20 Best Hair Styling Products For Men With Thinning Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

This is my first foray into pomades, and I was braced for something between a hair oil and the crunchy gels of the 80s. I was pleasantly surprised to find Cremo delivered something far better. This pomade is a solid hold, especially when worked through do hair, and it holds for 24 hours, if not longer. I've been able to mist water on my hair and comb it back into place after sleeping for a second day's hold. It doesn't have a strong smell, which is great — nothing to compete with my aftershave and cologne. I have 3a/b curly hair, ringlets with big volume and I thought I'd never be able to wear my hair straight without using a straightener religiously. And with this product alone, I can wear my hair slicked back and mostly straight in a Peaky Blinders cut. That's the kind of hold Cremo delivers, and I'm a convert for life. Last year, my wife tried to get me my old styling cream, which is something I usually do myself at the salon after a cut, and couldn't find it. I recently received this Cremo Thickening Styling Paste #freeproduct from #trywithtopbox to try in exchange for an honest review. This is the first time my fiancé is trying a styling paste, he usually uses hair glue for his hair. He found that the product was easy to use and work into his hair. The texture of the paste is really soft and not at all sticky or tacky. It however does not have as much hold as his usual hair glue. He actually has pretty thick hair to begin with so he couldn't tell if there was a thickening effect. However, he said he really loved the scent of product. Most hair styling products he has tried usually smells waxy or has a overwhelming perfumy scent. This one smells like an old fashioned barber shop. He also liked the consistency of the product so he is looking forward to trying another product within the line but with a stronger hold.Icbeautybliss

I like this product. I've been using it for a while. It definitely has a good hold on your hair without making it look like there's anything in your hair. I would recommend maybe adding some natural ingredients to make it smell a little better, if possible. Also, I don't know who did the wrapping, but filling up the entire box with confetti paper for a small container of this cream pomade was not the move. If it's like an environmentally friendly thing, I get it, but find a new option. The confetti paper is a mess and leaves behind a lot of paper powder all over everything inside the box and then it got on my hands and on the floor.S Merchant

This rich yet lightweight cream spreads easily and provides a light hold with low shine as described. Its aroma is quite similar to Fiber and its performance is what I would imagine a light gold version of that product to be. This would be great for medium to coarse hair in short styles that seek natural control without the need for major sculpting or manipulating. If you seek something with a low shine finish but more substantial and/or element-defying hold then try Fiber or perhaps combine the two products for customized control.ReadySteadyMoJo

I have a full head of hair but it was very fine hair. Nothing has EVER worked for my hair to stay up all day. I’ve tried clays, pomades, forte clay, and everything. Hair has always fell flat on my face after 30 minutes. Condition forst, then shampoo, followed by this spray as prestyler, blowdry, and post style with the forte hair cream = Your hair will stay up ALL DAY. Swell did absolutely nothing for my hair. I have thin, fine hair and was recommended this product after reaching out to them on instagram (really good customer service though!). But this did not make my hair appear thicker or feel fuller as it says on the bottle. Disappointed 🙁Julie

The actual product is amazing, it helps add volume to my hair but still feels clean and smells great. My problem is just with the container- the first time I went to open the lid, it broke off at the super flimsy hinge. I received the Living Proof full thickening mousse free for review from PINCHme and I've honestly really enjoyed this product. This mousse is said to boost volume while holding your style and I would definitely agree with that claim. Its lightweight and smells quite nice. It's not a super airy mousse but it's not super dense either. It doesn't evaporate right away but it's not heavy or sticky at all. I have pretty long hair so instead of the standard egg size I typically use maybe two egg size dallops. It has been way too hot and humid here lately to do much with my hair, and while the directions say to blow-dry, I just can't. I apply it to my damp hair right after my shower and then I tie it up in a bun. When it's fully dry and I let it down, it's so full of volume and the texture is lovely. The waves are beautiful and they do hold all day. Many products of this type cause my hair to get frizzy and almost static like but this one doesn't do that. I get no flyaways or frizz with this mousse and my hair smells so great. It's a nice, light clean smell, very subtle. I've really enjoyed using this product and I would definitely recommend it. Oh, and I like the packaging as well. The button you press to dispense the mousse is a nice solid button. For those of us that have hands and fingers that might not work so well, I had no issues.ARain

