20 Best Modem Router For Home (Jan 2023 Update)

Bought this to replace my 15yr old Motorola surfboard sb6141[still works] modem and an apple airport wireless base station. [very expensive and overpriced for what it does]. Since the last Motorola lasted, I stuck with them and I'm glad I did. This unit does the job of both modem and wireless routing in one unit so just power and cable connection. Less wiring is a plus. The old modem was 8 down. This one is 24 down. That equates to better bandwith/speed. I went from approx. 150Mbps to 433Mbps. I can tell the difference. Also the internal antenna's cover better than the expensive apple. I went from a weak signal to medium in the bedroom[farthest point] and medium to strong everywhere else. I was thinking about upgrading my comcast/xfinity speed but now it's not necessary. Easy to set up. For those having trouble, you can tweak your settings and tuning from the included configuration manager for even more speed and better coverage if there is a lot of congestion in your area. The internal power boost insures it goes the legal limit if need be automatically.Chuck

I used this to replace a similar Motorola modem/router combo that was about 8 years old. My download speeds went up 4 to 8 times what I had previously via Ookla Speedtest (now ranges from 150-350 Mbps). Upload speed stayed the same or maybe increased 1 Mbps (average 10-11 Mbps now). It was very easy to set up and thankfully it had a few less digits on the passcode, but still enough to be secure. FYI – I use Comcast (Xfinity) service.TedT

My previous modem, an MG7315, which was only 4 years old would drop the internet connection several times a day, sometimes several times within a 2 hour zoom session. The dropped connection would last about 4 minutes until it reacquired it. It was doing this for a year. I blamed Comcast, and had called Comcast a couple time in the last 2 years. Anyways, I took the chance to buy another modem/router and took a chance on buying another Motorola product, and I bought this MG7700. I've only had it for 5 days, but not a single drop thus far. And my Netflix on my TV via WiFi hasn't got behind in its streaming which it occasionally did. (the TV WiFi connection didn't have as severe a problem as my hard-wired computer. Not sure why.) Anyways, I'm currently extremely happy, so far. But I will know more after my next several 2 hour Zoom session.g

When I purchased the Netgear Nighthawk cable modem router, it was to replace the one that we had previously. The old one had stopped working and my teenage children were very close to death themselves. That is, according to my son who said that he was "gonna die" without "the net." I don't have a medical degree, but I was able to purchase and hookup the device fairly quickly and easily. After following the steps in the included installation guide we had internet service floor to ceiling and beyond again. Thanks to the Netgear Nighthawk my son did not implode, explode, or show any signs of promised death. Instead as soon as he witnessed the living room devices connecting to the web again, he leapt from the couch and bounded upstairs with a "thanks dad". No, I thought, thank you Netgear. I rather like my children and am very grateful that they did not pass away during this emergency. I didn't expect that there was a lifesaving device in the box when I purchased the Nighthawk cable modem router, but evidently I received much more than I expected.Jamie

The first one stopped working In two weeks. Returned to BB for a replacement. This one worked for 5 months, then it lost all settings and reverted back to factory defaults. The Netgear Nighthawk app could not connect to it for trouble shooting. Tried following directions, which pushed heavily to call for tech support. After 25 mins of getting information, hold and transfers I finally got to a tech. And now it required a $50 three month tech contract to trouble shoot. “Connect without Internet” After trying repeatedly trying to get thru the admin setup screen I went back to my Wi-Fi log in page and selected “connect without internet” and all the problems were solved. The $50 tech call was no use at all, even after paying for it. Told her I was using an iPad. She kept telling me to go to a command prompt and type “configip”. Could not understand iOS and macOS were not windows machines running DOS. When yours breaks, and it will, remember to “connect without internet” or they will get you for $50. If they would simply print it and place on the side of the modem or in the directions one of the 15 places they printed to call the support number I would replace it with another one when needed. I always wanted to own my own router instead of rent one from the cable/internet company. This was my first choice and experience in doing so. I would highly recommend it. I have multiple devices, both hardwired and wireless, connected to the router at once; it has never failed. I been using it for about 2 years now and I have never even had to reboot it for any issues. I cannot recommend this router enough. HOWEVER, I would check that the router is compatible with the internet service provider you are using, there should be information out there that confirms which models are compatible. But if this router is compatible, it does a great job.Blueboots

Replaced an older Motorola with this one. The AC1900 is significantly faster and stronger within my home. The older modem was still working 100% but a "glitch" in my network provider's wiring made it appear to be failed. I decided to keep this newer one because of the more robust WIFI. We've only had this modem/router for a little over a year and it is already going out. With how much we paid for this thing, I would have thought it would last longer than 15 months. I bought a modem in 2008 that lasted 9 years. My last one lasted 3 years. This one only lasted 15 months. Are they making them less and less reliable over the years? I feel scammed by the companies who make these devices and cannot help but feel that planned obsolescence may be at play here.NRGV

I just received my Motorola 8702 Cable Modem/Router a few days ago and have been putting it through its paces. Inside the box along with the cable modem/router is a power cable, ethernet cord, and couple pages of user documentation. First I must say, it's been a while since I've used any Motorola equipment and so far, I'm thoroughly impressed with the quality of this cable modem. It's much taller than my current cable modem (which I just recently purchased), however, it has a nice sleekness to it and amazing build quality. On the back you will find a USB port, WPS and WLAN buttons (along with a RESET pinhole button), 4 LAN Ethernet ports, COAX connecting point, ON/OFF button, and the power adapter port. On the front panel is where you will find the status LEDs that will let you know what's currently going on with the cable modem/router. Now connecting the cable modem/router is fairly simple especially if you've done this before. However, I must note that if you are replacing equipment that you may be renting from your ISP or any other cable modem for that matter you must inform your ISP of the MAC address of the cable modem which can be located on the bottom of the device. Several ISPs (like mine Xfinity), allow the customer to update their hardware online either through their websites or apps. Xfinity allows me to update changes through my Xfinity app, which makes it a lot easier than having to sit and wait on hold forever. After connecting, everything to the back of the modem I downloaded the Minim app from the App Store (or Google Play Store if you have Android) and followed the prompts to finish setting up my device. Once the setup process was complete, I started testing out the speed by visiting a few websites on my desktop in the living room and almost immediately noticed a significant boost in the loading of different sites. To test the Wi-Fi, I went to the upstairs bedrooms of our condo and tested the connection where we had trouble getting little to no signals before. The signal was strong in both bedrooms upstairs and well as the basement. Signal used to fade slightly near the garage door headed outside but it has gotten much much better with this cable modem/router combo.Mistabritt

