20 Best Hair Gel For Dry Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl

I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m

I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

I am pretty brand loyal when it comes to my haircare, but every now and again if a product is amazing enough from another line , I will cheat on my usual and dip into the other line for that product. This is one of them The Moroccan Oil Treatment oil, which I feel is their most popular product that lead the way for this brand I think lol yes it is expensive, yes I get it cheaper because I am a liscenced professional lol but, when it comes to these higher end hair products , usually,you get what you pay for. It is worth the expensive price tag. There are some expensive hair products that I feel are not worth it and are way too overpriced for what they actually do and I am always very honest in my reviews on hair care because I live and breathe hair , its my profession, its what I love and I love to help people achieve hair they love, so if that means being honest and saying hey this product isnt worth it or its crap OR hey , this is not a brand I retail at work BUT Ive used it and I love it and recommend it even if u need to buy it elsewhere and I dont really achieve much for myself, what I want to achieve is to educate people on hair hair products and what works for them . So I am always honest when clients ask me about Moroccan oil.. that no we dont carry it but it is something I love and use everyday.it gives my hair amazing shine, it makes it feel soft and silky and just glides on over those little split ends like they are there, it helps tame frizz and flyaways and its a treatment that actually is beneficial to your hair. The bottle is on the small side but a little goes a LONG way unless you want to look like you stuck your hair in some grease than by all means lol but seriously a tiny bit, rub in your palms and rub jtno your hair , focusing on the ends and midshaft scalp will just make u oily I have naturally curly hair that is prone to dryness, it gets frizzy , its thick. I use the regular Moroccan oil treatment but there is also a light for those with finer hair , more oily , sleek type ,thinner hair that this regular one might be a little heavy for. I also apply this to dry hairz over my midshaft and ends when I feel they could use a little TLC . If theyre looking a little dry maybe just a little bit of this run through it and it will make your hair feel all soft and loveable again. I like the smell, it isnt anything strong or overpowering. This is the only hair product I do use from Moroccan oil, I am sure they do have other good products but at that price point and already being happy with my current hair care routine, Ive never felt the need to try them and I feel that this product here is their Holy Grail so to speak, like the 1 amazing stand out product where they are at the top of their game. I really love using this stuff. I have for years. My original favorite was Chi Silk Infusions and I still like that stuff but I feel this does the job better. So basically youd use something like this for heat and uv protection as well as moisture and shine. Mostly I use it for getting some moisture back in my really parched, heat abused hair for a nice, healthy and naturally shiny look. Using products like that can go wrong really fast. You can cross the line into greasy mess from shiny tresses quick. You can do that with this too if you use too much but a lot of products do that no matter how little you use. This lasts forever because even with the thickest and driest hair needs only a dime size or less warmed between the palms and lightly rubbed through every layer from root to ends with finger tips open to get every strand focusing on the ends. Ive noticed that it gives me life back to my hair. It gives me that naturally healthy movement you just dont get with fried hair. With this and changing my hair habits I have come almost all the way back from totally broken hair to healthy hair thats a little dry and has split ends. And with my current issues it makes it look like I have none. Especially when I flat iron my hair with this as a heat protectant it almost seals the cuticle completely and keeps my hair looking super healthy until my next wash. I also use it randomly to add a touch of moisture back into my hair if its really dry. Or if my ends are getting bad between trims I use this and flat iron them to seal them and make them look healthy temporarily. It also smells amazing. I love the comforting and unique almost but not quite tropical scent. Its very unique and very feminine without being like a perfume. It makes my hair smell fresh and pretty and that scent lasts for a couple days. Overall it is a little expensive but it lasts a long time so it ends up costing almost the same as the drugstore over time because if does last so long. Its just more of an initial investment. A sephora employee told me this stuff actually is bad for your hair and dries it out but I dont think it would have gotten so famous if it wasnt so great for so many people. Maybe she just had a bad experience. It wouldnt have been the first time I had been given bad information by a Sephora employee but I just thought Id mention it. I totally recommend. But only buy from authorized retailers like salons or stores like sephora, macys, and other high end retailers or it will most likely be a fake.Anonymous

