When I purchased the Netgear Nighthawk cable modem router, it was to replace the one that we had previously. The old one had stopped working and my teenage children were very close to death themselves. That is, according to my son who said that he was "gonna die" without "the net." I don't have a medical degree, but I was able to purchase and hookup the device fairly quickly and easily. After following the steps in the included installation guide we had internet service floor to ceiling and beyond again. Thanks to the Netgear Nighthawk my son did not implode, explode, or show any signs of promised death. Instead as soon as he witnessed the living room devices connecting to the web again, he leapt from the couch and bounded upstairs with a "thanks dad". No, I thought, thank you Netgear. I rather like my children and am very grateful that they did not pass away during this emergency. The Netgear Nighthawk app could not connect to it for trouble shooting. Tried following directions, which pushed heavily to call for tech support. After 25 mins of getting information, hold and transfers I finally got to a tech. And now it required a $50 three month tech contract to trouble shoot. “Connect without Internet” After trying repeatedly trying to get thru the admin setup screen I went back to my Wi-Fi log in page and selected “connect without internet” and all the problems were solved. The $50 tech call was no use at all, even after paying for it. Told her I was using an iPad. She kept telling me to go to a command prompt and type “configip”. Could not understand iOS and macOS were not windows machines running DOS. When yours breaks, and it will, remember to “connect without internet” or they will get you for $50. If they would simply print it and place on the side of the modem or in the directions one of the 15 places they printed to call the support number I would replace it with another one when needed. Zero stars. Do not buy. Made the mistake of thinking it might be better to get a cable modem and router in one, especially made the mistake of getting this Netgear C6250 pure garbage of a product. Wasted two hours of time, one hour with Xfinity tech support doing resets, then another hour with Netgear support with a tech support agent who had a noisy child and family in the background, finally for the agent to conclude after three reset attempts that this device is defective. Brand new out of a sealed box. Issue was a molasses slow download speed, this wasn’t an issue with the previous setup of a different (separate) modem and separate wifi router. Another issue was the 5Ghz SSID would not show despite checking broadcast settings being ON. Never touching a Netgear product again.Stag97

I set up my NETGEAR AC1600 Cable Modem Router to replace my Xfinity rental router. I am not a “TechGeek”, and it only required a single cable and power cord swap out. Then a simple call to my internet provider and I was back online. From there it was easy to get my WiFi Thermostat and WiFi sprinkler system connected. I would highly recommend the NETGEAR AC1600 Cable Modem Router without hesitation. The equipment is great, but the setup for this device was kind of a horror show. The biggest problem was that the app you need to set it up (and referenced in the included documents) isn't actually compatible (per my conversation with their tech support), and made the whole installation process more aggravating than necessary. Thankfully, this wasn't my first rodeo, so I got it set up and working and honestly I really love not having to use separate devices for both modem and router. Bought this to replace my 15yr old Motorola surfboard sb6141[still works] modem and an apple airport wireless base station. [very expensive and overpriced for what it does]. Since the last Motorola lasted, I stuck with them and I'm glad I did. This unit does the job of both modem and wireless routing in one unit so just power and cable connection. Less wiring is a plus. The old modem was 8 down. This one is 24 down. That equates to better bandwith/speed. I went from approx. 150Mbps to 433Mbps. I can tell the difference. Also the internal antenna's cover better than the expensive apple. I went from a weak signal to medium in the bedroom[farthest point] and medium to strong everywhere else. I was thinking about upgrading my comcast/xfinity speed but now it's not necessary. Easy to set up. For those having trouble, you can tweak your settings and tuning from the included configuration manager for even more speed and better coverage if there is a lot of congestion in your area. The internal power boost insures it goes the legal limit if need be automatically.Chuck

I used this to replace a similar Motorola modem/router combo that was about 8 years old. My download speeds went up 4 to 8 times what I had previously via Ookla Speedtest (now ranges from 150-350 Mbps). Upload speed stayed the same or maybe increased 1 Mbps (average 10-11 Mbps now). It was very easy to set up and thankfully it had a few less digits on the passcode, but still enough to be secure. FYI – I use Comcast (Xfinity) service.TedT

