20 Best Heat Protectant For Blonde Hair (Jan 2023 Update)

I purchased a small bottle at Ulta recently and wasn't very impressed. It makes my hair feel weird after I straighten it (I let the product fully dry on my hair BEFORE straightening it) when I run my hands through my hair, it would feel dry, starchy, crunchy, tight, I don't know how to perfectly describe it, but I do know it's not the best feeling. I'm going to stick with the other heat protectant from this same brand, the orange and white bottle. That UV/Heat protectant isn't as watery as this one, and it is slightly heavier when sprayed, but it dries down light, and makes my hair feel so soft! Not to mention, the smell is SO much better, it lasts a long time too! The only thing this product did do was make my hair appear less frizzy and appear more shiner.Jocelyn

Fine-haired friends — use on wet hair! My hair is fine, recovering from bleach damage, and very prone to oil. I originally followed the instructions and used on dry hair, which was no bueno. It was too heavy and felt greasy. I then tried it on towel-dried hair pre-blow dry and it is AMAZING. I don’t know if it’s intended to work as a primer/detangler, but it’s now a product I can’t be without. My hair dries smooth, shiny, and with NO product buildup or greasy weight to it. The Bumble and Bumble Thermal Protection Mist is one of the best heat protectants out there. The mist allows the product to be evenly dispersed throughout the hair quickly and efficiently. Due to its conditioning properties, this heat protectant de-frizzes and nourishes the hair while also protecting the hair from up to 450 Fahrenheit! The only downside is that the product isn't sold in larger sizes; however, you don't need a large amount of product while using. Would definitely recommend this for anyone that is planning on heat styling their hair.Adrianna G

I ordered three travel/trial size products: Perfect defense, medium hairspray, and the dry texture spray. All 3 are aerosol cans, but the Perfect Defense came broken. It didn’t appear broken but upon trying to spray, it wouldn’t come out of the nozel but leaked out of the top, fizzing. The other two were perfectly fine, and I love them! I don't use heat on my hair daily but when I do opt to sway away from a messy bun, thermal protection is crucial. I've used a ton of different heat protectants and find myself repurchasing this one the most. This Morrocanoil Perfect Defense has 450° protection and is effective at protecting my strands without any residue or weighing my hair down. I absolutely love the scent and while not as strong as other Morrocanoil products, it stays true to their signature scent which is likely my favorite of all haircare lines. The only downfall to this heat protectant is the ingredients. Ether and alcohol are the first two ingredients listed so this may be a deal breaker for some. I did not find this protectant to be drying or adversely affect my hair in anyway. This is actually one of very few heat protecfants where my hair is left feeling soft and healthy without any residue after use.sabrina.s

LOVE this! Leaves my chemically damaged hair so much shinier and softer than most things I’ve tried! I imagine a lot of the bad reviews are from people who are using it on dry hair when it’s meant for wet hair. I have had 2 different Sephora employees recommend this to me when was looking for heat protectant spray to use on hair that’s already dry. I tried it out on dry hair to see if they were right but I wouldn’t recommend it, it definitely left a weird gritty texture on my hair as others have claimed. I’ve been using Drybar hair products for years and was excited to try the Hot Toddy hair protecting spray. Heat styling can cause so much damage so I try to protect my hair the best I can. This spray works well to protect my hair from heat damage! It features a fine mist sprayer so it doesn’t feel heavy on the hair or like I am adding too much product. The scent is nice and soft & similar to that of other Drybar products. I like that I can use this on dry hair to protect my hair every time I use my curler, straightening iron or drying brush. Started using this product today. At first, I really liked it and thought it was nice overall. Then the smell hit. At first, I was like ah this is interesting. Not bad. But then it got worse. I was like why does this smell like this and what does it remind me of? I didn't quite like the smell, and as I used more of it (because the product itself is great), I then realized: it smells like cat litter. I'm going to return it for the coconut scented one and see if that one is better because the product itself is great. Very lightweight, sprays on easily, isn't sticky or tacky or gross. Left my hair feeling great, nice and soft, and actually made styling my hair a lot easier. It was just the smell that turned me off. I have color treated hair and live in Florida so I struggle with frizz. This thermal spray, gifted by Drybar, keeps my frizz maintained, and gives my hair such a gorgeous gloss effect to it! I can't tell you the last time my hair looked this shiny without feeling weighed down. I have fine, blonde hair so it's very difficult to find products that don't make it feel greasy. I used this product on freshly washed, damp hair immediately prior to blow drying. (Instructions say you can use on damp or dry hair) My hair blew dry so fluffy and shiny! And now I know I have added heat protection for when I style it (and from blow drying it) It does have an intense perfume but I think it went away quickly and my hair doesn't smell like it post blow dry. I will add I do use Olaplex shampoo, conditioner and bond strengthener but have been using those products long before trying this product.Rachel

