20 Best Hair Gel For African American Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

This is the product that I have been looking for for the longest time! If you have curly hair, this is a must have. Here is how you use it, after detangling your hair, and a generous amount to your hair. If you add too much your hair won’t look super curly. After that just bunch your hair together to make it look curly. My hair looks so gorgeous when using this product. My family uses it as well. Maybe I came in with too high of hopes. Orrr maybe I just used to much. Either way, it left my hair greasy looking, weighed down, and it was obvious something was in my hair. After a year of locs- I combed them out. Usually I see a lot of product build up when I take out my locs, however after exclusively using this for a year, there wasn't much at all. I have also used this for a two-strand twist and it worked well. Was not heavy and oily and my hair was very flexible and pliable. The Good: I've been using this stuff for a few years now, I really enjoy the way it makes my hair feel after I use it. My hair is naturally very curly, yet it's on the finer side and also become very frizzy especially from the natural elements (rain, humidity, etc). I use this product on days when I don't feel like styling my hair but I still want my natural curls to come out looking like their fresh, nice and tamed. This product is fantastic because it does not dry down crunchy whatsoever and the gel feels very light-weight on the hair, which is great because out mousse/gel products tend to weigh down fine hair and can be easily overdone. I use this both on wet and dry hair depending on what stage of getting ready I am at during that time. I find it has the best effect on damp hair. I do not use this in my roots, I mostly apply it to the bottom 70% of my hair and if applying wet, I will also brush out my hair with it in. When applying dry I simply "scrunch" it and smooth it through my hair and it really helps bring about a lovely ooomph to my natural curls. It also helps with frizziness and instantly smooths out my hair, I've reached for this many times during humid days because it really helps my curls not frizz up in the future. I start smaller and apply more as needed. I found that I don't need a whole bunch of product to make this work well and I'd rather apply more later than apply too much all at once. The Bad: Oh boy is this formula STICKY and SLIMY. Honestly this is a very unique feeling gel during application that I have not experienced in other products and I know that I certainly cannot wait to wash it off of my hands after using it. The packaging could also be better as the formula sticks to the top of the tube and creates a dried "slime" and the cap is easily snappable due to the very thin plastic attaching it to the bottle. Really nice gel, I use it for scrunching and for refreshing my curls. I’d say it’s light hold – it does dry to a light cast but easy to scrunch out and helps with definition. Thin consistency so it’s easy to distribute and it’s great for curl glazing. Works really well with the Amika curl corps defining cream. I have thick 2c low porosity curls for reference.Carrie

I want to do an honest review of this product even if I saw it on Instagram so much. First of all, I think you have to know what works on your hair and this is good for low porosity hair because it doesn’t contain protein, or at least in a very low dosage. It’s holes to her very much, but at the same time in my hair, it feels like he doesn’t have a hold strong. It’s leaves my hair and my curls. Perfect for at least five minutes and then my hair became crazy and greasy. I don’t think this is a problem of this product at all but in my hair, it works like that I still think that the composition and the quality of this product is great. I really think you have to try it and decide that’s if you have low porosity hair I recommend it. This is a fantastic hair gel for curly hair (or any other hair too, I suppose). It only takes the smallest little amount and is super thick, so I mix it in the palm of my hand with a little water to help it disperse easier throughout the hair and go farther. When my hair is more dry, this needs some moisturizing help, so I will put 3 drops of jojoba oil in my palm and then the little dab of this gel, and mix it around (with or without extra water) before applying. The jojoba oil does a fantastic job of moisturizing my hair without the slightest bit of grease.iHerb Customer

