i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl

I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m

I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

I bought this stuff on sale a year or so ago. I blow dry my hair every time I wash it which is about every 4 to 6 days. It's thick and curly and unruly with breakage and split ends. So I blow dry and flat iron it then I have to flat iron it every day in between because the curls and frizz come back pretty quickly. So since i go as long as possible between washes since I'm mending the damage I caused my hair as a teen and young adult and trying to grow my hair out things can get a bit greasy and flat towards the last day or two before I've finally had enough. It never looks greasy because my hair is extremely dry and thick and the super oily never gets past the roots but it definitely flattens my hair and weighs it down at this point. And since I'm used to having a lot of volume except for those couple days it drives me crazy. So I thought I could use a volumizing product so I didn't have to damage my hair by teasing it and so it would last until the end of my wash. Well it was easy enough to put in my hair and on my roots. It took a bit of product to get it an inch or so down every bit of my roots so I felt like it was kind of wasteful since a little did not go a long way. I blow dried my hair like normal and flipped it upside down and just brought my roots straight up with a ceramic large round brush to help cement the volume and get it as high as possible. It actually weighed my hair down though and it got oily much quicker when I used this product. It literally didn't do a thing for my hair at all. Now maybe this would work for someone with really fine hair who wasn't using other products in conjunction. I don't know. But what I am sure of is that out of the few different times i used this with different tips and techniques that are supposed to give you the best results it never once worked for me. And because of that I can't recommend. The good things about it are all technical but it is part of the product so I counted it and rated it with these included. The packaging matches with the big, sexy hair motif of red and black with white lettering. It's very stylish and almost gives off a sexy vibe. The dispenser is like a lotion pump where you just push down and out comes the product and you continue that until you have your desired amount. It doesn't let too much or too little out so getting the right amount is simple and precise. It's a light weight gel type consistency. Not too heavy or too light. It's clear so it's great for all hair colors and types. It smells great. Very pretty, fresh and feminine. Also it has a great amount of product in it for the price so it will last a while. I'd been using Herbal Essences' 'set me up' styling gel for years and only purchased Garnier's styling gel because Herbal Essences is no longer making the particular gel I had been using, or for some reason, it simply is no longer available at a reasonable price. I have to say that Garnier's gel is far superior to Herbal Essences' gel. I have extremely short gray hair, and my morning routine consists of a one to two-minute blow dry, a quick brush through my hair, and an application of a small dollop of hair gel. After that, I never touch my hair for the rest of the day. Garnier's product is very light, nicely scented, and it stiffens my hair in place with a very natural look. There is absolutely no white flaking, and the amount required to hold my hair in place is about half what I used to use with the Herbal Essences gel. A dime-sized amount is completely adequate to ensure my hair doesn't move. I am far more satisfied with this gel than with the various ridiculously expensive gels my hair stylist uses on my hair when I go in for a haircut every six weeks. This acts like glue. I have long hair (just above waist) and I tried this because my husband uses it (short hair). I added a quarter size amount to damp hair, scrunched it a bit and let air dry. Nice wavy curls but midday I put my hair up into a messy bun (hair was barely damp). At the end of the day when I let my hair down it was all glued together. When I brushed out my hair it ripped and pulled. Awful. My hair is now damaged and completely frizzed out. I am getting it all cut off this weekend. This is the only hair gel I use. I freak out if I’m out of it. I was traveling and had an early appointment and realized “one of us” didn’t pack it. I have very fluffy/fro-ey hair so I rely on it. It’s water based and light and had an impressive hold. It shakes out or fluffs out without flaking. An easy hair re-wet can help the water based formula reshape and get ya through the last few hours of the day if you need. I have 2C to 3A hair, and typically in the winter it's a solid 2C, I lose curl. about 6 months ago I started a quest for a HG gel, after using mousse for literally 25 years (I'm 39). I wanted more hold. I was underwhelmed at all the deva gels – especially at the price point – I tried curl Smith, i also tried lower priced ones:Cantu, herbal essences, NYM Curl talk…. to name a few. and i either hated them, or found them mediocre at best. I had recently purchased a few more on my last ulta order, and came across this – and the gelee from biolage, and tried cocktailing them together, and WOW! I get amazing hold, a more uniform curl pattern, and a bit of body and shine after scrunching out the cast. Due to my schedule, i shower at night and sleep -carefully- on wet hair. the few pieces in the back, underside, of my hair that flatten I simply spray a bit of water on in the morning to SLIGHTLY dampen/reactivate the product, and give one scrunch, and they turn back into the same curls that I have everywhere else! I was really surprised at the bad reviews-at first- then upon reading them, understood. I wouldn't recommend this gel for "brushing thru straight hair" (or any gel probably), and it's medium in consistency, so you aren't going to get rock hard spiky glue like effects either. I see a lot of comments about it being runny, which has not been my experience in the 3 bottles I've purchased so far. it's always been your typical, medium/average consistency gel. I have fine to medium, mostly 3A curls (with a random 2C section), that's somewhat low density. I also live in FL, where humidity is very high, so I need to strong hold gel that has little or no glycerin in it. The protein in this really helps hold curl and keep out humidity. After using a small amount of curl cream, I then use biolage gelee. After that's scrunched in well, I take a small amount of this firm style gel and sort of glaze it over all the curls, being sure the ends are coated. I'm in the military so I have to use product to keep my hair slicked back. I bought this product for the first time after wanting to switch from cheaper products like Tresemme because it would often start flaking. I thought a more expensive product would be better, but I was so wrong. The product is liquid and spills all over, especially if you don't close the lid all the way. It is not of gel consistency. The flakes are so much worse than any product I've ever tried. It dries and creates the tiniest flakes that are so hard to remove. I threw the bottle away before I could finish it.Sam

