The safe worked OK for a time. After leaving the door open while in storage for about a year, I installed new batteries and I placed some items into it, but the door would not close and "latch". Finally got rough and got it closed. Then IT WOULD NOT OPEN! Tried my combination, tried factory original combination, and tried the "key". After repeating these efforts 5 or 6 times, the handle broke off! Tried to call SentrySafe and gave up after 25 minutes waiting for connection to a real person. Emailed a request for help on the SentrySafe website, but no response. After a few days without Sentry feedback, I needed some items in the safe, so I drilled and sawed a large hole in the back of my safe. Got what I needed, but had to destroy this "safe"! Perfect size safe…170 pounds is nice and heavy and able to be placed in areas where it will take some time to move. Comes with bolts to secure to floor. My safe arrived and the digital combination keypad had a problem where it wouldn't open so the customer service team walked me through steps of cleaning battery terminals trying different sets of batteries then to finally ordering a part to replace. The safe comes with a key so thankfully I can still use it. I wish the safe was working the way it should when I received it. I am now waiting for 2 months for the part to come in. I purchased an Executive Safe a few years ago and am happy to share that this has been a great little safe. It is small enough to be installed in a closet, yet has sufficient space for storing important documents, a couple of handguns and jewelry. I am so happy with my decision to purchase a SentrySafe! It has high ratings for being fireproof and waterproof. The digital combination was easy to program. It’s great to be able to program a second code so an additional family member can have access in emergencies. An interior light can be programmed for 30 or 60 seconds. Plenty of time to move documents in and out. This uses 4 AAA batteries for the digital combination and the interior light, which are accessible from the outside of the safe. There is plenty of room for file folders, a separate key locking removable tray inside, and hooks on the inside of the door along with a pocket for passports and smaller flat items. This is a wonderful alternative to paying for a safety deposit box at a bank, along with the fact you can have access any time! I would definitely recommend this purchase.Madeleine
The safe arrived timely and as expected. The product itself is clearly of the highest caliber and other than my own error is getting it set up, it is exactly what we needed and wanted. I managed to mismatch the AAA batteries and apparently a couple were dead. so initially I couldn't get the electronic lock to work. I called the Sentry help number and other than a bit of a wait (30 min), the technician was very helpful, kind and patient with me while I went to get some other batteries. Once newer batteries were installed, the lock worked perfectly. My compliments to the technician as he went above and beyond answering a couple of questions re; protection offered from fire. We live 5-6 miles from the Bloomfield, CO wildfire that occurred on Dec. 30, and although the safe will not protect in an inferno of such proportions, it just makes sense to do what we can to protect our valuables. I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this safe. I got high ratings from people, even those that have experienced a fire loss. The only thing that I am not crazy about is the plastic handle. It feels flimsy like it would break. There was a dent on the top of mine when it was delivered, but because it really doesn’t affect anything important, I didn’t return it. The $50,000 insurance for documents requires that you provide a value for each item. That is an impossible task. Items such as birth certificates, passports, etc. Have no dollar value exactly. I’m not sure how a buyer is supposed to value such things. It should also be made very clear that the unit pack is not garbage. It is needed to keep moisture out of the safe. This is the first safe I've purchased. It's made well, but the outside is plastic, so I wonder how long that lasts in a fire. It has a good combo lock with a key override. It has a good amount of room. It had a small gouge in the plastic side from shipping (like a screwdriver went into the side). I bought this safe for its size and features. I received the safe by mail in 2 days as indicated on the website at the time of purchase. Being that I've only had the safe since Friday, July 13, 2018, I can only give you my initial impression of the safe, its packaging, and shipping. A better review for the safe would be made after 6 months or a year to express likes and/or dislikes, but I will consider this an "initial review". My initial impression of the safe is that it is as advertised and works as shown in the manual. The only long term concerns I have are for the digital locking mechanism, and plastic locking lever. As for packaging the safe was boxed pretty basic with polystyrene molded foam at the top and bottom. The only thing that surprised me was that the digital lock and bolt lever did not have any foam protection. Considering the size, shape, and weight of this boxed safe it's easy to see how these safes get damaged during delivery. Suggestively, I think the box should have handholds to aid in handling. My safe does have minimal dents and dings of which I'm not concerned because this safe is not going to be a show piece in my house. I can say that a few of the dents found on the bottom of the safe occurred before it was packaged. All things considered it seems to be a good. As far as shipping goes I received the product as indicated in 2 days. The packaging/box was in pretty good shape, which is impressive for the aforementioned comment. So far so good.Stephen1234