I’m usually hesitant with Router/Modem combinations as from my previous testing they haven’t worked too well (mainly wireless stability and range) and I usually run into issues when trying to pair it with another router to get better speeds, range, and/or gaming benefits (duma OS). Thankfully, it appears they had this in mind as there is a button on the back of the device that allows you to turn on/off wireless. You can tell if the wireless is ON by seeing the wireless buttons light up on the front (two total, one for the 2.4 GHz band, and one for the 5 GHz band) or OFF when well off. Which allowed me to pair this very easily with my Gaming Router. Speaking of my gaming router, I did some testing to see how the AC3200 Wireless Router compared to my Netgear XR500 AC2600 Wireless Router. I was impressed that it had nearly the same distance as my other router, with very similar speeds, and very solid connections throughout my entire house even into the garage. The dedicated gaming router still won out (range, speed, and OS) but not by enough to justify the cost of buying it if you already had this. I had great ping times, download, and upload speeds. They were consistent across the board without any drops or difficulty connecting and I was getting the same speeds wired as wireless (360 down/30 up) when close by on the 5 GHz band with impressive speeds on the 2.4 GHz band as well. If I didn’t already own the other device there would be no reason to go shopping for another wireless router. So, they have eliminated nearly all my concerns with combinations this time around. The only lacking component was that the OS system isn’t as cool as Duma OS. But I was still able to do all my gaming needs such as port forwarding and triggering and other things without any issues. Plus having it setup in the same place is convenient. Especially when paired with Minim App instead of going through the online Web Browser. This modem supports multiple ISP Providers such as Xfinity, Cox, Spectrum, and Charter. My personal one is Cox and the setup was straightforward and easy. I disconnected my old box and then needed to activate this new box. Some users may already have this setup, so they can do it through their PC and Cox Account. Other uses like myself may need to call Cox directly to get it setup but either process is easy and doesn’t take a lot of time. After that you just need to go to the setup page to create your own wireless names and passwords. This guy comes with pretty much all the specs your average person would want/need and mostly comes with top of the line specs. I won’t bore you with the specifics, but some highlights are Docsis 3.1 (newest is 4.0), IEE 802.11 ac/n/g/b/a (currently up to date), MU-MIMO (current), Powerboosting/beamforming (current). It also is NOT Wifi 6 but that is okay as it would make this dramatically more expensive and most people wouldn’t need it. It comes with four Gigabit LAN ports. I like that these ports have lighting to know what is going on. If they are blinking they are transmitting data. If it is greenthen it is using 1,000 Mbps (AKA gigabit speeds) (dependent on device and what internet speeds you are paying for) and if it is amber it is supporting <100 Mbps. Some other aspects that I enjoyed is that the front of the device tells you all the information you need. Such as power on/off, dedicated download speed, dedicated upload speed, internet, LAN, 2.4 GHz wireless, 5 GHz wireless, WPS, and USB. If you are using high speeds it will change the lights from green to blue to ensure it is working correctly which is nice if something were to go wrong, you could troubleshoot a lot more easily. The only thing missing is the ability to turn off these lights which is feature on my Gaming Router that I like a lot since it is in the same room that I sleep. Instead I need to cover them. There is a lot of light bleed on the right side and the lights themselves are bright which can bother those who want a perfectly dark room. In general, I have nothing negative to say about this modem/router combination. You get great speeds, excellent reach, easy setup, strong connections, and you can customize a great number of things if you so wish. There are also a lot of hardware settings such as a dedicated power on/off for the entire unit, dedicated wireless on/off, and dedicated WPS. Which makes it an easy recommendation from me.SirGalahad

It appears robust and has been delivering consistent fast connectivity since setting it up. I only needed to call my internet provider (Xfinity) to provide my MAC ID; we were up and running in about 10 minutes. Supported wireless standards are IEEE 802.11ac, n, g, b and a. There are also four Gigabit LAN ports. Four internal dual-band antennas help deliver up to 1000 Mbps and 2167 Mbps with the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios respectively. This is the best purchase ever. The default NBN modem/routers that come from your provider are very bad. But you can use them as modem only (as a bridge) and pait it with this fantastic and superfast Ax10 Wifi router. I have seen my speed go up spectacularly and the connections are way more stable! So far the router has been working flawlessly. Easy to setup. Had it up and running within 10mins. Has good wifi range. Covered my 3 bedroom house no problems at all. The one thing a hate is that it has to connect to a top level domain server every 30sec. Its to check to see it your internet is still up and running. A heat beat. The condition of this item was better than advertised. While not the most current technology, it is more than sufficient for my needs – 5 computers, 2 tablets and 1 smartphone and no more than 1 video stream at a time. This is a good value for the price that includes phone, internet and wi-fi. Now I can remove modem rent from my internet bill. Replacing the ISP's modem with this modem was straightforward and I didn't need to re-introduce my wireless computers to this new gateway. Even better.rmartine2

I bought this cable modem for my area's fastest internet provider and the technicians had nothing but good things to say about this particular model. They said it is capable of faster speeds than the other modems they use, faster speeds than the provider can produce, which tells me it will be the only modem I will need for quite some time. This model has the voice capability so you can use it for phone service as well. If you don't need it for phone service, there are cheaper versions of this modem that will serve you well. I wanted to buy a modem instead of rent it from the provider service because it will for itself within a year. I had this service before and even though you can have it replaced for free if you are renting it, I had the service for about 5 years and could have bought 5 modems if I bought them myself instead of renting so if you can fork out $200 or less it is worth it in the long run. Reception is great in the house and the modem is fast. It is Docsis 3, optimized for Xfinity service, and has been steady and fast.imabucfan