My previous modem, an MG7315, which was only 4 years old would drop the internet connection several times a day, sometimes several times within a 2 hour zoom session. The dropped connection would last about 4 minutes until it reacquired it. It was doing this for a year. I blamed Comcast, and had called Comcast a couple time in the last 2 years. Anyways, I took the chance to buy another modem/router and took a chance on buying another Motorola product, and I bought this MG7700. I've only had it for 5 days, but not a single drop thus far. And my Netflix on my TV via WiFi hasn't got behind in its streaming which it occasionally did. (the TV WiFi connection didn't have as severe a problem as my hard-wired computer. Not sure why.) I always wanted to own my own router instead of rent one from the cable/internet company. This was my first choice and experience in doing so. I would highly recommend it. I have multiple devices, both hardwired and wireless, connected to the router at once; it has never failed. I been using it for about 2 years now and I have never even had to reboot it for any issues. I cannot recommend this router enough. HOWEVER, I would check that the router is compatible with the internet service provider you are using, there should be information out there that confirms which models are compatible. But if this router is compatible, it does a great job.Blueboots

Replaced an older Motorola with this one. The AC1900 is significantly faster and stronger within my home. The older modem was still working 100% but a "glitch" in my network provider's wiring made it appear to be failed. I decided to keep this newer one because of the more robust WIFI. We've only had this modem/router for a little over a year and it is already going out. With how much we paid for this thing, I would have thought it would last longer than 15 months. I bought a modem in 2008 that lasted 9 years. My last one lasted 3 years. This one only lasted 15 months. Are they making them less and less reliable over the years? My father moved into town from the country. He needed some internet so he could stream some movie apps and Facebook. Signed him up to xfinity on the lowest package they had which was around 200 mbs. They wanted to charge around $14 dollars a month to rent their modem/router. So found this unit (netgear ac 1200) for around $50. It wasn’t that difficult to get set up with xfinity. You will use netgears nighthawk app and xfinity app to set it up. It took about 20 to 30mins to get it running. Only had it for about a week but everything is connecting fine and it handles at least 6 devices wirelessly without a problem. I believe it’s rated for 15 or 20 devices but we haven’t got that many on it at once. If it last for at least 4 months it will have paid for itself versus renting from the cable company. If it last a year I would probably give it five stars. If you are a gamer and game wirelessly you may want to look into a higher end model, maybe one that supports WiFi 6. This model is WiFi 5. I spent hours looking for a modem/router combination that would cover the square footage of my new apartment, be Xfinity compatible, and feature rich. The choices weren't great and I normally just rent the modem but I needed to terminate service and start over recently so I decided to stop paying $14 month renting. This modem/router has a small footprint but should run up to 20 devices. Save yourself some grief and follow the NetGear activation instructions rather than reaching out to the ISP. My installation failed at first because I wasn't registered with NetGear even though everything looked good on Xfinity's side. So far things are working well. I have all my devices including WFH working without hard-wiring with an Ethernet cable. In the past, everything I purchased from NetGear was an expensive disappointment. I got this modem/router for the apartment I’m currently living at. The apartment is just about 1000 sq. ft and is 2 stories. Between my roommates and myself, there are up to 10 devices in use at any given time. We have not had any issues whatsoever with having a strong internet connection anywhere in the apartment even though the router is located in a corner of the building. It was incredibly simple to set up using the nighthawk app. I highly recommend this modem/router for anyone living in a smaller house or apartment who wants to feel confident about their ability to stay connected.Keiran M

Recently purchased this as an open box unit and so far seems to be working fine. We had a very similar modem / router that must have been its predecessor with one in between and the one that was similar to this worked excellent until we knocked it over and it smashed and it didn't work anymore. So hopefully this one will not have that happen. Netgear makes really good routers and the one that we had in between was given to us and it was actually a more expensive model with the two antennas and cable company was doing an upgrade in the area and as far as we are concerned, they fried it. Could never get it to reboot after they did whatever they did. I prefer to own my own equipment than to give them money to rent it each month and on a modem like this, wherever you buy it, it would be yours and once you pay for it there's no monthly gateway charges.JRB Tennessee