For Baby Fine Hair People: This works! It's the only product I've found that actually makes my genuinely baby fine hair look thicker and appear to have some body. The effect lasts all day and onto the next if you decide not to wash your hair every day. I use it sparingly and blow dry carefully though, because it does make your hair a little stickier before it's dried. That can cause baby fine hair to break when combing. So use it, be very gentle when combing or brushing, and enjoy. This product works better for my baby fine hair than the Living Proof Full Thickening Cream. I found that product to be too greasy and it weighs my baby fines down. I wrote a long review about the LP Thickening Cream and dealing with baby fine hair in case that's helpful to anyone. My one complaint about LP products, or any in general, is fragrance. I'm picky about scents and would never wear this scent as a perfume, so why would I want it anywhere on my body? I wish all these products had a fragrance-free version.asnetall

On Baby Fine Hair and this product: I have real baby fine hair. Lots of people talk about having baby fine hair, but really don't. It's a mixed blessing. Straight baby fine hair is so smooth that clips, bands, etc. can slide out of it unless there's silicone on the inside of a clip to grip the hair. If your baby fine hair is light in color, it may be almost see-through when backlit. This is not great if you want to feel like you have a nice full head of hair. If you take a strand of baby fine hair and hold it parallel to the floor, the strand itself is such a small diameter that it forms almost a sharp 90-degree angle hanging straight down from the edge of your fingers; no curve of any sort as it hangs down. It's hard for straight baby fine hair to hold a curl unless you do harsh stuff to make it hold. That, in turn, damages your hair. Almost any processing damages baby fine hair. It's also very easy to break strands of baby fine hair so you have to comb or brush carefully. Baby fine hair will blow everywhere if there's the slightest breeze. In my case, that means I've always got messy hair. Light baby fine hair is a pain if it gets blown onto your face or into your eyelashes. You can feel it's there, but it's hard to see the individual delicate strands and hard to detect them with your fingers. That's the scoop on baby fines. You live with it and figure out how to deal with it. BUT, straight baby fine hair can be so shiny and smooth that it can look and feel as luxurious as silk when it's in good condition. Like babies' hair! This can be lovely if your hair is thick enough. I've tried this product as directed with bad results. The product is too oily or thick even when put on extremely sparingly, so it weighs my hair down, making it look unwashed and stringy. So, I decided to try to use it as a rinse after shampooing, and have had better luck. I distribute it throughout the hair from roots to tips and then rinse it out. Baby fine hair people will feel a kind of stickiness or roughness once it is rinsed out, and will have to comb their hair carefully so as not to break it, but it adds product in just the right amount for real baby fine hair to have some bounce and look thicker without weighing it down or making it look greasy. It's not going to be a dramatic difference though. I have had far better luck with the Living Proof Thickening Mousse. After trying what feels like hundreds of conditioners, mousses and creams that did nothing, LP Mousse has been my go-to product. It's the only product I've found that makes my hair look thicker and that lasts all day looking great. It makes me feel almost like I have normal-people-hair! But I take breaks. I found that blow-drying damages my hair too easily, and the mousse, although super effective at making my hair look thicker and giving it more body, makes my hair sticky enough that I break hair easily, even when combing gently. So, Baby Fine Sisters take note. You have to handle your hair really gently with these products. Personally, I'd opt for the LP mousse over the cream, and be gentle with my hair. If you're looking for a hair gel that has a super-duper, concrete-like firm hold…this is it. It's also got a pleasant, non-offensive, masculine scent. It's easy to spread throughout the hair (unlike some of the other "ultra firm" hold hair gels) and you can easily thin out the gel with some water. However, it does take about an hour for this gel to dry at ambient room temperature, once applied. Just note that if you're looking to transfer the gel into another bottle (like a travel bottle), the scent disappears quickly and it starts to take on a weird consistency. Keep it in the original bottle or buy a smaller bottle size. And if you're keeping it on your bathroom counter, look into buying a pump. Be sure to shop around, pricing varies wildly between beauty shops and online retailers.B.L.

