What a fun brand – this packaging is so retro! Even though it is not my go to product, I do enjoy it. I found mine in Marshalls, but other than that you can mainly buy it from Amazon making it harder to find. It does enhance your curly hair create nice texture without weighing your hair down. Easy to distribute and a little goes a long way. So if you can find it in store buy it, but I normally do drugstore having to order online is not always easy to do. They are both (my favorite) gel formula – allowing them to be intensely pigmented, yet still maintain a very soft smooth application. This product works really well if you want a gel with a strong hold! Its affordable and best if you want to get rid of fly aways for a nice sleek look. All you have to do is apply the gel to damp hair, brush the fly aways (go over it a couple times if you have thick hair), and then wrap a satin scarf around your hair for a bit. After this is done your hair will be nicely laid. It also works well for a range of curly/kinky hair types from 3a-4c and more. The only critique that I have is that it doesn't shine as much and for certain hairstyles, I want a nice shiny sleek look. What I usually do to compromise this is I'd use this gel for my edges and then the eco styler gel in the black container for my whole head to get the shine, sometimes I combine the two.halima.k

I think the Krystal gel is the best Eco Styler gel because it doesn’t flake or make your hair crunchy. This gel does provide curl definition however, I’m sure there are other products that will make my curls more defined. One of my complaints is that this gel provides no slip so it’s not a smooth process when you apply it to your hair. My other complaint is that it says it has “maximum hold” for all hair types but that is not true. I have mainly type 4a hair and this gel doesn’t hold or keep my hair in place very well. I absolutely LOVE and adore this gel! I have medium length 3B/medium porosity hair and this gel has been a total game changer for me! I've been doing the same hair routine for decades with ok curls that I could never leave down because they'd frizz after a few hours. A year ago I started experimenting and really doing research on what could work better for my hair. I have genetic hair loss and have lost a ton of density over the last five years and I'm trying improve and preserve what I have for as long as I still have it. I was always told my curls were "pretty," then I started using the Curl Defining Styling Soufflé after trialing another cream/gel from a different line of product and I got a ton more compliments on my curls and could leave it down for longer. After that trial, I tried this gel and oh my goodness, my curls are even more amazing! They don't feel stiff and scrunchy, they don't look like they are held with gel, but they hold for DAYS, not hours like before, but DAYS! I get compliments all the time on my curls now, even on day 3 between washes! My hair looks shinier without being greasy or stiff too. I can't say enough good things about this gel. I don't use it in the shower, when I tried it on fully wet hair, I had less curls and less volume, but that's just my hair. You'll need to play around with your curls to see what works for you. I comb my hair in the shower while I condition, lightly wrap my hair in a towel for a few minutes when I get out (no rubbing!), then put in my leave-in (Multi Tasking Conditioner) with prayer hands then put in this gel with prayer hands, do some gently scrunching and I'm good to go. I'm unorthodox and I go to bed with wet hair but lay my hair "up" on my pillow to dry and I get a ton more root volume and just have to scrunch and finger comb a bit of volume in in the morning and I'm good to go. Unfortunately, this stuff is awful. I originally purchased the blue one, but the smell of it makes me nauseous so I decided to try the orange. It smells better, but sadly that is the only thing going for it. I tried multiple times, styling both in shower and out and this formula is not for my hair. I had hoped the firmer hold would help my fine, tight spiral curls hold up better on day 2-3, maybe even 4. Instead the gel was as crunchy as crunchy can be. Even after scrunching it to break the cast, going outside in humidity or sweating from walking would make it react and get sticky all over my neck, and then crunchy again. Overnight my curls got flattened and the gel held them in the most awful pressed and messed up shapes. I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. What a mess.Bri

