20 Best Primers For Oily Acne Prone Skin (Jan 2023 Update)

For reference, I wear makeup on an everyday basis and I like a primer that serves a purpose; it needs to be smoothing/pore-filling, illuminating, make my makeup last longer, etc. Something. I have different primers to serve these various purposes and there's definitely some crossover in function. The Pur 4-in-1 Correcting Primer sounded like a winner but this is one of the most pointless "primers" that I've tried because it doesn't do ANYTHING to enhance my makeup experience. It doesn't smooth, isn't illuminating, definitely doesn't make my makeup last any longer, and it really isn't very hydrating. It feels like a light serum but after trying it a few times I realized that it has no reason to be in my routine. With so many great primers out there this is an easy pass.Cookie G.

I got a sample of this in my recent Ulta order (as part of the free gift) and tried it yesterday – holy cow! Lots to say. First off I have very sensitive skin that breaks out whenever I try something new and this did not irritate my skin whatsoever. Secondly the coconut scent is amazing but not too overpowering. Thirdly it's SO smooth and my makeup applied flawlessly and lasted all day! I've only ever used gripping primers before so I wasn't sure how this would work but everything stayed in place for about 12 hours – and I work in a warehouse where I run around (literally) a lot, and yesterday I was on the move all day putting up boxes and sweating – but my makeup didn't budge! I received this product for free from Topbox and Pur in exchange for my honest opinion. My first impression upon opening the box was WOW – just look at that packaging! It truly was going to be the most beautiful thing on my makeup shelf! When I first applied it to my skin, I was instantly shocked at how much it felt like a moisturiser, rather than a primer! The formula is creamy and applies just as a moisturiser does. You even need to leave it for a while for the skin to absorb the product, and even then you are left with a dewy complexion! This was instantly very different to my usual primers that create a blurring effect with a matte finish! I was also shocked that the packaging instructs you to apply this formula over a moisturiser, as it seems this is more what the product was! (However, it also states on the website that it can be applied before bed!) It really is combining skincare and makeup! As this is advertised as a primer, I wanted to try it with makeup on top to see the finished look and unfortunately I was very disappointed! I have a trustworthy foundation that I always use, but it was not friends with this primer! The foundation would not blend properly around my chin and nose and I was left with streaks and patchy marks! I'm not really sure I understand how this product is working as a primer! With all this said, I am a huge fan of the ingredients and the positive effects these have on the skin. as someone who cannot leave the house without full coverage foundation I was very I trigued to try out Tula's primer. the gel is an interesting consistency, it is odourless and just very intriguing to the touch. I used this product daily in the AM for a month after using cleanser, toner, HA, and moisturizer. it doesn't look like it, but a small amount of product goes a long way. I think this product would last for months even with daily use. does it work? not worse than others but certainly not better. it was average. meh. would I rebuy? NO NO NO my skin has been SO itchy since starting this product. forehead and cheeks are red and flaking. I have stopped using it this week and I think I will toss out the rest. I don't have sensitive skin but this is the second time my skin has reacted so violently to a product (the first was KVD foundation with the original formulation)marion-frances.c

Received this complimentary from Influenster and at first I thought the product had gone bad due to it’s consistency — still gave it a try and honestly so glad I did! I usually feel like primers don’t make a huge difference, however I love the feel of this particular one once applied to the skin. It gives a subtle blurring/mattifying effect even without applying makeup on top, and my bb cream/foundation stays on well and doesn’t flake compared to if I didn’t apply it prior. My skin has also become sensitive recently and I am very cautious as to what I use, and I’m pleased to say this hasn’t caused any new breakouts. Definitely worth a shot!klilshawty

