20 Best Electric Razor For Elderly Man (Feb 2023 Update)

Purchased a Series 9 in January of 2022. I believe the manufacturer states that you should be able to get 18 months out of a blade (which are very expensive to replace). I started finding that my beard was taking longer and longer each day to get a good shave out of and as a result, the battery lasts me 5 days at best. This started to happen after about 4-5 months of use. It is difficult to get to the 6 months point without replacing the blade no less 18 months. Given that, it is a very expensive shaver to own and I am disappointed. My Braun series 5 performed much much better but it's been discontinued.stinger

I have used this shaver only twice. Both times dry, once after 3 days of not shaving, once after on day. Shaver is noisy, but the shave is smooth. After 3 days takes a long time. You have to passed on your face several times. If you shave couple of times a week this is not the right shaver. Don't cut the fine hairs on the neck. Curvature of the shaving head dose not allow to reach under the nose. But you can use the trimmer. Trimmer width is too narrow and too close to shaver head. This shaver is not for traveling. Cleaning part to bulky and cleaning solution can not be put in carrying case (TSA), so you need to carry a suite case and pay extra, unless you are travelling first class. No plastic cover for shaving head, but carrying case quite good and sturdy. A plastic cap can be produced in China for about 50 cents. Consumables. Require cleaning solution and lubricant oil. All extra expenses. This a good shaver, but not suitable if you travel and if you don't mind the bulky cleaning and consumable. They don't want to sell just a shaver, but also a steady income stream by selling consumable.Jeffj

I purchased this product about 2 months ago when my older 7000 series shaver finally gave out after more than 5 years. I had used a 3000 series before, and the 7000 was a great upgrade and provided a clean comfortable shave. I thought the 9000 series was an upgrade from the 7000, but apparently I was completely wrong. My first shave with this razor was extremely painful, pulling hairs constantly and also provided a much worse cut than my old 7000 series. After my first shave with it the very first response my wife gave me was "Why didn't you use the new shaver you just got?" That hurt almost as much as the shave. In any case, I decided it might just be the new style of shaver head and my beard/face needed time to "adapt" and gave it a while. After one month, no change, and today is the 2 month anniversary and I'm done with this razor. It still pulls multiple times every shave with just one day worth of hair growth, and I have to shave twice as long (at least) to get anywhere near the closeness of shave I get with my old 7000 series. I think part of the issue is the new foil design, specifically the gold cover which appears to have box holes that basically just grab and yank out hair, baffling design to me. In any case, I will warn everyone I know to stay very far away from this razor. If you happen to be unlucky and have one yourself, I'd urge you to upgrade to a 7000 series shave as you will find it works better than this razor in every way. Shaving in the morning shouldn't feel like punishment and having to suffer through constant yanks and burns, and that's all this razor provides. I honestly have no idea where the positive reviews for this thing come from, unless they've just never used an electric shaver before and don't know how much better things can be when they are done right.DevDan

I have always been leary of buying an electric razor. However, over the past few years the cost of razor blades has skyrocketed and the quality of shave has deteriorated just as fast. I was tired of paying for razors that gave you a lousy shave. I was in the military and I know what a close shave is supposed to feel like. I took the plunge and purchased this razor. This razor has worked really well. The quality and closeness of shave is equal to anything I could get from a disposable razor. It takes a couple of weeks for your face to get used to shaving with an electric razor. It has been almost a month since I purchased the razor and I no longer feel any irritation at all. It is very easy to clean and the charge lasts for weeks. I will not back to using high priced low quality razors. I have long used cartridge razors, but no more. I’ll preface this with I have sensitive skin and prone to ingrown hairs & razor bumps. I used this in both my face and legs, and it’s the smoothest, least irritated my skin has ever been. There are even some contours I could get smooth with a good cartridge razor that I was able to get with this. I used it ‘wet’ with a foaming shaving cream. I also exfoliated first. I have never been as disappointed with a product as I was with this one. After all the glowing reviews and even some ratings calling it the best electric shaver ever made I took the plunge and switched from my Norelco. I have used for two weeks and the shaves are abysmal. Even after going over the same area 3-4 times there is still stubble left. Shaving the neck is even worse. Going over every area of my neck from every conceivable angle and there is still substantial stubble left. The only good comment I can make is that it feels good in the hand. ReDisappointment

When I received the product I briefly used it to shave my face. The product seemed to do a very good job of coverage as well as precisely removing the fine hair. It was a lot better than my current product. The price of the product is well worth it, considering it only takes one hour to charge. I looked at other products of this caliber and most of them took a lot longer to charge. The fact that you use a USB plug to charge the product also means it uses less electricity. Another great rotary in Philips' lineup. This series does solve the issue of many complaints regarding the detachable trimmer and heads of other Philips shavers – it has the traditional flip-top head and pop-up trimmer. This adds to the bulk of the shaver, body and head, but precludes having to keep track of a separate trimmer and remove the head for cleaning, and it works reasonably well, although for me the trimmer isn't quite as effective as the SmartClick attachments for the Series 9000 shavers. The ComfortGlide Rings really are effective, and provide a frictionless shave, although in this model they are slightly larger than the Anti-Friction rings of the S7940 for example, and require some maneuvering to get around tight areas. The Quick Clean pods use the same cleaning solution as the SmartClean cartridges for the SmartClean stations, which is excellent for cleaning and lubricating the shaver. The Quick Clean Pod is unpowered however, and uses the shaver's power, reducing it by about 1 percent per cleaning, although on a positive note doesn't require cords or cables and is more compact – actually usable for travel. The GroomTribe app is the Achilles Heel of all these Bluetooth shavers, and in particular this model (S7782), because there's no information regarding this particular shaver – the app seems exclusively to recognize only the S7940 shaver. On the plus side, the S7782 will connect, and it does record the shaving time and the percentage of rotation (which improves shaving efficiency), although the motion sensor algorithm in the shaver appears not to recognize the correct rotational movement about half the time. The good news is you don't actually need the app, and this shaver has an LED screen that provides all the essential information about the shaver, including battery life, cleaning information and the previously mentioned inaccurate rotation statistics. The shaving heads (SH71/52) only have a single cutting ring, but actually are comfortable and provide a very close shave. I grew up with and have used Norelco rotary shavers and body groom tools all my adult life. My old one, probably close to 20 years now, still works but there is no availability of replacement heads anymore and some wear finally. This is an excellent shaver and I am very happy I got it. I considered the 3000 and 5000 series, but 3000 seems to use lower end heads, and while the 5000 uses the same as this, the hard travel case is essential to me and purchased as a separate accessory brings the cost close enough that it was worth it to just get the higher end kit. The shave is great; I haven't yet tried out the cleaning pod. The shaver cleans very well under running water following the instructions. I also have some extras from my previous Philips/Norelco products that I use with this, such as combs, cleaning brushes and a spare charger.Chris_P

