not impressed, just received this sharpener. read the directions which are simple. I tried to put an edge on several knives, was not able to get the sharpener to stop the knives from being dull. i ran each knife in each groove 10 times parallel to the table without exerting pressure. After reading all of the negative reviews and some positive, I decided to try this sharpener. The cost is low and Walmart's return policy is a no-brainer. In comparison to my manual sharpener, this electric sharpener is awesome. I'm sure there are better (and more expensive) sharpeners out there, but this one is great for my needs. I sharpened about 30 knives in about 20 minutes, and they've never been more sharp! I agree with other reviews that this sharpener lacks power, but as long as you align the blade correctly in the slot, this won't be an issue. It may, however, be an issue as to how long it holds up. I found it more productive to slip the blade in the slot and pull it through with no downward pressure other than its own weight. This kept the speed of the motor constant and allowed the blade to align itself. Both cheap and expensive knives were sharpened perfectly. Many were serrated (including the so called permanently sharpened "Ginsu" knives…ha!). This was not a problem, although with repeated sharpenings I can foresee the serrations being honed away. The Work Sharp combo knife sharpener is a very useful, relatively simple to use tool that squeezes extra life out of your blades. Unlike a whetstone, which does take some craft to get a nice sharp blade, you simply put in the sharp edge against the abrasive belt when it's running, and quickly get a fresh edge. You can then use the ceramic honing guide to get a consistent finish. The sharpener itself is around 8 inches long, and 4 inches side, so it's not too large. It comes with an extra belt, which is handy. Presumably, you can also order additional belts if necessary. The construction of the sharpener is of medium grade plastic – it doesn't feel extremely sturdy, but so far hasn't been an issue. I only have a couple of minor suggestions. First, the box it comes in, is of the type that breaks down easily. This sounds like a minor point, but you do not use a sharpener every day, and it would be nice to have something sturdier to store it in. Also, the electrical cord does not wrap around the unit easily – again, not a major problem, but it can mean that there is greater risk for damage in storage. We have so many knives that have been needing to be sharpened so we decided to try the Work Sharp Combo Knife Sharpener which is designed to be a fast and easy sharpener. The Work Sharp combo knife sharpener. We've installed this little device at work, mainly for the work kitchen as the knives there are cheap and chronically dull. As far as using it, it can't get much easier. Keep the blade against the angle guide and seated, pull at a speed of 1" per second. Alternate left and right. Easy as pie. And the results? Well, they're alright. And this is the reason why it'll just stay at work for keeping the knives "sharp" there. See, this device has one style of belt which is 120 grit. That's a coarse belt. So it'll remove material quickly and get you a usable edge quickly. It's also permanently fixed at 25 degrees which I would much rather see at most 20. My kitchen knives at home are mostly 15 with a couple at 20. I will never use this sharpener on them as it'd wreck them. Now there is a ceramic honing rod to clean up the results. And the rod works well of course. If you're the type of person who is still using the knives you got 30 years ago as a wedding gift and have never sharpened them? This will definitely show an improvement, and you'll probably come away impressed as you're used to cutting with dull knives. If you've got a nicer set, don't even consider it. Everybody needs sharp knives! It's a safety thing. The Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener (Ken Onion Edition) is a very nicely built and packaged tool. I was expecting something special, and wasn't disappointed! The package comes with a good instruction sheet–and there are a number of useful videos you can watch to further enhance your product knowledge. At least read the instruction sheet! Setup is easy. Having some past experience with tools helps, but isn't a requirement. It's easy to tell that this product is thoughtfully designed, carefully crafted, and quite suitable for the task intended. After setting up the sharpener in my kitchen and reading the instructions twice, I assembled my pocket knives, hunting and fishing knives, kitchen knives, three pairs of scissors, and a hand pruner. It was a surprisingly large pile. I started working, and in just a few minutes the job was finished, and I was impressed. Don't get me wrong–there's a slight learning curve in using this tool. But it's a tool–designed to help you do a job