Best Hair Colorist San Francisco (2024 Update)

I went from a medium copper red to dark auburn brown with the shade Milano Brown – 5NAC. Picking a shade on the Ulta app wasn't the easiest process and going to the Madison Reed website only helped a little in that their quiz matched me to the same shade I was leaning toward based on the photos here. The shade may be a touch too dark for me, but I just dyed it today so I think it'll grow on me. The sites, both Ulta and Madison Reed, list Milano as a "dark chocolate brown," but the actual box clearly says Dark Auburn. I'm mostly okay with that as I love red, but I was actually aiming for a browner brown. While there aren't highlights in this formula, it does have some vibrancy and shine to keep it from being mousy. It is, at least on me, definitely a dark red brown. The kit is a very good and complete kit. I love that it has 2 pairs of gloves, a barrier and wipe to keep you from dying your skin and there's plenty of dye for a full application. I don't know how I feel about the shower cap as I did start to feel a little warm in it. It achieved a full color application, though, so I'm pleased. My hair feels a little textured after dying it, but it doesn't look dry or damaged in any way. It's honestly like I used I volumizing spray or mousse, but I didn't. Maybe there is something like that in the conditioner because my hair does look fuller. I have very fine, straight hair so it looks very good to me after the complete process. That whole process, for a full head application on hair that hasn't been dyed in months, took me a little over an hour start to finish. Every step was easy to complete for someone used to dying their own hair and the instructions are clear for any level of experience. I worried a little that the price meant it might be too advanced for me, but it's like all the other kits that I've tried with a few nice extras. The price and difficulty finding my right shade are why this gets 4 stars instead of the full 5. The kit is a 5 star and then some kind of kit, but not being able to tell if you're picking the right shade is a big problem when buying online. $30 for something I've never tried before when I'm used to paying around $3 for Revlon ColorSilk was a risk. I wanted something different, though, and this absolutely delivered. I'm very likely to try it again in the future. I'll be looking at a different shade and hoping for a sale.Adele S

I used this hair color religiously for 2 years, thinking it was a safer option than other box dyes. The color is good, it's easy enough to use, and the amount per kit was fine, even for my super long hair. However, I would notice more hair loss after coloring, and over the course of 2 years, I would have several episodes of hair loss. I thought it was due to stress, hormones, etc. But I researched and came across other reviewers and encounters of hair loss like mine from various Madison Reed color kit users. Madison Reed claims to be free of the traditional "harsh chemicals" found in hair dye, but fail to mention they simply replaced the usual suspects with harsh alternatives: ammonia is subbed out with ethanolamine, which is known to cause skin irritation and can also cause hair loss!!! There is a new class action lawsuit against Madison Reed for this very reason, as per Feb 2022 (NY), and I am certain there will be many more. I'm 49 so hair overall has changed. I've been using this color for a couple of years now. It's overpriced, and the last 3 times I've colored my hair within less than 2 weeks grays are shining! After 5-6 washes I am still having grayish black colored water. I can't attribute this to one specific thing but I purchased about 6-8 boxes when it was BOGO these are all from the same timeframe. I only color it every 6 weeks if I can help it but it honestly needs it after 2.5-3 weeks. I have a few boxes left but unfortunately I won't be using it. I went back to mixing my own. The black doesn't seem like real black either… it's like a reddish tint after a few washes. I don't mind that so much, BUT I do mind seeing color wash out after 5-6 washes literally up until I color again I am still washing out color. It's been very drying as well. It just seems the entire formula has changed since the first time I used it.Fkpe1973

I personally think this dye is great, but I can think of another brand that has more staying power and is cheaper, so for that reason I can only give this 4 stars. The tone of this pink is unique to pinks I have bought previously and I think that's great when wanting some dimension! The texture is hard to describe but not its really creamy or gel like. And I think it smells like peppercorn, which doesn't bother me. I find a tube of this goes a really long way too, which is fantastic! The staying power is pretty average for your vivid pinks. Its rare for them to last too long. But I touch mine up every few washes around the roots and let the rest fade to a pastel, so its no big deal.dominique.f

