Best Electric Sander For Wood (2025 Update)

It's very smooth in it's finish and in it's running. Hardly any vibration. Hours means almost no hand fatigue. This is not a round belt sander. It's not made as an all-'round random orbit. It's for finishing and does a great job of that.claritydw

Just used this sander on a custom nightstand/bookshelf project. First task was to remove the stain from a piece of butcher block. It took a bit of work even with 80 grit pads but eventually got the job done. I did find, if too much down pressure was applied the sander would bounce a little even at it's highest speed. Just took a little trial and error to figure how much pressure to apply. In the end, the sander is easy to handle with one hand and seems to sand quite evenly. As for the dust take up. That leaves something to be desired. It does contain the dust but after a bit of use, I think the filter begins to clog and becomes less and less effective. I didn't try to vacuum adapter but may go that route for any bigger project. Otherwise, it will take a lot of periodic filter cleanings. All and all, I'm glad I went with the Bosch for my random orbit sanding needs.Justin M.

If you don't mind a reconditioned sander this is the one. It's enough of a price difference for me, it's as good as a new one in my opinion. I'm a cabinet maker for 25 yr now and have always used air da's. It gets 4 stars because they stand to tall and aren't nearly as easy to hold and control, but that's with any electric I've seen. I was leaning towards the porter Cable, but glad I seen this. For home projects it's ideal and the dust bag does work. Anything helps when you're sanding indoors.jczo-84

Purchased this sander over a year again. I have used the sander 3 times since and not always with the Extension piece on. While using to detail wooden shutters, the extension attachment piece broke off. After further investigation, I realized that the plastic had completely melted causing one of the plastic tabs to snap off. The plastic was also melted where the screw is located an order to switch out attachments. I would have Initially reviewed this sander as 4 stars. But after only using this sander less than a handful of times, I have to give it a 2.Lauren T

The issue with this sander is the design of the dust collection system. It connects so poorly that you can't sand without it falling off. The vibration of the sander shakes it off. Mine was not broken. It was brand new, the first time use. But the dust collector would not latch well enough to keep it in place when the sander was running. I fiddled with it for probably an hour, figuring out the system and trying to make it work. I couldn't. You can't hold it in place while it is operating due to its size. Within minutes – it simply shakes off. After screwing with it for too long, I just used it for the corners I needed without the filter, which left me a mess to clean up and a snoot full of dust. Really frustration. The quality of the product is well beneath Black and Decker. They should be ashamed.Ryan

I would have given this a 5 because it worked really well….until it didn't. I was using it to sand a coffee table to repaint. On the 2nd use of it – halfway through the whole head (the black part at the bottom of the orange part that holds the sand paper) just started to fall right off. Something in that must have snapped because there is no way I can put it back together. So, it was a great little sander, fit in the hand well, got the job (1/2 done) with minimal effort but sadly because it broke I can't give it more than a 2. I'm hoping the store will take it back as I didn't keep the box.Grace

July 26,2021 after preparing wood stock for project I got out my brand new sander with a great DeWalt enthusiasm, which lasted about 3 minutes when the sanding disc flew off !!! I vacummed the pad and the back of the sanding disc. Nope. I the tried a new sanding disc. Lasted a minute and it flew off ! Everything else about this tool was 100 per cent. Tried contacting support by email and it was undeliverable. No helpful human contact, it seems, if you have a problem. Very disappointed. Research says the pad is worn out, so replace it. How can a brand new pad be worn out? Thank goodness I have 90 days to return it if not 100 per cent satisfied. My question is how could a brand name like DeWalt not rectify a problem like this before putting it out in the marketplace. I bought the DeWalt 8 1/4" jobsite compact table saw last year and it's a super tool. A sander is a useless tool if doesn't hold a sanding disc.trupar