This Perfect Hair Day Heat Styling Spray by Living Proof is a lifesaver for someone that uses heat tools often! I am constantly using my blow-dryer and straightener on my wavy/curly hair and need something that is not just going to protect it from the heat but also leaves it smooth and shiny. This does the trick! The application works well and comes out as a fine mist. I wish the scent wasn't as strong, so I just use the minimum amount for it to cover my hair. I read some other reviews before writing this. Yeah, it's an aerosol. I personally don't care. It's heat protection that imparts massive shine without weighing down hair. It sprays on like hairspray. I use it on clean, damp hair before blowdrying, and wow! Shiny, voluminous hair when I'm done. I haven't used it on dry hair, so I can't tell you about that. I created this account just to leave this review. I love this Aveda product! I have the most awful looking hair texture. The kind that looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket. Never smooth. It looks frizzy and damaged but it's not really. Just a few light sprays of this over my dry hair before a flat iron and my hair is can be transformed to spun silk! It's amazing! I really like this heat protecting spray, it smells great and it looks like it works so far. I started using it 2 months ago, straight after a fresh cut. Normally after about two months, I see my hair getting damaged, especially the ends, but it's not the case this time. I spray it all over my hair before I blow dry (I have curly hair that I blow dry straight in the winter) and on my roots when I need to freshen up with a straightener. I don't have thick hair but it appears like I do because I have SO much hair. It's color damaged and very dry and frizzy so I either need to add curling cream to get my waves or fully blow dry it straight. I used to use the Bb repair blow dry cream and that made my hair silky after a blow dry. This product left me with a residue on my hair I can feel. I was on TIK TOK late one night, as usual, and came across a hair dresser that recommended the Verb Ghost line shampoo, well one thing led to another and I found that Ulta has a starter kit that included the shampoo, conditioner, prep, and oil. So because it was such a great deal, I ordered a kit and added their deep conditioner because who doesn't like having a deep container to try as well. While I waited 3 days for my order to arrive, I allowed my hair to get as dirty as possible. If I was going to try this line, I wanted to get the full effect on the first use. The order finally arrived and I ran to the bathroom like a giddy school girl that couldn't wait to try this product line. Let's talk packaging! It is simple but high end. To be honest, the name Ghost and it being a black bottle, is what originally won my goth little heart! The smell was about average for salon quality hair care, which is great because I knew it wasn't filled with a bunch of artificial fragrances. I did my usual lather rinse repeat, followed with the deep conditioner that I let sit for 5 mins, towel dried my hair, added a little squirt of the Verb Ghost Prep through out my whole head, combed out, then added 2 pumps of the oil to my ends. Now usually that is where I stop because I HATE blow drying my hair. But today was different and I needed the results ASAP. So I grabbed my blow out brush and started at work. The results? My hair was so healthy and shiny! It smelled so good, felt amazing, and it actually had some volume! This stuff (when used sparingly) didn't make me feel weighed down at all. And because my hair is so long, usually most products make my hair feels so heavy and feels like it left a gross film on my strands. Now I will say, don't use the Prep if you want to air dry your hair. I have done it a couple times now, and it leaves my hair kind of crunchy feeling towards the roots. I Love love love. I just used this last night and super pleased with the results. I have very fine hair and it does not weigh it down or feel greasy like others posted. It has a nice scent too. So many hair products have silicone which over time coats the hair but not allowing moisture in and can leave build up and dry hair from inside out. This hair product has none of the bad stuff and leaves my hair feeling nourished and protected. After much research, I bought Olaplex 6 + 7 and Kerastase Ciment Thermique at the same time. At first, I liked Olaplex more, until I found myself reaching for the Kerastase more and more until eventually, I exclusively only reach for the Kerastase. Olaplex definitely has a more silicone feel and more slip. My hair gets oily pretty quickly so it wasn't the best for my hair. Kerastase on the other hand…WOW. This stuff makes my hair noticeably more shiny and less frizzy, with no greasy or oily feeling. The second day hair is just as good, if not better! I have been heat styling every other day for 4 months and I credit this product as the reason my hair still doesn't feel or look damaged. This product is on the pricier side but it is worth every penny and a little goes a long way. I received this product as a free sample box from @bzzagent It’s a heat protectant and moisturiser so I don’t burn my hair any more. I have medium length, wavy, thin, dry hair, color-treated and prone to frizziness. First off, this product smells absolutely amazing and it lasts all day long. First of the scent is amazing. It’s citrusy but not over powering and leaves my hair smelling fresh all day long. It has a creamy texture that applied nicely to my damp hair and didn’t make my strands sticky or weighed Down. I love that I can put this in after the shower and then blow dry my hair and it is extremely silky smooth and shiny. It has helped tremendously and I absolutely love styling my hair now. I have purchased and repurchased the @evanyc Mane Magic 10-in-1 primer so many times. I always loved the way it gave shine to my hair and protected it from the continual blow dry. I did notice that, though it didn’t claim to, it did cut down on my dry time a smidge. I think something about the moisturizing oil ingredients helped to wick away the water. Anyway, this product does everything the Eva NYC Mane Magic does…except even better! It smells SO good. I wish I could describe the scent, but I can’t put my finger on it. It’s perfume-like without being too much. It has an excellent fine mist that makes even distribution a breeze. My hair is even shinier and less frizzy than with the Eva NYC. This product really does reduce dry time! I was blown away, lol honestly! I have very thick, full, medium length hair that typically takes a half hour to blow dry (that’s after the towel and air dry for a half hour). With this, it’s more like 15-20 minutes. That’s a huge difference for me! Also, my hair feels smoother when I use this, and I haven’t noticed any weigh down on my roots when I use this all over. I received this complimentary RedKen Styling Blowout VoxBox from Influenster and RedKen for my review. I received RedKen Quick Blowout and RedKen Big Blowout. These two work so great together! My hair has never been as straight, frizz free and shiny as it does with RedKen Quick Blowout. My dry time is cut in half with this one and I was impressed. My hair is curly/ wavy and tends to have quite a bit of frizz. If I add the RedKen Big Blowout right before my hair is dry. It gives me the instant volume, sleekness and shine I would find from flat ironing! No flat iron needed, however with the added heat protection why not 😉 My hair feels soft, smooth and looks frizz free and shiny all day. And they smell amazing! I never write reviews, but I had to for this. This is the worst product I've ever used in my entire life. As I am writing this I'm trying to get a brush through my hair after drying it with this product. It took me twice as long to blow dry it because it just turned into one big knot. I know how primers work because I've use the L'Oreal one multiple times with no issue. This made my hair dry, knotty, and extremely hard to blow dry or straighten. I'm going to have to wash my hair again after just washing it to get this product out of my hair. I don't know what the deal is with Redken or Ulta but it seems like the Redken products that I bought from Ulta recently have been terrible. My hair has never felt healthier in all my years of using protectants. Joico is a fantastic brand, and IronClad was phenomenal. Their new Hero with added shine is still difficult for me to adjust. I have long thick wavy hair that gets dry easy. I wash with all soft redken brand shampoo/conditioner. While wet, I add "United" Redken all over and I normally let it air dry (blow drying works fine too) I use hot tools at its highest setting (450) to straighten my hair. I would take sections, spray iron clad directly on my hair and style, and immediately after, my hair felt soft, light and never did more with it. Just perfect. Hero adds a gloss that makes your hair feel heavier in the beginning. I've adjusted by using less, spraying further away, but the results are the same. It's like my hair has to dry all over again. I still recommend this product since they no longer make my beloved IronClad. But just be warned, if you don't have dry hair, this will make your hair appear oily. Just remember, it locks in moisture (as it should) so for those of us with very dry hair, it still is a great purchase to makeEmpress86

