20 Best Facial Toner For Black Skin (Jan 2023 Update)

I have never tried this tonic until recently. I have been using a toner from another high end company but I honestly like this better. It leaves my face feeling smooth and clean without irritating my skin at all. I personally love the natural, herbal smell to this product. This will definitely become part of my skin care routine. I use this after my cleanser and before the BB hydrating face cream, which is also awesome by the way. Been using that for at least 10 years.BBfan4life

I love this toner! I am surprised that it took me this long to add toner into my skincare routine! After washing my face with BB oil cleanser, (or melt away makeup eraser,) I use this BB toner. Feels refreshing, and removes the traces of makeup left behind. On super lazy nights (which is not many) I skip the face wash, and grab a cotton ball, and swipe off my makeup. Just a tip, when I first got the toner, I was turning it upside down, trying to make the toner go on the cotton round, but the better way is to do a slightly angled pour. The bottle is a frosted thicker glass (I think) which is nice. Looks nice next to my other BB skincare items.Nicole

I just bought me second bottle of the milk peel toner. I found it to be an excellent product that works incredibly well for my skin. I’ve used Kiehls products for almost ten years now and I’ve been really happy with most. This one and the retinol serum, which I use together, have yielded notable results. My skin is smoother, clearer with a more even tone…and best of all, some of my wrinkles have been minimized. I find the price reasonable (I purchase when they’re on sale). The toner looks a bit weird because it’s separated into a milky layer on top and a clear layer on the bottom but you just need to shake the bottle really well before you use it and it’s all good. I would recommend to anyone to at least give it a try. I noticed some results in a few days which became even more noticeable after a few weeks of use.Renchick

I absolutely LOVE this toner. I find that this does a better job than 2% salicylic acid to keep my breakouts away. The biggest thing that got me hooked on this product was after two uses, when I woke up in the morning, the blackheads on my nose were completely cleared. I have never seen them that clear before and I exfoliate pretty regularly. I am a user of retinol, so my skin is on the more sensitive side. When I first opened the product, I knew that using this twice a day would be too much for my skin, so I tried using it once at night daily, but my skin became too raw to continue that schedule. Instead, I now use it 2-3 times a week at night, and it works well enough to keep my skin clear. I am impressed with this product because I have never found a product before this that is able to keep my skin 100% clear even during that time of the month (and I have been using salicylic acid for years – I usually get 2-3 pimples). I find that this doesn't leave my skin feeling dry at all the next morning which salicylic acid usually does. I wouldn't say this product is so hydrating that it can replace your hydrating serum step if you have one, but since it is an exfoliating toner, I am impressed that it replaces the moisture in my skin even with the LHA. Only reason I am detracting a star is because I'm not a huge fan of the fragrance (it has a citrusy smell), but it doesn't irritate my skin, and I could not use the product anywhere close to 2x a day like the label suggests. I received this toner alongside a few other products as part of a gift set that I received for free from Bzzagent. The rating is the fact that it is a good quality product. The quality is not the problem here-the problem lies in that it’s a good start, but it doesn’t carry me over the finish line.  If we were looking at a dry complexion, this would likely be great. If it was a normal complexion, it would be great or not, depending on if it leaned oily or dry.  If they wanted to market this for more oily complexions, it would be wise to include more acne fighting ingredients such as tea tree, witch hazel, etc., and cut out the almond milk and emollients. In short, Kiehl’s seems to be trying to fit everybody into their brand, when it’s clearly obvious that they are more suited for normal to dry complexions. corinne .b

Right up front, I do really like this toner, it's scent and astringency are great, it really cuts through the oil and dirt on my face and left it feeling clean and dry but not tight. I wouldn't recommend this for people with dry or sensitive skin as it would most likely be too irritating and/or drying as the formula contains alcohol as well as several extracts that can be irritants to some (lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus) , this however was no problem for my skin. My three stars are for price vs. value. I have trouble visualizing ounces sometimes so I just assumed for $55 this bottle would be HUGE, but the 6.8oz bottle is a modest size. For the price I can't imagine buying this again just because alcohol-based toners with fresh/citrusy extracts are easy enough to come by at lower price points, but if it's in your budget go for it. Beyond function and onto form, a plus though is the packaging, Aesop products just look great and the glass, amber apothecary bottles look and feel expensive.blissingme

