I really like the idea of using an enzymatic cleaner for my pipes instead of harsher chemicals. I've had success with similar products in my bathroom sinks so I was excited to try this product for my garbage disposal. The pod was larger than expected and the process was easy. The foam cam up through my other sink and the lemen scent was pretty mild. I couldn't really see a huge change in anything but I think the benefits of this product are deeper in the pipes. I had one drain that was a little slow so I used the crystal version of the drain cleaner and it seemed to do a great job of cleaning the gunk off the inside of the pipe since something, I suspect the gunk, plugged the line. I did snake the line and was able to clear the plug. I first bought this in 1990 when I bought my first house. A lady lived there with long hair and it was thick in the drains. The plumber opened my drains but they were still slow so after that I took his advice and used this stuff. Back then it was called Drain Care and you still see the old blue/red labelled stuff today, thou Zep is changing the name. Follow the directions and make sure you put it down the drain at night or when you are leaving for 8 hours minimum. I tried everything for a crazy clog we had… My wife ran cabbage down our garbage disposal, which caused a clog to form around 10-15 feet past the P Trap. It shot cabbage and water up and out of the other drain and up the air gap to our dishwasher… The water filled up our sink and the water level stayed that way until I drained it by removing the P Trap. I used a clog buster, which is an expanding rubber balloon that plunges the pipes, and all it did was loosen my pipes and cause leaks, which I had to tighten. I used a 25 ft auger/snake, which was very difficult to get past the elbows. I had to attach the snake to my power drill, which was ridiculous to use, because it flopped everywhere. The snake got a few chunks but it wasn't doing nearly enough before it kinked too many times. This stuff… I had to use spare pipes to bypass my garbage disposal and my air gap to my dishwasher, so it couldn't bubble up and back flow, which would destroy them. Do not use this in your garbage disposal, if you don't want to replace it… Also, drain the water out of your sink by opening your P Trap, BEFORE you use this. The water will dilute the acid, and the acid will EAT your metal sink. I'm not kidding, there's a video out there showing the damage it did. The sulfuric acid must only contact with PVC pipes, nothing metal. Let me give you an idea of how strong this stuff is… As soon as I started pouring this down my drain, I heard a loud POP! It was the metal grate in my drain splitting, which is now mangled. It gave off a steam as I poured it, like acid does in the movies. The PVC piping held up well, as it should, since many protective gloves are made of PVC. I don't care about the drain grate, because this clog is COMPLETELY GONE. When I flushed it with water, there was absolutely no resistance or back up whatsoever. This product saved us a plumber charge, which might not have permanently solved the problem anyways. It also ended our 3 day battle with that horrible clog. To sum it up, this product is the Nuclear Option. It's a last resort option that is dangerous and can cause extensive collateral damage if not used properly. It is also almost guaranteed to completely annihilate whatever you use it on, including metal and skin. In my case, it destroyed an awful clog that nothing else could, and I'm glad I bought it. I try scrubbing and reading online with all kind of delimer or scrubbing with CLR Calcium ,Lime and rust remover. I have used this brand for many years cleaning small items or areas. Cleaning the holes in humming bird feeders to keep them clean for the birds. They can be used in straws on kids drink cups. We have a 1941 built home with a very problematic clay sewer lateral. Generally at least twice a year it becomes clogged and requires snaking out. The problem is usually built up organic debris that becomes stuck on roots. Switching to one ply toilet paper has helped to lessen the problem, but we still have issues. Lately the the basement drain has been pooling over about a foot in circumference every time the second story shower was run. It would also rise when both toilets (one on main floor and one on second floor) was flushed. The water would slowly drain back down. I was able to use the washing machine and sink located in basement without issue…strange. I just had plumber here about 40 days ago when the problem crept up again (just passed the 30 day guarantee). I decided to spend about $10.00 and give this a try. Rather than pour it in the basement drain, I decided to pour it down the 2nd floor bathtub drain. This way it would pass through the problem area. I poured the entire gallon down at about 11pm since no one would be able to use plumbing for at least 7 hours. An hour later I went into the basement to finish cleaning up since I expected to need a plumber again and like to pretend that I keep an organized basement LOL. While I was down there I actually HEARD the pipes clearing out! There was a sudden gush of water flowing. It sounded like someone was running a sink or tub. It stopped and I could hear it drain out near the floor drain. I was pretty sure the problem was solved based on that sound but waited until morning to use any plumbing. At 8am I boiled the pot of water that was set up. I allowed it to cool a bit since I was pouring it down the bathtub drain which has some PVC piping (boiling water can warp PVC) I poured it down the drain. Then I turned on the tub and let it run on hot for 5 min. I ran the kitchen sink on hot as well. I checked basement drain and it was dry as a bone! I flushed both toilets repeatably, then ran tub for even longer. Still dry! This stuff is amazing and I am so relieved that I didn't have to spend another $150.00 again for a plumber so soon. We recently moved into a house with pre-existing main line issues, which I found out from a neighbor. I spent Christmas eve trying everything I could to get the water to drain from our basement, to no avail. We finally called a rooter company for help to find that there was… or is (it might still be there) a ball of roots with a dead rat clogging the line thanks to the camera that the rooter ran down the line. The “rat ball†was 60 feet from the closest access point to the main line in the house. Freaks me out still. Anyway, I couldn’t spare $5800 to have the line replaced, so we changed our habits with disposing of items through the drains and hoped that the “rat ball†would move its way down the line to where it wasn’t an issue for us anymore. Nope! The drain in the basement started backing up again so I did a little research and found this main line cleaner. I started out with two gallons and used as directed before bed. I got up this morning and boiled a large pot of water and made sure that was the first thing that went down the drain. The water was still standing in my basement, so I boiled another pot, dumped it down the toilet, then went to work. To my surprise (and much welcomed relief), I checked the drain in the basement this evening agter work and the water level there had returned to normal. Washed some laundry, no back up. I purchased this at my local Wal-Mart as a last resort for a clogged kitchen sink before calling my plumber. I had removed the drain pipes under the sink and they were clear, so I knew the clog was just a short distance in the line. I was unable to feed my plumbers snake into the line so I decided to go with Plan B, which was to reconnect the drain pipes and try a drain cleaner. After reading some reviews and watching videos on various products I decided to go with Instant Power Main Line Cleaner, since that's where my problem was. I was still skeptical and even considered some of the other products on the shelves but decided to go with Instant Power. I poured the entire bottle into the drain at bedtime since the instructions say to let it work for 7-8 hours (I think) before flushing the drain with hot water for five minutes. The next morning I turned on the hot water and was disappointed when the sink started backing up. Let's start with the directions. For this to thoroughly clean about 25' of main drain, you will need AT LEAST THREE BUCKETS of the stuff. So, this can start to come close to the price of having your sewer rotted out. I used to have a large maple directly over my main drain, so I used this stuff every year and never had a problem with a blocked main drain. It's extremely tricky to use. If you don't have access to your main drain, you have to follow the directions for the lowest level toilet. You must simultaneously flush the toilet and pour about 1/3 of the powder into the swirling water. If you don't, the stuff will crystallize into a hard rock, and you will have an even bigger problem on your hands. I used to have partially blocked main drains, and this stuff always cleared it out. Just wear goggles when you use it and remember that if you use the toilet method, you have to do it in about 1/3 of the bucket at a time. Then wait about 8 hours before you use the plumbing. The day after the final treatment, you need to thoroughly flush your main drain.Figaro
