For the past year or so, my hair has returned to a state of greasy last seen when I was a teenager decades ago. Add in that I have hyper sensitive skin and scalp and it has been a frustrating battle. I would no sooner wash my hair and the minute it was dry I could feel the grease. Trying sensitive shampoos meant to degrease only led to a dry itchy scalp and persistent grease. I recalled using Paul Mitchel products in my twenties. I was both excited and apprehensive because my skin is much more sensitive these days. The shampoos, as far as I could tell, did not specify sensitivity. I choose what I felt would balance my hair since that is what the description stated. The conditioner being Super Skinny. I used just the smallest amounts to start as a means to test for any reactions. No reactions and my hair has not felt this clean and itch less in so long. While I may not have work life balance, I have finally found products that balance my hair and keep the itch away.Balanced One

The Good: I've been using this stuff for a few years now, I really enjoy the way it makes my hair feel after I use it. My hair is naturally very curly, yet it's on the finer side and also become very frizzy especially from the natural elements (rain, humidity, etc). I use this product on days when I don't feel like styling my hair but I still want my natural curls to come out looking like their fresh, nice and tamed. This product is fantastic because it does not dry down crunchy whatsoever and the gel feels very light-weight on the hair, which is great because out mousse/gel products tend to weigh down fine hair and can be easily overdone. I use this both on wet and dry hair depending on what stage of getting ready I am at during that time. I find it has the best effect on damp hair. I do not use this in my roots, I mostly apply it to the bottom 70% of my hair and if applying wet, I will also brush out my hair with it in. When applying dry I simply "scrunch" it and smooth it through my hair and it really helps bring about a lovely ooomph to my natural curls. It also helps with frizziness and instantly smooths out my hair, I've reached for this many times during humid days because it really helps my curls not frizz up in the future. I start smaller and apply more as needed. I found that I don't need a whole bunch of product to make this work well and I'd rather apply more later than apply too much all at once. The Bad: Oh boy is this formula STICKY and SLIMY. Honestly this is a very unique feeling gel during application that I have not experienced in other products and I know that I certainly cannot wait to wash it off of my hands after using it. The packaging could also be better as the formula sticks to the top of the tube and creates a dried "slime" and the cap is easily snappable due to the very thin plastic attaching it to the bottle. Really nice gel, I use it for scrunching and for refreshing my curls. I’d say it’s light hold – it does dry to a light cast but easy to scrunch out and helps with definition. Thin consistency so it’s easy to distribute and it’s great for curl glazing. Works really well with the Amika curl corps defining cream. I have thick 2c low porosity curls for reference.Carrie

i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl

I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m

I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

I found this on sale at Ulta for 3 for $25… It's the PERFECT finishing product for my thick, straight hair. I've tried a TON of styling creams, lotions, sprays, and pomades over the years, but they all made my hair look flat, greasy, stiff, or didn't have enough hold to keep baby hairs from sticking up. This helps give hair a little 2nd day texture without making it look dirty, doesn't weigh hair down at ALL, keeps flyaways and baby hairs at bay, and keeps split ends from looking… split! It also doesn't make my hair crunchymy hair is still soft and has movement. I've used it before putting on hot rollers and it helps hold the volume all day! I received this as a sample from Ulta with another purchase I had made. I have thin, fine hair and I use this product either with a curling iron or curlers . It says it has #3 hold and it does. I cannot tell you how very pleased I am. I have actually gone two days without styling my hair and it still looks good. This is unheard of for me. I have used very expensive products very inexpensive products and nothing works for me like the EIMI Pearl Styler Styling Gel. I might also mention that I live in a very humid area.chrissipoo

Have used this for years on my fine, white, spiky short hair. Applied to damp hair it can spike hair from 1.5 cm to 3 cm without any falling over. Spikes last all day. Gives a lovely shine with is often difficult with white hair. Love it.Janne C.

