20 Best Pedals For Commuter Bike (Jan 2023 Update)

Useful for a bike that is sometimes just ridden to the shops/pub but also on longer rides, when you might want to wear cleated shoes. Bearings wear very fast and can be sloppy within six months on a bike used for commuting. A special tool (TL-PD33) costing as much as the pedals is needed to service them, since they are designed so that the bearing cone is unreachable with a normal spanner. They are not as well sealed as other SPDs, and use a simple rubber ring around the axle which soon perishes; replacements are 2 each but you can put a stack of O-rings on there instead, which will last longer. If you're happy to throw them away every year and buy a new set OR buy the expensive tool, these are ok. They are nowhere near as good value, or as well made, as the normal SPD pedals like M520, which are cheaper, easily serviceable and better sealed. But if you want to wear flat shoes sometimes, these might be your best option.rogerzilla

These pedals allow you to either use plain shoes or shoes with spd cleats. The metal used in their construction is robust and a pair on my touring bike have done about 10,000km with the only issue being that the bearing now need a service which requires a special Shimano tool to tighten the lock nut for race/shaft. Cleats and a multi-language instructions were included with the pedals. There is a provision on the pedal for click in reflectors which are not included in the package. You will have to find you own source for reflectors. I used 4 from unused basic pedals. Remember to use some grease on the pedal thread when attaching them to the cranks so that the parts do not corrode together.Iain M.

These pedals went on a hardtail that I tend to grab for more casual cruise-around-the-neighborhood use. So I can go for a quick spin without needing my normal SPD shoes. That makes these pedals a winner for convenience. I also want to use this same bike on more "serious" trails so having the SPD clips makes them fully functional for longer rides. The pedals normally rest with the SPD side facing up so clipping in usually works on the first try without toe-flipping the pedal. I ride normal 2-sided SPD pedals on all my other bikes and those are far easier to clip in to as you never have to care about what side it up. The bearings run smooth and SPD lock/release are as consistent as with all my other Shimano pedals. Despite the minor inconvenience of needing the occasionally reorient the pedal to get the correct side up I really enjoy the convenience of not having to swap pedals. 2-in-1 devices are always a compromise but this one's are worth it.Jeff

I'm fairly new to road cycling and have been using these pedals for about a month and really like them. Takes some practice when it comes to getting used to clipping in and clipping out, but they are easy to adjust the binding based on how much effort you prefer to unclip. I bought these for a second bike I own, and after about 12 rides, have found they deliver wildly inconsistent release action, even with the tension screw set to the max (8 full turns clockwise). They seem to require a different degree of 'twist' every time I dis-engage. At first I thought it might be my due to slightly worn cleats, as I used my existing KEO cleats from my other bike, but even installing the cleats that came with the Look Keo Classic 3s, I found either it took too much effort to get out, or not enough and accidental releases were frequent. I also have the Look Keo 2 Max pedals which I have used for years on my primary bike. The Look Keo 2 are roughly the same pedal, only they have a stainless contact plate and a slightly different contour. The metal plate seems to make a huge difference over the waffled plastic contact point offered on the Look Keo Classic 3,Tthe metal seems to give a consistent un-waivering touchpoint for the cleat, where the Classic 3's waffled hard plastic seems to be a bit of a 'grit trap' causing a slightly less confident memorized experience, leading one to wonder "what's it going to do this time'.Juan

Used Look since they arrived on the scene. Always issues with bearings and cleat bolts being easy to damage. Such a nice surprise to open the box and see new cleat bolts with a sturdier hex fixing. Larger footplate always helps and the bearing I am yet to comment on but hoping they have revamped these to avoid play. Overall a great set of pedals for the price point.The1PK

I bought these because I ride my fat bike all winter and wanted the larger form factor to accommodate winter boots. I have used them for 1 year (4 seasons) and ridden over 2500kms on a variety of terrain, on snow/mud, thru water, from -30C to +30C. They have performed well and the grip is good. The larger size works well with a winter boot but doesn't hinder performance with a smaller light hiking shoe. It is a low profile pedal so you need to lower your saddle (could be an issue with your post and seat tube). They are easy to maintain and that is a good thing because you will need to service them (a lot). After 3 months I noticed the first issue — took the pedals apart (no special tools needed) and was surprised to see one of them was bone dry (no factory grease left). I suspect this was a manufacturing issue since it was pretty clean inside. I find I am servicing them about every 3 months now as the grease (Phil Woods) is breaking down due to contamination. It only takes a few minutes per pedal and the grease port is a nice assist. But it is something to keep an eye on (fwiw: my other pedals can go years between servicings). My big concern is the build quality. There is what appears to be an aluminum bushing on the crank-end of the shaft and this is starting to oxidize (no longer spins smoothly). It got so bad that one of the pedals seized up and I had to take it apart, free it up, and use a machine oil to get it turning without too much friction. For a pedal in this price range this is very disappointing and I am concerned about the longevity of them. For comparison my road pedals use a similar design but that bushing is stainless steel. If this persists, I will be returning them. If it weren't for the large platform, I'd not recommend these as I think there are better value pedals on the market.Spiker