I was looking for a gel that I can use for my curly hair that wont leave my hair feeling crunchy or weigh my curls down or the worst leaving me looking greasy! For reference, I have thin wavy/curly hair that tends to suffer and frizz in humid weather. This product ticks all the boxes. I usually use this on damp hair after applying my leave in. I use a small dime sized amount. Then I use a cotton tshirt and keep scrunching my curls until its almost dry. I am pretty brand loyal when it comes to my haircare, but every now and again if a product is amazing enough from another line , I will cheat on my usual and dip into the other line for that product. This is one of them The Moroccan Oil Treatment oil, which I feel is their most popular product that lead the way for this brand I think lol yes it is expensive, yes I get it cheaper because I am a liscenced professional lol but, when it comes to these higher end hair products , usually,you get what you pay for. It is worth the expensive price tag. There are some expensive hair products that I feel are not worth it and are way too overpriced for what they actually do and I am always very honest in my reviews on hair care because I live and breathe hair , its my profession, its what I love and I love to help people achieve hair they love, so if that means being honest and saying hey this product isnt worth it or its crap OR hey , this is not a brand I retail at work BUT Ive used it and I love it and recommend it even if u need to buy it elsewhere and I dont really achieve much for myself, what I want to achieve is to educate people on hair hair products and what works for them . So I am always honest when clients ask me about Moroccan oil.. that no we dont carry it but it is something I love and use everyday.it gives my hair amazing shine, it makes it feel soft and silky and just glides on over those little split ends like they are there, it helps tame frizz and flyaways and its a treatment that actually is beneficial to your hair. The bottle is on the small side but a little goes a LONG way unless you want to look like you stuck your hair in some grease than by all means lol but seriously a tiny bit, rub in your palms and rub jtno your hair , focusing on the ends and midshaft scalp will just make u oily I have naturally curly hair that is prone to dryness, it gets frizzy , its thick. I use the regular Moroccan oil treatment but there is also a light for those with finer hair , more oily , sleek type ,thinner hair that this regular one might be a little heavy for. I also apply this to dry hairz over my midshaft and ends when I feel they could use a little TLC . If theyre looking a little dry maybe just a little bit of this run through it and it will make your hair feel all soft and loveable again. I like the smell, it isnt anything strong or overpowering. This is the only hair product I do use from Moroccan oil, I am sure they do have other good products but at that price point and already being happy with my current hair care routine, Ive never felt the need to try them and I feel that this product here is their Holy Grail so to speak, like the 1 amazing stand out product where they are at the top of their game. I really love using this stuff. I have for years. My original favorite was Chi Silk Infusions and I still like that stuff but I feel this does the job better. So basically youd use something like this for heat and uv protection as well as moisture and shine. Mostly I use it for getting some moisture back in my really parched, heat abused hair for a nice, healthy and naturally shiny look. Using products like that can go wrong really fast. You can cross the line into greasy mess from shiny tresses quick. You can do that with this too if you use too much but a lot of products do that no matter how little you use. This lasts forever because even with the thickest and driest hair needs only a dime size or less warmed between the palms and lightly rubbed through every layer from root to ends with finger tips open to get every strand focusing on the ends. Ive noticed that it gives me life back to my hair. It gives me that naturally healthy movement you just dont get with fried hair. With this and changing my hair habits I have come almost all the way back from totally broken hair to healthy hair thats a little dry and has split ends. And with my current issues it makes it look like I have none. Especially when I flat iron my hair with this as a heat protectant it almost seals the cuticle completely and keeps my hair looking super healthy until my next wash. I also use it randomly to add a touch of moisture back into my hair if its really dry. Or if my ends are getting bad between trims I use this and flat iron them to seal them and make them look healthy temporarily. It also smells amazing. I love the comforting and unique almost but not quite tropical scent. Its very unique and very feminine without being like a perfume. It makes my hair smell fresh and pretty and that scent lasts for a couple days. Overall it is a little expensive but it lasts a long time so it ends up costing almost the same as the drugstore over time because if does last so long. Its just more of an initial investment. A sephora employee told me this stuff actually is bad for your hair and dries it out but I dont think it would have gotten so famous if it wasnt so great for so many people. Maybe she just had a bad experience. It wouldnt have been the first time I had been given bad information by a Sephora employee but I just thought Id mention it. I totally recommend. But only buy from authorized retailers like salons or stores like sephora, macys, and other high end retailers or it will most likely be a fake.Anonymous