I switched back to Norelco after a 3-year switch to Braun. Glad I returned to Norelco, unquestionably the shave was the closest I have ever had with an electric shaver. Also, I like that it is quiet and easy to clean manually if I don't use the cleaning pod. However, the new head design is a step backward in my opinion. Its large gaps and dead space between the edge of the head and the blades make for difficulty in smoothly sliding the shaver over my face and repeated pinching when shaving above my lip. I would gladly pay the same price for a 7000 with the old head design coupled with the new minimalist stand and self-powered cleaning pod, that would be a 5-star shaver! But Norelco is not offering that option. I use the Bluetooth feature but will discontinue eventually as after a certain period of time it becomes superfluous.Tomthewise

I bought this one seven months ago. Starting three weeks ago, each time I turn it on, it runs insanely loud for about 20 seconds, then it starts to quite down and run normally. Very consist problem since. There is some sort of power supply problem. I will return it soon.Jerry

Really well made. Everything is really nice. The only issue is that it takes double the amount of strokes to shave as a Braun shaver. However, you get significantly less skin irritation with this compared to Braun. This model is made in Japan which is nice. The protective cover is a bit odd shaped and hard to get on. The flip up cutter on the back seems a bit violent to get it opened. Feels like it might break easy if used often.RedPanda

I bought this model online during the Black Friday sales in November 2021. It was to replace my older model Series 7 which has been a fantastic shaver. Please be aware that the newer generation Series 7 like this one uses a separate precision trimmer head that is not built into the shaver. The precision trimmer is not included in this particular retail kit. And you cannot buy it separately in Australia unless you opt to purchase an entire beard trimming and manscaping kit. I don't have a beard. And I'm not into manscaping. So this shaver is incredibly useless in its current state. Normally I would not have made this error of judgement because I would have purchased in-store after inspecting it. But in-store purchase wasn't possible during COVID-19 lockdown. Shaver Shop referred me to Braun, who referred me to their spare parts distributor who was actually very helpful, but it seems I've bought a dud. I can't rate the product because I've frankly only used it once.Philby

I'll start by saying a lot of the reviews I've seen here have been discussing the fact that instructions aren't included and comments about the fact there is no heater/dryer in the base. First off there is literally only 1 button on the shaver and 1 button on the base (outside of the base ejection button for swapping the cleaning juice). If you struggle with this shaver then there are likely bigger problems in your life. This is very simple shaver that seriously needs no instructions. As for the base always launching the cleaning cycle when you only want to charge the shaver… the shaver battery lasts over an hour. My shaves take approximately 5 minutes. That means I could shave, without the need for charging, or cleaning the shaver 12 times. If after 12 shaves you still don't want to clean the shaver then I don't know what to tell you other than you might want to consider evaluating your hygiene habits. Also, the cleaning solution/juice if not used will evaporate, so you might as well use it. I run the cycle after about 3-4 shaves and the next day it's dry and ready to go. Now for the real review… I previously owned a 5 series Braun many years back and more recently owned a 9 series Braun about 3 years ago. I also have owned/tried Remington, Philips, Manscape, and Wahl shavers in the last 3 years so I have a lot of experience and by far this is better than every shaver I have tried, including the 9 series and I'll explain why. First off, my 9 series broke about 3 years ago only 4 months after purchasing it. The trimmer failed to run; the rest of the shaver still functioned. Anyway, I dealt with the customer service and found it lacking. I mailed the shaver off and after calls asking the status, they told me to be patient. 2 months later I moved, lost my USPS tracking receipt, and finally the Braun customer service acknowledged they didn't have the shaver and asking for shipping confirmation. I no longer had the receipt so I couldn't prove I mailed it. $300 down the drain. So, for the next few years I avoided Braun products. I tried many others and finally gave up and settled with disposable shavers. I seen this sale after all this time and decided to try this shaver/Braun again. The motor on this shaver is louder and more powerful than the 9 series I remember. The attachments are easy to swap and use. I found the lack of an in-built trimmer a little frustrating as it takes a bit of time to swap heads. A small sacrifice as the trimmer itself is leaps and bounds stronger than the 9 series in-built shaver and far easier and more precise to use. Now onto a more sensitive topic, trimming of more delicate parts of the body. My god, this shaver has blown me away and establishes its true value here. The included beard/stubble trimmer attachment, normally meant for beards, has been a godsend for that area and blows Manscape products out the water. Honestly Manscape products are far overrated, and I found before this shaver, a Wahl cordless shaver with the correct guide to be much better. The Stubble and Beard trimmer was better than every product I've ever tried, and I can easily say with confidence that there is absolutely nothing better. This was the first shave I ever had that didn't tear me to shreds and cause excessive bleeding there. The shave is also faster as the newfound confidence allows me to shave without worry of nicks. While I will say it did nick once, the nick was barely noticeable or felt and didn't bleed. A serious gamechanger. The included guides that were notches of 1, 2, or 3 were additions nice but a close trim is possible without worry with guide 1. Seriously, this attachment should be marketed completely differently as it's outstanding. I'm speaking again of the Beard and Stubble Trimmer with 2 notch 1 guides, not the Precision Trimmer attachment as I would be far too scared to use that attachment down there. Also, while the Beard and Stubble trimmer is attached you can still run the cleaning cycle when the shaver is inserted into the base! Honestly that was an amazing discovery as the ability of having that attachment cleaned by the base, especially after shaving in that area, was a huge win for hygiene. On to the real purpose of this shaver, your face… It does a great and thorough job but requires many passes. This shaver shines in giving this quality shave without pulling or nicks. It rivals disposable shaver shaves without the irritation. The requirement of some extra passes is worth it. The 9 series did provide a faster shave as it required fewer passes of the same area, but it did not provide a better shave. The difference being the 9 series is almost 2 – 2.5x as expensive and has a far worse trimmer, no beard and stubble trimmer which again shines where you would least expect it to and had suspect reliability. I have given this product 4 stars as the customer service, if you ever need it, is lacking and I’ll likely always have a chip on my shoulder towards Braun for simply makingAlan

