20 Best Detanglers For Curly Hair (Jan 2023 Update)

I have very fine, high porosity (very absorbent), blonde curly hair. I don't have the best of luck with styling creams, some work and some weigh my hair down, some feel very crispy, some make my hair look instantly greasy. This stuff works! I wash and condition (sun bum regular or Pacifica pineapple curls) and then put a little of this styling cream into my wet but not sopping wet hair. Then I sleep on it and in the morning my hair is good to go. Nice natural looking and feeling curls that stay in. It detangles my hair also, which is great because the only time I dare brush my hair is right before a shower. Can't even use a pick on it, fingers only 😐Curly white girl

As someone who has stick straight hair, I love this product. A disclaimer, my hair is not capable of getting that cute scrunched look. If I want curls, heat is my only option. I shower, add the styling cream (smells amazing), air dry overnight, and then curl in the morning. This is the only product that I have used that will help my hair hold the curls in all weather and all day. I also use very minimal hairspray after curling. I have 3 different textures of hair: the front/sides are soft, tight spirals, the back is frizzy, tight spirals, and the underneath is soft and wavy at most. We own a Newfoundland that loves the water. Last week of June we had a hot spell where temps were in the 90s consistently for days. Nights were humid. Trying to make sure all our dogs had plenty of water, we neglected to do a brush out at night under our Newfies chin and around his ears. Consequently mats formed over the hot days with areas not drying completely which made the mats worse. Mane n tail was recommended, it does work with smaller mats, I spent several moments every day working on the larger mats, following the directions, with very little success. We learned a valuable lesson with our Newfs fur and what we need to do better. Ended up cutting the larger mats to a smaller size, then applying Mane n Tail working on the smaller size mats. Our Newf was very patient but would only hold still for 1015 minutes provided I moved to different areas on his chin, chest and ears. Chewys delivery was great, smell of the product was fine. Its not a miracle mat untangler, also depends on the kind of fur being untangled. Works much better on our Great Pyrenees fur than our Newfie fur.Anonymous

