They are virtually maintenance free- just clean the clip in area with a brush and water to remove dirt and grit after each ride – bearings can be regreased – but this shouldn’t need doing often unless you jet wash the seals and force water in . These pedals are a great value.They are light, made very well and position for clip-in very well. I am a regular road rider but I do not race. The price is right. I ordered them after having a bit of trouble clipping into a new set of Look Keo 2 Max pedals. I've been riding clip in's since the 90s, mainly Look. However the new Key 2s had a small "lip" at the front edge that always seemed to snag my shoes/cleats. I looked carefully at the Shimano PD-R-7000s and the lip seemed smaller. It was and now the problems getting in from a standing start are nearly eliminated. The one thing that is a bit of a problem is the axle length. I wish the offset between the pedal and edge of the crank was a bit longer. I am getting used to the closeness but it is just an adjustment problem on my part. A slightly longer axle can be ordered but it increases the price. I highly recommend these pedals for training and touring on the road, including with climbs.reggmc2012
These will be going on my new bike, when it finally arrives. When I bought them, Sigma were offering the best price for them. The pedals are quite solid, but not actually heavy, thanks to the pedal platform being carbon. The tension adjuster is clearly readily accessible and the indicator is clear to see. They are a bit heavier than equally priced Shimano/SPD but they won't fight you in mud/rain and take repeated rock bashes and pedal strikes without fuss. The extra float is easy on the knees and there are 4 adjustable spring tension settings to tighten up the release force or account for worn cleats over time. I use the shorter pins and have no issues. Typical high quality from Shimano, these pedals are perfect for any bike that you might choose to ride with or without cleated shoes. I have them on my gravel bike, which I would normally ride clipped in, but occasionally I take a more casual ride with my wife around the neighborhood. They spin freely, and hang just right so that you can find the clip-in side without looking. With the included cleats they provide plenty of float, which I prefer. And there's even an extra set of the grub screws in the box (which provide extra grip on the 'flat' side) for when they wear out. The reflectors are removable if you choose to do so. I didn't, they don't look that dorky. The only negative (really a very minor annoyance, easily remedied), is that they come coated in a sticky grease, which I tried to wipe off thoroughly to prevent dirt and sand sticking to them.roderic_1

After gradually increasing foot problems I realised I needed to invest in a new pedal system with a wide, stable platform. After a lot of online research I decided on Shimano SPD-SL. I already used Shimano SPD pedals on my MTB and Winterhack, so I knew all about the great bearings and overall quality. Early days yet, but with some widefit Shimano shoes and these Ultegra pedals, my feet feel a lot better and I'm now approaching 50:50 power output from both legs. I purchased these pedals to replace my Time Atac Alums for downhill. The Time Atac Alums are great for cross country, but do not provide enough foot support for a long day of downhill. I stuck with Time because they make a quality product and I wanted to use the same cleats/shoes for cross country and downhill. These pedals are great! I'm pretty biased, as I've ridden Time pedals for 20+ years, but the ease of entry, the knee saving "float", and ease of release (with few accidental exits!) have kept me a loyal customer all these years. Hearing about Shimano's quality for years, when the time came to replace my 10 year old Eggbeaters, I decided to give these a try. I have to say, I really like these M 520s. The engagement is pronounced and the additional connection between shoe and my bike is confidence inspiring. The difference in float between Crankbrothers and Shimano took a little while to used to, but having no inward movement towards the crankarm has helped with climbing for sure. The price is nice, too. Been using the Shimano off road pedal on my road bikes for over 20 years now, no problems. The double sided pedal works with all shoes, not just road shoes or off road shoes. With the indentation of the SPD cleat sometimes being used in shoes today to walk without walking on the cleat means some shoes are not compatible with road cleats. both my road shoes and off road shoes fit this two sided off road pedal. Bearing wear is slight, probably 25,000 miles before signs of wear. Two sided is faster to clip into, and you have a backup if one side fails….but never has yet.Marathon Martin

