Best Serum For Sensitive Skin (2024 Update)

I was so excited when I discovered that Aveeno released a new skincare line revolving around oats. My skin loves oats but so far I've only used Colloidal oats in body lotion like Aveeno daily and Eucerin eczema line. I first saw Dr. Shereen Idriss rave about this serum, then Dr. Dray and then the whole skinfluencers community. God knows why I slept on this because it then ran out of stock for 3 months!! Anyhow I've now got my grubby hands on it. First impression is that it's very light and absorbs quickly. I'm using both AM/PM as I'm using Tret so my skin needs all the calming benefit it can get. It’s a soothing serum that’s formulated with their triple oat complex which is a blend of oat kernel oil, oat kernel flour, and oat kernel extract. They also included feverfew to help increase the calming effect. Edit: I patch tested this for a couple of days on my chin and developed a cystic spot. However my chin is a breakout prone area so I decided to try it on my whole face. I woke up to find lots of little whiteheads and my skin feels very clogged. I think this might be too much for my oily skin especially in the warm weather. So disappointed as I've been waiting FOREVER to try this but it's left me underwhelmed.iHerb Customer

I never leave reviews for products, but I had to for this. I have always had combo oily skin and in my early 20s suffered from hormonal acne. I have tried many products and settled with cerave lotion because it was gentle and didn't break me out. I have always wanted more with my moisturizer but was scared to try anything new because I break out so easily, well I saw the calm and restore line and gave it a try and it's perfect! I was sceptical of this just because I can’t digest oats or food that have oats in it, I was afraid my skin would also not tolerate it well, but I had heard so many good things and saw so many reviews that i decided to try it out and I have to say it is like everyone said, a calming and soothing serum that makes my oily skin feel super hydrated! Not only you don’t need a lot to cover the whole face and neck but the pump makes you collect a small amount of product which in my view is actually the perfect way to use just what you need and save money in the process even though the size seems small. The scent is so so mild, barely even there, and my rosacea-prone skin has not reacted badly to it. All in all if you have sensitive, oily and rosacea I will recommend this serum! I have to say the reviews surprised me. I've been using this serum with my routine for 3 weeks now and can only say good things. My skin is very dry and dehydrated. I'm in my 40s with some old sun damage and fine lines and my goal was to help heal my pregnancy melasma and help texture and lines. I use a korean essense first, followed by this niacinamide serum, vitamin c serum, a moisturizing ceramide toner and a moisturizing sunscreen every day and use a peptide-cerimide mousurizer unstead of sunscreen at night. The only thing I changed 3 weeks ago was switching out my old hyaluronic acid serum for this product. My skin is glowing. Im noticing a slow decrease in the extra texture and "patchiness" and keep getting complimented by friends who see it too. I saw a change after my 2nd time.

I layer a lot of products, although I mist between layers to help it soak in. Im my case I need all that moisture, and for my dry middle aged skin this has been great. Reading the reviews though I wont be trying it on my boyfriend who has rosacea… Eek!Tara Klang

I too have fallen for the Niacinamide fad that had happened on Insta and have tried my share of different Niacinamide serums. The @naturium serum is by far my favorite stand alone Niacinamide product. It checks off everything in the box, high percentage, formulated with Zinc, works well with layering. It shows a visible difference in my skin when used consistently. The other ingredients include, Propanediol, Glycerin, Zinc PCA, Vitamin E, by and Sodium Hyaluronate. Zinc is supposedly an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and regulates oil. It also shows to protect and aid in wound healing and regeneration. This is why Zinc Oxide is so often found in high performing sunscreens, as it can reflect the sun and it creates a barrier between the skin and any damaging UV rays. I’ve been using the Survival 0 serum nightly for over a month now and I love it! This product is truly one of the MOST powerful antioxidant serums you can buy, so I prefer to use it nightly so it can assist with my skin’s natural repair mechanisms when I’m sleeping. I’ve found I prefer using this prior to my night cream instead of mixing the two together. I find layering that way helps both products soak into my skin, whereas before I’d wake up feeling like some of the product was still sitting on top of my skin. This product is great to use with tretinoin, adapalene, BHAs and AHAs. I used adapalene for 4 months when I was around 18 and experienced a lot of dryness and peeling, stopped using adapalene after I moved to a country where you need a prescription for it. A few months ago, I started adapalene again and had recently gotten more into NIOD as a brand so I thought I could try this combo. When I did I was in awe. The symptoms I had previously experienced never happened to begin with. I even tried skipping a day of Modulating and only then did my skin feel tight and dry from the retinal. It really helps alleviate any redness and dryness from harsher products. Now I always use it along my acids and I never feel my skin tighten after using my salicylic acid anymore! I knew Modulating would help with redness but I was surprised with how well it handled dryness as a side effect. I never peel, and if you decide to use the product on its own then I've found that it actually helps support the skins bouncy feel. But I do really use a lot of hydrating products so I'm not sure how much of it can be attributed to NIOD haha. Overall agreat product, use it with harsh products to help with side effects for best usage. 10/10 would recommend!Nico