I use hot tools after every wash – whether just the hair dryer when I leave my hair curly, or blow dryer and straightener – so I use a lot of heat spray to protect my hair. I've been in search of a clean heat protectant and this stuff is awesome! I've found that with my current aerosol spray, it really lingers in the air and I end up breathing in so much of it. This one does not linger in the air, which is a huge bonus. I've only tried it a couple of times so far, but it's really nice. It works really well and smells great too, but not too strong. It has a light, fresh scent. It is a very wet spray, so you just have to be careful not to spray too close to the hair, and wait a second for it to dry a bit before using a hot tool directly on the hair. I don't understand why Bondi Boost has their product reviews all meshed together in one, but this review is specifically for the Bondi Boost HEAT protectant. I just purchased my second bottle and something about this bottle is different than the first. I hate it. It's awful. It smells like windex and kind of looks like milky windex. Very odd. The first bottle I purchased back in September had mostly clear liquid inside. I even reached out to BB and they confirmed the milky purple/bluish color is normal with their modified formula. I have shoulder length platinum blonde hair, but a good 3-4 inches of my natural hair for a lived in blonde look. This makes my blonde feel waxy and almost crunchy. I don't understand why because my hair isn't damaged by any means, but something in the new formula doesn't agree with color treated hair, specifically blonde. I've seen other reviews with others having the same issue. So, if you have color treated blonde hair I'd give this one a hard pass. I'm bummed because I love that it's free of alcohol, silicone and other harmful chemicals found in just about every heat protectant on the market.Kait