I have a fine hair texture and have some challenges getting my hair to look full. I usually apply a leave-in conditioner or cream before gel but I skipped that since I was trying this product first time and wanted to see what it did by itself. I sectioned my hair and I admit, I used more than a dime size per section. After I applied it using prayer hands, I brush it through using a flexi brush, then brush styled with my Denman brush. The only problem I encountered was it was difficult brush styling with the product in my hair as my hair was sticky. I will probably brush style then apply with soft prayer hands, then scrunch next time to see if that helps. Nevertheless, my curls starting popping while I was diffusing my hair. I'm not sure if it's because I only used one product, or if something about this one product helped, but my dry time was way quicker than normal to (which is great because it was about 85°F today). I went out and 2 people who see me all the time complimented my curls and that was a first. I only bought the travel size to try it, but I think this is one I'm going to repurchase a full size in. Oh, and I got great volume from it once I scrunched it out. The trick for me was not scrunching up to break the cast, but instead grabbing my hair in sections like little ponytails and massaging the hair together while I scrunched. Don’t Shrink is a CGM approved protein gel with olive oil, shea butters, and glycerin. Flax seed really helps my hair retain its curl shape, the large jar helped me explore different styling techniques to see what works best with my hair and the price helped me feel better about re-styling failed experiment days vs conserving pricy product; which let’s face it, there’s a lot of fails in the beginning for curlies lol. I tried it out with super long hair and also with a long bob reset chop and both had consistent results. I achieved really great definition with a hard hold, I still had frizz but I also know this is most likely user error since I’m always improving my routines. This has the texture of a cream more than a gel, but still has quite a bit of hold for a thinner product. I have 3B ish hair that is very easily weighed down when wet, and this did a great job of giving enough hold without being too heavy. I also liked that I could use a lot of it (to get the benefits of a creamier texture) without getting weighed down. I am looking forward to trying the rest of the line, as this was such a nice experience! First, I wouldn't call this product a gel. It's more of a cream gel, which should've been my first indication it wasn't going to work for me. Smell is good, product feels good. It provides a natural hold and my curls are very soft and touchable. However, I have high-porosity hair and need a product that forms a cast on my hair. This isn't it. was def excited to try a hair gel complimentary from DevaCurl for my honest opinion that claims to be not crunchy. I'm always very skeptical about products that claim to work hair miracles because I've experienced many let downs.. One difference about this is it says to work it in while curls are soaking wet. Yes! Her hair is fly-away frizzy with light curls like mine, and I think she'll appreciate this as I do. Even when I unthinkingly put a cheap gel on first one day (that I usually layer on when my hair is dried), it came out great with the 2 products piggybacked! And the effect lasts a few days between washings. I just need to fluff it up with a pic, even teasing parts a bit (I'm THAT old!) then smoothing over and applying hairspray. I used to use the Arc Angel gel and always liked it. I switched to Ouidad, which works great, but if I leave Ouidad on my hair for too many days without washing it, my scalp gets itchy. I saw Deva had changed the formula so I gave it a try. The gel has a nice thick consistency and you don't need a lot, which is great, however, you don't get nearly the definition and shine you used to get with Arc Angel. At the end of the day my hair is frizzy, the next day it's really a mess. I'm going to go back to Ouidad and just try a different formula. LOVE, Love, love it! I initially only bought the style cream, which was hard to distribute through wet hair and made it tacky. Then I noticed the style gel on the website and saw that it was a CREAM gel. Bought it, tried it on my wet hair after applying the leave in, then finished with the Jojoba oil blend and, "WOW!" my waves instantly popped and were elongated. My 2C/3A hair is transitioning and I chose not to do the "big chop", but whether I twist, braid, or bantu knot style, this gel provides superior slip and juicy moisture on wet hair and gives me an almost even wave pattern from root to end. It air dries soft (not glass hard like traditional gels) within a day, and makes my waves–even at the crown roots–feel like butter! I now only use the styling cream on dry hair when re-moisturizing and reactivating waves, as that works better for me. Very happy with my purchase so far. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm happy I gave this line a try. My last two washes, I give my hair a quick 5 min in a microfiber towel then spray the hydrating hair mist all over, followed by a quarter size of the leave-in conditioner, and then a quarter size of the curl gel. I let this air dry and I have SOFT, well formed, barely-frizzy waves. I would say, this definitely weighs down my curls a tad, as they're not as well-formed as I know they could be, but I am also not diffusing my hair and instead letting it air dry. My hair feels SOFT–I cannot stress this enough, as other products leave my hair feeling dry or crunchy, or both–and there is actual movement in my hair, which I rarely get. I know others mention the smell of the products is awful, but I have not had an issue. It's a very synthetic cucumber smell, but I find it quite faint. Well this product does not work well with oil. It turned into white balls all over my hair. It make my scalp itch and flaked really bad. This product is made with vegan ingredients and it has coconut water to help keep your hair in place, healthy, frizz free, scrunched to your desire, and most importantly controlled. I have fine wavy/curly hair that tends get frizzy and dry out sometimes and decided to give this a try after seeing other curly hair bloggers review it. Sadly this gel gives no cast and also gives very little definition hold. In even slighlty humid weather this means that your hair goes from lovely defined curls after diffusing to a big fluffy mess after a few hours. In the winter/early spring it wasn't quite so bad, but it took forever to feel dry. It doesn't leave my hair moisturized and also has a weird tacky feel soon after applying. I haven't tried other products in this line but will not be repurchasing. If at Target, you're better off trying the NYM curl gel, Aussie Instant Freeze or another product.S Smith