First, let me say this Netgear router/modem combo is by far the best product I’ve ever used for internet service! The set up with Comcast was extremely easy and the download speeds were super fast! Working from home due to the pandemic, this was just what I needed. I bought my first unit in Sept 2019. It worked as advertised. I had multiple devices connected to it and I still had smoking internet speeds! Fast forward to May of 2020. After owning it for about 8 months, it started dropping the internet connection and I was constantly having to shut down my computers or devices and reboot my router. Then at one point it just shut down and wouldn’t turn on. I contacted Netgear and after some trouble shooting, they determined it was toast. To their credit, they sent a replacement unit out at no charge. Way to go Netgear Customer Service (NCS)! Fast forward to the middle of June 2021. As explained earlier, I work from home. I started to notice that the internet connection would drop and then reconnect multiple times during my work day. I was getting spotty connection on my other devices from time to time as well. Not to mention download speeds were so slow! Yesterday I was in the middle of a work presentation (using Microsoft Teams) when my internet connection completely failed! With no warning my connection went belly up and I was done for the day! Not good! I contacted NCS, and found my router was just outside the 1 year warranty period. So, after agreeing to add an extended warranty purchase to my router (for a good chunk of $$$) I was transferred to their gear head tech support branch. After 2 hrs and 40 minutes, the tech said my router was fried! For those considering buying this device, the shock of cold water for a review like this kinda disappointing. You should not that most reviews are by people who’ve only owned it for a few months. Still in the honeymoon phase. I read a similar review to mine and saw that while 43 people thought it was helpful, 64 did not. That review didn’t trash Netgear and neither does mine. Bottom line – This Netgear router/modem combo is BY FAR the best device I have ever hooked up to my Comcast service and got blazing fast speeds and it covered my whole (2500ft) house extremely well! This is a single router/modem combo unit with (4) external (illuminated) antennas that has been working OK and has enough range for all rooms in our 2500 SF house. Before buying this, we most recently had a new NetGear AC-1900 (C7000v2) Router w/ Modem that worked great for a while with an AC-1900 range extender, though that setup only lasted a few months until the Router/Modem could no longer recognize and connect wirelessly to the extender. The ISP tech could not make it work again, so we decided on this single unit, which DOES provide enough signal for the whole house (though not quite as strong in most distant rooms as the former with range extender). The 4 external antennas allow this unit to throw more signal than our old router/modem unit, and our kids say their Wi-Fi signal works well for mid-level gaming and school. My own Ethernet connection to this machine tests (on average) at around 450 Mbps download and 38 Mbps upload speeds with our mid-range ISP service plan. In my personal opinion, NetGear does not always have great setup instructions. Our ISP tech set this one up for us, and he said this one was easy but did also mention the "tribal knowledge" that is often required for setting up NetGear equipment. (Hey NetGear – did you hear that ? Well-worded instructions with complete illustrations ARE meaningful !!) Parting advice – the Geek Squad protection I bought was worth it when I returned the previous equipment. I have the same protection on this one.UncleFerd

I consider myself tech savvy, and have configured many Cable Modems and WiFi Gateways. However, the C7800 has been a major problem for me. The performance of the management interface 192.168.0.1 is a huge disappointment. Maybe I just got a bad C7800. I did a system reset and was able to set up the SSIDs and passphrases. Then a day later when I logged into the interface it was very very slow, and often did not even return the sub-menus. It never did produce the device list, and consequently I was not able to assign any IP addresses to MAC addresses. Also, about half of my Smart Devices were not able to attach to the network even though I used the same SSID and the same passphrase as my previous WiFi gateway. I'm very disappointed. If customer support can resolve my issue, I will be happen to amend this review. But at the moment, I am very disappointed and cannot recommend the C7800.cicook

I just received my Motorola 8702 Cable Modem/Router a few days ago and have been putting it through its paces. Inside the box along with the cable modem/router is a power cable, ethernet cord, and couple pages of user documentation. First I must say, it's been a while since I've used any Motorola equipment and so far, I'm thoroughly impressed with the quality of this cable modem. It's much taller than my current cable modem (which I just recently purchased), however, it has a nice sleekness to it and amazing build quality. On the back you will find a USB port, WPS and WLAN buttons (along with a RESET pinhole button), 4 LAN Ethernet ports, COAX connecting point, ON/OFF button, and the power adapter port. On the front panel is where you will find the status LEDs that will let you know what's currently going on with the cable modem/router. Now connecting the cable modem/router is fairly simple especially if you've done this before. However, I must note that if you are replacing equipment that you may be renting from your ISP or any other cable modem for that matter you must inform your ISP of the MAC address of the cable modem which can be located on the bottom of the device. Several ISPs (like mine Xfinity), allow the customer to update their hardware online either through their websites or apps. Xfinity allows me to update changes through my Xfinity app, which makes it a lot easier than having to sit and wait on hold forever. After connecting, everything to the back of the modem I downloaded the Minim app from the App Store (or Google Play Store if you have Android) and followed the prompts to finish setting up my device. Once the setup process was complete, I started testing out the speed by visiting a few websites on my desktop in the living room and almost immediately noticed a significant boost in the loading of different sites. To test the Wi-Fi, I went to the upstairs bedrooms of our condo and tested the connection where we had trouble getting little to no signals before. The signal was strong in both bedrooms upstairs and well as the basement. Signal used to fade slightly near the garage door headed outside but it has gotten much much better with this cable modem/router combo.Mistabritt