I purchased this product since I was looking to try a new brand of heat protectant. I really liked the scent, but I don't know that it is super effective for my hair. I found it odd that the instructions said to apply to dry hair, and I blow dry my hair so I ended up using a different heat protector on my wet hair. I used this prior to straightening my hair and it smelled good, but I guess hard to tell if it is effective since my hair still experienced the same issues with frizz/dryness that I did prior to using this. This formula smells pretty nice and did seem to do a decent job helping to protect the hair. It added a little bit of shine as well. However, I do wish it helped to smooth the hair and control frizz better. I mostly liked to use it if I needed to refresh my hair and restyle especially if I was on second-day hair. I would spritz some product where needed and touch up with a blow dryer to smooth and style my hair again. I also used it when I needed to touch up my daughter's hair and preferred using it over plain water or a detangler spray. I'd probably only repurchase this for use on my young daughter's hair, it will be nice to protect her hair for when we have to blow dry it as well. Like: the smell- it’s delish! Dislike: The stickiness/residue of it afterwards. If I got any on my hand, it would stick and feel not so great. Also, make sure to brush/comb your hair as soon as you spray it. I found that it kind of hardened if not brushed/combed out properly. Still trying it out- so I can’t see for sure if it’s working or not just yet. Definitely better than not using a heat protectant at all. My hair has never looked so good! I love it. I use it before I curl or straighten my hair and I only use it on the last 4-5 inches of my hair. The first time I tried it, I thought it was going to be really oily but it dries as you go and leaves the hair soft and smooth, and a nice finished look. I do like this, works good when you do not over spray. Can be very greasy on finer hair types so use sparingly. A little goes a long way with this product. This product should be discontinued by the smell alone. The product itself seems to he ok for hair. The one and only time I used it, it did make my hair feel a lot more moisturized. But the smell…TERRIBLE!! It smelled so bad but despite the smell, I still tried it in hopes that it would go away. Well this made me sick. Trigggered migraines that lasted days. I love this Cantu heat protectant spray! It smells wonderful, sprays evenly and lightly and the bottle seems to last me a long time. I feel as though my hair is well protected with this thermal shield. I use it before diffusing my naturally curly hair, or before straightening. It is great value for money. PROS – I an very sensitive to smells and the fragrance wasn't overpowering. CONS – The product becomes sticky once it's on the hair for five minutes. I didn't like how my daughter's hair turned out using this product. I usually add jojoba oil to wet hair (natural) then blow dry then flat iron. I replaced the jojoba oil with this heat protectant. It caused fly always while leaving the hair "puffy". Not sure how to describe but I just threw the entire bottle away.Bernadette