Ok, so fit and float on clips is a matter of personal preference. These work for me, but it's really just what you like and what you're used to. That said, I love these because there's no "wrong way up". Just smack 'em in the right spot and you're ready to go. One less thing to think about. This is my second pair. The bearings finally died on the first pair after 5000 miles of road cycling in the hills and mountains around Seattle. I'm not a particularly light guy, and I ride hard. They've bee scraped up, ground into the pavement, and given plenty of tough love. The surround protects the business end of the clips and, quite frankly, just looks good. It also provide a bit of a platform if you you're sitting at a green light, missed the clip, and need to get a few pedal strokes in *now*. It's not enough of a platform to ride comfortably on much longer than that (the egg beater sticks up above it a little), but it helps. So 5000 miles seems like a fine service life for what I put these through, and I'm looking forward to the next 5K.Ben K
I have been using this model over 10 years. Original purhase was to replace my $400 Ti spindle Candy pedal on 2009 and decided to give this model a try for the low weight and very low price. No performance or feel difference between Candy 1’s and 11’s. I have them on 6 bikes(cross, mtb, commuter, fat bike). On a few occasions when I went to buy replacement cleats, I just bought new Candy 1’s as the price delta was only $35 more and I got a new set of pedals at the same time. No issues in mud or wet snow and I never have issues during wet muddy cross season. My oldest pair is 9 years old, on my commuter bike and I just disassemble once a year and re-grease(it takes five minutes with one screw driver and one socket wrench). They also work well with the shoes shields if you have carbon sole shoes. You will not be disappointed.Dave
Been on Egg Beaters for some 15+ yrs now. They are on my dual suspension cross country Santa Cruz Tall Boy and my 4 season Surly crosscheck commuter. They are great for 2 bolt type cleats. Four sided entry great for frequent entry/exit like cyclocross or commuting. Fair amount of float. I do note more shoe/pedal rub with these than some others, which is mildly aggravating when commuting, not noticeable on my Santa Cruz Tall Boy. Like most two bolt cleats, more risk of a hot spot along the sole when compared to road cleat (3 bolt) systems, but 3 bolt cleats dont work on trail or if any walking needed. Compared to spd, I like the forward or reverse entry and 4 sided vs 2 sided. I put about 500 miles a month commuting on these.Matthew T

I decided to go back to SPD and wanted a pedal that flips over with some grip for riding through congested areas that is compatible with my gravel and spin bikes (hence the SPD). These are less than a pound and fit my road bike needs! I was able to add a SPD adapter to my road shoes but probably will use my MTB shoes the most – we usually stop for a beer when possible – this makes it so l I can actually walk around. Love the pedals – exactly what I wanted/needed.Joyce

I've tightened the release from the box, but still may need a touch more. Haven't come completely out but do notice when standing there's a little float. Contact points good though. I picked up these pedals as I wanted to be able to clip in when out for rides, but also wanted to be able to wear regular shoes when out with my kids. The pedals are certainly heavier when compared to my spd-sl pedals. My only gripe about the pedals is that when using the spd side, even with the tension tightened all the way, they don’t lock in overly tight. I used them on a 150km ride this last weekend and I didn’t feel as secured as when I used my older plain spd pedals. For mixed use though, I think these pedals are worth it especially if you’re looking for a pedal where you can ride with normal shoes when out for a leisurely ride or going to the pub, etc.David

Useful for a bike that is sometimes just ridden to the shops/pub but also on longer rides, when you might want to wear cleated shoes. Bearings wear very fast and can be sloppy within six months on a bike used for commuting. A special tool (TL-PD33) costing as much as the pedals is needed to service them, since they are designed so that the bearing cone is unreachable with a normal spanner. They are not as well sealed as other SPDs, and use a simple rubber ring around the axle which soon perishes; replacements are 2 each but you can put a stack of O-rings on there instead, which will last longer. If you're happy to throw them away every year and buy a new set OR buy the expensive tool, these are ok. They are nowhere near as good value, or as well made, as the normal SPD pedals like M520, which are cheaper, easily serviceable and better sealed. But if you want to wear flat shoes sometimes, these might be your best option.rogerzilla
These pedals allow you to either use plain shoes or shoes with spd cleats. The metal used in their construction is robust and a pair on my touring bike have done about 10,000km with the only issue being that the bearing now need a service which requires a special Shimano tool to tighten the lock nut for race/shaft. Cleats and a multi-language instructions were included with the pedals. There is a provision on the pedal for click in reflectors which are not included in the package. You will have to find you own source for reflectors. I used 4 from unused basic pedals. Remember to use some grease on the pedal thread when attaching them to the cranks so that the parts do not corrode together.Iain M.
These pedals went on a hardtail that I tend to grab for more casual cruise-around-the-neighborhood use. So I can go for a quick spin without needing my normal SPD shoes. That makes these pedals a winner for convenience. I also want to use this same bike on more "serious" trails so having the SPD clips makes them fully functional for longer rides. The pedals normally rest with the SPD side facing up so clipping in usually works on the first try without toe-flipping the pedal. I ride normal 2-sided SPD pedals on all my other bikes and those are far easier to clip in to as you never have to care about what side it up. The bearings run smooth and SPD lock/release are as consistent as with all my other Shimano pedals. Despite the minor inconvenience of needing the occasionally reorient the pedal to get the correct side up I really enjoy the convenience of not having to swap pedals. 2-in-1 devices are always a compromise but this one's are worth it.Jeff