I recently bought this machine and this is the first machine I've had with an associated charging/cleaning station. I have previously used Braun shavers for years, but these were not cleaned in this way. Then I wonder about this: The machine was delivered with 1 pc. Braun Clean & Renew, and according to the manual, the machine must be cleaned after each use. Then the contents of the cleaning station will last for approx. 30 days. If I don't clean every day the contents will evaporate within 8 weeks. This kind of fabric is very expensive to buy new, and I wonder if this type of cleaning is necessary. Online, it is also possible to buy a type of powder which, however, must be mixed with some type of ethanol. Then the price will be a fraction of the price for new containers. However, I have managed without such cleaning since I started with Braun shavers 50 years ago. However, according to the manual, I do not need to clean the machine in this way, but only rinse it clean under running water. What do I risk by maintaining the machine without using the cleaning station. Will it then have a limited lifespan? Will the machine have a longer life if I use a cleaning spray and shower my head after each cleaning under water?Ivar

My Braun Series 7 sideburn trimmer broke this past week when I replaced the head so I was able to compare the two head to head. Braun 7 with a new foil head versus Series 9 Pro. The 9 Pro was a major improvement to the already fine Series 7 with a new head. I was amazed at the major difference of closeness of the shave and how efficient it was in requiring fewer passes to get a close shave. The shave with the Series 9 Pro was every bit as close as shaving with my Merzur safety razor. The new head design design on the Series 9 is clearly better plus there is a new feature that works really well. The head can be locked in a fixed position or used in in a pivoting position. The instructions recommend the fixed head position for your neck and cheeks. While the pivoting head works well under your nose and on your chin. The pop up sideburn trimmer has been relocated to the rear of the shaver which is a much better location than on the front of the shaver. The new charging case is wonderful for traveling on extended trips. I am amazed at the dramatic improvement of the Braun Series 9 Pro over my previous Braun Series 7. The shaver is a beautiful example of high quality German Design, German Engineering, and German manufacturing. Yes it is made in Germany which I much prefer over Chinese mediocre manufacturing. I have always used a Phillips Norelco triple headed rotary shaver because I believed that it was the only thing short of a blade that could give me a clean shave with all the crazy directions my beard grows. The quality of the blades on my Norelco shavers have degraded badly over the years and I find myself grinding the razor against my face for 10 minutes trying to get a reasonable shave and having razor burn afterward. I also don't shave every day anymore and every day past day 1 I go, the worse the shaving experience got. This shaver is amazing! If I shave every day it takes me about 90 second to get a MUCH closer shave than my old shaver, and I even 3 days to test it out and after 3 days the save was just as close and only required a little more effort. I never believed a foil shave could work for me but I'm convinced now. The skin on my face is much happier, and I am too. Pros: Really close shave with minimal effort Very quick to get to that close shave Nice design and fits well in my hand Impressive cleaning/charging station (yet to really test it out) Cons: Its not loud but the sound is high pitched compared to my old shaver and a little uncomfortable VERY pricey, I hope its wicked durable like my Norelcos which each lasted over a decade with just blade replacements Not sure I would spend the extra $100 on the base station if I had the chance to buy it againScoR

This razor also shaves closer than any other electric razor I’ve tried before. If you are focused on the end result of super smooth skin post shaving, this is a great razor. The shaving head pivots to meet the contour of your face, and glides easily. I did not experience any roughness, scratchiness or other concerns – the razor heads glide smooth without irritation. Cons: Noise and vibration. As this design is a “side-to-side” trimmer, there is a lot more noise and vibration in the trimmer action than I am used to. It is not a defect, just something to be aware. It wasn’t a problem for me most weekends, but during the weekdays it did wake up my wife as I was getting ready for work. Also, while the razor is Li-Ion and can be used cordlessly most of the time, I found it unfortunate that razor does not work WHILE PLUGGED IN as well. I had one similar to this two years ago and loved it so I had to get another! It grabbed those stubbles in private areas that a regular razor can’t! The only negative things I have to say is it sometimes it pinches. If you have longer hair that gets into the foil part it pulls and the side blades hurt a little(can cut your sensitive bits)Adriane

By far the worst electric razor I’ve ever used (and I’ve been through several!). You think the pencil-thin $8.50 bikini / fine hair trimmer is rough? Wait until you get yanked, tugged, and scraped by this monstrosity while still keeping 75% of the hair you go over. Waste of money and will be going straight in the trash. Just get Walmart’s cheapest bikini / facial hair trimmer, instead of this torture device.Elizabeth

Pros – Excellent razor. Closest shave I have ever had. Fast and easy shave due to excellent blades. Cons – Requires a bit of maintenance. You need to run the “cleaning program” every day (personally I do it every other day). Some water and a cleaning solution shoots up into the case and cleans the razor once activated (1 pack of solution is provided for one month – available on Amazon sold as a pack for a reasonable price). This seemed like a bit of a pain at first, especially changing the solution every month, but the razor looks brand new and is working like it was just out of box many months later, so I think it’s worth it. Note – the first ten minutes of the cleaning process are VERY NOISY. The last 60 or so of the drying process aren’t too bad. Don’t expect to clean this razor before you head off to work if your partner is within 25 yards. It’s like waking up to someone vacuuming your pillow.Kayak4

The Panasonic Arc 5 Wet/Dry Electric Shaver with Self-cleaning recharger is outstanding. I've used safety razors for years and decided to try and electric. The Panasonic was the best choice!! If you've been using blades it takes around a month for your face to adapt to an electric but after that time using the electric is great!! Especially with the Self-cleaning recharger. It keeps your razor clean and charged so you always get a great shave. Be sure you read all the instructions so you can get the most from your razor.Steve

