Best Dyson For Hardwood Floors (2025 Update)

Vacuum cleaners have slowly been making the transition from uprights that you drag around the floor (common design for many decades) into hand-held models, both wired and battery powered wireless. There are many similarities between makes and models, but Dyson has decided to up the game with their new “Dyson Outsize” model. The Dyson Outsize is big… VERY big, for a hand-held. The dust and dirt collection bin is 150% larger (or more) than most other models on the market, and the roller/cleaner head is 25% larger as well. As a result, you can in theory, vacuum your whole house without having to stop in-between rooms to empty a small bin, as this one is large enough to handle most homes without stopping. The larger cleaner head also means fewer passes over a floor to cover the same ground compared to smaller units. Two batteries were included with my unit, so in theory you can also do that same house without having to recharge (well… maybe – more later). I wasn’t wanting for accessories. Mine came with the larger cleaner head, a small power head for cleaning furniture, three dust/brush ends that would be good for small furniture or cars, and a thin longer crevice tool, also good for cars or behind cushions, etc. The main extension wand, two batteries, two chargers, and a wall hanging unit completed a very full box. Note, there is NO floor stand included as with some other brands (boo) – just a bracket you can screw into your wall to hang the Dyson from when not in use. I didn’t need to really read the instructions for assembly – literally you just snap the extender into the main dust bin body, and snap whichever end tool you want to that, and once the batteries are charged and you attach one to the handle, you are ready to go. Pulling the trigger starts the unit and a small, round display screen facing you tells you which power level you’re using (auto mode, eco, or boost), as well as gives you a per-minute estimate on how long your battery will last before giving out. Dyson’s claim to fame on their models is that they will maintain full suction power until the battery dies, as opposed to weakening as the battery does, and I found this to be pretty much the case. Eco mode is for light cleaning (I found this best for harder non-carpeted floors) and gives you about 60 minutes of run time per full battery charge. Auto mode will vary the power depending on type of surface and need – more of a medium/normal clean, and gives you roughly 20-40 minutes of run time (I averaged around 30 minutes). Boost mode is a lot more powerful for deep cleaning, but, hold on… at best you’ll get 5-8 (or so) minutes from the battery using this mode. The batteries are pretty hefty in size and weight, and take about 3 ½ hours to charge (each). The Outsize is powerful. It did pull up dirt from my carpet that a lesser model missed, especially in boost mode. The auto mode did a little better than many others, and the eco mode again is just for light cleaning which I found to be best picking up crumbs from the kitchen wood floor (the cleaner head adjusts automatically for floor type). It was reasonably quiet, and the HEPA filter near the top of the bin filtered the air well, though it did create a “breeze” that knocked a few sheets of paper off of nearly tables as I passed. In terms of cleaning power and battery life so long as I kept it on auto or eco, I consider this to be a very good machine. Now… one thing: SIZE. As said earlier, this is a very large hand-held vacuum. By the time I got near the end of my house, my arm could definitely feel that I had been carrying a larger machine around. Not really a huge issue for me, but if you are buying this for someone else such as an older relative, a smaller person, or someone who’s not the strongest person around, they may have issues with the size and/or weight. I have few other complaints about the Dyson Outsize, but one is as mentioned earlier, the lack of an included floor stand, which some other brand models have. Not everyone is able to hang this from their wall (or if in a rental/apartment, you may not wish to screw a wall mount into the wall). A floor stand is, in my opinion, more convenient, so it would have been nice to see one included. Last, the price. Dyson is a premium vacuum brand, and you do pay for that. It does come with a full two year warranty (personally I wish it were more like 5 years at this price point). Only you can decide if it fits into your budget or not, but again, it is a very good machine. So, with the considerations you’ll need to take with size/weight/budget, I do recommend the Dyson Outsize.AtlantaGreg

This review is going to compare it to our older V10 Absolute. 1. Tools included in Outsize Absolute version are: High Torque XL cleaner head – provides better coverage (tool is wider) and also picks up dirt better than 'Direct Drive' on V10 – It adapts to the surface and speeds up or slow downs based on the resistance.. Laser Slim Fluffy™ cleaner head – this is much better than 'Soft roller' on V10. Laser seems like gimmick but actually helps finding missed spots on flat surfaces. Hair screw tool – works better than Mini motorised tool from V10 Combination tool – same as on V10 Quick-release mini soft dusting brush – same as on V10 Crevice tool – same as on V10. 2. Battery life Compared to our Dyson V10 its it has much better battery life – each setting lasts substantially longer than on V10 and with better suction. Battery in Outsize is swappable and second battery is included in the box so you you can swap it any time you run out of juice. Conveniently two chargers are in the box as well so you can have one attached permanently to docking station and you can use second one to charge second battery at the same time. Spare battery and battery life makes it very convenient even for large houses where V10 might not last long enough for full cleaning. 3. Size/weight Outsize is significantly larger (haven't measured) and heavier than V10 (2.4kg vs 1.6kg). Suction is better than on V10 probably at least partially because of that and you don't have to empty it as often but at the price of vacuum being more bulky and less convenient as cordless device. Generally this makes the Outsize much more convenient for large surfaces/floors but less convenient for hard to reach places, stairs etc. My wife still haven't decided if weight/size justifies the improvements but kids always pick V10 over Outsize when cleaning. 4. Other notes Tools are compatible between both versions. Same tool tested on both vacuums works better on Outsize than on V10 which I think can be attributed to better suction on Outsize compared to V10. Docking station is not compatible between V10 and Outsize due to different size of battery. Display on the back is nice addition and gives you graphical overview of remaining charge and after few seconds of continuous use shows estimated time so you have good indication how long battery will last. Button on back of Outsize to select modes is much more convenient than slider selector on V10. Tools are compatible between both versions. Same tool tested on both vacuums works better on Outsize than on V10 which I think can be attributed to better suction on Outsize compared to V10. Noise is very similar on the same settings between V10 and Outsize.Arek

