20 Best Products To Get Wavy Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

My hair is thin and wavy, with low porosity. I rarely wear it in its natural state, opting to dry with a round blow-dryer brush and flat iron. SCENT: This reminds me of the Melrose Place scent, and is noticeable upon spritzing, but fades rather quickly. TEXTURE: A little goes a long way. The right amount gives my hair volume; too much gave it a crispy texture. Overall: I tried this four different ways, With varying degrees of success. First, using my everyday product routine, using Kérastase Nutritive Nectar, Color WOW Dream Coat and Olaplex #6 on the ends of my hair. I misted the OUAI all over, then sectioned and twisted my hair, pinning each section at the bottom and air drying. The result was a somewhat frizzy mess. Second, I used it as a substitute for dry shampoo (which I do not use) to see if it would ‘wake up’ and refresh day-old washed hair. Unfortunately this made my hair look greasy, so that was a quick no-go. Third, I used a curl defining cream (MoroccanOil Curl Cream) and sprayed the Ouai, repeating the styling steps above, and gently blow drying after allowing my hair to air dry for about a half hour. This combination gave my hair very soft, natural-looking waves that I pulled up into a ponytail. This look lasted all day, through being out in the sun, heat, and misters. It was a style I have attempted before, but by the end of the day it is usually flat. This was encouraging! On my fourth and final attempt, I used the curl cream, repeated the original styling steps, and used a diffuser to blow dry my hair. This resulted in slightly defined waves that felt a little crispy, with an overall voluminous effect. Final Thoughts: This is not a product that I would use often, only due to the texture/thickness of my hair. Although it does provide some added volume, finding the right balance between full and crunchy is tricky. For someone who washes their hair 2-3x a week, this can be a tricky product to use. I have 2B hair, and a lot of it, but my hair texture is very fine, unlike many people with strong natural wave patterns. Curl creams tend to weigh down my hair, making it flat and greasy. Salt sprays are of course drying and damaging in the long term. But Ouai Wave Spray is the perfect product! It has the nourishment and definition which other people can get from the shea butter heavy creams, all in such an easy and light manner! I simply rake the spray through my hair and scrunch with it right out of the shower then use a medium-hold gel to maintain definition throughout the day. For reference, I have very long, curly and dry hair. Having curly hair, I don’t need that much help to show some waves so I use this product as a touch up. PROS – It controls the fizz on my hair. – It helps redefine my curls after several days since washing my hair. – It smells so good (in my opinion) so I love to spray it on my hair even just to enjoy the perfume. If you don’t like strong scents, stay away from this one. – The spray delivers the product very evenly. – Reasonably priced. – Cruelty free. CONS – It tends to dry my hair so it is a good option on these humid Florida summer days but I won’t be able to use it during the winter. I cannot use it everyday because of this reason. – I have curly hair so I don’t have volume issues so I cannot say if it adds volume.sara.a

I have very fine, high porosity (very absorbent), blonde curly hair. I don't have the best of luck with styling creams, some work and some weigh my hair down, some feel very crispy, some make my hair look instantly greasy. This stuff works! I wash and condition (sun bum regular or Pacifica pineapple curls) and then put a little of this styling cream into my wet but not sopping wet hair. Then I sleep on it and in the morning my hair is good to go. Nice natural looking and feeling curls that stay in. As someone who has stick straight hair, I love this product. A disclaimer, my hair is not capable of getting that cute scrunched look. If I want curls, heat is my only option. I shower, add the styling cream (smells amazing), air dry overnight, and then curl in the morning. This is the only product that I have used that will help my hair hold the curls in all weather and all day. I also use very minimal hairspray after curling. This truly is a magic cream for super straight hair that doesn’t hold a curl!becka