This sander sands very well, and that is not an issue. There is no way to predict durability after a few hours of use, but this sander does not appear to be as well built as the DW423, an earlier model. What I take exception to are the following downgrades to usability compared to the DW423 orbital sander: The cord is at least a couple of feet shorter than the DW423 cord. No hard case. Instead you get a bag. The sander won't sit flat for a disc change when turned over. The flat top is gone on this model. Now you need a third hand to hold the sander while you change the disc. The dust port has no way to attach a hose, unlike the DW423 which comes with built-in hose connectors. You will have to buy an expensive adapter (at about $20) to attach a vacuum hose, and another adapter (at about $12) from the vacuum hose to the adapter. Not having a hose adapter, I had to make do with a vacuum hose that kind of stayed in place but often came loose. Maybe that's why I had a LOT more dust everywhere. After I get an adapter and try sanding some more I'll see if the problem was the hose or the sander not doing a very good job of collecting dust. Finally, there is NO way to identify exactly WHICH adapter fits this sander. No info in user manual or on this website.epossum

I really like this orbit sander. I've been using it for about 5 years now and it is still going just as strong as ever with no issues. The size is great – I have somewhat smaller hands for a man and have no problems using it. Vibration is minimal so it is comfortable to use for longer periods of time. Hook and loop system hasn't worn a bit. Overall, this tool does exactly what it's supposed to do and it does it well. My only complaint – and my reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 – is that the dust containment leaves a bit to be desired. Yes, there's a collection port and a collection bag on the port. With just the bag attached, you're going to have a big mess on your hands anyway. You definitely need to hook up to a vacuum if you're using indoors. Even with a vac, things can still get a bit messy. But the bag doesn't do much at all. Again, it's a very small complaint in the bigger scheme of things. The tool itself is top quality and a workhorse at that. I'd absolutely buy again and would (and have) recommend to friends.cn2092

Bought this for a few wood projects and haven't looked back since. Its been durable, powerful and the hook & loop pad has lasted great! The dust collector also works fantastic. If I had to complain my only thing is it hums fairly loudly but that's from the powerful motor and fans it has. Typically, I used the square sanders of days past and this is at least 5X more efficient, if not more. I was recommended this from a fellow at the hardware store because of the efficiency and was skeptical… not anymore though! Also has worked great for body work, as I share a shop and my friend has been using it for some of his restoration work. I personally would recommend this over the battery operated ones. Its much lighter and more nimble. As silly as it sounds, this is one of my favorite Dewalt products I have used.CodyJ

I had a Bosch GEX 125-150 AVE that worked fantastically for years … until the spindle broke. I took it apart and figured a £50 part would solve the problem but couldn't for the life of me figure out how I'd take it apart far enough to fit that part. And by then upgradeitis had set in. I wanted a Festool. Unfortunately it's a massive disappointment. Yes, the dust collection is superb (but then you *have* to use a vacuum whereas the Bosch had an option of a filter which worked well for the odd job) … and attaching a vacuum changes the balance of the machine so much so that I find one-handed work impossible – you can't simply hold it by the handle with one hand. I *love* the electronic brake so you're not waiting forever for it to stop spinning before you put it down. But. In use the vibrations are *terrible*. At pretty much all speeds. Now I hear you say, "it's a random orbit sander, what did you expect?". To that I say, I expected better. My old Bosch was an order of magnitude more comfortable to use. I could use the Bosch for hours without a problem. I'm struggling to use the Festool for more than 30 minutes. In summary the Fezza should be a lovely piece of kit. But it's not. And Axminster's returns policy of "you can only send a tool back if you haven't used it" isn't much use – it's impossible to experience the vibrations without using it! I bought this over 1 month ago and have been primarily using it to sand walls. I have it attached to a Starmix iPulse H class vacuum (M class is enough if you already have one). Starmix provide very basic step-down adapter which can be cut with a knife to fit the sander's dust extraction port. The dust extraction is excellent when using Granat net sanding discs and is still almost as good when using regular / non-net sanding discs. Irrespective of how good the dust extraction is, I would always recommend a respirator with filters sufficient for such dust (3M's 2135s / P3Rs), non-ventilated googles and ear defenders but don't take my word for it, do your own PPE research! The detachable power cord is a great idea. The vacuum I have has an auto mode where when the tool's power is plugged into the vacuum, the vacuum coms on with the tool. However, as I bought it from Germany, the power connection is EU, not UK but because I can swap out the sander's power cord, I can simply use the Festool EU connection which I bought separately. From my current usage, the speed setting make sense. Interestingly enough, on too high a speed, the friction between the sanding disc and wall causes heat so a lower speed and more patience is required. The trigger and speed adjuster both feel good in use and would say that there is an impressive amount of power for 400 watts when I'm using it. The vibrations are low providing you keep your hand on the top of the sander and don't over exert it, which is what it is ergonomically designed for. The sander is reasonably light and can be comfortably operated one-handed using your other to help navigate your vacuum hose and power cable. I note some pig tail markings on the plaster at times from the random orbital pattern but I'm reasonably convinced this is user error on my part in terms of how much pressure I exerted vs where I exerted it (ie: listing to one side) vs the speed. I also note that periodically, it is worth decoupling the backing pad with an Allen key and cleaning out inside as dust can still accumulate despite the dust extraction, especially fine dust from plaster. This may cause a loss of suction and perhaps some heat. Something that may not be too obvious is that you can buy a Festool product outside your home country yet register it in your how country. This makes online shopping across Europe much easier. I'm knocking one star off the overall rating because of the lack of longevity of the backing pad / base plate that is bolted to the sander to which the sanding discs are attached using hook-and-loop (aka Velcro). Despite me doing some heavy sanding with grits from P40 to P120, I only got a few hours out of that backing pad / base plate before having to replace it at a cost of about 40 pounds. The Velcro just wore down too quickly. Some might say that I'm not rating the tool and I'm rating a consumable but I disagree. The tool is useless with that item. Having to replace that item after just a few hours heavy use is quite an expensive proposition for a tool that already cost 600 pounds. There's no alternatives let alone better alternatives. All in all, I'm very happy I bought this sander. Even if I had known about the one concern above prior to purchase – the backing pads wearing out faster than I would like, I would still have bought it. I look forward to using it for years to come including on wood!SallyCantDance

