20 Best Hair Gels For Thick Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl

I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m

I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

I am pretty brand loyal when it comes to my haircare, but every now and again if a product is amazing enough from another line , I will cheat on my usual and dip into the other line for that product. This is one of them The Moroccan Oil Treatment oil, which I feel is their most popular product that lead the way for this brand I think lol yes it is expensive, yes I get it cheaper because I am a liscenced professional lol but, when it comes to these higher end hair products , usually,you get what you pay for. It is worth the expensive price tag. There are some expensive hair products that I feel are not worth it and are way too overpriced for what they actually do and I am always very honest in my reviews on hair care because I live and breathe hair , its my profession, its what I love and I love to help people achieve hair they love, so if that means being honest and saying hey this product isnt worth it or its crap OR hey , this is not a brand I retail at work BUT Ive used it and I love it and recommend it even if u need to buy it elsewhere and I dont really achieve much for myself, what I want to achieve is to educate people on hair hair products and what works for them . So I am always honest when clients ask me about Moroccan oil.. that no we dont carry it but it is something I love and use everyday.it gives my hair amazing shine, it makes it feel soft and silky and just glides on over those little split ends like they are there, it helps tame frizz and flyaways and its a treatment that actually is beneficial to your hair. The bottle is on the small side but a little goes a LONG way unless you want to look like you stuck your hair in some grease than by all means lol but seriously a tiny bit, rub in your palms and rub jtno your hair , focusing on the ends and midshaft scalp will just make u oily I have naturally curly hair that is prone to dryness, it gets frizzy , its thick. I use the regular Moroccan oil treatment but there is also a light for those with finer hair , more oily , sleek type ,thinner hair that this regular one might be a little heavy for. I also apply this to dry hairz over my midshaft and ends when I feel they could use a little TLC . If theyre looking a little dry maybe just a little bit of this run through it and it will make your hair feel all soft and loveable again. I like the smell, it isnt anything strong or overpowering. This is the only hair product I do use from Moroccan oil, I am sure they do have other good products but at that price point and already being happy with my current hair care routine, Ive never felt the need to try them and I feel that this product here is their Holy Grail so to speak, like the 1 amazing stand out product where they are at the top of their game. I really love using this stuff. I have for years. My original favorite was Chi Silk Infusions and I still like that stuff but I feel this does the job better. So basically youd use something like this for heat and uv protection as well as moisture and shine. Mostly I use it for getting some moisture back in my really parched, heat abused hair for a nice, healthy and naturally shiny look. Using products like that can go wrong really fast. You can cross the line into greasy mess from shiny tresses quick. You can do that with this too if you use too much but a lot of products do that no matter how little you use. This lasts forever because even with the thickest and driest hair needs only a dime size or less warmed between the palms and lightly rubbed through every layer from root to ends with finger tips open to get every strand focusing on the ends. Ive noticed that it gives me life back to my hair. It gives me that naturally healthy movement you just dont get with fried hair. With this and changing my hair habits I have come almost all the way back from totally broken hair to healthy hair thats a little dry and has split ends. And with my current issues it makes it look like I have none. Especially when I flat iron my hair with this as a heat protectant it almost seals the cuticle completely and keeps my hair looking super healthy until my next wash. I also use it randomly to add a touch of moisture back into my hair if its really dry. Or if my ends are getting bad between trims I use this and flat iron them to seal them and make them look healthy temporarily. It also smells amazing. I love the comforting and unique almost but not quite tropical scent. Its very unique and very feminine without being like a perfume. It makes my hair smell fresh and pretty and that scent lasts for a couple days. Overall it is a little expensive but it lasts a long time so it ends up costing almost the same as the drugstore over time because if does last so long. Its just more of an initial investment. A sephora employee told me this stuff actually is bad for your hair and dries it out but I dont think it would have gotten so famous if it wasnt so great for so many people. Maybe she just had a bad experience. It wouldnt have been the first time I had been given bad information by a Sephora employee but I just thought Id mention it. I totally recommend. Lets just say, I love Morrocanoil and have for years the product has always been consistently the same until I tried the bottle from this seller.This does not smell or feel like MoroccanoilI love my normal Morrocanoil because its Lux, silky smooth and has a specific color and wonderful smell. This product was not any of those things it was tacky it stuck to my hands and didnt glide through my hair and made my hair feel rough. It had a nice smell but not the Moroccanoil scent.I still have some Moroccanoil from my last bottle and even the color is different.This new product is not good. Not sure if I just got an off bottle or what has happened.I read over the label and it said nothing about a new formula. All I can say is this is not the signature Morrocanoil and its not a good product. It feels like castoroil.I liked the price and thats why I ordered from this seller but next time I will just pay full price at the salon because I know what Im getting.It even wasnt in its signature box or had the same colored label so that makes me more curious.I couldnt find a way to contact the seller I went to the reorder page and the sellers name was different then this one. I'd been using Herbal Essences' 'set me up' styling gel for years and only purchased Garnier's styling gel because Herbal Essences is no longer making the particular gel I had been using, or for some reason, it simply is no longer available at a reasonable price. I have to say that Garnier's gel is far superior to Herbal Essences' gel. I have extremely short gray hair, and my morning routine consists of a one to two-minute blow dry, a quick brush through my hair, and an application of a small dollop of hair gel. After that, I never touch my hair for the rest of the day. Garnier's product is very light, nicely scented, and it stiffens my hair in place with a very natural look. There is absolutely no white flaking, and the amount required to hold my hair in place is about half what I used to use with the Herbal Essences gel. A dime-sized amount is completely adequate to ensure my hair doesn't move. I am far more satisfied with this gel than with the various ridiculously expensive gels my hair stylist uses on my hair when I go in for a haircut every six weeks. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product, and the inexpensive price can't be beat!harley.g

