20 Best Messy Look Hair Product (Feb 2023 Update)

I debated purchasing this product due to the instructions would have you apply it to dry hair. I finally took the plunge and am so happy I did. I applied this product to wet/towel dried hair and the dry down is awesome. I have fine hair but a lot of it cut in layers. I finger styled my hair upon applying, letting it air dry then ran my fingers through to fluff from the underside and didn't touch it the rest of the day lasting all the way through my 8 hour shift even withstanding the wind. It left my natural body/spiral curl hair soft to the touch not crunchy as you would expect with this type of hold without weighing it down.happyhoosier

This product is very nice for creating texture. It’s not at all sticky like some other texture products. You just need a little bit on your fingertips and then scrunch into your hair. I have short, fine hair and the product that I had been using for years must have changed an ingredient which made it sticky like glue! So I had to go on the search for a replacement! I tried this and it works pretty well so I won't be returning it. It's not sticky or heavy and it gives my hair the texture and shine that it needs. I must add that I still need to use hairspray to keep my style all day and the smell at first does remind me of deodorant, but the smell does go away once it goes on my hair.Karen

I have shorter hair that does well with styling and I usually use a pomade or a wax to do my hair so this is a new product for me. It's a lot thinner in consistency than I'm use to, almost like a gel. I had great hold without feeling really stiff or sticky so I really like that aspect of the product. The one thing I didn't like was the smell. I would prefer a more cologne scent but this reminds me of a pine smell. It's not very appealing. I like a classic men's scent. Other than that I loved how it styled my hair and the product will last a long time as you don't need a huge amount to get the desired affect. The Garnier Fructis Liquid Pomade has become a staple in the 2 weeks since I have had it. I have used pomade hair styling products before but they either did not have enough lift or they would leave my hair feeling dry and flaky. Not to mention they would also leave my hands with residue that always took forever to take off. The liquid pomade did no such thing. First of all I have thick, curly hair that can be difficult to tame and style. I also suffer from dryness of the scalp when I put products on it so at first I was skeptical when trying the Garnier Fructis Liquid Pomade but boy was I wrong. I would use a nickle size amount of product (I have a lot of hair) and I would apply it and comb it. It would work almost immediately. It gave me enough time to style it and make sure I liked it before it would harden. The best thing is that it provides around 10 hours of support, which to me is enough. IT would not leave my hair feeling cardboard hard and it would not flake off and make me look like I had walked through a snowstorm. It also did not leave my hands with a weird residue. The product smells great and it did not leave my hair frizzy. Now I can just get up, get dressed, comb my hair, add the product and just leave without having to worry. As a daily user of hair product, I like trying out different types to see how they make my hair look, ease of use, as well as what they smell like and their consistency. I wear my hair very short on the sides with about 6 inches of length on the top. Different days often call for different hairstyles! Garnier Hair Care Fructis Natural Look Liquid Hair Cream gives hair a natural look after drying and leaves a light hold. The product is a slippery, white cream with a fragrance similar to the original Herbal Essences shampoo so it's quite pleasant. Immediately after applying, it does feel sticky. You definitely have to wash your hands immediately after application. Once the hair cream dries, almost all the stickiness is gone and it maintains a light hold. Depending on the length of your hair, the hold will not be as long if hair is constantly manipulated, so hands off once dry for a more groomed look. Shorter hair with generous product will have a bit of a wet look after drying, while longer hair or hair with less product will look more natural. This will easily achieve a more laid back weekend look as opposed to the 'Mad Men' board room look.emalye1