I just received this Tuesday and so far I like it. I told myself if I didn’t have a life changing moment, I would return it for the price of this thing. I’ve been vacuum shopping for over a year since giving my vacuum away. I have all tile floors and I’m old school, so I can work a broom and mop lol. I figured I’d be okay and would get a really good one later. Well, later finally arrived!! I did some research and read a lot of reviews and decided on this one. I have a steam mop with a light and I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to come across a spot of missed dust in a corner. Off top, I knew the 2 brush heads and attachments would be exactly what I needed to combat the surface dirt and dust. I binged vacuumed my whole 3 bedroom apartment yesterday testing this thing out… I vacuumed appliances, vents, ceiling fans, area rugs, windows, base boards, furniture, etc. I did have to charge the chargers twice because I used them down to 0% using all three modes (depending on the area), but did not charge fully as I was not waiting the 3.5 hours. My second charges started with about 75% each charge. With that being said, I’m sure I can finish all my floors in one session. I typically vacuum main areas all together and then rooms separately. This was an abnormal cleaning session and I was just all over the place geeked. This thing is hands down an efficient tool. Definitely 5 stars for efficiency. There are so many tools for every job, and this really picks up the dust. I’m not sure how it does it because it handles so smoothly and is not very loud. The suction does not death grip the surfaces but is able to smoothly glide along and hit the particles just right to clean them up. It picks up bigger particles as well and it picked up a small clusters of dog hair from our Yorkie. She does not shed a lot but sometimes her hair will gather in a corner. Just for comparison for other dog owners. It does not kick particles back out over the floor at all. It’s a one pass for all tools as well, not just the brush rolls. Going over the base boards was really easy whereas before I was cleaning them with cleaner solution and a rag. My only gripe is that the Outsize is HEAVY!!! It really is. It’s easy to push over the floor and carpet but actually lifting the thing up to dust ceiling fans was treacherous. I am going to get a stepping stool to see if that helps not having to reach as high. I will continue to brain storm how to use the reach tools to shorten the actual reach of my arm. I think that will be the ultimate solution is finding new ways to reach the crevices as comfortably as possible. Storage and space wise, this thing is awesome. I just mounted my wall bracket and will be picking up the stand today. I will like using the stand in each room while I’m vacuuming instead of trying to set the thing down or lean it somewhere safe. So, I would recommend buying the stand. Overall, I would say get it! The price is steep but I’ve never had a vacuum cleaner that cuts my cleaning time by more than half so I feel that it’s worth the investment. This is my first stick vac ever and it’s exactly what I wanted, but I have nothing to compare it to. I just know the reviews I read are pretty spot on. OMG! I didn't think it was possible, but I've fallen in love with a vacuum. Tried cordless before and dissatisfied with suction, battery life, etc. This model came with all the attachments I could possibly use. Suction is fantastic for any vacuum, let alone a cordless. Keeps a charge long enough to vacuum whole house. Works great on all the area rugs, hardwoods and tile floors. Super easy to empty the canister too. Very easy to change attachments for upholstery, curtains, beds, walls, whatever. It can maneuver into almost any space. I have multiple pets and this baby can handle all their messes. I really loved this vacuum until the motor broke after only one year. I guess that’s what happens when you purchase a refurbished item vs a brand new one. The overall vacuum is great. The canister holds a lot before you need to empty it, and it truly lives up to being a “pet vacuum.” I have a husky and it was able to handle all of his fur. Perfect for vacuuming hardwood floors, as well as area rugs and dog beds. Definitely just purchase a brand new one instead of refurbished!Danni

This is to replace my first upright vacuum (a Dyson). I just never got used to it having decades of canister vacuum experience. The upright had good power and did floors very nicely but I had issues with the pull out extension. I considered other bagless vacuums but because I like the Dyson upright performance I opted to get this new CY18 canister and it is impressive. It has lots of suction and is one of the quietest vacuums I have owned. I can use the tools directly attached to the flexible hose handle which is what I wanted and it follows like a well mannered dog on a leash unlike my last canister was just the opposite and fought me every inch of the way. I vacuumed the whole house as soon as I got it and it's always surprising how much fine dirt these things pick up.g_ldboise

