Best Handheld Vacuum For Carpeted Stairs (2023 Update)

First, the positive: Initially, this was a great purchase. Powerful and lasts for long enough for most jobs, and that's still the case after 3 years. Now the negative: Since about 6 months ago, when starting use after it's been on charge for easily sufficient time to fully charge, it cuts out within about 20 seconds, plug it in for 30 seconds, it works for 20 seconds, plug it in for 30 seconds, it works for 20 seconds, plug in again and it then usually works for some 6 minutes on full power. This is simply a defective unit as the battery is clearly still holding the charge. Wouldn't rush to buy a Dyson again.RobS53

We had a precious model DC34 which served us well until the motor died. We also have a V10 and a Miele plug in for the bigger jobs, and wanted to replace the hand held This gets regular light use .Despite emptying after every use and washing the filter it started pulsing.My wife and I have just spent a quite few hours cleaning the machine.the filter was totally clogged inside and more importantly the interior, inside the shiny perforated cylindrical right up to the cyclones was full of debris /clogged . Bought this to do small pickups after a sweep of the floor, and to clean the car. It's proven handy when doing a bit of DIY around the house, where you can immediately pickup any small debris left from drilling etc. For very quick jobs it's good, but the "standard" power mode is a bit of a joke as it can barely pick up dust let-alone bigger objects like spilled cereal and a bit of dirt. Max power has some decent suction and, with the motorised tool, makes short work of cleaning rugs and carpets, but this only last for around 6 minutes, so again is only good for quick jobs. Like other reviewers, I also had the intermittent power issue, but after following the support video step by step, it started working again – I had cleaned everything else before following the steps, but didn't know about the easy to remove and clean filter. Generally, I find it quite easy to clean and put back together, actually much easier than the dyson cylinder vac (where I have to pull the bin apart to get out the hair). I am a bit torn on this machine, I do like a dyson, and I end up using the handheld on average twice a day, but it could just be a bit better. Given that it is a similar price to the cylinder vac, I was expecting a bit more. A killer feature would be the ability to run it while plugged in – I know this defeats the purpose of the "cordless" handheld, but running out of power when you only have a couple of minutes to go is quite infuriating. Decent vacuum overall. I bought the one with the pet attachment and unfortunately the attachment already broke. Needless to say it will be returned. The battery life is pretty weak. It’s definitely not as good as I was expecting. The filter seems to get quite full. I suppose that’s not a bad thing but it looks cheaply made. They actually recommend you replace every few months or depending on how much you use it. If the pet attachment didn’t break I would hang onto this but I have not even had it 2 weeks and it’s already falling apart. I thought the pet attachment worked good before it broke and the extended nose was nice for tight places and easier on the back.Brizzo

So I actually like how this performs a lot, it works really well and has great suction, a big improvement over my last one. The problem is, there is no indicator to show you how much battery life you have left, and no light to indicate that’s it’s either charging or done charging. I have an older home with some dodgy outlets where you have plug things in a certain way to make sure they’re working. Well there is no way to tell whether this is charging at all, or when it’s done charging. And as I mentioned, no way to know that it’s running out of battery life until it suddenly starts running slower and then shuts off. It’s a major design flaw in my opinion, very annoying and frustrating, and I would not buy it again for that reason. If it had an indicator light of any kind, it might be my favorite handvac. But as it is, I can’t recommend it – unless you don’t care about things like thatTerrydog06

