I decided to try Speick because I had been using Williams Lektrik Shave for years and wanted something with a better smell, and maybe a bit less oily. Research showed that Speick and Lab Series were just about the only 2 pre-electric lotions in contention. I'd tried Afta and really disliked it. Speick lives up to its press and others' reviews. It is light and the fragrance is mild and pleasing. I feel no need to rinse my face after using it; the fragrance lingers for a hour or two and then fades away. It seems to work as well as the Williams product, I have no complaints there. I like the fact that it is all (or mostly) natural. I also like the heavy glass bottle. Pricy, like the Lab stuff, but Walmart has a good price with free shipping, and I won't be going through it very fast.SteveA

You might ask your self why should I use a Pre-Shave Oil? Being a fairly loaded question there are many facets to that particular quandary which will lead to how don't you need the Pre-Shave Oil? Lets face it there are many products in the market place that promise a close shave or are prescribed to cut down on razor burn or a litany of other buzz words you would usually associate with a poor shave. The packaging for the Pre-Shave Oil make no bold claims and is simply stated as one of "The 4 elements of the Perfect Shave." A simple yet bold claim indeed however not far from the mark. I am familiar with the purpose of a pre-shave oil as there are a few products on the market that claim it is all you need for the shave. The idea is the oil cuts down on the drag between the razor and your face. The difference between the lavendar Pre-Shave Oil and other products I have used as you might imagine mainly is the lavender scent however also a good consistency that does not leave your skin feeling oily afterwards. Also the lavender scent which is one of my personal favorite scents is not as overpowering as products I have used in the past which lead to an odd medicinal smell that lingered throughout the day. It also provided a good bit of moisture to my shaving routine that was previously missing. I've been using Shave Secret for years but decided to give The Art of Shaving Sandalwood Shaving Oil a try as reviews were good and the cost per oz was less expensive than Shave Secret. The oil is much thicker than Shave Secret and I found that I need to apply with wet hands to dilute it a bit to get good coverage on my my face without using a ton. To dispense the oil, you have to pour it from the glass bottle and have to be careful not to dispense too much. I think I'll try transferring some of the Sandalwood oil to the Shave Secret (or other squeeze bottle) to dispense it how I prefer. Other than the dispensing issue, I really like the oil. What I DO love about this product and the brand in general is how clean the ingredients are and how amazing the products smell! If you did a blind test, you might confuse it for being a luxury brand by the scent of the products alone. What I don’t love about this product in particular is how ineffective it was in preventing razor bumps. I received the SheaMoisture Men Pre- Shave Softening Oil and I'm really glad they have expanded for a line for men. In the picture timeline you can see how it was used. He sprayed his hands instead of directly onto his beard. He rubbed it to get the oils in all over the beard. All the different oils and natural ingredients worked great against his skin and didn't create a breakout. I just purchased the Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream based on it's great reviews, and thought I would give this a try. I was a bit reluctant at first due to the cost, but I have to say it's worth every penny. I've used pre-shave oil in the past. The oil works well, but what I don't like about it is that it leaves an oily residue on the razor and makes it impossible to rinse the blade clean (I use a cartridge razor). I was curious to see how the gel would compare since it's oil free. Now that I've been using it for a couple of weeks I could not be happier. You only need to use a tiny bit. This stuff is amazing. The Taylor shaving cream is great on it's own, but this makes your blade glide like butter. The combination of the Taylor shaving cream and pre-shave gel is unbeatable.David G.
I wasn't sure about a pre shave gel but decided to try it. I'm glad I did. I use this with TOBS Jermyn Street and their sandlewood creams with my DE razor in the shower and it works great. It only takes a small amount (about the size of a dime) to cover and protect my skin from razor burn. It provides a smooth glide for the razor and doesn't clog the razor like some oils do. I have found that it does not provide the same smooth glide after the first pass with the razor but it does keep the razor burn to a minimum on the second pass. As others have mentioned the flip cap hinges can and will break but it should still close. Over all it definately provides the protection and comfort you want just be careful with the lid.William P.

i received a free sample of the priming oil so i could review it. it has a unique and pleasant smell to it. i also like the feel of it when putting it on my face, although it seemed odd rubbing oil on my stubbly cheeks and chin. I shave with a straight edge so I am always looking for anything to give me a closer shave. James B. Williams first began using shaving soap in 1840. Soap, however, tends to be drying. Anymore, many soaps are blended for lather and not to soften whiskers. The Romans shaved using goose grease & razor. Musgo Real pre-shave oil lets the razor glide over your skin without your whiskers pulling slightly as they meet the blade. I don't know if it would clog a Trak2 razor but it is perfect for a straight razor. Another advantage in using oil is that your razor blade stays sharper longer than if you used soap & water. After washing my face with hot water & soap I always put 3 drops on hands and wipe it on my beard before I lather. I never have to wash my face after I finish to get any extra oil off as the razor takes it all off. Sure it is expensive but a bottle will last a year or 2, depending on how often you shave. If you are unsure, you can always try putting on some olive oil before you lather up to see if you like it.
I have very sensitive skin and this is one of two that I have found that I can actually use. It is nice and light, smells great and really works. You get a lot in a bottle so it’s good value. On exiting the shower I apply neat Proraso Shaving Cream (Shea Butter & Sandalwood) or Cremo Original Shave Cream by hand onto my wet face. I put a little water onto my hands and rub the residue of the shaving cream on my hands into a lather which I rub over the neat shaving cream already on my face. I then shave using an adjustable safety razor which I have set to 4 on a scale of 1 – 6. I was so happy few years ago i was finally able to find this in the US! That Christmas I gifted 3 sets with the whole line to my men relatives. Note: this is not a soapy product. If you are doing a blade shave, then you want your beard to be moistened to make it softer. But if you are doing an electric shave, then you want it crisp, and this product does it. CVS used to have their own brand, but this is now the only product that I have seen for pre-electric-shave. I put some on a paper towel, and wash and treat the face in one step before shaving.