I prefer the low effort and light makeup look so I rarely use foundations and have never used a primer before. The lady at Ulta recommended this to me for my textured skin and large pores; she said it would pair well with my spf CC cream. I’ve heard of this brand Tula but wasn’t too familiar with it and I’ve never felt the need to use primers. What made me consider this product was that it doesn’t have the irritating or questionable ingredients, and that it’s clean with some skin loving ingredients. I like that it’s like make-up and skin care in one. So now the results! It’s so smooth and light!!! I love it so much! It stays all day and holds the stuff I put over it in place. I have very oily skin and a lot of my makeup comes off at the end of the day; not with this! It also makes my pores and texture look more smooth. My skin gets clogged easily and reacts to comedogenic products, but this doesn’t clog my skin or cause it to react. This is hands down one of the best products out there in tandem with their setting sprays! I'm talking 16 hrs later, through sweat and tears, you're makeup will only need a light freshening. I love a lot of primers, but this particular primer goes great under ANY foundation. With other foundations you need to make sure you pair the base of the primer to the base of your foundation. Like you wouldn't want to use an silicone based primer with a water based foundation. It just spells disaster. You'll get beading in your pores and it looks like little dots all over stuck in every pore only accentuating them. But this primer I can use with any foundation I own. How or why I have no clue, but you spray this on, let it set, do your makeup, set with one of their setting sprays (I like the bridal one as its sweatproof) and you are good to go! These are must have, holy grail, make sure you never run out products! And the company usually gives travel sized bottles of different formulas when you purchase a full size. ****Oh! And a little well kept secret? Skindinavia makes Urban Decays Up All Nighter spray. This is cheaper and made by the same people, using the same formula! This stuff is holy grail status for me, no question! I bought this in a kit with the setting spray, and I've used them both together and alone. In both cases, I saw a definite difference in makeup longevity and oil control. Honestly, I've never found a product that made enough of a difference to be my go to before this. I tried the BECCA matte primer (too much trouble for not enough result), the MUFE oil control primer (better), Smashbox photofinish… they all made some difference, but not enough to keep me going back and buying more. This stuff is hands down amazing, and allows me to consider foundations that would previously break up and look curdled and disgusting on my skin. I'm looking forward to seeing how it will perform in the summer, and plan on pairing it with the MUFE oil control primer then if it needs a little extra help. I was skeptical because it seems that most products don't always do what they claim, however…. this did exactly what it claims. I have problems with enlarged pores on my nose and no amount of foundation, primer, concealer will cover them. This however made them COMPLETELY INVISIBLE!!! I was in shock. I wasn't too sure if I was going to like this primer. I thought that it would either be too mattifying, or not mattifying enough. This worked well to smooth out and somewhat blur pores. I mainly have combo skin, so mostly applied this in the T-zone. It lasted through most of the day, and it didn't get too greasy or oily either. I did touch up once during the day l, and that was it. I like that you get a little added SPF protection in the primer too. Long lasting, and it had a nice scent too. Great for oily or combo skin, I definitely recommend!tina m.b

I have very VERY oily skin but recently also started getting a form of dermatitis in specific spots on my face. I was previously using the BM Prime Time primer and I liked it very much. When I tried to order over the phone from a store recently that store was out of the Prime Time so I told the sales-woman about my skin and she suggested I try the Milky Face primer due to having combo skin now (the dermatitis caused dry flaky patches). OMG I've never been so satisfied with the way my skin looks at the end of the day after hours of wearing makeup and working. This primer keeps the extra oily areas looking really good while also working over the dry patches. I will now be switching to the Milky Face primer from now on. Good Hydrations is an answer to my prayers! After running out of the Prime Time primer, I went to the BE store and asked about a primer for dry skin. The rep gave me a sample of Good Hydrations and my life changed forever! I've suffered from acne and dry skin for (too many) years. I have SUPER oily skin and this primer mist is amazing. You just need to make sure your foundation is compatible with it. Keep in mind this particular primer is water based, therefore you need a foundation that is water based. Otherwise you will experience your foundation slide off, pill, look patchy, etc. If your foundation is silicone based then this primer will not work.krw94

I've played with this primer quite a bit, and now that I have it figured out I like it quite a bit. Firstly, it's super affordable and you get a lot of product. It projects a very fine mist, and it works well under a variety of foundation formulas. If you have large pores to fill, you might want to try something silicone-based since this is not going to do much for texture. It really does mattify, but you have to saturated your oily areas pretty well and let them dry completely before applying your color products. Also, try spraying your finger tips and rubbing this gently into your pores — do not spray onto your eye area or lips! I was suffering from chronically dry lips and realized that this was getting to close to my lip area and causing the issue. Great primer, just know your limits.meghan.f