I recently tried this product for the first time and I think it’s now one of my favorites! I’ve gotten TONS of compliments since I used Blue Ruin and I’ve used them all, over the years. Warning: stuff is Pravana Vivids level of stainage. RIP to a couple of ratty old towels, lol. My hair is between a level 2-3 with grays and I bleach and then highlight it to level 7-8. Pro tip is that I mix this product with a little conditioner and Olaplex 3 and then leave it in my hair for 2 hours. It really saves it from being fried. I have a feeling I’ll be using that combo for a while.lisa.b

I tried to manage my expectations a little with this product, as it’s recommended for light blonde or pre-lightened hair but mine was a balayage with dark blonde/light brown. Turns out it defied my expectations and still came out as a super vibrant red! My hair is chest length and the tube had just about enough to cover nearly my whole head (my roots are dark so I avoided those) with a small amount of conditioner mixed in to stretch it a bit further. I’m now on wash 3 or 4 and I’m surprised by how much colour is still in my hair! The vibrancy has been toned down but it’s definitely still red and I expect it will be for a while yet.Nicole

I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. I would suggest that anyone with thick hair or very long hair should invest in two packets and not chance a dye disaster!! I have long hair but it is very thin so one packet for me was sufficient. I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol's hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy. I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs. Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn't compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin. I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. The best thing of all about Clairol's Nice n' Easy hair dyes are they cost just $9 from your local supermarket. Sometimes, you can grab them on special for just $6! SIX BUCKS! Staff Review by BC's Tamara I'm not going to lie – I have greys. Lots of them. But the Clairol Nice'n Easy Permanent Hair Dye did a mighty fine job of making them disappear! I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. I picked this colour probably about 6 to 12 months ago. Wasn't sure about it at first. I have dark brown hair naturally. I usually dye it a chestnut colour. So this is a bit different than what I usually dye my hair with. But people have been complimenting how they love the colour my hair, so I kept it this colour since then, and I absolutely love it. It is my favorite colour for my hair. I really hope they don't discontinue this colour, as this will probably be my lifetime hair colour lol….. Although I'm having troubles finding it in stores right now, so it's making me a little worried that is just a limited time. And if that's the case, I don't know what to do for my hair colour. Go back to my chestnut colours. I do recommend this color and product. Love how it feels in my hair. My hair soft and the colour is very vibrant. It lasts long time. I do wash my hair with cool to cold water though. It helps keep the red bright longer. One thing though, it does continue to run every time you wash your hair so when your hair is wet it will stain your towels, or your shirts, or bed, or pillows. But I guess that's part of dying your hair red as it will always have the colour run. Does a great job at covering up the grey hair. Please keep this colour!!SPARKLES

This is the first time I have ever dyed my hair, I’ve had naturally red curly hair all my life but wanted to change it up a bit. I’ve always wanted to dye my hair burgundy so I got shade BR2 passion fruit. I will say it is such a pretty color but it isn’t exactly like the picture on the box. I’m sure that’s to be expected especially since I already have natural red hair. The color turned my red hair into a darker color with purple undertones, there’s definitely a noticeable difference which is what I was looking for. The reason for 3 stars is because this hair dye smells absolutely HORRIBLE. The whole time I was applying it to my hair my eyes were watering as well as my nose burning. It felt like I had inhaled a ton of chemicals, even almost 10 hours later It still feels as if I’d inhaled chemicals. This was my first time dying my hair at home. I have medium brown hair and when longer it has natural highlights. Since I wear it short, the darker colors clash with the gray, so I got this since the box matched my natural color. It definitely covered all gray and was easy to apply (I used bowl and brush instead of squeeze bottle). However, it came out as a copper color highlighting my hair, not simple ash brown. I like the color, though! But it’s just not what was on the box. The other nice thing about this color compared to colors I’ve had at salons is it didn’t irritate my skin at all. I have very sensitive skin, and this didn’t sting or burn, like I’ve had from salons. Also a plus is the after color conditioner. It leaves your hair SOO soft and smooth. Originally when I picked the color off the lime crime website it looked more like a tan neutral almost with subtle hints of peach close to nude color, and then when it arrived and the I swatched it – it was so far from what it looked like on the website? Hence why I usually don’t like purchasing make up mostly “lipsticks” online. However, I was extremely surprised how beautiful it was with little to no make up on and just very light mascara and lashes and how beautiful it went with my pale skin it wasn’t too dark and it wasn’t too late it’s the perfect shade for any occasion. I wouldn’t say it’s a nude color, I guess it could be placed in the nude category but I’ve found it had more hues of browns grays purples almost like a very dry it out purple with subtle and when I say subtle I mean very subtle hints of pinks and peaches and just all sorts of colors that I can’t quite point my finger on may be a little bit of a gray but mix those all together and you get this beautiful cashmere color that goes on smooth! I love that it’s a liquid lipstick aka VELVETINE matte (so I know it won’t be coming off on my teeth, clothes, drinks or even when I’m eating greasy foods – THIS HAS STAYED PUT!) I’ll even go as far as saying it lasted one very long passionate date night with my husband 🙊🙈😂 (insert blushing emoji here)  This was actually my second time purchasing this shade, and I would definitely purchase it again and again! Limecrime has great sales from time to time so make sure to look out for that! I think they’ve rebranded their website at showing the exact color on different skin tones and even have multiple lips pictured so you have a better idea how it will look, from when it was just the same pair of lips that was always pictured in every shade! I recommend any of limecrime’s liquid velvetines as they are soft on the lips and go on very smoothly.chantal .v