First, I should say that I am the mother of four fur babies, 2 cats and 2 big dogs. Then, when my boyfriend stays over on the weekends, he adds his 2 more dogs (one big and one small) to the mix. Between the 6 animals and my long hair, you can imagine how much hair is on my floors at any given time. For my entire life, growing up at home and after I moved out, I have always used a shop vac with a pool hose and a long metal pole with a brush head; which my dad created. We always hated the awkwardness of upright vacuums and the spinning heads just never worked on hard floors. After buying shop vacs every few years, because they are cheap and the motor blows, I decided to try the Dyson Cinetic Animal Canister. Thankfully, Dyson was offering $100 off; then with my BB&B coupon and cashback credit card bonuses, I ended up getting this thing for the same price as a normal vacuum costs. After one use, I completely fell in love with this machine! There are some flaws, but the good outweighs the bad in my book. Here are a list of pros and cons that I have encountered while using this machine over the past few months. Pros: • Whole-machine HEPA filtration and Certified asthma & allergy friendly! Woo no smells from the expelled air! My boyfriend really appreciates this aspect! He has horrible allergies, especially because of the cats. After purchasing this vacuum, he can breathe so much better at my house! • No filters to wash or buy! • Holy suction Batman! This thing is crazy powerful. • Suction release trigger for when it eats something it shouldn’t, like curtains. • Tangle free turbine tool worked so well that my boyfriend wanted to vacuum the cats with it! Don’t worry, I didn’t let him. This think works wonders on the carpeted cat-stle (what I call the cat castle or cat tree). • Long wand for hard to reach places. • Everything detaches so easily and the tools fit anywhere on the hose or wand. This makes it so simple to go from top to bottom, vacuuming everything in the room. I can do the ceilings, vents, fans, curtains, windows, base boards and floors! • 21.3 ft power cord and automatic rewind…amazing. • Light weight (because you are only having to lift the wand and attachments, not the entire machine. • Can get under furniture and those hard to reach places…like the ceiling! Good luck trying to get your upright vacuum on the ceiling….or the fans. • I don’t have carpet, and I don’t know who in their right mind would have carpet with animals, but the vacuum worked just fine on my low pile rugs. • Some people say that this thing is awkward to pull around because it is a canister. While that is probably true for someone who typically uses an upright, it is way better than the shop vacs that I have had. I don’t find this thing awkward at all, but I am use to pulling behind a canister. Cons: • Canister waaaaaay to small. To give you an idea, I vacuumed my 1400sq ft home, with one weeks worth of hair and needed to empty the bin 5 times. I wish it was bigger and held more. To combat this, I take my big janitor mop (the ones they use in schools), push it around the house for literally a minute. Then I vacuum. This allows me to pick up the hair and big debris (because my dogs have these big plastic bones that they chew) all at once so that I only have to empty the vacuum once. My boyfriend thinks that a vacuum that is so expensive should require no prep work, but I honestly did this with my shop vac too. It makes vacuuming so much easier and quicker. • Emptying the bin is not as simple as they make you believe. Yes, you push the button, but the door swings down and hangs in the way. The dirt gets all over the hanging door. Then you have to use the provided tool to unstick the hair from the sides of the canister, while the door flaps in your way. The instructions say to minimize dust/allergen contact, encase the bin tightly in a plastic bag. Well this doesn’t work because the above happens. I found the easiest way to empty the bin is to go outside to my large garbage can. • The combination tool is a horrible design. Instead of being two pieces, the small brush slides up and down on the thin wand. I wish the small brush was detachable, because when I use the thin wand to get in cracks (like between the couch cushions), the brush is in the way and the bristles get destroyed. • The wheels on the bottom of the canister roll ok, but for the ridiculous price of the machine, they suck. They should have used the same material as you would find on rollerblade wheels. • Instead of being power controlled, the rotating head rotates due to the suction. I wish there was a way to lock the head in place so that it does not rotate. It sucks up cat litter with no problem, but sometimes, it flings a few pieces out. I typically just detach the head and just use the suction. I think I might buy the alternate head that doesn’t spin. • I found the attachment storage to be random and awkward. Ok I broke down and purchased a Dyson after reading many positive reviews but to be honest this vacuum has not won me over in the last 9 months. The suction is adequate but I am not impressed with the turbo brush on carpets. I have hardwood floors with area rugs in most rooms and the articulating hard floor tool is excellent and mandatory for cleaning in my estimation. The cord is a good length and the tools are well designed and work well. I have to empty the bin once or twice while cleaning 1400 sq. foot home. I have come to dislike emptying the bin. The dirt and dust seems to cling to the bin like there is an electrostatic charge on the plastic and I have to use a paintbrush to get it moderately clean or wash it the sink to get it really clean. After a lifetime of using a bagged vacuum where you just change a bag I fear this bag-less vacuum is just not my cup of tea. I only wished I brought this back in the return timeframe and selected another brand/machine!Telrandy

I was looking to purchase a vacuum for my daughter who is moving into her first apartment. I contacted my brother who is what I will call a QVCaholic from kitchen items, appliances, food, outdoor furniture, did I mention kitchen items. He highly recommended not only the brand but I couldn't go wrong with the price and easy pay. It ended up both my brother and I purchased vacuums. He's giving her his vacuum and now I have a brand new vacuum which I absolutely love. I love the way it gets close to the baseboard with the "ball" action of the vacuum as opposed to my upright that I currently have. This vacuum deep cleans so much more than what I currently own. I researched a lot of vacuums before I made a purchase. I was willing to pay for a high quality product as I think its money well spent. I went back and forth between Shark and Dyson. I researched motors and suction as well as performance on hard floors vs carpet. We don't have any carpet in our home. I needed something that picked up the dust and dander after our 3 dogs. It had to be easy to maneuver because of our home size and it had to be easy to empty and store. I didn't want to fight with an appliance daily. I read this has Dyson's strongest suction. I can tell that it is stronger than previous vacuums. It gets everything. It met all of my wants and needs in a vacuum. It is very easy to use and moves quickly from room to room. It's easy to switch between floor and tools and to switch out tool heads as well. I like vacuuming with this because I can see the difference and my cleaning goes very quickly. We’ve had a dyson for 10 years the old style all floors the classic yellow and grey. All it ever needed was filters and it was built to last. Love dyson products. After retiring the old one and upgraded to our new one nothing has changed. The ball technology is super convient. When we got it in it was like we got a new member of the family me my wife and the kids all put it together, and marveled over its beauty. Seriously the thing is a beautiful household appliance lol. The kids wanted to use the attachments so my daughter did the top of the ceiling fan mind you she’s 8. And my son did underneath the couch. That’s how easy and user friendly this thing is. And it is extremely powerful. It’s like they took our old dc7 dyson shrunk it down and gave it a face lift. It’s my wife’s favorite thing to do now. Heck I even enjoy using it. I purchased the Dyson Articulating Hard Floor Tool from Home Essentials Direct and am completely satisfied. I bought it to use with my new Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Canister Animal (what a mouthful!) The tool is meant for previous vacuums with the silver clip. However, my new vacuum came with a silver-to-red adapter and it works perfectly on this tool. The tool comes with an adapter for even older Dyson vacuums. My four bedroom house is all hardwood flooring except the bathrooms, which are tile. They say the turbine head that came with the vacuum is good for wood floors and theyre probably right. However, I cant get over the idea that a rotating brunch will leave fine scratches in the wood. Besides, I cant reach deep under furniture with a power head like I can with this tool. This tool is soft and glides effortlessly over the wood. Its light, so you dont need to exert a lot of energy pushing it around. Because it rotates, I can reach into cramped spaces. With the canister wand I can reach deep under the sofa. Basically, it replaces a dust mop, which is why I bought the vacuum to begin with. Ive read some reviews that say the brushes gum up with hair. I did not have that problem and I have two shedding terriers. Like all brushes, it will get some hair in it. I just do like Ive done for every vacuum Ive ever used. When I get hair in the brush, I vacuum it out. Ive heard other reviewers say they think this tool should have come with the vacuum. That I definitely agree with. The vacuum should have also come with a tool bag, but thats another story. I suppose Dyson figures the turbo head is all you need, but for me this soft brush head is the perfect accessory for the Dyson canister.L.L.