I have been using this shaver for 2 years now primarily for bald head shaving. I have also found it very useful for neck shaving since I have a heard. The pop up trimmer is very sharp and precise. I use the pop up trimmer just above my top lip to straighten out my beard. This pop up trimmer is my go-to for precise trimmer when I need it as it is sharper than my other beard trimmers. This trimmer is very powerful, long battery life and my favourite part is the cleaning station. All you have to do after a shave is use a brush to remove the hair from the cutting blades, then drop it in the cleaning station and walk away… Excellent. I had a problem with the cleaning station and I was near the 2 year exchange warranty. I highly recommend contacting panasonic directly for this. I contacted best buy and they maintained it's only a 1 year warranty. It is NOT, it's definitely a 2 year warranty. They just shipped me a brand new replacement unit. Awesome!!Anonymous

I bought this shaver about a month ago after my Braun shaver quit on me after two years. I've had Norelco's in the past as did my dad. There was a comment made by one person that he didn't like this shaver because he felt the motor wasn't fast enough. I found this to be true however the motor is quiet and there are three cutting head with a lot of blades. Thinking logically, if the motor was any faster, there's a good chance that the blades would miss some hairs. Of all the Norelco's I've had in the past, this one is the best. The main shaver head along with the 3 cutting heads give a very close shave and conforms to your face, jawline and Adam's apple where my old Braun didn't. I use Williams Electric Shave for lubrication and have yet to have any razor burn. For cleaning, pop open the shaver head and rinse with warm water. There are three indicator lights which tell you when the shaver is fully charged and when it'll need to be charged up again. For $60.00, this shaver at least for me is worth every penny.Dakasis

The shaver does a good job, I have had bad experiences with electric shavers in the past where the blades have pulled on my facial hair and it hurts that even before I would shave I would use the back razer to shorten my facial hair so I could shave my face or I would just use the back razer to shave completely. with this electric shaver, I can get a good shave without the blades pulling on my facial hair. there is a lot of confusion on what I can use with the shaver, like Lectric Shave or can I use shaving cream, the user manual doesn't give enough instructions. it's great that it comes with a case for the shaver and the charger, but the shaver is difficult to fully clean out like dumping out all the hairs that the shaver collects, also you are only recommended one accessory, and that accessory is no longer available and it's an important product because it's used to clean the head of the shaver.Hunter11

I found that my new shaver does a credible job. I enjoy the fact that it's waterproof and can be washed after use. However, it was supposed to show a warning light when the battery became low, and it didn't do that, and I was caught one morning not being able to shave because the battery needed recharging. I've been using a Norelco shaver for more than 20 years (Model #6843XL) even after the battery could no longer be charged by plugging it in until even plugging it in would no longer work. So being 94 years old, I assume that this will be my last shaver I'll have to buy if this one is as good as my last one.Maftir

Nothing worse than a company praying you don’t read the smaller text. I was unfortunate enough to buy in store to find out that the 100% waterproof is only for cleaning. Very annoying- but maybe passable if its use was good? Absolutely not. Took forever to get anything off my face which a normal razor could have done 3 times over in the time I tried to use this- and my face still isn’t properly shaven. I’d get a refund but I didn’t realize how truly bad this product would be Stick to shaving normally if possible or buy a better razor thats TRULY WATERPROOF if thats what you’re looking forCyrus

This is my first experience with a Braun razor. I wear a beard, but still need to keep my neck & cheeks nice and neat. I shaved with a hand razor for years, it was fine. I was interested in a foil razor, but wasn't sure if I'd be able to keep my definition lines on my face without destroying them. However, a friend of mine who also sports a beard has used a Braun for years, no issues. For the price I paid for this razor, I thought I'd try. Not sure why this little razor isn't getting more love, maybe people just don't know how to shave. It works darn good. I can shave closer & faster than I can with a blade, no irritation, and it does not destroy my beard lines. I can't imagine how good your expensive models shave, this little guy works well. Only wish I could use with a cord, but that's not a deal breaker. Don't ignore this razor!mike6000

There was nothing at all to dislike about this product. I found it to be an amazing piece of machinery. You see I have Parkinson's disease. It eventually became impossible for me to use standard blade razor because I could not twist my wrist to the angles needed to save the contours of my face at the jawline on the sides of my face. This razor is lightweight definitely waterproof and easily glides over all the contours of my face with its pivoting blades. Or I also like to point out that it was easy for me to hold because of the texture of the outside casing of the razor itself you see I have no strength in my hands either. I promise that this razor gives just as close a shave as a standard triple Blade razor.Philip

Been shaving for 45 years, and mostly with Panasonic shavers. They are by far the best shavers made. I have 4 Panasonics in my collection right now… the ES8249, ES-LF51 ES-LA93 and the new ES-LV97. Whats nice about Panasonic is that the charger/cleaning station can be used interchangeable with almost any of it models in a pinch. I've used Braun, Reminington and most the top brands and Panasonic is the best, IMHO. The Braun had an annoying vibration to it and not as smooth as the Panasonics. My current shaver is a ES LA93 which is very good but only has 3 blades The ES-VS97 in new and improved, and I mean that literally. The 5 blade head are smooth and soft, and cut with less swipes than the ones with 3 blades. The pop up trimmer is a big improvement over older models, as it locks in place moving in either direction. Lastly, cosmetically it is much nicer looking with a matte black finish.cgnaked

