20 Best Permanent Blue Hair Dye For Dark Hair (Jan 2023 Update)

Box Dye is usually a hit or miss for me, but this dye honestly is one of the better ones I’ve tried. The dye itself did not smell bad and the steps were simple enough for anyone.to understand. It didn’t stain which is a huge bonus. It didn’t completely color my hair evenly, but that’s more due to my hair already being different shades/colors. The color turned out more vibant than I expected. A week later, the color has faded a little but that’s usually what happens to me with hair dyes. However, The color still looks pretty (especially in the sun). I will consider this brand in the future when dyeing my hair. Do I recommend? Yes. Some box dyes hate my hair but if this works well on my hair, there’s a good chance it will work well on yours too. I’ve dyed my hair at least a dozen times, but it’s been a while. I used Féria’s Coral Pink in March without issue, so I thought blue hair sounded fun and picked up Féria’s M10 Cosmic Azure. I’m not going to knock off any stars for the dye being more dark blueberry on my hair, rather than the more purple blue on the box, because I had previous dye on my hair. But I will dock it all the points for the terrible formula. It came with a scent ampoule, but that didn’t help. The dye made my eyes water profusely and my husband even commented on it. The dye dripped everywhere in my shower. I was able to clean the tile with bleach and CLR Mold and Mildew, but some of the grout is still blue. While it was incredibly drippy, it didn’t penetrate hair well at all. I used almost the entire bottle of dye, rubbing it into my hair for 10-15 minutes, then waited another 10-15 while I cleaned blue hair dye out of the shower, and I still have areas where my hair is still brown/coral pink. I would repeatedly work the dye into my hair and could see it wasn’t penetrating like you’d expect the dye formula to do. I do NOT recommend this dye and am now thinking about a nice, boring dark brown next, maybe not from Féria’s line.dia.s

I’ve been using this brand’s dye starting from their R48 to V38 (this dye) and it’s been maybe a year or so? When I used the R48 color it was more red and that was the first time trying out a maroonish-plum color and I immediately became addicted. It lasted a good few months and would’ve lasted probably more if I didn’t get impatient and dye it again lmao my hair dye addiction got out of hand. I’ll say the more often you dye your hair a red-purple color the faster it’ll wash out. I know nothing is permanent but for me this washed out a bit faster than I imagined for a permanent hair dye. That’s okay tho because I dye my hair rather often and it’s fun. When I dye my hair with this dye it fades into an auburn, reddish orange color and my natural hair is dark brown. You may have to retouch up your roots once every month and a half or so because that’s the fastest thing to wash out. When dying your hair with this it smells super strong like chemicals and can make your nose and even your eyes burn if the fumes get too close to your face? And it takes a while to wash out but the shampoo smells super good that it comes with and the color always comes out nice and vibrant. 🙂 I’ll be buying it again probably since it’s sold in all stores near me but if I used another brand like arctic fox or something I’m sure I could get similar results.wee

Smells amazing and is easy to apply. Unfortunately that's where the good in my review ends. I bought the Magic Salem and pastel Iris colors and honestly? I wasn't impressed. They don't last (pastel Iris has only lasted one wash, Magic Salem – which was quoted to last 3 weeks – only lasted 3.) Not to mention, Magic Salem is their purple, but it came out blue rather than purple. And to make matters worse, the dyes faded super poorly? It looked awful.

I love Lunar Tides. The salon I go to for my highlights use this product. I also purchase this as a consumer for at home use in between salon visits. The dyes are super vibrant. A big plus is that Lunar Tides are vegan and cruelty free. I like mixing colors to make different shades. These are semi-permanent so they will wash out. I recommend washing your hair with cold water and use Watercolor Shampoo for whatever color your hair is. I bought 4 dyes from Lunar Tides: Juniper Green, Aurora Green, Pastel Iris, and their toner. the toner worked great, I loved it! however the dyes are absolutely terrible. I read so many reviews before buying from them and the only “bad” thing I could find was that it was runny and messy. the hair dye I received is almost a gel consistency, not runny at all. my hair was platinum blonde before I dyed it with juniper green. it is very dark in the container, but bright green on the hair; this was my first red flag. I kept hoping it would be darker when I washed it out but obviously it was lighter. my hair was joker green. I figured this was my fault for toning my hair and thought maybe that could be the issue. however, I also dyed part of my hair with the Pastel Iris. in the container, it looks like a darker purple (the shade you think of when I say purple) so I assumed it would be darker than I expected; it was not. it went on the hair very light, looked very similar to the toner. after I rinsed it out (with cold water as you should) the color was BARELY there. it looked like I left toner on for a little too long. again, I figured this was my fault for ordering a pastel dye. HOWEVER, I just washed my hair for the first time since dying it (it has been exactly ONE week) and the color is completely gone. the part that was dyed purple has absolutely no color in it. this was after ONE WASH. there is absolutely no reason for my hair to be blonde right now. I had to purchase a completely different dye to cover up the horrid snot green and now I have to re-dye the part that is purple EVERY TIME I want to wash my hair??? an absolute waste of money and time. should not be sold as semi-permanentzoe hintze