I would NEVER recommend this dye to anyone. It only gets a star because it smelled nice. I got Sea Witch and it has dyed every surface my hair touches that color if the strand is wet. As soon as any water hits my hair, the color just starts running everywhere. I just put a little gel in my hair so I could braid it and my scalp has turned green again and so are my hands. My hair has been falling out more than usual after using this dye and all my towels, pillow cases, every surface in my bathroom, the sink at work, they are all covered in little hair strands that turn the counter top green. It’s infuriating. I get that washing your hair means color will come out, but I’ve NEVER had any other brand wash out like this or turn every surface it touches that color. I will never be buying it again and I’m probably going to take this color out of my hair soon. I’ve dealt with this for almost 2 weeks and it’s only getting worse. I would not recommend this dye to ANYONE And to put my review up, I have to choose if the product is fair, good, or great and it’s none of those thingsAngie24

I love this brand so much. I’ve used maybe five of their colors, but the jello and chocolate Cherry are my absolute favorite ones. First off, the color penetration is excellent. If anyone out there is looking for tips, try rinsing your hair with cool water every time you wash it. Keeps the color longer and stays vibrant. The smell is a plus!!! And the price isn’t bad considering you’re getting over two more ounces of color compared to Manic Panic. I’ve been doing my hair funky colors for about twenty years now, I’ve tried literally every brand out there. I even put myself through beauty school and experimented with top notch dye, yet I still come back to this brand. I love it! I’ve got jello and cherry in my hair but I’m looking forward to trying Mochi soon, I’m excited about the grey/purple/bluish look it has. My rule of thumb is go darker and enjoy the fading process. PLEASE be aware that this has a chemical called ethanalomine in it. A corrosive and dangerous substitute to ammonia. No harsh chemicals? Bah! I have lost 75% of my hair since I started using this product during the pandemic last year. I have been through rounds of steroids injections to try to bring it back. It has ruined my life. Shame on you Madison Reed. Google "ethanolamine hair loss" and you'll find it causes up to 85% more hair fall than the typical ammonia.UBA

Came out way, way darker than expected. I would describe the color as “soft black” and definitely not “medium brown”. I had to pay a stylist to fix it. I also have been experiencing a significant amount of hair shedding since using this. My stylist confirmed that my hair definitely looks thinner. A bit of Google searching confirmed that this is a common problem and there is even a class action lawsuit in NY over it. Just pay a stylist or use another brand. I am 48-years old and this was the first time I have ever dyed my hair. I was starting to really get grays and wanted to cover them but keep my hair color as close as possible to my natural color. I bought the Sardinia Red and it covered my grays beautifully. It's a little darker than expected indoors but its a very radiant red when you are outside in the sun. I was lucky enough to be able to use Bleach It! from got2b in exchange for an honest review and I'm so happy I did! Its instructions and simple, easy and clear; everything went exactly as expected given the instructions and it comes with everything you need. I started with a combination of dirty blonde and dark pink hair and applied the bleach mixture allover for the maximum 45 minutes (I was bleaching in preparation for dying it bright blue, so I wanted it as light as possible) and I achieved the absolute lightest hair possible (almost a silvery white blonde) in one application!!! I was definitely very impressed – it typically takes me two applications to get this light (if I get there at all). There was very little brassiness to begin with upon washing the bleach out and, after applying the purple conditioner, my hair was pure silvery white, not a hint of yellow to be seen (and it smelled good!). Now, I will say that my hair is feeling a tad dry and has that "bleached" feel when you touch it, but it's definitely not any worse than any other bleach and for sure better than many as far as that goes (and it would be silly to bleach and not expect any damage). I'm super happy with this bleach! I color frequently and I know that I'll be revisiting this bleach kit again next time I need a touch-up!sara.r