I have been using this product now for over a year. I have heard IT DOES NOT COMPARE TO THE OLD VERSION. I get that and wish I had the chance to try but actually really enjoy using this. IT IS NOT THE NUMBER ONE OIL CONTROLING PRIMER OUT THERE. That being known this product is amazing! I use this WITH AND WITHOUT MAKE UP. I am now starting to do more glam type make up and use a lot of make up on my face. Having normal/slightly sensitive and oily skin I found the more make up I use the more the oils in my face come out. By using the product it reduce it by 90-95% vs no use I'm literally wiping oil and make up off, yes cringe. I even said no make up. My face routine I wash use eye and face moisturizers let then sink in a bit then spay a few all over my face and proceed to just use a little mascara. By using the spray it helps set in my moisturizer and doesn't not have the mascara bleed bc the moisturizer under the eye. So if your someone on a budget with light/mild oily skin I say take a chance, just no after a few hr use you still will have a light oil shine on certain areas (just blot off with tissue/oil removing wipe or CLEAN toilet seat cover lol). This Lorac primer is amazing! I apply it to my skin underneath my make up and it helps my make up to last all throughout the day without any creasing or smudging. All you do is apply in a circular outward motion. It also helps to keep your face looking flawless by filling in any uneven skin tone. It leaves a matte finish which is perfect for me because I have combination skin and hate to look oily throughout the day. I cannot wait to use some some more! This primer is amazing! I love the way it feels on my skin and its doesnt feel heavy at all. At first I thought i want using enough because it almost felt like it went on dry, but its just so soft and so smooth that thats how it feels. It gives a nice even skin as a base for my make up. With this my powder foundation doesnt go on heavy or look cakey at all. I have to wear a hat for work and also with wearing a mask right now they are both black and there is barely any make up transfer. I was in desperate need of finding a new primer. Prior to this, I was using CoverFX's primer that had salicylic acid as one of its ingredients due to my skin issues of being prone to acne. This is a really good illuminating face primer, it applies so easy and smooth, almost like a moisturizing gel. There is no setting into fine lines and wrinkles, it just gives your skin a beautiful glow. I received this in my Ipsy bag. It doesn’t feel oily at all when I apply it. It’s got this blueish coloring or tint to it that I think is neat. My foundation did last forever afterwards too. This primer is pretty hydrating for dry skin, I did have to apply a face mist throughout the day but that might’ve been due to the temperature here. It is very illuminating on its own when I first applied some I thought it would be too shiny but once I added foundation and everything on top it was toned down. It's great if you want to look like a vampire from Twilight with literally sparkling skin, but also look greasy and highlight all your flaws. Every little pore and wrinkle was magnified by this primer, and I looked and felt super greasy. I use BB creams instead of foundation so maybe it would work with a super matte, full coverage foundation, but if you're like me and prefer lightweight creams this stuff is awful.Patty

Burt's Bees goodness glows primer hydrates and illuminates. I do find that it is hydrating and Illuminating. The area is where I put it on my face could be called Dewey. That's why I don't actually use it all over my whole face but more as a highlighter. I like that it is natural and uses Botanicals. No cruelty to animals and eco-friendly. It is light and does not leave a sticky film and has a pleasant fragrance which isn't overpowering.seasnail1973