I’m usually hesitant with Router/Modem combinations as from my previous testing they haven’t worked too well (mainly wireless stability and range) and I usually run into issues when trying to pair it with another router to get better speeds, range, and/or gaming benefits (duma OS). Thankfully, it appears they had this in mind as there is a button on the back of the device that allows you to turn on/off wireless. You can tell if the wireless is ON by seeing the wireless buttons light up on the front (two total, one for the 2.4 GHz band, and one for the 5 GHz band) or OFF when well off. Which allowed me to pair this very easily with my Gaming Router. Speaking of my gaming router, I did some testing to see how the AC3200 Wireless Router compared to my Netgear XR500 AC2600 Wireless Router. I was impressed that it had nearly the same distance as my other router, with very similar speeds, and very solid connections throughout my entire house even into the garage. The dedicated gaming router still won out (range, speed, and OS) but not by enough to justify the cost of buying it if you already had this. I had great ping times, download, and upload speeds. They were consistent across the board without any drops or difficulty connecting and I was getting the same speeds wired as wireless (360 down/30 up) when close by on the 5 GHz band with impressive speeds on the 2.4 GHz band as well. If I didn’t already own the other device there would be no reason to go shopping for another wireless router. So, they have eliminated nearly all my concerns with combinations this time around. The only lacking component was that the OS system isn’t as cool as Duma OS. But I was still able to do all my gaming needs such as port forwarding and triggering and other things without any issues. Plus having it setup in the same place is convenient. Especially when paired with Minim App instead of going through the online Web Browser. This modem supports multiple ISP Providers such as Xfinity, Cox, Spectrum, and Charter. My personal one is Cox and the setup was straightforward and easy. I disconnected my old box and then needed to activate this new box. Some users may already have this setup, so they can do it through their PC and Cox Account. Other uses like myself may need to call Cox directly to get it setup but either process is easy and doesn’t take a lot of time. After that you just need to go to the setup page to create your own wireless names and passwords. This guy comes with pretty much all the specs your average person would want/need and mostly comes with top of the line specs. I won’t bore you with the specifics, but some highlights are Docsis 3.1 (newest is 4.0), IEE 802.11 ac/n/g/b/a (currently up to date), MU-MIMO (current), Powerboosting/beamforming (current). It also is NOT Wifi 6 but that is okay as it would make this dramatically more expensive and most people wouldn’t need it. It comes with four Gigabit LAN ports. I like that these ports have lighting to know what is going on. If they are blinking they are transmitting data. If it is greenthen it is using 1,000 Mbps (AKA gigabit speeds) (dependent on device and what internet speeds you are paying for) and if it is amber it is supporting <100 Mbps. Some other aspects that I enjoyed is that the front of the device tells you all the information you need. Such as power on/off, dedicated download speed, dedicated upload speed, internet, LAN, 2.4 GHz wireless, 5 GHz wireless, WPS, and USB. If you are using high speeds it will change the lights from green to blue to ensure it is working correctly which is nice if something were to go wrong, you could troubleshoot a lot more easily. The only thing missing is the ability to turn off these lights which is feature on my Gaming Router that I like a lot since it is in the same room that I sleep. Instead I need to cover them. There is a lot of light bleed on the right side and the lights themselves are bright which can bother those who want a perfectly dark room. In general, I have nothing negative to say about this modem/router combination. You get great speeds, excellent reach, easy setup, strong connections, and you can customize a great number of things if you so wish. There are also a lot of hardware settings such as a dedicated power on/off for the entire unit, dedicated wireless on/off, and dedicated WPS. Which makes it an easy recommendation from me.SirGalahad

