We originally got the road bike (look) pedals but they are infuriating to use when you have any stop/go (e.g. riding through town). I decided to go back to SPD and wanted a pedal that flips over with some grip for riding through congested areas that is compatible with my gravel and spin bikes (hence the SPD). These are less than a pound and fit my road bike needs! I was able to add a SPD adapter to my road shoes but probably will use my MTB shoes the most – we usually stop for a beer when possible – this makes it so l I can actually walk around. So far so good. At least 10 rides shared among me and my wife; she uses flat side, I clip in; using them for our Peloton bike. I've tightened the release from the box, but still may need a touch more. Haven't come completely out but do notice when standing there's a little float. Contact points good though. I picked up these pedals as I wanted to be able to clip in when out for rides, but also wanted to be able to wear regular shoes when out with my kids. The pedals are certainly heavier when compared to my spd-sl pedals. My only gripe about the pedals is that when using the spd side, even with the tension tightened all the way, they don’t lock in overly tight. I used them on a 150km ride this last weekend and I didn’t feel as secured as when I used my older plain spd pedals. A slightly cheaper version of the XT pedals I have been using for the last 20 years. The design is faultless- they work in all conditions – and keep on working! They are virtually maintenance free- just clean the clip in area with a brush and water to remove dirt and grit after each ride – bearings can be regreased – but this shouldn’t need doing often unless you jet wash the seals and force water in . The tension can be set to release the foot with just a slight lateral twist – which means putting the foot down in an emergency is quick and saves falling off. My first time for using clipless, and I wish I’d done it ages ago instead of being terrified! Using them on my road bike with shoes that have the option of SPD or SPD SL cleat fittings. I was so worried, but practised round the block for about 15 minutes about 8pm the night I got them, then did a 30 mile ride with them the next day. I think I’ve set the tension about halfway but feel they could be tighter as they’re amazingly easy to clip out of. I actually found it a bit more tricky to clip in, but practised during my ride and it got easier. They seem sturdy and look pretty smooth. I’m sure some would say they’re too weighty, but I’m just thrilled I can use them with much more confidence than I ever thought I’d have! 10/10 from me _x0001F44D__x0001F3FC__x0001F44D__x0001F3FC_
I had never clipped in prior to purchasing these pedals and once I got them installed by my bike tech and took a little lesson on the trainer I was off on the road with no problem. Very easy to learn and very easy to clip in and out. But even though they release easily I have not found that they release on accident. TL;DR: These are "Light Action;" if you want standard dual-sided SPDs, go for PD-ME700. Shimano updated their pedal line this year, and old standbys like the Deore-level M530 SPD have been redesigned and renamed. Visually the non-series PD-ED500 are close enough that I thought they were the heir to the M530, but in reality they feel a lot different. The Shimano product page notes that these are "Light Action SPD," which "Aids Frequent Entry and Release." The latter makes it into the REI product description, but not the former, which is too bad because "Light Action SPD" is actually distinct from the standard SPD I'm used to. Unlike the float of standard SPD pedals, where you have a few degrees of lateral "free wiggle" before the cleat starts to disengage, with Light Action your foot starts to pry the claw open at the slightest lateral movement. It's not unlike the feel of a CrankBros pedal – not a compliment. It's *very* easy to unclip. I only used these for a few trainer sessions and found myself frequently unclipping until I jacked up the claw retention to near max, when they became tolerable. However I still felt that using them on the trail, or even on a hard road/gravel effort, would result in a lot of accidental and inopportune unclipping, so I'll be returning them. Turns out that the GRX-level PD-ME700 (also sold by REI) is the true replacement for the M530 – a dual-sided trail SPD for under $100. I've already purchased the GRX pedals and can confirm they offer the familiar retention and float-feel of standard SPD. All that said, are these a bad product? By objective measures, no. The construction is robust, the bearings are smooth, and adjustment is easy. They're consistent with the quality of other Shimano pedals I've used, which have a reputation for being virtually unkillable. For their defined use-case, which is "road touring and commuting" with "frequent entry and release," I suppose the easy disengagement could be attractive to some. But for pedals that look almost identical to the M530, that are designated as SPD, I think the product description needs to be updated to identify that these pedals use a distinct Light Action mechanism with a different feel. I switched from Shimano XT SPD pedals which kept creaking with almost every pedal stroke. unless the cleat or clip-in mechanism was greased. I use these on the road. They do provide a nice wider contact platform and minimal to no creaks. Solid clip-in. just like Shimano. Lightweight!! Very cheap in red compared to black. I don't mind – can't see when I am on the bike, nobody else to admire them in Covid times and they match the orange, grey, black and yellow highlights elsewhere on my bike. I am using Shimano SPD cleats (rather than the supplied Look ones) which seem fine. They are on my road bike and I have done 3 x 100k rides and a number of 50k rides on them and so far they are comfortable, secure and solid. Replaced Shimano M530s with these as I wondered if Looks offer a better pedalling platform. Maybe its an illusion but I think the Looks are marginally better than the M530s. Useful for a bike that is sometimes just ridden to the shops/pub but also on longer rides, when you might want to wear cleated shoes. Bearings wear very fast and can be sloppy within six months on a bike used for commuting. A special tool (TL-PD33) costing as much as the pedals is needed to service them, since they are designed so that the bearing cone is unreachable with a normal spanner. They are not as well sealed as other SPDs, and use a simple rubber ring around the axle which soon perishes; replacements are 2 each but you can put a stack of O-rings on there instead, which will last longer. If you're happy to throw them away every year and buy a new set OR buy the expensive tool, these are ok. They are nowhere near as good value, or as well made, as the normal SPD pedals like M520, which are cheaper, easily serviceable and better sealed. But if you want to wear flat shoes sometimes, these might be your best option.rogerzilla
These pedals allow you to either use plain shoes or shoes with spd cleats. The metal used in their construction is robust and a pair on my touring bike have done about 10,000km with the only issue being that the bearing now need a service which requires a special Shimano tool to tighten the lock nut for race/shaft. Cleats and a multi-language instructions were included with the pedals. There is a provision on the pedal for click in reflectors which are not included in the package. You will have to find you own source for reflectors. I used 4 from unused basic pedals. Remember to use some grease on the pedal thread when attaching them to the cranks so that the parts do not corrode together.Iain M.
These pedals went on a hardtail that I tend to grab for more casual cruise-around-the-neighborhood use. So I can go for a quick spin without needing my normal SPD shoes. That makes these pedals a winner for convenience. I also want to use this same bike on more "serious" trails so having the SPD clips makes them fully functional for longer rides. The pedals normally rest with the SPD side facing up so clipping in usually works on the first try without toe-flipping the pedal. I ride normal 2-sided SPD pedals on all my other bikes and those are far easier to clip in to as you never have to care about what side it up. The bearings run smooth and SPD lock/release are as consistent as with all my other Shimano pedals. Despite the minor inconvenience of needing the occasionally reorient the pedal to get the correct side up I really enjoy the convenience of not having to swap pedals. 2-in-1 devices are always a compromise but this one's are worth it.Jeff