Lets just say, I love Morrocanoil and have for years the product has always been consistently the same until I tried the bottle from this seller.This does not smell or feel like MoroccanoilI love my normal Morrocanoil because its Lux, silky smooth and has a specific color and wonderful smell. This product was not any of those things it was tacky it stuck to my hands and didnt glide through my hair and made my hair feel rough. It had a nice smell but not the Moroccanoil scent.I still have some Moroccanoil from my last bottle and even the color is different.This new product is not good. Not sure if I just got an off bottle or what has happened.I read over the label and it said nothing about a new formula. All I can say is this is not the signature Morrocanoil and its not a good product. It feels like castoroil.I liked the price and thats why I ordered from this seller but next time I will just pay full price at the salon because I know what Im getting.It even wasnt in its signature box or had the same colored label so that makes me more curious.I couldnt find a way to contact the seller I went to the reorder page and the sellers name was different then this one. I'd been using Herbal Essences' 'set me up' styling gel for years and only purchased Garnier's styling gel because Herbal Essences is no longer making the particular gel I had been using, or for some reason, it simply is no longer available at a reasonable price. I have to say that Garnier's gel is far superior to Herbal Essences' gel. I have extremely short gray hair, and my morning routine consists of a one to two-minute blow dry, a quick brush through my hair, and an application of a small dollop of hair gel. After that, I never touch my hair for the rest of the day. Garnier's product is very light, nicely scented, and it stiffens my hair in place with a very natural look. There is absolutely no white flaking, and the amount required to hold my hair in place is about half what I used to use with the Herbal Essences gel. A dime-sized amount is completely adequate to ensure my hair doesn't move. I am far more satisfied with this gel than with the various ridiculously expensive gels my hair stylist uses on my hair when I go in for a haircut every six weeks. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product, and the inexpensive price can't be beat!harley.g

This acts like glue. I have long hair (just above waist) and I tried this because my husband uses it (short hair). I added a quarter size amount to damp hair, scrunched it a bit and let air dry. Nice wavy curls but midday I put my hair up into a messy bun (hair was barely damp). At the end of the day when I let my hair down it was all glued together. When I brushed out my hair it ripped and pulled. Awful. My hair is now damaged and completely frizzed out. I am getting it all cut off this weekend. BTW, I normally use the Curl Sculpt by the same maker and love it.Corrie

This is the only hair gel I use. I freak out if I’m out of it. I was traveling and had an early appointment and realized “one of us” didn’t pack it. I have very fluffy/fro-ey hair so I rely on it. It’s water based and light and had an impressive hold. It shakes out or fluffs out without flaking. An easy hair re-wet can help the water based formula reshape and get ya through the last few hours of the day if you need. I have heat damaged hair as you can see from the color on down. I’m still learning how to care for my natural curls and this product worked great. On wet hair the ginger smell is strong and the hair (damaged parts) were crunchy. My roots were nice and soft. My favorite this about this gel is how soft it makes my hair. It's very hydrating and conditioning to the hair, every time I use this my curls are very soft and bouncy. I have mixed it with several other leave in conditioners and creams, both from the same brand and from other brands, and I have found it mixes well with a few different products. It doesn't mix with everything, test it in your hands first, but I found a few good combos with this gel. It also gives my hair good shine, I really loved that. My wash n go's always lasted a few days with this gel. I wish it had a little more hold, I'd say this is like medium hold. It didn't give a strong cast, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Even without strong hold, it's still a great and dependable gel. It is a lighter gel, almost a cream gel, I like the consistency. I like the smell too, reminds me of ginger ale haha. Overall, it's a great gel with beneficial ingredients.Kathi N.

I'm a natural with 4a/4b hair that mainly does wash n goes. I wanted a gel to layer for hold that had better ingredients than eco and wetline. I planned to use this as a topper. I've experienced that this product offers great hold, it does not control frizz very well due to the light/watery consistency. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. This is not going to give you much definition alone. Use this for additional hold and control. Overall, I think I would purchase again and I'm interested in trying their strong hold gel.Jasmine

I love this product. After my leave-in I usually have a few tangles, but when I use this cream instead of my usual cream, it gave me the best slip and gets all the tangles out that my leave in did not attack, and I had no frizz. It cut my wash day in half. It used to take me an hour in a half to do my hair (tangles, ugh!), now it only takes 45 – 50 minutes. My curls were so hydrated and defined. I just love this product. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. My process is LCG, I have oil that I use after wash day, but I tell you with this cream, you really don't need it. I didn't. Curl Talk don't ever change the formula!Robbin-Lynn

