I've ever found. It is a 16oz bottle and it gets through knots without pulling or losing hair. It also adds some moisture to my hair and shine. I love the smell as well, it's all natural organic ingredients handmade fresh, no chemical scent. Which I suffer migraines so that's very important to me. It lists mostly oils; seed oils. Lemongrass is what I can smell, and it's listed. But everyone smells different things. I have extremely thick hair that has a tendency to become coarse if not properly conditioned. It also seems to grow like a sponge in humidity. Heavy masks and in shower conditioners help tremendously but have a tendency to cause build up as does the drawers full of serums and leave in conditioners I have unfortunately wasted money on. I typically use It's a 10 but love Sun Bum shampoo and conditioner so wanted to give this a shot. My hair feels absolutely incredible when I use this. Like silk ladies, pure silk. It is glossy, shiny, silky and I am in heaven. I wrap my hair in a towel after washing for a few until it isn't dripping wet. I spray this in my palm, rub my hands together and work it into the end and up about mid shaft. This helps me hit any areas that are drier and get into the layers without soaking my roots. I then blow dry and style as usual. It smells great coming out of the bottle like I've been frolicking on a beach in Bali. Once it's styled I don't smell it anymore. If you're on the fence get the travel size and give it a shot. Absolutely recommend for thick coarse hair.The Peach

I love this leave-in! It makes my hair soft and smooth, aids in detangling after I shower, and helps protect it before blow drying. I have very long hair and a little bit goes a long way. As an added bonus, the smell is incredible – I always feel like I'm on a tropical vacation any time I use it! It comes in a spray bottle but I find the consistency is too thick to spray directly onto my hair (it doesn't come out in a fine, even mist), so I simply spray into my hands first and then rub through.