better. It's not an automatic sharpener that does the job by itself. It requires a human operator who understands what he or she is doing, and why, and has the patience to learn how to do the job right. My first sharpening is now a few weeks in the past. The best knife sharpener I have ever owned. This knife sharpener allows sharpening a wide variety of knives blades even serrated blades. And allows you to sharpen blades to a fine point for cutting meat or slicing bread with a bit of a coarseness with the included six belts. The instructions are very clear and help you to decide which belt to use and How many times to use each belt to achieve the desired result for your knife. Even if you don’t not know how to sharpen a knife the instructions will guide you to the white point that you need. I use mostly kitchen knives and I am not a hunter. But cutting meat I do a lot so I particularly like a very fine point. Though I cut a lot of bread which I do not like a very fine point because I’d like some roughness to the edge which makes bread cutting easier and this sharpener will do that too on my straight edge bread knife. I have not tried the separation because my steak knives are special and utterly sharp. I cannot imagine a better knife sharpener that allows such a quick sustained sharp blade in just a few minutes. We should all know by now a sharp knife is a safer knife to use. And if you accidentally cut yourself, a sharp knife cut heals quicker than a dull cut. A recent trip to a well-known outdoor store I found their knife sharpening station used one of these Work Sharp knife sharpeners. If it can see daily use touching up countless blades, I'm confident it will hold up in my workshop as well. So far I've just touched up some high carbon steel dinner knives and they're sharper than new! They're sharp enough to shave my arm hair off! The sharpener is very good considering I hadn't regularly sharpened my Henkel knives very thoroughly prior to purchase, and they had gotten somewhat dull. I find the knives are sharp immediately after sharpening but require a touch-up sharpening every 2 weeks or so (I use my knives almost every day). My Grandfather used to sharpen my knives and they seemed to stay sharp for months; but, this is an easy to use method of keeping a fine edge as long as you keep on top of it.Joshua
While I do not cook often, I do insist on sharp cutlery when I use it. I sharpened my set of knives at the beginning of each year with the Chef's Choice, and keep them sharp in between by hand-honing them as needed.. There were no problems until last week, when the far right razor sharpener popped out, fortunately on the floor, not in my eye. With difficulty, I retrieved it before the dog did. I replaced the blade, carefully, but again it popped out. Sadly, one of my knives remained dull even after having repeated the sequence, as directed. The per-use cost of the device is now way too high, as I deem it unsafe to try again. Until the latest use, I was very satisfied, thus the middling rating. It works fairly well on long, wide bladed knives, but is almost usless on something steak knife length or less. The little abrasive wheels are not much thicker than sandpaper, and flex a lot, not removing much material. The edge left is very rough. I could do as well with a clamp and a file. The built in hone helps a little, but not much.
Unit better suited to maintaining an edge on your knife. If you are trying sharpen neglected dull knives you will have a lot of time and effort ahead of you. I received my unit defective right out of the box. One rubber footing is missing and unit isn't stable on the counter top when in use. Contacted Milk Street right away and received a response stating that they would look into a resolution. I have resisted buying an electric sharpener for a long, long time ? it felt like cheating. I have a good whetstone and ceramic sharpening ?steel.? Great for honing blade edges that already have a definite angle. I'd made some knifes and had hoped to set an edge angle to them. The worksharp would do it eventually but it would take a few days. So I had to grind the edge to sharpish and then hone it using the worksharp which got it to be a very keen edge. I would still recommend this for knife sharpening just have to be patient and the knife must be at the most dull to achieve a quick dull to sharp result.Lee P.
They spent the money where it mattered and skimped where it didn't. I use my left hand to steady it and my right to sharpen my knives and it works great. It flexes a little if you use too much force, but you'll break anything you push harder than required on. It's not going to replace a $300 system that a Bladesmith would need, but it's going to be great to occasionally sharpen my kitchen knives or a pocket knife. Very easy to use, and isn't going to take up a lot of space to store for the vast majority of time I have it.