Lets just say, I love Morrocanoil and have for years the product has always been consistently the same until I tried the bottle from this seller.This does not smell or feel like MoroccanoilI love my normal Morrocanoil because its Lux, silky smooth and has a specific color and wonderful smell. This product was not any of those things it was tacky it stuck to my hands and didnt glide through my hair and made my hair feel rough. It had a nice smell but not the Moroccanoil scent.I still have some Moroccanoil from my last bottle and even the color is different.This new product is not good. Not sure if I just got an off bottle or what has happened.I read over the label and it said nothing about a new formula. All I can say is this is not the signature Morrocanoil and its not a good product. It feels like castoroil.I liked the price and thats why I ordered from this seller but next time I will just pay full price at the salon because I know what Im getting.It even wasnt in its signature box or had the same colored label so that makes me more curious.I couldnt find a way to contact the seller I went to the reorder page and the sellers name was different then this one. The Good: I've been using this stuff for a few years now, I really enjoy the way it makes my hair feel after I use it. My hair is naturally very curly, yet it's on the finer side and also become very frizzy especially from the natural elements (rain, humidity, etc). I use this product on days when I don't feel like styling my hair but I still want my natural curls to come out looking like their fresh, nice and tamed. This product is fantastic because it does not dry down crunchy whatsoever and the gel feels very light-weight on the hair, which is great because out mousse/gel products tend to weigh down fine hair and can be easily overdone. I use this both on wet and dry hair depending on what stage of getting ready I am at during that time. I find it has the best effect on damp hair. I do not use this in my roots, I mostly apply it to the bottom 70% of my hair and if applying wet, I will also brush out my hair with it in. When applying dry I simply "scrunch" it and smooth it through my hair and it really helps bring about a lovely ooomph to my natural curls. It also helps with frizziness and instantly smooths out my hair, I've reached for this many times during humid days because it really helps my curls not frizz up in the future. I start smaller and apply more as needed. I found that I don't need a whole bunch of product to make this work well and I'd rather apply more later than apply too much all at once. The Bad: Oh boy is this formula STICKY and SLIMY. Honestly this is a very unique feeling gel during application that I have not experienced in other products and I know that I certainly cannot wait to wash it off of my hands after using it. The packaging could also be better as the formula sticks to the top of the tube and creates a dried "slime" and the cap is easily snappable due to the very thin plastic attaching it to the bottle. Really nice gel, I use it for scrunching and for refreshing my curls. I’d say it’s light hold – it does dry to a light cast but easy to scrunch out and helps with definition. Thin consistency so it’s easy to distribute and it’s great for curl glazing. Works really well with the Amika curl corps defining cream. I have thick 2c low porosity curls for reference.Carrie

I'd been using Herbal Essences' 'set me up' styling gel for years and only purchased Garnier's styling gel because Herbal Essences is no longer making the particular gel I had been using, or for some reason, it simply is no longer available at a reasonable price. I have to say that Garnier's gel is far superior to Herbal Essences' gel. I have extremely short gray hair, and my morning routine consists of a one to two-minute blow dry, a quick brush through my hair, and an application of a small dollop of hair gel. After that, I never touch my hair for the rest of the day. Garnier's product is very light, nicely scented, and it stiffens my hair in place with a very natural look. There is absolutely no white flaking, and the amount required to hold my hair in place is about half what I used to use with the Herbal Essences gel. A dime-sized amount is completely adequate to ensure my hair doesn't move. I am far more satisfied with this gel than with the various ridiculously expensive gels my hair stylist uses on my hair when I go in for a haircut every six weeks. This acts like glue. I have long hair (just above waist) and I tried this because my husband uses it (short hair). I added a quarter size amount to damp hair, scrunched it a bit and let air dry. Nice wavy curls but midday I put my hair up into a messy bun (hair was barely damp). At the end of the day when I let my hair down it was all glued together. When I brushed out my hair it ripped and pulled. Awful. My hair is now damaged and completely frizzed out. I am getting it all cut off this weekend. This is the only hair gel I use. I freak out if I’m out of it. I was traveling and had an early appointment and realized “one of us” didn’t pack it. I have very fluffy/fro-ey hair so I rely on it. It’s water based and light and had an impressive hold. It shakes out or fluffs out without flaking. An easy hair re-wet can help the water based formula reshape and get ya through the last few hours of the day if you need. After a year of locs- I combed them out. Usually I see a lot of product build up when I take out my locs, however after exclusively using this for a year, there wasn't much at all. I received this complimentary from #influenster for my honest opinion. First off let me tell you that this one is different from the gel. To me it's creamy but not too thick either. the first time I used it I didn't use as much product as the second. My hair didn't feel too stiff or dry it was pretty good but since I used less product I still had some frizz but not as much compared to not using any product. I didn't notice any flakes the first day but I washed my hair by the second day. For the second time I used more product and my hair got more stiff and it felt dry and way less frizz. I did the same as the first time and didn't wash it out and it was ok. I didn't like the texture and feeling of my hair but there was minimal flakes by the second day but starting by the 3rd day it was very flaky. I received this #freeproduct in exchange for a review. For reference I have waist-length frizzy wavy hair that I typically blow dry straight. I love my natural waves, but usually, they look too frizzy for my liking. I tried out this product by applying it and then wrapping my hair in a microfibre towel and then letting it air dry. It clumped my waves together nicely and had a little bit of crunch to scrunch out. Most gels weigh down my waves to the point that they get stretched straight. This product didn't do that and my waves held their shape. I did notice some frizz but nowhere near the amount that happens when I air dry with no product. It also made my hair smell great! I got the combo of Shea Moisture Papaya & Neroli Anti Frizz products to try from top box to give a review on how it is and everything and the first time I used it but I’ve said time and time again that Shea Moisture is a never fail product for curly hair. I can feel a little difference. The smell is amazing and not too strong and it's a medium smell. This shampoo is great on wash days in the mornings because it’s not harsh on the hair at all. My hair is still moisturized and actually looks a bit shinier. The packaging is sturdy and hard to break. You get a lot of product in one bottle so it will last at least two months. I bought this gel almost a year ago. I just started recently using it since I've cut my hair 3 weeks ago. It's in a pixie cut. I have heat damaged hair as you can see from the color on down. I’m still learning how to care for my natural curls and this product worked great. On wet hair the ginger smell is strong and the hair (damaged parts) were crunchy. My roots were nice and soft. My favorite this about this gel is how soft it makes my hair. It's very hydrating and conditioning to the hair, every time I use this my curls are very soft and bouncy. I have mixed it with several other leave in conditioners and creams, both from the same brand and from other brands, and I have found it mixes well with a few different products. It doesn't mix with everything, test it in your hands first, but I found a few good combos with this gel. It also gives my hair good shine, I really loved that. My wash n go's always lasted a few days with this gel. I wish it had a little more hold, I'd say this is like medium hold. It didn't give a strong cast, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Even without strong hold, it's still a great and dependable gel. I received this product complimentary from Bumble and Bumble in exchange for my opinion. I loved this gel oil. I emulsified a small amount and raked through from near the crown through the length and then another small amount to the ends and scrunched. I loved the finished product after diffusing and just air drying. Both ways left my hair curly but not crunchy. My curls had definition, it wasnt frizzy and I was very suprised that I had so much volume as have long hair. I love that this product is silicone and petrolatum free. I’m not sure if this is the exact same one that I’m leaving the review on, but the one I’m using is specially Bumble and bumble’s “Bb. Curl Gel Pomade.” This works amazingly for me for setting and holding my 2a/2b waves immediately after having applied and scrunched with my Ecoslay Curl Defining Orange Marmalade Cream to wet hair. It’s made my waves last and stay defined for much longer after wash day than when I don’t use it. It also tames frizz and flyaways nicely and smells amazing. I just scrunch some into my hair upside down after having used my curl defining cream and let air dry. (For reference, I have fine yet thick density hair that frizzes easily now that I’m 30, and high-medium porosity.)melissa.m