I found this safe perfectly meets our needs such as manageable size, fire-proof and water-proof abilities (although I didn't test those criteria being claimed). The only negative but important issue is its lock system. First of all, the plastic handle is a bit fragile. The number system is pretty easy to resolved if someone continues to try all combinations once entering the house. I hope there is a limited number of trials then the door will be locked for say 60 minutes before the second trial.Yoko
I generally like the safe and have other sentry safes but this one I was disappointed with b/c the handle is very plasticky and feels like it could literally break b/c it's weak despite the rest of the safe feeling quite robust. When I punch in the code it sometimes doesn't open b/c the handle won't go down! I have to do the code again and try to jiggle the handle or maybe i need to twist the handle in a specific way and be consistent with that method… I would have expected an otherwise excellent product to have one very important user interface to work smoothly, reliably and to feel great since that is a major point of feedback to the user and having a cheap, weak handle really makes the user experience not ideal. So Sentry Safe, i'm sure you can invest a little extra into the handle design and win back my satisfaction. But the rest of the safe feels very good, solid, hinges move smoothly. The LED light that turns out when the door opens is very nice touch. The ability to turn off the beeping noise when entering a code is great (vs my other safe which doesn't do it as far as I could find in manual or online). I read some reviews on this that complained of the white residue inside the box and the locking mechanism. There was a small amount of residue, which I believe was the fire retardant material. It was such a small amount that it did not matter to me. The locking mechanism works OK, but care must be taken to not close the lid with it in the locked position or it could be broken. The lock is not for theft prevention in my opinion but to close the box tightly in the event of a fire. The box is heavy and a handle would be nice, but I do not intend to move it much. Overall I like the size and the fire resistance, the heavy weight is as a result of the fire resistance nature of the box The size is also good for a variety of items..apddeanwyoming
This is a very nice file box. It is heavy, so you won't be moving it around too much. Put it in a secure place and leave it there. I hope I never have to test the fire resistance quality of this box. I would have give it 5 stars, but you can not leave this box unlocked and remove the key. I am only keeping important papers in it—not jewelry or cash. I can only remove the key if the box is locked. I would leave the key in the box, but I own a similar box and it fell over and broke the key in the lock and I am afraid the same would happen to the key to this box too.Ronald
The safe certainly serves its intended purpose. However, it's heavy. Being heavy and slippery, it really needs handles to pick it up and carry it. Other than that, only minor issues. The label on the inside was peeling off upon arrival. I took it off and attached it to a piece of paper since it didn't have a prayer of staying on the inside cover and I didn't want it to fall off and get stuck to papers I put in the safe! The key lock isn't a lock, more like a latch. It's not for security, it's for fire safety so don't expect top security. The file folder rails are built in but the description isn't clear. I just purchased two safes and they were out on the porch for a few weeks in the original shipping containers with the average temperature around freezing. Once unpacked neither one could be opened as the handles would not turn or if you forced them they would buckle. Then the combination dial jammed. I called tech support and they could not help me and suggested replacing them. I put them inside the house and once they warmed up they worked perfectly. I suspect the lubricant froze or was so stiff it made the mechanism unusable. Please look into this as the safes will not open unless warm. The safe is well-constructed, and has reasonable organizing accessories (file drawer, small items drawer, key hooks, small items bin). The combination and key locks both worked well, and the instructions were adequately clear on how to dial in the combination. It is big and heavy, but with a little ingenuity it is not too heavy to horse into a concealed location for bolting down. As a fire safe, it's probably pretty good, per its ratings. But unless you hide it very well, don't rely on it as a security safe, in spite of its impressive appearance. The exterior skin is thin sheet metal, less than 16 gauge. The interior skin is plastic, and the assembly can be drilled into in a heartbeat. I popped off the (plastic) inside panel of the door for a look, and saw plastic tumblers for the combination lock, and most combination lock hardware to be die-cast zinc alloy. (This included the six impressive-looking door locking bolts.) Another small point: The safe would be more useful if it were just about 1 inch deeper. This would provide room to stack .50 cal ammo cans in it, oriented front-to-back. These are great units for protecting, compartmentalizing, and organizing valuables ("Tupperware for men"), but they don't quite fit in this safe.HardTarget
This was a replacement for another safe. Opted to choose a traditional dial combination lock; electronic/keypad system failed on the other safe, making it a giant doorstop. The lock system is easy to use; the addition of a key to supplement the combination was a nice feature. The construction of the safe is very solid with heavy grade materials. The interior is vary spacious and with additional trays (purchased separately), organizing items is simple. The UL rating for the safe was good enough for my needs, with the hope that it never needs to be tested. Overall, the size, price, and quality of components made the decision easy.Shimmy