Super easy to use, and it works great. Unless your knives are very large, or very small, this tool has you covered. This product is easy to use. I have used an electric kind in the past and found out to be noisy and not that great. My husband suggested this after reading positive reviews. I was a bit apprehensive at first thinking how does this little guy sharpen the way they say it does. The first few knives I sharpened I was like “ Meh” but realized I was not doing it correctly. So word to the wise, always read the directions and might I suggest watching the video. Only after doing this I realized how well it works. I purchased the Professional Model sharpener. The stainless steel is handsome AND it is heavier and more rigid than the nylon model. I appreciate the extra stability to help me make uniform strokes. I have a rack full of high-quality chef and kitchen knives. I have plenty of quality steel camp and pocket knives. I have steak knives. Some of my purchases were driven by knives becoming dull and by my inability to accurately sharpen them by eye-hand coordination. Sets of stones did not work for me. Ceramic Crock Sticks moved around too much to allow an even draw stroke. My WorkSharp Ken Onion belt grinder/sharpener took more time to set up than was convenient and I removed too much metal with each use. This system gives results It is always handy on my worktop. I have waited to provide a review until I got a chance to see how well the Professional VG2 Knife Sharpener worked. It has not disappointed, in fact, it has impressed me with how well it has worked to bring an edge back to our knives and how it well it keeps them sharp. So far have only used it for kitchen knives and drill bits. I am very pleased with the quality of the machine and the clearly written instructions. Just a little but of a learning curve but not too bad. I bought the drill bit sharpening jig and do glad I did. It is a bit intimidating to look at but the instructions walked me through its set up and use. It is awesome. First 1/4” bit sharpened was very easy and very pleased with result. I will never be frustrated again with all those dull bits just laying around. Now, whenever I spring for that lathe, I’ll be all set. Very happy with purchase and it arrived very quickly. This may sound like a commercial, but I’m not affiliated with the company that designed the Tormek T8 sharpening system. The T8, and all its accessories, are brilliantly designed, made with high-quality materials, and are fun to use. Some people had claimed that the Tormek system is a slow. I found just the opposite. Since sharpening settings are so precise and quickly repeatable, very tiny amounts of metal are removed. So, an edge can be touched up in a minute or two to razor sharpness. However, if you're doing a major regrind (e.g., a nicked edge, a significant angle change), then a "standard" 1750 RPM or 3500 RPM grinder would be much faster. (A Tormek accessory is available for use with such grinders. It handles all the specialized jigs designed for the T8.) Of course, you have to be careful not to burn the steel, especially delicate corners and edges. There’s zero chance of overheating a tool with the Tormek water-cooled system. The included manual can also be downloaded as a PDF file. That manual has the most thorough explanations and the clearest illustrations I’ve ever seen. A DVD is also included which shows you how to set up the machine and use all the accessories. Lots of YouTube videos are also available. The only valid criticism I’ve ever heard is that the Tormek T8 and its accessories are pricey. I agree. I have never been very good at sharpening with the traditional wetstone + diamond stone tools, and have therefore been trying to muddle through without using my chisels and planes unless absolutely necessary. Then the Tormek-8 arrived. I watched a few videos, then sharpened all my chisels and planes. A life-changing event! Even on old, hard, white oak my chisels cut cleanly and precisely, like never before. Great product!! I have used several makers and this is the best. However if used improperly, you will ruin both the tool and the blade. Always apply the tool to the blade gently using fingertips. Repeat several times checking for a good edge between strokes. Once it is sharp continuing to repeat is useless and will be extremely costly if you are sharpening an expensive knife. WARNING.. If you bare down, it will definitely sharpen the blade, while it takes a strip of forged metal with it, leaving you with a blade smaller than the tang. It will be sharp for slicing but impossible to dice or chop with.flyinsea