Saw that Minsco uses this so decided to give it a try 🙂 Blurs pores, hides skin texture and flaky skin, controls oil, and works with so many of my foundation bases (even the ones that are usually troublesome with primers). Has a silicone-y feel but dries down to a powdery finish. I've used so many primers (e.g. smashbox, hourglass, dear dahlia, benefit) that left me feeling like I could go without it, but this one is "The One" for me. I typically have dry to normal skin. This primer is very hydrating, and I love the pump on it. But I feel like it doesn't keep my foundation in place. I've tried a few different ways before reviewing. Usually my foundation stays in place all day but I feel like it kinda if causes it to swipe right off. Usually I can touch my face and my foundation doesn't come off (with powder and setting spray) but using this primer it tends to come right off with a touch especially later in the day after wearing it for a few hours. I love this primer so much! I will never get another one to use in my face, this primer makes my face clear and soft. It doesn’t give me any pimples or acne. Since, I started using this primer I don’t use any other one because it gives me the support and the coverage I want! I really recommend this primer and I hope you guys love it so as I do!! I bought after all the reviews I saw About it. Plus, it’s considered a “dupe” of its several High end competitors. Which, I agree. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elf was the genius formula creator behind all the big brand products too, instead of being the brand coming out with Similar affordable products that are more wallet realistic for the Everyday consumer after the other big brand releases. They totally could be doing both. Lots of cosmetic companies sell their formula privately and let others brand it with their name. NYX and NARS, for example. You all, this primer here is a GAME CHANGER! I’ve used some of the higher end brands and they just DO NOT compare. This stuff literally shrinks your pores and give you a such a smooth finish and lay with your makeup. Every time I use this everything just lays in a synchronized way. I pray NYX never gets rid of this product. I just might have to buy up the entire stock whenever I go to my nearest target to purchase just to be on the safe side. I received this in a subscription box at some point and it had been put away in a box of beauty samples. I came across some of these today and decided to try them out. This one is a nice formula, it's creamy and super pigmented. I just wasn't super in love with it, but I can't point to any specific reason why, so I won't remove any stars for that. The reason for the missing star is that it is not very long lasting. I put this on in my bedroom to try it out and within 10 minutes of me just cleaning up my vanity I already would have needed to reapply in the real world. The color, lifeguard, is a very pretty deep red color. Not my red, I tend to go for bright blue reds, but this is a very nice deep blue red.jennifer.h

I have an oily tzone. So I use a matte primer in my tzone. I had been using Hourglass Mineral Veil and had heard this formula was so similar. I would say is is very much like HG. I used the whole bottle. It did hold back oils. I didn't use it on my normal skin. I use something more moisturizing. I do recommend if you enjoy Hourglass Mineral Veil you may love this primerlisa .s

I bought both this and the Pacifica Cherry Matte Mattifying Primer to see how well they worked at reducing shine. The Pacifica product was meh (unless you want to still look "glowy") but this product was amazing. Just the tiniest bit patted on my fingertip is enough to completely get rid of any shine, and it lasts longer than anything else I've ever used. It needs to be lightly patted onto the skin, not smeared on. Use it very, very sparingly and one tiny jar will last for months. I hope they never stop selling this!Nature Lover

I have been searching far and wide for a dupe for my Hydrablur Primer by Dermalogica because it is one of my HG but I order it online and it is expensive. I found this product and the ingredient list is simple yet effective & non-comedogenic (a big plus for me)! This product creates a smooth base and fills in the textures I want. I scoop out a small amount with a tiny spoon and warm the product on my fingertips before applying to my t-zone, chin, and smooth out on my cheeks. I recommend having your skin moisturized well before using this product!! If I notice that there are some areas on my face that need more product, I light dab a tiny amount and work the product in. This product is in a cute container that is very portable, but on that note, for the price point and amount of product given it is kind of pricey for what you get. It has been working for me thus far but I use sparingly – less is more with this one y'all.Kait

UPDATE (3-3-21) I don't like the fact that even a tiny amount makes my liquid and my mineral powder foundation appear like my skin is peeling off where I've applied this. I've used it a total of 3 times now, using only the tip of my pinky finger and then only a tiny amount with a Q-Tip. I have only used this with Loreal's Pro-Matte foundation and their mineral foundation. It's a tiny jar for the price you pay! Holy Moley! It's a very smooth, satiny, or even silky, almost delicate texture. So, I'm on the fence about the Magic Perfecting Base Primer. I decided to purchase the Infallible Matte foundation to see if it would hell keep my face looking good or at least prevent the foundation from making my skin look dry. I applied a very tiny amount to key areas i would like to cover (forehead, smile lines, tiny line on my chin, nose..)and I waited a good 10 minutes or longer before I applied the foundation. My nose looked like skin was peeling after a sunburn, it was the product-I lightly brushed it off and thought maybe I used more than a tiny amount? No idea. But all I had to do is just lightly brush off what got cakey and was good to go! No messy look on that area after. I'm happy my face didn't break out! That is a major plus! I don’t buy a lot of black radiance products but when I saw that this was a poor minimizing primer I decided to give it a shot. I have been using this for about three days and I have to say that I am really pleased with how it truly minimizes the poor and gives my make up a matte finish without it looking completely mat. It still looks natural which I love so I’m not trying to look like a filter or anything but I like to look as natural as possible in and this minimizes pores and gives me a natural matte finish without it looking too over the top. It doesn’t have much of a smell to it and the crew the texture is like a satin feels so it feels nice it doesn’t feel oily or greasy it doesn’t leave my skin feeling oily or greasy either. I really like this primer I will be getting more when I run out and this is some thing that I would recommend to anybody who’s looking for a primer to help minimize your pores and give you a nice Matte natural lookLorienlnj