the stamp1 large pedals are wider than the similar composite pedals from PNW & OneUp. They feel solid & spin easily. the citron color is what i was hoping for, like a high-viz yellow. good pin/ cleat layout on the surfaces, well spread out to make full foot contact. they're in the box, new pedals. i'd buy from Abaxo again, delivered as described & ahead of schedule in good conditionxref2016

I thought they would take some getting used to, but they feel like any other pedal, just without the bumpy bits. I've been using them in wet, snowy, and cold conditions – so far no issues at all. Ok, so fit and float on clips is a matter of personal preference. These work for me, but it's really just what you like and what you're used to. That said, I love these because there's no "wrong way up". Just smack 'em in the right spot and you're ready to go. One less thing to think about. This is my second pair. The bearings finally died on the first pair after 5000 miles of road cycling in the hills and mountains around Seattle. I'm not a particularly light guy, and I ride hard. They've bee scraped up, ground into the pavement, and given plenty of tough love. The surround protects the business end of the clips and, quite frankly, just looks good. It also provide a bit of a platform if you you're sitting at a green light, missed the clip, and need to get a few pedal strokes in *now*. It's not enough of a platform to ride comfortably on much longer than that (the egg beater sticks up above it a little), but it helps. So 5000 miles seems like a fine service life for what I put these through, and I'm looking forward to the next 5K.Ben K

I have been using this model over 10 years. Original purhase was to replace my $400 Ti spindle Candy pedal on 2009 and decided to give this model a try for the low weight and very low price. No performance or feel difference between Candy 1’s and 11’s. I have them on 6 bikes(cross, mtb, commuter, fat bike). On a few occasions when I went to buy replacement cleats, I just bought new Candy 1’s as the price delta was only $35 more and I got a new set of pedals at the same time. No issues in mud or wet snow and I never have issues during wet muddy cross season. My oldest pair is 9 years old, on my commuter bike and I just disassemble once a year and re-grease(it takes five minutes with one screw driver and one socket wrench). They also work well with the shoes shields if you have carbon sole shoes. You will not be disappointed.Dave

Been on Egg Beaters for some 15+ yrs now. They are on my dual suspension cross country Santa Cruz Tall Boy and my 4 season Surly crosscheck commuter. They are great for 2 bolt type cleats. Four sided entry great for frequent entry/exit like cyclocross or commuting. Fair amount of float. I do note more shoe/pedal rub with these than some others, which is mildly aggravating when commuting, not noticeable on my Santa Cruz Tall Boy. Like most two bolt cleats, more risk of a hot spot along the sole when compared to road cleat (3 bolt) systems, but 3 bolt cleats dont work on trail or if any walking needed. Compared to spd, I like the forward or reverse entry and 4 sided vs 2 sided. I put about 500 miles a month commuting on these.Matthew T

I had wanted a second pair of clips for my spin bike and had spent a great deal of time looking for a matching set to my road bike to ensure compatibility with my shoes. These pedals are a great value.They are light, made very well and position for clip-in very well. I am a regular road rider but I do not race. The price is right. I ordered them after having a bit of trouble clipping into a new set of Look Keo 2 Max pedals. I've been riding clip in's since the 90s, mainly Look. However the new Key 2s had a small "lip" at the front edge that always seemed to snag my shoes/cleats. I looked carefully at the Shimano PD-R-7000s and the lip seemed smaller. It was and now the problems getting in from a standing start are nearly eliminated. The one thing that is a bit of a problem is the axle length. I wish the offset between the pedal and edge of the crank was a bit longer. I am getting used to the closeness but it is just an adjustment problem on my part. A slightly longer axle can be ordered but it increases the price. I highly recommend these pedals for training and touring on the road, including with climbs.reggmc2012

These will be going on my new bike, when it finally arrives. When I bought them, Sigma were offering the best price for them. The pedals are quite solid, but not actually heavy, thanks to the pedal platform being carbon. The tension adjuster is clearly readily accessible and the indicator is clear to see. The tension can be dialled back to allow clipping in and out with little effort or tightened up for a more secure seating. The set come complete with a set of yellow Shimano cleats (6 degrees of float) and all of the bolts and washers. I can well appreciate why these pedals get such a good rating from othersAndyH56