I have type 3c/3b Hair so I am always needing a good hair gel. I do like the original gel in this curl talk line. It provides adequate hold. Once this gel was introduced, I knew I had to try it. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. It will be easier to work through the hair and wont leave a tangles mess. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. This hair product comes in a small tub, so you have plenty of product to use. My hair is color treated so curls are harder to achieve unless you have alot of hydration. After a shower, I combed by hair and then took a small amount (twice) and raked the product through my hair in a downward motion. I split up sections of my hair to get 100% coverage. Once applied, I used the tension method with a hairbrush to help create my curls. I then scrunched my hair all over and let it air dry. The key to keeping your hair unfrizzy is to NOT TOUCH IT after applying the product. Let it air dry fully or use a blow dryer. Once dried, my waves / curls were well defined. My hair was not crunchy and it felt light. I am pleased with the results, I am a fan of gel because of how strong it is but in the past this would make my hair look too hard and it would create flakes. This product does neither. Okay so where do I start.. First off let me say I’ve been looking for this product forever I just didn’t know that this was what I was looking for! Not only does this product hydrates and moisturize your hair but you can see it. My curls last all day and you can visibly see the hydration and moisture. It does not make your hair crunch which is so important when using gel products. My hair was very bouncy has a lot of body and I absolutely love this! I have naturally curly hair so I’m happy that I don’t have to look anymore. I can literally wet my hair apply a small amount of gel shake and go! A little goes along way! This Gel is the first I have come by that did not add a ton of water back to my hair which results in frizz for me. The first to keep my hair from frizzing. The first gel to not flake. It also still held up days later and I even added back some water and rescrunched it to see an no flaky gel appeared along with very defined crunchy curls that also remained flexible. I'm impressed. I used it on damp hair an I used a lot the first time to really test it an as you get in your hands the texture is thick and kind of tacky not that wet super slimey regular gel feel. It smells amazing and the best part is it doesn't have all those bad chemicals or alcohol in it. I will be buying more. Now I let my hair air dry an I'm not sure how it would do like in the winter when the environment has moisture in the air but it's perfect for dry weather. I used this in my daughters hair for a pageant. It left a great cast on her curls so I was able to SOTC and get it to be a lightweight soft “wave”. The judges all wrote on her score card that they loved her hair. I’m very happy with this purchase for the price! I would purchase again down the road but wish it had a slightly better smell to it. These days, it's almost impossible to find a truly "Firm" holding gel. Everything is in jars, which I hate due to the greasy feel and look, yet it's really tough to find a good gel that actually works well. I like to use gel as kind of a base for my style, meaning I comb it through my hair, blow dry it, and then use other products to finish it off. It gives my hair a memory shape that doesn't get messed up if the wind blows or I run my hands through it. Out of the bottle, this gel is quite thin, almost watery. It's still gel, but it's definitely not thick. Normally I take that as a bad sign, because watery gels usually have zero hold and you have to use a ton just to get them to work at all. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this gel holds quite well, despite it's appearance. The hold is extremely clean, and almost feels like you have nothing in your hair. You can run your hands through it and your fingers don't get any residue or stickiness on them. After blow-drying, I added a smaller amount of gel to my hair in order to give it more definition and shine, and mess things up a bit. I found that it held well again, and I finished it off with a couple bursts of hairspray. My hair held up pretty well for most of the day, and gave it a nice natural look that had a bit of shine to it. I was actually impressed. Now I use this for most days where I just want to look like a presentable person but don't have anywhere important to be. The clean hold really feels awesome, and it holds well enough to do the job. However, you are almost assuredly going to need hairspray with this gel, or else your hair won't hold up as great as you might like. Finally, it smells great and really compliments the shampoo and conditioner. The smell lasts all day long, and it's fairly strong. If you love the Aveda Pure-Fume smell, you'll love this gel. My hair stylists over the years have suggested a number of different hair styling products based upon a few demands: 1. It should not make my hair look flammable. 2. It should not make it uncomfortable to touch my hair. 3. It should make my hair bounce back into place after being blown by the wind. 4. It should hold my hair up from morning through the night. None of the suggested products ever worked. Then, one day, someone was handing out samples of this Aveda Men Pure-Performance Hold Gel on the subway platform in Manhattan. I figured, what the hell. I'm thinking about shaving my head anyway, so what's the worst that can happen. Well, I'm glad I gave it a shot, and I have since purchased a 5oz bottle. It fits all of the requirements outlined above. When rubbed in my hands, it foams up a bit, so it is easy to disperse evenly in my hair. Once in my hair, my hair remains style-able for a good 15-20 minutes, but won't move unless touched. At the end of those 15-20 minutes, the hair will blow in the wind naturally, is comfortable to run my hands through, and has only the same sheen it naturally has after shampooing and conditioning. When it is moved by the wind, etc. it sets back where I had styled it – perfectly – every time. I couldn't ask for more from a hair product. I have tried so many products to style my natural wavy hair. They all promised to hold and add body, but my hair always ended up "flat!" My stylist tried something different last visit…Aveda firm hold gel……and I believe this is going to work! I have body and style lasting for at least two days……had to buy my own. Doesn't take but a little to get the look you want. I have 2C, high density, coarse, porous, long hair. Since adding heavy highlights to blend the grays, my hair has been a dry, frizzy nightmare! I have read endless product reviews, watched countless You Tube Videos regarding care and products for my hair. I have purchased so many products that it is insane, and none fully managed to clump my curls/waves and provide humidity protection.
I use a leave in conditioner applied in the shower to soaking wet hair. I then use a curl primer. I scrunch these products into hair and micro plop to remove excess water. I then apply curl keeper just like gel, using praying hands method to coat each curl. I add more to the crown and smooth over waves. I then plop for 10-30 minutes depending on if I’m air drying or diffusing.
I actually prefer to air dry and this product allows that, though it takes hours to dry. Can form a slight cast which I actually love. Once fully dry any crunch is easily scrunched out. I NEVER have shine in my hair due to the coarse texture but with this my curls are defined and shiny. Best part is that even in high humidity this holds perfectly.
I cannot speak to 2nd or 3rd day hair as I haven’t been able to test this part yet.