This is a good product. It performs as well as, and has almost all the functionality of the similar Xfinity modem. One thing that is different is that the 2 phone ports that it has, which the Xfinity modem also has, is that it is configured to have 2 different phone lines as opposed to having them be parallel ports, like the Xfinity model. Bought to upgrade from older modem and router. This combo unit was easy to setup, and activated quickly through Comcast app. Like that I will have one less thing on the desk with the combo modem/router, and when speed tested was getting speeds in the 240 mpbs on our 200mpbs plan, both with the directly connected PC, and the wifi connected laptop in the other room. Also getting over 200 mbps speeds from upstairs. Am glad I finally got around to upgrading.Lisa

Terrible modem do NOT BUY!!! It’s completely insecure and opens you up to hackers. Arris changed their policy and no longer allows user to change user login. So ever single modem arris in use is “admin” and all the urls are 192.168.0.1. If you have a background in IT like I do; this is terrifying. A hacker can hack your password in less than 60 seconds. It’s vital that both defaults setting “admin” and “password” are changed to keep your network secure. Only one change doesn’t cut it.JLH1980

I bought this after seeing that it cost $14/month to lease Xfinity's equipment for WiFi. I did a lot of research for compatible devices and landed on this once because the reviews were pretty standard when compared to options with higher price points. Xfinity sent self-install instructions and I struggled with them/the Arris instructions for 40 minutes and could not get it to work. Finally, I called Xfinity and they told me they needed to register my device before it would connect. Very frustrating because the instructions were unclear, and I was on hold for a while with customer service. After that initial hiccup, this seems to be working well and I have no complaints. It will pay for itself in less than a year instead of leasing Xfinity's equipment. My advice is just to call customer service straight away and save the frustration of trying to get this connected yourself.Sarah

This is the best mesh point system that I have bought. We have Xfinity internet and our router can’t give the whole house internet as we have a big house. This 3 google nest mesh point system delivers to the whole house without dead spots and switches out device’s to the closest point. I have used netgear and I would always be connected to whatever point connected to my phone when I would get home and it would stay connected to that point until I was out of range. With the Google mesh points, the router points know basically where your device is and switches automatically so you have the best internet connection with fast speeds and no interruptions. Where the netgear I had several problems with being connected and not having good speeds and or even having connection but no internet. I’m very impressed with Google and there technology on this product. Recently moved from a small one-bedroom apartment into a house, so the drop in WiFi signal from one end of the house to the other was surprising. Our internet speeds are 200 Mbps down/ 10 Mbps up and we receive that while in the room with the router. Moving to the other end of the home where we sleep and that signal would drop to around 30 mbps down and 8 Mbps up. After purchasing this kit, the router is still on one side of the home, we have one access point in the middle of the home in our library and another in the primary bedroom and we maintain the 200 Mbps down / 10 Mbps pretty much everywhere in and around the home. We're already a decently heavy Google household so the fact that the access points double as voice assistants is pretty handy as well. The largest con to the Nest Wifi router is the fact that it only has one ethernet port. This is fine, because an 8 port Gigabit Ethernet switch is like $25 at most. But I can see how people who aren't necessarily tech-savvy have no idea what a network switch even is. The other con is the lack of choosing what WiFi network to connect to (whether it be 5 Ghz or 2.4 GHz). For the most part, the automation works well, but there are a few times where my partners desktop will only connect to 2.4 Ghz and it leaves her with a slightly slower connection. Overall kinda minor, as it quickly adjusts, but still an inconvenience. With that being said, I still think this Mesh Router from Nest is the go-to option for those who are already a Google household. So far, the issues presented are minor at best, but I would highly recommend picking up a network switch with this router to ensure you have enough Ethernet ports available.Matt

We were looking to extend our gigabit wifi coverage and already owned the previous generation Google Wifi mesh extenders, so I figured upgrading to the Google Nest Wifi made sense as the old version had served us well. These newer ones perform as advertised: stronger coverage over a wider area thanks to the updated hardware in the current units! We upgraded to whole home security cameras, so I wanted to ensure we didn’t see any dropouts or higher battery drain due to poor wireless speed/strength, and so far I’m happy to report they are working out great. A big positive for me was the hardware microphone mute for these units. Honestly I would have preferred being able to buy these without the built-in microphone/voice assistance feature just out of privacy concerns, but being able to disable it manually on the hardware itself and see the LEDs on the bottom of the points change to Orange/Red to show the mic is disabled once you flip the switch is handy. The biggest negative I have for these was that the setup was not flawless, and even required me to reach out to support as it wasn’t anything that could be fixed through standard troubleshooting like power cycling or doing a factory reset and redoing the network setup from scratch. The other issue I had was trying to add my old google wifi units as access points since their documentation notes the old ones could still be used as long as you didn’t try to exceed their recommended “limit” of having no more than 5 access points connected to a single router. After factory resetting the older units and trying to add them to the mesh network, I noticed considerable issues with signal degradation as it seemed like it was actually introducing interference rather than boosting signal coverage in other areas of the house. The new Google Home app that lets you control/monitor your network is pretty good overall as well, aside from returning a lot of “Unnamed Device” names for the hardware found on our network – I don’t recall the old “Google Wifi” app having the same issue. Slight negatives aside, I am still quite pleased with the newer Google Nest Wifi mesh router and access points – the speeds are solid, they transmit fairly well throughout the walls and home in general, and aside from the initial setup hiccups, they’ve been performing flawlessly ever since. Overall, I’d highly recommend the Nest Mesh router/points system and since the rating system doesn’t allow it, I’d note that if possible I’d give this one 4.5 stars out of 5.Matt