Bought a new MTB and these pedals were my first upgrade. Won't mention the bike brand but it was one of the major ones. It came with composite platforms and they were ok but were a little lacking in the grip area. Plus they had reflectors on them so that was lowering my "cool factor". Looked at a lot of brands and reviews before settling on the Hopes. Yes you can get cheaper pedals but I believe most of the time you get what you pay for. I wear a size 13 shoe and I think these pedals are the perfect size for me. I usually just wear regular running shoes when I bike. I installed the pins all around the outside and left out the middle pins. In addition to the pins the machined grooves also provide additional grip. I wouldn't say the grooves are sharp but they do have an edge to them. I have plenty of grip with these. I have yet to slip off or spin the cranks and mash my shins but when I do I'm sure I will feel it. It took a little time to put all the pins in but it was easy and I have plenty left over to replace any lost or damaged ones should something happen. I like the idea that I can add, change, or replace pins as needed to fit my taste. Each pin has a dab of Loctite on them which is a good thing but I think this also makes them a little tight to screw in. Some of mine and not 100% in because I was afraid I was going to break the enclosed allen wrench but it got the job done. So far I'm very happy with these, I got the blue ones and they look pretty slick with my orange frame. I would totally recommend these and if/when the time comes I will buy another pair. I can't imagine anyone not liking these, so just buy them and get back out on the trial.Eric

The Hope pedals are my favorite. I have Deity and HT, and these are the go to pedal for all my bikes. I recently made the swap after decades of riding clipped in to flats. These pedals with a good pair of shoes are almost like being clipped in. They have lasted well into my second season with many rock strikes and heavy use. So far I have not had to replace any pins, but they are a breeze to do so if needed. They wear with a fair amount of character. I have red and black pedals and as they scuff and wear, the AL underneath shows up with a fair amount of class. They look better used! Upon opening the box I knew at first glance that they were of a superior quality. The larger platform is brilliant. I was a bit scared of the pins once in place but oh boy, they are amazing! From first placement on pedals the grip was phenomenal, with this my confidence grew more. These F20's have also given me extra pedalling power…..just flawless. These are well finished pedals – knock off of the campagnolo pedals of similar design. Outside finish is high quality but the bearings, while quite functional, are not to the standards of the older Campy stuff. Great value for the money. I use these on several bikes.edwardmce13

They look great and built fantastically well, ride smooth as well. But.. they are also super-narrow and if that's not enough there's a little tooth on the edge of the pedal that constrains your foot and doesn't even give it a chance to hang off a bit (not that you'd want that anyway). Also I'm not a fan of one-sided pedals that can't work both ways (top/bottom) – it's just really uncomfortable to pedal when it's upside down and also quite hard to turn it the right way even with the little tooth. So yeah, it's all about the aesthetics and your personal preference (and width of your feet of course).dmitrij.p

The construction of these pedals seems very good. The axles turn smoothly and quietly with no grit or end play. The polish on the pedal body is nice and bright with very little hazing near the hard to reach areas. The The cages are of a matte finish and the color is slightly lighter than the picture, being a more lighter Champagne than the golden color. Weight is average as one could expect but would be at home on a standard all around Road Bike. Mine will be used on a mid 70's Peugeot Mixte restoration project. I believe the quality and finish will provide years of steady service. I am looking forward to testing them out when installed.3aubars

These are hands down the best flat pedals I've ever run! The grip is incredible, but the platform is really what sets this pedal apart from other competitors. The minimal stack height is magical on the trail and allows me to charge harder without risking pedal strikes (as compared to other options). These pedals have also been incredibly durable! I was stoked to buy my first pair of orange One Up aluminum pedals for my orange Santa Cruz Hightower. The pedals looked great and I loved the bigger size and the grip. The pedals worked flawlessly for the first three weeks. I was on a ride the other day and the right pedal started squeaking very loudly and seized up completely! It was very annoying. I took the pedal off when I got home, which was also very difficult, and found out that I couldn’t even rotate the axle by hand. After seeing other similar reviews, I immediately went to my local bike shop and bought some top notch RaceFace Atlas aluminum pedals. I could feel the quality difference during my first ride on the Atlas pedals. I’m going to try and take the One Up pedals apart and see if I can grease them and possibly salvage them. If I can’t, they go into the garbage! I wouldn’t buy One Up pedals again. Don’t buy style over substance! Lesson learned.Randal J