I used this several times. I have combination oily skin with a slight red color. My skin is far from perfect after having my son due to acne so I always try to use a primer to help conceal a bit of the texture and redness. I haven't noticed a difference from the green tint or from holding my makeup or texture. I feel like it is just an extra step. Plus the pump sucks you have to pump it a hundred times and then when the product does finally come out you get way too much.Wilsoncm

This primer is actually really good. A glides up on my face and it just melts into my skin. It definitely helps my make up last as well as it sets a foundation for my foundation. I’m able to use my oil base sunscreen and it not mess up with this primer. I really liked the primer speak at first I was a little scared but once I put it on my face it definitely gave me a little glow that I love and I didn’t feel heavy at all. My current favorite primer from @purcosmetics . It’s their 4 in 1 correcting primer Energize and Rescue which contains : 1. Caffeine 2. Aloe 3. Coconut water 4. Probiotics 5. Ceretin complex (combo of retinol and ceramides) It plumps and hydrates my skin , providing a smooth canvas for makeup. I have dry skin so this primer has been my go-to. I was using the silk canvas from Tatcha , but it mattifies and makes my skin dry. Hence I have been preferring my Pur primer these days. I got this in my @boxycharm box a few months ago. My makeup looks smooth and lasts all day with this primer . I love that it contains good ingredients and is vegan friendly ,cruelty free ,paraben free ,gluten free and talc free. .nisha.m

This is a beautiful smoothing primer that creates a silky base for makeup. It fills in pores slightly, but it is not the most blurring primer on the market. It does fill in fine lines effectively. After applying this primer, my skin looks and feels very soft and smooth. It creates a silky base for makeup and foundation glides over this primer easily. This primer does cause my skin to be more oily than it usually is. I like the extra glow on the high points and perimeter of my face, but not in the T-zone. I add powder to the T-zone to counter the oiliness that this primer adds to my skin. Overall, I like the beautiful base this primer creates for makeup and I recommend it!stephanie.w

Tinted moustizer was not available for tagging. I Like this moisturizer because it does have a very light coverage and blends perfectly into the skin as long as you have the correct undertone. A little goes a long way; it has a very dewy finish which oily skin most likely will have to set and personally it's a little bit too dewy finish for my liking for an everyday look without foundation on top. Could be used as a primer to add extra coverage and blendibility to a full face. DRY SKIN WILL LOVE THISbeverly.a

This is my favorite product!! I can wear/use this in so many ways!!! Most days I wear this on its own without makeup, over my SPF moisturizer. Sometimes I use it as a primer to a foundation. My favorite way to use it is to mix it with a concealer! It makes my concealer go on so much smoother and makes it less tacky or cakey! I even sometimes mix this with a few dabs of the Skin Perfect Primer! My only complaint is that it doesn't contain SPF, but it goes over my SPF nicely!Mallory A.