We recently installed vinyl plank flooring in our living room and the rest of the first floor is all wood. I've been using my Dyson beater on the floors despite knowing it's not good for the floors. So I purchased this tool. It works very well on the hardwood and plank flooring. Super good getting dirt close to the wall as well as corners. We have a couple throw rugs and I thought I could use this tool to clean the surface, but it's difficult for this use. When you push or pull the articulating joint causes the floor attachment to angle up or down (away from the surface). I've been able to get some of it clean by pulling back very slowly while keeping the attachment at an angle. But it's rather cumbersome. Of course folks would say….just use the beater attachment! Yes that would be good but the attachment doesn't attach to the vacuum like the tools do, so I'd have to carry it with me (not practical) or make two trips … one for floor one for carpet. Regardless this is a great tool, perfect for keeping my hard floors clean AND has exceptional "dirt lifting" power like all my Dyson products.P.B.

Bought this because Best Buy popped up one of their "Frequently purchased with…." ads, and I guess I very wrongly assumed that it would actually work with the Dyson vacuum I was ordering. NOPE! Best Buy customers should be extremely careful about assuming that they're acting in the customer's best interest with those offers. They're not. I bought DC39 last week. It does not pick up fluff from the carpet in either mode. My previous Dyson had a spinner head which was excellent – and still is. It does not fit this model unless held on with duct tape. Built-in / designed-in obsolescence is a thorough nuisance. The spinner head which does fit DC39 costs £45.00 which I found out only after I had bought this model at Curry's. We should not have to pay extra for an essential tooI for a carpeted house. I keep having to empty the cylinder which has very limited capacity for our three-bedroomed house, and emptying it is a messy job – fine dust everywhere spilling out of the nozzle. All in all, a bit disappointing. Very tempted to take it back this weekend for a refund. There must be a better cylinder model than this one.Bernie51

I've waited a few months to write this review so as to give the machine a chance and not do it an injustice. However, I feel I've given it time and have to say I'm really disappointed. The good points are that it is light and powerful but these are not enough to win me over. I do not like that there is no brush. The alternative (I don't know how to describe it) just doesn't feel as though it is doing a good job at vacuuming the carpet. The action needed to extend the pipe feels as though it is made for left handed people and really cumbersome. The pipe/handle does not sit on the machine very well and when in place sits at such an angle that I have difficulty fitting it in the cupboard and the action to change the mechanism for different types of floor means having to do it by hand rather than being able to change it using a foot. These may seem picky but for the price paid I'm really disappointed and wish I hadn't thrown my Dyson animal away. A real shame.Travelbug

Dyson is the best vacuum brand I have ever owned. I purchased this handheld, portable vac about 1 year ago. It is light, easy to maneuver, and battery lasts nearly 45 minutes on a single charge, which is more than enough for the entire home. Maneuverability This vacuum is excellent. It has the famous Dyson roller ball making it super mobile. It also has wands you can attach and switch which makes it perfect for tight corners, stairs,and nearly any type of flooring. Ease of Maintenance It is easy to remove the dust and debris after each vacuum. Simple remove the canister and dump it out after each use, no messy bags. Suction Performance Not as powerful as the stand-up vac, but still pretty good and powerful suction. It gets everything from hardwoods, carpet you may have to go over a few areas more than once. Versatility The fact that it is handheld and doesn't have to be plugged in makes it extremely versatile for use in every room of the home. Design I like the design, but a few of the attachment heads don't work as well as others. Apart from this, it is light, easy to work around corners, and simple to work in any room when cleaning. I am delighted with my cordless Animal V8 Vac it is just what I was looking for, light and easy to use, and no cord to trip over, with a powerful suction, and always ready to go. At 80 + I was finding my old friend, A Slim all-floors upright vac over ten years old and still going strong rather too much for me, I was thinking of having someone in to clean for me. Now I have no need to, and my new Animal V8 will soon pay for itself. My daughter is very pleased to adopt my old Slim All-Floors vac as it had many more years of service to give. My old Dyson DC16 recently died and I was frantic to find a similar replacement. I was just looking for a cordless handheld to quickly vacuum up small areas or spot clean. I saw this V8 cordless Motorhead looked almost identical to my deceased Dyson and an extra perk was that it had a detachable wand so I wouldn't have to bend down/stretch for those hard to reach places. It was $100 off so I ordered it. Straight out of the box, it was heavy. My arm was instantly tired after trying to use it above my head. Multiple issues: The air powerful air coming out of the exhaust vents blows debris everywhere. My small contained mess was now scattered everywhere! The direct driver power head has a plastic guide on the front. This makes it impossible to suck up anything that is larger than that clearance space. I have a parrot that drops sunflower seed shells and Cheerio cereal on the floor and this Dyson just pushes them in front of the vacuum. No room for them to be picked up because of that guide. Strike 3 for me was emptying the dust container. You have to pull hard upward to lift the head off the vacuum which then triggers the dust container bottom to swing open. This did not work easily or smoothly at all. Basically, I had to use two hands to both pry the top part up while pulling the bottom flap down to empty. If it were just one small flaw, I'd get over it but this isn't an inexpensive vacuum! I am beyond disappointed and now I have to drag it back to the Club for a refund.TMc

At 80 + I was finding my old friend, A Slim all-floors upright vac over ten years old and still going strong rather too much for me, I was thinking of having someone in to clean for me. My old Dyson DC16 recently died and I was frantic to find a similar replacement. I was just looking for a cordless handheld to quickly vacuum up small areas or spot clean. I saw this V8 cordless Motorhead looked almost identical to my deceased Dyson and an extra perk was that it had a detachable wand so I wouldn't have to bend down/stretch for those hard to reach places. It was $100 off so I ordered it. Straight out of the box, it was heavy. My arm was instantly tired after trying to use it above my head. Multiple issues: The air powerful air coming out of the exhaust vents blows debris everywhere. My small contained mess was now scattered everywhere! The direct driver power head has a plastic guide on the front. This makes it impossible to suck up anything that is larger than that clearance space. I have a parrot that drops sunflower seed shells and Cheerio cereal on the floor and this Dyson just pushes them in front of the vacuum. No room for them to be picked up because of that guide. Strike 3 for me was emptying the dust container. You have to pull hard upward to lift the head off the vacuum which then triggers the dust container bottom to swing open. This did not work easily or smoothly at all. Basically, I had to use two hands to both pry the top part up while pulling the bottom flap down to empty. If it were just one small flaw, I'd get over it but this isn't an inexpensive vacuum! I am beyond disappointed and now I have to drag it back to the Club for a refund.TMc