I have been using this antioxidant serum for two years now and I'm so pleased with the results. The texture to this serum is so elegant and spreads really well. Over time I've noticed less discoloration on my face and it's really helped improve my rosacea. I definitely look less red for using this product. It's definitely not your average antioxidant serum. It's packed full of good ingredients. I use it during my am routine and will continue for as long as the product is made. Definitely worth a try as a long term investment for your skin. I bought this after reading that this acid could hydrate better than HA, and at the time, my skin was seeming a bit dry using HA and moisturizer. I’ve been dealing with horrible skin (dryness, acne breakouts everywhere, hyperpigmentation) for a few months now, and I’ve been using this product the whole time. I didn’t always have such bad skin using it though. Then, when I ran out of it a few weeks ago, my skin cleared up. A lot. I used it for so long, and I didn’t think that could be a contributing factor, but now I’m led to believe that it perhaps played a part, as well as stress and terrible sleep. Finally, there is such little product in the package. I’ve bought like 3-4 of these vs one serum from The Ordinary that would require the same frequency and quantity each application. I bought this after seeing it be used on tiktok and I am so glad I did. I have dry skin that get oily without intense moisture. Typical HA wasn’t working well for me. Then I found this product and paired it with the inky list water cream. I use the polyglutamic acid and water cream after an active like aha or lactic acid and the combination of these three products have given me glass skin. I am convinced though that the polyglutamic acid is the game changer for me. My skin is thriving because of this product. I can’t recommend it enough for people with my skin type! I tested the @lorealparis Revitalift Triple Power LZR Anti Aging 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum. The applicator was very easy to use and I was able to apply the serum on the face without any issues. The serum itself was smooth on my skin, although I did feel some tackiness while it was still wet. As soon as it dried, the tackiness was gone and my skin felt nice and soft. My skin did feel more plump and moisturized. However, I feel like I would need to use it over a longer period of time to see any anti-aging benefits. I got a sample of this serum in a BeautyFix box. I have oily, acne-prone skin and I found this product to be slightly too heavy to use as a serum (under a moisturizer), but not softening enough to use in place of a moisturizer. (And by "too heavy," I don't mean that it leaves a residue; it doesn't, it actually absorbs completely. I mean that I can feel a bit of tightness on my skin's surface after application and I can still feel a slightly uncomfortable layer when I put a moisturizer on top.) So to use up the rest of the sample, I put this serum on right after cleansing (without my usual toner/essence underneath), and put on one of my more moisturizing sunscreens on top. This worked out okay, although my skin did get greasy more quickly with this routine than I'm used to with my usual routine. I am also not a fan of skincare products with perfume-y scents. So because of the product's scent and incompatibility with my skin type and preferences, I wouldn't recommend this serum unless you have normal-to-dry skin and don't mind perfume-y scents.Anonymous