Could hardly wait to get this one after about 8 months of waiting for Festool to ship them. Well worth the wait. I had a dewalt ROS before this one and it was much heavier, taller and when you shut it off it took a while to stop its rotation. This ETS EC solves all my issues and more. I do NOT see any dust around the project while sanding with this sander, It shuts off almost right after pressing the button, lightweight and love that I don't have to switch cords anymore between my other tools. Great sander for getting paper on and off quickly. Down side is that the cord is stiff and not very long, I prefer the makita soft and no kink cord with 8-9 feet of length. Also the on-off switch is in the same location and same color as the paper release button. not as user friendly as it could be and seeing that little bitty yellow line to indicate on. You guys can do better, Like your plunge router which is excellent and your 735 x planer which has great reviews and is my next purchase.Coach W

This is my first pad sander. I always used the orbital sanders. The Dewalt pad sander is much better for fine finishing. It's very smooth and not as aggressive as the orbital sanders. It is easy to change paper on this sander. The only thing I don't like, is the soft on/off switch. I like a firm switch.bill from the hill

I purchased the DeWalt Sander to replace my Craftsman block sander. Although I have been purchasing Craftsman for 50+ years and generally award them five stars, the sandpaper grips on their block sander is a complete disaster. At the hardware store I looked at all the major brands for replacement; the DeWalt was the only one with a truly well-engineered solution. The front is actually a clamp, which is unavailable on any other brand. The rear is a spring similar to all other brands but with one truly innovative feature–the spring applies equal pressure across the full with of the sandpaper, which none of the others have addressed. Thankfully, I can now use the sandpaper until it is worn out; not just until it rips itself off from inadequate retainer(s). I'm not surprised; I also have a DeWalt portable table saw because the engineering is light years ahead of the competition (specifically the front and rear rack and pinion guide system). The miter gauge is a piece of junk (I had to purchase a real one from another vendor) but the rest of the saw is a work of art. Kudos to your design team; the sander is a winner!dr_rick

I finally wore out my old BD 5 Inch Orbital Sander 10+ Years old and was extremely happy to find the exact replacement with a couple of new nice fCeatures. Also my new one came with 10 Bonus Sanding Discs at no extra charge! I was able to complete the job intended. I actually cut the nose off the upper front in order to sand my kitchen floor in the area where the cabinets overhang a few inches. It was quieter than I expected and easy to load the sand paper. The one drawback was that almost no dust was collected in the small collector bag that came with it, maybe because I messed up the air flow when I cut off the nose, even though I did tap the hole I had created. It also came with an adapter that could be hooked to a vacuum cleaner; I didn't get around to trying that option.dave_dave44