I thought the old vacuum cleaner was doing a good job, but the first use of the Dyson proved me wrong! It pulled up more stuff than I thought possible. I have heard about the Dyson ball for years, but had no idea that it really would make maneuvering easier. Since we have mostly hard surface travertine floors with several large area rugs, I like that there is an easily accessible switch to turn the beater bar off for vacuuming off the rugs without worrying about scratching the stone floor. I have a total of 4 Dyson vacuums. Unfortunately I purchased 2 of these before I found out how inferior they are compared to the old ones that I have. I really do not like these ball units. If you try to wheel the unit to where you want to start vacuuming, the lock disengages and the head drops to the floor making it hard to get to your location. It is not just a defective one as both of my units do this. VERY frustrating. Then, when done vacuuming, it is really hard to lock back into the upright position. I feel I wasted my money on these 2. Purchased Hoover – 6 weeks ago Good points – delivered quickly, well packaged, looks solid, quite a few accessories, Looks and feel nice. Bad points ,way to heavy to pick up and move around as many have said before. Takes to long to charge, digital displays are just a gimmick and just add to the cost and running of the machine. The wall bracket is made from cheap plastic and feels like it’s going to break when slotting in and taking out the heavy hoover. Bracket looks very cheap for a premium product at the high end of the price bracket.. The Battery occasionally stops / starts for no reason – don’t know if this is a design feature to save on battery life – although I doubt it – very disappointing. Final thoughts – Disappointed!! – although I have bought Dyson hoovers in the past and been happy with them — i would find it hard to recommend this product for the reasons mentioned above, I had hoped for better. The hoover does not feel as if it’s any more powerful than previous models I’ve had before, it doesn’t live up to the Hype. I really wanted to love this vacuum. I was excited to receive it, but that excitement was short lived, much like the battery life. I charged the battery to full power, and started cleaning the couch. All was going well as it seem to be getting a lot of dust and dirt out of the cushions. 3 cushions in and the battery died. I charged it again and tried the floors. It seems to have good suction power, but does kick back a bunch of dirt. If you have the space and the money and want a high end “dust buster” then go for it. If you’re looking for something to clean your couch cushions or mattress like they showed on air, then keep looking. Unless you enjoy taking ALL day to do your chores and stopping every 15 mins to recharge the battery.JennyK1234

Just got this today. I have a 3 bedroom home that’s carpeted with the exception of kitchen and bathrooms. House was just cleaned two days ago. First, I did all floor surfaces in less then 30 minutes. Amazed at how much stuff it picked up. I didn’t realize there was a trigger you hold while using it. It’s so much easier then flipping a power on and off switch every time you stop or move things. I will also note battery came partially charged and I did not charge prior to using (I was too excited to try it.) no issues with how long this lasted or power in general. Love all the tools! This is a game changer for me. Also, this is so light weight and that makes it so much easier to move around with it. This is my favorite new toy! I researched for quite a while before settling on the V11. In every single review the V11 used the High Torque head. I didn't even realize another head was available on the V11 because I don't believe there ever was before. They do state what it is in the description but I doubt most people will notice, like I didn't. The problem with the Motorhead this version comes with is that it doesn't work on deep pile as well and it just pushes around larger debris on hard floors. It also doesn't have the holes on the side for edge cleaning. Aside from that, this works well. The amount of hair it pulled out of the carpet that my premium corded vacuum left behind is pretty remarkable. It's quiet and easy to use and comes with a lot of useful tools. The trigger is annoying, not because it's difficult or tiring to pull but because of the way it makes a lot of the vacuum weight rest on top of your finger. It gets uncomfortable after awhile. I would still recommend the V11, just not this version. I feel that Dyson putting a head on here from a couple of generations ago and calling it a sale is misleading.plmn