I’m switching to this electric Panasonic Arc5 razor after having used another brand’s wet/dry electric razor for the past 13 years. The Arc5 razor is lightweight, and the matte black plastic doesn’t look or feel very premium, however, a silver/chrome model is also available and the warranty is 2 years. This razor performs very nicely and gives me a close shave both when using dry and wet with shaving cream. I very rarely have to make more than one pass over the same patch of skin, though I find that when shaving dry it’s easier to pull the skin taught to raise the hairs since I don’t have to work over the shaving cream. The first time I used the razor I did experience a bit of razor burn and irritation, especially around the Adam’s apple; the manual suggests that it could take up to 30 days of regular use for your skin to acclimate to the new shaver. That, plus I haven’t clean shaven properly in weeks as growing out your beard has become quite trendy during the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, I did use the trimmers first to trim my facial hair down to stubble before shaving and was impressed with the efficiency and smoothness of the pop up trimmers; they didn’t catch, pull, or snag once, which my old electric razor used to do constantly. If you like the stubble or 5 o’clock shadow look, you could probably even stop there. The LCD is bright and easy to read, but it really only gives you information about the remaining battery life and whether or not it is set to the “cleaning” mode. The charging cable connector is uniquely shaped, so if you lose it or it breaks, you’ll need to get a model/series specific replacement cable. It lasts about 2 weeks on a full charge (1 hour) if your daily shave averages about 3 minutes. While the unit I have did not come with a charging base, there are contacts on back of the handle for automatic charging when the razor is placed into a charging base. What I did find interesting about this razor is its beard density sensor which changes the motor speed based on the density/coarseness of the section of beard it is trimming. You can hear the motor sound change as it encounters thinner or thicker patches of hair, which works well on my uneven and patchy beard growth. The razor also has a cleaning cycle and comes with blade oil to maintain the blade sharpness and a brush to clean out any shavings. The top pops off easily for cleaning, and the foils and blades are simple to remove and replace when needed. The unit did come with a leatherette carry case and a plastic protective cap for travel. My beard may be a bit different than the avg. guy’s beard. I’m not a hairy guy, & I don’t have a thick, coarse, stubbly beard. If I don’t shave during the work week, I won't end up with a stylish 5 o’clock shadow until Friday afternoon–a look that a lot of other guys can achieve in just 1 day. But even with my soft, thin facial hair, this electric razor doesn’t offer the close shave I’d hoped for. In fact, the number of passes I’m forced to make over my face & neck to obtain a clean, whiskerless mug is both annoying & time-consuming. So, despite my slow-growing beard, if I don’t shave at least 2-to-3 times/week w/this electric razor, then I’m forced to revert to a disposable razor for a clean shave. In addition, I found that the shaver’s large head makes it a bit unwieldy & difficult to obtain a close shave in the area just beneath my nose. Whether shaving wet or dry & regardless of technique (going against the grain, stretching the skin, toggling the shaver head between the “free” & “lock” positions, utilizing the pop-up trimmer, etc.), I also found it difficult to get a clean shave under my jaw line, below my sideburns. I experienced similar difficulty in shaving the tiny hairs in the lower neck/throat area on either side of my Adam’s apple. Although some may prefer to utilize the razor’s wet shave capability, I don’t like to shave in the shower. Although I did try the wet shave option, it didn’t cut any better than the dry shave. So, after 2 tries at wet shaving, I went back to traditional dry shaving. As for the suggested shaving cream option, I don’t use shaving cream with an electric razor. For me, the whole pt. of an electric razor is convenience & time savings vs. dealing w/the hassles of a manual razor (running hot water, applying/removing shaving cream/gel, & cauterizing bloody nicks, etc.). Simply put: an electric shaver should provide a QUICK, safe, close shave without all the mess & fuss. Although a 2-yr. mfr.’s limited warranty sounds impressive vs. the industry std., a quick check revealed that the common recommended replacement parts (new blades & foils) aren’t inexpensive. So, I doubt I’ll be able to justify the expense of regular maintenance w/this razor (apart from routine cleaning). Instead, I’ll probably elect to put those funds towards the cost of a new shaver. Furthermore, the lithium ion battery life is just 3 yrs., & it isn’t intended to be replaced by the consumer. In some ways, this shaver could almost be considered an expensive disposable razor. On a minor note, the black travel case/pouch feels like cheap vinyl without any real padding or cushioning to fully protect the hardware & sensitive electronics. Overall, I'm a bit underwhelmed & disappointed, as I expected greater performance—namely, a closer, quicker shave—from a premium electric shaver at this price point.CriticalEye

Another great rotary in Philips' lineup. This series does solve the issue of many complaints regarding the detachable trimmer and heads of other Philips shavers – it has the traditional flip-top head and pop-up trimmer. This adds to the bulk of the shaver, body and head, but precludes having to keep track of a separate trimmer and remove the head for cleaning, and it works reasonably well, although for me the trimmer isn't quite as effective as the SmartClick attachments for the Series 9000 shavers. The ComfortGlide Rings really are effective, and provide a frictionless shave, although in this model they are slightly larger than the Anti-Friction rings of the S7940 for example, and require some maneuvering to get around tight areas. The Quick Clean pods use the same cleaning solution as the SmartClean cartridges for the SmartClean stations, which is excellent for cleaning and lubricating the shaver. The Quick Clean Pod is unpowered however, and uses the shaver's power, reducing it by about 1 percent per cleaning, although on a positive note doesn't require cords or cables and is more compact – actually usable for travel. The GroomTribe app is the Achilles Heel of all these Bluetooth shavers, and in particular this model (S7782), because there's no information regarding this particular shaver – the app seems exclusively to recognize only the S7940 shaver. On the plus side, the S7782 will connect, and it does record the shaving time and the percentage of rotation (which improves shaving efficiency), although the motion sensor algorithm in the shaver appears not to recognize the correct rotational movement about half the time. The good news is you don't actually need the app, and this shaver has an LED screen that provides all the essential information about the shaver, including battery life, cleaning information and the previously mentioned inaccurate rotation statistics. The shaving heads (SH71/52) only have a single cutting ring, but actually are comfortable and provide a very close shave. Overall, an excellent rotary from Philips, that provides a close, comfortable shave, warts and all, with the potential to improve with software updates to the app. Recommended.S7782

The Norelco S7000 is a very great shaver and I do recommend this electric shaver to all men especially men with sensitive skin which I have and I’m 50 years old and I have been searching for a shaver electric or not and it will not make my neck red or razor bumps. The reason why I’m giving my purchase review is because it came with a defective battery it won’t hold a charge for that long as Norelco says that it should. So I contacted the manufacture and told them of this and they mailed me a replacement shaver of the same type and the replacement does hold a charge unlike the first one that I bought. And if you have sensitive scan on your neck and when you shave you get a red neck from a razor and bumps then you really need to buy either the S7000 or the S9000 cause I can shave dry and I get awesome results and no redness or bumps and you would want to get the electric Norelco shaver that you can clean it using a cleaning pod. I will never go back to razor’s ever again and when I have wore it out I will buy another one. I did buy the S9000 because it comes with double the blades but either electric shaver will give you a very smooth clean shave.Baylein