With shimano recently updating its venerable xtr group, the xtr pd-m9100 pedals get a redesign as well, providing more stability, and the ability to shed mud better than ever before, along with 2 spindle length options. these improvements are the result of a refined pedal body shape that offers a wider edge-to-edge contact area over the outgoing 9000 pedals for an increased shoe to pedal interface and thus, better power transmission. it also features rounded edges to help shed mud and prevent accumulation. the retention mechanism is basically the same as the benchmark spd pedals that's been around for decades with wide, open-ended tabs that allow easy entry and security when clipped in. the open design allows muck to flow through, so it doesn't hamper your ability to engage in a hurry and you can get back in quickly after an impromptu hike-a-bike or remounting after a sandy 'cross pit. the larger flat platforms on the inboard and outboard edges are also a boon to gravel riders looking to keep the sole of your shoe solid on the pedal, as are the two spindle lengths (52 and 55mm) to dial in your fit. the xtr pd-m9100 pedals come with sm-sh51 (single release) cleats and are also compatible with sm-sh56 (multi-release) cleats. they have chromoly spindles and spin on sealed bearings. the tension of the retention mechanism can be adjusted via a hex screw on the back of each pedal on both sides.

Bought for CX. Not much different in weight from standard Shimano MTB SPDs. look nicer and hopefully better bearings – time will tell. Although they are a bit pricey, there are a lot of great reviews for this model. However, I decided to go for these for 3 reasons: (Reason 1:) The stack height of these pedals is lower than on other SPD models. For example, on a 172mm crank arm at the 6 o'clock position, this means there is more ground clearance. At all positions, you are also closer to generating the genuine even spinning torque of a 172mm crank arm. Taller pedal stack heights will effectively give you a shorter crank arm length at the 6 o'clock position, and higher crank arm length at 12 o'clock. (Reason 2:) Pedal weight. My bike is heavy, and I am not a gram weight watcher, but any part of the bike that is spinning will be more efficient if it is lighter. I like to bike long distances and up hills with my heavy bike under load, and need all the help I can get. (Reason 3:) Safety. Though I am careful when walking my bike and have a high degree of self regard, my shins still get banged and cut by the aggressive grip or edges of regular pedals. The spindle length of these pedals is much shorter than non-clip pedals and all surfaces are rounded. Less shin whacks and bloody avulsions. I am happier. For me, given these advantages – especially safety, I was willing to pay the price.Flaco
The only reason that I bought such an expensive pedal was for the tiny bit of extra clearance since I was converting a 700c bike to 650b. I was disappointed to see that after the first ride the seals were popping out. Seems to be an issue with the XTR line of pedals. I pushed it back into place, but they pushed right out again after a short time. The 8100 XTs apparently do not have this issue. I should have stuck with the bombproof M520s or M540s which can be had for 1/4 or 1/2 the price respectively.MSids