I started wearing this Hydrablur Primer and combine with the Age Smart Primer with SPF once the Pandemic started. I had read that Primer fares better with the facr masks that we had to start wearing with the Pandemic. My normal daily routine ends with the Hydrablur followed by the Age Smart with SPF. I feel they provide enough coverage for me and I love the way my skin feels with them, nice and smooth. I have very sensitive skin, so it's hard to find a foundation that doesn't irritate my skin, that also doesn't feel heavy. I definitely love the feel and coverage of the Dermalogica primers. the best pore filling primer I have ever used hands down. I have used many on the market but this one isn’t a gimmick it’s legit. It makes my base look so smooth and like an actual filter and adds a nice glow to the skin. I absolutely love this product and the coverage is great in that a little goes a long way- seriously. This primer is so smooth and refreshing. Its blends well with foundation, leaves no clumping or cracking, and leaves your skin smooth. The product does minimize pores as it claims. I would however change the pump on the product because it does collect air and makes it difficult for the primer itself to come out of the packaging, but other than that there are no issues with this product 😊…ginger.e

This is legit one of the best primers Ive ever tried.I have dry, sensitive skin from lupus Ive been on the hunt for a good primer that I can wear under my Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint. Its so finicky to get right but when it doesits magic. I needed something that was silicone like but not actually silicone my makeup straight up melted off when I used a porefilling primer. Bonus points if it was clean beauty.Enter this primer. Its serum based so it doesnt sit on top of the skin create a barrier for your products to not soak in. Its skincare but I can use my Biossance sunscreen underneath it doesnt change the finish of the primer. Its not exactly mattifying but makes my skin look naturalnot glittery like the Ilia primer does. It helps grip my makeup in place combined wsetting powder spray makes it almost mask proof. Plus when I sweat Im not noticing things just breaking apart with chunks missing. Its freaking amazing. Its lightweight I let it soak in for 5 minutes.Now I must say that Ive only used it wthe Ilia skin tint so I dont know how well this works with other foundations but if you can get a sample Id definitely try it. I hate spending 45 on primer but oh well. If I find a product that doesnt make me break out or make my sensitive skin flare then its worth it. You do only need a few drops for the entire face so the bottle will last a long time at least.Anonymous

Not silicone it will likely end up separating.The amount 13 drops is PLENTY for an entire face and rough spots. Anymore and the product might pile upon foundation application.In consideration to the above statementany heavier products applied directly before that havent fully absorbed, may also encourage piling. Allow your skin time to absorb everything to prep it. In this case, try the suggestion of adding drops to your moisturizer and a Quick Prep trick.Do not be alarmed when your skin does not feel silky smooth, silicones are what create that canvas feeling. This product is the ONLY thing i have tried that works all day on my oily skin. My biggest concern is my forehead. I always wanted a matte look that lasted all day and surprisingly this stuff gives me just that! If you struggle to find a product like i did, this may be for you!gabby

I prefer liquid primers, but this is a great stick for travel. I hardly ever check bags when I fly, so I'm always on the lookout for great products that cut down on my liquid allotment. I bought this stick specifically for a summer backpacking trip around the U.K. Between high temps, stuff trains, and long treks with my backpack, I wanted something that would hold my makeup on without getting too shiny. It went on very smoothly and I could definitely feel and see a difference in how my skin and makeup looked at the end of the day when I used it compared to when I did not. The only problem I encountered was the stick itself getting warped. The stick started twisting out crooked and getting caught in the threads. I had to be careful when putting it on my face so it wouldn't break off. Not a huge deal, since I used my fingers to smooth it over my face anyway, but a little annoying because little pieces would sometimes crumble off and get on my stuff whenever I opened the stick.Maizeball

I love this primer! I've used it with Fenty matchstick & laura mercier tinted moisturizer. I do not want a lot of coverage so for "everyday" I use this on its own. My skin is clear except for a little texture, dryness, under eye bags, and redness. This pretty much takes care of all of that and I end up with a natural look, that fills in any creases, makes my under eye look less puffy, and has a little pigmentation to reduce some redness. Most foundations look dry or flaky on me so I prefer moisturizing or satin finish products. This doesn't feel moisturizing but it looks smooth and doesn't feel drying. It requires minimal pressure to blend it out. It has some build-ability so when i put on extra under my eyes it doesn't get clumpy. It seems to even work by stippling with a fluffy foundation brush to "melt" it into the skin. I'm not sure how this will work for oily skin or if you like a full coverage foundation.Amelia