This thickening spray is amazing! I have not tried this as a heat protectant spray, I’ve only used this as a hairspray for my curls. I can’t attest to whether this protects as a heat protectant spray, or whether this thickens hair. I’ve worn my hair curly and I already have thick hair! I will say this clumped my curls beautifully!!! The smell is amazing, I got compliments every-time I’ve used this spray. I plan on using this as a heat protectant spray in the future. I think this would be amazing for curly girls who wear their hair in a ponytail or wants their curls to clump! It kept definition in my curls when paired with a gel and leave in. Just got this a couple days ago from #sephora couldn’t hardly wait to try it. I used a generous amount, in sections, on my damp hair (right after the shower….wash day) and let my hair air dry half way, then followed the rest by blow drying it with my on low force, but medium heat. Oh. My. Gawwwww. This stuff is amazing. My hair felt, looked, AND stayed “thick”! It wasn’t sticky or crunchy like most thickening sprays and it smells soooo good. It actually made my hair extremely soft and manageable. It looked healthier, shinier, just overall……beautiful. Now I completely understand why #oribe had products that are a bit pricy; they’re literally top of the line. If you’re a thin haired girl like me….go get this! This has been the best hair product I've tried by far. Works well, has a strong hold if needed but if you use less it can have a little looser hold. Works best with damp hair though. Good medium hold pomade – good for everyday use in normal to fine hair. Washes out easily. I don’t find the ‘cola’ scent to obvious – more like a little vanilla that does not linger or conflict with other scents. Simply the BEST! Water based, so it'll get hard, Fix it right and leave it alone for the rest of the day! If you like to play with your hair during the day, constantly waving you fingers through your hair, then this is Not for you, you need a Waxy one, like the Pink or Green on from this brand. Water based Pomade gets hard like Gel, but it does a 500% better job than Gel, no Gel competes with any Water based Pomade. Water based Pomade also rinses or washes out completely very easy. Waxy pomade comes out using excessive Conditioner, put it on without water and let sit a minute. I've tried many brands and others are good also, but this brand is better than any other I tried. So for Waxy Greasy: Pink (Heavy) and Green (Medium), For Water based: Blue (Heavy) and Red (Medium) This Red one Holds my hair Great, I can style it however I want and is my Favorite one at the moment. I'm so pleasantly surprised by this paste! I've been using Paul Mitchell's Wax Works for many years but Ulta was out so I opted to try something new. I've tried many styling products over the years and it's hard to find a texture product that doesn't weigh down my fine hair or leave me with a sticky product feel in my hair. This paste hold my style all day, better than anything I've used. I wore a beanie outside in the cold and when I removed the hat, my hair popped right back up! The best part is that I have this great hold in my pixie cut yet it doesn't even look like anything is in my hair at all. It looks and feels like my hair has natural texture and volume!! Another great product from sunbum. This stuff smells lovely ( like summer to me) and is great for taming fly away hairs. I have a friend who works at a beauty supply store over and she saw I had this she said they fly off the shelves at her store. I have thick shorter asian hair. I've tried the expensive brands, the cheap brands, and everything in between. Sun bum checks all the boxes. It smells great, holds well, and is priced right. There is no other product out there that can claim they do all 3. I am very conscious about not putting weird chemicals in my hair or using products that harm our environment. When I got this leather repair product I thought wow this is really small. I LOVE THIS! I have a brown leather sectional. I have an indoor cat. He doesn’t scratch on the couch but when he jumps on the furniture his back claws dig in so he doesn’t slip and makes long scratches. I have tried many other products, without success. I put this on the scratches and watched them disappear. It looks like I have a brand new sectional again. I took it over to my sisters and fixed my brother in law’s favorite chair where it had worn. I bought this when it was on sale with the other Sexy products for Black Friday. It was a great price and I thought it might be a good, cheaper, alternative to the Living Proof texturing cream I had been using and ran out of. I couldn't be more wrong. As soon as I opened it and went to scoop some out to use, I was surprised at how HARD it was. I wasn't sure how I was supposed to put this in my hair. The Living Proof one I used was a nice creamy consistency that disappeared when I rubbed it between my hands into a clear product. I tried to rub this between my hands and it was SOOOO sticky. In fact I had to wash my hands not once but TWICE to get the stickiness off of my hands. I was scared to even put this in my hair. I couldn't imagine what a disaster this sticky mess would have been. Maybe this product just wasn't for me or my needs. I was looking for something to give some "grip" to my super fine, super limp shoulder length hair so it would hold a curl better. My hair tends to get very soft and silky and a curling iron will slide right out of it if it has no product in it. The