The ammonia smell hits you when you first squeeze the colour out, but it mixes nicely with the Schwarzkopf dedicated developer. It’s smooth and has opaque coverage. 100% grey coverage when mixed with natural, large colour selection. I use it for certain clients but not everyone.gina.s

If a hair dye could be said to be a soul-mate… I have found my soul-mate! For years, I have used those direct deposit "fun" colour type dyes on part of my hair. Some brands are better than others, of course, but they always faded out too fast for me, or left me with stains everywhere (and not just from wet hair… but while dry… pink sheets, pink fingernails – from merely running my fingers through my dry hair!), so there was always some sort of drawback with them. I have naturally porous hair, so I never needed to pre-bleach in order to get coverage (luckily, I also never aimed for a pastel, either) despite having around a 6 or 7 level hair and auburn/ginger in colour (the orange in my hair did mean that the end colour was not true to the intended colour, though). I did pre-bleach for this colour, but only to remove the last bits of a deposit dye and because I was unsure about the coverage of this dye. I shouldn't have worried. Not only did it take wonderfully to the bleached hair (and softened it back up to near-undamaged, as my hair did not like being bleached at all), but it also covered some of the unbleached hair that I accidentally included in the dye coverage, some of which also still had direct dye still staining it. You cannot tell the difference between bleached, unbleached, and any remaining direct dye stained areas (some bleached parts still had it too). It's all covered, and looks the same, but without looking flat… it has dimension to it, like hair should have. So, it doesn't look like a flat matte lifeless solid wig of pinkish hair… it just looks like… (fuchsia/plum) hair! 🙂 Now, although this colour is a level 9, so you would think it is a light colour… it is not. The end result (bleached or unbleached) is around a 6 or 7 level (same as my normal level), indoors it does appear slightly darker, too (maybe a 5 or 6 level). This could be due to how porous my hair is, but having seen pictures of others who have used it, I think it just is that dark due to being very pigmented. But! That *is* what I wanted! The colour is glorious! The -98 part of the number system indicates violet red. 9 = violet, 8 = red. So if you are looking at other Igora colours, keep that in mind. An -88 will be a red red, a -99 will be a violet violet, etc. The order does matter, as the first number is dominant, the second is to shift it. So an -89 would be redder, and the -98 is more purple. The end result is a wonderful medium/bright fuchsia/magenta (pink!!) in sunlight, and indoors looks more medium/dark plum/wine. It glows and shines and is sovery soft! Because it doesn't just coat the hair on the outside, it doesn't leave any weight or feeling of having something coating your hair (I don't use styling products, so that's sort of a big deal to me)… and no funky coloured fingernails! And the shine! It isn't just vibrant – it shines! It doesn't leave the hair dull looking at all. My natural virgin healthy hair looks dull in comparison (seriously, I am contemplating actually getting some of this line in a shade to match my own hair colour, just for the shine factor). If you like a deep purple/pink colour, I highly recommend this colour (and if you don't change colours every two weeks or something, that is). If you have naturally darker hair than a level 5 or 6, I don't know what will happen for you (I used a 20 developer, so a 30 may give better results for darker hair), but if you have 6 or lighter, it should come out as a deep berry/wine/plum (the red/pink hue is still present, just muted) indoors and deep bright magenta/fuchsia outdoors. If you want to add a little pizzaz to a brown dye, just to kick it up a notch, I'd also say this would do the trick, if you add just a bit in with your brown dye and developer. The Igora line also offers some "fun fashion" colours, most of which are in the pastel family. I would say this could be added to those to achieve a lighter colour of pink, or to punch any of those up a few notches as well. I do not know about mixing it with any other brand of dye, or what that would do to the end result, so I will not comment on that other than to say "proceed with caution" if you choose to do that. I cannot, as yet, make any claims about the fade factor or how long it will last. But, other reviews of this line say it lasts and lasts with little fading, even the reds. So, I have high hopes, and even if it does fade, I expect it to be slower than any direct dye (and hopefully more evenly). I wish I had used the Igora developer (contains oil), because if it came out this soft and lovely to the touch (over fried bleach hair!) with cheap no-name developer (it's what I had on hand from my daughter)… I can only imagine how much better it would have been with the higher quality stuff. When first applied the grey was much darker than I expected and then washed out pretty quickly so that now after 3 washes I am left with a dark ashen tone, which is fine by me. Due to the fact that my hair hasn't been untreated in, like, 15 years, I am sure the washing out quickly is due to the bad state my hair is in rather then quality of the dye.Corina G.