It appears robust and has been delivering consistent fast connectivity since setting it up. I only needed to call my internet provider (Xfinity) to provide my MAC ID; we were up and running in about 10 minutes. Supported wireless standards are IEEE 802.11ac, n, g, b and a. There are also four Gigabit LAN ports. Four internal dual-band antennas help deliver up to 1000 Mbps and 2167 Mbps with the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios respectively. MU-MIMO (Multiple-User Multiple Input Multiple Output) and the power boost wireless amplifiers ensure devices stay solidly connected in my nearly three level 1800 sq ft townhome. You may create up to four SSIDs ( two for each band). The device also provides a 3.0 USB port for network storage, if needed. Other features of the App include: • Information on device speed test and signal strength • New device addition notification • Capture of time spent by each device and content viewed with parental control feature • Data used by each device (and their signal strength) with corresponding timestamps • Ability to create profiles and group devices to these user profiles • Timeline of changes made to the device • Ability to manually categorize devices (i.e. tablet, cellphone, appliance etc.) when the App failed to automatically do it The ease of use cannot be overemphasized. If you are comfortable and require additional tweaks, you can always do so via the default sign on ID and password through the 192.168. 0.1 IP address. This would be required if for instance you needed to change the default wireless security encryption from WPA2-PSK (AES) to another. In my experience, I created the previous SSIDs and passwords. This had all my devices up and running in no time; it was that seamless and the Minim App couldn't have made it easier. If I could improve this device, I would include a second 5Ghz radio and make it WIFI 6 compliant. I am a converted believer and have nothing but praise for the Motorola MG8702 and the Minim App. The setup ease, solid hardware specs and user control delivered makes this a high recommendation in my books. Bought to upgrade from older modem and router. This combo unit was easy to setup, and activated quickly through Comcast app. Like that I will have one less thing on the desk with the combo modem/router, and when speed tested was getting speeds in the 240 mpbs on our 200mpbs plan, both with the directly connected PC, and the wifi connected laptop in the other room. Also getting over 200 mbps speeds from upstairs. Am glad I finally got around to upgrading.Lisa

Terrible modem do NOT BUY!!! It’s completely insecure and opens you up to hackers. Arris changed their policy and no longer allows user to change user login. So ever single modem arris in use is “admin” and all the urls are 192.168.0.1. If you have a background in IT like I do; this is terrifying. A hacker can hack your password in less than 60 seconds. It’s vital that both defaults setting “admin” and “password” are changed to keep your network secure. Only one change doesn’t cut it.JLH1980

I bought this after seeing that it cost $14/month to lease Xfinity's equipment for WiFi. I did a lot of research for compatible devices and landed on this once because the reviews were pretty standard when compared to options with higher price points. Xfinity sent self-install instructions and I struggled with them/the Arris instructions for 40 minutes and could not get it to work. Finally, I called Xfinity and they told me they needed to register my device before it would connect. Very frustrating because the instructions were unclear, and I was on hold for a while with customer service. After that initial hiccup, this seems to be working well and I have no complaints. It will pay for itself in less than a year instead of leasing Xfinity's equipment. My advice is just to call customer service straight away and save the frustration of trying to get this connected yourself.Sarah

The first one stopped working In two weeks. Returned to BB for a replacement. This one worked for 5 months, then it lost all settings and reverted back to factory defaults. The Netgear Nighthawk app could not connect to it for trouble shooting. Tried following directions, which pushed heavily to call for tech support. After 25 mins of getting information, hold and transfers I finally got to a tech. And now it required a $50 three month tech contract to trouble shoot. “Connect without Internet” After trying repeatedly trying to get thru the admin setup screen I went back to my Wi-Fi log in page and selected “connect without internet” and all the problems were solved. The $50 tech call was no use at all, even after paying for it. Told her I was using an iPad. She kept telling me to go to a command prompt and type “configip”. Could not understand iOS and macOS were not windows machines running DOS. When yours breaks, and it will, remember to “connect without internet” or they will get you for $50. If they would simply print it and place on the side of the modem or in the directions one of the 15 places they printed to call the support number I would replace it with another one when needed. I had only a few choices of a cable modem and router to use with comcast internet and voice. I chose the Nighthawk in spite of the high cost since it came highly rated. In the first few months it worked fine but then the wifi became quite slow causing a lot of buffering and an inability to use it in the bedrooms of our house. I called tech support paid more for their services since the 90 days had run out. They were thorough in their check, gave me some pointers we reset the device and it worked bettter. Now the wifi has dropped off again causing me to miss 2 zoom meetings. Our son is in college and this is complicating his days as well. So overall I am not pleased. I have checked with comcast during times of difficulty and they have not reported any disruption in service. I am within the 1 year warranty and would like to trade this device in for one that works.Richard