Bought it a few days ago and right away I put it to the test. —LONG REVIEW— First off, my old vacuum: Was using 7 year old corded vacuum that I had to dismantle (full dismantle with screwdrivers) a few times a year just to keep it running efficiently. It was cumbersome and heavy and I thought it was doing a thorough job. Was a hassle to clean the house with it. Compared to this vacuum, my old clunker was barely trying. The Dyson Animal V10: For the first clean I ran it hard, and I mean hard. It ran about 25 minutes on the highest setting, to be expected for the battery life. It pulled dirt, hair, dander… you name it it pulled it from the carpet. I just stood there shaking my head because I truly thought my last vacuum was cleaning as it pulled dirt too but, not like this. This Dyson is an efficiency king. The next run: I put it on the middle setting. Ran for about 40-45 min before it needed to rest/cooldown and recharge. In that time; I did the hardwood floors, kitchen, went back over the carpets, hallway, got the cobwebs out of the ceiling corners (couldn’t do that with my last vacuum!) and again…. The amount of dirt it pulled up! All the hard surface floors I was sweeping the traditional way first then vaccuming with my clunker and then having to go back behind it with a static collection pad on a swiffer then mop. You get the idea…. Long and tedious. A task I could do once a week. With this Dyson, it’s a daily spruce up now. Heck, it’s going to reduce the amount I mop simply because of how well it cleans the floors! I swear it polishes them from how the brushes are on the floor. After this clean: (cleaning the vacuum itself) I read the manual and decided to learn how to clean the vacuum and set to task. No screwdrivers needed. It’s easy to wipe out with a damp cloth, to clear the brushes with debris. All you need is a keyring, the metal ring itself to easily turn the dials on the two brush heads to release the brushes. The ease of cleaning the vacuum was not even comparable to my old one. The Dyson took me 10 minutes. Albeit I had to air out the filter after I rinsed it out which took a while. Just have to let that rest and I recommend having a fan blow air onto it so it dries faster. 3rd clean: Lowest setting, just a touch up. I thought I did an amazing job the past couple days but this thing surprised me still. The canister was halfway full of fur, dander, and things as I quickly took 15 min to do my house. This thing just can’t be beat. On the lowest setting, it was still able to show me that it was working hard. Even when the previous two days I put it to the test and thought there was no way there was anything left, this thing proved me wrong again. Battery didn’t even drop a bar on the display and it cleaned what my dog managed to shed the previous night. All in all: This thing is lightweight, easy to change attachments, and can’t be beat in its efficiency of dirt collection and disposal. It’s also easy to clean and take care of. After 3 days, my house is much cleaner. I do have to say though, this thing made me feel like I was living in filth and that I had never cleaned in my life. It put my Previous vacuum to absolute shame. All that time spent with my old one seems like wasted efforts compared to this Dyson beast. Alas; I have this thing now and sneezing less! Bonus: it’s much quieter! My dog doesn’t run from it anymore. He actually likes it! Con: one attachment I wish dyson would make for these, a hose attachment. Cause this thing would be amazing for cleaning out a car but it’s a bit bulky to get under seats. In fact, a hose would help for any tight spaces. Just hold the unit on one hand and clean with the other with whatever other attachment you need on the opposite end of the hose. So all in all, this vacuum is well worth the price. 5/5. The Good: The vacuum unit itself is exceptional, with excellent suction, ease of maintenance, run time, and insofar longevity; it competes well with your average full-sized canister vacuums, which is truly impressive given the size of the Dyson. The hype, on this front, is valid. The Bad: However, the well-built central unit is let down by tools and accessories with components made from fragile, heat-molded plastic. Essentially, only the mechanical drive components are made from metal (I think), but everything else is plastic. While Dyson boasts that the main machine body is made from "ABS Polycarbonate" (think: riot shields), the smaller components seem to be made of high-density polyethylene or similar material. Our smaller motorized head unit suffered a breakage in the head-to-guard joint, which should not be the case for a relatively new, seldom used part. The use of brittle plastic in such a high-wear area by the spinning rotor seems at best poor design, at worst planned obsolescence. I understand that full-metal construction is a thing of the past, but "full-plastic" construction is not a viable alternative; some components need to be metal, full stop. The Ugly: Unfortunately, warranty details are misleading as they apparently do not include the tools, and nowhere in the warranty documentation provided was there a distinction between "tools" and the "unit." While I understand that normal wear-and-tear is to be expected and therefore not covered by warranty, I am disappointed with the craftsmanship of a really expensive product that utilizes non-durable heat-molded plastic for high-stress areas, specifically around moving joints. The concern is that having both motorized head units break renders the unit unable to clean carpet or furniture fabric, reducing 90% of its utility, and will cost you ~$200 extra to purchase the new motorized heads. In closing; a great unit overall, but my confidence in the product is let down by the fragility of the core tools and some of the convenient language of the warranty provided. The first point we we make is that most of the 'positive' reviews are from customers who have not owned one for very long! Wait a couple of years (i.e. until the 'guarantee' has run out!) then see how you feel about it! Like other customers we have read on here – and other review sites – ours starting playing up just after the 2 year guarantee had expired. And like many other 'negative' reviewers it was the 'trigger' that became temperamental at first and has now ceased working altogether – and the machine won't take a charge now either. We called the Support number to be advised that our only option was a replacement "main body assembly" at £85 – but we then got cut-off somehow, so I called back and went through the entire process again to be told that the part we need is not available in stock! But this time we were given another option – have the machine collected to be serviced and repaired as necessary by Dyson for £79 – plus any parts that would be required including the replacement main body assembly at £85! Utterly shameful! For £600 you expect to get something that will be robust and long-lasting. When Dyson were entirely "Made in Britain" they were excellent – but now they are absolute rubbish. This is the second we have had since they are no longer 'British Made' – the first was appalling and we were only drawn to this second one by the fact that we didn't find anything any better when we first looked around and by 'customer reviews' which we now understand are largely written by people who havn't owned one for long enough! Our 2 and a bit year old Dyson v11 is now consigned to 'landfill' (which in itself rankles and we are extremely disappointed about!) – we will take our time this time around to find something better and will NEVER buy a Dyson again!Chris

I have used the V11 for 6weeks. The suction power is very impressive. The suction is better than my corded Miele vacuum cleaner and it is much quieter and way lighter. It has removed far more dirt than the Miele which is only two years old. The V11 has brought vacuuming into the 21st century. The various attachments are easily attached and removed, the machine is light, steers easily over carpets and hard floors. The ‘boost’ setting has huge suction power, which I rarely need to use, the ‘auto’ and ‘economy’ settings are perfectly adequate for 99% of usage. I have a Labrador which moults continuously and the V11 picks up all the dogs hairs without any problem from both carpets and hard floors. The battery is currently more than adequate, I have not yet run it flat, using it in a 3 bed size house. Emptying the bin is very simple and works easily. The floor brush head keeps itself clean, I,e,there are no hairs wrapped around the roller and after 6 weeks it still looks like new. Dare I say it is a joy to use – even the kids are using it because it is so easy to operate !! I’m not impressed by many things and I’ve had Bosch and Miele vacuum cleaners which were both good but, this V11 out scores them hands down, no contest. I would happily go out selling the Dyson V11 as it is such a a convincing machine, I highly recommend it. ( And no, I am not a dyson employee!! ).Geoff

Super quick, So much easier than getting the broom, sweeping and hoping to get it all with the dustpan. It helps keep my floors so much cleaner. I love that I don't have to deal with a vacuum cord either. I actually keep my floors clean every day with this than if I was sweeping or using a traditional vacuum. I also love the attachments, it makes getting to harder to reach places easier. The clip/button to empty is a little hard to press at first, I felt like I was breaking it, but I confirmed with the directions I was emptying appropriately (I was) so I kept pushing and it worked. It also gets easier to empty the more you use it. I can't even tell that I have an older version for the price I paid. My mom has a newer version and this one stands up to it the same. I think the main difference I notice is emptying the canister but I'll take that for the price. I've also used this to vacuum my couch since we have a dog and cat who like to use that as their bed and it works like a charm to get the pet fur. I will keep this forever!tess.goeller