I grew up with and have used Norelco rotary shavers and body groom tools all my adult life. My old one, probably close to 20 years now, still works but there is no availability of replacement heads anymore and some wear finally. This is an excellent shaver and I am very happy I got it. I considered the 3000 and 5000 series, but 3000 seems to use lower end heads, and while the 5000 uses the same as this, the hard travel case is essential to me and purchased as a separate accessory brings the cost close enough that it was worth it to just get the higher end kit. The shave is great; I haven't yet tried out the cleaning pod. The shaver cleans very well under running water following the instructions. I also have some extras from my previous Philips/Norelco products that I use with this, such as combs, cleaning brushes and a spare charger.Chris_P

I've tried many of these head shavers over the last few years with various results. The Pitbull has been the best of them by far and for a few reasons. First, the overall performance. I shave my head every fourth day and have always had issues with these electric razors not being able to pick up the hair on the very back of my head, where it still grows in relatively thick. The Pitbull doesn't seem to struggle nearly as much to actually pick up and cut the hair there. Second – Ease of cleaning. Because the whole blade assembly pops off, it makes it very easy to rinse out the heads. Others i've tried that only flip open and don't easily detach are much more difficult to clean. The worst offender of this was the Freedom grooming razor. That one had 4 separate heads to open and then a center head that is supposed to unlock and open but the whole cleaning process took almost as long as the shave. Third: Hair storage. There is plenty of space under the blades to shave your entire head, even with four days of growth, without needing to stop and empty it. Others i've tried didn't seem to take this into account… again with Freedom Grooming being the worst offender with only a tiny ring of space for hair under each head. I don't want to stop halfway through to clean out the hair. Finally, overall build quality and ergonomics seem spot on. I also like that you can see what percentage of battery you have left instead of just an led light. Overall, this was more than I wanted to spend on a head shaver, but at the end of the day, when it's a product you're going to use hundreds if not thousands of times, it's worth the cost to get something that performs well.Kyle B.

Honest and truly I've been shaving my head with a razor like a knub for the past 2 years dealing with razor burn every two days having my whole head look like I just got attacked by a swarm of angry Hornets. I brush my teeth and shave my head every morning. It takes me less time to shave my head than it does to brush my teeth. Extremely easy to maintain. Multiple shaving heads available unlike other brands. Super super easy to clean. And the best part you don't have to worry about some flesh eating bacteria that's living on your razor blade entering your body from a tiniest Little knick that will eat half of the skin off your head. And along those lines you don't have to worry about slipping wrong position of the blade. Just rub this skull conforming device around your head for just a few seconds and you're good to go. And the cool thing is at the end of the day when you got a little 5:00 shadow on your head going on and makes you look a little bit more rugged and that much more dashing and handsome. That and if you have one of those type of girlfriend or boyfriend you can let them have fun shaving your head too without fear that they're going to mess you up something fierce. It’s awesome. I accepted my inevitable baldness two years ago but never out thought into how to truly shave my head—-like many, I just used my cheap electric razor…which I thought worked fine, until I discovered this amazing tool! I shave my head in like three minutes instead of fifteen, and there’s zero hair on the floor/bathtub after because this thing catches all the hair. Best of all, my head is incredibly smooth—like honestly, I had no idea my head could feel so smooth. I used to have little cuts and flakes on my head but this thing smoothed them all out. There’s no flakes, no hair, just smooth bald skin. It doesn’t hurt my head at all. However, I’ve been disappointed by how it irritates my neck. I have very sensitive skin below my chin and each time I’ve used this shaver there, it results in red scarred skin and razor burn/bumps that hurt. Never on my head, just the neck. I may later buy the blade they sell for sensitive skin to try that (I really wish that could have just come standard with the shaver, like I wish I could choose blades instead of only having one option). But until then, I can’t use this below my chin since it breaks out in red bumps and pain—even when I use shaving cream. But that’s only 5% of my shaving need. The other 95%, my head, is shaved masterfully and quickly and painlessly by this shaver. It’s so quick! Loving it. I own two other Norelco shavers, a two year old S7940 and a twelve year old 9160 XL. Both of these were the top-of-the-line model when purchased and have given me flawless service. See my photo comparisons of these three shavers. Norelco currently offers two core designs in its shavers. The more expensive 5000/7000/9000 series are slimmer and have a “mushroom” head which sit above the body of the shaver and thus have more flexibility to conform to your face. The other design is seen in the more basic and economical 1000/2000/3000 series which have a flatter head design. Like all Norelco shavers the S3134 is elegantly styled and very ergonomic. It is a nice combination of steel blue and black. It is lightweight, but feels substantial in your hand. There is rubberized grip material where your index finger and thumb would grasp the shaver and your remaining three fingers cradle the sides of the shaver’s body. It is a bit longer than my 9160 Norelco and a bit lighter. Compared to the 7940 it is wider and slightly heavier. On the front of the shaver is the power button and a single LCD icon which lights when charging or to indicate (in orange) that the battery life is low. The reason I added this shaver to my collection is that I have the feeling that my trusty 9160 is nearing retirement age. However, the chance of developing an ingrown hair is greater with the 7940 model since its 72 total blades cut very closely compared to the 27 more widely spaced blades of the 3134 model. If you have a tendency to develop razor bumps on your skin you may find that the 3134 is a better choice. The battery life on this shaver is actually much greater than the 50 minutes claimed by Norelco. I tested it by running it continuously from a fully-charged state and it lasted 121 minutes! Now it should be noted that this was not actual shaving time, so I estimate that actual shaving time would be about 100+ minutes. Recharge time from a fully-discharged state was 68 minutes. Other notes about the charging system: The orange low-charge warning light activated with 5.5 minutes of running time remaining. A five minute quick charge gave 9.5 minutes of shaving time. This is my second Norelco electric shaver that I have owned in the last 3 years and there is a considerable improvement from my old one. Let's start with the charging time. All you need is 1 hour of charging time for 60 minutes of shaving time. I easily get 3 good shaves out of 1 charge! The shaver also comes with a nice little charge indicator to let you know how much juice the shaver has left. The next thing you will notice is how easy it is to grip this Norelco. The stem is wrapped with a nice anti-slip rubber that makes handling much easier. Once you are ready to start shaving, I really like how I have the option of either having a dry or wet shave. If I am needing a quick clean up, then I go dry, but if I want a closer shave, I always use shaving foam. I have really sensitive skin, so I really appreciate the pivot and flex heads on this Philips Norelco. Not only do they provide a clean shave, but it doesn't irritate my face. I really like how well it shaves my face and neck, but the only reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because doesn't do that good of a job right underneath my jaw line. Another plus of this Norelco, is how easy it is to clean it. All you have to do is flip open the shaver head and rinse with water. On the back side of the shaver you will find the pop up trimmer, which is usefull, but it takes a while to get used to using on your sideburns, as I found it a little awkward to handle on my face. Overall, I would recommend this Philips Norelco shaver because it does a good job of getting you a clean shave without irritating your skin, especially in this price range.Longhorn74