I really like this product that I discovered randomly. The hold is good, and doesnt stay sticky. Like the smell too. But the packaging is terrible the rotating cap with dispenser allows small amounts to remain on it after closing and leaving sticky stains everywhere.Anonymous

I'd been using Herbal Essences' 'set me up' styling gel for years and only purchased Garnier's styling gel because Herbal Essences is no longer making the particular gel I had been using, or for some reason, it simply is no longer available at a reasonable price. I have to say that Garnier's gel is far superior to Herbal Essences' gel. I have extremely short gray hair, and my morning routine consists of a one to two-minute blow dry, a quick brush through my hair, and an application of a small dollop of hair gel. After that, I never touch my hair for the rest of the day. Garnier's product is very light, nicely scented, and it stiffens my hair in place with a very natural look. There is absolutely no white flaking, and the amount required to hold my hair in place is about half what I used to use with the Herbal Essences gel. A dime-sized amount is completely adequate to ensure my hair doesn't move. I am far more satisfied with this gel than with the various ridiculously expensive gels my hair stylist uses on my hair when I go in for a haircut every six weeks. This acts like glue. I have long hair (just above waist) and I tried this because my husband uses it (short hair). I added a quarter size amount to damp hair, scrunched it a bit and let air dry. Nice wavy curls but midday I put my hair up into a messy bun (hair was barely damp). At the end of the day when I let my hair down it was all glued together. When I brushed out my hair it ripped and pulled. Awful. My hair is now damaged and completely frizzed out. I am getting it all cut off this weekend. This is the only hair gel I use. I freak out if I’m out of it. I was traveling and had an early appointment and realized “one of us” didn’t pack it. I have very fluffy/fro-ey hair so I rely on it. It’s water based and light and had an impressive hold. It shakes out or fluffs out without flaking. An easy hair re-wet can help the water based formula reshape and get ya through the last few hours of the day if you need. I have heat damaged hair as you can see from the color on down. I’m still learning how to care for my natural curls and this product worked great. On wet hair the ginger smell is strong and the hair (damaged parts) were crunchy. My roots were nice and soft. My favorite this about this gel is how soft it makes my hair. It's very hydrating and conditioning to the hair, every time I use this my curls are very soft and bouncy. I have mixed it with several other leave in conditioners and creams, both from the same brand and from other brands, and I have found it mixes well with a few different products. It doesn't mix with everything, test it in your hands first, but I found a few good combos with this gel. It also gives my hair good shine, I really loved that. My wash n go's always lasted a few days with this gel. I wish it had a little more hold, I'd say this is like medium hold. It didn't give a strong cast, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Even without strong hold, it's still a great and dependable gel. I'm a natural with 4a/4b hair that mainly does wash n goes. I wanted a gel to layer for hold that had better ingredients than eco and wetline. I planned to use this as a topper. I've experienced that this product offers great hold, it does not control frizz very well due to the light/watery consistency. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. This is not going to give you much definition alone. Use this for additional hold and control. Overall, I think I would purchase again and I'm interested in trying their strong hold gel.Jasmine

It cut my wash day in half. It used to take me an hour in a half to do my hair (tangles, ugh!), now it only takes 45 – 50 minutes. My curls were so hydrated and defined. I just love this product. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. I bought this gel to tame my baby hairs/fly-aways and get a sleek and shine look from pulling back my hair. Didn't get that, a little too crunchy and the shine factor isn't there like I've seen from other products. It says firm hold 8 out of 10. I felt it was more 5 out of 10 after a few hours of wear. I've been using Joico 4 medium gel for many years. Just received my last order. The ad shows the old tube but I received a new updated tube which contains a different and much stronger fragrance. I'm allergic to scents but I was able to use the old Joico because the fragrance was minimal and smelled more like a herbal. The new scent is horrible! I cannot use it. I also paid $14.99 two weeks ago and now it is listed at $13.05. I guess I should be impressed that it went down instead of up.Disappointed

I am going to give it a 3 since I couldn’t give it a 3.5. The Defining Gel has a great non-sticky appeal. Neither my hands nor my hair felt heavy, coated or sticky but it did have some “crunchy” pieces. I don’t like that crunchy gel feeling in my hair. My hair wasn’t curly after using the diffuser as it is with another product I use. It was just barely waves. I will try it again with a different diffuser and see what happens. My hair is long and one length so I was expecting soft waves not what I got. But I am getting my hair cut in a few weeks so I’ll update with that change.tilcia.f

I love this gel (I have type 4b hair). This give me the hold I need while not being too crunchy. It gives my hair shine and sleeks it down well. I usually use this gel or the ecostyler Krystal. The container says that it’s a level 10 hold but it feels more like a level 8 to me. I don’t mind though. It does not dry out hair. I would recommend giving this gel a try. If you have type 4c hair, it may not be ideal for a sleek ponytail. But it’s great for a wash n go. The price is okay as well.geena.c