I spent hours looking for a modem/router combination that would cover the square footage of my new apartment, be Xfinity compatible, and feature rich. The choices weren't great and I normally just rent the modem but I needed to terminate service and start over recently so I decided to stop paying $14 month renting. This modem/router has a small footprint but should run up to 20 devices. Save yourself some grief and follow the NetGear activation instructions rather than reaching out to the ISP. My installation failed at first because I wasn't registered with NetGear even though everything looked good on Xfinity's side. So far things are working well. I have all my devices including WFH working without hard-wiring with an Ethernet cable. In the past, everything I purchased from NetGear was an expensive disappointment. I got this modem/router for the apartment I’m currently living at. The apartment is just about 1000 sq. ft and is 2 stories. Between my roommates and myself, there are up to 10 devices in use at any given time. We have not had any issues whatsoever with having a strong internet connection anywhere in the apartment even though the router is located in a corner of the building. It was incredibly simple to set up using the nighthawk app. I highly recommend this modem/router for anyone living in a smaller house or apartment who wants to feel confident about their ability to stay connected.Keiran M

Recently purchased this as an open box unit and so far seems to be working fine. We had a very similar modem / router that must have been its predecessor with one in between and the one that was similar to this worked excellent until we knocked it over and it smashed and it didn't work anymore. So hopefully this one will not have that happen. Netgear makes really good routers and the one that we had in between was given to us and it was actually a more expensive model with the two antennas and cable company was doing an upgrade in the area and as far as we are concerned, they fried it. Could never get it to reboot after they did whatever they did. I prefer to own my own equipment than to give them money to rent it each month and on a modem like this, wherever you buy it, it would be yours and once you pay for it there's no monthly gateway charges.JRB Tennessee

I bought this as a replacement for my Telstra router and despite some initial hiccups I'm glad I did. Pros: * Speeds, WiFi 6 and WPA3 support are great. * Can actually change the DNS settings to whatever you like. * Has support for static routes and WPA2-Enterprise which is a nice bonus. * Has a decent advanced config page with a good amount of settings to mess around with * Has an app that lets you configure your network from your phone, however I haven't used it Cons: * Setup OOTB was a bit of a pain. It pays to read the manual even if you're technically inclined as the settings required for a HFC NBN connection are different than FTTN and FTTP. Namely I had to set the MAC address to "Clone current device address" for a connection to a cable modem (i.e HFC NBN) to work. I wish this was documented in the setup wizard as well. * IPv6 support: Furthermore, this was also difficult. TP-Link's terminology doesn't seem match up with the documentation that most Aussie ISPs provide for v6 support. In particular on my HFC setup I had to set the IPv6 WAN to Dynamic with the "Get IPv6 Address" set to "Non-address" and the LAN set to "SLAAC+RDNSS" for it to work. Failing to do the former would seem to generate IPv6 addresses on the LAN side but prevent routing out to the internet. * WiFi range is a bit less than I'd like, however this may the result of "Smart Connect" (band steering) being enabled. Overall I'm extremely satisfied with this router even with the above issues.redquasar

I have other TP-Link products that I have been satisfied with, so I bought this router to upgrade the speed from an older Netgear router I was using. It is pretty much an upgrade on every level. The range is much farther. I can now get wi-fi signal out in my detached garage. It can handle network demand of three TVs, two gaming PCs and half a dozen other phones and tablets. My work PC's wireless connection speed went up 157 Mbps after upgrading from a wireless N adapter (Wi-Fi 4). And it cost me about $70 as of Feb. 2022, so it definitely didn't break the bank. The reason I didn't give it five stars, despite being a pretty great upgrade, is the fact that it just would not work well with a previously 100% reliable and working TP-Link Wireless N USB adapter. All the other devices in my house use 5 GHz, but this older adapter could only connect at 2.4 GHz. On Win10 64, it would connect and say it had internet, but then pages wouldn't load and apps that needed internet wouldn't work. Sometimes it would reconnect itself somehow, other times I had to manually disconnect and reconnect to get it working again. This would happen every two to five minutes. The adapter was for my work computer, so I need consistent and reliable connection, and this was obviously unacceptable. Router has latest firmware, turned on/off OneMesh, changed 2.4 GHz channel, relocated router and adapter… nothing would stop the adapter from losing connection every two to five minutes. A quick google search shows that it's not just me with this problem… pretty common issue with their 2.4 GHz support with newer routers. The next day I went out and bought an ASUS AC1200 USB Wi-Fi adapter (another $30) that has 5 GHz support. It works great and it's way faster, but I was mainly concerned about a reliable connection, which it also has no problems. I'm just a little ticked because it feels like I was "forced" into upgrading because something that previously worked fine with LESSER hardware was made non-functional because of this "upgrade." So my main point is that if you are planning on upgrading to this router from a wireless N or older model router, you might have to plan on upgrading your wireless adapters, too, if they can't use 5 GHz. Otherwise, a very good value for the upgrade to Wi-Fi 6.Nathan D.

I got this router so I can link my pico 4 vr headset & PC on the same wifi 6 network to play games on steam vr. Thus router does that & instantly boosted my sitting room wifi from 80mbps to 300mbps on a 5ghz network. It's a good mid range router ideal for gaming. Set up is easy as you can imagine via the tether app. Scan the qr code & your away. Power down your main router then connect through ethernet cable preferably cat6 or above & what your wifi speeds & deadzones change drastically. Not the best by far but for the price & my indoor needs it is absolutely fine. I wish there were more security features & I don't like you have to pay for wifi protection. The cpu is pretty basic & it does get hot under heavy load but thanks to the usb port I connected my small desk fan & raised the router slightly with four bits of plastic at each corner for maximum ventilation. I'm happy with my purchase & will upgrade when I feel necessary.Annoyed

Purchased as a gift for my father, finally had a day off and added this modem to his Xfinity account. Everything worked fine including MOCA. Ten minutes later MOCA stopped working. Hours on the phone with Xfinity, they pull Arris on to the call for them to say yeah that feature doesn't work right so we disable it. Blatant bait and switch. Too late to return now I have to spend more to get a MOCA adapter to recreate the function built into this device that they switched off. I'd be less upset if it never worked but it was working great for the first 10 or so minutes to have it stop while streaming a movie. Not right.LWSIV