This isn't a bad product by any means, and it does the job in terms out protection. But, for those with who struggle with products weighing heavily on their hair, I'd avoid this and save the money. Lets start with the ONLY "con"- my local Ulta doesn't always have it in stock. I have very curly, somewhat frizzy hair and I live in Texas so the humidity makes my hair completely unmanageable. I recently had several inches of hair cut off, my stylist used Trilliant before she used the blow dryer and a second slight mist before straightening my hair. My hair has never looked or felt better! I wrote down what product she used on me and went directly to Ulta to pick it up. Since that day myy hair is smooth, shiny, has no frizz and when I straighten it I don't have the frazzled 'too much heat' look on the ends. This product is great! I use it to help protect my fine, curly, color treated, prone to breakage hair from heat tools. It is a pricey item being anywhere from $16-$19 a bottle. If I'm using it almost everyday during the week the bottle could last me 4-6 weeks. (I have long hair) Just keep that in mind when purchasing this product. I feel it's worth every penny though. I'm a low income woman but this is one product I go back to again and again. One other thing, it does feel a little sticky in your hair when you first spray it I usually spray this product in my hands and rub it in between them in order to not have that feeling as much, but after you use your hot tool that feeling goes away! I allow my hair to mostly air dry before spritzing and using a styling blow dry brush. It smells okay and works okay but is nothing to rave about. If I use too much, it can feel a bit sticky. This is not a particularly moisturizing product if that is something you need to take into consideration. The shimmer content, while observable when shaking the bottle, does not appear to do much for my hair. For the price, I definitely think I can do better. Any product that has the word “primer” in it gets my attention as it feels like something that is put on before adding anything else serves a purpose especially before applying heat. I think that when it comes to hair, we often don’t think to add a primer or heat protective item but definitely it keeps from heat ruining your hair. I haven’t been doing much to my hair separate from washing and having it in a messy bun. For this review, I blew dry my hair and used the priming spray but since getting this in the box, I spray my hair with it even if I will be air drying it. I have noticed it makes my hair smell great and hydrates it a bit. I don’t know if that was any intention but I will continue to use it that way as it works for my hair type. So with the heat protection spray I do like it. I don’t spray so much of it mostly when my hair is damp because when it’s dry like it just makes my hair feel very heavy. anyways I did try it both ways wet hair and dry hair just to see what works best for me. My experiences with this were positive not so much negative may be just like a little bit I have thin fine hair and it’s also oily so a little bit of everything and any product goes a long way I do know that because of the changes in season and I do require to use a little bit more so this would be very helpful for me during the winter because in the summer my hair heats up really bad because of the sun and it’s just I live in his dry state so he protection and I do straighten my hair a lot it does not really go with me. A little bit of a use I do get out of it but in the winter that is when I will definitely be using it to the max but other than that my hair did become heavy after a long day I’m not gonna say it so much light weight but it did make me feel good for a while with nice hair and it does smell good. Other than that I did like it but not so much love it it is something I will continue to use and add to my routine as the seasons change. elizeth.s