AESOP B TEA BALANCING TONER I visited the Aesop store in Covent Garden and was advised this toner would be good for my skin type. It claims to be a gentle, an alcohol-free blend enhanced with Provitamin B5 and fortifying anti-oxidants, to refine pores, balance and prepare skin for hydration. I have to say the smell is interesting. I don’t actually mind it, but it reminds me of visiting a medical Museum of some sort! Haha. Aesop states it s suited to most skin types including combination and sensitive. I use this after cleansing, I put a small amount onto a cotton pad and sweep over my face and neck. It feels very light and refreshing (if you can manage the smell). It isn’t overly hydrating, but it leaves my skin feeling clean and not tight. I have noticed a slight balancing effect, using less powder to keep shine at bay during the day. Not a miracle cure for shine. PROS: 1. Light and refreshing 2. Balancing 3. Leaves skin feeling clean but not tight CONS: 1. £23 for 100ml slightly more expensive 2. Smell is rather odd 3. Not available near me, but can be bought online 4. I've just used this once so far and I'm already in love with it. I have oily, sensitive skin and this product is perfectly refreshing after hopping out of the shower. After applying I use a clay-based moisturizer and I get that matte finished look I've been striving for. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL. I ordered the Obagi-C kit not realizing it didn't come with the toner. Purchased toner immediately. All products cost less than what my dermatologist offers +copay for specialist visit. I've used obagi for a couple of years now so I know if its real or fake and this is real. It is also a "must have" when using the Obagi-C set. Use with a cotton round, after using the face wash. Use sparingly. Tingles a bit but totally normal. Be sure to keep away from eyes and lips. It will dry your lips out. Continue with C serum and so forth. I wish I could upload before and after pics. I didn't even know my skin looked so thin, uneven textured, a few sun spots and even a wrinkle between my eyes until I compared before and after photos. Well I guess before and one month into using this set, is more appropriate. My skin glowed like never before. This is a very gentle toner. I haven't had any burning sensations since starting it and the bottle package is awesome too. It lets minimal toner out on the pad so you don't have much wasted. I like this toner because it delivers on its claims and doesn’t dry my skin out. It shrinks my pores and reduces oil for a few hours and clears the junk out of my pores. I see some additional color in it which I’m not a big fan of but it is at the very bottom of the ingredient list so from what I know it isn’t a high amount. There isn’t added fragrance which I like. It just doesn’t do anything long term or lasting. The results only show for about 24-48 hours. I apply it as you would and essence and with a reusable cotton round and I get the same results. I like it because it doesn’t sting or leave me feeling dry or cause uncomfortable tightening. I will re-purchase. I think the price for quality and amount are fair, too. Nice product, feels great and cooling on the skin and gives a deeper penetrating hydration so not an obvious immediate top layer hydration like a moisturiser would give. Preps the skin nicely for serums. High quality frosted glass packaging so not travel friendly. Much thicker consistency than a standard toner, more like a water / gel texture. Package design makes dispensing a little difficult. Ingredients contain hibiscus extract but smells like cucumber to me. A little goes a long way. Incredibly hydrating product. My only issue with it is the fragrance. I would have preferred if the product was fragrance-free. I got this initially as a free gift when I bought some other products from this brand. After using it for two months it's been really great. I have only broken out twice since using it, and those were just small hormonal breakouts that healed pretty quickly. I use this then the pyunkang yul moisture cream and so far this simple routine is working out better than my previous longer routine. I have oily dehydrated skin and my skin feels refreshed after use. I didn't even know it was an astringent at first until I checked the ingredient list. My skin is usually pretty sensitive to astringents but it didn't react to this. It has aha and pha and a load of other good ingredients like willow bark extract to help with sebum control. I recently purchased this toner at Ulta on a whim. I had been looking for a new toner. I really like it. It is cooling and not harsh on my face at all. I think the smell is present but it is not overpowering and it fades quickly. I got it on sale, however I would purchase it again at the full price. The top is like a little pump that you can press your cotton round into and it wets it without having to worry about spilling any product. My boyfriend likes it too, haha!lindsay.d