Living Proof worked well for this as it was smooth and creamy and not sticky to the touch, yet gave some grit and grip to the hair so it held a style. When this product hit the market several years ago, it was one of the best products available. it did not weigh down the hair and literally have the shaping and tousled separation with a very apt product title "Frenzy". They changed the formula and it became more 'wet and waxy' and even though you can achieve the look when freshly applied, it then weighs your hair down and goes limp. I have fine hair and don't like using several products in my hair which make the hair look dull (which is an unfortunate result of these products). I still use it though, have hoping the original formulation comes back, (they have changed packaging a few times), but also it's as good as any other product in the market (and I've tried several). My boyfriend is constantly using gel, styling pomade or wax for his hair and he was so excited to get the chance to try this out! From his initial reaction, he was happy with the consistency of the wax, as it was malleable and easily able to warm up with his fingers. Once in their hair, he was able to style it to his liking, and found that it kept his hair shape/style as he wanted. He did mention that after a while, he would feel the hold dropping and getting loose, but he would just apply some more. He loves all of the scents that AXE makes, so this was a definite plus! This is one of the best hair products I’ve bought. And I can confidently say that this is the best hair product you can find for the price. You only need to use a tiny amount, and it keeps its shape throughout the day. After running it through my hair with my fingers just a couple times, it looks exactly how I want it to. I've used the old and the new version of this product and both are exceptional, and I have yet to find another product that comes close to Garnier's Putty that holds your hair all day while looking natural. I've been using the Surfer Hair product for years and love it. I've tried other products but keep coming back to this. Unlike other hair products, this doesn't leave your hair greasy. I have been using the old Surfer Hair putty (strong hold 6) for 10 plus years. I lucked out, it being one of the first products I tried when I chopped my hair off. Over the years I have tried other products and NOTHING compares, even within Garnier Fructis' line. When GF switched up the formula, getting rid of the amazing scent, I stuck with it, because it still was the only product that checked every box for a hair product in terms of function. I have a lot of hair, but it is very fine, so can get weighed down or greasy quickly. Surfer Hair putty (strong hold 6) gave my hair lift, durability, and great texture. It didn't create a gel like shell (as many gums and strong putties do) that if I touched it too much the shell would crack and my hair fall. It didn't give the false promise of hold like many putties (including GF's other weaker putties) do and just leave my hair limp and shiny early in the day. In fact, I found the longer the day went on, the more I played with it, the better it looked. That is feat of physics compared to other products. The old Surfer Hair putty (strong hold 6) was literally in a class of it's own. I could go more than one day (with the assistance of some dry shampoo) and have great hair, earning compliments. I've recommended it to every one of my friends, girls and guys, with short hair who as me for product and styling advice. And my hype never disappointed them. I've scoured amazon, ebay, everywhere. There is now a gap in the market. You put out this "new formula" by the same product name that doesn't do the same thing. It feels like you've given us 10 options for 2-3 hold putty products or try and push people to some gel/putty that is basically a wax only for real stiff mohawks or mid-90's twisted spikes – it's 2018. Since this appalling discontinuation and deceptive "rebranding" a new product with an old trusted name, I've been asking anyone with hair I like what they use. I've even taken it to my (fancy) barber to show him what I'm looking for in a product, because just by verbal explanation alone he kept showing me other products that didn't live up. He's yet to find me something even close, from recommendation on the overprice barber shelf to something I could pick up at a target. I've tried a number of American Crew products and this one just doesn't work for me. It has less hold than the pomade, in my opinion, and leaves my hair looking greasy to the point that it looks like I've worked out and didn't shower afterwards. Using the pomade: The product is good at taming flyaways for a slicked-back hairstyle, without the crusty feel. It does initially leave a slightly greasy appearance to your hair but that seems to go away as the product sets in. I advise melting it a bit on the back of your hand first as the pomade is quite firm. Also, don’t be put off by the colour as it brushes in clear. Pomade scent: Not a bad scent in my opinion, however I think it is far too strong. When I buy a pomade it is to style my hair with, not to add a smell to my hair. I don’t want to smell it over my shampoo and conditioner, and I certainly don’t want to smell it over my perfume as I can with this. Due to the fragrance I won’t be buying this again and I probably won’t even finish the pot I purchased. In summary, if you don’t mind the scent and strength of it than this will be a good product for you.Treenie