Basically, buying this modem allows your ISP to sell all your browsing activity to 3rd parties. Sure, this will allow you to return your rented modem to your ISP and save you money. HOWEVER, they lock your DNS settings. This means your IPS is the only one that can set this at the modem level. This allows them to collect all your online activity and sell it to third parties. You can still change these settings on each of your computers, phones, etc.. but seeing as I OWN this modem it's ridiculous I can't set my DNS settings on it and have all my connected devices set to auto. I wouldn't be surprised at all if xfinity/comcast payed arris to make this change to their modems. I don't mind my ISP seeing my browsing but them selling it is just not okay.marioio

2 years of use no issues i have xfinitys gigspeed plan and get 400-700mbs speed on wifi which is expected depending on what time of day network has congestion and signal interference with wireless but wired i get 1gbs sustained no issues. Modem is fairly future proof with gigspeed becoming the standard in 5 years getitng the jump ona gigspeed modem router combo is always a good idea youll save its cost 3x over in 5-6 years of use and its more than capable of lasting that long with the gig speed capability. Works better than your standard rental in singal strengh aswell i have no issues connecting to wifi in my backyard drive way side walk etc basicly my whole home and 90% of my yard are covered in wifi where as the rental sections of my home inside would have no singal like the basement or upstairs bathroom.tonyB

Bought to upgrade from older modem and router. This combo unit was easy to setup, and activated quickly through Comcast app. Like that I will have one less thing on the desk with the combo modem/router, and when speed tested was getting speeds in the 240 mpbs on our 200mpbs plan, both with the directly connected PC, and the wifi connected laptop in the other room. Also getting over 200 mbps speeds from upstairs. Am glad I finally got around to upgrading.Lisa

Terrible modem do NOT BUY!!! It’s completely insecure and opens you up to hackers. Arris changed their policy and no longer allows user to change user login. So ever single modem arris in use is “admin” and all the urls are 192.168.0.1. If you have a background in IT like I do; this is terrifying. A hacker can hack your password in less than 60 seconds. It’s vital that both defaults setting “admin” and “password” are changed to keep your network secure. Only one change doesn’t cut it.JLH1980

I bought this after seeing that it cost $14/month to lease Xfinity's equipment for WiFi. I did a lot of research for compatible devices and landed on this once because the reviews were pretty standard when compared to options with higher price points. Xfinity sent self-install instructions and I struggled with them/the Arris instructions for 40 minutes and could not get it to work. Finally, I called Xfinity and they told me they needed to register my device before it would connect. Very frustrating because the instructions were unclear, and I was on hold for a while with customer service. After that initial hiccup, this seems to be working well and I have no complaints. It will pay for itself in less than a year instead of leasing Xfinity's equipment. My advice is just to call customer service straight away and save the frustration of trying to get this connected yourself.Sarah

Bought this modem router combo 4 years ago, I have to say, never gived up on me, not even once! Reliable performance is a must, I honestly don't care about the speed, 100 Mbps Internet Service that I have for 3 devices in my household is plenty; whole this modem-router can go all the way up to 340 Mbps. Most of the household router-modem is built cheaply, require the famous troubleshooting method, "turn off or unplug the power and turn it back on, it will work again!" theory. But, not with the C3700-100NA modem-router combo. I have uses this router for web development hosting too, and hosted wirelessly between the router-modem and the server, yes! You hear that right, wirelessly! 3 and a half years now, it still going strong. A hundred visitors per day dynamic web traffic, never letting me down. This consumer router-modem combo packed with quality commercial-grade quality. I highly recommended.AToP

I thought it was working ok for 6 months but had lots of buffering and freezing problems when streaming video. I blamed this on the internet and not the router. I have a 100mg connection that clocked 90 on ethernet, 40 on 2.4 wireless, and 70 on 5 wireless. Ok but not what it should have been. After 6 months it started dropping the internet connection. The wireless worked ok but no internet connection. Turned it off and back on repeatedly and it would connect to the internet for anywhere between 30 seconds to 6 hours. Checked all connections and ISP signal strength was good so it wasn't the ISP or cable connections. After 3 days it would no longer connect at all. Googled reviews of this router and found this is a known issue. We can't live without internet so I needed a replacement without waiting on a warranty return (which I read is questionable anyway). I've had better results with several Motorola modems and routers that never break. I have a Vonnage Motorola router still working fine after 11 years. So I replaced this Netgear with a Motorola MG7550 cable/wifi modem. Right out of the box my 100mg connection clocks over 118mg on both ethernet and the 5gz wireless! The 4.2 clocks at 70. With the Motorola there is no buffering or freezing. Even the PC connected to it is faster I guess from not having to deal with the faulty modem. I've had other Netgear equipment in the past without issues, but this model is faulty.Bar

I bought the netgear modem/router because I have always heard great things about their products. Barely a year went by, my lights flicker in my house a few times and the entire modem is not working. So, I spend endless hours with customer service, only to be told that I could pay to have technical support. And that that is all the "help" they could provide me with, apart from the simple troubleshooting. For the $200 they were trying to get me to pay, I just went out and bought a new modem/router. Very disappointing that a few flickers of lighting was enough to take a year old modem out of service.P Dem