Having ridden several other composite pedals, I do prefer these mainly for the lack of a pin in the central area, because some other similar pedals do not feel as natural. The size is also perfect. My wife and I like to cycle and travel in Europe, and try and carry on exclusively. We rent bikes for trips up to two weeks to tour around. I have bad knees, and being clipped in really helps my knees to be able to pull up on pedals to take the pressure off. These pedals are much lighter than a standard pedal, which is magic for carry on weigjt, and allows you to use a small tool Allen key in our mini tool instead of having to bring a pedal wrench to switch, which also saves weight. Most bike shops are great at taking pedals on and off if you arrange in advance, but some want your pedals off before returning bikes, which is fine if you have time, but not if you have a time constrant.. like a train and plane hom. Pros: Like, clips in well, adjustable tention and comes witih extra SPD cleats for value. Cons; The back side of the pedal is really not useful for riding unclipped for any distance. Mounted on my gravel bike and has logged some 12000 km maybe so far. Takes a bit of getting used to as the pedal often seems to want to flip upside down when getting going (hence the advantage of the classic double sided mountain bike ones – which would also be preferred for rougher single track etc, though these aren't too bad). Little bit of rusting around where the cleat snaps in but not concerning. Backside of pedal is scraped off from getting rolling before clipping in. Both cosmetic so not a big deal but may be for some. Worth the price? After trying out some Candy 1 pedals, I realized that I wanted 1) a larger platform to facilitate standing starts at stoplights, and 2) the ability to adjust my clip-out effort. These Shimano PD-M8120 pedals are absolutely fantastic for my needs and work great with both SH-51 and SH-56 cleats. Not only does the platform work well at stoplights, it's also allows quick trips with sandals or whatever else you might be wearing. This is one of the most versatile pedals I've tried.

I love the large pedal service and decent weight. Shimano just is not the reliable brand it onces was. I have play in the pedal in less than a month so I will have to open it up and adjust it. The seals are garbage so once you open it the end is nigh. Also I don't know what happened with their cleats but they used to be good for a year or more. Never felt the need to buy/install the lighter Shimano XT model before, but these were fitted to a light bike. Very simple to install and easy to adjust the tension. If you are new to cleats/pedals I would recommend slacking off all 4 adjusters and maybe apply a little light tension (2 clicks on the adjuster). Clipping in and out is simple. Not sure the price is fully justified when compared to slightly heavier and cheaper models; "horses for course" Look great. Highly recommended.

Ok, so fit and float on clips is a matter of personal preference. These work for me, but it's really just what you like and what you're used to. That said, I love these because there's no "wrong way up". Just smack 'em in the right spot and you're ready to go. One less thing to think about. This is my second pair. The bearings finally died on the first pair after 5000 miles of road cycling in the hills and mountains around Seattle. I'm not a particularly light guy, and I ride hard. They've bee scraped up, ground into the pavement, and given plenty of tough love. The surround protects the business end of the clips and, quite frankly, just looks good. It also provide a bit of a platform if you you're sitting at a green light, missed the clip, and need to get a few pedal strokes in *now*. It's not enough of a platform to ride comfortably on much longer than that (the egg beater sticks up above it a little), but it helps. So 5000 miles seems like a fine service life for what I put these through, and I'm looking forward to the next 5K.Ben K
I have been using this model over 10 years. Original purhase was to replace my $400 Ti spindle Candy pedal on 2009 and decided to give this model a try for the low weight and very low price. No performance or feel difference between Candy 1’s and 11’s. I have them on 6 bikes(cross, mtb, commuter, fat bike). On a few occasions when I went to buy replacement cleats, I just bought new Candy 1’s as the price delta was only $35 more and I got a new set of pedals at the same time. No issues in mud or wet snow and I never have issues during wet muddy cross season. My oldest pair is 9 years old, on my commuter bike and I just disassemble once a year and re-grease(it takes five minutes with one screw driver and one socket wrench). They also work well with the shoes shields if you have carbon sole shoes. You will not be disappointed.Dave
Been on Egg Beaters for some 15+ yrs now. They are on my dual suspension cross country Santa Cruz Tall Boy and my 4 season Surly crosscheck commuter. They are great for 2 bolt type cleats. Four sided entry great for frequent entry/exit like cyclocross or commuting. Fair amount of float. I do note more shoe/pedal rub with these than some others, which is mildly aggravating when commuting, not noticeable on my Santa Cruz Tall Boy. Like most two bolt cleats, more risk of a hot spot along the sole when compared to road cleat (3 bolt) systems, but 3 bolt cleats dont work on trail or if any walking needed. Compared to spd, I like the forward or reverse entry and 4 sided vs 2 sided. I put about 500 miles a month commuting on these.Matthew T