I went to Best Buy to get a Wi-Fi extender. The associate told me the real issue was my xfinity router/ modem made from recycled parts and the better solution would be to purchase one from Best Buy and avoid monthly rental fees and this would also resolve the dead spots as it was a better router/modem. Sadly this “pitch” turned out to be false and 2 different router/modems later and multiple phone calls to both netgear and xfinity as well as a visit from the xfinity technician, I learned that the Netgear router modem was in fact, incapable of providing the same Wi-Fi speeds as the xfinity model. The Netgear router/modem provided less than 1/2 the Wi-Fi speed as the xfinity router/modem……Either the Best Buy associate was ignorant of the product capabilities or he intentionally lied in order to upswell….either way, I will be avoiding both Best Buy and Netgear products unless and until I am reimbursed for all the wasted time and aggravation. If you really want to own and want high speed this is not the way to go……I got over 600 with xfinity gateway and was only in the 200’s with Netgear’s…..not a contest……DupedInIllinois

The Netgear AXE7800 (RAXE300) Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router is a very solid router, but it should be given its price point. While not the most expensive home router you can buy, it's certainly nearing the upper tier when it comes to suggested retail price. Whether the RAXE300 is worth it or not is very dependent on who is purchasing it. It offers some nice features, and performance is very good — even excellent at times, particularly over its 5 Ghz frequency though it fell short of what was advertised. Netgear states up to 7.8 Gbps data transfer rates, but in reality, it measured around 700 Mbps over Wi-Fi between the connected devices. That's actually common, as manufacturers list the theoretical maximum speeds. You will always get lower speeds in real-life conditions. The other important point is that your subscription level with your Internet Service Provider and the quality of the connection is the most significant factor for any online activity. If your Internet connections is rated at 20 Mbps, then that is the maximum throughput any device connected to your router will achieve when accessing resources over the Internet. It doesn't matter how "fast" your router is, you're limited by the amount of data your Internet connection provides when doing anything online. W-Fi coverage was excellent. I did not experience any dead spots over the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz channels. The RAXE300 also supports a 6 Ghz frequency, which is much more finicky regarding distance and line of sight, however I did not have any devices that supported that frequency for testing. Wi-Fi printers, doorbell and IP cameras, as well as smart devices like thermostats, light bulbs, alarms, smartphones and tablets all worked flawlessly. You can use the router’s USB port to host a storage device. In this case, there are different ways to share the storage across the local network or the Internet. You also have to option to turn the router into a DLNA Media Server. Setting it all up did not go smoothly. Following the setup guide, I downloaded the Nighthawk app to my smartphone, then scanned the tag on the router. The app stated the router was not supported. Huh? Being a network engineer, I was able to work around that, but for those whose expertise does not include networks, it might have been a bit more intimidating. I also don’t like that this requires you to register an account with Netgear, requiring information that may raise privacy concerns. Other disappointments were a lack of quality of service (QoS) controls in the app. I did find QoS in the web interface that can be enabled, however once enabled, it appears to work based on a pre-configured database. There’s no way to know what it does or how well it does it. There appears to be very limited parental controls. Netgear offers a paid subscription for premium parental controls, as well as a 30-day trial of Netgear Armor subscription for security. There’s apparently no built-in online protection. Netgear has apparently removed remote management capability in this version of the software. For the past few years, it seems Netgear has been removing features from the web interface and have been pushing users towards the mobile app. Overall, the Netgear AXE7800 (RAXE300) Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router performed very well, but in an effort towards either ease of use or a more profitable subscription model, lacks management features more technical users are accustomed to. Excellent performance warrants a 5-star rating, but some minor annoyances and lack of control prevents from awarding it the highest overall rating. I also can’t figure out how to make it fly. The Netgear Nighthawk AXE7800 offers excellent performance in a WiFi 6 router. In a quick speed test shortly after setup, I was getting 338 Mbps to my iPhone over WiFi on a 400 x 20 cable connection. The router came securely packaged with a power supply and a flat CAT5e cable, as well as a quick start guide and a quick reference card to be kept near the router. Setup was quick. I plugged my wired devices into the 4 gigabit ethernet ports, and connected the cable modem to the gigabit WAN port, rebooted the cable modem, and once the modem's boot up was complete, I plugged in the router and had it up and running in just a few seconds. There is also a 2.5 Gbps WAN port if you're lucky enough to have faster than Gigabit speeds from your ISP. I then connected my iPhone to the router's default WiFi and used the Netgear Nighthawk App to customize my SSIDs and passwords and add guest access. This portion of the installation could have been a little smoother. Between main and guest WiFi networks, there are a total of SIX SSIDs. Each one required entering the custom SSID and password, and then waiting for a reboot. It would've been much, much faster if all six were entered on a single screen followed by a single reboot. That issue aside, installation wasn't difficult, just a bit more time consuming than it needed to be. I do like that the router defaults to separate SSIDs for each band, as this makes it easy to connect home automation devices to the 2.4 Ghz network, which most of them require. It's also nice to be able to choose the connection you need for a particular purpose or device since 2.4 Ghz offers longer range, but 5 & 6 Ghz bands offer much higher speeds. The AXE7800 offers extreme speed for those who need it, along with ease of installation, and a very good management app. This is a very nice, VERY fast router.NoNameNick