I’ve been using this for well over two months and it does not work at all if you have any type of atopic dermatitis (eczema, psoriasis, etc). The first two or so weeks I used this it seemed to work pretty well, but after that it was terrible. If you have dehydrated skin, a skin condition that makes it dry like eczema, or both, I DO NOT RECOMMEND. It soaks into your skin in less than 60 seconds (I’m not kidding I timed it one day and it took about 20 seconds for it to completely disappear into my skin). Around my eyes especially is dry to the point it’s almost scaly, very flaky at times, and always looks red / wrinkly. (I’m only 18). This product is a waste of time and money. My moms been using it for a few weeks now and even though she has oily skin, it soaks in almost as fast for her as it does me. We both made the comment that it almost makes your skin feel dry because it soaks in too fast and leaves nothing behind to coat your skin and make it continue to feel hydrated. Trust me, I’ve tried every combination of products and order of using this in my skin care routine I could think of, and it seems to counteract every other moisturizer and hydrating product I use. It’s so bad I resorted to buying one of the bioderma chapsticks to use around my eyes and the driest parts of my face like around my eyes solely because I needed something to give me that terrible greasy feeling to keep my skin from hurting so bad I’d have to ice it. I like this product. It's very effective at cleansing and the feel during application on my skin is excellent. It leaves my face feeling soft and clean without being stripped of moisture. There are a couple of downsides for me: the packaging, which becomes difficult to pry open after a couple of uses and the lid feels quite flimsy, as if it's about to break off. The other downside is that it contains a fragrance which I find a bit overwhelming, I usually prefer my skincare products to be fragrance free. In the last two years I have been trying a number of hyaluronic acid serum brands. About a month ago I received a sample of Mineral 89 and I was instantly amazed with the results on my skin. There is seriously NO OTHER Hyaloronic acid serum like this…. I switch back and fourth at night with propolis and there’s suck. Big difference in the morning in the moisture level and appearance of my skin… it’s crazy. Some people say this is too scented which is insaine to me because all the fragrances are natural fragrance and this one in particular is extremely light and fresh, I honestly don’t smell anything exept freshness and I love it. I love finding such good products but at the same time I’ll never be able to use a different one because no others come close to the benefits of this serum. Immediately after using the product, I broke out on my cheeks. It felt like my skin was burning, too. I thought perhaps it was contact dermatitis with a blanket that had softener on it or something since softeners irritate my skin (albeit I never experienced burning sensations with softener), but after trying this product day & night for 2-3 days, I confirmed it was the serum. My skin is still recovering from the marks of using this product around December 16th. Thankfully it’s not too bad now. This product may be for you, but it wasn’t for me; it’s also the first Hyaluronic serum I’ve tried so I think I’m just going to stay away from those. subtly brightens skin because of the kakudu plum, something that isn't advertised but welcomed. a decent hyaluronic acid serum, can be sticky. best application is to apply it to a damp face, then allow a minute or 2 for the product to mesh with the water on the skin. then massage the product onto the skin until almost dry. and then spray face with a hydrator (water is fine). water another 2 minutes before massaging the product into the skin again and following with a moisturizer. i find that using an occlusive product (like a face oil) helps to reduce the stickyness. once the products have fully absorbed into the skin (which for me is about an hour) – skin looks bright and plump. it is a bit expensive for a brightening hyaluronic acid serum but it does work. it's also safe for fungal acne prone skin!kajalkumar

There’s no scent. It’s fast absorption. I love the ingredients and had not seen anything that is a powerhouse like this except the Purito green serum. As you can see, i used more than half the bottle already. This is my first time using a serum and I love it! Why? I have a combo acne skin and boy, it helped my oil production. I could probably say it helped me with my acne. Theyre not gone because i didnt incorporate any actives yet. I’m still in the process of analyzing my skin. I was horrified by the supermarket-bought ‘men’s skincare’ products he was using—even though they say ‘Sensitive Skin’, they are full of fragrances and alcohol and had virtually no high-quality active ingredients. I did my research and am really impressed by the Purito unscented range, which have non-irritating actives combined with barrier-building and soothing ingredients. I bought him this serum for daily use and the Recovery Cream to use at night and when his skin is more sensitive. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant (binds to water) and you're supposed to apply it to damp/wet skin after you've washed your face so that the hyaluronic acid binds to the water and clings onto it. Then, you use an emollient moisturizer on top of the hyaluronic acid serum to seal both the hyaluronic acid and water into your skin. It seriously makes a world of a difference if you follow these steps. Your skin will drink in the water, hyaluronic acid, and moisturizer. I like to follow up with an occlusive moisturizer as the "cherry on top" to minimize transepidermal water loss from my skin as much as possible because I have dry and dehydrated skin and prefer the "greasy face" that I affectionately call the "healthy skin" look. But, you don't need the occlusive moisturizer is you prefer a more natural skin finish and don't suffer from dehydrated skin. Honestly, if I could give this item 10 stars I would. Cheap, effective, minimal, and saved my dehydrated, dry, sensitive skin as it synergized with my skincare arsenal and made my skincare products much more effective. 100% recommend this product.adriana.a