I figured I would try this out because I want something convenient and economical. In-grown hairs drive me crazy and this shaver is supposed to help. They say it takes about three weeks to see the effects of using the new shaver. So far, I feel like it is improving a lot of my facial hair, but some stragglers are being stubborn and don’t want to change (at least yet). Each day, the shaver does an amazing job on the majority of my hair. However, it does not seem to be able to lift up hairs laying completely flat against my skin. No matter how many times I go over them and no matter what angle, those hairs get missed. I have to go back and touch up with a regular razor, which gets them without a problem. The hope is after a few more weeks of “training” the stubborn hairs, the beard as a whole will grow in the appropriate direction for the shaver. For longer hair like sideburn touch ups, there is a pop-up trimmer ready to keep them looking good in between haircuts. Having a straight trimmer for them is so much easier than using a razor or scissors. The shaver itself is simple to use. The battery lasts one hour and takes one hour to charge. I have not needed to charge it yet because shaving with it is fast. Cleanup is simple! One push of a button flips the blades up for easy rinsing and drying. The fact that this is suitable for wet or dry is huge for me! I prefer a wet shave and, even if someone likes a dry shave, it just makes life easier knowing this thing can get wet. Overall, I am happy with this shaver. It is the first electric shaver I have had in about twenty years, and they have come a long way. Waterproofing and much better batteries make this so much more convenient than what I used to have.Tony

After switching to a foil shaver (Braun 700 series) a half-year ago, I got fed up with the perpetual stubble and fine hairs it left on my face. So, today I gave in and bought this Norelco 5100 series (I'd been a Norelco user for decades before the Braun purchase). It only took the first shave after charging and my face was smooth again. I guess my face must be made for the rotary heads, because the foil shaver just didn't cut it for me. This shaver will also allow me to remove and clean the individual heads, something my last Norelco would not let me do (greatly reducing the effective life of the blades, which would eventually clog up no matter how good you were about trying to clean them). I can't speak to how well this shaver is going to hold up, since it's only Day One, but my experience with Norelco in the past has been a good one.LarryB

I have had previous Norelco units just like this. So i trusted the brand and the model here. I have never been so disappointed in one of these as I am today. The blade assembly at the top always felt mechanically sound and made of good material. The 5100 Series however seems of lesser quality it is bulky and the sound of the plastic can be heard as you use it. I would never try and use this with anything other than a dry surface. This qualtiy is too cheap to deal with the issue of water seeping in and clogging up with the shavings inside. 2 weeks into using the 5100 the blue plastic holding in the blade fell out. This little blue ring is the mechanical connection holding the blade in place. Why this wasn't built into the assembly with a stronger, studier frame is beyond me. Something QA should pick up on. So now I have to place it back with delicate care each time as I had taken the time to read through and line up exactly how it needed to be. The issue here being is that these don't seem to be able to be held up through regular cleaning to try and protect the life of the unit by clogging up the blades. Overall did it do the job when it was working at full capacity? Kind of. The bulkiness and placement of the blades make it awkward to get a clean consistent shave. Would I recommend this to others? Never.DN

So far it seems okay. The cutting is better than panasonic but not as good as wahl. I prefer a T-blade for a quicker trim. I'm happy with the settings as I like to adjust beard length as this does go all the way to 20mm (I'd prefer 25mm). The longer clip attachment has unnecessarily sharp edges; I don't know why they didn't make it like the shorter clip, and clips seem delicate. I wish philips provided a better case, or at least sold one as an extra. The body seems unnecessarily large/long when compared to other trimmers.Blurgh

This is a great, Great Razor!!! It must be charged for the night or a few hours when you first get it though. You don't need to leave it plugged in though. Once it has been charged fully, you will have several days worth of power. It is very quiet, it gives a really close shave and it is really smooth on the face. In addition, it is very simple to clean. You can removed the guard and it reveals the blades of the razor. You just run some water over the blades and it removes the hair clippings.bj987keller

The Good: Great feel, grip, shave, ease of cleaning, quick charge time, trimmer is handy for sideburns to shape them up between haircuts. The Bad: I have now gone through two of these in about 2 years….the first lasted about 18 mos, the second, about 5. Problem? For whatever reason, after awhile, it will not charge. I also use shaving cream when I get out of the shower and use the razor, rinse it before, during and after use….and always and I mean always, after the period of time, you get up, plug it in, go in the shower, come out, dead. It won't charge. My guess? The Lithium Ion Batts. While ALL batteries have a lifespan, they should be much longer thant this. I rinse the head during shaving (shaving cream buildup and hair) 2-3 times while shaving paying attention to let the water drain down 90-95%….I don't think it's water intrusion….as deep as this thing goes is running it under the faucet head down? I used both the old and new charger….the new one shows all power lights on for about 2-3 seconds, goes dim, dead……there is something about these batteries that are not right….I am off to Walmart this mornign to get a 3rd in less than 3 years THIS time WITH the cheap warranty…..I have used Brauns for over 30 years and the batteries always seem to be the issue…do NOT pack them in luggage that will go in the cargo hold or you will find them dead, not chargeable when you get to your destination…this one is ONLY used at home. I take a cheap corded Braun on the road and it's about 20 years old now, still works but it's a dry shave…irritating…….I like the ability to use shaving cream for a much more comfortable shave but, this battery thing is aggravating…..over the 30 years I have gone through multiple 3, 5, 7 and 9 series razors…they ALL have battery failures eventually…so you end up buying a new one…..why? Because the other brands suck MORE. I have had Remington, Norelco (couldn't shave close with a gun to it's head), Chinese knockoffs even a small cordless from Harbor Freight that despite is size and slow speed delivered a great shave until it quit working…..it seems that if a rechargeable battery is run for 20 mins a day max, 6-7 days a week, it SHOULD last more than 6 months….never dropped, never abused, always left open on the counter after rinsing to let the head and razor dry after separated….still died….ridiculous…..I only hope the warranty is worth something when the next one croaks….no warning either….just dies…..still the best brand overall….Terry

