However, it can from time to time leave some foundation behind and I feel that the potency of the wash itself diminished over time. This is a mild, fragrance free cleanser suited to normal and dry skin types. I found that whilst it worked well for my dry, sensitive skin type, it is not as hydrating as the Cerave Hydrating gel to foam cleanser which is a newish release. It is a great first cleanse though, especially if you have makeup or sunscreen on as this cleanser is quite gentle and will not remove everything. I love using it during my non-active days (no retinol, acids etc) and for when I may have overdone it with chemical exfoliants and need to be gentle with my skin barrier. It also comes in a convenient pump and I use this on my body as well. Great if you have skin sensitivities and want something that isn't drying. I've been using a prestige brand cleanser for years (it was $40 for much less product), but had to change to CeraVe after my doctor's recommendation. I started two Rx products from my doctor for adult acne, both of which extremely dry my face out. I needed a cleanser that is mild, doesn't contain soap, doesn't contain a lot of ingredients, and is lotion-like (doesn't foam). This cleanser is very effective and leaves my skin soft, clean, and hydrated. Doctor recommended too. Just remember it doesn't foam up like most cleansers, but you wet your face and lightly rub it into your face for 30 seconds or so, then rinse and pat dry your face. It gets your face ready for whatever you will be putting on it. At the very least, put on a moisturizer and SPF. I highly recommend this cleanser. I bought three of the largest bottles. Like other CeraVe cleansers, this also contains three essential ceramides, and is fragrance free and non-comedogenic. This is a pretty good gel cleanser. The amount of foam that comes through the pump is perfect to wash my entire face. The fragrance is delicate and refreshing. After rinsing it off, my skin feels soft and super clean, something I wasn't expecting, to be honest. I've used another foaming cleanser that didn't make me feel like my skin was 100% clean. One thing that is important to mention is that before the cleanser, I always use a cleansing oil to remove my makeup and sunscreen and I wasn't sure if this one would totally remove what's left of it. Foam cleansers are more drying compared to other forms. The additional salicylic acid (SA) can further irritate dry skin. If you require a potent cleanser, this would be it. But it can have very negative effects if the formula doesn’t agree with your skin. I have combination skin and periodic cases of acne. One time, I had varying types of stubborn facial acne, so my dermatologist recommended to start with this cleanser. I used it every night, then used a light moisturizer. I also wore/wear SPF 50+ sunscreen regularly. The first few days, my skin flaked a little, but that was normal when trying a new acne cleanser. But after a week, my skin was red and peeling, and blisters suddenly formed on my chin. I went a few weeks without washing my face entirely, due to the pain. I opted to use a gentle face wipe, as well as slathering heavy moisturizers and Vaseline all day. I had not used any type of acne products in months prior, so I do not suspect any residual reactions. I had tried many products with SA in the past, including the Neutrogena SA cleanser in both gel and liquid form. There is always some irritation, especially when my skin is adjusting to a new product, but it was never so severe. (I only use acne-focused cleansers as necessary, and prefer hydrating cleansers that are eye-safe). Personally, I suspect that the combination of foam cleanser+SA was too drying for my combo skin. Even with oily skin, I do not recommend using this on a daily basis. And when you do use such a drying product, always pair with a good moisturizer and excellent sun protection! (It will also help you realize if the cleanser itself is to blame for any reactions, instead of sun damage or dry skin). 3 stars because the negative reactions were so harsh, but I was still able to use the rest of the bottle for my body acne, and it was surprisingly effective and non-irritating. A very risky trial-and-error.
I have been struggling with acne on and off and even more recently during the pandemic maybe because of the masks. I normally don't have makeup on when I use a mask but if I do it's just for a brief few minutes. I have been getting a lot of acne on my jaws, cheeks and temples, even on my forehead now. I have had a pretty good skincare routine yet I still break out. Years ago I used to use this as a teen and my skin was smooth and plump even tho I would get huge pimples here and there I think my skin looked pretty good back then. I got this when I stepped into a store while on vacation last summer. I'm 46 with oily skin and have occasional cystic acne flareups. When I first got this last summer, I tried it as my main cleanser twice a day. It worked fine for about a month. When I got a flareup on my chin, I added my Proactive cleanser at night and continued using this in the mornings. This stuff lathers like crazy!!! So only use a tad each time. It will last a LONG time. When I caught a sale on another cleanser I was curious about, I switched from this over the fall and then back to this in the winter. It never dried my face out in the winter, so it's definitely mild. With natural ingredients and its great price, I can easily recommend this to oily people. If you want an actual acne fighter, you can use it alongside Proactive like I do.tina.h