I struggled with definition and really had to look for a product that defined my curls. I was buying pricey product thinking that it would define my curls but eventually I found out I could save money!! I love mixing this gel with leave in conditioner as another reviewer mentioned. I rake though shea moisture’s curl smoothie and follow up with this product. I end up diffusing my hair after. Do not sleep on this product!! It is affordable and helps bring the definition I wanted. Don’t Shrink is a CGM approved protein gel with olive oil, shea butters, and glycerin. Flax seed really helps my hair retain its curl shape, the large jar helped me explore different styling techniques to see what works best with my hair and the price helped me feel better about re-styling failed experiment days vs conserving pricy product; which let’s face it, there’s a lot of fails in the beginning for curlies lol. I tried it out with super long hair and also with a long bob reset chop and both had consistent results. I achieved really great definition with a hard hold, I still had frizz but I also know this is most likely user error since I’m always improving my routines. I clarify every wash so I’m not one to comment on build up. I really wanted to love it, but I found out mid tub that I prefer shrinkage while I train my curl type. Like many wash and go naturalistas who rock the teeny weeny fro, I have gone through a lot of products trying to find that ONE which does what I need. I have finally found Aunt Jackies and I'm thrilled. It is the holy grail! I have moisturized curls that pop, no dryness or flakiness, and the curls last for DAYS with minimal fuss. For daily maintenance, I just fill a spray bottle with water, jojoba oil and Aunt Jackies leave-in and spritz that mixture to refresh my curls. Best of all, the entire regimen isn't a sticker shock to my wallet yet contains all the good, clean ingredients more pricy natural gels have. Pretty cheap and works great and strong and takes hold well. I enjoy plus I have three little brothers so this product also works great in their hair. using warm water this product comes out well and doesn't take very long to rinse out. from my experience this product lasts long and using comb you can style it any way you desire. but when it dry's it looks like dandruff especially if you have black hair.angel.a