I'll start with that fact that I bleached the ends of my hair recently (maybe 2 months ago) with a different at home product. Other than that, my hair hasn't seen bleach or hair dye in years. This was not a "I'm going to get you platinum blonde" box. It took my medium brown hair/light brown (where I had previously bleached) to a dirty blonde level. Essentially darker than advertised for the max length of time recommended (45 minutes). My hair did feel a little dry after using but since that section has been bleached before, I am not factoring that in my rating. I did appreciate the clear instructions and the inclusion of 2 gloves (other product I used only had 1). Also, please follow the directions. I made the mistake of loosely putting the cap on the applicator bottle which created a mess. Also, one little thing I do find annoying is the directions tell you to do an allergy test 48 hours before doing all your hair. However you are not provide direction on how to mix a small amount of product to do said test. And the directions clearly state that you need to use the product immediately once mixed. So how do I do a allergy test 48 hours in advance without mixing the product that is suppose to be used right away. I normally use loreal quick blue powder bleach so this was thinner and more liquid than I'm used too but it works well for easy application. make sure to read the instructions because you need to mix 3 things (inlcuding the anti brass powder packet). I poured out the components into a plastic mixing bowl so I could use a brush for my application since I wasn't lightening my entire head. I initially forgot to mix in the anti brass powder and there was a noticeable difference in the areas that did and didn't have the anti brass. I have dark Asian hair and this lifted it to a 9 after about 35 minutes (and I definitely could have waited longer). make sure to fully saturate your hair. there's not a ton of product (they recommend 2 boxes if you're dying your whole head and it's longer than shoulder length) so just be aware. all in all though, I'm pleased with how this worked and would recommend it for anyone new to bleaching their hair and don't want to buy the bleach powder and developer separately. I'd also recommend mixing in olaplex or Ion color booster for extra hair protection when bleaching. Unfortunately, I have to agree with the only other reviewer for this product (Violet Ash) because for some reason, the color didn’t take at all. It was kinda there immediately after application, but after my first wash post-color it seemed to completely wash out. I actually came to this website to see how long I should wait before I can apply another shade. I’ve been a faithful user of Schwarzkopf since discovering it a few years back and every other shade is an easy 5/5. This color is a new release and it looks absolutely beautiful on the box, so I hope they are able to tweak the formula so it performs as well as the other shades they offer. I typically use a color within the 4 range so I anticipated that it might not show up on old growth, but I have a skunk stripe along my side part that is solid white and although it has a slight lavender hue under certain lighting conditions- there is no way anyone could tell I tried to cover my grays just a week ago. My hair is super shiny though… so this particular shade functions more as a glaze/gloss than a dye. *I would recommend and buy again, I already have my back up ready to go and I think Schwarzkopf has the best at home color products… just not this particular color. I dyed my hair bleach blonde at home, which turned my hair very yellow. So, I decided to go back to my light brown hair. I had a hard time deciding what brand and colour to use, especially because I was worried my colour would be greenish. So I purchased “sparkly light brown” and I love the colour ! My hair is not greenish at all and I think this is by far my favourite brown ever !! Also my hair is super soft and smells so good! I highly recommend if you are going from light to brown.Ella12345

Charcoal Fushia: I have dark brown hair with a 3 inch wide grey skunk formation from crown to back of skull. I look good in cool toned reds which are hard to find. Been using a high lift magenta that's fine for my long hair but doesnt cover grey n gives hot roots. I orderd this fushia and strand tested on grey bangline and bangs. Easy to use, easy to rinse, 0 bleeding, 0 scalp staining. When finished all grey was covered. It came out a beautiful medium darker bright cool toned red/fushia/magenta and left hair soft without conditioner. LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT ITChristy