I just use a very small amount like directions advised, worked it into my wet hair, scrunched it with my hands and let air dry. My hair is sooo soft, no frizz and my curls are defined. I found this product yearssss ago when I first started the Curly Girl Method. It was very runny, white and much lighter. I ended up repurchasing it and when I opened it, it is incredibly yellow and thick and the ingredient list is completely different. I don't use it everyday to care but in general, Shea Moisture was my Go To absolutely favorite brand and I used their shampoo and conditioner for about 8 years- but I noticed it a couple of months ago stripped my hair and caused an insane amount of frizz. What a shame. I will never buy another Shea Moisture product. They used to have amazing ingredients, now they have all weird chemicals and the smells changed badly. The hold is not there and my hair is low porosity type 2b hair and i did not find it reducing frizz either. I pair this mousse with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie from the same product line and they work really well together! I section my hair and evenly distribute the Smoothie, then I use this Mousse to focus on my ends. Finally blowdry with a diffuser attachment. When I use both products together my curls clump together nicely and my ends stay frizz-free. I can also use the Mousse on its own for a more natural/less defined curl. This is hands down the best curly hair gel on the market. I use 2-3 pumps for my whole head and scrunch it in after applying a leave in conditioner to very wet hair. It starts by drying hard but then as the day goes on, your hair looks and feels so soft and the curls are still in place. If i’m looking for a stronger hold because of a slick-back ponytail or something, I usually opt for a stronger gel like Not Your Mother’s. However, I still use Uncle Funky’s Daughter every single day and it’s been excellent for my 3b hair! And CGM approved!!! Worth every penny and lasts long.Natalie

I branched out a year ago to try new products for my wavy hair and I stumbled on this one. I wasn’t sure at first because it’s a weird texture. Kinda like a watery gel. I wasn’t 100% sure it would help my hair. Omg. I was so wrong to be skeptical. This stuff is in my everyday hair arsenal. I scrunch this into my wet hair after a shower. Sometimes it’s all I use and it leaves my hair soft and gently defined. If I want stronger definition, I add in Marc Anthony’s curly mousse right after this and scrunch it in with a t-shirt then let air dry. Feels just like snot!! And gets the job DONE! So just so that you know, I’m a lazy 4C natural. Meaning I do bare minimum to maintain a few strands of hair on my non-chemically treated hair. I literally do not use styling products, partially out of laziness but even more so out of fear of breakage and dryness etc. I took a chance, and for the first tome in years, I tried a styling product, and this was it. It’s a gel with the exact consistency of snot. First wash your hair, condition, leave in condition or whatever, and then while your hair is still soaking wet, apply a GENEROUS amount. Finger detangle/shingle/whatever you to that usually gets a little more definition in your hair and boom. Soft not crunchy curls. Such an amazing hold without feeling like your hair is going to fall out. No flaking. I am about 1 year into my CGM journey, and at this point – I rarely find products that work as well as my hair's natural oils. Even though I try to avoid shampoo, when I do use it (before hot tools or after about 3-4 weeks of conditioner rinses) I need to add a bit of moisture to make up for what I've rid my curls of. I tried this product after a wash day. It is one of the only products I've tried recently that actually feels natural in my hair. It helps to define curls and rid frizz. It dries with a light cast, but just enough for my hair to clump not enough to leave a waxy/dry texture like other competing products. I rarely feel comfortable using only one product. It's either a natural look sans products, or a mix of products (leave-in, oil, cream, maybe gel and spray etc., Depending on the style). This product is a mix of both worlds; leaves my hair natural looking without being too fluffy, yet offers enough moisture and oil for clumping without being heavy. Love the shine it adds. Ouai Curl Crème saves time for me since it's a cream + oil + hydrator + styling product. Great for traveling with. Easy to refresh dry hair with or style wet hair with. The scent is so luxuriously floral yet sweet, the packaging looks elegantly simple, and the bit about the "ex" on the packaging gave me a good chuckle. Ouai Curl Crème has my curls screaming, "oui, oui!" I have natural roots, ends relaxed and dyed (damaged), mix of curl textures (2b-3c), long length. This product is clearly a creme that is not shy to define, and give your hair a subtle yet noticeable shine. IMMEDIATELY after drenching my hair in water, and applying the product, I barely had to touch my hair, and the definition was VERY apparent. Y'all, when I say, I was shook… I have never in all of my 21 years of life had a product instantly define my hair upon application. I barely had to finger comb. It for sure provides a nice element of moisture as well, and I find that the more I've used it these past couple of weeks, the softer my hair is getting. I'm not 100% sure if it's this product, or some of the other products that I've been using in my hair for the time being, but I do know that this is clearly the moisture and defining agent in the squad of hair products I've been using. This product has chia & linseed oil, babassu oil, and coconut oil in it, which are clearly carrying the product and running so that it doesn't even have to jog on it's own. Babassu oil is known as an oil that promotes high moisture retention, which seals the moisture into your hair shaft (ideal for high porosity hair types), and you know lack of moisture retaining products in your haircare routine is one of the #1 causes for breakage. Chia seeds are rich in fatty acids which work to not only penetrate your hair shaft (great for low porosity hair types), but seal in the moisture as well. Linseed oil is the same as flaxseed oil, which is high in vitamin E, and not only treats hair loss, but promotes growth. For my dry scalp peeps, flaxseed oil also can be used to prevent dandruff, and can provide relief. If you have damaged hair, or chemically processed hair, this is very ideal, since it has great moisture retaining properties, and it seals damaged cuticles. I have pretty curly hair but it's very fine and I was worried this cream would be too heavy but that is not the case at all! I use this on my hair while it's wet by section with a denman brush and my curls look incredible. if you diffuse, it creates a great mask for the curls that you can brush out after. my curls seriously last 3 days through workouts, sleep (I plop/pineapple my hair without a bonnet and they stay!) DC humidity, all of it. This conditioner is amazing! Of all the conditioners I’ve ever used (I’m in my 20’s so I’ve been through a looot of conditioners!) this one is by far the best. I don’t need a huge amount of it to get my hair untangled, and when I do brush through it I barely have any tangles at all. It’s also very gentle on my hair and the smell is light and not overpowering. So impressed with this product and very glad to have found it. Okay, at first I was suspicious about this product because I really only knew Sun Bum for their sunscreen so I was a little confused seeing they did products for hair. But guys…this product is AMAZING. As someone who constantly buys products to help her curly hair, this has been a life changer. I bought this on a whim because I was like, what's the harm in another product supposedly for curly hair? Boy was I surprised!! I used to cowash because I was having such a hard time keeping my hair from getting frizzy but as a consequence my roots would get kinda greasy and sometimes my curls didn't look as hydrated as the cowash would advertise. i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl

I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m

I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

I actually received this as a sample product and I must say that it works well. Let's give a bit of a back story on my hair. I have curly/coily hair that is currently color treated and is currently a bright magenta color. As a WOC with natural brown black hair, this color required quite a bit of bleaching. As a result, I rotate using DevaCurl Decadence No Poo and One Condition, with my Kevin Murphy Restore Me cleansing conditioner and Kevin Murphy's Repair Me conditioner. Generally, after washing my hair, I apply 2 leave in conditioners (usually a pump of One Condition with 2 pumps of Kevin Murphy's Leave In Repair on top) and then my styler which is usually Kevin Murphy's Killer Curls. Well today, I was going through one of drawers in my bathroom and found this Wave Maker. I decided to give it a go. I applied 2 conditioners as usual (this time I used my One Condition and my Mielle leave in) and parted my hair as I'd like to wear it and applied a nickel sized amount of this styling cream on each section of my hair. I raked the product through detangled hair, scrunched it, and then let my hair air dry. My curls came out wonderfully. I will definitely be buying a full size of this product once I finish my killer curls as this is cheaper, easier to get my hands on, and works REALLY well.Gen

So I have wavy/curly hair that's probably a little more curly than the intended client base of this product (2C/3A). I tried it because so many of the products I had been using were a bit too heavy for my hair and it was looking a little flat and greasy. This product is fantastic for a few reasons but I think the most important is that you can use it on its own, so if you want a simplified routine that turns out soft yet defined waves and curls in a short amount of time and with minimal financial investment, this is a safe bet. If you want a little more hold or if you live in a climate with more humidity, you can absolutely follow this up with a gel (or gel-cream if your hair gets dry). I personally do not do this because I like the way my curls and waves fall throughout the day with this; it looks very tousled and effortless. For the other commenters saying that this makes their hair dry, I would recommend using a leave-in conditioner prior to putting this in your hair. This is a great product, but I do think it may require some experimentation (like with all curly styling products). With that said, if you have the means, I highly recommend this! I don't normally write reviews, way too busy, but I am really impressed with this! I have a lot of hair, but it is very fine and poker straight – zero body. I recently grew it back to shoulder length and it does not hold any style. Pretty much every product weighs it down or makes it look greasy. I LOVE, LOVE Wave Maker. It took a bit to get used to applying on soaking wet hair, but that is really the trick for me. After washing I loosely wrap my hair in a towel and squeeze, just so it is not dripping. I apply 3-4 drops of Argon oil and comb through. While air is still VERY WET I put a bit more than nickle size dollop on one hand and rub hands together only enough to spread over both hands and apply from roots to tips. I then squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel. I cup my hands and scrunch from ends, then I flip my hair over, with my head upside down, and scrunch hair against my scalp, cover and twist up with a microfiber hood type towel and leave about 10 minutes while applying makeup, then release and allow to air dry. I get a great tousled, wavy result every time. I would definitely be cutting my hair short again without it. Hope this helps!Wavy Now!