I picked this colour probably about 6 to 12 months ago. Wasn't sure about it at first. I have dark brown hair naturally. I usually dye it a chestnut colour. So this is a bit different than what I usually dye my hair with. But people have been complimenting how they love the colour my hair, so I kept it this colour since then, and I absolutely love it. It is my favorite colour for my hair. I really hope they don't discontinue this colour, as this will probably be my lifetime hair colour lol….. Although I'm having troubles finding it in stores right now, so it's making me a little worried that is just a limited time. And if that's the case, I don't know what to do for my hair colour. Go back to my chestnut colours. I do recommend this color and product. Love how it feels in my hair. My hair soft and the colour is very vibrant. It lasts long time. I do wash my hair with cool to cold water though. It helps keep the red bright longer. One thing though, it does continue to run every time you wash your hair so when your hair is wet it will stain your towels, or your shirts, or bed, or pillows. But I guess that's part of dying your hair red as it will always have the colour run. Does a great job at covering up the grey hair. Please keep this colour!!SPARKLES

This is the first time I have ever dyed my hair, I’ve had naturally red curly hair all my life but wanted to change it up a bit. I’ve always wanted to dye my hair burgundy so I got shade BR2 passion fruit. I will say it is such a pretty color but it isn’t exactly like the picture on the box. I’m sure that’s to be expected especially since I already have natural red hair. The color turned my red hair into a darker color with purple undertones, there’s definitely a noticeable difference which is what I was looking for. The reason for 3 stars is because this hair dye smells absolutely HORRIBLE. The whole time I was applying it to my hair my eyes were watering as well as my nose burning. It felt like I had inhaled a ton of chemicals, even almost 10 hours later It still feels as if I’d inhaled chemicals. This was my first time dying my hair at home. I have medium brown hair and when longer it has natural highlights. Since I wear it short, the darker colors clash with the gray, so I got this since the box matched my natural color. It definitely covered all gray and was easy to apply (I used bowl and brush instead of squeeze bottle). However, it came out as a copper color highlighting my hair, not simple ash brown. I like the color, though! But it’s just not what was on the box. The other nice thing about this color compared to colors I’ve had at salons is it didn’t irritate my skin at all. I have very sensitive skin, and this didn’t sting or burn, like I’ve had from salons. Also a plus is the after color conditioner. It leaves your hair SOO soft and smooth. I personally think this dye is great, but I can think of another brand that has more staying power and is cheaper, so for that reason I can only give this 4 stars. The tone of this pink is unique to pinks I have bought previously and I think that's great when wanting some dimension! The texture is hard to describe but not its really creamy or gel like. And I think it smells like peppercorn, which doesn't bother me. I find a tube of this goes a really long way too, which is fantastic! The staying power is pretty average for your vivid pinks. Its rare for them to last too long. But I touch mine up every few washes around the roots and let the rest fade to a pastel, so its no big deal.dominique.f

I recently tried this product for the first time and I think it’s now one of my favorites! I’ve gotten TONS of compliments since I used Blue Ruin and I’ve used them all, over the years. Warning: stuff is Pravana Vivids level of stainage. RIP to a couple of ratty old towels, lol. My hair is between a level 2-3 with grays and I bleach and then highlight it to level 7-8. Pro tip is that I mix this product with a little conditioner and Olaplex 3 and then leave it in my hair for 2 hours. It really saves it from being fried. I tried to manage my expectations a little with this product, as it’s recommended for light blonde or pre-lightened hair but mine was a balayage with dark blonde/light brown. Turns out it defied my expectations and still came out as a super vibrant red! My hair is chest length and the tube had just about enough to cover nearly my whole head (my roots are dark so I avoided those) with a small amount of conditioner mixed in to stretch it a bit further. I’m now on wash 3 or 4 and I’m surprised by how much colour is still in my hair! The vibrancy has been toned down but it’s definitely still red and I expect it will be for a while yet.Nicole