I can't lie, I was really blown away by this line. Although I really wanted to give a good review on how well this straightened and retained my hair, I can't really say. I applied this I let my hair mostly sure dry in twists, then I proceeded to blow my hair out. I then straightened my hair. No other products were required to straighten my hair and it came out very silly and beautiful, by it didn't last😩. By the next day, the exterior layer of my hair had already swollen up. While this product DOES protect from heat damage (I tested some strands that remained straight, and they retained their curl after rehydrating), it does NOT help to retain the style or defy any humidity. I do not think this system, overall, does very well retaining heat styles or defending against humidity. I didn't get past more than a day before my hair swelled up from humidity. BUT, ill also point out that I experienced swelling on the outer layer of my hair, but underneath it was still straight, which was a new occurrence for me, and I was impressed. That meant I had less hassle to put up with to re-style it, which I did using perm rollers. All in all, I would t recommend this product individually.tre.l

I love this stuff. I spray my whole head and then brush it before I use my curling iron. It seems to help hold the curls and I don't use any other hairspray after. It's not crunchy or sticky at all. I love that it has thermal protection since I usually curl my hair. You can't even tell there's hairspray in my hair after I'm done curling. I make sure to spray it about 8-10 inches away from my head so I don't blast too much on. It has a nice fine mist so I usually don't use a lot and a bottle lasts me a long time.mattspunkingurl

Starting with the PRO, this spray is awesome after you have styled your hair, particularly with some curls that you want to hold yet you don't want to use stiff hairspray. You could run your fingers through the curls or tousle a little bit as you spray all around your hair. It is an awesome finishing spray! However, the big Con is that it absolutely, positively is an NOT a good thermal styling spray. Some of the positive previous reviews said this product made it shiny and held either a straightener or curling iron pass over. So I sprayed it on my blowdried hair and went ahead and curled my hair with a curling iron. I didn't notice at the time, but at some point later in the day I thought I smelled burning hair. I happen to shower again later that evening and after the shower as my hair fell in my face, without a doubt it was burnt hair smell! I noticed the next morning that a large section of hair just to the right of my temple was gone, maybe an inch'ish away from the scalp! My stomach sank, my face became clammy! That feeling of horror set in. With that said, I honestly have no problem continuing to use the product as a finishing spray, because it is THAT good specifically for that purpose. But please heed my warning – do NOT use as a thermal styling spray!!!LouLou

I was looking for a heat protectant I could use on my fine color-treated hair that would not alter my color or cause product build-up, be sticky or tacky, and would be versatile! I wanted something I could use on damp or dry hair to protect it from heat and this product is great! I use this on damp freshly shampooed and conditioned hair after I put in an anti-snap product and lightweight oil (pre-blow-dry). Before drying I spray a light even mist over my hair and comb through and section off to blow dry. The results are amazing. My style lasts beautifully, feels like silk, and second-day hair requires a slight flat iron touch up (if that for my long bangs). I have no tangling while drying or after, I have no sticky tacky feeling (which is why I hate "hair sprays") except for very few products (one from Kenra (medium hold) and one from a brand not carried by Ulta) when needed. I cannot say enough good things about this product and appreciate the advice I received from one of the Senior Stylists at the Kildeer, IL location who recommended this product. I took advantage of an amazing sale on this product and am well stocked 🙂 If you are looking for a great product that works well on damp or dry hair for heat protection with some styling benefits, I would give this a try!LMT