My favorite this about this gel is how soft it makes my hair. It's very hydrating and conditioning to the hair, every time I use this my curls are very soft and bouncy. I have mixed it with several other leave in conditioners and creams, both from the same brand and from other brands, and I have found it mixes well with a few different products. It doesn't mix with everything, test it in your hands first, but I found a few good combos with this gel. It also gives my hair good shine, I really loved that. My wash n go's always lasted a few days with this gel. I wish it had a little more hold, I'd say this is like medium hold. It didn't give a strong cast, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Even without strong hold, it's still a great and dependable gel. If you're looking for a hair gel that has a super-duper, concrete-like firm hold…this is it. It's also got a pleasant, non-offensive, masculine scent. It's easy to spread throughout the hair (unlike some of the other "ultra firm" hold hair gels) and you can easily thin out the gel with some water. However, it does take about an hour for this gel to dry at ambient room temperature, once applied. Just note that if you're looking to transfer the gel into another bottle (like a travel bottle), the scent disappears quickly and it starts to take on a weird consistency. Keep it in the original bottle or buy a smaller bottle size. And if you're keeping it on your bathroom counter, look into buying a pump. Its smooth and rich in texture and leaves your hair a little crunchy while firmly holding hair in place.. but it's just to expensive. It's like most high end hair styling products. It does what it says it should. I use a pea size blob, a bit of water to emulsify and run through my hair prior to going in with a hair-dryer. Great volume for a high pony tail or any up-do. My son uses it to slick back his hair. Pure gel, no water. There's the usual tacky residue on your hands, brushes and combs. This gel is great for wash n gos, updos, and laying edges. My wash n gos come out super defined and I get big hair as my style gets old. Then I’ll use this gel to slick up my hair into a puff/bun. I’ve tried many edge controls and none of them last past 2 hours then my edges would start to curl up. But with this gel, I apply it and lay my edges, tie a satin scarf around them, set for 10 minutes, and I’m good to go for the whole day. I'm a natural with 4a/4b hair that mainly does wash n goes. I wanted a gel to layer for hold that had better ingredients than eco and wetline. I planned to use this as a topper. I've experienced that this product offers great hold, it does not control frizz very well due to the light/watery consistency. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. This is not going to give you much definition alone. Use this for additional hold and control. Overall, I think I would purchase again and I'm interested in trying their strong hold gel.Jasmine