By pure coincidence I was looking for a quicker way to sharpen some knives without having to use my stone. I happened to look at the cover of my Milk St. magazine and there was a great article on knife sharpeners. Of course this looks A LOT different than what I was expecting to see as one of their top picks. But, I really do respect all the testing Americas Test Kitchen does. So, I took a chance and ordered it. I do have a higher quality of knives, so I was a bit nervous. I read the easy directions and got to work. Please don't worry about having the knife blade up, I used a very inexpensive rubber/silicon place mat to use as a base, this was very convenient as a non skid base. As the directions promised, you're going to need to make a few passes at first and then a few more. I used a very ripe tomato to test sharpness as I went along so I had a sharp edge, but wasn't taking too much off. My dull knives never stood a chance against this "little" gadget! To say I'm impressed with this sharpener is an understatement. I'm so happy to have SAFE SHARP knives back in my kitchen and look forward to using all of them for the jobs they were meant for every day!jojomont

not impressed, just received this sharpener. read the directions which are simple. I tried to put an edge on several knives, was not able to get the sharpener to stop the knives from being dull. i ran each knife in each groove 10 times parallel to the table without exerting pressure. After reading all of the negative reviews and some positive, I decided to try this sharpener. The cost is low and Walmart's return policy is a no-brainer. In comparison to my manual sharpener, this electric sharpener is awesome. I'm sure there are better (and more expensive) sharpeners out there, but this one is great for my needs. I sharpened about 30 knives in about 20 minutes, and they've never been more sharp! I agree with other reviews that this sharpener lacks power, but as long as you align the blade correctly in the slot, this won't be an issue. It may, however, be an issue as to how long it holds up. I found it more productive to slip the blade in the slot and pull it through with no downward pressure other than its own weight. This kept the speed of the motor constant and allowed the blade to align itself. Both cheap and expensive knives were sharpened perfectly. Many were serrated (including the so called permanently sharpened "Ginsu" knives…ha!). This was not a problem, although with repeated sharpenings I can foresee the serrations being honed away. Simple, quick and with great results! The Work Sharp system got my used kitchen knife set (21pc.-20 deg.) and various "well used" pocket and hunting knives (14 total-25deg.) all easily cutting newspaper in under 2 hours. Now to me, they are not razor sharp (able to safely cut facial hair), but plenty sharp enough to shave arm hair! I've used stones, sharpening steels, diamond plates and ceramics in the past, but none gave me the consistent and fast edge results as the WS! Then I tried out the 45 degree scissor sharpening feature. Have 10 cheap well used sets hanging around the shop and house for the past 25 years, 6 very nice and expensive sewing\quilting\fabric sets that my spouse uses daily and 4 kitchen heavy duty bone crunching tools. Some had gotten to the point of not even being usable. Using just the medium 220 belt (same I used on the above 30+ knives), I made just 3 light passes on each edge and…WOW, what a remarkable improvement in effortless cutting and trimming. The edge on the cheaper scissors are better than when new and the quality material and kitchen sets are returned to their new factory cutting abilities…Thanks WS! Overall, the design is very easy to get use to and I can see the sharpening process going even faster for future touch-ups. I can't comment on the long term durability of the sharpener (just got it ), but it runs smooth and quiet and appears to be well made. After 35 Knife, 40 Scissor edges and over 2 hrs. of sharpening, I wore out just one each of the 220 medium grit and 6000 fine grit belts (not bad for total reshaping all of those cutting tools). My main issues in trying to achieve sharp edges in the past 40 years were "extreme time spent" and "keeping consistent angles". This is a really cool tool. Have not had it long but have sharpened outdoor knives, small pocket knives, kitchen knives (paring, utility, carving) and scissors. Have not tried on any tools. A great addition to the work bench. First, this is no reflection on Walmart. The sharpener was as advertised. The shipping time was more than fine. As far as the sharpener goes, the one I bought must have been the first generation model. It does work. But, and there is always a "but" I was somewhat disappointed in the overall operation of the unit. The motor bogs down if any pressure is applied. There is no way one could sharpen a lawnmower blade with this sharpener. It will sharpen a knife that started out reasonably sharp in the first place. About three years ago, my wife and I had what turned out to be a great idea. We went a little outside of our budget and bought a full set of Henkel kitchen