Now that I have a short lob, all I use is a thickening spray and styling creme (with heat protectant) when my hair is wet and then I use a very small amount of this pomade after I curl my hair. This pomade gives me that piecey look for an effortlessly undone look. After my hair is dry it takes 5 min to curl and run this into my hair and I’m ready to go. I don’t even need a texturizing spray or hair spray when I use this pomade. I rub a small amount in between my fingers before rubbing it onto my ends or other areas where I want texture, hold, and a piecey look. I tried salt sprays, texturizing sprays, and many other products before finally landing on this stuff and it makes my mornings so much easier. I find the fragrance to be pretty strong (more so than I would prefer), so if you use other products that also have fragrance, then you’ll have some competition on your hands.ByeByeBirdie1

This is my first foray into pomades, and I was braced for something between a hair oil and the crunchy gels of the 80s. I was pleasantly surprised to find Cremo delivered something far better. This pomade is a solid hold, especially when worked through do hair, and it holds for 24 hours, if not longer. I've been able to mist water on my hair and comb it back into place after sleeping for a second day's hold. It doesn't have a strong smell, which is great — nothing to compete with my aftershave and cologne. I have 3a/b curly hair, ringlets with big volume and I thought I'd never be able to wear my hair straight without using a straightener religiously. And with this product alone, I can wear my hair slicked back and mostly straight in a Peaky Blinders cut. That's the kind of hold Cremo delivers, and I'm a convert for life. I recently received this Cremo Thickening Styling Paste #freeproduct from #trywithtopbox to try in exchange for an honest review. This is the first time my fiancé is trying a styling paste, he usually uses hair glue for his hair. He found that the product was easy to use and work into his hair. The texture of the paste is really soft and not at all sticky or tacky. It however does not have as much hold as his usual hair glue. He actually has pretty thick hair to begin with so he couldn't tell if there was a thickening effect. However, he said he really loved the scent of product. Most hair styling products he has tried usually smells waxy or has a overwhelming perfumy scent. This one smells like an old fashioned barber shop. He also liked the consistency of the product so he is looking forward to trying another product within the line but with a stronger hold.Icbeautybliss

This matte wax styles my hair for the majority if the day. I have straight black hair and thick hair, and this product does start to come off near the end of the day. My hair does not feel sticky at the end and it also smells good. I do wish there was a stronger hold, but that isnt the products fault.richard.d

I was looking for a replacement since my hair salon was out of my usual matte pomade. After buying 3 different ones, I was surprised by this one. It was fairly cheap so I didnt think it would be that great. I wear my hair in a faux hawk so I need precise styling. This worked its magic! It actually holds so well I dont even need to top it off with hairspray. Also lasts awhile, I went 2 days without a wash and it was still holding yet movable if I wanted to style different. To me out of a lot of other products this has zero smell. Most products are aimed for men and have that manly scent but I found this one to be mild. There is almost zero shine as well. I have used this product for years. However, this particular pot has a different consistency from previous ones I've purchased. Not as creamy, so not as easy to rub between your fingers, and apply to hair. I am a little disappointed, as not a cheap product. It is usually good value for money, as only need a small amount. I have purchased Reformer from legit retailers in the past and has been one of the only products that keeps my hair styled all day long. This product appears to be a cheap knockoff that does not hold you hair for more than 20 minutes. It also smells bad and leaves an oily feel after. I wanted a hair product to use as a final stage after using a pre-styler and blow-dryer once I get out of the shower. I tried many and often faced the same issue, I get my hair just the way I like it with plenty of volume and then whatever product I use would usually lessen that fullness. This truly is AMAZING! After my stylist told me about this product, and after reading many amazing reviews about it, I decided to try it out. And WOW, this product delivers! I tried bedhead matte separation wax, the Salon Guy Clutch XL, Baxter clay pomade, hanz de fuko sponge wax, hanz de fuko claymation, hanz de fuko quick sand, Mr pompadour paste, Blumaan, Kevin murphy rough rider, mitch reformer & mitch matterial (which I think are both really great pre-stylers). My very favorite so far was the Kevin Murphy Night Rider. It's a fantastic paste, matte finish, phenomenal hold. BUT you have to be careful not to apply too much because it can become a bit heavy and shiny the next morning. Now this stuff, the moroccanoil texture clay is on another level. It gives a ton of volume, a ton of texture, a totally matte finish, like, you can't even see you even have anything in your hair. It gives this tiny "grit" to your hair, a bit of a lived in look, and the hold is amazing! It holds super well, and yet, it feels like there is nothing in your hair. It also thickens your hair.. So if you have medium – fine hair like me, you'll look as if you had twice the amount of hair on your head! LOL It's a clay, and yet, it's easy to scoop out, and it breaks down in a very nice, creamy way, making it very easy to spread through your hands and apply to your hair. Some clays and waxes are difficult to apply to dry hair because they tend to pull the hair as you do.. This here, thanks to its creamy feel once warmed up, goes into the hair like butter! You'll feel a bit of a gritty feel as you apply.. But that's the effect this clay gives, that second day lived in look, but yet very natural. The Hold is truly amazing in it! Because it's light, and perfect for fine hair as it swells the hair, you can layer this product for more hold. Start with a little amount, and add a little more if needed. It's super versatile.. You can get a soft hold and nice texture, with just a tiny amount, all the way to a lived in, messy, texturized look, with a super strong hold, depending on how much you use. This does the same thing as their texturizing spray, but, with a strong hold! The smell is a unique, very clean and fresh smell. It's not overpowering, it's very light, and smells really nice! I don't even need to use texturizing powder anymore, this does everything LOL You can also use a little bit as a pre-styler, for great volume and body. And because it has argan oil, it also acts as a heat protectant.. Honestly, it's truly an amazing product.. I'm glad I decided to try it out.. Doesn't matter your hair type, length, this will give you that awesome, next day, texturized, lived in look, with a great hold. I strongly suggest you to try it out.. Let's start by saying that I've tried lots of putties, clays, gels, and sprays on my hair. My hair can be heavy in one area and thin in others so it will be difficult to manage at every chance it gets. However, this Clay is where it's at I'm telling you. This stuff I will put a little tiny bit in my hane maybe a dime's worth no more than a nickel, because now than a nickel would be overkill. And it just seems to work like magic. This is my hair savior! It smells great. It even makes me look great! It's an awesome product. I recommend it to anyone who has hair, guy or girl. It's a little on the higher end side of the price but it's so worth it, that I promise you will not even think about what you paid for it. AMAZING HAIR GEL! It has amazing hold and smells delicious and a little goes a very very long way. Dries fast but you still have enough time to lay your hair in the position you want. However, i think if there was a big tub available to buy , that would be so so helpfulbenie.l