Terrible product. Battery is DOA, won't hold a charge at all. There is no light to even show you whether it's charging. It uses a nonstandard plug for the charging DC voltage, so you can't even swap the charging adapter for another one to test whether that's the issue. I hade another dustbuster that didnt have enough suction so researched and reviewed many to buy another. Black and Decker used to be known as good quality products. I decided to buy this as it was a little higher in the price but was supposed to have good above average power. This is product useless. It has so little suction, I cant even use it in the car or at home. I’ve been using this dustbuster everyday for a few weeks now. I am so happy with this product! This dustbuster has a very long lasting battery life, great suction, easy to empty and is light weight. I use it to clean around my cats litter box, in my car, and for small messes in the kitchen. It works like a charm! If I was to change one thing about this product I would put a lock feature on the button. I have gotten used to pressing the button and it no longer bothers me but see how it could be burdensome for others especially if they have arthritis. I was honestly expecting this to be better than it is. It does pick up some stuff but not like I had hoped for. The suction power is average, just wish it was better and picked everything up. I will say it does charge fast and holds quite a bit. Also it has a magnetic brush head, you can flip up to use or down to not. If this had better suction power it would be awesome. I also want to mention this comes with the piece that you can hang this on the wall which I do like. Honestly, I'd go with another model, maybe a newer one over this one. The suction of this hand vacuum is FANTASTIC! The attachments work very well as well. My only complaint is that the run time is relatively short compared to the time needed to charge – I get anywhere from 15-30 minutes max on a full charge. I mostly use to vacuum furniture, stair carpet treads, and miscellaneous fur on the wood floors so not a big deal but if you need to do a lot more daily vacuuming with this you may be annoyed by the charge it holds. Review update dropping to 3 stars because the vacuum takes a long time to recharge and you’re lucky to get even 15 minutes. I still think the suction is fantastic.Allie

This is a duplicate/replacement for one we bought 26 months ago here at Ace. the old one only holds a charge now for 30 seconds, the new one runs for 15 minutes of use around edges missed when "swiffing" wood floors, cleaning entry mats, throw rugs, touching up area rugs,and dusting sofa cushions, chair seats and the like between vacuumings. Since the warranty runs out in two years, I will definitely complain at 22 months if it loses power that badly again. My old non-lithium powered Dustbusters still hold a useful charge for several minutes after 5-8 years of use!! I expect at least as much from this new Dustbuster with lithium batteries. Great performance when new but I recommend that you mark your calendars for 22 months just in case you need to make a claim if my bad experience with the first one is not rare!anonymous

I can not say enough great things about this hand held vacuum. I vacuum my couch and stairs every couple days with this devise to keep everything fresh and to help with animal hair build up. It never fails to pick up mass amounts of hair, dirt, and dust. The vacuum it self is also great for cleaning out the car, vacuuming base boards and behind toilets in those hard to reach areas. works almost as well as my other more expensive unit. The lack of the plastic prefilter proves it's not absolutely necessary. It only captures larger particles like small leaves and grass. The dust catching HEPA filter gets them and dust too. Battery size is determined by the main motor requirements. I have a third handvac, a Shark. Its battery is 7,2 volts and vac works but not as much air flow as the higher speed units. All HEPA (high efficiency particle accumulation) Filters are specially designed to catch small particles and still allow relatively high air flow. I use a garden hose to clean them–not full blast, just a light spray with enough pressure to clean and turn them white again. The oldest filter is still good and is several years old. Note: when battery won't take a charge its easier to buy a new vac. The battery is a hassle to replace and costs almost as much as the whole new unit. save the filter and filter housing. This cordless has held it's charge for longer than expected. I used it off and on for miscellaneous cleaning two days in a row. I then thought I'd place it back on the charger, not because it was necessary, but I didn't want to be without it. The one disadvantage is that it has a reusable/ cleanable filter. The dust it filters is so fine that I'd prefer to throw it out and save my allergic reactions for bigger problems.Rlhumble

I would gladly give this a 5 star if it weren't for the fact that the power switch is tough to press. Really have to give it some push to get it 'on'. Otherwise I just LOVE it. Had a Dirt Devil before that lasted for many years, well worth the price. This one is even better as it has the quick flip option and really gets into tight spots well. I purchased the Dirt Devil yesterday for for a friend. I liked how the crevice piece is attached. After I charged the unit, I tried to turn it on. The on/off switch is very difficult to use. This in theory is a good product, good suction, HEPA, small so fits well in my tiny house. But the filter is paper and you can't buy the replacement yet. I have a mold allergy, so getting a dirty paper filter wet to clean it repeatedly is not a good idea (when I called technical assistance this is what they told me to do in lieu of buying a replacement filter). After clearning, it only worked for just a few days, then clogged again. So it sits in my house and I sweep instead. Also the collector is super-tiny, though I could live with that. I've had this on my wishlist for some time. The appeal is a small, sleek, yet powerful vacuum that i could easily pick up without fuss. The design, access to small spaces & power made it stand out from the other ugly/clunky choices in the market. Yes, the dustbin is small, but consider that this is designed for small & quick pickups. Excellent vacuum. Works terrific. I use it every single day. You must keep the vacuum clean between each use. I mean keep the filters spotless and the bin and metal filter unclogged. If you dont take care of the vacuum, it wont work worth a darn. But this vacuum has been such a great little tool for picking up dust bunnies, cat food crumbs, and pet hair. The bin can be hard to empty and you will find yourself using your hand to pull out the debris which is pretty gross, and a caveat of the device. The bin is also quite small and you will notice it fills quickly. THERE IS NOWHERE TO BUY NEW FILTER REPLACEMENTS. You sell all the other replacements BUT the OnePwr for some reason. Works great! I own the other style handheld Dewalt vacuum and purchased this one for use in my camper van due to the attachments. The bristled brushes cleans molding without scratching it. The extension makes vacuuming the floor easy on your back. The pointed attachment is great for doing under the seats and hard to reach places.Grant P