Give this sander a chance! I picked up this little sander five years ago and it has handled my small odd jobs very competently. Have never needed to replace the hook & loop pad in that time (unlike with other sanders I’ve used; looking at YOU, brand that rhymes with "Bill"…). A lone gripe is that the dust collector is held on by a tension-fit rubber ring, so if you bump it the thing goes flying. However, it catches a good quantity of the sawdust. THEN I got the bright idea to refinish my floor. Don’t worry, I rented a drum & edge sander for the bulk stripping of paint and finish – I’m not completely nuts. But I had to do some patching and only sanded up to an 80 grit with the rentals, and I was too cheap to rent the big guns a second time. So, I turned to my trusty Ryobi. In the course of this big project, my Ryobi was a CHAMP. It did 3-4 passes of my nearly 900 square feet of floor. I hooked it up to my shop vac for extra dust collection, but otherwise it was all the Ryobi. I had no business using this little sander to do a floor, but it powered through and is still going strong. When (if) it ever dies, I wouldn’t even think of getting a different sander. Great tool but the dust bag sprung a leak on the first day of using it to sand my deck. I don't remember snagging it on anything but now the dust blows through the hole until there's enough in there to clog the hole up. Probably could just tape it up but it's a little disappointing.Steve B

I bought this sander for ~$20 on Amazon and found it was a very good sander for that price. Many people have talked about the 'pre-punched' paper but I've had good luck with normal sheets cut into quarters. I found it fits fine in the clamps and is very similar to all other sanders in its class. It comes with a plastic plate to punch holes in the sand paper if you want it to suck up the dust. Honestly, all sanders make lots of dust and you should sand where dust doesn't matter. There's no sander in this price range w/o a vacuum attached that catches all the dust.Turlo Fiddleworth

Sander came earlier than expected and in great condition. I always did my final sanding by hand but no more! Sander is very easy to handle with one hand, super finish with 120 grit. I recently purchased a Bosch router and I have been very impressed with the quality of their tools, I would recommend them to anyone.Jon

The product was very good. It comes with a punch so you can use a standard sheet of sandpaper to make 4 sanding pads. The punch allows you to get the dust vacuum to still work without purchasing expensive pre-made pads. Vibration is strong and works fast. Very happy.Sparky82

I mistakenly purchased a battery powered oscillating sander which runs through batteries faster than I would have liked, so I eventually decided to hop on the corded sander train. After looking at all my options, this was the only that stuck out because it is shaped more like the Festool that everyone seems to be using. Holding this sander is incredibly comfortable with a natural 2 handed operation and trigger lock. Speeds range from hardly moving to incredibly fast. I haven't spent a ton of time with it but speed 5 is perfect for 60-80 grit rough sanding, then as the grit increases it's best to lower the speed to get a very smooth result. I have not used the included dust filter, instead I purchased a Dust Right FlexiPort and with a bit of duct tape it has a perfect fit to this sander and collects 99% of the dust. Overall this seems like the perfect sander for a very reasonable price. I see no need in the future to replace this model, just the Velcro pad as needed.Hedgehog

This is third purchase of this model of sander for various friends and members of the family. Why? Because it is an excellent product. Has the option of pad or cut sheet abrasive and does and excellent job as a general purpose sander. Best to buy quality abrasive and let the tool do the work. Hard pressure is not required. Generally like Makits as a brand and have a number of their products, which have all proved excellent.Mr

Bought this to replace an Erbauer ERB106SDR which died after about 4 years of use. Suspect it is the brushes which aren't replaceable on the Eebauer. Makita plus points: (1) quieter than the Erbauer; (2) lighter than the Erbauer (3) sands as well as the Erbauer despite 200W (vs 240W for the Erbauer) Negative points: (1) Cord is 190cm long which is mean. I have to use an extension lead when sanding above head height. The Erbauer has a 320cm cord. (2) Came with a 13amp fuse … way too high for a 0.9A motor … replaced it with a 2A fuse … I think Makita should change down to a 3A I use the sander with a industrial vacuum as I'm always working in old houses and surfaces may include lead paint (Always wearing a N95 mask, goggles and ear defenders). The dust extractor exhaust is 22mm diameter for those that need an adapter. There is no adapter supplied with the unit.SpeedFerret