The jacket looks lovely, and the quality is great. However I looked like a bag of spanner’s in it, it is very oversized and I probably could have sized down. This curl cream would be great for you if you’re not looking to have too much hold in your hair. It’s thick, but it doesn’t create a very strong cast for me. As you can see, my hair is already frizzing at the roots and it’s not completely dry yet. There’s no cast to scrunch out. The pump is also really hard to use and only dispenses like a dime size of product with each pump, which means I need to pump twice just to get enough for one section of hair. It is very hydrating, so I can’t knock it down too much, but it is probably my least favorite ouidad product, which is saying a lot because I LOVE ouidad. I gave it three stars because it doesn’t really work that well with my curly hair. I just started used ouidad products so there’s a learning curve. I have coily and s shaped curls. It’s a blend of two different types of curls. The gel would work very well for someone whose hair is not coily like mine. I need something a bit different or stronger. I would say that in comparison to million other products that I have tried, it’s one of the better ones. It doesn’t make my hair feel crunchy which is great. I've struggled with finding products to tame my type 3B curls for as long as I can remember. I have tried mousse, leave-in conditioners, gels, and all kinds of creams. The product is a clear gel and you need only use a dime or quarter size amount depending on how thick/long your hair is. The product has a very natural, floral smell that doesn't overwhelm you. I use this product every day with my Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave In Conditioning Cream and they work extremely well together. This lightweight gel helps tame frizz while also letting the curls keep their natural shape without any crunchiness or residue. I have used this gel for over a year now and it has become a staple in my hair-care products. The product locks moisture in your hair and leaves it hydrated all day. A bottle of this product lasts me about three-four months. This product really does it all when it comes to taming frizz and moisturizing curly hair, but that is to be expected given that the bottle is almost $30 for only 8.5 FL. OZ. When you think about it, this high price does get to be too expensive for a smaller bottle when you use this product on a daily basis, but I have yet to find any other products that work as well as this one does with my hair. I recommend this product to every curly-haired person I know! It has made styling my hair so much easier, hydrating and holding my curl all in one product so that I don't have to use multiple products to get the right mix of hydration and holding power.Susan

Got a sample in an Ipsy bag and HAD to find the full size! Makes my curls beautiful – separates them but doesnt ever make them crunchy! And second day after sleeping on them? Just spray with a spray bottle and scrunch. They come right back! Never going to use anything else, EVER!bella_lulu99

I have 2C, high density, coarse, porous, long hair. Since adding heavy highlights to blend the grays, my hair has been a dry, frizzy nightmare! I have read endless product reviews, watched countless You Tube Videos regarding care and products for my hair. I have purchased so many products that it is insane, and none fully managed to clump my curls/waves and provide humidity protection.
I use a leave in conditioner applied in the shower to soaking wet hair. I then use a curl primer. I scrunch these products into hair and micro plop to remove excess water. I then apply curl keeper just like gel, using praying hands method to coat each curl. I add more to the crown and smooth over waves. I then plop for 10-30 minutes depending on if I’m air drying or diffusing.
I actually prefer to air dry and this product allows that, though it takes hours to dry. Can form a slight cast which I actually love. Once fully dry any crunch is easily scrunched out. I NEVER have shine in my hair due to the coarse texture but with this my curls are defined and shiny. Best part is that even in high humidity this holds perfectly.
I cannot speak to 2nd or 3rd day hair as I haven’t been able to test this part yet.

This a light gel with a soft yet fitm hold leaving you with touchable curls. No crunch. Great scent. This gel is best suited for use on one product wash n go's…..meaning layer the gel on top of an oil only- no leave in. Most issues with flaking only occur with incompatible products or product lines. Definitely worth for the price. 18.5 ounces for under $5. Fairly clean ingredients. No parabens or petroleum. Will definitely repurchase. It's a new staple for me!Angela

I have dry, curly, long hair and this stuff works great for me. I comb it through with a wide tooth comb, let my hair air dry, and my hair looks great! Also, my hair isn't crunchy like with some gels but it takes the frizz away just the same. I am so glad I discovered this product.Joanne