I received Schwarzkopf Keratin Color in 8.0 Medium Blonde from Influenster in return for my honest review. I have used boxed colors in the past but for the past 5 years I have been mixing my own hair color using products from Sally's. My hair was in need of color, so this trial came at a good time. I have never used a color that had a pretreatment for your ends. It was easy to use but I didn't see that it made any difference honestly. I liked the texture of the color itself being a cream instead of liquid like some colors. It had an odor but not strong like many blonde colors. It took a bit to wash it out. I found it odd that I had to towel dry my hair and then put on the conditioner, then wait 3 minutes to wash it out. Overall the color came out nicely but still a little brassy despite the brassy correction conditioner. It did leave my hair a little frizzy and the ends aren't as nice as usual. For a box color it is good though.jessica .b

I received a box of Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Cream for True Blondes and was very pleased with the results! Pre-pandemic I was in the salon for color every two months and never thought I could get good color at home. Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Cream made getting great color at home easy, virtually mess free, and from start to finish, it took about an hour. The instructions are easy to follow and required just a bit of mixing. My hair is a darker blonde with some of red. I used Dark Ash Blonde color and and the color came out great leaving a nice wash of color with no brassiness. My hair was left really shinny and had great dimension. The conditioner packet in the box was an amazing addition because it left my hair feeling really silky and smelling great. I would have loved a slightly larger tube of conditioner since my hair is very long and I only got one use out of it. I can't wait to see how long the color lasts but I would definitely use this Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Cream again.keely.n

Well I'm not a huge fan of the Schwarzkopf Keratin Color 9.1 Light Ash Blonde .😔 I normally keep my hair platinum blonde sometimes I might add another color just for fun. My hair is dry brittle from all the bleaching throughout the years but I've never had any problems with it falling out or frying until now. 😮 I thought it was interesting this kit contained a hair Serum to apply before coloring but other than that, the process isn't any different from the other coloring kits. I applied the Serum and mixed applied the color. I left it on roughly 35 minutes. After I washed it out, I towel dried and added toner . I left the toner on another 2 min. I noticed my hair was unbelievable dry . I added some Nexus conditioner let it set for a few then rinsed. While blow drying, I realized I was gonna have to cut a couple inches off my ends. So that's what I did. I personally am not a fan of this color because it's too gray for me plus there are some purple spots . I also noticed it didn't have a real bad ammonia smell like other color kits or highlighting kits I've had in the past.amanda.h

I have being dying my hair bright, vibrant red for just over five years now, and Arctic Fox has been part of my color maintenance routine since day one. Vibrant red hair is not easy to maintain and keep from fading quickly, which can very quickly do serious damage to your hair if your only using ammonia-based chemical dyes every time you need to refresh your color. Arctic Fox doesn't damage hair at all. In fact, it helps undue the damage caused by permanent dyes because it doesn't have any harsh chemicals that strip hair. Arctic Fox is actually GOOD for your hair and works just like a conditioner, not like a hair dye. I add Arctic Fox to my regular conditioner (sulfate free of course) so that every time I wash my hair I'm also keeping my red looking vibrant and even healthier every time. I always wash my hair using the coolest water I can tolerate and after I shampoo I apply my premixed bottle of 3/4 sulfate free conditioner, 1/4 Arctic Fox Wrath + a dollop of Violet Dream and let it sit on my hair secured on top of my with a claw clip while I finish the rest of my shower routine, just like I would do with a nourishing hair mask. Once my routine is done, I rinse out my hair thuroughly in cool water and towel dry it only so I get the most out of conditioning my hair, and viola! My looks, feels softer and healthier than before I washed it, plus my red still looks like it did the day I first day I dyed it. It's a win win. Not only does Artic Fox keep my red looking great, but it leaves my hair healthier every time also. Plus the custom colors you can create by mixing different different Arctic Fox colors together are endless! I was amazed at the color i got by mixing Purple AF + a touch of Aquamarine! It sounds crazy to mix aquamarine and deep purple together, but the color came out a multidimensional dark blue/purple-ish color that changes color depending on how the light hits it. It's my new favorite color! It does come out very dark, so I apply it (no conditioner added) to the bottom 1/3 of my hair and lightly pull the color upwards into my red to get a perfect blended fade from bright red to deep blue/purple. I have virgin dirty blonde hair. I bought the shade Transylvania which is a pure black color. I applied it last night to my clean hair, no products or nothing in it and let it sit in foil for about 40 minutes. I didn't apply the dye to my whole head, I just wanted to add pieces here and there throughout my hair like I've done in the past. Upon rinsing my hair out with cold water and letting it dry I noticed how faded the black looks. In the shower the water ran blue. I know black dyes typically contain blue but this was like a vibrant blueish green. In artificial lighting the dye in my hair looks like a dark grey, but in the natural sunlight it looks like a greyish green which isn't very pretty at the moment. I'm going to give it one more go before I decide whether or not to return this. I usually LOVE arctic fox dyes and have never had issues before but this black dye really needs to be reformulated.Jen