American crew is a really great product and works exactly as advertised. Its smooth and rich in texture and leaves your hair a little crunchy while firmly holding hair in place.. but it's just to expensive. I can get the same quality hair care If not less from a local grocery store for 75% less. I would use this product all the time, I just wish it was more affordable. It's like most high end hair styling products. It does what it says it should. I use a pea size blob, a bit of water to emulsify and run through my hair prior to going in with a hair-dryer. Great volume for a high pony tail or any up-do. My son uses it to slick back his hair. Pure gel, no water. There's the usual tacky residue on your hands, brushes and combs. Wash brushes and combs using a little shampoo and you're ready for the next day.melissa.h

My friend let me try hers when we were getting ready to go out. I immediately noticed how good it smelled. Clean but very distinguished and fun. The packaging and name is also great. As far as the useage it definitely made my hair thicker at the roots (and smell good) it was super lightweight while still maintaining hold and it didn’t feel very sticky at all which is important to my sensory issues. I've got medium-length colored thin hair. I spray it on towel-dried hair and then blow-dry in section, and it does what it promised – "Great for volume at the roots, control at the ends and an overall smooth look". At the first time when I used it I didn't like the sticky feeling, but I got used to it and just go on with drying and then I have my volume at roots, which I wanted! Check out their "badlands paste" for the volume as well, by the way The manufacturer says, this spray works good with roller sets, hot rollers and curling irons – I don't use it daily, so can't tell. The fragrance is not childish, some might say it smells like men's perfume, it might be because of Blonde Woods in hte heart of composition. I received this as a free trial in an order from Beautylish. I have light blonde, very fine hair. Even though I do have fine hair, I have a lot of it. I consistently use volumizing shampoo and root lifters/products that add extra body to hair. This particular product worked for my hair very well, though nothing about it stood out. My hair never looked flat when I used it, but it was the average amount of body I get with any other product I've used. This thickening spray was also easy to use, and had a pleasant smell. I looked into the price of this product, and for what it costs I however would not recommend it because you can find cheaper products that do the same thing. I normally use the Clay but there wasn’t any available, so tried this instead. It has medium level hold and leaves your hair feeling nice. You have to rub quite hard in your hands first, to make sure the white doesn’t show up in your hair.Neil

The American Crew Defining Paste is a an absolute must have if you are like me and want natural looking hair with some pliable hold. I use this product everyday and the smell is absolutely amazing, something of a light cologne. I suggest this product above any similar in any brand, this one is the best by far.ssrs434

Apply to damptowel dried hair for best results and finish using a little more. Scoops out perfectly fine. Breaks downEmulsifies great, however it does leave a sticky residue on your hands. The smell is a bit funky, but definitely not the worst. I would use this in combination with a matte productas a finishing product because the shine can look a bit greasy at times. Do keep in mind it is a low hold product, so I wouldnt recommend if you have medium lengthlong hair or if youre expecting your hair to maintain all day. I thought this was supposed to be a light hair spray where it can hold your hair while leaving a nice soft flexible touch. It stiffened my hair quite a bit which I did not like. It is also hard to wash it off unless you use a conditioner to do it which I do not normally use since I already have soft thin hair.Sabby

This does not have a 'variable hold' or 'incredibly flexible finish' as the product description claims at the time of this review. It is essentially a spray gel. It has an incredibly strong alcohol smell. It takes a decent bit of pressure on the spray button to release the product and it comes out in a strong concentrated blast. It's not really suitable for spraying directly on your hair like a hairspray because of this. It is better used spraying first onto a brush or comb or on your hands then combining through your hair. It finishes just like a spray gel or hair spray in that your hair will be dry and crunchy. Also only a few hours after combing a not insignificant amount of the product through my hair it has almost completely disintegrated to the point its like I have nothing in my hair at all. So you will have a hair spray like finish which wears off after a few hours. I would not recommend this product.Andrew K