It looked like it was going to come out amazing the second time I used this when wet but when it was diffused and dried and I scrunched out the cast it was defined, but not as good as I expected given all the effort I put into it. I did not settle for mediocre results. I also noticed that when I put my hair up the wispy hairs around my face were all sticking out. The loreal invishold normal strength gel gives me much more superior results and I haven't had any of these problems with that product. What I like about it is the hold and the slickness it gives me. I like that it doesn’t dry out my hair like some other gels I’ve used abs still gives me the hold. This is the one and only gel that works for my hair!!!! What happened to it!?!?! I love layering this Gel after using Shea Moisture's 100% coconut oil Leave-in Treatment with Shea Moisture's Miracle Styler (different line) after my rinse-out conditioner. I LOVE the Keratin in the Leave-in and tiny bit of protein in this Gel as well! Tbh this line by Shea Moisture is perfection!!! Love the shampoo and conditioner in this line as well…no protein in those but a great moisturizing wash combo. On my "gentle clarify" washes (Soapbox Tea Tree shampoo + conditioner) I follow with Shea Moisture's Raw Shea Butter Deep Moisture Treatment as my deep condition. LOVE these combo of products!!! This review will be about the same as far the shampoo. On my very long thin wavy hair, this conditioner is just too heavy. I only apply conditioner from mid length to ends so I can avoid my scalp getting oily too fast. This conditioner does an okay job of taking frizz and it smells great so those are the positives. The negatives are just that, on thin hair, it is too heavy and makes my hair appear dirty the next day. I usually style my hair with mousse or gel before blow drying and I can’t even do that because my hair will look immediately dirty and stringy. I don’t mind using this system if I’m wearing my hair up and taking a break from heat styling. But because I wear my hair down all the time, it’s just not the best system for me personally. I’d recommend this shampoo and conditioner to someone with very dry or frizzy hair; but they would need to have nice dense thick hair to avoid dirty looking hair the next day.erin.g