This acts like glue. I have long hair (just above waist) and I tried this because my husband uses it (short hair). I added a quarter size amount to damp hair, scrunched it a bit and let air dry. Nice wavy curls but midday I put my hair up into a messy bun (hair was barely damp). At the end of the day when I let my hair down it was all glued together. When I brushed out my hair it ripped and pulled. Awful. My hair is now damaged and completely frizzed out. I am getting it all cut off this weekend. This is the only hair gel I use. I freak out if I’m out of it. I was traveling and had an early appointment and realized “one of us” didn’t pack it. I have very fluffy/fro-ey hair so I rely on it. It’s water based and light and had an impressive hold. It shakes out or fluffs out without flaking. An easy hair re-wet can help the water based formula reshape and get ya through the last few hours of the day if you need. This a light gel with a soft yet fitm hold leaving you with touchable curls. No crunch. Great scent. This gel is best suited for use on one product wash n go's…..meaning layer the gel on top of an oil only- no leave in. Most issues with flaking only occur with incompatible products or product lines. I was so tired of purchasing weak eyebrow gels that would never hold my brows the way I wanted until I saw Ashley Graham's tutorial and I just RAN to get this! On wet hair the ginger smell is strong and the hair (damaged parts) were crunchy. My roots were nice and soft. My favorite this about this gel is how soft it makes my hair. It's very hydrating and conditioning to the hair, every time I use this my curls are very soft and bouncy. I have mixed it with several other leave in conditioners and creams, both from the same brand and from other brands, and I have found it mixes well with a few different products. It doesn't mix with everything, test it in your hands first, but I found a few good combos with this gel. It also gives my hair good shine, I really loved that. My wash n go's always lasted a few days with this gel. I wish it had a little more hold, I'd say this is like medium hold. It didn't give a strong cast, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Even without strong hold, it's still a great and dependable gel. So I just paid way more- thinking I was getting the old version and it’s really the new version that’s available for cheap everywhere! This is one of those hair gels that got you covered for long hours. In this day and age Us guys have become a little self conscious about our hair. I’ve used a few that don’t really last that long and I’ve got to admit my hair needs gel like this to be tamed; plus it smells great. It smells to me like 🍏 green apple and not like glue Lol. This gel is great for wash n gos, updos, and laying edges. My wash n gos come out super defined and I get big hair as my style gets old. Then I’ll use this gel to slick up my hair into a puff/bun. I’ve tried many edge controls and none of them last past 2 hours then my edges would start to curl up. But with this gel, I apply it and lay my edges, tie a satin scarf around them, set for 10 minutes, and I’m good to go for the whole day. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. After my leave-in I usually have a few tangles, but when I use this cream instead of my usual cream, it gave me the best slip and gets all the tangles out that my leave in did not attack, and I had no frizz. It cut my wash day in half. It used to take me an hour in a half to do my hair (tangles, ugh!), now it only takes 45 – 50 minutes. My curls were so hydrated and defined. I just love this product. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. It will be easier to work through the hair and wont leave a tangles mess. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. I found this on sale at Ulta for 3 for $25… It's the PERFECT finishing product for my thick, straight hair. I've tried a TON of styling creams, lotions, sprays, and pomades over the years, but they all made my hair look flat, greasy, stiff, or didn't have enough hold to keep baby hairs from sticking up. This helps give hair a little 2nd day texture without making it look dirty, doesn't weigh hair down at ALL, keeps flyaways and baby hairs at bay, and keeps split ends from looking… split! It also doesn't make my hair crunchymy hair is still soft and has movement. I've used it before putting on hot rollers and it helps hold the volume all day! I received this as a sample from Ulta with another purchase I had made. I have thin, fine hair and I use this product either with a curling iron or curlers . It says it has #3 hold and it does. I cannot tell you how very pleased I am. I have actually gone two days without styling my hair and it still looks good. This is unheard of for me. I have used very expensive products very inexpensive products and nothing works for me like the EIMI Pearl Styler Styling Gel. I might also mention that I live in a very humid area.chrissipoo