This vacuum has good suction and decent capacity. It seems best suited as a small projects vacuum to be kept near your pantry, garage, or around your cars. The tube is sized to fit common small diameter shop vacuum hoses and accessories, so it's nice to not be tied to one proprietary set of fittings. According to the documentation, the filter needs to be knocked clean and can't be blown out with an air hose. It sucked up fine wood dust without redistributing it in the air, but emptying the filter was a little of a pain. It's compatible with all the DeWalt batteries I have, from 1.5 to 6 AH. The motor noise is loud, a little louder than my previous cheapo dust buster, but only slightly. Overall I'm quite happy with this vacuum and hope the long term durability justified the price tag.LTools

I've waited years for DeWalt to make this exact product. I have all the batteries I need and don't need to pay $399 for a Dyson that I have only two 1.5ah batteries on hand to deal with. This vacuum is perfect for around the house, cleaning hard surfaces with the floor attachment, and detailing cars. I will warn anyone that expects a bit too much of a compact vacuum, this will not clean your carpets. It will however clean your 3 year old's spilled cocoa puffs off the carpet without pulling out the Kirby or Shop Vac. 100% would recommend for shop, jobsite, and home. Just arrived and I've only used it once so far, but the suction in the 16V product is so MUCH more powerful than I anticipated – I'm glad I didn't order the 20V version. It charged quickly. I forgot to time how long it lasted, but I got everything done that I wanted to. The blower is out the back instead of the side like my previous handheld which blew the dirt away before you could suck it up. It's also louder than my old one, but seems to have double the suction power, so it's a good trade-off. We have 3 cats and a dog and this handheld got all the hair with no problem. The entry level dustbuster has a grey push button that must be CONSTANTLY held to work. It does not stay on unless you keep your thumb pressed on it. Very difficult if you have small hands or hand disabilities (such as carpal tunnel or anything else that makes ongoing thumb pressure hard). The suction is good. However, in order to use this thing you must hold the on button or tape it down. HORRIBLE design that renders it almost non-functional. Bought it at Target yesterday. Regretting my choice.Quinn

Its great – so long as you keep your expectations realistic. Remember – its a handheld vac, so don't expect the suction power (and therefore, speed) of a Dyson! It's has limited suction power and takes a little more time to get the job done. For my first test, I had spilled some grains of dry rice inside a kitchen cupboard, and this little guy sucked them up in less than a minute – BUT! it took a little patience to get the job done, and that was hard grains on a hard surface (wood). The second test came in the car. It doesn't work so well for soft bits of fluff that can 'cling' to the carpets in the car (in other words, soft dirt on soft surfaces). This takes a little more patience, and is best done using the little brush extension to dislodge the target dirt. By contrast, small hard gravel on the car mats is not a problem. So, in my experience, you need to be patient for bits of dirt that are able to 'cling' to the host material; otherwise, for hard dirt on hard surfaces, it's a piece of cake. I'm an Uber driver, and its primary function is to keep the car clean in-between passenger rides. It's absolutely perfect for that. Small enough to store hidden-away in the side door compartment. After each ride, I check for dirt on the passenger carpets, then break-out the Bissell for a quick vacuum and Bingo! – back to a clean car in no time, ready for the next ride. TOP TIPS: 1. Keep the filter 100% clean, otherwise the suction reduces significantly. 2. Keep it fully-charged using the USB connector that plugs into the car. It needs to be fully-charged to be effective, otherwise it loses suction power. I use it every day, and I love it. One of my best purchases of all time, and – yes – I would buy it again.Curlytop