I have naturally curly hair. "Curly girls" know that gel is better than mousse any day. This is my favorite product to use for my hair. It's SO CHEAP I don't know if you could ever convince me that some expensive bottle of gel is going to do much better than this stuff, so I don't waste my money. Here's my routine. -Wash condition (make sure shampoo is sulfate free!) -Use tshirt to absorb excess water -Apply serum or argan oil to ends -Apply generous amount of gel eeeverywhere -Blow dry with DIFFUSER -Shake out curls to get rid of the "crunchy" feel And you're good to go for a couple days!kate.s

I've used this brand of styling gel for years. The newer products with higher numbers, don't seem to have better holding power than those with lower numbers. Perhaps they have changed the formula. #9 is rarely stocked in stores anymore. It works best on my fine hair which blows in the wind if I don't use it. You rub it into your hair after you shampoo while your hair is still wet. When your hair dries, the hair stays where you combed it until you run a comb or brush through it to take the stiffness out. It will last for about 2 days. It is water soluble and non-greasy. And it is also inexpensive. One bottle will last me more than a month. The squeezable bottle allows you to use every bit of it. I store it upside down to make dispensing easier.sumpngood

was def excited to try a hair gel complimentary from DevaCurl for my honest opinion that claims to be not crunchy. I'm always very skeptical about products that claim to work hair miracles because I've experienced many let downs.. One difference about this is it says to work it in while curls are soaking wet. I still did get a little frizz but nothing like with what i usually use. I would purchase this and recommend it to other curly people. I did take one star for the frizz but would be curious to see how it holds up in an environment that's isn't as humid as whereI live.Laura

Yes! Her hair is fly-away frizzy with light curls like mine, and I think she'll appreciate this as I do. Even when I unthinkingly put a cheap gel on first one day (that I usually layer on when my hair is dried), it came out great with the 2 products piggybacked! And the effect lasts a few days between washings. I just need to fluff it up with a pic, even teasing parts a bit (I'm THAT old!) then smoothing over and applying hairspray. I did like the previous formulation better; I s'ppose the company got shamed into changing it (due to a TV documentary). But this is a great product for my fine hair.joyce

I used to use the Arc Angel gel and always liked it. I switched to Ouidad, which works great, but if I leave Ouidad on my hair for too many days without washing it, my scalp gets itchy. I saw Deva had changed the formula so I gave it a try. The gel has a nice thick consistency and you don't need a lot, which is great, however, you don't get nearly the definition and shine you used to get with Arc Angel. At the end of the day my hair is frizzy, the next day it's really a mess. I'm going to go back to Ouidad and just try a different formula. If you were a fan of Arc Angel, prepare to be disappointed.Mary

I received this complimentary from #influenster for my honest opinion. First off let me tell you that this one is different from the gel. To me it's creamy but not too thick either. the first time I used it I didn't use as much product as the second. My hair didn't feel too stiff or dry it was pretty good but since I used less product I still had some frizz but not as much compared to not using any product. I didn't notice any flakes the first day but I washed my hair by the second day. For the second time I used more product and my hair got more stiff and it felt dry and way less frizz. I did the same as the first time and didn't wash it out and it was ok. I didn't like the texture and feeling of my hair but there was minimal flakes by the second day but starting by the 3rd day it was very flaky. I would consider using and buying this product and try different amounts of product but definitely wash it out by the second day.maria.m

I received this #freeproduct in exchange for a review. For reference I have waist-length frizzy wavy hair that I typically blow dry straight. I love my natural waves, but usually, they look too frizzy for my liking. I tried out this product by applying it and then wrapping my hair in a microfibre towel and then letting it air dry. It clumped my waves together nicely and had a little bit of crunch to scrunch out. Most gels weigh down my waves to the point that they get stretched straight. This product didn't do that and my waves held their shape. I did notice some frizz but nowhere near the amount that happens when I air dry with no product. It also made my hair smell great! I recommend this entire product line to fellow wavies!indie