The sprayer head was changed so it has more volume per spray and less coverage — I am still using the same pump from 2 years ago while buying refills. It's tough looking for hair product that's natural and good on the body. While I enjoy a majority of the Badger products, this one needs a little more work on it. A lot of the reviews here are pretty much the same; a little more hold is desperately needed. A little beeswax is needed for a firmer hold. Also, water solubility is a problem as well. It's a bit oily at times when washing it from your hair; sometimes two washes are needed to clean up. Overall, the product does it job; smells great, holds but could hold a bit tighter. I bought this product for my husband. He has short, soft hair type. His favourite hair cream is discontinued so I got this one for the replacement. Having good ingredients and beautiful smell but… My husband didn't like it very much because it comes off and goes into his eyes. Too runny than textured wax type cream side. I've tried a number of American Crew products and this one just doesn't work for me. It has less hold than the pomade, in my opinion, and leaves my hair looking greasy to the point that it looks like I've worked out and didn't shower afterwards. Over lockdown I grew my hair out like a lot of people and decided to go to for a traditional barber cut afterwards ending up with a slick back style. I found my existing hair products a bit lacking so decided to look into getting more professional (if you will) products. After some research I liked the look of Uppercut's products and also their brand ideals and after browsing their site settled on the Matte Pomade. Now that I've been using it for a while and figured out the best amount and application for my hair I'm really pleased with it. It's light and not too shiny giving my hair a natural look which I really like. It also washes out well with water meaning I don't have to put my hair through shampooing every day but still working without making my hair greasy or limp a couple of days after shampooing. I do find I need to hold the sides with some hairspray but that could be down to my hair or inexperience in styling longer hair (any plans for adding hairspray to your range?). Just on a side note, I was sent a really handy little guide with the product that gave scores out of 10 for hold and shine for all the styling products which was much more helpful than the info on the site in my opinion. Seems quite effective in adding volume for men with a finer hair type and looking for a product that does that. Could be re-applied intra-day if desired or needed, as it is to be applied to dry hair rather than wet. I would say this also means it doesn't really combine or work very well if you try to add it after using another styling product (say you wanting it just to add more volume for example). It functions more as a standalone product from what I've found. Because it has a less firm hold it should work well for those after something to allow a looser natural-looking style and adding volume at the same time, less so for those who want a style that needs a more controlled styling product with a firmer hold to pull off.Luke

By that I mean each hair is silky and fine but there are tons of them. The liquid version of this is good too but gives a firmer result. I often combine them a bit. The other review was from the UK, but I'm in the USA and I'm seeing a change as well. I've tried two different retailers and both purchases had the same quality issues. It used to be more solid to the touch and now it is much more gooey. It doesn't hold my hairstyle nearly as well as it used to. I was debating between one or two stars but decided on 1 as I would not recommend this anymore and there are better fibers out there.Sean

I've been a user of Clay for seven years and decided to try Thick because P&P hasn't let me down yet. I have a shorter hairstyle and slightly thinning in the rear crown. The hold is lighter than Clay and this is better for more casual days when I want a little less weight and hold and still can still my hair like I want. It leaves my hair feeling like there's almost no product in it and it smells great! I'm almost tempted to switch to Thick full time. I did as instructed…. "A little goes a long way – don't use too much." I put an extremely small amount into my hand. As I was working the cream with my hands, the orangish cream turned white. Why is it turning white. I applied it my hair, but it left white streaks in my hair. I contacted customer service (unable to speak to a live person) via email about the situation. Their response: "Thank you for reaching out. I'm sorry you're having difficulty with he Thick. First I would suggest cutting back on how much you are using. A little goes a long way. Then work it into your hands vigorously to warm it up. You may have to play around with it a little to get the amount right." Basically, customer service just re-phrased the directions for Thick as stated on their site. Seriously? So I tried again. After vigorously working the cream with my hands, the white disappeared but left my hands sticky. That's all. There was nothing left to apply to my hair. I'm thinking, "What the f***?!" The cream should turn to clear, not white. And… one shouldn't have to vigorously work the cream in the hands. It's a cream. It's not the Putty. Even the Clay becomes clear after working it in the hands. I've had no issues using the Putty and Clay, but I would definitely stay away from the Thick. It's not worth the frustration. I love THICK! I grew out my hair a little bit due to it thinning as I'm getting older, but the products I used before would clump to hair together making my thinning hair more obvious. I was looking for something that didn't weigh my hair down, didn't clump my hair and had a somewhat loose hold. I tried THICK and it's all I use now. I have used the American Crew Fiber and Pomade. This product, the "Forming Cream" I would describe as the middle, the perfect balance. My hair is thick, somewhat coarse, yet soft. I wear my hair short, almost like a buzz and usually let it grow longer so that I can comb it over (by longer I'm talking 4-5 inches on the top, sometimes more). What I didn't like about Fiber is that it can be too clay like and usually made my hair too stiff. I found fiber to work best the shorter my hair was, but even then it was a super strong and stiff hold. It was actually working as intended, but not to my liking. What I didn't like about Pomade was the high shine and depending on how much used, greasy feel to my hair. And once again, you buy Pomade for the shine, so working as intended but not to my liking.dipen.p