The formula for this toner is great, and I appreciate the main ingredients, but it does contain an ever so slight amount of fragrance. I didn't notice this prior to purchasing because I've tried other products from Bliss that have been absolutely amazing and don't contain any perfume. I usually read the entire ingredient list beforehand. My skin is ridiculously sensitive, so I have to be really careful with irritating ingredients, no matter how small the concentration. I’m so happy that I purchased this What a Melon Toner by Bliss. It’s definitely watermelon! Some people say it smells fake but it’s a toner so it’s not gonna be 100% perfectly scented. I love that this has hyaluronic acid and witch hazel! This toner helps tighten skin, prevent blemishes and hydrates skin. I love smelling the watermelon while toning my face! I would give this product a 2 star. They never published my review that I wrote earlier that was a 2 star which makes me mad. This did nothing to my skin. Didn’t see any difference. It was pretty much just fragranced liquid. The smell of it was so strong it gave me a headache. Smelled so sweet and so b a d. So if you have a fragrance reaction, please d o n t b u y. I am not a big fan of toners and always feel they can be quite harsh on the skin, so never really use them, and after sampling this I think I will be sticking to my original plan. The fact this was advertised as a 'gentle toner', made me curious to see if I would notice any difference in my skin. When I noticed, however, that there is a heavy amount of fragrance in the ingredients list, I am certain it's not the gentlest of toners. I applied some onto a cotton ball and after cleansing, patted it onto my dry face and upper neck area. My face did sting slightly around the eye area, but I thought it was the product just settling in. In all honesty after a few uses, I didn't really notice any difference to my skin, apart from the texture which became slightly drier, certainly not more uniform or tight looking. If I am paying a bit more for a toner, I would expect to see something positive at least, but this just didn't cut it for me. I started using avene products about a year ago. I really liked them so I started buying different products. Using a regular toner was too harsh for my skin, so I stopped all together. Until I saw this on the website. It has great reviews, so I figured I would try it. Best decision for my dry sensitive skin. It makes my skin so soft and much smoother. I had such high hopes coz of the reviews! This toner is extremely drying and stripping on my extremely sensitive dry skin. It also leaves the skin around my eyes feeling very painful and irritated as if I actually have sores there. When I use the cotton pad, my skin feels squeaky clean and super dry. Whenever I apply the Elemis glow moisturiser after this toner, my face BURNS! I think it's the different fragrances mixing on sensitive skin. I am cynical about buying toners because my skin can never really tolerate them. I have VERY sensitive acne-prone skin and normally toners make my skin red, sore, itchy and break-out. HOWEVER, I am on Day 3 of using this apricot alcohol-free toner and I have experienced none of those things! My skin feels fresh and soothed. My face is always red and blotchy after a cleanse but it soon settles down and the toner has not made things worse, I would say my skin looks bright and is settling down in general! I tend to go towards “less is more” with this product and not over saturate the skin. I am using this with the marine cleanser, marine cream and marine oil (at night only) and I have seen my skin settle in three days. That’s what it is…. Holidays in a bottle. I first noticed the name of the product which was a bit funny. They say Alaffia is « a common greeting originating from Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, meaning a state of peace, health, and well-being ». How funny, in Arabic it also means health and well-being! 🙂 PS: Product arrived to Morocco in 3 days I ordered this product after I read positive reviews and was surprised to see the size of the bottle. I really didn’t expect it to be that huge! So I tried it and it has a mild coconut scent. I really love it! My skin feels fresh and clean. This is a good size bottle. The scent isn’t anything overwhelming. It absorbs nicely . It did leave a tingly sensation but I’ve had no bad side effects and I have pretty sensitive skin. I was initially hesitant to use this product as it's more for drier skin types, and I have oily acne-prone skin with large pores. I was worried this would break me out or feel too heavy for my skin. I was wrong and completely surprised at how much I love this toner. I use it morning and night and only use a little bit, two or three shakes of the container. I apply it on damp skin and follow it with my regular routine. I've only used this for four or five days but I'm amazed at how calm and plump my skin looks. I really didn't think that was possible for my skin. This toner does everything it says it'll do-my skin is less red and irritated looking, my pores are less noticeable, and my skin just looks really healthy and hydrated. I bought this product for my 14 year old suffering from acne (I think hormonal.) It immediately caused redness & irritation. He told me my face is burning. The next day we saw some small red patches on his face where he had no problems as a matter of fact those areas on his face still have the look of baby face. Let me tell you why we still give it 4 stars. He had some big and stubborn Blackheads on his nose and when he woke up we can see them closer to the surface and we were able to remove at least one big one without a problem. I believe this happened after the 2nd time he used the product. He is taking a break from it, but wants to try it again just on the nose to see if the rest of the blackheads come out to the surface so that we can extract them without damaging the skin. I cannot be without toner. I think it's such an essential step in my skincare routine. I love that this claims to refine pores. I have very large pores specially on my nose and I have noticed that they look smaller