Compared to fireproof safes, this one is rather light and if not secured down, could easily be hauled away by an unwelcome visitor. So, if you secure it down, it certainly would make it more difficult for a thief to easily run off with your valuables…certainly more secure than just throwing valuables into a drawer. I bought this safe with (in store pick up ) Ok sounds good it was a great deal and I wanted one for years. I NOW realize why they want to charge $300 for shipping. Upon calling about the item for pick up … I asked the height of the box laying down ( I estimated 10 inches more than the specs) They could not provide me with a size. Second I asked when the pick up time would be best because It just snowed here on my scheduled pick up time and I will not drive my truck in a snow storm with a 500 lb safe in the back (secured). I then asked since it was I.S.P who would help load. She said no one. After being dumbfounded a moment I said so no one will help me bring it to my truck. She says per new policy and injuries we upped the delivery charges and do not help people bring items outside or into vehicles. Cool so my 5'7" 155 lb self will go ahead and toss the thing onto my shoulders and load it in my truck. Not happening. So now I am stuck with no help from them other than clicking a button that the item was sold and picked up. The fire rating and the water rating are excellent for the price, you just can't beat it. I was looking at a smaller safe with a lower water and fire rating when I stumbled on this deal in BJs while shopping for food. But it! You won't regret it! The door swings open a full 180 degrees! Terrific all around safe. Sure, it's not a tough as the high end safes on the market, but you're not spending $5-10k either. Will keep your typical 17 year old punk burglar out for hours. Always thought biggest is best, but after having delivery professionals from a safe company come to my house, they were able to tell me otherwise. Heavy enough that it's not going anywhere, but won't collapse your staircase moving it in either. (It is very heavy, though.) Have no idea how effective fire or waterproofing is, thankfully. However, my old safe which was the same type and bought from same place eight years ago, failed to alert me about the battery and it died. Ordered a safe that was described as " fireproof and waterproof". The safe I got was no more than a glorified filing cabinet. It wasn't very secure. You can bend the door to get into it. I sent and email telling them it wasn't secure and their answer was. We wi take off $20 and for me to try to sale it to someone local. I wouldn't put name on this cheap junk . I had ordered it for a customer who wanted it. I was embarrassed when I opened it up and saw it. It was supposed to weight 50 pounds. The postal sticker on the box said 35pounds.

The safe itself is great, but the handle and combo plate were falling out of their places when it arrived. The handle easily comes out again if you pull at all when it is locked. I pushed the combo plate back in, but the combination wouldn't work because there are 4 ways the combo plate could have been re-inserted. It needs to have only 1 way and shouldn't come out so easily. Anyway, after a couple of tries, I got the combo plate inserted in the right position and the combination worked. The "clicks" and combo (and therefore the locking mechanism) feel extremely cheap and both the handle and combo still come out if you pull on them.ShawnMc

This feels like a very durable piece, and you can feel simple double walled construction. I think it would hold up reasonably in a very short fire, but is surely not rated for anything significant. If your house goes down in a blaze, nothing will survive in this box. Heck, if just the closet goes up in a blaze, contents will probably be crispy. Also disappointing is the lock. This is _not intended for security against theft_. The lock is for show, and for keeping out polite individuals. I picked the lock on the first try within 5 seconds. It could be done with paperclips, easily. As a result of these factors, I'm not entirely sure what this box solves compared to any other solution. I have little room in my apt for storing a large box & needed something small that would still hold standard paper sizes flat (not folded), be made out of steel (not plastic) to be fireproof and would lock. I wanted something approx 9"x12"x 4". There weren't any security boxes at all at the Wake Forest Rd store when an employee took me to the shelves. He said it was a small store & we'd have to go to a larger one. He didn't try to find anything online that would meet my criteria and offer to order anything for me. I don't drive & don't have a car so I have to pay a reliable agency to provide drivers. The driver's service time is $35/hr & mileage is .50/mile after the first 10 miles. So this was an expensive & wasted trip. After we left my driver checked online to find an item number & picture of the box that would best meet my needs. The web site said the Staples store in Cary had it. However, it wasn't on the shelves & the security boxes there weren't suitable. The customer service employee we spoke with didn't check the shelves himself in case we missed something and he didn't look online to find another box that matched my criteria. Finally he looked at the online info provided by my driver and ordered what I wanted. This was another expensive trip in terms of transportation! Although I was pleased with the box that was shipped to me, this experience was very strange in terms of product availability and customer service.