I bought this sander after having great experiences with many other Dewalt tools (table saw, circular saw, drill, impact driver, and more). What a disappointment! The sander runs at most for 15 minutes on a single charge. It pad doesn’t rotate consistently either. Even with two batteries, it takes way too much time than it should to get through a job. I might have to replace it with a corded model, but I’m hesitant to go with Dewalt if that’s the case.Joel

Sanding isn't hard with an electric sander but this makes it very easy. The sander is very well balanced and the lower height really does make controlling this sander easy. I've used this for a few woodworking projects and it's very fast and effective. Well, understanding the amount of wood I'm sanding. I know battery life is an issue and that's partially due to the fact it's constantly running but I can get over an hour out of a 5ah battery. Remember, though, that I'm having to stoop to change paper for a few minutes here and there. Now as far as does it actually work well, it does. It's fast and leaves a smooth even finish even when sanding against the grain. I haven't had to go back over anything because it left sander marks.DJLodi

I don't have much to compare with but it seemed pretty solid. The shape was reasonably comfortable and with a 5ah Battery was balanced ok. I picked this one over the other brands because of the well rated dust collection but if you are using it indoors, the included bag is insufficient and will get dust everywhere. Using a dust extractor is a must indoors along with a respirator.Just another review

Also has worked great for body work, as I share a shop and my friend has been using it for some of his restoration work. I personally would recommend this over the battery operated ones. Great sander, works efficiently without overheating. The clips holding the sandpaper work very well and make changing the sheets easy. Dust collection bag collects a surprising amount of dust, although not everything. Useful hole punch for using standard unpunched sheets. All in all this was a good buy.Guest

I received your product in very short time. Great handling and shipping. The tool I was replacing broke during a project and I was forced to finish it using other methods before my tool arrived and have not used my new piece of equipment as of yet. Good product sold at a very competitive price, easy to use but adding perforations to existing sanding sheets can cause them to tear prematurely. Don't have to add the extraction holes to use them though!Robin H.

An excellent sander, almost entirely dustless when hooked up to my Festool CT MIDI. Light enough to use in either hand, overhead, and up steps when sanding a ceiling. Not too noisy either. Buy one!Colin B.

My trusty dewalt sandre is getting long in the tooth and a bit rattly…also damaged joints in my hand are more sensitive to fibration. I thought long and hard about the Festool Rotex 125 but in the end I went for the lighter, low vibration ETS 125 REQ. Since I have already largely switched to Abranet sanding disks I would not be tied into using Festool sanding disks. The ETS 125 is very light and quite quiet (although less than I expected from reviews), but despite that it is a great general purpose sander. It is snot be confused with the rotex and does not replace my Dewalt beltsander when I need to work down from very rough or uneven surfaces. Once the beltsander has done the initial rough prep, the Festool ETS 125 set at speed setting 6 gets to work very nicely indeed and even at p240 is getting to a very smooth finish. I am impressed. Dust extraction is excellent but here is one of my annoyances with the Festool – my dust extractor is a Trend T35 and there are 2 p[roblems, 1. adapting from the trend spout to the festool port is tricky. Trend and Festool customer support were of limited practical help although they responded quickly and tried to help. In the end Central Technology Systems, after some 10 emails exchanged, suggested that with some adjustment their 19-58 mm hose and adaptor set might do the trick. It does, BUT I need to run the adaptor with the adjustable air vent open maximally or the ETS 125 sets off the strain warning light on the Trend T35 dust extractor. This took several hours of fiddling and conversations with various customer services people. Now that problem is solved I can sand wood and epoxy resin down to p4000 with very little dust escape.Grumpybaldprof

I am very happy with this tool. I am not happy that it takes proprietary sanding discs. I broke down and bought the $200 sanding systainer. The performance of the sander and the abrasive is very good. I have had probably 10 different 5” sanders and used all different brands of abrasives. nothing has been as fast or as nice as this sander paper combo. I am happy with the purchase. the Abrasive systainer is worth getting as well. I will be looking to get a 6 in festool sander in the future. 4 star vs 5 bc proprietary disk and value for $.Daniel