First, let me say this Netgear router/modem combo is by far the best product I’ve ever used for internet service! The set up with Comcast was extremely easy and the download speeds were super fast! Working from home due to the pandemic, this was just what I needed. I bought my first unit in Sept 2019. It worked as advertised. I had multiple devices connected to it and I still had smoking internet speeds! Fast forward to May of 2020. After owning it for about 8 months, it started dropping the internet connection and I was constantly having to shut down my computers or devices and reboot my router. Then at one point it just shut down and wouldn’t turn on. I contacted Netgear and after some trouble shooting, they determined it was toast. To their credit, they sent a replacement unit out at no charge. Way to go Netgear Customer Service (NCS)! Fast forward to the middle of June 2021. As explained earlier, I work from home. I started to notice that the internet connection would drop and then reconnect multiple times during my work day. I was getting spotty connection on my other devices from time to time as well. Not to mention download speeds were so slow! Yesterday I was in the middle of a work presentation (using Microsoft Teams) when my internet connection completely failed! With no warning my connection went belly up and I was done for the day! Not good! I contacted NCS, and found my router was just outside the 1 year warranty period. So, after agreeing to add an extended warranty purchase to my router (for a good chunk of $$$) I was transferred to their gear head tech support branch. After 2 hrs and 40 minutes, the tech said my router was fried! For those considering buying this device, the shock of cold water for a review like this kinda disappointing. You should not that most reviews are by people who’ve only owned it for a few months. Still in the honeymoon phase. I read a similar review to mine and saw that while 43 people thought it was helpful, 64 did not. That review didn’t trash Netgear and neither does mine. Bottom line – This Netgear router/modem combo is BY FAR the best device I have ever hooked up to my Comcast service and got blazing fast speeds and it covered my whole (2500ft) house extremely well! The problem, it just does not last. If you do ignore this review and buy it anyway, buy, buy, buy, the extended warranty for as long as you can. This is a single router/modem combo unit with (4) external (illuminated) antennas that has been working OK and has enough range for all rooms in our 2500 SF house. Before buying this, we most recently had a new NetGear AC-1900 (C7000v2) Router w/ Modem that worked great for a while with an AC-1900 range extender, though that setup only lasted a few months until the Router/Modem could no longer recognize and connect wirelessly to the extender. The ISP tech could not make it work again, so we decided on this single unit, which DOES provide enough signal for the whole house (though not quite as strong in most distant rooms as the former with range extender). The 4 external antennas allow this unit to throw more signal than our old router/modem unit, and our kids say their Wi-Fi signal works well for mid-level gaming and school. My own Ethernet connection to this machine tests (on average) at around 450 Mbps download and 38 Mbps upload speeds with our mid-range ISP service plan. In my personal opinion, NetGear does not always have great setup instructions. Our ISP tech set this one up for us, and he said this one was easy but did also mention the "tribal knowledge" that is often required for setting up NetGear equipment. (Hey NetGear – did you hear that ? Well-worded instructions with complete illustrations ARE meaningful !!) Parting advice – the Geek Squad protection I bought was worth it when I returned the previous equipment. I have the same protection on this one.UncleFerd

I consider myself tech savvy, and have configured many Cable Modems and WiFi Gateways. However, the C7800 has been a major problem for me. The performance of the management interface 192.168.0.1 is a huge disappointment. Maybe I just got a bad C7800. I did a system reset and was able to set up the SSIDs and passphrases. Then a day later when I logged into the interface it was very very slow, and often did not even return the sub-menus. It never did produce the device list, and consequently I was not able to assign any IP addresses to MAC addresses. Also, about half of my Smart Devices were not able to attach to the network even though I used the same SSID and the same passphrase as my previous WiFi gateway. I'm very disappointed. If customer support can resolve my issue, I will be happen to amend this review. But at the moment, I am very disappointed and cannot recommend the C7800.cicook

The Eero 6+ AX-3000 is a 3 pack, dual band mesh wifi 6 system that is easy to set up, fast, and provides excellent range capable of handling at least a 3000 square foot house. Set up and control of the system is done entirely through an app downloaded to your Iphone or Android phone. In my case, it was an Iphone. Set up allows you to keep the SSID and password from your previous network which had been a Velop tri band mesh system. I found this tremendously helpful since all of the 25 or so devices that I have immediately recognized the new network without additional configuration. The first of the 3 pack devices is connected to your cable modem, etc. and is configured during the initial setup. The additional 2 devices can be configured during initial set up or any time later through the app. I ended up using only 2 of the 3 pack devices since the 3rd one would have been overkill for my 2200 square foot house unless I wanted to extend the network deep into the backyard or my neighbor’s yard. As I mention, I previously had a two pack, tri band Velop mesh system. This system had served me well for several years, however, I have recently acquired several wifi 6 devices and the Velop system was not wifi 6. I have about 25 devices on my system including 4 HDTVs which I constantly stream. In actual operation, the eero system felt very quick and no buffering occurred. Range was also excellent exceeding my previous Velop system. I have 1 gigabyte per second internet coming into the house. About 20 feet from the router and in the same room as the router, I was able to achieve about 900mbps on my laptop compared to about 750mbps with the previous Velop system. A story below the router and through 3 walls, I achieved around 250mbps compared to 200mbps with the previous system. I you are a heavy user of video or other data intensive devices and want a network that is easy to set up, fast, and with great range, I highly recommend the Eero 6+ AX3000.TheHodster

It might be silly but first impressions are important and the packaging for these was very robust with tight tolerances. Just what I would expect from something in this price range. My coverage area is quite large and extends to a detached barn where my wood working studio is located. Even with very high powered single unit devices I have trouble with coverage. Not with this system I have them spaced across my property such that I get great coverage everywhere that I need. It is sort of like cell phone towers where as you move around the system calculates which node will give you the best reception and will switch you seamlessly if you move or in the unlikely even that one drops offline. This is fast too giving gigabit speeds. This is done by communication between the units on another radio frequency as not to take up network resources. My internet is not that fast but I do a lot of internal file sharing and moving and really appreciate the speed this gives my local network. I checked with customer support and they said up to 3 more units can be added to the system presumably doubling the coverage area. eero 6+ works as a smart home hub so you can control supported Thread and Zigbee devices with Alexa. Use your eero 6+ with Alexa to control lights, locks, plugs, and more. I chatted into best buy and they said this is also compatible with google home. All in all this is one of the few products I would give an extra star to if I could. Installation was easy too.yogabear

80+ old house w lots of metal lathe/plaster so very difficult to get good WIFI 70 feet to living room TV. Had an AC1200 that was fair until Spectrum rearranged things during a service call. Anyway I connected Eero to my to my existing 5AC router and got an Excellent result. LR TV was at 35 now at 147! Maintained old router for 2.4/5 ghz for other uses as wanted Eero dedicated to LR TV. Would probably have bought TP-LINK Deco X60 V1 AX3000 if I had known Eero was trying to "require" a $99/yr subscription for what most router manufacturers for provide free. But I just kept swiping away the acceptance screens without filling in anything, bypassed the authorization pages and did not enter any payment information so hopefully that will be the end of that. Except that it probably voids my warranty as I did phone them for assistance at one point and they refused to help me unless I signed up for the $99 a year plan. I hate that mesh vendors require install via a cell phone. Mine is for emergencies not daily use so I am not real good with it. I am much better with written instructions but did find a great video to watch while I did the phone thing.BrendaD