I'll be honest, its a little sticky but its manageable. My husband and my 12 year old son use it religiously. They both like it because not much product is needed and it lasts all day, if you have pretty thick hair maybe use a little more product or you may have to apply it twice. The American Crew Boost Powder really works wonders! I was amazed when I used it for the first time. My hair is dead straight and would usually need a strong clay to hold my hair and even then it tends to loose its form. With the boost powder my hair stays exactly how I place it and I can style it how I want. The best thing is that I can change the style throughout the day if I want and that unlike with wax or clay, one gets a natural high look and not shiny or a gel look. I have rather long curly hair and it adds lift and fullness to the crown and frontal areas of my hair which is often pulled a bit flat by the weight of my hair. The product is great. Not only does it have great hold but it washes out easily and when paired with other Forte Series products such as the Argan oil and Sea Salt Spray I can style my hair with ease. I only need to use a small amount so I’m sure it will last for awhile. Not to mention the sleek packaging and inviting scent. Alex and the team have done a great job in delivering a high quality product. The only reason I haven’t given it five stars is the price. Due to international shipping to the UK, the cost was pretty expensive and surmounted to roughly a 1/3 of the entire order. That's pricier than any other product I have bought from the US. This is the best men hair products ever the texture clay works really nicely. I have been looking for good hair products for so long and finally found one that was not good but perfect. The smell is amazing- light but not overpowering. I am sensitive to fragrance but this does not bother me. Every time I use it my spouse comments on the love of the scent. Overall this product works really nice. I don't like to add to much to my thick hair as normal products leave my hair greasy and heavy. The Kerastase left no build up and increased shine which held for days after blow drying and straightening. I tried leaving in overnight before blow drying and blow drying right away. Although results were better blow drying right away. Waiting still gave good results. As someone who suffers from bouts of alopecia related to illness I look forward to seeing how continued use impacts my hair strength. Would definitely recommend.Alex4

This product is my absolute favorite out of the bunch. Once I put this into my hair, I am impressed by how voluminous my hair looks and feels softer than ever. It really starts at the roots and provides a natural boost like no other. I have used other products on the market, such as thickening spray by Tea Tree and Redken, however, Keratase has really exceeded my expectations. It is not only a thickening and lifting spray but it also doubles down as a hairspray to hold down the flyaways and keeps my hair in place. The great features of this product is its ability to instantly lift, hold, and shine once it dries down. I had the chance to try Kerastase Genesis Spray De Force Epaississant Thickening Spray (spritz). To be honest, I really looked forward to using the Spray De Force Epaississant each morning. Firstly because the aroma was just so nice! And also the spray gave my hair a firm hold. These were just side benefits, because the big bonus was my hair just felt fuller. It may have been the combination of this plus the Kerastase Genesis Homme Bain De Force Quotiden (shampoo) I was using, but my hair did feel more thick. One slight bummer was that the Spray De Force Epaississant felt a little more water-ey that my usual spritz, that is to say, my hair felt more wet. I think this is because the spray nozzle sends out the Spray De Force Epaississant in more of a stream than a mist. Once I was used to it, I was able to apply it more evenly, it just didn't dispense the way I expected.DarrenWasHere

I naturally have straight, fine hair. Every once in a while, I'll get a thickening product to help me change up my look. I've been using this the past few weeks and I can say there is a noticeable difference. Is it a miracle product that gives long luscious George of the jungle hate, no. But I use it fur when I want to style my hair in a more natural way. This does give me the extra volume needed. I pair it with the thickening pomade and they work great together. I absolutely love this Thickening 2in1 Shampoo + Conditioner. It has a clean scent, good pump, and thick rich lather. Right now, I'm pairing it with their thickening pomade and the combo is truly a revelation. As someone with thinning hair, things haven't felt this right in a long time. I enjoy the process of styling again and feel confident with how my side part looks. I have been using this shampoo plus conditioner for almost 2weeks now and I have definitely seen some difference in the thickness of my hair. Love how it’s both shampoo and a conditioner, my hair feels soft after wash. I suffer from hair thinning and nothing in the past has worked out for me. But there is hope with this treatment offered by Old spice. I use it along with the their thickening cream. It smells so good! Quantity is great, single pump is sufficient for a wash.