I got the combo of Shea Moisture Papaya & Neroli Anti Frizz products to try from top box to give a review on how it is and everything and the first time I used it but I’ve said time and time again that Shea Moisture is a never fail product for curly hair. I can feel a little difference. The smell is amazing and not too strong and it's a medium smell. This shampoo is great on wash days in the mornings because it’s not harsh on the hair at all. My hair is still moisturized and actually looks a bit shinier. The packaging is sturdy and hard to break. You get a lot of product in one bottle so it will last at least two months. This conditioner does an excellent job on my natural hair. My curls have never been better since switching over to SheaMoisture.This is such a great conditioner. Helps with frizziness and conditions and smooths so well. Then the last is the gel which made my hair really soft and smooth. I have 2C to 3A hair, and typically in the winter it's a solid 2C, I lose curl. about 6 months ago I started a quest for a HG gel, after using mousse for literally 25 years (I'm 39). I wanted more hold. I was underwhelmed at all the deva gels – especially at the price point – I tried curl Smith, i also tried lower priced ones:Cantu, herbal essences, NYM Curl talk…. to name a few. and i either hated them, or found them mediocre at best. I had recently purchased a few more on my last ulta order, and came across this – and the gelee from biolage, and tried cocktailing them together, and WOW! I get amazing hold, a more uniform curl pattern, and a bit of body and shine after scrunching out the cast. Due to my schedule, i shower at night and sleep -carefully- on wet hair. the few pieces in the back, underside, of my hair that flatten I simply spray a bit of water on in the morning to SLIGHTLY dampen/reactivate the product, and give one scrunch, and they turn back into the same curls that I have everywhere else! I was really surprised at the bad reviews-at first- then upon reading them, understood. I wouldn't recommend this gel for "brushing thru straight hair" (or any gel probably), and it's medium in consistency, so you aren't going to get rock hard spiky glue like effects either. I'd imagine this is best for wavy/curly hair. the protein listed as one of the main ingredients is where you're going to get your definition from 🙂jenn1376

I see a lot of comments about it being runny, which has not been my experience in the 3 bottles I've purchased so far. it's always been your typical, medium/average consistency gel. I have fine to medium, mostly 3A curls (with a random 2C section), that's somewhat low density. I also live in FL, where humidity is very high, so I need to strong hold gel that has little or no glycerin in it. The protein in this really helps hold curl and keep out humidity. After using a small amount of curl cream, I then use biolage gelee. After that's scrunched in well, I take a small amount of this firm style gel and sort of glaze it over all the curls, being sure the ends are coated. Sometimes I scrunch again, very lightly, after applying this, but sometimes I glaze it over my hair and then leave alone, depending on my curls mood that particular day. lasting hold that "locks in" all the hard work I put into getting my curls to cooperate with me – about to order bottle # 4!jenn 1376

I'm in the military so I have to use product to keep my hair slicked back. I bought this product for the first time after wanting to switch from cheaper products like Tresemme because it would often start flaking. I thought a more expensive product would be better, but I was so wrong. The product is liquid and spills all over, especially if you don't close the lid all the way. It is not of gel consistency. The flakes are so much worse than any product I've ever tried. It dries and creates the tiniest flakes that are so hard to remove. I threw the bottle away before I could finish it.Sam

Tried this out for my 2-year-old son and I really like it! Has a great list of natural ingredients, many of them organic. Fragrance is very subtle and clean. It leaves a very flexible/touchable hold, not stiff or spikey. A bit pricey compared to other similar products but you are paying for quality ingredients, and I care about the ingredients my kids can be inadvertently ingesting through products like these so it's worth it for me. I did not like at all. It didn’t hold and is a bit greasy. I would not repurchase even if it was the last product like this one the shelf. I got this product to do a braided style as it was highly recommended on YouTube. It did nothing really on my type 4 hair. My braids and roots were fuzzy not long after installation. This has become my new go to product! I use this to do hairstyles like braids, pony tails. tame my edges and I absolutely love it! I do add a scarf ontop to flatten all of the little hairs and this product does not make your hair SUPER hard niether does it create flakes which is great for reapplying. Just got this delivery about 15 minutes ago. While I love the smell and the light hold of this product I am not too pleased with the minor condition of the jar itself. It came with the top sticker ripped, and the content was half full, although it appears that a good bit of it had transferred into the lid. However, this is unsatisfactory and I plan to return it and ask for a new jar because I am uncomfortable using this product, because I feel like someone else has already used it!Toni