With that information I am now able to order the right product for my hair and Mielle fits the bill. My hair loves this line of hair care. This butter leaves my hair super moisturized, soft and bouncy. I love it. My hair stays hydrated for the entire week with one application, placed in a protective style then tied with a silk cloth. I bought this gel almost a year ago. I just started recently using it since I've cut my hair 3 weeks ago. It's in a pixie cut. This gel has helped with the wet and wavy look as my hair is cut low in the back and sides. I am still getting the hang of .3 curling iron. I have natural waves and curls and this product accentuates it- not whitening, flaking, or residue, and you hair naturally goes back to it's natural texture after a few days. Hello! I usually use a combination of Mielle products for my granddaughter but this time I decided on Moisture RX products only due to being the change of seasons and her hair being a little more dry than normal. She is 13 and often styles her own hair and wants that , "moisturized", look as she says for her twist-outs etc. She is very happy as am I with the results especially trying the overnight conditioner for the first time. I'm a natural with 4a/4b hair that mainly does wash n goes. I wanted a gel to layer for hold that had better ingredients than eco and wetline. I planned to use this as a topper. I've experienced that this product offers great hold, it does not control frizz very well due to the light/watery consistency. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. This is not going to give you much definition alone. Use this for additional hold and control. Overall, I think I would purchase again and I'm interested in trying their strong hold gel.Jasmine

I love this product. After my leave-in I usually have a few tangles, but when I use this cream instead of my usual cream, it gave me the best slip and gets all the tangles out that my leave in did not attack, and I had no frizz. It cut my wash day in half. It used to take me an hour in a half to do my hair (tangles, ugh!), now it only takes 45 – 50 minutes. My curls were so hydrated and defined. I just love this product. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. My process is LCG, I have oil that I use after wash day, but I tell you with this cream, you really don't need it. I didn't. Curl Talk don't ever change the formula!Robbin-Lynn

I have type 3c/3b Hair so I am always needing a good hair gel. I do like the original gel in this curl talk line. It provides adequate hold. Once this gel was introduced, I knew I had to try it. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. It will be easier to work through the hair and wont leave a tangles mess. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. So far I am very happy with this hair gel, I have consistently good hair days when I use it. I comb a styling cream through my hair, then scrunch the gel in, and blow dry with a diffuser. It makes my hair very shiny and holds the curl really well while still being soft and giving me lots of volume. My second day hair still looks great too. Third day hair does start to get a little bit of frizzies, but I have never found anything that keeps those away for more than two days anyway. When I wash my hair the gel comes out easily and doesn't cause a lot of tangles. It's a little pricey but a great product.Laila

I found this on sale at Ulta for 3 for $25… It's the PERFECT finishing product for my thick, straight hair. I've tried a TON of styling creams, lotions, sprays, and pomades over the years, but they all made my hair look flat, greasy, stiff, or didn't have enough hold to keep baby hairs from sticking up. This helps give hair a little 2nd day texture without making it look dirty, doesn't weigh hair down at ALL, keeps flyaways and baby hairs at bay, and keeps split ends from looking… split! It also doesn't make my hair crunchymy hair is still soft and has movement. I've used it before putting on hot rollers and it helps hold the volume all day! I received this as a sample from Ulta with another purchase I had made. I have thin, fine hair and I use this product either with a curling iron or curlers . It says it has #3 hold and it does. I cannot tell you how very pleased I am. I have actually gone two days without styling my hair and it still looks good. This is unheard of for me. I have used very expensive products very inexpensive products and nothing works for me like the EIMI Pearl Styler Styling Gel. I might also mention that I live in a very humid area.chrissipoo

Have used this for years on my fine, white, spiky short hair. Applied to damp hair it can spike hair from 1.5 cm to 3 cm without any falling over. Spikes last all day. Gives a lovely shine with is often difficult with white hair. Love it.Janne C.

I bought this gel to tame my baby hairs/fly-aways and get a sleek and shine look from pulling back my hair. Didn't get that, a little too crunchy and the shine factor isn't there like I've seen from other products. It says firm hold 8 out of 10. I felt it was more 5 out of 10 after a few hours of wear. I've been using Joico 4 medium gel for many years. Just received my last order. The ad shows the old tube but I received a new updated tube which contains a different and much stronger fragrance. I'm allergic to scents but I was able to use the old Joico because the fragrance was minimal and smelled more like a herbal. The new scent is horrible! I cannot use it. I also paid $14.99 two weeks ago and now it is listed at $13.05. I guess I should be impressed that it went down instead of up.Disappointed

I have been using this gel for years. Inhave curly hair n works great. Jyst use a small amount if tou use to much will not work great n will feel greasy. I have short hair. You may havebto try a few times to find the right amount that works for your hairCrow

I really like this product that I discovered randomly. The hold is good, and doesnt stay sticky. Like the smell too. But the packaging is terrible the rotating cap with dispenser allows small amounts to remain on it after closing and leaving sticky stains everywhere.Anonymous