Just purchased this detangler and Im in love. Ive tried so many different detangler products, all of which have left me in rage mode, frustrated beyond belief. I have long down to my booty, extremely thick, color treated, super wavy hair. A recipe for disaster. No exaggeration it usually takes me a half hour to brush my hair out, and its typically a painful irritating process. Not anymore I spray a liberal amount of this miracle spray into my hair, allow it to saturate for a few minutes, and brush out my tangles with ease, in no time I doubt Ill try anything else. Mizani 25 Miracle Milk can be used on wet or dry hair. I like to use it right out of the shower as a regular leave in conditioner or in the mornings to refresh my hair. When using it on dry hair, I prefer to spray it directly onto the palms of my hands which makes it easier to evenly work the product into my hair. I love that Miracle Milk has multiple different hair benefits. This saves me time and money since I only have to use one product instead of various different products such as a detangling spray, gloss, leave in conditioner etc. The mist is fine and even but the smell is a little bit to strong for my liking. Unfortunately the leave in conditioner contains silicones in the form of amodimethicone. I try my best to choose silicone free products for my wavy/ curly hair but sometimes it is not possible. Mizani 25 Miracle Milk leave in treatment has been my go to for the past two week.. I have long, color treated, and dry hair that I typically treat with a leave in after washing. This has a pleasant soft scent that smells so good after getting out of the shower that it puts me in a good mood. It’s a nourishing blend of Ferrell seed oil, and sourced coconut oil. I’m happy with the results because my hair is super soft and manageable without being weighed down with any heavy build up on my roots. My hair has nice volume that extends for a long period of time throughout the day. In addition; this is recommended for all hair types! I’ve enjoyed using this to detangle my daughters hair. She seems to forget how to use a brush over the weekends. The price is decent for a 8.5 fl .oz at $25.00. (the brand considers this a mini). If I could give this zero start I would. It left a sticky residue on ny hair that actually added to my tangle problem – I had to rewash it. Tried again a couple of weeks later just to see if I'd imagined it. Nope. Once hair had dried I could hardly get a combination though it and hair had a horrible tacky film on it. It's a three for three terrible review for DE's hair products; their shampoo and conditioner resulted in weeping sores on my scalp and hair that felt gross. I’ve been using this product for about two years now and will never stop! I naturally have lots of fine, delicate and curly hair which gets damaged easily when wet. Prior to using this product, I suffered from major breakage issues when attempting to detangle my hair. However, this spray has been a game changer! It hydrates my hair without making it greasy or oily, makes it easy for a brush or comb to pass through and has the added bonus of heat protection! This is a product I would never have looked at, assuming that Marula would be too heavy for my fine coloured hair and preferring to stick to specialist hair companies rather than a diversification from a skincare brand. However, having been professionally diagnosed with various ingredient allergies I’m having to be very careful as o the products I use. Since then I have suffered and struggled with knotted hair on a daily basis as all the products I would have used for de-tangling and so forth contains ingredients I can no longer use. I enjoyed this entire line, and especially the conditioner. It’s smells great and does a fair job at moisturizing- definitely a great choice for people with hair that would ideally use regular tea tree shampoo, but can’t due to how drying it can be. The reason it’s receiving less than 5 stars is primarily for the fact that even though I have little bad to say about it, I only used it 5 or so times before I was craving my favorites, and letting my husband finish the Paul Mitchell bottles. I bought this at Ulta at the end of September, 2022. It's a thick yellow liquid. It felt like my hair had wax on it in the shower, but it dried beautifully. I have untreated, long, blond hair. The strands glide off each other. My hair strands look thinner than before, but all muddiness is gone. My hair is much shinier, blonder, and smooth. I don't care for the scent but I can live with it. This item was not packed well and exploded in the package. Conditioner everywhere! I tried to return to Walmart but they told me to contact the seller. The seller requested photos, which I sent, and then I never heard from him again. I contacted him once more to see if I could get a refund and never heard a word. This is an amazing product! I have tried several other detanglers and nothing compares to this product. This product was recommended by my daughter’s stylist for her hair and it works! My daughter has fine, medium density hair and it gets tangled very easily. She used to run away when I had to brush her hair and that ended when I started applying this product to her hair. I wash her hair with shampoo, but don’t always use conditioner. I towel dry her hair and apply 4-5 pumps to her hair and, voila! The brush () slides through with a little effort, but no tears. I was a bit skeptical because i saw a lot of people with much more textured and thick hair saying that it didn’t work well for them for one reason or another. I have 2B hair that has suffered a lot of damage due to using heat & breakage from brushing with the wrong brush. Anyway i love the rosemary and mint oil from this company so i went ahead and got this product. my hair loves it, it leaves my hair looking really shiny and healthy even after straightening. Very badly packaged! Purchased this product with ten other products when everything was $6.99 (I believe it was a Black Friday special). EVERYTHING was damaged!! All ten of the products were thrown in a box with nothing securing them! Well, you can imagine what happened when going through the shipping process. a couple of the products were bursted open which caused all of the products to be greasy and sticky when they arrived to me. Extremely messy! I was highly disappointed but didn’t want to go through the trouble or sending them back. I really love the scent! So sweet with a hint of fruit but not overpowering. I have 3B curly hair and use it for CGM (curly girl method) styling. The product is nice to use on wet hair, makes it softer and easier to manage, it's also good to refresh your curls the next day after washing your hair (I make my hair slightly wet, and use it). I recommend applying some styling gel on top. Never made my hair greasy. As you only need a small amount, this bottle will last for a long time, years, if your hair is short or medium length. Best detangler for kids I have ever used. It has excellent ingredients that provide really good slip for combing through long tangled hair. I love that it's not just a ton of glycerin with a fruity scent that leaves the hair feeling sticky without actually helping detangle like most detanglers for kids do. I should add my kids have straight hair of varying density, thickness, and texture, but it works for all of them. I'm familiar with Shea Moisture because I have wavy hair, but I'm telling you this product works on multiple textures. I even use it on my own sometimes. I've struggled to find a detangler that my hair agreed with but FINALLY I found one I like (it's always the kid products that turn out to be the best). It smells divine (my boyfriend could not stop sniffing my hair lol) and it really helps detangle my hair. I mainly use it after I dry my hair in a microfiber towel so that it's not fully dry but it's also not soaking wet. I spray a few sprays into my hair and slowly comb it out. To start, this conditioner is in my opinion the best smelling, detangling miracle I have ever used. I have THREE daughters 1 with thick wavy small s curl patterned hair I think 3c. 1 with thick wavy big s curl patterned hair and 1 with literally a mix of both top half of her hair has med s curls and the back has small s curls. And they all have a coarse patch right on the top middle of their heads, smh. I said all of that because THIS conditioner softens, smooths, absolutely detangles and has a lasting scent for a few days. I looove this stuff and the funny thing is I have never tried on my hair. I have other Shea moisture favs for my hair. But PLEEASE give moms like me a larger bottle, a leave-in spray or cream for styling, and maybe a serum for moisture and shine. I am writing this after using this product the first time. My daughter is 4 with hair halfway down her back. She hates getting it brushed. I have tried expensive leave ins and conditioners, but she always fusses when I brush her hair. Just a few sprays of this in her hair and it was so much easier to brush through. Probably cut the brushing time in half and no more tears.Steph