I received this product complimentary from Bumble and Bumble in exchange for my opinion. I loved this gel oil. I emulsified a small amount and raked through from near the crown through the length and then another small amount to the ends and scrunched. I loved the finished product after diffusing and just air drying. Both ways left my hair curly but not crunchy. My curls had definition, it wasnt frizzy and I was very suprised that I had so much volume as have long hair. I love that this product is silicone and petrolatum free. I’m not sure if this is the exact same one that I’m leaving the review on, but the one I’m using is specially Bumble and bumble’s “Bb. Curl Gel Pomade.” This works amazingly for me for setting and holding my 2a/2b waves immediately after having applied and scrunched with my Ecoslay Curl Defining Orange Marmalade Cream to wet hair. It’s made my waves last and stay defined for much longer after wash day than when I don’t use it. It also tames frizz and flyaways nicely and smells amazing. I just scrunch some into my hair upside down after having used my curl defining cream and let air dry. (For reference, I have fine yet thick density hair that frizzes easily now that I’m 30, and high-medium porosity.)melissa.m

I have been using Matrix Total Results Curl Please Super Defrizzer for years. Just apply to wet hair, form your curls with your fingers and let it slowly start to dry…… when your curls start to get a slight crunch to them (but your hair is still wet) throw your head forward and dry with a hairdryer and diffuser until dry. This product is fabulous for wavy and curly hair. The best time to use it is after you towel dry your clean and conditioned hair. You just need a nickel size dot, rub your hands together, and run your fingers throughout your hair covering every area. I like to scrunch my curls before I blow dry. I have tried them ALL from Quidad/devacurl/ curlsmith/ Matrix. I've used the cheap drugstore brands and the overpriced brands like Oribe and I have never found anything like this. You do have to make sure that you work it into your hair so there aren't any clumps. I apply it to literally soaking wet dripping hair in sections and then brush through it to really smooth it out and then twist my curls. after my whole head is done I scrunch with a microfiber and then I add more to my hands and scrunch through the ends to make sure the towel didn't pull the product off. The name of this product is a bit deceiving. If you're looking for a product to keep your wash and go hydrated, it's not the one. I'm echoing the experience of another review, the hold was soft (and some points even crispy) and my hair had lost it's moisture by the end of the day. The ingredient list for this product is impressive so I was surprised it didn't at least keep its moisture. Trying to figure how I'm going to use this product up, I used it after my leave-in before a braid out and it works really well! Even before taking the braids out my hair was looking and feeling ridiculously moisturised. Now being a curly girl I have searched far and wide to earth and beyond to find that special gel that accentuates and defines my curls, give a great hold, doestn feel sticky and when dried does not flake. This gel is unbelievable it has a very very light sweet citrus smell. Clear in colour and light in texture. I have used it in top of oil, cream and conditioner and it has blended well with all three. A little expensive for me but other than that this works pretty good. I have natural curls but because of how long my hair is the roots are pretty straight and then my hair curls from the middle to the ends. This product helps with getting the curls up higher towards my roots.alexis.p

I’ve been buying this for about 12 years now. The bottle has changed a bunch but thankfully they’ve never discontinued it because I don’t know what I’ll use if they do. It can leave your hair a tad crispy if you put it on while it’s too wet and air dry but I don’t care because this is the only curling spray I’ve found that actually creates and holds curl in my straight-wavy hair. The shorter it is, the better the curls are but I’ve used it from jaw length hair to Butt length hair and always get results. I am a huge fan of air drying and don’t own a diffuser so can’t comment on that but I bet it works wonders that way too.erin.e

So this by itself will not work alone . I suggest adding other John Frieda curl products with it. It does not cut it on its own. But I have tried my other products without it and it definitely ads some definition that it is actually a must to have. Now word of caution use this after using a hair oil while your hair is wet. If not your hair will feel horrible and your reset day will be sooner than normal.sabrina.a

This stuff is a lifesaver!!! My hair is uncontrollable, especially when it rains out when it's humid. This has been the only product that controls the frizz. I have tried several other brands, regardless of price and this is by far the only one that can do what it says. Try it!!! You won't be sorry.tina.r

The John Fredia gel is great. Doesn't leave my hair crunchy but defines my curls great. I scrunch my hair to get great curls and this works as a great help to get better defined curls. It's long lasting so you would definitely want to wash it out when your done with your hair style. Smells pretty good too!corinne.m