As a person who had been searching for the "perfect cleanser" for years, I realized a few things. Every company is going to have some new ingredient, some new benefit, some fancy way of describing their product… but at the end of the day, you just need a good face wash. It's worth it to spend a little more to get those key ingredients you don't always get in drug store face washes. This cleanser has become the one I stuck with because it has caffeine for aging skin, Vitamin E because that's basically an essential, and it defends against pollution. The menthol wakes you up and wakes your skin up to get rid of dullness. This face wash is simple enough and effective enough that it even had me buying the 1 Liter (which lasts a year might I add). Kiehl's would not let me post this review on their website, so it just goes to show you how they filter out the negative reviews. I received a travel size in one of those birch box things and used it every now and then and loved how it lathered and felt after washing my face so I decided to get a larger bottle when I eventually ran out. I started using this everyday and it destroyed my face. I started getting red bumps on my cheek, my acne hadn't been that bad since high school. I ended up throwing it in the trash. Once I started using Cerave products my skin cleared up in a week or so. This stuff is so expensive compared to your typical skincare brands and didn't work well for me at all, very disappointed.EricJ

I was so excited to get this. I loved the packaging and I loved the idea of this product and it all made me feel very fancy getting it. I have oily skin and acne and was really hoping to love this product. I used it for the first time during a nighttime shower. I loved the tinge of color but immediately I noticed it was scented. I figured it would be okay and went through with washing my face. I loved the feel of the wash and I felt it did a great job cleaning without stripping. It was about 20 minutes after my shower through that I needed to go wash my face again because I could not stand the smell. I figured I used too much and I would use less and in the morning the next time. I thought it would be great to smell nice in the morning. I gave it a couple of days and then tried a smaller amount in the morning. It was the same. I lasted about 20 minutes before I needed a different face wash to help get rid of the scent of this one. I loved the way it cleaned my face, and I loved the packaging but I could not get over the scent. I didn't finish the bottle, and I won't. If you like heavily scented items, this is perfect for you but it's not for me.Dray1006
Avène Cleanance Cleansing Gel has a smooth, light blue-hued texture that works well into my damp skin. Once massaged in, the gel texture rapidly changes into a semi-foamy lather. There's also a medium strength scent released, but I find it a pleasant experience as I am not sensitive to it. For heavy makeup application, I use this as my second cleanser in a double cleansing routine. However, it has also been a great standalone cleanser for everyday use when I am wearing very little or no makeup. I have non-sensitive combination skin and felt this easily left my face feeling cleansed without being stripped. My face feels incredibly soft afterwards too, which I love! Since I've begun using this both morning and night, I've noticed my skin is less oily overall, which helps to make my makeup last longer throughout the day. I have acne prone and combination skin. Along with this, I have sensitive skin at times so it's difficult for me to find products to put on my face that doesn't make me have a reaction such as redness burning or break outs. I really like the Avène Cleanance Cleansing Gel because it is super gentle on my skin. It doesn't make my skin feel tight after I wash it off. It's a gel consistency but once massaged in your skin with water, it turns to a cream foam. It gets stubborn eyeliner offz to where I don't have to rub hard at all. A little bit goes a long ways. The smell is very light but super pleasant. My skin afterwards feel baby soft, smooth and fresh. I love the way it makes my skin feel. It gets all of the oil off and seems like my pores are slowly shrinking as well. The price point for this cleanser is super reasonable. I use this in the shower mornings when I first wake up for a refresher and evenings before bed to get all the dirt and makeup off my face. It's also good for body acne. My acne on my, shoulders seem to be drying out a bit and not oily as it used to be. I would highly recommend this product to anyone faving the same issues I had. 10/10 from me.Monica

I've used so many face cleansers that worked for the most part, but did nothing for my eczema. I've seen your ad for multiple times and was hesitant at first, until my eczema began to get worse. I mainly had a small patch near my nose until it began to spread. Next thing I notice it was happening on the other side of my nose and now at the corners of my mouth.