We originally got the road bike (look) pedals but they are infuriating to use when you have any stop/go (e.g. riding through town). I decided to go back to SPD and wanted a pedal that flips over with some grip for riding through congested areas that is compatible with my gravel and spin bikes (hence the SPD). These are less than a pound and fit my road bike needs! I was able to add a SPD adapter to my road shoes but probably will use my MTB shoes the most – we usually stop for a beer when possible – this makes it so l I can actually walk around. So far so good. At least 10 rides shared among me and my wife; she uses flat side, I clip in; using them for our Peloton bike. I've tightened the release from the box, but still may need a touch more. Haven't come completely out but do notice when standing there's a little float. Contact points good though. I picked up these pedals as I wanted to be able to clip in when out for rides, but also wanted to be able to wear regular shoes when out with my kids. The pedals are certainly heavier when compared to my spd-sl pedals. My only gripe about the pedals is that when using the spd side, even with the tension tightened all the way, they don’t lock in overly tight. I used them on a 150km ride this last weekend and I didn’t feel as secured as when I used my older plain spd pedals. For mixed use though, I think these pedals are worth it especially if you’re looking for a pedal where you can ride with normal shoes when out for a leisurely ride or going to the pub, etc.David

I was new to clipless pedals when I got back into cycling last year. I got these ones primarily because they were relatively inexpensive. Overall, they are great for road cycling (I averaged ~80 miles a weeks over the season with 2-4 rides) and found that these pedals were super easy. The adjustable tension works great and makes for easy in and out. Since I wasn't racing the tighter tension settings were not necessary for my use. Held my feet in place well as I don't think I slipped out once all year. Weight didn't really matter to me since I was just cycling to get in shape and pass the time.Tall One
Easy to clip in and out. Nearly maintenance free. Very durable too. Depending on which cleats you use, you can get as much or as little float as you like. I prefer the yellow cleats that come with the pedals as I get 6 degrees of motion and my knees don't hurt after a long ride. The only drawback I have is that they are only one-sided pedals.Brian D

Useful for a bike that is sometimes just ridden to the shops/pub but also on longer rides, when you might want to wear cleated shoes. Bearings wear very fast and can be sloppy within six months on a bike used for commuting. A special tool (TL-PD33) costing as much as the pedals is needed to service them, since they are designed so that the bearing cone is unreachable with a normal spanner. They are not as well sealed as other SPDs, and use a simple rubber ring around the axle which soon perishes; replacements are 2 each but you can put a stack of O-rings on there instead, which will last longer. If you're happy to throw them away every year and buy a new set OR buy the expensive tool, these are ok. They are nowhere near as good value, or as well made, as the normal SPD pedals like M520, which are cheaper, easily serviceable and better sealed. But if you want to wear flat shoes sometimes, these might be your best option.rogerzilla
These pedals allow you to either use plain shoes or shoes with spd cleats. The metal used in their construction is robust and a pair on my touring bike have done about 10,000km with the only issue being that the bearing now need a service which requires a special Shimano tool to tighten the lock nut for race/shaft. Cleats and a multi-language instructions were included with the pedals. There is a provision on the pedal for click in reflectors which are not included in the package. You will have to find you own source for reflectors. I used 4 from unused basic pedals. Remember to use some grease on the pedal thread when attaching them to the cranks so that the parts do not corrode together.Iain M.
These pedals went on a hardtail that I tend to grab for more casual cruise-around-the-neighborhood use. So I can go for a quick spin without needing my normal SPD shoes. That makes these pedals a winner for convenience. I also want to use this same bike on more "serious" trails so having the SPD clips makes them fully functional for longer rides. The pedals normally rest with the SPD side facing up so clipping in usually works on the first try without toe-flipping the pedal. I ride normal 2-sided SPD pedals on all my other bikes and those are far easier to clip in to as you never have to care about what side it up. The bearings run smooth and SPD lock/release are as consistent as with all my other Shimano pedals. Despite the minor inconvenience of needing the occasionally reorient the pedal to get the correct side up I really enjoy the convenience of not having to swap pedals. 2-in-1 devices are always a compromise but this one's are worth it.Jeff