I love this product. After my leave-in I usually have a few tangles, but when I use this cream instead of my usual cream, it gave me the best slip and gets all the tangles out that my leave in did not attack, and I had no frizz. It cut my wash day in half. It used to take me an hour in a half to do my hair (tangles, ugh!), now it only takes 45 – 50 minutes. My curls were so hydrated and defined. I just love this product. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. I have type 3c/3b Hair so I am always needing a good hair gel. I do like the original gel in this curl talk line. It provides adequate hold. Once this gel was introduced, I knew I had to try it. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. It will be easier to work through the hair and wont leave a tangles mess. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. This thickening spray is amazing! I have not tried this as a heat protectant spray, I’ve only used this as a hairspray for my curls. I can’t attest to whether this protects as a heat protectant spray, or whether this thickens hair. I’ve worn my hair curly and I already have thick hair! I will say this clumped my curls beautifully!!! The smell is amazing, I got compliments every-time I’ve used this spray. I plan on using this as a heat protectant spray in the future. Just got this a couple days ago from #sephora couldn’t hardly wait to try it. I used a generous amount, in sections, on my damp hair (right after the shower….wash day) and let my hair air dry half way, then followed the rest by blow drying it with my on low force, but medium heat. Oh. My. Gawwwww. This stuff is amazing. My hair felt, looked, AND stayed “thick”! It wasn’t sticky or crunchy like most thickening sprays and it smells soooo good. It actually made my hair extremely soft and manageable. It looked healthier, shinier, just overall……beautiful. Not as creamy, so not as easy to rub between your fingers, and apply to hair. I am a little disappointed, as not a cheap product. It is usually good value for money, as only need a small amount. I used this in my daughters hair for a pageant. It left a great cast on her curls so I was able to SOTC and get it to be a lightweight soft “wave”. The judges all wrote on her score card that they loved her hair. I’m very happy with this purchase for the price! I would purchase again down the road but wish it had a slightly better smell to it. I am going to give it a 3 since I couldn’t give it a 3.5. The Defining Gel has a great non-sticky appeal. Neither my hands nor my hair felt heavy, coated or sticky but it did have some “crunchy” pieces. I don’t like that crunchy gel feeling in my hair. My hair wasn’t curly after using the diffuser as it is with another product I use. It was just barely waves. I will try it again with a different diffuser and see what happens. This curl cream would be great for you if you’re not looking to have too much hold in your hair. It’s thick, but it doesn’t create a very strong cast for me. As you can see, my hair is already frizzing at the roots and it’s not completely dry yet. There’s no cast to scrunch out. The pump is also really hard to use and only dispenses like a dime size of product with each pump, which means I need to pump twice just to get enough for one section of hair. It is very hydrating, so I can’t knock it down too much, but it is probably my least favorite ouidad product, which is saying a lot because I LOVE ouidad. I gave it three stars because it doesn’t really work that well with my curly hair. I just started used ouidad products so there’s a learning curve. I have coily and s shaped curls. It’s a blend of two different types of curls. The gel would work very well for someone whose hair is not coily like mine. I need something a bit different or stronger. I would say that in comparison to million other products that I have tried, it’s one of the better ones. It doesn’t make my hair feel crunchy which is great. I've struggled with finding products to tame my type 3B curls for as long as I can remember. I have tried mousse, leave-in conditioners, gels, and all kinds of creams. The product is a clear gel and you need only use a dime or quarter size amount depending on how thick/long your hair is. The product has a very natural, floral smell that doesn't overwhelm you. I use this product every day with my Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave In Conditioning Cream and they work extremely well together. This lightweight gel helps tame frizz while also letting the curls keep their natural shape without any crunchiness or residue. I have used this gel for over a year now and it has become a staple in my hair-care products. The product locks moisture in your hair and leaves it hydrated all day. A bottle of this product lasts me about three-four months. This product really does it all when it comes to taming frizz and moisturizing curly hair, but that is to be expected given that the bottle is almost $30 for only 8.5 FL. OZ. When you think about it, this high price does get to be too expensive for a smaller bottle when you use this product on a daily basis, but I have yet to find any other products that work as well as this one does with my hair. I recommend this product to every curly-haired person I know! Pretty cheap and works great and strong and takes hold well. I enjoy plus I have three little brothers so this product also works great in their hair. using warm water this product comes out well and doesn't take very long to rinse out. from my experience this product lasts long and using comb you can style it any way you desire. but when it dry's it looks like dandruff especially if you have black hair.angel.a

I've used this brand of styling gel for years. The newer products with higher numbers, don't seem to have better holding power than those with lower numbers. Perhaps they have changed the formula. #9 is rarely stocked in stores anymore. It works best on my fine hair which blows in the wind if I don't use it. You rub it into your hair after you shampoo while your hair is still wet. When your hair dries, the hair stays where you combed it until you run a comb or brush through it to take the stiffness out. It will last for about 2 days. It is water soluble and non-greasy. And it is also inexpensive. One bottle will last me more than a month. The squeezable bottle allows you to use every bit of it. Pretty cheap and works great and strong and takes hold well. I enjoy plus I have three little brothers so this product also works great in their hair. using warm water this product comes out well and doesn't take very long to rinse out. from my experience this product lasts long and using comb you can style it any way you desire. but when it dry's it looks like dandruff especially if you have black hair.angel.a

I have naturally curly hair. "Curly girls" know that gel is better than mousse any day. This is my favorite product to use for my hair. It's SO CHEAP I don't know if you could ever convince me that some expensive bottle of gel is going to do much better than this stuff, so I don't waste my money. Here's my routine. -Wash condition (make sure shampoo is sulfate free!) -Use tshirt to absorb excess water -Apply serum or argan oil to ends -Apply generous amount of gel eeeverywhere -Blow dry with DIFFUSER -Shake out curls to get rid of the "crunchy" feel And you're good to go for a couple days!kate.s

I've used this brand of styling gel for years. The newer products with higher numbers, don't seem to have better holding power than those with lower numbers. Perhaps they have changed the formula. #9 is rarely stocked in stores anymore. It works best on my fine hair which blows in the wind if I don't use it. You rub it into your hair after you shampoo while your hair is still wet. When your hair dries, the hair stays where you combed it until you run a comb or brush through it to take the stiffness out. It will last for about 2 days. It is water soluble and non-greasy. And it is also inexpensive. One bottle will last me more than a month. The squeezable bottle allows you to use every bit of it. This is the product that I have been looking for for the longest time! If you have curly hair, this is a must have. Here is how you use it, after detangling your hair, and a generous amount to your hair. If you add too much your hair won’t look super curly. After that just bunch your hair together to make it look curly. My hair looks so gorgeous when using this product. My family uses it as well. Maybe I came in with too high of hopes. Orrr maybe I just used to much. Either way, it left my hair greasy looking, weighed down, and it was obvious something was in my hair. Felt weird to touch my own hair. I tried using a tiny amount and that didn't help either. I think it just doesn't get along with my personal hair bevause I know it works for a few friends!tanya.b

After a year of locs- I combed them out. Usually I see a lot of product build up when I take out my locs, however after exclusively using this for a year, there wasn't much at all. I have also used this for a two-strand twist and it worked well. Was not heavy and oily and my hair was very flexible and pliable.