These are also not compatible with Shimano alloy crank arms. Stripped the crank arm on bike bike left me stranded and having to push bike 5 miles 1000ft downhill. I had to in the past to reach out to one up customer support and they did their job but in such a manner like they done a huge favor to me so I’m not even going to reach out about these pedals because I don’t want to be treated like a nuisance. In the future I’ll be trying to stay away but I have so many of their products: chain guide, carbon bar, pedals, edc tool. Some of it I bought before the negative customer support interaction and some came stock on the bike. I’m any case if there’s a choice I’d steer clear from this brand. For example PNW makes great cockpit components and droppers and MRP makes great drivetrain protection solutions. I’d rather opt for that. DMR and deity and handful of others makes great pedals. I’d rather support these brands because at least customer support their treat you with respect and afterwards don’t tell you that they did you such a great favor and you should thankful that they saved your life like OneUp doesn’t have any other competitionIvan P.

My third pair. Good positive connection to the bike, super reliable and fully rebuildable. I ordered the short pin kit (7mm versus stock 9mm pins) to get a bit more movement with my feet. Stock pins are too grippy for me with 5.10 soles – like being clipped in.Crash

I love these pedals but if you purchase be aware of the following: The studs require a thread locker such as blue Loc-tite. I didn't put any locker on mine and lost 5 studs the first ride. While it's possible that I didn't torque those studs as much as the others, I tend to feel that either the studs should come pre-installed or the pedals should come with thread locker. If you lose studs you'll have a difficult time finding something from the hardware store. I did some scouting around and found the most suitable replacement to be 8 or 10mm set screws (M4x0.7). I chose not to go this route because I'd rather have original hardware. Even with 5 missing studs (on one pedal) I still have great grip and feel confident using them. Lastly, these pedals come with washers. While I'm happy I didn't have to purchase washers, I'd prefer that the pedals fit without washers since I remove my pedals regularly to fit my bike into my car. I'm just waiting to lose one. I switched from Shimano XT SPD pedals which kept creaking with almost every pedal stroke. unless the cleat or clip-in mechanism was greased. I use these on the road. They do provide a nice wider contact platform and minimal to no creaks. Solid clip-in. just like Shimano. Lightweight!! Wish I could afford another Ti axle pair. though also happy with the Race Carbon on my other bike. Recommended! Smooth transaction. Good communication. Fast shipping to the USA.Ernest

Very cheap in red compared to black. I don't mind – can't see when I am on the bike, nobody else to admire them in Covid times and they match the orange, grey, black and yellow highlights elsewhere on my bike. I am using Shimano SPD cleats (rather than the supplied Look ones) which seem fine. They are on my road bike and I have done 3 x 100k rides and a number of 50k rides on them and so far they are comfortable, secure and solid. Replaced Shimano M530s with these as I wondered if Looks offer a better pedalling platform. Maybe its an illusion but I think the Looks are marginally better than the M530s. I needed a decent metal pedal after bashing and often getting pedal struck on wider, square diety polymer pedals. I've had these for a few rides now and they have a markedly wider platform than the previous Atlas, version, which I mistakenly bought instead, rode once and realized the were too narrow for my size 11 shoe. I use an RC powerline which is not all that wide. These have very long pins in the center but they conform to the pedal's concave dimensions for a good control feel downhill. Super thin too so the end result is a light, strong shoe grabber that won't let go. Tons of washers to adjust pin length as well, if a looser grip is what you want.Mountainjack

Wow! The pins on these pedals are so grippy, I don't think my 5.10 shoes will ever slip off. This is exactly what I was looking for. The pedals are beautifully made and come with spare pins and a full set of washer/spacers. I added the washers because, as delivered, the pins seemed practically like golf shoe spikes. The washers shorten them slightly but they're still pretty long. I've used the pedals for nearly a month now, riding 3 days a week. They were easy to get used to and I really appreciate the confidence I have, knowing my feet will remain firmly planted to the pedals until I lift them off. Also, after any number of pedal strikes on rocks, the pedals/pins show no signs of wear or damage. I'm really happy with these pedals.Steve from Spokane

Solid looking, they come with specific cleats although they are supposedly compatible with the SPD. Trail-oriented model somewhat narrower than the upper version for wider shoes. I have not yet tested their resistance to mud but they promise to be durable based on their robust construction and they turn even better than Shimano XTs, I hope they last for years.Arka