I use this for my car! It’s great for small messes like debris that ends up on the floors from your shoes! It fits perfectly in my cup holder! It does an OKAY job with pet hair…but i also have huskies so a stronger vacuum like at the car wash are more useful in my case when it comes to pet hair. They’re also not always in my car so it’s not a huge negative to this product. The battery life is also pretty good! My only complaint is how small the collection area is. It doesn’t hold much so you have to empty it quite frequently – even multiple times throughout the use you’re needing it for. For how big and long it is, I would think it would have a little bit bigger of an area to house what you’re cleaning up. Instead, majority of it is the battery/suction mechanics.Mae

Wanted to like this as it looks sleek and seemed like the perfect solution to clean my computer parts. However it is just a 'rushed to market' product with big design flaws that make it a deal breaker: 1) The battery life is a joke – takes 3.5 hours to charge and last only about 5 minutes in use ! This is the biggest deal breaker 2) Suction power is really bad – even for the price. If you add the brush attachment it is further lowered to the extent that this is no better that a plain brush moving dust around rather than vacuuming. I had bought this mainly to clean my laptop and mechanical keyboards and it does not work very well at all. I cannot imagine this being any use at all for any heavier work (ex. cleaning car). Without the brush pulled out it is slightly better and may be able to pull food bits. 3) The dust compartment is tiny – rendering this useless for anything beyond vacuuming fine dust off electronics (and it does not do a satisfactory job of even that) – unless you are OK with emptying out the container every few seconds in the middle of vacuuming 4) The air outlet vent is on the same side as the vacuuming surface. So if you attach the attachment like it is supposed to be attached, it will end up blowing dirt and dust all over the place. It should be in the opposite direction ! Pros: super powerful and works great. Convenient quick flip crevice tool and red stair brush work great together Cons: Overheats really fast and shuts off. Have to wait 30 minutes The cord is not long enough for a full set of stairs unless your outlet is on the stairs. Mine is 3' away and i couldn't get them all without an extention. I want to say it's the most powerful little vacuum I've ever used. I love the power and it does a great job picking up dirt and pet hair. The quick flip crevice tool is great and extremely convenient. And the stairs brush (red attachment) works really well. The black attachment that has bristles seems worthless as the source of the suction is too far from the ground to even collect simple dirt. I got this mainly for my stairs. However the cord is just too short to even do the whole stairway. So you either need an extention cord or you have to unplug half way. I had to do both. It also overheats really quickly, I couldn't even complete the stairs before the thermal protection kicked in. Then you have to wait 30 minutes. I'm never a fan of emptying the canister and cleaning the filter on handheld vacuums, but it seems like a common problem amongst all models I've used. What are you going to do? Wash your hands and prepare to get messy when you empty it because the foam filter will have dirt and hair stuck to it and shaking it will provide you with a lungfull of dirt and get it everywhere. And you will still have to pull the rest off by hand. I recommend emptying it often and using it more often to avoid overheating. Once you feel the unit start to get hot, prepare to have the thermal protection flip and shut off. I would rather that than it burn out the motor or melt the cable. Overall. I'll take this any day over some weak battery operated unit. It's really like a regular vacuum motor stuffed in a handheld unit which is why it overheats. But still. I need something to clean those stairs. I've had to resort to using a broom and this solves that problem. The first time i used it. There was anger because i couldn't complete the stairs in one go. Knowing this, I'll do them more frequently and hopefully it won't overheat. But the extention cord will always make me a little mad.Peege