Dare I say a dupe for Ouidad's old school Setting Mist? I used Ouidad's for years, but Ulta doesn't carry it anymore so I tried this and love it- they really are similar products. This stuff surprised me — it's simple, good, smells nice, it's not fussy…..essentially takes your hair's natural texture, wave pattern and…..let's it do it's thing without interfering much. Strange way to describe a product. Here's the deal: I have long, fine (fairly thin) hair. It can be QUITE curly if I "coax" it a lot (layer on leave-ins, cocktail creams and gels, diffuse for an hour, that sort of thing). BUT — I don't want to spent 90 mins on my hair. I want to spend 5 minutes and let it air dry. I've been on the hunt for A SINGLE PRODUCT I can toss in towel-dried hair, let air dry and have "reasonable"-looking hair. I know with one product I'm unlikely to get all the perks (probably not a combo of frizz-control, curl-definition, volume and hold exists in ONE PRODUCT), but I'd like to have "nice-looking" hair that doesn't need a hair dryer. BUT – this does a NICE job of taking my natural hair texture and "preserving" it while it dries. Very little hold, but some nice soft frizz control. Not amazing curl enhancement, but some small amount of volume. It doesn't so much "change" what my hair does so much as it "stays outta the way" and allows my hair to be wavy, beachy, it feels like there's NOTHING in my hair, there's ZERO cast, no-product feel, but definitely adds some volume and softness. I was *QUITE* surprised. Was looking for something to replace a Very Expensive Brand that gives you 5 oz of something that you'll tear through in a week. This seems to fit the bill. No heat required, some gentle definition, plenty of volume and hair that FEELS LIKE HAIR. Will be experimenting with using different amounts of this, but I'll definitely re-purchase. Another staple to have for 2c/3a curls. But only after washing. This can be too heavy. I use only a silver dollar size amount from mid shaft to tip. It gives my curls a little hydration. I wish Aussie would specify that this product is for African-American, or natural hair that is 3c to 4c in texture. This is an amazing and affordable product for the right hair textures. Unfortunately, there are bad reviews from people with hair textures that this product is not best intended for. I usually look for products for my hair that specify they are intended for African American hair. I somehow stumbled upon this product and I fell in love! It smells great, is inexpensive, and usually easy to find in plenty of retailers. I am a huge fan! I use this product on my wet 4b hair and let it dry naturally for curly wash and wear. I will place this product on my daughters 3c hair while wet and blow dry straight. It is shiny and moisturized without being greasy, flakey or drying.Jajat

COME ON TARGET with the consistently fake reviews given “as part of a promotion” or plucked off of another “influencer” site. DO BETTER. Anyhow -the Frizz Taming Curl Cream by Aussie leaves you hair looking really greasy and weighed down. I’ve started with 2 quarter sized dollops (long, wavy hair) and it looked so dirty. I brought it down to a dime sized amount and that left my hair frizzy and greasy. There really is no application I can find that would be redeeming for this product.todoolittle

I like the curly shampoo and conditioner, they work wonders for me compared to other shampoos/conditioners I’ve tried. A couple of hours after conditioning my hair and going outside my hair is frizzy again, so I tried the frizz taming cream. It seems to help, but for the amount I needed to tame the frizz it made my hair too oily and I lost my curls. I used it with and without damp hair and brush. I also tried the 2nd day activator spray which worked better for me to keep the curls but I had to spray a lot in my hands and apply it, and it didn’t get rid of any frizz.Bacon Cat

First of all, Moroccan Oil is the best. It smells great, it feels great, it makes me commit (which is hard to do). I had previously bought the hard styling gel for my husband and he was blown away! No more of that “we shouldn’t be spending our money on this” stuff, and more “hey, will you buy me more of that gel again” talk. It was a GAME CHANGER (as all my married ladies know). However I was unable to find the hard styling gel ANYWHERE except for ebay for a ridiculous amount of money, so I convinced my husband to try the molding cream and…. it’s ok. He loves the smell, the nonshiney finish, but hates the fact that it doesn’t hold well. Not like the other stuff. Good thing I can use this cream for myself!Lindsey D.