I have tried most hair products but this does do what it says its called miss selling you can not spike your hair with this item also it left my hair greasy. If your hair is flat all good otherwise if you want to style your hair how you want get gummy wax it will never let you downpart1958

I've been searching for years for a gel that keeps my middle aged head of hair looking full without that cheap shiny look. Hairspray just didn't have the holding power and would get sticky during the day no matter what premium brand I tried. My barber in Florida recommended this to me and I'm hooked for life. I sure hope they never stop making this. Remember only one thing… use sparingly a little goes a long way.SteveB

I have purchased this for years for my boyfriend because he loves using this on his hair. However over the last 6 months or so, the packaging went from the 4.4 oz to the tiny 2.5 oz but the price stayed the same! I ordered some during the buy 2 get one free sale without realizing the smaller size was all that was offered. He was really surprised when it arrived and was the tiny jars! We returned all 3 to the local store. FYI: other online sites and even local retailers are still selling the 4.4 oz for a lower price (some sites are even 1/2 of this price). Won't be buying this from Ulta again since you're paying the same price for less product!Kimmyh24

When I opened the lid the protective insert in the opening was smashed into the product. Had to dig it out , and product was all over. Packaging was a mess.LINDA

The best gel I have ever used. It holds you hair IN PLACE, somewhat crunchy if you like that (I do). I have short hair and spike it a bit, this would not be good for long hair. Walmart offers the best deal on this by far.Jackie

I've been looking for an alternate product to use for a combover whenever my hair gets too long for a faux-hawk and I'm lazy to get a haircut right away to maintain it. So far, I've been using the product for a week and I'm impressed on how soft my hair feels after using this product and even more impressed with the smell of the product. IMO the Moroccan paste smells a lot better than the beeswax which says a lot since the beeswax already has a very pleasant smell. As the product states, it does leaves a good amount of texture to your hair which compliments my hair whenever I do a combover and only has medium hold in comparison to the beeswax. However, I feel I do not need a lot of product for my desired hairstyle and hold plus the product easily washes off when you take a shower. That said, when my hair is shorter I do prefer using the beeswax as it has a stronger hold throughout the day. Overall, I would highly recommend at least trying this product as it is pretty versatile for medium length hair.J.C

This product came highly recommended, and I was really looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately, the reality has proved to be somewhat disappointing. I have very fine hair that tends to look limp and frizzy without styling products, so I tend to use medium to high hold products that still allow me to play around and adjust throughout the day. My hair is also black, so I naturally gravitate towards matte finish products, as anything else just looks oily. What I found with the Sculpting Clay is that it does not provide enough hold for me to achieve the style I want, does not provide the lift I want for achieving volume, and despite being a clay, it looks and feels greasy in my hair, probably due to the addition of the bees wax. For the price I paid for this product, there are several other (and in my mind, better) products out there that work much better, and at the same or similar price points. Hanz de Fuko Claymation and Redken Rough Paste come to mind, with both products able to deliver better hold, better volume, the ability to rework your style, and a more matte finish. Sorry, Mr. Pomp, but this is a total miss for me. Upside: It smells nice?Joel H.

I purchased the sculpting clay from the Mister Pompadour website and I am in love. My hair is very fine and with other brand name products, it typically just falls within an hour or so of being fixed. This product is light weight, and has a matte finish to it so it doesn’t leave my hair looking oily. I also purchased the texture powder with the sculpting clay and I highly recommend getting both. The combination of products gave me the look of fuller, thicker hair and better control throughout the day. It is without a doubt the best hair product that I’ve found! Definitely worth it and the price point is so good for the quality of the product. It’s a win win!!Lane N.