This is the best mesh point system that I have bought. We have Xfinity internet and our router can’t give the whole house internet as we have a big house. This 3 google nest mesh point system delivers to the whole house without dead spots and switches out device’s to the closest point. I have used netgear and I would always be connected to whatever point connected to my phone when I would get home and it would stay connected to that point until I was out of range. With the Google mesh points, the router points know basically where your device is and switches automatically so you have the best internet connection with fast speeds and no interruptions. Where the netgear I had several problems with being connected and not having good speeds and or even having connection but no internet. I’m very impressed with Google and there technology on this product. Great for gaming, 4k movies/shows, smart home products like google nest mini,Alexa, eufy doorbell, smart door locks, Google nest thermostat and smart light bulbs.AlsomEthanGaming

Recently moved from a small one-bedroom apartment into a house, so the drop in WiFi signal from one end of the house to the other was surprising. Our internet speeds are 200 Mbps down/ 10 Mbps up and we receive that while in the room with the router. Moving to the other end of the home where we sleep and that signal would drop to around 30 mbps down and 8 Mbps up. After purchasing this kit, the router is still on one side of the home, we have one access point in the middle of the home in our library and another in the primary bedroom and we maintain the 200 Mbps down / 10 Mbps pretty much everywhere in and around the home. We're already a decently heavy Google household so the fact that the access points double as voice assistants is pretty handy as well. The largest con to the Nest Wifi router is the fact that it only has one ethernet port. This is fine, because an 8 port Gigabit Ethernet switch is like $25 at most. But I can see how people who aren't necessarily tech-savvy have no idea what a network switch even is. The other con is the lack of choosing what WiFi network to connect to (whether it be 5 Ghz or 2.4 GHz). For the most part, the automation works well, but there are a few times where my partners desktop will only connect to 2.4 Ghz and it leaves her with a slightly slower connection. Overall kinda minor, as it quickly adjusts, but still an inconvenience. With that being said, I still think this Mesh Router from Nest is the go-to option for those who are already a Google household. So far, the issues presented are minor at best, but I would highly recommend picking up a network switch with this router to ensure you have enough Ethernet ports available.Matt

We were looking to extend our gigabit wifi coverage and already owned the previous generation Google Wifi mesh extenders, so I figured upgrading to the Google Nest Wifi made sense as the old version had served us well. These newer ones perform as advertised: stronger coverage over a wider area thanks to the updated hardware in the current units! We upgraded to whole home security cameras, so I wanted to ensure we didn’t see any dropouts or higher battery drain due to poor wireless speed/strength, and so far I’m happy to report they are working out great. A big positive for me was the hardware microphone mute for these units. Honestly I would have preferred being able to buy these without the built-in microphone/voice assistance feature just out of privacy concerns, but being able to disable it manually on the hardware itself and see the LEDs on the bottom of the points change to Orange/Red to show the mic is disabled once you flip the switch is handy. The biggest negative I have for these was that the setup was not flawless, and even required me to reach out to support as it wasn’t anything that could be fixed through standard troubleshooting like power cycling or doing a factory reset and redoing the network setup from scratch. The other issue I had was trying to add my old google wifi units as access points since their documentation notes the old ones could still be used as long as you didn’t try to exceed their recommended “limit” of having no more than 5 access points connected to a single router. After factory resetting the older units and trying to add them to the mesh network, I noticed considerable issues with signal degradation as it seemed like it was actually introducing interference rather than boosting signal coverage in other areas of the house. The new Google Home app that lets you control/monitor your network is pretty good overall as well, aside from returning a lot of “Unnamed Device” names for the hardware found on our network – I don’t recall the old “Google Wifi” app having the same issue. Slight negatives aside, I am still quite pleased with the newer Google Nest Wifi mesh router and access points – the speeds are solid, they transmit fairly well throughout the walls and home in general, and aside from the initial setup hiccups, they’ve been performing flawlessly ever since. Overall, I’d highly recommend the Nest Mesh router/points system and since the rating system doesn’t allow it, I’d note that if possible I’d give this one 4.5 stars out of 5.Matt

This is the best router we’ve ever owned, it’s lightning fast, keeps the Internet speeds consistent, has a whole range of functions and options that most of the other high-end routers do not offer. I am a truck driver, and I am gone a lot. The router does security scans on all of the devices in my network, I get those updates real time to my phone no matter where I’m at in the country. I’m glad we got it. My network is more secure, and I get a notification of any new device that connects to it. So I have security, speed, and real network monitoring are important to you for your home network, then definitely get one of these. It’s sports up to 20 devices streaming simultaneously, with no lag that we’ve experienced before with other routers. We are going to buy another one as a back up in case anything ever happens to this one. Thank you for reading this, and thank you to Netgear for bringing all of us this awesome Nighthawk router.Jeff

We live in a area with no internet, none! So I Purchased this router because it said it worked with ATT Sim cards. It does not! Twice went to the ATT store and they activated 2 different sim cards for me and neither worked to give us a hotspot. Finally one ATT agent attempted to set up router manually and it came up requesting a TMobile login. The app for Nighthawk is terrible! You can’t do anything on the app until you have internet connection, well what about the people who have no internet and trying to set it up?!? Frustrating! No paperwork or manual in the box, had to go back to website and look up PDF for manual to find out that you needed LTE antennas. Oh, which you have to order 3rd party, because Netgear doesn’t sell them. Overall this was a terrible experience! Equipment didn’t work, wasn’t provided with everything needed to use with LTE only. The to top it all off and weeks of trying to get this thing to work and it didn’t, I called to return it and they tried to tell me that I only had 14 days! They did finally let me return it, but only because I told them how it says compatible with ATT and it clearly isn’t. Why don’t you make a simple router that works for hotspots for all us rural people who don’t have WiFi of fiber.JB2010