Have used this for years on my fine, white, spiky short hair. Applied to damp hair it can spike hair from 1.5 cm to 3 cm without any falling over. Spikes last all day. Gives a lovely shine with is often difficult with white hair. Love it.Janne C.

I really like this product that I discovered randomly. The hold is good, and doesnt stay sticky. Like the smell too. But the packaging is terrible the rotating cap with dispenser allows small amounts to remain on it after closing and leaving sticky stains everywhere.Anonymous

was def excited to try a hair gel complimentary from DevaCurl for my honest opinion that claims to be not crunchy. I'm always very skeptical about products that claim to work hair miracles because I've experienced many let downs.. One difference about this is it says to work it in while curls are soaking wet. I still did get a little frizz but nothing like with what i usually use. I would purchase this and recommend it to other curly people. I did take one star for the frizz but would be curious to see how it holds up in an environment that's isn't as humid as whereI live.Laura

Yes! Her hair is fly-away frizzy with light curls like mine, and I think she'll appreciate this as I do. Even when I unthinkingly put a cheap gel on first one day (that I usually layer on when my hair is dried), it came out great with the 2 products piggybacked! And the effect lasts a few days between washings. I just need to fluff it up with a pic, even teasing parts a bit (I'm THAT old!) then smoothing over and applying hairspray. I did like the previous formulation better; I s'ppose the company got shamed into changing it (due to a TV documentary). But this is a great product for my fine hair.joyce

I used to use the Arc Angel gel and always liked it. I switched to Ouidad, which works great, but if I leave Ouidad on my hair for too many days without washing it, my scalp gets itchy. I saw Deva had changed the formula so I gave it a try. The gel has a nice thick consistency and you don't need a lot, which is great, however, you don't get nearly the definition and shine you used to get with Arc Angel. At the end of the day my hair is frizzy, the next day it's really a mess. I'm going to go back to Ouidad and just try a different formula. If you were a fan of Arc Angel, prepare to be disappointed.Mary

I received this complimentary from #influenster for my honest opinion. First off let me tell you that this one is different from the gel. To me it's creamy but not too thick either. the first time I used it I didn't use as much product as the second. My hair didn't feel too stiff or dry it was pretty good but since I used less product I still had some frizz but not as much compared to not using any product. I didn't notice any flakes the first day but I washed my hair by the second day. For the second time I used more product and my hair got more stiff and it felt dry and way less frizz. I did the same as the first time and didn't wash it out and it was ok. I didn't like the texture and feeling of my hair but there was minimal flakes by the second day but starting by the 3rd day it was very flaky. I would consider using and buying this product and try different amounts of product but definitely wash it out by the second day.maria.m

I received this #freeproduct in exchange for a review. For reference I have waist-length frizzy wavy hair that I typically blow dry straight. I love my natural waves, but usually, they look too frizzy for my liking. I tried out this product by applying it and then wrapping my hair in a microfibre towel and then letting it air dry. It clumped my waves together nicely and had a little bit of crunch to scrunch out. Most gels weigh down my waves to the point that they get stretched straight. This product didn't do that and my waves held their shape. I did notice some frizz but nowhere near the amount that happens when I air dry with no product. It also made my hair smell great! I recommend this entire product line to fellow wavies!indie