I've used this bottle four times and on the fifth go the pump broke. I haven't even had a chance to use it enough times to give a thorough review of the actual product or a chance to use it on my toddlers curls. A couple things I can say. It didn't weigh down my curls. I'm not super confident it's providing any real moisture to them though. Maybe my pump breaking was just a one off but having a finger pump on such a large bottle is a terrible design in my opinion. This product defines curls with a glossy surface and bouncy movement. I like VitalCurl better than any of the other products on the market today because the scent is natural and not irritating to the nose and throat. Most cheaply made hair products these days make my family sneeze and irritate the throat. Also, it is easier to soften the crunch than the Climate Control. I have been using the VitaCurl line of products for about a month now and I cannot say enough great things about it! I use the shampoo, conditioner, the revitalizing mist and the VitaCurl gel. These products have saved me! I wore my hair straight for years because I didn’t know how to take care of my curls. My hair is fine and thin in the front, and thicker in the back. My hair is naturally curly. I tried many products to try and keep the freeze at bay. The humidity where I live is ridiculous. This actually helped me out so so much. My hubby bought me the dyson hair curler set, as soon as I was done the curls would fall and the frizz took over. I wanted to love the dyson, but was really regretting the amount my hubby paid for it. Mixed chicks saved me totally… I gave it a try with my dyson and it actually worked wonders. I air curled it yesterday and they are still looking good today. This does work on all hair types. My go to leave in. Blends in smoothly and my hair soaks up this product. What needs to be improved is the smell of this product because it's underwhelming. Also sometimes the product can leave my curls crunchy if I don't follow up with a smoothing styling cream or an oil. Other than that I find that these are small sacrifices based off the other leave-in conditioners that are on the market that will sometimes leave my hair with lots of residue or no moisturized. I am no hair expert. I have semi curly, semi wavy, straight in some places, a little dry here, a little oily there type of hair. It just doesn’t know what it is doing. I wash with a very good shampoo, condition, then put this absolute miracle, light weight leave-in conditioner in my hair and all of a sudden my hair gets its act together! For the most part this worked well. It does a decent job controlling frizz and defining curls too. The hold doesn't last long though, I did have to touch up through the day because it didn't hold up. I like it for quick errands around town but not if I need my curls to last all day. I found this to be an excellent light conditioner. I have 3 b hair that I bleach and dye fun colors so my hair is a bit damaged, but this product line has been really nice to my hair. The conditioner isn't going to be great for anyone with type 4 hair or above, but it is excellent for waves and 3 type curls because of how light weight it is. I wash my hair once or twice a week. I wash, rinse, condition, detangle, leave on for 5-10 minutes, rinse. I usually put the leave in conditioning treatment from Chi on after but while I am still in the shower. My hair type is of the tightest, driest coils (and curls) you can imagine – 4c, and what I would refer to as 4d. Wash day is a process, mainly because detangling takes so long, typically an hour and 1/2. I have to divide my long hair into four sections, and use as much product as possible. I only recently discovered this product, and the best thing I can say is it SIGNIFICANTLY reduced breakage while allowing a tangling teaser to get through it. There was barely any hair on my comb. However, I had to combine another product from the Aussie line, the Intense Hydration Oil. Its like the Detangling Milk needs assistance from the hydration oil. Those two together provide amazing slip, and smell wonderful. I layer it on thick, and really work it into my roots, without gathering my hair and creating more tangles in the process. Let me start with, I have frizzy curly damaged hair… so it’s hard to find a product that can style it right. That being said, this leave in mask did a pretty good job. I took a shower and about ten minutes later, I filled my hair with the leave in milk. Like any product, I didn’t put too much in, just enough to find a difference. The scent of the product is amazingggg, makes your whole head smell like flowers for hours. That was one of my favorite things I noticed, how great the product smelled in my hair. The product is user friendly, not messy at all and doesn’t run down your hands. I want to say that’s because of great packaging, so bonus points for that Aussie. Once the product was in my hair for a good amount of time, what I noticed right away was that it really did tame the frizz in my hair. What was surprising was how much frizz was tamed with this product, considering how little I put in my hair. So keep in mind, a little goes a long way with this product. As far as texture, my hair felt so soft and silky since I didn’t feel any of the frizz. The curls in my hair were emphasized, I was really impressed with this product after only using it once. I had the type of curls in my hair that people always compliment on… if that makes any sense. You know a product is great when you don’t have to use any other styling products to give your hair a good look. Typically I apply 2-3 different moose/gels in my hair before I leave my house, but when I used this leave in milk, I put nothing else in. The product alone styled my hair in a way that I didn’t need anything else! That is the absolute best thing about this product. Styling often takes so much time out of your day, so to know I have a product I can count on to use real quick out the shower is amazing. I’m going away for the summer and have been on the hunt for a quick styling cream for my hair to keep up with the frizz and humidity that comes with summer time weather. ok so I had knots in my hair, that was from shampooing it and letting it air dry, so I'm like I need to find something, this said extreme I'm like ok great, so when I first got the bottle first thought was small, I could definitely say I thought I was getting a bigger bottle, no I'm not good with maths, however the detangler worked, the instructions said not to wash it out, it suppose to be like a leave in, I ended up shampooing my hair after using the detangler, I sprayed some on a good decent amount I'm sure the bottle on half, maybe three quarter, and I took a big teeth comb and it was very easy to comb out I will say hair still fell out, but that doesn't matter, it was able to comb through the knots most importantly, before the detangler, the comb was on the verge of breaking, overall good purchase, just see myself buying another bottle faster than expected.AMAZING