Only ridden a couple of times on my new Spank Oozy Reboots so far as it is winter in Vermont right now, although we are getting our share of warm days. My assessment so far is these thing have some serious grip and my foot feels solidly planted! I can’t seem to reconcile oozy with something so grippy.
I love these pedals but if you purchase be aware of the following: The studs require a thread locker such as blue Loc-tite. I didn't put any locker on mine and lost 5 studs the first ride. While it's possible that I didn't torque those studs as much as the others, I tend to feel that either the studs should come pre-installed or the pedals should come with thread locker. If you lose studs you'll have a difficult time finding something from the hardware store. I did some scouting around and found the most suitable replacement to be 8 or 10mm set screws (M4x0.7). I chose not to go this route because I'd rather have original hardware. Even with 5 missing studs (on one pedal) I still have great grip and feel confident using them. Lastly, these pedals come with washers. While I'm happy I didn't have to purchase washers, I'd prefer that the pedals fit without washers since I remove my pedals regularly to fit my bike into my car. I'm just waiting to lose one. I absolutely love the small footprint of these pedals and the ease of use compared to there competitors. However, please either make a special tool for adjusting your float screws or do a much better job with the current srew holes. I have brand new cleats that I bought a few months ago and now that I've put them on a pair of shoes I can't adjust the screws! This is very frustrating and a waste of my time. Now I have to wait until Tuesday drive 30 minutes to my LBS and hope that they can help me. If not I'm literally screwed because it's been over 90 days since I purchased them and I can't return them!😢Dennis Cooper

Super quality product. It's heavy, much heavier than my original pedals. I can't imagine that my speed increases with such heavier pedals. Originally, I thought a heavy-weighted pedals will lower my speed, but it turns out to be the opposite. A heavier pedals are harder to propel at first, but easier to maintain rolling momentum for keeping high speed more easily. It's out of my expectation.Edward
If youve just bought a new bike the chances are the pedals supplied with it will be ugly cheap plastic ones and youll most likely want to replace them. Thats what I did with my new Specialized Hybrid bike anyway and I opted for these Shimano ones. As their name suggests, they are really intended for modern MTBs which means Id say theyre slightly bigger than average-sized pedals designed perhaps for ordinary everyday commuting for example, and they have a much larger platform. These pedals are perhaps a bit heavier therefore than your average pedals but appear to be fairly solidly made and come with good smooth bearings. I bought mine with a discount so they were priced reasonably ok. Above that price though, I wouldnt say they represent particularly good value for money, and I would be inclined to look at other brands, such as DMR if I were looking to buy some more pedals. I'm not sure what material the screws that come with these pedals are actually made from – I assumed they were Stainless Steel – however, after only a few rides in the rain, I notice that the heads on some of the screws appear to be showing what looks like rust; so I'm not sure whether overall I would say these pedals are a particularly good product.bullneck_123
After 20 years on speedplay frogs, I was doing more casual riding and wanted something I could use around town with any shoes. Nothing negative to say about these as they have served the purpose well for the last year. They are a lot heavier and a lot larger but that was expected and I was prepared to deal with it. It was a little weird at first adjusting to not being clipped in but that went a way after a couple of rides and I feel very secure with the grip for my casual use.schralp

Pedals are great. more clearance than time ATAC, a few less pedal strikes. It clips in easily, an issue I've have with other pedals. Can't say if it really provides more pedal surface. the actual pedal body is above the platform. Haven't noticed such a difference in this regard compared to pedals without any platform. The main difference will be rocks strikes to an exposed spring such as on the Race version, disengaging the spring retention while clipped in. This is according to a shimano rep for NE. After going through 4 pairs of the M9100 Race model, I received this M9120 last week. So far 5 out of 5 pairs of these XTR pedals have the same issue: the black rubber seal on each pedal coming out after one ride. REI has been good with sending replacement pedals each time, but it is frustrating to have this issue with these pedals. XTR should be good quality.Fabien
CAUTION! Read all the reviews before you buy I bought these because I needed new pedals coming off of SPD 747s. I read all the review about the seals failing. Some of the reviewers said they didn't have issues. I figured it's 2021 and Shimano should have addressed this. THEY DID NOT. On my first ride, the seals failed. Totally unacceptable for a $200 pedal. If buying Shimano pedals, go for the XT, not XTR. Looks – 5 stars Weight – 3 stars * my old 747s with Ti axles weigh 163g each compared to these at 197g each. Love my new Spank Spoon 100's. I got them for bikepacking and touring so I would only have to bring one pair of flat biking shoes for my long distance trips. Grip is great, platform is comfortable, and I wanted a pedal that wasn't huge and heavy. The 100's give sufficient platform for my size 9's, but won't get in the way during hike-a-biking moments. I also like that I can switch to the smaller pin set if I want. No complaints at all. Can't wait to try them out on my upcoming 1000 mile trip!Hope M.