I own a couple of wireless routers and I have owned / used many more. I started using TP Link some years back and have been very happy with them. My primary network uses a much more expensive highly configured device, but I just needed something simple that would be reliable and get the job done and this fits the bill. This thing is easy to configure and it just does the job out of the box (but change the password at least). Is this for a "power user" that intends to do a lot of configuration? No! It is, however, more than sufficient for my friends, and family that are not overly technical and will not reconfigure everything; but it might let you, my other TP Link devices let me do that, I just have not tried that with this one. I wanted it to do a simply job and it does it well for a very reasonable cost.Andrew P

My little home network was being choked by a 10 year old Zyxel router that just couldn't handle the speeds we needed for streaming nowadays. We finally settled on this very inexpensive solution and boy, am I glad we did! This is a great little router for a small home or office. It has multiple LAN ports for wired connections and an on/off switch if you have to reset it, but I haven't had to reset it once since I got it three months ago. The build quality feels a little on the cheap side compared to much more expensive routers with the same technology, but it doesn't put out to much heat and seems to function flawlessly. There's no reason to spend more on this technology. Upgrade your router with confidence. This little baby rocks!n.

I bought this super inexpensive router to use as an access point to extend the range of the crummy router supplied by my ISP. I've run an ethernet cable from the ISP router to this router. This new router is on the other side of the house and in the basement, where the kids' rooms are. Setup was incredibly easy. Now everyone in the house is enjoying a full 60mbps — including multiple streaming devices, and a step-son who's gaming with his buddies 24/7. It has simplified my life immensely.Robert

I bought this to replace a Linksys EA6900, an 802.11ac dual band router with limited range on the 5G band. We needed more range on the 5G. TP-Links AX11000 certainly had better range and I thought we had a winner. Setup was quick, logical, and allowed for great detail. My network has 2 desktops connected by ethernet; one desktop and three laptops connected by wifi; and two printers (Epson WF-4830 and HP OfficeJet 8600). Installation of the TP-Links AX11000 went perfectly until we tried to use the printers. When a wifi client moved from 5G band to a 2.4G band, it lost connection to the printer. I called TP-Links tech support three times. Twice they sent me on wild goose chases. The third time they told me to call the printer tech support. I went back to MicroCenter and purchased an Ubiquity AmpliFi Alien router. Installation went perfectly. Neither the Ubiquity nor the Linksis router had the printer problem. I returned the TP-Links to MicroCenter and they were very good about the return. I like working with MicroCenter. TP-Links… not so much. I cannot recommend this product because the TP-Links support failed to help me solve the problem and in one case refused even to try.dsimerly

Can't say I'm that impressed. I've had an Asus DSL N55U modem router for over six years now. No problems. But I thought it was probably time to upgrade before it decided to fail on me. I'm not a gamer but I thought by going to a top of the range product like this TP-Link-Archer-AX11000-MU-MIMO-Gigabit-Wi-Fi-Router I'd get slightly better coverage throughout my relatively small house, and that the wifi connectivity between devices within my LAN would give me faster file transfers. But no. It's almost exactly the same as previously. The only positive I can offer is that it was extremely easy to set up. I've recently moved to Starlink and setting that up with the Asus was quite a mission, but this TP-link just did it with no problems.SimonR892

I.e. Perhaps you want to ensure your office laptop gets internet access priority over someone else watching Netflix on the same network.- Can turn device lights off if you want to maintain a dark room- Can connect a mobile sim dongle so has a fall back option if internet service providers cable or fibre fails. Cons: Everything about this router is pretty good so I could not find any negatives for users who do not plan to delve into the many admin options. It's easy to configure for those who 'just want it to work' but it also has plenty of additional controls for techs to tweak.The only points of note are for techs n geeks who need to take advantage of the more amin type functions.The only negative I found was there is a max limit to the number of IP address reservations. This will NOT affect 99% of users so it's only an issue for users who need to identify more than circa 15 network devices by a reserved address, where the router itself is acting as dhcp. Most people will use the dynamic ip pool so will never be affected. None the less, why has a limit been set that is significantly below the possible.I did have rebooting issues in its first week of use but I believe this was caused by the broadband connection identifying and testing the new router, after the first week the router stabilised and is now rock solid and has not required a reboot for weeks.The tether app for your mobile devices can handle all the basic actions to make changes to your router and view connection details but if you want to do more complicated admin changes you will need to use the web browser interphase, (not really a negative point, but why have an app if it cannot mimic all the functionality of the web browser interphase).For the super geeky, Note (as per most routers) the error logging messages look like protocol extractions so are not immediately obvious as to what they mean but importantly, they are there.J

Bought this because my ISP-provided router turned out to be useless, causing major DNS-related problems while denying me the ability to edit the settings I needed to in order to fix the situation.The TP-Link router has been a big improvement; far more customizable and with very few errors. The only reason the score isn't 5 is that there were been two episodes (in the last month or so) in which both wifi and ethernet access has suffered repeated drop-outs while trying to stream music and video across the network, at the end of which I had to turn the router off for a bit to recover. I actually suspect these were to do with the router overheating when placed on a flat surface, as it was extremely hot to the touch. Its main ventilation holes are on its underside and there isn't very much clearance for air to circulate, with some very small feet raising the base only slightly off the surface it's on. I have now propped it up on a couple of old bits of tile under said feet to give a lot more room for circulation and it's much cooler to the touch now; there have been no protracted episodes of flaky network access since then. So you might want to try that if you have this issue. Not a hard fix to apply, but you'd think it should be able to cool itself adequately when placed on a flat shelf. Anyway apart from that it seems a good DSL router and definitely a massive improvement over the ISP-provided one – wifi access now stretches pretty much throughout the house. Pros: Loved all the interactive stuff and being able to control it via an app on my phone. Great for sneaky teenagers trying to get on the internet past bed time! At first coverage and signal etc was great. Cons: Unfortunately, after around 9 months the signal went really bad and kept dropping out. So much so we had an engineer come out to look at our internet. Obviously, nothing wrong with it, so he suggested our router may be faulty. I went back to the network supplied router to check this theory. Well, that router had different problems of it's own! However, the network sent me a brand new upgraded router and so far ? it's been fine. So I can only assume both previous routers were faulty.Laura