I've never really liked wet dry shavers but this one changed my mind. it shaves flawless and leaves you face as smooth as using a traditional razor. i love that it's wireless and it charges very quickly and stays charged for a great amount of time. and cleaning is a breeze with the included brush and removable heads. you can also remove the head and run it under water for a deep clean. all around this is and excellent shaver.James

I bought this model online during the Black Friday sales in November 2021. It was to replace my older model Series 7 which has been a fantastic shaver. Please be aware that the newer generation Series 7 like this one uses a separate precision trimmer head that is not built into the shaver. The precision trimmer is not included in this particular retail kit. And you cannot buy it separately in Australia unless you opt to purchase an entire beard trimming and manscaping kit. I don't have a beard. And I'm not into manscaping. So this shaver is incredibly useless in its current state. Normally I would not have made this error of judgement because I would have purchased in-store after inspecting it. But in-store purchase wasn't possible during COVID-19 lockdown. Shaver Shop referred me to Braun, who referred me to their spare parts distributor who was actually very helpful, but it seems I've bought a dud. I can't rate the product because I've frankly only used it once.Philby

I'll start by saying a lot of the reviews I've seen here have been discussing the fact that instructions aren't included and comments about the fact there is no heater/dryer in the base. First off there is literally only 1 button on the shaver and 1 button on the base (outside of the base ejection button for swapping the cleaning juice). If you struggle with this shaver then there are likely bigger problems in your life. This is very simple shaver that seriously needs no instructions. As for the base always launching the cleaning cycle when you only want to charge the shaver… the shaver battery lasts over an hour. My shaves take approximately 5 minutes. That means I could shave, without the need for charging, or cleaning the shaver 12 times. If after 12 shaves you still don't want to clean the shaver then I don't know what to tell you other than you might want to consider evaluating your hygiene habits. Also, the cleaning solution/juice if not used will evaporate, so you might as well use it. I run the cycle after about 3-4 shaves and the next day it's dry and ready to go. Now for the real review… I previously owned a 5 series Braun many years back and more recently owned a 9 series Braun about 3 years ago. I also have owned/tried Remington, Philips, Manscape, and Wahl shavers in the last 3 years so I have a lot of experience and by far this is better than every shaver I have tried, including the 9 series and I'll explain why. First off, my 9 series broke about 3 years ago only 4 months after purchasing it. The trimmer failed to run; the rest of the shaver still functioned. Anyway, I dealt with the customer service and found it lacking. I mailed the shaver off and after calls asking the status, they told me to be patient. 2 months later I moved, lost my USPS tracking receipt, and finally the Braun customer service acknowledged they didn't have the shaver and asking for shipping confirmation. I no longer had the receipt so I couldn't prove I mailed it. $300 down the drain. So, for the next few years I avoided Braun products. I tried many others and finally gave up and settled with disposable shavers. I seen this sale after all this time and decided to try this shaver/Braun again. The motor on this shaver is louder and more powerful than the 9 series I remember. The attachments are easy to swap and use. I found the lack of an in-built trimmer a little frustrating as it takes a bit of time to swap heads. A small sacrifice as the trimmer itself is leaps and bounds stronger than the 9 series in-built shaver and far easier and more precise to use. Now onto a more sensitive topic, trimming of more delicate parts of the body. My god, this shaver has blown me away and establishes its true value here. The included beard/stubble trimmer attachment, normally meant for beards, has been a godsend for that area and blows Manscape products out the water. Honestly Manscape products are far overrated, and I found before this shaver, a Wahl cordless shaver with the correct guide to be much better. The Stubble and Beard trimmer was better than every product I've ever tried, and I can easily say with confidence that there is absolutely nothing better. This was the first shave I ever had that didn't tear me to shreds and cause excessive bleeding there. The shave is also faster as the newfound confidence allows me to shave without worry of nicks. While I will say it did nick once, the nick was barely noticeable or felt and didn't bleed. A serious gamechanger. The included guides that were notches of 1, 2, or 3 were additions nice but a close trim is possible without worry with guide 1. Seriously, this attachment should be marketed completely differently as it's outstanding. I'm speaking again of the Beard and Stubble Trimmer with 2 notch 1 guides, not the Precision Trimmer attachment as I would be far too scared to use that attachment down there. Also, while the Beard and Stubble trimmer is attached you can still run the cleaning cycle when the shaver is inserted into the base! Honestly that was an amazing discovery as the ability of having that attachment cleaned by the base, especially after shaving in that area, was a huge win for hygiene. On to the real purpose of this shaver, your face… It does a great and thorough job but requires many passes. This shaver shines in giving this quality shave without pulling or nicks. It rivals disposable shaver shaves without the irritation. The requirement of some extra passes is worth it. The 9 series did provide a faster shave as it required fewer passes of the same area, but it did not provide a better shave. The difference being the 9 series is almost 2 – 2.5x as expensive and has a far worse trimmer, no beard and stubble trimmer which again shines where you would least expect it to and had suspect reliability. I have given this product 4 stars as the customer service, if you ever need it, is lacking and I’ll likely always have a chip on my shoulder towards Braun for simply makingAlan

I recently bought this machine and this is the first machine I've had with an associated charging/cleaning station. I have previously used Braun shavers for years, but these were not cleaned in this way. Then I wonder about this: The machine was delivered with 1 pc. Braun Clean & Renew, and according to the manual, the machine must be cleaned after each use. Then the contents of the cleaning station will last for approx. 30 days. If I don't clean every day the contents will evaporate within 8 weeks. This kind of fabric is very expensive to buy new, and I wonder if this type of cleaning is necessary. Online, it is also possible to buy a type of powder which, however, must be mixed with some type of ethanol. Then the price will be a fraction of the price for new containers. However, I have managed without such cleaning since I started with Braun shavers 50 years ago. However, according to the manual, I do not need to clean the machine in this way, but only rinse it clean under running water. What do I risk by maintaining the machine without using the cleaning station. Will it then have a limited lifespan? Will the machine have a longer life if I use a cleaning spray and shower my head after each cleaning under water?Ivar