We take my daughter to swim class two days out of the week and I started to notice that her hair was starting to get crispy ends and super dry. Her hair felt like she had accidentally put in a bowl of juice and let it dry out. My review is on the Daily cleanse line but since I couldn't find it, I'm placing my review on this one since they are fairly similar in my opinion. I love the Fairy Tales line of haircare in general. In my household, at any one given time, I've got a handful of their products in rotation. This particular line doesn't get as much hype as their others but should. The Daily cleanse shampoo is amazing. It is gentle, yet effective even on the oilest heads. I have three children under the age of 10 that all have different hair types and use this shampoo. My daughter (toddler) has wavy curly hair in the back that would turn into what we called a “rats nest” I’d wash her hair at night and by the middle of the next day her hair would look died out and was very knotted. I grabbed the curly q shampoo and conditioner and fell in love! I can go two days without washing her hair now. Her curls look hydrated and are super soft! My husband used it not knowing what it was and his natural curls were the best I’ve ever seen them until he went and straightened his hair lol. I’ve used it in my other kids who have straight hair and their hair comes out super soft. It does have a strong scent to it, but it is a very pleasant one. Okay I'm curious about this product and the claims it helps reduce shedding/fallout. I can say I had less shedding after using this shampoo. I will see how it does after a few washes. It wasn't very moisturizing for me though. The SNAG FREE pre shampoo had such great slip and had my hair feeling great. I was expecting a lot more from this shampoo. I’m a huge fan of pre-pooing since it makes washing my 3c/4a hair much easier and this pre-shampoo did not disappoint. I like that I could easily work it into larger sections so I didn’t have to spend too much time applying it. I sectioned my hair into 4 parts and then sectioned each of those into two (for a total of 8 sections) to work the product in. I went in with a quick finger detangle then followed up with my detangling brush. Let’s just say my curls were poppin! Made the shampooing and conditioning steps a breeze.a2b18

Okay when I first tried this I was like what ? This step has been a game changer in my curly routine. I never thought of detangling my hair before shampoo. Ever since I’ve been using this before, I definitely feel a huge difference when I use my shampoo. I feel like my hair gets a better cleanse after being detangle instead of shampooing on tangles hair. I have curly hair so sometimes the tangles are real. This stuff instantly makes my hair soooo soft and detangles sooo quick and easy. It’s honestly so genius and amazing for curls that easily get tangle or any type of hair texture. My daughter’s hairs were smooth and all of a sudden she got knots everyday. I bought this detangling spray and it helped tremendously. I would spray her wet hairs with 4-5 sprays before blow-drying. No more knots. I like it so much I bought 4 more bottles. I wash my daughter’s hairs everyday but I don’t know when we will run out of it.anna.c

I LOVE this detangler spray and so does my 7y year old. She has long, wavy hair that tangles faster than you can imagine. she is constantly moving, so her hair is ALWAYS getting knotted up. She has always cried when getting her hair combed. I have tried so many products, from cheap to VERY expensive to find a product that works like this one!!! After only a few days of using this product, her hair doesn't seem to knot up as easily and the tangles she does get comb out with ease. My daughter also happy with how much less time is needed to come out knots and that it "doesn't hurt so much". I wish I could have found this product YEARS ago!!Melanie