I purchased Insert Color Here because my elementary age children wanted to dye their hair. I didn't want to use something that would be permanent or really damaging. One has dirty blonde hair and the other medium brown hair, so I wasn't sure how well it would work. The Amethyst Insert Color Here took to their hair very well. My dirty blonde son ended up with a very bright almost "anime" purple hair. My medium brown son came out with a plum color. Both looked really nice. Their hair after dyeing was soft, and there wasn't any awful odors while dyeing. The color faded quicker from my son's medium brown hair than the dirty blonde, but it still still lasted a month and half. My son's dirty blonde hair first faded into an interesting silver color which he also enjoyed, that lingered until about two-ish months out. Now! As much as I have high praises for this stuff, I also purchased the Ruby and Emerald and my kids want to try those colors. However, we are now 4 months since dyeing their hair and my tub still has a purple hue. Despite scrubbing, allowing super hot water to just sit (which lifted the color more than anything), bleach and other chemicals (not at the same time!). I love having blue hair so I was really excited to get my hands and hair on this. my only downside is that it does turn my natural honey coloured roots near black, and the scent isnt…amazing. (it is a bit chemically, in comparison to the "typical" semiperm colour super sweet smell) BUT the colour is absolutely beautiful and vibrant and multi dimensional! It does fade to a more greenish tint but that's fine with me. i mixed grumpy bear and royal sapphire and I love it! I’ve been wanting to dye my hair red for years but never followed through with it. But, when I came across this product, I thought “why not?”. I had a balayage prior to the pandemic so still had blonde in my hair & applying this color turned out amazing! It looked beautiful in all kinds of lighting too. I received so many compliments! First of all, I want to say I have VERY long and full latin hair. It is up to my lower back and I purchased 2 boxes- but only needed ONE. At first, I didn’t think the foam would work or even make it as it’s a liquid, it makes you skeptical it’s even costing the hair evenly, but you can’t be scared to spread it all around, massage it into your scalp, use a comb if you have to. I think the best part of this dye was the fact that it’s mess free. With the squirt bottle dyes, I always end up getting it on my walls, or floor, or countertop- with this one the foam is so easy to work with. I never really use the gloves provided in the boxes of hair color because they tend to rip at the seams- so use your own gloves. 2N was the color I used and it looks identical to the picture on the box. Just gorgeous. It’s a very dark brown that appears black but not blue black. I’m just in love with it and how soft my hair is after. I will keep buying this one and can’t recommend it enough. This foam hair dye was pretty awful for me. The dye smells good and the foam feel fine but the DRIPS! I had black dye all over my bathroom- so stressful. I did follow the directions and had a towel and carefully covered my bathroom. After using the amount of foam recommended to cover the entirety of your hair, you wait at least 20 minutes. In about 5 minutes the foam started to “melt” and no longer foamy, it dripped everywhere. Although I had a towel my hair dropped dye everywhere as I sat in my bathroom. I have to say the application is different than when you use traditional at home hair color, but I love it. The lack of harsh chemical smells and this is amazing as well. Plus, I feel like you can get better control when you're doing the application. John Frieda didn't dry out my hair like some other hair dyes did. It's a beautiful color and even on my natural black hair that was undyed you can still see some tint. I think I'm going to keep this up and see if I use it on more than just my one inch natural roots. Then maybe I'll have some red highlights on the few grays that I have over time.elizabeth.y

This is the most amazing rose gold color you will find on the market!!! I always had to mix colors and it always ended up too purple, too pink or too dark… until I tried Guy Tang's my identity and I tell you my friends this is a rose gold ready to go, no need to mix with other colors THIS IS IT! It is one of the longest lasting demi-permanent colors too, woohoo. With the proper hair care this color lasts me 4-6 weeks. You can find it on Guy Tang's website or at Cosmoprof. I have very dark Asian hair. So I had to bleach 2x before using the demi-permanent. Despite this my hair was still not light enough and only partially took the color. So for the amateurs I would recommend a slightly darker gray for silver. But for light gray on blonde hair these products would be fine.Tara