So for some reason I used to be against the expensive Dyson products. I even used an older corded vacuum that made me feel that I was correct in my assumption that they were way over priced. But after buying a Hoover corded, where it quickly failed with an irreplaceable battery. Followed that with a cheap corded version, ok but a pain with a cord. And then a cheap knockoff of the Dyson style that has very little suction, and now I broke down and bought a Dyson to try it because the price was right. First off these ARE better than the cheaper knock-offs. A lot more suction with these. And all the parts fit together better and smoother connecting and disconnecting. Coming from an engineering background I immediately noticed how so many little things had been done right. I am impressed. I hope it holds up. If I had bought a Dyson in the first place I could have purchased the most expensive version for what I spent on all the others.aruba4me2

I have had my Dyson v7 for about two weeks now, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. The size / weight / no cord / maneuverability is perfect for getting to every spot that my old vacuum could not reach. I can now vacuum under the bed, on the bookcases, the stairs, the HVAC air return, etc with ease – and it also works great in the car! The suction is good, and having a simple bag-less canister is great. The only issue I have is not with the machine, but with my choice of which Dyson version to purchase. My Dyson v7 works exactly (actually better than) as advertised, but sometimes 30 minutes of run time (which is what is advertised for the v7) is a little shy of what I need. This is not the fault of the vacuum, but I should have purchased a Dyson rated for 60 minutes (the v10 or v11.) Luckily the recharge cycle is not that long – so this is not too much of an issue. Overall I am very happy with this purchase and would recomend it to anyone who wants to make the task of vacuuming easier, faster, and more enjoyable.StevenS

It has a long hose that is easy to detach and easily reaches the full height of my ceiling without having to stretch, likewise for my stairs, it reaches the top tread ( admittedly at full hose length) without the need for me to take the whole thing with me. Emptying the container is simply a click of a button and its done, after my previous cleaner, this was an absolute pleasure. I read a review that said cat hair etc wraps around the drum, i have to say I;ve used it now for nearly 4 weeks and the drum is as clear as the day i bought it. My last cleaner was continually getting snarled up with hair etc, leaving me to cut it out with scissors or a knife – not a pleasant task! So, the good points; Long hose reach (2 metre) long cable length (5 metre I think) awesome suction on hard floor or carpet and is adjustable! easy to empty Reasonably light weight. Compared to the Shark its light! Very easy to manoeuvre Bad points; there is only one attachment holder, this has to hold the long nozzle and the small head. A pleasure to use this new Dyson as it is a good looking creature, nice to handle and convenient to empty. The suction is powerful and the machine is relatively quiet to run compared to previous vacuum cleaners I have owned. Initially I had a little difficulty following some of the diagrammatic instructions in the manual, but once mastered the clicks and snaps required to attach/dismantle the various tools become second nature and it is so easy to switch from one cleaning mode to another. I particularly like the extra long lead which means that I can do virtually the whole house without unplugging, and the bendy long attachment which enables me to vacuum between the radiator and the wall to remove the dust of ages. The machine is very manoeuvrable when turning because of the ball design and the suction control means that I can do a thorough vacuum or a quick once-over on differing floor surfaces. Emptying the bin is quick and easy and because it is transparent I can see straight away when it needs doing, with no messy bag to change. I wipe round the bin with a moist cloth to keep it looking good. The filters need looking after and rinsing through with cold water at least once a month, and must be thoroughly dried before returning to their specific sites within the machine. Some of the tools sit on a peg at the side of the machine so can be carried around with it, especially useful when the stairs need vacuuming. The long stretchy hose reaches most of the stairs whilst the machine is on the ground floor. All of my friends and relatives who own any type of the Dyson vacuum cleaners absolutely made me believe that this product is the top of the line and the best of the best on the market. Well…I decided to see and check it out for myself and see how good this product really is and if it is really worth the price that it costs on the market. So when i received this vacuum cleaner the set up process was extremely easy, not confusing at all with a help of the instructions, it just takes a couple of minutes to snap in the parts into where they belong and the vacuum cleaner is ready for use! Right after I set it up, I couldn't hardly make the vacuum cleaner stand up straight, it would be constantly falling backwards, but that did not distract me and I decided to just look through and see what specific functions it has and does, and that's where I got disappointed. First of all, unlike the advertisement of this product states that it is a lightweight vacuum cleaner, it is actually not lightweight at all, i think its pretty heavy as it is around 15 lbs in weight, and that is what pretty much any other vacuum cleaner out there on the market weights. Also I have immediately noticed that the two attachments that do come in the box, are completely impossible to get attached anywhere on the side of the vacuum cleaner! That was a shocker! While vacuuming my carpets daily I love the ability to just snap on the attachments I need onto the hose and use it at any time I need them, this vacuum cleaner does not make it any easier on me, as the attachments only can be snapped on the actual hose while vacuuming , so that means that any time you need to use an attachment you have to go and find it wherever you placed it and then you will be able to use it, it is kinda very disappointing and not convenient whatsoever! That just means that I have to find a place where to store extra attachments and that is loss for me. Also I have noticed how small the dust chamber is, any of the other vacuum cleaners that I have ever owned had way bigger dust chamber which means you don't have to empty it out as often. The good thing about the dust chamber is that you just easily open it up with a snap off the button, so you will never make any mess. The cord of this product is pretty much as long as any other vacuum cleaner, which is about 18 feet or so in length, which is a plus. There are only two buttons that you can actually use – ON/OFF button, and also a brushroll button, which allows you turn it on while vacuuming the carpets or rugs and turn it off when vacuuming the floors. The actual hose gets snapped into the vacuum handle, which on one hand is very convenient and a space saver, but on the other hand, I always have trouble to pop it back into the handle and make it stay there. My biggest disappointment was the inability to adjust the vacuum cleaner to the height of the carpets, I thinks that it is a huge loss and is such a disappointment! I like when I can adjust to my carpet height, as it gives me an opportunity to actually control how well my vacuum cleaner will suck up all of the dirt and dust off my carpets and floors! This vacuum cleaner does not give you that option and it is extremely disappointing! I put this Dyson to a test, the same one I put all of my vacuums through – I dumped some dirt on the carpet and vacuumed it off, little did I know, is that this product would not be able to accomplish that! The dirt was still on the carpet, right there just sitting, and this vacuum cleaner just picked up the top layer off!!! Right after that, I brought my other vacuum cleaner (which is actually only cost under $100) into the room and it sucked all the remaining dirt right up!! Unbelievable! So yes, that was the only thing for me that I had to see with my own eyes in order to really decide for myself how good this product really is, and it left me absolutely disappointed, and I am actually surprised! So yes, while everybody screams and states that this vacuum cleaner is actually the best on the market, I guess everybody has to find out how good/bad it really is on their own. I guess the only feature that I actually do absolutely love about this Dyson vacuum cleaner is the steering effect, which allows me to steer it in any way possible in order to get in the toughest spots to pick up the dust and dirt, the steering function is pretty much the biggest plus and the greatest function of this vacuum cleaner. While this Dyson vacuum cleaner cleans up the basic dirt off your carpets and floors, it really does not have to my opinion that great of a suction, though it has some pluses, like -long cord, easy to open/empty dust chamber, long hose for the ease of reaching to the hardest spots, great corner cleaning abilities, washable filters, which you never have to buy and replace, not too loud, I can actually say it is a little quieter than any other vacuum cleaner thksjch