Moroccan Oil Molding Cream is the best product I have found for my hair. I have several cowlicks and very thin hair. When I use the molding cream, I can style my hair and it looks full and stays in place without using other products. It does not feel sticky. I have 2C, high density, coarse, porous, long hair. Since adding heavy highlights to blend the grays, my hair has been a dry, frizzy nightmare! I have read endless product reviews, watched countless You Tube Videos regarding care and products for my hair. I have purchased so many products that it is insane, and none fully managed to clump my curls/waves and provide humidity protection.
I use a leave in conditioner applied in the shower to soaking wet hair. I then use a curl primer. I scrunch these products into hair and micro plop to remove excess water. I then apply curl keeper just like gel, using praying hands method to coat each curl. I add more to the crown and smooth over waves. I then plop for 10-30 minutes depending on if I’m air drying or diffusing.
I actually prefer to air dry and this product allows that, though it takes hours to dry. Can form a slight cast which I actually love. Once fully dry any crunch is easily scrunched out. I NEVER have shine in my hair due to the coarse texture but with this my curls are defined and shiny. Best part is that even in high humidity this holds perfectly.
I cannot speak to 2nd or 3rd day hair as I haven’t been able to test this part yet.

This stuff is magical. This does more for my hair than blowdrying. It gives you the blowdried carry and volume and an excellent hold too. Touch up with some product if you want but it might not even be necessary. This is a daily essential for me.Matthew

I received this sample size product complimentary to try from Influenster and Moroccanoil for my honest review and opinion. I really liked the smell of this cream. My hair is kinda weird it’s curly underneath but on top it’s more wavy and frizzy. The parts where my hair is naturally more curly curled super pretty and looked great but the wavier pieces it didn’t change much. It felt a little heavy also but I may have just used to much product. I feel i would need to use it a few more times to give a more accurate review but right now I’d say it’s an average curl defining cream. I also let my hair air dry and I’m curious how it would look if I used a diffuser. I think I’ll end up buying a full size and give it a try. My daughter also has curlier hair than I do and I feel it may be better with her texture and curl. Overall I liked it and would recommend it for anyone with curlier hair.Meliss86

I LOVE this product and this whole brand. I was sent a sample of the curl defining cream and the smell won me over instantly. It just makes your hair smell so good. My husband thought it was my shampoo or conditioner, but he told me my hair smelt so good the first time I used this product. I even went and bought the perfect defense heat protector spray after they sent me this sample. I use it after I curl my hair with my straightener and it just makes my hair smell amazing, reduces any frizz left, and makes my curls bouncy. I also let my daughter use it and she loved it as well. She has super curly ringlets and used it after a shower and her curls looked so good. They were bouncy and frizzless. Received this as a free sample from Influenster. The sample size was a bit too small for me to get a full idea of how this product works for my hair specifically as I usually need a few weeks of use to make a fair judgement, but from a limited perspective, my takeaways are as follows: Smell- amazing, the standard MoroccanOil smell Texture- I prefer styling creams and used this in place of my current one and I did notice that this left a bit of a shell to my hair after use. If I had enough to try again, I may use a bit less product next time, though I didn’t use much. Seems pretty concentrated. If I had received a full bottle, I do think I’d continue to use it until it ran out but I don’t think I’ll be purchasing this item. Everyone’s hair is different and mine reacted sort of “meh.” Not bad but not impressive either. I think fans of the line will not regret the purchase, however I didn’t find that I had any urge to switch from my current styling cream (although this one smells so much better)roxanneh

The leave-in is unfortunately rather less suitable for my hair. Have very many and thick, wavy to curly hair. It makes nice soft hair, but gives me too little hold, which leads to the fact that the curls quickly "hang out" and lose definition. Also, my hair tends to get frizz from this product. However, I think that this leave-in can work very well with a different hair structure. The scent is good as in the entire Curl Expression series, it reminds me of a hairdressing salon and is something different.Delia

A good smelling curl cream. Soft, light consistency, which is easy to apply. According to the instructions, you should wrap the curls with your fingers when applying and thus strengthen the defining. In the handling therefore rather cumbersome. The hair feels very smooth afterwards, the curls but not necessarily defined. This product also smells very pleasant.Lotti_80