when I apply this toner. My skin looks less dull too after using it daily and my texture looks more refined. I like how my skin instantly absorbs this formula. It doesn't irritate my skin and it feels very gentle. I also didn't notice any scent. It removed any left over dirt on my face after I did cleanse. I love this toner! I’ve previously been turned away from toners because so many of them market themselves as exfoliators or an extra cleanse, but once I got this one, I can’t do my skincare routine without it! This toner markets itself as a 2-in-1, softening and hydrating the skin. The formula is a thin, watery consistency that I find soaks into the skin immediately. I pour a small amount into my hands and rub / pat the product into my skin. It layers well with other serums and moisturizers. Some reviews will say it leaves a tacky or oily residue, but I’ve never experienced this and actually love the way it makes my skin look and feel. After consistent use, this product has completely changed the way my skin looks and feels and I don’t go a morning or night without using it. What really sold me was when I layered this with my retinol and then my AHA/BHA serum. This toner provided the perfect base for more abrasive/irritating skincare products (truly changed the game for me!). I would absolutely recommend this to anyone, but especially those with dry skin. I always grab this when I have over exfoliated, got to much sun, or my skin is dehydrated. It nourishes/moisturizes the skin deeply and my skin is always left feeling soft and more plump. Because of my combination skin, if I used as a moisturizer or as a one and only product after cleansing my face, I found it to be to rich and slightly greasy. It does form a slight film on the skin so personally I don’t find that it works best to use right after cleaning your face. I would recommend more for those with dry and dehydrated skin or those who live in colder climates, because of how rich this feels on the skin. I have been trying to not use Toners in my routine for a while, but since using this it has made me to think again, because I use essences as my first step. This product is excellent and I have to use it now. Why? This toner/ampule help to stop and calm any irritations/redness/itchiness whenever I use actives or any weather changes. Mugwort, Centella, Panthenol, HA does not seem to do it's job on my skin (or is not as good as this toner). I use this toner, then follow by any actives and finally a basic moisturiser. I've purchased 3 mini bottles and 3 full size bottles from YS, and I am on my second full size bottle now. If you are trying to treat a skin condition or just want to strengthen/heal your skin, you should use this product definitely. If you exfoliate, then this toner is a must! Don't need to use too much product. There is no scent, has a little slip on it's texture but quickly absorbed. The longer you use this product, you will see very good results and good transitions on your skin. It will help your skin to improve. If you are in a rush or is lazy, just use this and a moisturiser/sunscreen and your skin will glow/good complexion. This is also good for dry skin/combo/eczema/sensitized skin. You will not need multiple steps or several skins of this, one layer is good enough, product will last a long time. You can save $ on other products that works/or is needed. I have a question?? Why is this and the Ultra light ampuole not constantly sold out?! This stuff is amazing, it needs to be used with the COSRX Ultra Light Ampuole to achieve it's healing, moisturizing, and skin protecting benefits at their maximum. I had chemical burns on my face from prescription retinol, and in 3 days of using both products in conjunction with the Laneige Water Sleep Mask and about a gallon of mineral SPF, my face is completely healed with only some flaking and tightness around and under my eyes remaining. I'm a type 1 diabetic and I've NEVER had my skin heal so quickly with no purple or dark brown discoloration where the open burns were. I'm blown away frankly!! It absorbs very quickly, I've been putting on 2 layers 3 times a day with the ampuole each time and the Laneige mask twice a day, and my combination/oily skin has ramped down it's sebum production by more than 50%. Which I don't understand because it doesn't contain Niacinamide…so maybe my skin is just super dehydrated and thirsty. ALSO, look how much is left in the bottle (pictured below) after 16 uses of (what I felt like) was a normal application size (it's basically clear so it's hard to get a good pic). They'd better keep making it and selling it here or I'll have to move to South Korea to get my fix! People are sleeping on this stuff. -I received three complementary toners by COSRX from the Picky app. I used the AHA/BHA Vitamin C Toner first because on the picky app I asked what ingredients/products help most with blackheads. Many people answered BHA or Beta Hydroxy Acids (Amazing Exfoliating Compound). -For reference my skin type is Oily/Resilient and I suffer from blackheads and occasional adult acne. -This product has FOUR ingredients good for Oily skin and all of its ingredients are low risk ingredients (Source:The Picky App) -I used the ABC Daily toner with a total of 5 skincare products with only one other being a new product to me. I used the product twice daily (Morning and Night) for 8 days total! -On the first day I had drastic results. The toner pulled out a lot of dirt from my blackheads that were semi close to the surface of my skin. -After about day three I stopped seeing the residue from the blackheads on my cotton balls and my pores seemed to be trying to go back to a normal size (I still believe I have large pores just not as large). -All in all I give the product a 4.5/5 stars. All products can use improvements and I’m not sure if introducing two new products at once may have caused it, but when I initially used it there was some irritation. Other than that the packaging is cute (See video on my TikTok @tokaioshu), the product doesn’t have an overwhelming alcohol smell like most toners do, and I appreciate how it really honed down on my skincare concern ❤️zaire.r