Solid 4 stars – amazing suction and great brush attachment for getting pet hair off the stairs. The cons: filter is hard to clean off (hair really sticks to it), attachments come off easy during use on stairs/couch, cord is too short (only 15 feet – this isn’t enough to do my full staircase.) Also gives off pretty warm heat during use – sucks when you’re already sweating from working hard cleaning. The last thing I want is hot air blowing on me. My father recommended this Scorpion Hand Vac to me and I couldn’t be happier. I was worried that it wouldn’t be powerful enough for our dogs hair. As many vacuums say they are great for pet hair but just don’t do a good job. I was very pleasantly surprised that it made super quick work cleaning the dog hair out of the carpet on our stairs. It even pulled the hair out of the hard to reach corners. With my past vacuums it would take me about an hour to vacuum and pick the hairs out of the tight corners of my stairs…and they still weren’t clean to my complete satisfaction. The Scorpion Plus cleaned it all up and I was done in less than 10 minutes, heck maybe in 5 minutes. I didn’t even break a sweat. 🤣 I purchased a second one for my daughter for Christmas. I paid $24.99 for this cordless handheld vacuum on sale at last year and can honestly say you won’t find anything better at this price point! My dog takes car rides with me at least 4 times a week; I keep it in my backseat to quickly clean up the shedding. It seems to hold a charge for a while as well! I can’t remember when the last time I charged it was. If I had to improve anything, it would be the nozzle size. It’s not long enough or thin enough to get the hairs from the side areas, between the door and seat. However, I can’t complain at this price! 🙂 The suction is great and cleanup is easy. Overall the vacuum is good at picking up loose debris and the battery charges relatively quick even when connected via USB to my computer. It is easy to charge with a USB-C port using either a computer or a wall charger. It also comes with attachments that make this very handy to have around the house. It does an ok job in cleaning inside a car. I can pick up sand and lose dirt easily, but will have more difficulty picking up hairs and particles deep in the carpet. Some minor things about this product is that you can't take the product out of the stand while it's charging. Also, I wouldn't be too forceful when trying to twist and unlock the canister or removing the filter as most of it is just held together with plastic parts. The vacuum has 2 vacuum modes: regular or max. The regular mode is fine for most jobs. The whining sound from the vacuum sounds like a blender so it's not the quietest. As long as you set your expectations accordingly, this is still above average.Ron4

We put this in our home office to clean up small messes and touch up areas our larger vacuum misses. Since it is so light weight and portable we can carry to anywhere it is needed. It is very futuristic looking and light weight. It has good suction and the two powers is nice depending on what you need it for. The brush attachment worked well for small areas on the floor. The crevice attachment got things out of the edges of the chair seats. The canister and filter were kind of hard to to clean out. The static from the plastic meant everything just stuck to it, especially pet fur. The base is really sleek looking but not very stable. Unless you have it plugged in the vacuum seems like it could easily get bumped and then roll right off of the base. Plugging it in makes it marginally less likely to fall over. We will continue to use it and see if letting the canister get closer to full makes it easier to empty. If being portable is the most important feature this vacuum is for you.JennieBookNerd5

This arrived in box from Sun Joe with a QVC address label slapped on it. Said the 3 piece attached invoice/return label. NO SUCH THING. Had to call customer service for an invoice and return label. Arrived 10 days after my call. Now they say they are going to chg $5.50 for returning this piece of junk. Never had a vac that blew the dirt in all directions and I had to chase it! I broke a fingernail trying to get the thing apart to empty this little bit of dirt. Please people start letting QVC know that they are selling products that are not up to standards which we have a right to expect. Now I had to place the call to get paperwork, now I will have to get this packed up again and than return to P.O. My time and my gas. Beginning to think we are not using our heads. This little vacuum is perfect for small clean up jobs! It comes with a hepa filter that is washable, a small extended nozzle attachment with a brush option, a USB cable charger and a vacuum cap. It takes 4 hours to fully charge, illuminating 3 charge status lights. These lights are nice so you have an idea of how much power you have left in the battery when using it and when you need to soon charge it. I love that the hepa filter is washable, because being a vacuum, those filters can get nasty quick. All you need to do is rinse it out and wait for it to dry and you have a nice clean vacuum again! The true test for this vacuum came after I filled my car with glittery Christmas decorations. We all know that with Christmas ribbon and decor comes the dreaded glitter mess that it leaves behind! When I unloaded my car the back carpet looked like a glitter monster had thrown up back there. The sun joe cordless vacuum cleaned it up like a champ! I was able remove all traces of glitter in no time! The best part is the small nozzle attachment was able to perfectly clean between the dreaded gap between the front seats and the center console! The brush attachment easily slides on the nozzle attachment and locks into place to help loosen those small debries that cling to the carpet. While the little vacuum has many uses, I think it has found its permanent home in my car where its uses truly shine for me! If I had any recommendations, I wish it had a storage bag to keep the vacuum, attachments and charging cord tidy and together. All in all, this is a great tool for small clean ups!Krysta