I am always on the hunt for a better router. I've had everything from standard routers of the past, to the latest mesh networks. I have a lot of devices connected to my router and need fast speeds to keep up with everything as well as good coverage. We have a smaller house at 1,400 sq. ft., and it is anything but an open floor plan. Each room is closed off to the next. You will need to download the Nighthawk app for setup and to use the features of the router. The app includes a device manager to see your full list of devices, speed test, parental controls, WiFi analytics (signal strength, speed tests for different rooms of your house, settings for each of the three bands, guest WiFi and a traffic meter). It also comes with a 30-day free trial of Armor Security, you can pay for the yearly subscription after the trial if you wish. At any given time we have around 30 devices connected to the network. (There are several more, but these are the ones that are always on and connected). The tri-band is extremely helpful. I can split the devices connected between the three bands based on my needs. For example, my phone stays on the 6GHz band, while my smart-home devices stay on the base band (2.4GHz). My old router was in the master bedroom and I had nodes in various places throughout the house/garage. It still didn't have the best coverage. With this router, I decided to move it to the center of the house in the living room. I put it in what should be a bad spot signal wise. I have it on the bottom shelf of our TV stand behind a door. With everything so close to it, and it being almost on the floor behind a door, I figured it might struggle to get a signal out, but it does great. I live on one acre and I have strong signal all over the property and my outdoor cameras have a full signal. I have my PS5 and my JBL Bar 9.1 soundbar wired to the router. I will say that this router is quite large (13.6" wide, 6.47" high and 8.16" deep) and will be harder to hide than most current routers. I don't mind the size as it is hidden away and fits in my TV stand. As far as some of the devices connected and where they are, I have three TVs connected (each with a FireStick), one TV is in the garage. Four smartphones, three smart watches, three Alexa Shows, many light bulbs, two outdoor cameras (one on the front porch and one outside the garage), two laptops, a doorbell and security system. I never have any lag while gaming and no buffering while streaming TV. This router is great if you have a larger space and many devices connected. The condition of this item was better than advertised. While not the most current technology, it is more than sufficient for my needs – 5 computers, 2 tablets and 1 smartphone and no more than 1 video stream at a time. This is a good value for the price that includes phone, internet and wi-fi. Now I can remove modem rent from my internet bill. Replacing the ISP's modem with this modem was straightforward and I didn't need to re-introduce my wireless computers to this new gateway. Even better.rmartine2

I bought this cable modem for my area's fastest internet provider and the technicians had nothing but good things to say about this particular model. They said it is capable of faster speeds than the other modems they use, faster speeds than the provider can produce, which tells me it will be the only modem I will need for quite some time. This model has the voice capability so you can use it for phone service as well. If you don't need it for phone service, there are cheaper versions of this modem that will serve you well. I wanted to buy a modem instead of rent it from the provider service because it will for itself within a year. I had this service before and even though you can have it replaced for free if you are renting it, I had the service for about 5 years and could have bought 5 modems if I bought them myself instead of renting so if you can fork out $200 or less it is worth it in the long run. Reception is great in the house and the modem is fast. It is Docsis 3, optimized for Xfinity service, and has been steady and fast.imabucfan