I am so upset and disappointed with the DC50. I had no idea such a well known and well respected firm such as Dyson could produce a vacuum that won't move on carpet. My parents have had Dysons since they came out and always loved them. I saw this one and though ideal size for my house, lightweight, brilliant. Stupidly impulse bought before looking up reviews online. Now I see its a common problem. Our carpet is medium pile, yet the vacuum initially is hard to push and I mean really hard, then the rotating brush just stops working which makes it practically impossible to push. I press the button to get the rotating brush going again, one push and it stops. Its not a fault with the machine because a lot of other people complain about this issue. I just can't believe theres a vacuum on the market that won't work on carpet. I now feel stuck with a very expensive mistake. One plus though, I cannot fault the suction (probably why its so hard to push) but the tiny bit of the living room I managed to do before slumping and crying because I wasted so much money, it sucked up loads of bits and dog hair that our old vacuum had completely missed.lynsmith

Although, it pains me somewhat to write a review on a vacuum cleaner, the Dyson range is clearly noteworthy…. and then some! I have been a proponent of the Dyson range for over 20 years; I continue to be a ardent supporter and the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor vacuum is no exception. I have, today, retired a long-serving (7 years) DC12 – with full honours! It served us extremely well (until yesterday, when it sadly gave up the ghost). Although I was completely satisfied with the retiree's performance; but, we had not appreciated how tired it had become. A 4-bed house, 2 teenagers, 2 dogs and recent new carpets. The "new kid on the block" has hit the carpets running. We had new carpets a year ago and today's first outing for the Small Ball has been first class; visibly discernible results. Outstanding suction, reduced noise and effortless to manoeuvre around the house. Thank you to the Dyson team for delivering another absolutely first class cleaning product! See you again in 6-8 years – hopefully not before (for the rights reasons).MAV1967

Having used this vacuum over the Christmas and New Year break when all the family and their dogs descend onto us, in excess of 5 Labradors, I can truly give the Dyson Small Ball 5 stars. On a daily basis it copes with the fallout of my 3 dogs and messy husband and although the dust bin is small and fills quickly I can only assume this is because it is so efficient, my carpets and rugs look way cleaner and it adjusts from hard to soft surfaces with ease. The compact and neat design of this machine has many advantages, the first being storage, I like my cleaner to be available but not in the way, this little beauty can be popped into a cupboard or even tucked away behind a sofa or armchair! (my little trick) With the retractable handle it folds down into a small unit and in a small house would be an ideal choice. The cleaning properties of the Small Ball are improved by the smaller brush head, it gets into little spaces easily and the wand features are amazing, the vacuum is well balanced and does not fall over when you are catching cobwebs, so much better with the tools on-board, nothing gets lost. With regard to the small dust bin, I found this a positive feature as you have to empty it on a regular basis thus avoiding the musty smells that can arise when the dirt is left in the bin to fester for a couple of weeks! You need to take the bin apart to empty it thoroughly if like me you have animals, as the hair shoots up the canister and can wedge in the top, but it's easy to do as long as you are not heavy handed. The Small Ball is an all round great machine, it easily copes with a large, messy house and I can highly recommend it.Mamabaz

I've always wanted a Dyson vacuum but didn't think I could afford one. So when I saw a refurbished model for sale I had to buy it. Even though it's ith; the charging dock, charging cord, plus a brush and nozzle head. The other reviews I've read complained about the size of canister and emptying it but I haven't had any problems myself. I have yet to accidentally hit the switch for emptying the canister but we'll see. The battery life could last little longer but as long as your not continuously running it on the max suction mode and don't live in a two story house you should be good. I wouldn't use in your vehicle since small rocks could damage it. But I'd recommend it for apartments and single story homes. Nonetheless I am pretty satisfied with the vacuum and the price was great!modestmichael89

I've owned this for three and a half years and purchased this after we moved into a small house with all hardwood floor. We ended up buying this as a refurbished model. I love this vacuum for how light it is, and cordless element is SO convenient. I used to be able to zoom around my house and get the whole house vacuumed (if it had been done the day before). I have 2 cats and like to do a quick vacuum each day so this works great for that. If I skip a day or a even a few days, theres no way the battery will allow me to vacuum the whole space. Additionally over the few yrs I've had it the battery just doesnt last as long as it used to. It does get clogged, so occasionally it has to be taken apart to remove hair. I would not pay full price for this brand new, but the cost of a refurbished is better. The small attachments work good to clean hard to get to spots in my car, and it also does a good job cleaning couches. Just this past Christmas I got the ball Dyson. I like to use the cordless for my stairs and a quick clean up, we use the ball plug in now more to vacuum the whole space. Overall I would recommend this, it would be especially good for someone with no pets and a smaller space.amanda.c