I used this for the first time this week. I really like the shade. The trick to getting a good application is to make sure you shampoo your hair before application so it’s damp and why residue/build up is gone, which can make the color not adhere to your hair. Remember, semi-permanent coats the surface of your hair, not the cuticle, so you want it as clean as possible. Using it on dry hair will give you a tint, but probably not the bright effect you were hoping for. Liked it so much, I got a few more shades of red and brown to try out.shannon.g

this stuff is AMAZING!! So I have been on the grey silver hair trend (well trying to get there at least) lol and the stuff is a lifesaver! I couldn't get the darn brass out of my hair and it was driving me crazy! tried almost everything! My last option was toning but after all the bleaching I didn't want to use chemicals… this saved my life and turned my pale yellow to a beautiful silver after one wash with a little bit in my shampoo! then I shadow tried with it full strength! no brass slightly profile like I wanted (only in the sun and thats because I left it on as little longer to achieve the purple silver look). I also used it on my son because w bleached his mohawk twice but was still orange like really orange! one freaking wash with a purple shampoo I made with this (a little stronger than the one I made for my hair since his was so orange) and we got a beautiful silver!! I'm 1 wash!! no more expensive purple shampoo for me baby! I got one bottle and have made 3 batches of purple shampoo, shadow ripped my hair fill strength 4 times and still have over half a bottle left! My go to and will always keep it stocked in my house!! totally recommend if having title getting brass out or arrived orange after bleaching and don't want to bleach again!jessica.e

This bottle will last you a good while if you mix with water. It will still do the job and look bright and shiny. I used this to colour the blonde as my regrowth came through and trust me it looks better then having half blonde half black hair. Mixed this with the sapphire and got a beautiful blue. My hair was a highly dull off-black with an auburn brown tint from sun exposure. The ends (about 3inches) of my hair was a dark blond from permanent hair dye about 2yrs ago that was still growing out. My hair length is a few inches past my collar bone so I suppose it's medium length. I have high density hair (lots of hair strands) and my hair strands are thick. I would always have to buy 2 boxes of hair dye for my hair because it is so dense. However, I only needed one box of this hair dye and I even had about 1/4 of it left over. The box contains a set of instructions (which are very clear by the way), a sample of their shampoo and conditioner, gloves (which didn't break or tear), hair dye, developer, and an applicator bottle. I personally prefer using a mixing bowl and applicator brush. Next time, I will use those items instead. I parted my hair into six sections and worked one section at a time and started on the roots first throughout my head, then proceeded to the length of my hair. It states to let the dye sit for 20min but considering that my hair is a bit color resistant, I let it sit for about 40 instead. Normally, I wouldn't extend it for this amount of time, but considering this product was natural, I took a chance. I wouldn't recommend you do this but use your personal experience and judgement. The instructions strongly recommend that you do an allergy test (place the hair dye on inner elbow) and watch it over the next 48hrs to see if you will have an allergic reaction before using the hair dye. However, I did not do this. I do have sensitive skin but never had an allergic reaction to any hair dye so I based my decision partly off that. I didn't like the shampoo nor the conditioner that came with it. The shampoo made my hair tangle and it felt like it was stripping my hair. The conditioner wasn't effective in making my hair feel conditioned. The actual hair dye made my hair feel soft becaused it is packed with oils. I still would use the shampoo and conditioner since they are meant to work together after the hair dye process. The hair dye was a COMPLETE SUCCESS! It completely covered my blond ends and the entirety of my head. My hair is now black. I must state that this Poppyseed color (2N) is a NATURAL black so it is NOT jet black. I actually wanted jet black hair but the Vitamin Shoppe that I shopped at didn't have it so I got this instead. Next time, I will definitely be getting the jet black which is called Licorice (1N) which is the darkest shade. I can't wait to do it again!LovelyBreeze