I needed a pedal for my gravel bike that had a little more surface area for the balls of my feat. I guess I could've spent $300 or more on stiffer sole shoes but I like the shoes I have. My previous pedals were Shimano PD-M8100 XT's which are a good mountain bike pedal but hurt after an hour or so. These are so much more comfortable and they're extremely easy to engage. I'll still get that burning sensation but it's not quite as bad and I can ride longer in comfort. They also look great!Kirk D

I do not want them They are not as they are described! The shoe cleats are not compatible with SPD cleats. The cleats probably work with the MKS pedals but do not work with SPD pedals requiring another pair of shoes to use them. I do not have a working printer so I cannot print the return label. Pedal is not dual sided. Natural inclination of pedal to orient with spindle shaft exposed upwards. Rider does not apply force to platform, but rather to shaft. Very uncomfortable. Possibly tolerable with foot straps, but I never tried. Put up with them for a year, but they ruin the experience of riding. Had squeaking/creaking issues also. Product looked great out of the package and was easy to install. Pedals are labeled with an "L" and an "R" to keep installation simple. The chrome finish was not as shiny as it appears in the photo, so because these pedals were purchased more for looks than for functionality it left a little to be desired. I bought these and some cheap plastic toe clips for my road bike. These things showed up crusty feeling and needed the cone nuts readjusted on both pedals because they where too tight. The toe clips fit holes in the pedal but the pedal is really skinny and the clips don’t center well on my feet. I don’t have super wide feet either. They are too skinny and cheaply made. Wish I had just bought a more quality pedal instead of purchasing these.MATT

I?ve been using TIME ATAC pedals for a very long time. They are the best pedals to use if you are ever caught in a muddy situation or in a frozen mess. Good pedals for the rider who wants their pedals to work without thinking about them. They are a bit heavier than equally priced Shimano/SPD but they won't fight you in mud/rain and take repeated rock bashes and pedal strikes without fuss. The extra float is easy on the knees and there are 4 adjustable spring tension settings to tighten up the release force or account for worn cleats over time. If they were lighter they would be hands down the best MTB pedal.Bradley

I love the large pedal service and decent weight. Shimano just is not the reliable brand it onces was. I have play in the pedal in less than a month so I will have to open it up and adjust it. The seals are garbage so once you open it the end is nigh. Also I don't know what happened with their cleats but they used to be good for a year or more. Super quality product. It's heavy, much heavier than my original pedals. I can't imagine that my speed increases with such heavier pedals. Originally, I thought a heavy-weighted pedals will lower my speed, but it turns out to be the opposite. A heavier pedals are harder to propel at first, but easier to maintain rolling momentum for keeping high speed more easily. It's out of my expectation.Edward

If youve just bought a new bike the chances are the pedals supplied with it will be ugly cheap plastic ones and youll most likely want to replace them. Thats what I did with my new Specialized Hybrid bike anyway and I opted for these Shimano ones. As their name suggests, they are really intended for modern MTBs which means Id say theyre slightly bigger than average-sized pedals designed perhaps for ordinary everyday commuting for example, and they have a much larger platform. These pedals are perhaps a bit heavier therefore than your average pedals but appear to be fairly solidly made and come with good smooth bearings. I bought mine with a discount so they were priced reasonably ok. Above that price though, I wouldnt say they represent particularly good value for money, and I would be inclined to look at other brands, such as DMR if I were looking to buy some more pedals. I'm not sure what material the screws that come with these pedals are actually made from – I assumed they were Stainless Steel – however, after only a few rides in the rain, I notice that the heads on some of the screws appear to be showing what looks like rust; so I'm not sure whether overall I would say these pedals are a particularly good product.bullneck_123

After 20 years on speedplay frogs, I was doing more casual riding and wanted something I could use around town with any shoes. Nothing negative to say about these as they have served the purpose well for the last year. They are a lot heavier and a lot larger but that was expected and I was prepared to deal with it. It was a little weird at first adjusting to not being clipped in but that went a way after a couple of rides and I feel very secure with the grip for my casual use.schralp

….these pedals are non slip and stable underfoot. The light function is varied and there is now no excuse for drivers to claim they cant see the cyclist with these beauties. Great for commuter bikes and riding around town with lots of traffic.SSSS

This is a high quality set of pedals! Surprisingly large pedals with a very good grip. Weight wise this set is comparable with aluminum mtb flat pedals. The lights are bright as other reviews stated. Also it comes with 2 charging USB cables. Each cable charges one pair of lights, so it is possible to charge all 4 lights simultaneously, which is a great plus. Will see how long the battery lasts.Max

The Look Geo Grip city are much larger than you expect when you just see the pictures. With usual shoes you have a good grip, lighting is VERY bright. I would buy them again.Marc