I received this product and was eager to trial it. There’s nothing quite like a colour touch up to make you feel a little more refreshed and energised! The product was super easy to use and everything needed was contained in one compact box. I followed the directions with ease and all progressed to plan. The end result was reasonably true to the desired colour although my hair did end up more orange than I had anticipated. I accept this can happen with hair colours because there are so many factors that contribute to the end result. The hair colour did address my primary concern – covering the dreaded greys! The smell was not offensive as can happen with some brands and I liked the fuss free application process. A major benefit is the convenience of doing this at home at a time that suits me and a cost that is budget friendly! I have had my colour now for a week and the colour at this stage is still looking fresh with great coverage. I would suggest that anyone with thick hair or very long hair should invest in two packets and not chance a dye disaster!! I have long hair but it is very thin so one packet for me was sufficient. I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade 'Darkest brown' which is the same shade I'm trialing today. The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy. After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It's that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye. The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn't as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in. Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol's nice n' easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes. The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process. After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. Then using the conditioning Clairol conditioning treatment that comes with the hair dye, you apply from roots to tips and leave for a couple minutes before rinsing. The conditioning treatment has a lovely scent and is nice and thick. It's almost like applying a luxurious hair mask. It glides onto the hair smoothly and evenly. After rinsing the conditioning treatment you can instantly feel how hydrated you hair feels. Dying your hair often dehydrates it and your hair can feel a little worse for wear. Clairol's hair dyes are gentle on your hair and the conditioning treatment prevents damage and keeps your hair hydrated and feeling lovely. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy. I am always so very impressed with the results every time and I often get compliments from friends and family members. As my hair grows fairly quickly, I use this product every 2-3 months to help cover grey hairs. Despite dying my hair so regularly, my hair has remained healthy and manageable, and hasn't compromised my hair in any way. The only downside I can mention is that the dye stains your skin. Normally hair spray or acetone on a cotton ball or cotton pad helps remove hair dyes from skin but I found this dye to be lot stronger and barely budged from the skin. I also tried scrubbing with soap and dishwashing detergent but the dye only faded slightly. It took a few days of scubbing before the dye faded completely. Staff Review by BC's Tamara I'm not going to lie – I have greys. Lots of them. But the Clairol Nice'n Easy Permanent Hair Dye did a mighty fine job of making them disappear! I have actually used this dye in the past, and can't recommend it enough. The range of colours on offer is wonderful as there is something there for everyone. I have dull brown hair, so usually opt for a warm shade to brighten my colour – I used the Medium Chestnut Brown 5RB. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and after spending 10 mins applying the product as thoroughly as I could, it took a simple 25 minutes to penetrate before washing it out and conditioning. The colour completely covered my greys (which was my main objective), but overall my hair looks so much healthier as it is shiny and the colour has more life to it. My favourite thing about this dye is that the colour brings out the natural highlights I have and it looks really natural. At $12.99 the Clairol Nice'n Easy is a bargain as it is a high quality product and I would recommend it!BC's Tamara C.

I used this for the first time this week. I really like the shade. The trick to getting a good application is to make sure you shampoo your hair before application so it’s damp and why residue/build up is gone, which can make the color not adhere to your hair. Remember, semi-permanent coats the surface of your hair, not the cuticle, so you want it as clean as possible. Using it on dry hair will give you a tint, but probably not the bright effect you were hoping for. Liked it so much, I got a few more shades of red and brown to try out.shannon.g

this stuff is AMAZING!! So I have been on the grey silver hair trend (well trying to get there at least) lol and the stuff is a lifesaver! I couldn't get the darn brass out of my hair and it was driving me crazy! tried almost everything! My last option was toning but after all the bleaching I didn't want to use chemicals… this saved my life and turned my pale yellow to a beautiful silver after one wash with a little bit in my shampoo! then I shadow tried with it full strength! no brass slightly profile like I wanted (only in the sun and thats because I left it on as little longer to achieve the purple silver look). I also used it on my son because w bleached his mohawk twice but was still orange like really orange! one freaking wash with a purple shampoo I made with this (a little stronger than the one I made for my hair since his was so orange) and we got a beautiful silver!! I'm 1 wash!! no more expensive purple shampoo for me baby! I got one bottle and have made 3 batches of purple shampoo, shadow ripped my hair fill strength 4 times and still have over half a bottle left! My go to and will always keep it stocked in my house!! totally recommend if having title getting brass out or arrived orange after bleaching and don't want to bleach again!jessica.e