knives. Until that time, the best knives we’d ever owned were from the venerable “Ginsu” collection. Remember them from the TV ads? They weren’t bad knives, but compared to our new Henkel set, they were strictly 3rd rate. But as time passes, even the best knives will begin to become dull. And the ones we like best and use the most can get dull fairly fast. We had a sharpening service “take care” of them for us one time, but what ended up happening was that our knives came back to us sharper, but they were also chewed up and scored along the edge by whatever process was used. Enter the Work Sharp MK.2 Knife & Tool Sharpener. I’ve never owned a sharpener like this. It looks complicated coming out of the package, but all of necessary parts, instructions and sharpening tips are right there with the machine – and they’re very easy to follow. I’ve only had this tool for a few weeks – and I haven’t quite gotten through with the initial sharpening of all of our Henkels yet. In my case I set the speed to low, the angle to 20°, and flipped the edge guide up. I used the P220 medium belt. I placed my dull knife in the guide with the knife in contact with the guide and blade in contact with the belt. I powered on the machine with my index and middle finger with one hand. The other hand pulled the knife through the guide stopping at the tip of the knife near the middle of the belt. I continued this 3 to 5 times and then repeated on the opposite side. It was just that easy. My knives are now pretty sharp.shortbaldinasian
When I first got the Work Sharp knife and tool Sharpener, I was overwhelmed by the tool itself and also with the instructions. This is not a knife sharpener for a beginner. This is the real deal. By that I mean if you think that you are going to sharpen any knife or tools the old fashioned way, you're sadly mistaken. I hope I can relay to you about my personal shortcomings, while not misleading you about the effectiveness of this knife sharpener. I don't claim to be the sharpest knife in the drawer ( understanding the instructions), so please take my review with a grain of salt. Here goes….. I opened the package and took everything out so that I could better understand the proper way to use the Work Sharp knife sharpener. The tool itself is intimidating. It looks as though it belongs in a restaurant setting. Per the instructions, it's for "consumer use only." Next, I put aside the different sandpaper belts. Then I deep dived into the instructions. After a very few minutes, it dawned on me that I really didn't understand what I was doing, much less reading. What I did do, or accomplish was the sharpening of three (3) of my knives using the belt that was already on the tensioner. At even limited use, it did a very good job of sharpening the knives. Now if only I could digest the rest of the instructions, I'd be happy. I'm positive that once you master the instructions, you will have a great knife and tool Sharpener.Richard

I was looking at a couple of the Chefs Choice knife sharpeners. I particularly like the XV sharpener but all of my knives are of the softer steel European made. My wife wanted a sharpener that did not have to be on the counter all the time and would keep the sharp edge the longest. That is why I decided on the Chefs Choice 120 knife sharpener. It put a nice sharp edge on all our knives. So sharp my wife cut her finger and did not notice it tater on in the day. she was lucky that cut drew no blood. I like the XV sharpener but in my reading the experts said the 15% angle is great for cutting but not for chopping because it doesnt hold its edge real well and needs to have the blade continually retouched due to the European blades are made of softer steel and don hold the 15% edge as well as the harder Japanese steel does. I am sure both sharpeners do a great job, but for the knives in my kitchen the Chefs Choice 120 was the right sharpener for us. The only Con i could tell was that for wider blade, I had to put painter's tape on the size of my wide knives so the sharpener would not scratch the side of the blades.oklarr
After using a steel and attempting sharpening by using whetstones my knives work 200% better than they have in years. I put through my fathers 20+ year old trident knives, they were so dull that it actually took many passes through the first stage but you could feel the improvement on each pass (with a sacrificial slightly soft capsicum). Clearly we had taken some metal off but i think the knives had been mis-treated over the years so needed a whole new surface. Meanwhile my newer knives are sharper than their factory sharpen and are working really great. Only complaint is that it still takes a bit of practice to get it through correctly and at an even pace to ensure the entire length of the blade is sharpened well. The manuals don't help a lot but after some digging youtube came to the rescue.Michael