This is a good product. It performs as well as, and has almost all the functionality of the similar Xfinity modem. One thing that is different is that the 2 phone ports that it has, which the Xfinity modem also has, is that it is configured to have 2 different phone lines as opposed to having them be parallel ports, like the Xfinity model. I currently have the Nighthawk M5 5200. I read several reviews on the new M6 indicating a 20% speed increase over my M5. I ran multiple test using the same sim, testing the M5 and M6 in the same exact spot and used the same cell phone at the same distance from the Nighthawks on the 5ghz channels using wifi6. I ran 7 tests on each Nighthawk using my Ookla test app. I tossed the high and low test on each Nighthawk and averaged the middle 5 tests on each. The M5 and M6 were almost identical, both in the mid 500 mbps download speed. Only a 1% difference between the two averages with the M5 turning in the very very slightly better speed. The M5 and the M6 both provide excelent data speeds. If you have an M5 I would not recommend an 6M upgrade. If you dont have an M5, then I highly recomend the M6.Gator007

The Netgear M6 pro is the best hotspot I have ever used. I tried it on the AT&T network and got reliable 5G connection and very fast connections wherever I used it. We’ve tried other mesh systems in our house previously but still haven’t gotten the coverage we wanted across the board that we need for a household of gamers, streamers and bingers that will work with day to day working from home as well. After reading and researching I pulled the trigger on these. It’s been 2 weeks and we’ve had a double in our speeds to close to our Gigabit connection and uploads, no dropouts and full coverage from the garage to the upstairs front balcony. Whilst the system is a bit pricey, it’s been worth the upgrade and smashed all of our previous solutions short of a full hardline system. Was user friendly for setup with our existing router, just plug in the Ethernet cable to a free port, follow the step by step install on the phone app and your on your way. For reference, we have a 400 square meter lot that is two stories and seperate garage with a 2 bed apartment above. Purchased as a gift for my father, finally had a day off and added this modem to his Xfinity account. Everything worked fine including MOCA. Ten minutes later MOCA stopped working. Hours on the phone with Xfinity, they pull Arris on to the call for them to say yeah that feature doesn't work right so we disable it. Blatant bait and switch. Too late to return now I have to spend more to get a MOCA adapter to recreate the function built into this device that they switched off. I'd be less upset if it never worked but it was working great for the first 10 or so minutes to have it stop while streaming a movie. Not right.LWSIV

Basically, buying this modem allows your ISP to sell all your browsing activity to 3rd parties. Sure, this will allow you to return your rented modem to your ISP and save you money. HOWEVER, they lock your DNS settings. This means your IPS is the only one that can set this at the modem level. This allows them to collect all your online activity and sell it to third parties. You can still change these settings on each of your computers, phones, etc.. but seeing as I OWN this modem it's ridiculous I can't set my DNS settings on it and have all my connected devices set to auto. I wouldn't be surprised at all if xfinity/comcast payed arris to make this change to their modems. I don't mind my ISP seeing my browsing but them selling it is just not okay.marioio

2 years of use no issues i have xfinitys gigspeed plan and get 400-700mbs speed on wifi which is expected depending on what time of day network has congestion and signal interference with wireless but wired i get 1gbs sustained no issues. Modem is fairly future proof with gigspeed becoming the standard in 5 years getitng the jump ona gigspeed modem router combo is always a good idea youll save its cost 3x over in 5-6 years of use and its more than capable of lasting that long with the gig speed capability. Works better than your standard rental in singal strengh aswell i have no issues connecting to wifi in my backyard drive way side walk etc basicly my whole home and 90% of my yard are covered in wifi where as the rental sections of my home inside would have no singal like the basement or upstairs bathroom.tonyB

When I purchased the Netgear Nighthawk cable modem router, it was to replace the one that we had previously. The old one had stopped working and my teenage children were very close to death themselves. That is, according to my son who said that he was "gonna die" without "the net." I don't have a medical degree, but I was able to purchase and hookup the device fairly quickly and easily. After following the steps in the included installation guide we had internet service floor to ceiling and beyond again. Thanks to the Netgear Nighthawk my son did not implode, explode, or show any signs of promised death. Instead as soon as he witnessed the living room devices connecting to the web again, he leapt from the couch and bounded upstairs with a "thanks dad". No, I thought, thank you Netgear. I rather like my children and am very grateful that they did not pass away during this emergency.