I got the combo of Shea Moisture Papaya & Neroli Anti Frizz products to try from top box to give a review on how it is and everything and the first time I used it but I’ve said time and time again that Shea Moisture is a never fail product for curly hair. I can feel a little difference. The smell is amazing and not too strong and it's a medium smell. This shampoo is great on wash days in the mornings because it’s not harsh on the hair at all. My hair is still moisturized and actually looks a bit shinier. The packaging is sturdy and hard to break. You get a lot of product in one bottle so it will last at least two months. This conditioner does an excellent job on my natural hair. My curls have never been better since switching over to SheaMoisture.This is such a great conditioner. Helps with frizziness and conditions and smooths so well. Then the last is the gel which made my hair really soft and smooth. If you're looking for a hair gel that has a super-duper, concrete-like firm hold…this is it. It's also got a pleasant, non-offensive, masculine scent. It's easy to spread throughout the hair (unlike some of the other "ultra firm" hold hair gels) and you can easily thin out the gel with some water. However, it does take about an hour for this gel to dry at ambient room temperature, once applied. Just note that if you're looking to transfer the gel into another bottle (like a travel bottle), the scent disappears quickly and it starts to take on a weird consistency. Keep it in the original bottle or buy a smaller bottle size. And if you're keeping it on your bathroom counter, look into buying a pump. Be sure to shop around, pricing varies wildly between beauty shops and online retailers.B.L.

American crew is a really great product and works exactly as advertised. Its smooth and rich in texture and leaves your hair a little crunchy while firmly holding hair in place.. but it's just to expensive. I can get the same quality hair care If not less from a local grocery store for 75% less. I would use this product all the time, I just wish it was more affordable. It's like most high end hair styling products. It does what it says it should. I use a pea size blob, a bit of water to emulsify and run through my hair prior to going in with a hair-dryer. Great volume for a high pony tail or any up-do. My son uses it to slick back his hair. Pure gel, no water. There's the usual tacky residue on your hands, brushes and combs. Wash brushes and combs using a little shampoo and you're ready for the next day.melissa.h

I have been loving this Curl Foaming Gel by VerbxManesbyMell! I have been using this on my wavy/curly hair for the past 5 weeks now and have been loving the results. I personally still like to use this gel with a leave-in (conditioner or primer), and I always finish with an oil. You could definitely use this product as a one and done and it would still work great. I typically diffuse my hair when styling, but I've used this when plopping/air-drying also and have found that it works equally as well with either technique. I use this to touch up and refresh my waves and curls in between wash days. The hold is amazing but the cast is not hard or crunchy at all and is easily broken with a hair oil. If you make sure you're using the correct amount of product for your personal hair and texture, then I do not think you can do any wrong. You also need to be styling with this product on hair that is wet or soaking wet, as that's how it works best.Court

Calling all my curly haired girls! This foaming gel is amazing for your curls! I have damaged curls and this makes them pop! It is paraben, gluten, silicone, and sulfate free, as well as PETA certified cruelty free. The product is also vegan. It does state that it is fragrance free, but it does have a citrus scent to it, but is smells delicious! This product was developed for every curl type, I have 2b/2c hair and this helps tame my frizz and keep my curls looking bouncy and healthy! You add this to soaking wet hair using the praying hands motion and scrunch or you can use your denman brush and apply the mousse to it. I tried the Verb Curl Foaming Gel. It claims to hold, shape, define, and defrizz. I love how innovative and unique this formula is. I braid my hair with oil before I go to bed so I have nice waves for the next day. This product meets all the marks it claims to do. It holds my waves and allows them to last all day. It allows me to shape my waves and get better definition. It keeps my hair frizz free and full of happy waves. I love that the Foaming gel is lightweight and maintains my hair volume and fullness. It defines my waves and makes them last all day without making them crunchy, which is a huge plus in my book. I love that it contains healthy ingredients to provide lasting moisture to hair and that it works for all curl types to create a healthy and frizz free medium hold. I have long curly hair and I use a combination of hair gels depending on the humidity. Gave this product a go and love it. Easy to apply and it washes out easily.Nicole G.