I've been dying my hair for about 33 years…. other brands always left my hair brittle, dried out and stripped… the color didn't make much sense either, no matter how "natural" I tried to look. I was convinced the only thing to do was stop dying my hair and go "naturally gray". Well after 9 months of not dying my hair… there wasn't a whole lot of "gray" to get excited about…it just looked mousy and non descript…and worst of all..juat made me look older. I didn't think I had anything to lose so I tried NaturColor in Mullein Blonde… so close to my childhood hair color. I was so pleasantly surprized. I purchased the color "Dark Navy" hoping to achieve a deep blue color and it did exactly that ! As you can see on my before pic, I had bleached and stained blue hair from previously using semi-permanent blue dye, as well as dark blonde brassy roots regrowth. I did a strand test first to be sure of the color but it came out beautiful ! I was afraid it would come out too dark but it's great 🙂 I will update this review after a few washes to see if it washed out a lot or not.Jessica

This hair dye is super easy to use! I love how it's just like shampooing your hair. I got the color soft greige because I wanted to slightly darken my washed out tips. However, because my hair was already pretty dark, this color lightened my natural black-brown hair and got rid of the brassiness from my previously dyed ends. But… for a couple weeks after using this, there was a slight light purple tinge to my hair in certain lights. So, this product worked, but I probably got the wrong color and that's on me lolLillian

Expected a dark bluey tint to my hair which is naturally dark grey. Turned out lightish brown? Didn't see any hint or hue of blue at all and I didn't want brown. I've brought the same product again after but in black colour and turned out brown as well but more of a blackish brown. Not good unless u want the colour to come out brownishJune

I’ve dyed my hair plenty of times and followed the directions. Used about half the tube. Left it on 40 minutes, rinsed with cool water… nothing. Hair is exactly the same as it was before dying. It does smell really nice though.Meg

I have been using this product for several years. I mix two colors and I am happy with the results I get. Going to the salon to have my hair color would cost over $75.00 every 4-6 weeks. The quality of this product is very good. I used the correct concentration of developer to color ratio on a test spot. it did not lift my hair. I haven't been able to achieve HI lift color ( any brand)( and I have tried every brand) on my hair since I have had more grey hair because my dark level 6 has gotten darker with hormonal changes. That being said I believe this product is a good value and is high quality, but unfortunately i cannot use high lift colors on my hair any longer . I went back to my stylist for partial foils with bleach is the only way to lighten my resistant dark hormonal hair and tone the grey highlights to blonde. My hair has been through it. I was doing rainbow colors till covid hit and then got ballsy and tried bleaching my hair; burned off a good chunk. Followed up by a hairdresser tangling my hair to where I lost another chunk :(. It's been a bad few years on my hair to say the least and I'm in repair mode now. I really liked how this turned out on my hair. My hair is already pretty dark but my roots grow in pretty fast so this was absolutely needed. It does not have a super strong chemical smell, and left my hair feeling soft: I have problems using color that often damages my curl pattern. This did not! This is my hair immediately after wash. For reference my hair is a medium to light brown with an ash undertone and some gray hairs. Midnight blue is really nice with an undertone of a blue tint but no actual blue to your hair. Jet black is very dark, sharp and glossy looking. Natural black still solid coverage but a softer tone to it. Chestnut brown has a golden almost auburn color to it. Red hot rhythms is stunning when first applied but quickly loses color in less than a week making your hair look very much like a box dye job. Golden blond is true golden warm tone but again you need a professional to lighten your hair first in order for the color to take all the way through your hair. I don't know who has their nose broken, but the conditioner smells absolutely fabulous. Reminds of a salon honestly. obviously when you're dying you need to have a fan going but even that's not a bad smell. Bottom line as with any color going darker than your hair tone is always easy and possible. And going lighter impossible without a bleach or toner to lighten it first before depositing color. I really liked this brand, it was new to me and this is how I feel about it. Now that I’ve went through the process of dying my hair and the color has now been in for a full day. First the packaging was very neat and you knew what you were working with. Once opened everything was in the box with easy to read instructions. I was super excited to see the dye bottle was a twist off top. Usually I have to cut the tip of the dye bottle in the boxes dye that I normally use. The dye mixed after a few hard shakes, but once I poured into my hair I could see that it didn’t mix all the way so had to give a bit more hard shakes to get it to fully mix. The liquid itself was runny, I like my hair dye a bit less runny. The smell of it was not too powering, and once on the head and scalp it did burn a bit while I sat to catch my hair. The washout was nice and not messy. A few rinses and it came out clear. The product came with a very nice sized conditioner, that has left my hair super soft. The conditioner had a very nice smell. It reminded me of tropical fruit. My hair still smells like it, and I work all day. All my hair caught the color and came out great. I would recommend trying this brand if you have it within reach. I like thst there is no amonia in this formula and it covers grey hairs nicely. One thing I do find though is that it seems to really dry out my hair and then I can't get a hairbrush through it easily even after using the conditioner included. It takes almost a month for my hair to feel normal afterwards. I have used this brand for at least 10 years and I find they tend to dye your hair darker at first snd then the hair color tends to lighten up after about 4 weeks I find.Emily