This bottle will last you a good while if you mix with water. It will still do the job and look bright and shiny. I used this to colour the blonde as my regrowth came through and trust me it looks better then having half blonde half black hair. Mixed this with the sapphire and got a beautiful blue. I have been using natural instinct for well over 10 years and I really like it, but it's getting harder to find the right color to use. I just. I just used Light golden Brown and now my hair is the medium to dark Brown it was when I was a teenager! Normally I would just color my roots, my hair on top of my head was almost blonde because of the gray underneath. But today, it is very obvious that I just colored my hair because it's not the same color at all. I will continue to use the product because it does a good job of covering the Gray. I have been using this brand haircolor for years, trying different shades. I recently went through chemo therapy and lost all my hair. Since it’s grown back in its come in with a lot of grey. I have naturally medium brown hair. It is in excellent condition and thought I would color it with this new formula. So many reviews state the new formula is not as good as the old, I love the new formula. No burning on application, no hot roots, more even coverage. Many reviews also stated that the sheets are much darker than reflected on the box. For this reason I purchased suede light brown. It is so dark! Thankfully I don’t mind dark hair on myself. This is the only negative. My hair feels so soft and fluffy. And it was great at covering my greys! I will definitely purchase again. Upon reading the instructions it seemed as if the product had improved since I last used it. I bought two packages, but one bottle covered my shoulder-length hair just fine. However, after applying and rinsing out the product as instructed, I noticed that my hair didn't feel very good. Back in the day it used to leave my hair super silky and soft, like a model in a shampoo commercial. But the real horror happened after I dried my hair and realized that the color I got was NOT the color on the box! I selected #4 dark brown to get a Hersheys dark chocolate color. Instead my hair came out looking like kona coffee grounds in water (aka, almost black). It looks completely unnatural and now I'm trying to desperately get it to wash out early. (In the shower for the first wash since coloring, my hair felt like even more of a bird's nest than when I rinsed the dye out. Bleh!) I have now sworn off hair dye for the rest of my life. Hopefully by the time I get to the special event this weekend some of it will have washed out.Amanda

I didn't approve or ask for this shade! I got starry black. I'm a natural blonde. In order for me to achieve black hair that doesn't turn green after the 1st wash,I would have to do a filler color first like a medium brown. I don't want to put all those chemicals on my hair. Plus I don't want black hair! I DID NOT USE THIS! I have used feria in the past though, I have used their bleaching kit and their auburn, red and black cherry shades. It is the only box dye I will use. It not only has an essential oil you add to it for a better smell but it also helps the hair feel softer and more hydrated as well as look shiny and healthy, well as healthy as dyed hair can look. For a box dye it's not bad. If I had gotten a color I approved of I totally would have used it! My daughter has medium golden brown hair and has been debating allowing me to use this on her. Ive used this brand of hair dye since the very first time I dyed my hair at age 15 and its always been my favorite. Ive tried other brands through out the years but nothing looks as intense or lasts as long as this brand does. The last year or so ive been using the power violets collection and they're so beautiful! I love how intense the color comes out and it doesnt strip my hair at all. Along with the products to dye your hair they also include a shampoo and conditioner which make my hair so super soft and shiny! I wish I could buy it in full size bottles but I dont think they make it. These dyes do have a strong scent you need to use them in well ventilated spaces. I usually have a fan going to help with air circulation. After using this dye I don't experience any bleeding of color on my skin or clothes. The color lasts for months on me before it really starts to fade. For reference I wash my hair once or twice a week. (But I shower more then that lol) I dye my hair around every 3-4 months. This is a great hair dye and I'll definitely continue to use it.katie.s

As someone who dyes their hair quite frequently, Manic Panic is always my go-to dye brand. So far, I have used Ultra Violet, Vampire Red (the color shown here), and Hot Hot pink. As a semi-permanent dye, it washes out quicker than permanent dyes typically do, but re-applying it when needed is super easy. Purple and pink for instance, tends to wash out quicker than red in my experience. After a week or two of washing hair daily, the purple and pink are almost completely gone. Vampire Red has seemed to last longer, however, and even after several weeks my hair is still tinted a slight pinkish-orange color unlike the other colors which leave no evidence of ever being dyed after a few weeks. To make the color last longer, I like to wash my hair and then put a shower cap on for the rest of the duration so that the water doesn't hit it the entire time, which seems to do wonders for keeping it vibrant for a little while longer. All of Manic Panics colors are super vibrant and I love that they do not have ammonia or some of the other damaging chemicals that most other dyes have. I would definitely recommend this brand for anyone who is interested in trying out a funky new do.BulldogLover