My 4 year old daughter has terribly tangle prone hair. We have tried a couple of other detangle products with not much luck. Brushing her hair has always been a daily battle. But this stuff is amazing! It works so well – I was able to brush almost completely through her hair after spraying it on with almost no effort. I still had to spend a couple of minutes on the really tough tangles, but in the past I couldn’t get them out at all and now they are completely gone. Happy customer! Will definitely buy again.LA82

I'm in love with Tender Head Detangling Treatment !! it does miracles in the hair !! my 7 year old daughter every time that the bathroom is a problem when it comes to brushing her hair, she always cries and cries because she gets tangled up! she has a lot of hair and even though I put treatments on her so that her hair does not get tangled and none of them worked like the Tender Head Detangling Treatment! I recommend it !! just put a good amount in the hair a few minutes before bathing and then I rinse it with shampoo and conditioner! and that's it !! and the best thing is that it smells delicious !!tanyela87

I was hesitant but this product is magic. Especially after a protective style. My daughter has very tight curled coils ill say about 4b hair. If you have an issue with your childs hair being very dry or just a tendered head child use this. I love this product.Renee Kroll

It’s a sweeter smelling version of African Pride Pre-poo. Gives the hair a superb amount of slip to detangle before shampoo to cut detangling time later. But I can’t help but feel like the African Pride one is a little better, cheaper and more cost effective since they sell larger jars. Just something to consider.Curlfriend

I searched for this and it popped up. Purchase two one for me and one for my daughter to use on my granddaughter. When I tell you this stuff is GOLD. Not only can I comb through my curls. But it leaves it soft and manageable for days! Buy it! You won’t regret it!! Five Stars!!!tball

I did not like this product. I gave it two stars because this line is normally good on black hair. And it worked at the moment but not long lasting moisture. Also I feel like it was very watery based, it didn’t have that greasy feel. I would apply and then hours later my daughters hair would look and feel dry. You can find this at Walmart, Target and Sally’s beauty. It’s not too expensive. I will not be repurchasing I found a product that works betterjennifer.s

I bought this detangler, the shampoo and conditioner for 130$ (I had a discount code) the price tag is WAY to high for what your getting. I get better results with redken or nexxus and for this price you get the largest bottle. I thought this could be a contender but the product it’s self does not justify the price. For the record I have long brown wavy hair. It works about as well at Giovanni products that you get at tj maxx for 10$. I feel like your mainly paying for the packaging which is beautiful btw. There’s just not enough product and it doesn’t work well enough for this to be a consistent buy. This is definitely not for thin hair or straight hair as the product is heavy.hiltz678

This stuff is AAHHHHMAAAZZING!! I literally bought the shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner and blow out cream as a heat protector for blowdrying my hair. I'm an African American woman. I don't know what my curl pattern is. It's a loose curl pattern and my hair is fine and thinning in some areas. I wanted to try a luxury shampoo and invest in a product line for healthier hair. I will spend the next three months using this product line to see how my hair truly likes it. The leave in smells amazing. I don't smell the wet dog smell people are talking about and I have two dogs. Maybe these are the people who don't like cilantro because it taste like soap too. But this stuff has amazing slip, instantly melts my tangles and my fingers glide through. It keeps my hair moisturized and soft the entire day and the next day and the next day. I'm a 28 year old African-American female with relaxed hair (naturally it's very kinky/coily/afro). I don't heat style. After cleansing, I throw in four Dutch style braids, wrap my head in a silk scarf and go to bed. When I wake up, I take out the braids, "fluff" it to blend the sections and off I go. Very minimalist and time sensitive. When I received my Dermstore shipment of Oribe products – Priming Lotion, Curl Gelee and Styling Butter I was impressed by the beautiful boxes they came in (they're recycled from well managed forests and the writing is in vegetable ink); the bottles are beautiful too (you will want to keep and reuse); the smell is very pleasant, it's not over powering and nothing like you've smelled before. When I first applied it to my hair, I was NOT impressed, my hair didn't react like the lotion provided much "slip" like I would expect a detangling lotion to do. However, I was able to comb it through and continued to do my usual hair care regimen and went to bed. When I woke up the next morning and took down the braids, I had THE softest, shiniest, most defined curls I have ever had! I've used countless other brands in various forms (masques, treatments etc.) and while some have worked better than others, they've all left something to be desired. This stuff left nothing to be desired. My hair was perfect and ready for the day. No flakes, no residue, no crunch – just flawless, soft, BOUNCY, beachy curls. I'm hooked!Anonymous