Cleans great, not too loud, battery life after charge is relatively good' but… the extended wand that picks up small crumbs/items on the breakfast table, furniture pieces, counter and stove top, etc. is most important feature (for me), therein lies my problem with this portable vacuum., When pulled away from body for use, one must engage a finger into the extension. to extend it for use…….this is the achilles heel. The extension snaps the top of my finger nail if when I pull it out for use. Hurts like the devil (no pun intended). So I quickly learned not to close and re-attach it to the body after use; i.e., just let it hang loosely, so to speak. But, when I forget, and place it back in place or my wife has used the vacuum and replaced the extension, I need to use a screwdriver, knife or anything but my finger, to pull it away from body the next time I want to use it. This problem could not have been known prior to purchase. I may have just received a unit from a bad group. But non the less, it is maddening.Howard

I wanted something small and cordless for light jobs and I really loved the attachments that came with this device. But that's where it ends. It barely picks anything up. Very little suction and I mean very very little! I put a fluff on my ottoman, it wouldn't pick it up. Maybe I got a faulty one I don't know. But, I decided to get a corded 10V device that is amazing! Maybe corded or cordless makes a difference.Joie

I love this vacuum! I have a toddler, a cat, and a dog that I’m constantly having to follow around and clean up little messes. I got so sick of dragging my full-size vacuum out for one mess of goldfish smashed into the carpet so I invested in this handheld vacuum and it was the best idea ever! It has 2 suction speeds an extendable nozzle to get in hard to reach places so it really cleans up what I need it to fast effectively! I also love that it’s cordless. Love the pull out extension nozzle for easy reach into corners and around furniture or when cleaning out the car. The two speed on/off button is also very convenient. It is light weight and easy to clean and store on the charging base. I have owned many B&D Dustbusters over the years and this model is much quieter than all the others. I purchased this vacuum t have something that would clean up little messes in my truck, or house (I have kids). This is the perfect vacuum for someone with messy children (all of them) as it conveniently (and effectively) removes messes my children make. We bought this to replace our stand up vacuum since most of our floors are hard. We also use it for minor spills or dirt tracked in a specific spot. I'm surprised at how well this vac works. Most of my tools are Milwaukee, so I think I know quality. For what we paid for this, it works great. It is not hard on batteries, picks up debris well and the attachments are handy. Only two criticisms, one is that the extensions/attachments are not compatible with similar diameter shop vac or stand up vacuum attachments. This means I can't extend the wand or use tools I have from other vacs. The second is that I wish the wand was a little bit longer. I'm 5' 10" and if I have to vacuum the whole house, my back hurts a little from being slightly bent over. My wife is shorter and does not have the issue. However, if I could add one more extension from another vac,…… Or if Bauer sold the attachments separately as well, that would help.Jack

This vacuum uses a flap to hold contents inside the canister. Dust and other items can leak out if you use it for dust/debris around the house. Since they include tools for the floor and crevices, I think it can be marketed as for home use as well. It’s poor in that regard often leaking over the place. It is great for shop use. Clean up small things quickly. Good for using in cars. Run time isn’t crazy but Dyson’s products suck too. (eh, vacuums) 4/5 because it works well but isn’t great around the house and small dust makes it way into the motor area.Luke

I got this as a Christmas present from my dad and it's a great handy vacuum for small jobs. I use it mostly in the house to vacuum up some of the areas my robot vacuum can't reach since its a lot better than my old Bissell standup on hard floors. Plenty of power, but it burns through batteries FAST. It took my fully charged 3.0ah down in about 15 minutes. I really don't suggest using the 1.5ah at all. I'll probably pick up the 5.0ah just for this thing. Only other complaint is how small the dust bin is. It looks big, but the filter section takes up a huge part of the interior space. It's worth it for intermittent use on small jobs which, for all intents and purposes, WAS what it was made for, so it is a good value.Dan