I use to love manic panic hair dye and have dyed my hair so many times with their products. However this product dyes everything it touches and I've spent many hours removing everything it has stained in the bathroom. It has unfortunately stained my entire shower as well as my skin. It's been over a week since I've dyed my hair and the dye is still bleeding on everything. I am now researching how to remove hair dye and booking myself in to the salon to remove the colour. Unfortunately due to this terrible experience I am reluctant to buy Manic Panic again. I'm aware that Manic Panic tends to bleed more than other dyes but from using their products for almost a year, I've never experienced anything like this.Charlie_09

This was the very first time I tried manic panic of any kind, and as far as the company and product itself goes, I'm definitely going to get more! Unfortunately, however, I wish they'd properly advertise how the colors will show up on brown hair. This color shows up completely green (dark green) on my hair (which is normally identical to the dark hair on the chart). Despite what I expected, the green was more than fine by me, so I added some more to my hair. If this were the only problem, I would have left 4 stars. The nice, dark, almost metallic green color left behind only lasted about 3 days afterwards. 3 days and two washes later it was virtually all gone. I know they advise bleaching to get the best color, but if they know it won't work well on darker hair, then maybe they should stop advertising it for darker hair, or at least add honest photos of how it'll actually look rather than just photoshopping a blue layer over brown hair. If I got a different color better suited for my natural hair color, there's no doubt in my mind I would leave a 5 star review for that. The product itself was very easy, left my hair soft and undamaged, and surprisingly didn't stain as badly as I expected. So bottom line, yes, I would recommend, but ONLY if your hair is light. Anything darker than dirty blonde- stay away! (Unless, of course, you're looking for green!)Greenie

Loved the name and the colour! Was all for it! the colour was absolutely beautiful in the beginning, but be aware!! Your skin and nails will be stained for days/ weeks to come every time you wash your hair. I had to use gloves, each time I washed my hair, or else I would look like princess Fiona. Lol . Even just scratching my head, or washing in the shower, by back and neck was stained. I only wash my hair about twice a week, but it still faded so quickly, after about 2 weeks blond was showing through on top, and I just didn't want to go through the staining process again, so used shampoo and baking soda, to fade it out quicker. I applied this color to very very light blonde hair (bleached — see starter photo). I left it on for maybe 40 minutes and washed it out with warm water and applied a color sealing conditioner. The color washed away immediately — but it did tone my hair and make it very light! This was kind of pretty on its own. I tried again after a couple of days and this time I left the color on for about 4 hours. I applied it and put a bag on my head and just went about my day in my house. After washing it out with COLD water and applying the conditioner the color turned out beautifully! Not sure how it will work out with longevity but I love it!ambirbler

This is my favorite coloring product. It doesnt smell like strong chemicals when you use it. And if youre just coloring again to refresh your hair then you dont even need a whole bottle. Its inexpensive and it smells good, and it works. Black brown is now my go-to after I used the jet black one for a couple of years. Black brown definitely looks black but just without that fake look you get with jet black even if you have naturally almost-black hair like mine.Mina

This is an excellent choice for brunettes. My grays were coming in on week three and I wanted some way to control them without going to the salon. This is easy to use. Because it is not the same type of salon color ingredients I was very conservative on how long I left it on my hair and it came out really nice. Since you mix it with water, you can easily touch up some gray areas around your face if needed in between. Just mix a little of the powder from the bottle and save the rest. I have medium brown hair. Light chestnut has a nice warm look.Joy

I used this color line when I was in cosmetology school. It was so unpredictable and unreliable. The color formulas never looked right on half of the clients. I couldn't trust that it would give me the proper results. Ending in a possible color correction or redo/try to fix. It made me very uncomfortable to do colors on clients when it was so unpredictable and unreliable. I havent used it again since I left school!!!! I never ever would use it again, not even if it was the last haircolor brand/line on earth! The other thing is that this stuff dosent last, like at all! Especially over greys. Having to touch up color every 2 weeks… nope!!! Shouldn't have to!!alecia.m