This hair colorant is very gentle and no harsh reaction on my scalp nor hair that looks like a scarecrow after using it. The Sandy Blonde, in particular, colors my roots perfectly and grows out beautifully to a high-lighted look that people comment on all the time. This box is great to dye your hair red if you have dark hair. It comes with two different tubes. Bigger one comes out like a cream and its white ish, then the smaller tube is the actual “dye” or ink lol. It’s labeled as “copper intensifier” or something like that. I was so indecisive to use it but it’s literally needed, because the bigger dye is just white. So you mix them together to get the red. I only bought one because I mixed it with two magentas to get my ideal red lolAmerica

The product itself is great when you receive the correct coloring packet. I give the product 5 stars. The vendor gets a 1. My daughter has used it many times purchased elsewhere. Her friend didn't look at the label and used it on my daughters bright red hair. It was not red it was copper. I asked for a replacement and the company wanted pictures of the box, contents and packing slip. I don't have a packing slip so sent a screen shot of my on-line order form which clearly states the product was shipped to me by them. They keep sending me the same letter and I keep sending them the same pictures. 4 times I have sent pictures. I will not order from this company ever again.Jane

I never used this product before and I’m so impressed with the result. The color is so bright and perfect I’m in love of the color. I use two tubes to color my hair because I have a lot of hair and is kind of long, and yes guys I cut off my hair too is not that long as it was but is not too short too. Have been dying my grey roots every 3-4 weeks for about 10 years now and nice n easy in 6N (half a box) had been my drug of choice up to now. Few formula changes later and am ready to try something different. I like that I can easily measure out what I need to use as both are liquid and mixed in a 1:1 ratio. I love that there is no overpowering odour striking as soon as mixing happens although slightly unnerving that this mixes into a plastic-like gel with no other odour?(Not sure how natural it is?) It is odd but you do get used to it, just don’t get lulled into a false sense of security and make sure you take usual precautions to clean up any spillages etc as it does stain quickly as with any other dyes. Colour-wise is about equivalent to nice n easy one and covers grey well but does seem to fade quite quickly so have just started adding a couple of capfuls of 5N to half bottle 6N when applying to roots then rest of 6N for last 5 mins on rest of hair. Bought few boxes in a recent deal so got really good price – making it more on par with other hair dyes.DancingDonnaDee

This is a lovely hair colouring product: easy to use and great colour results. The smell is, not unpleasant, just different. My only criticism would be that using it on my level 7/8 hair, I used 8A, there isnt enough ash in it to counteract the orange undertone that kicks up when you lighten in that mid blonde range, so it looks a bit warmer than I would have liked. Toning shampoo (blue) helps. It will probably get cooler on my second use when I retouch my roots. It looked lovely on the lighter parts of my hair though so my advice would be to use it if your hair is lighter than a level 8, but be prepared for your colour to be warmer than ash if its darker. The hair mask thats included has a, again not unpleasant, smell to it thats different, but gives lovely, shiny results. I will be using this colour product again and would recommend it.aunty_deedee