I've tried many many toners from different continents for almost 35 years now (I'm in my late 40's). And this is the one for me. I do not use cotton pads unless I particularly feel the need as it's far more important not to rub the facial skin (it's as thin as a tissue paper, you know!), but instead I warm some in between my palms and gently put my hands on and wrap my face, followed by gentle pressing/patting will do. It takes longer than using cotton pads, but this great toner will sink in and moisturise AND act as a great conductor to following treatments (serum/cream etc). By the way, I apply the toner 3 times before serum etc. and it is really worth the time and effort.Mimi

This lovely skin tonic suits my skin perfectly, it is non-drying and gentle. I have been using it (or its predecessor) – for many years – in fact the most recent purchase I had before this one was probably about 8 years old – and was still fresh and used regularly. This is the only toner that my face likes, lol. I've been using this twice a day for 2 weeks now, and It made my skin very hydrating and glowing. The texture is viscous and the consistency is not thick nor oily. This has helped me a lot and in the morning my skin feels so soft, plumped and nourished. The ingredients of this toner is really suitable for my skin and it didn't irritate my skin nor gave me any allergic reaction. This Weleda toner is just beautiful. Non-drying, removes any excess product left on my skin after cleansing. My skin feels balanced and soothed with no redness or irritation. Smells very pretty, like a light floral water, not perfumy or medicinal. Simply a wonderful product that works. It seems gentle and effective enough for varied skin needs. This toner definitely earns it's Smoothing title. Swiping the product over my skin with a cotton round results in a slight stinging sensation that subsides quickly. It's been effective in removing and renewing the topmost layer of skin and has helped me with my acne scaring. Despite the slight stinging sensation, the formula is gentle enough that it has not irritated my sensitive skin. The formula has is not scentless but it is very very light and non-offensive. Packaging is the only problem that I have issues with. I appreciate PCA Skin's spartan and utilitarian style and the fact that the bottle is recyclable is a plus as well. While I don't mind the bottle itself (standard plastic, no frills bottle), I do wish that they included a better top. Perhaps something with a pump? Either way, it's not a massive issue.Rachel

I am an estie and I love this product! Any bad reviews are from people who don't understand that chem exfoliants require time for your skin to adjust. Start with nutrient toner if this is too strong at first. Mild burn/itchiness is due to your skin not being used to chemical exfoliants. Start with once every 3 days and then work to every day once your skin can tolerate. Eventually you will have no itchy/burningJLD

This toner is the best toner on iHerb, in my opinion. I felt the effects of it right from the start. According to the brand, it provides gentle exfoliation. I'm not sure which ingredient is responsible for this, but I can definitely feel that my skin is much smoother than it's even been. Both rice and niacinamide are known for their brightening effects and the creamy texture of this toner makes it super hydrating and a little moisturizing. I skip the serum step when using this. I apply it after cleansing and follow with a moisturizer, there's no need for anything else. It leaves the skin super soft and glowy. Now that I've tried this milky toner, I can never go back to a normal watery one. It works great for my rosacea sensitive skin and also helps repair my skin barrier when it's impaired. I’m so devastated! I want to love this soooo much because I love anything to do with rice! I was so sure that this will be amazing and I just fall in love with this toner and end of the story. Let me tell you what happened to me. I have a dry sensitive skin. This toner does not have strong fragrance and has very smooth texture to it. Very gentle on your skin when you first apply. And Omg the glow it gives you is amazing! I love the glow!! That’s why I’m so devastated for how drying it is afterwards! 🙁 so what happens after a while is my skin gets really dry and I feel like if I smile, my skin will starts cracking. Because I wanted to love this toner sooo much, I used this for 3days straight even I felt it was drying. Very effective toner, with 77% Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract as the first ingredient. The ingredient list is very minimal. Doesn’t include fragrances or any harmful chemicals to the skin. The rest of the ingredients: Niacinamide, purslane extract & adenosine. I have combo-to-dry skin; this feels so soothing & healthy after a double cleanse. I use a 5oz bottle once a month – I wash my face twice a day & use this toner a minimum of two times a day (sometimes three). Will always purchase this.