I love this hyalauronic acid. I use this everyday morning and night! It makes my skin so tight! Once dry I do a sunscreen(in the morning) or a serum at night. The only thing I don’t love is the pump, it squirts out so much I almost have to catch it or it will go everywhere. There is so much in one squirt I can do my whole neck and chest too lol. This is a beautiful and hydrating layer in the routine, but it isn't as moisturizing as I might have expected. I do love it but even though I have combination skin I definitely need to apply a good cream over it, even when I do four or more layers of this. That's to be expected. The consistency is milky and soft, it applies and spreads easily, doesn't pill at all, doesn't irritate, and layers very nicely. The only downside of this is the dropper, the bulb is very small and the tube is large and the product is not very fluid, so you really have to get it out in several goes instead of just one. They could fix this by increasing the size of the bulb. It's not a real problem but something easy to improve.Michael O.

I've tried a few other PK products and loved all of them, but wasn't sure about this one. I expect serums to be liquid/runny but this one is pretty thick and milky white? The dropper is useless and I'm pretty sure it's too short to even reach the bottom of the tube, and it doesn't pick up or squirt any product. If it does, it shoots it everywhere. I honestly had to just dip it in and use the outside of the dropper to scrape the product off onto my finger and then apply. I'm not sure if it did anything for my skin, but I also didn't use it consistently enough to fairly test it. Like I said, it's more viscous, but it applies more smoothly like a liquid, soI think you could get a lot of coverage with little product.Irene

The consistency soaks right into your face and is amazing paired with other skincare products or makeup. It’s simply something you NEED to add to your collection. You can mix this in with a moisturizer, use with another serum, put on your lips, your eyes, your body moisturizer, your HAIR, your dried up makeup products, whatever you want girl! She does it all! Literally! My favorite uses: I love using this on my lips as a prep before lip balm or lipstick. I have also added this to the tips of my hair after swimming for extra moisturizer along with a leave in conditioner. When my ABH brow pomade was dry and gross, I added a drop and mixed it up. Now the product acts as if it’s brand new. Added it to my dry HUDA beauty foundation and created somewhat of a tinted moisturizer. When I had eye dermatitis I applied a little bit to help reduce the flaking and itchiness and it made them feel so much better! It’s safe for all skin types and has so many uses!!!!! If you’re oily, this would be great to balance out your skin and restore your moisture barrier!! Personally, I found this helped so much with my dry skin which btw, also suffers from eczema. I usually get very dry under my eyes and bottom lip and this did wonders for me. I found that after washing your face, it’s best to apply this when it’s damp. I found doing it this way helped my daily moisturizer stay on longer! It dries to this sorta tacky texture but nothing that’ll dry and stay flaky. At least that didn’t happen to me. My only complain is that the bottle is too small. Really wish they made a bigger version of it. I used this day and night and it only lasted about 2 months. Didn’t over use it but also wasn’t using pea size amounts like I was advised to. This serum is a GAME CHANGER. During the past few months of winter my skin had always become dry, flaky, and tight every time I would use my cleanser, especially in the forehead and sides of my nose. Even after using my moisturizer it still wasn't enough to keep those problems in check and I had to keep reapplying with no luck in controlling it whatsoever. Now after using the hyaluronic acid serum, my skin looks hydrated and PLUMP! The only area it hasn't worked on though are the sides of my nose cuz it's still dry and red, so idk if I might need to concentrate the product on that region more or maybe I just need to buy something else from The INKEY List that will help target that problem? First, it is a pleasure to apply – it is incredibly lightweight, smells amazing, and doesn’t dry out my skin. Just the scent alone is energizing. I received this serum as a #freeproduct for an honest review. First, I think it's important to point out that I have dry, sensitive skin and not the combo/oily skin the product is aimed towards. With that said, there are ingredients in this line of skincare that people like me just should not use frequently. For instance, this serum contains BHA, which increases sun sensitivity, so wearing sunscreen – although recommended – should be a MUST! The Vinopure serum comes in nice packaging, which I appreciate. However, there is no cap to cover the dispenser top, which leaves it open to collecting undetectable dust, dirt, and bacteria. Next, the product is "fragrance free," but the scent is extremely strong. It has peppermint oil in it, which causes the strong smell. In addition to the smell, the peppermint oil along with alcohol leave my skin feeling tight and tingly. For me, the product makes my skin bright red from the tingling, and certain ingredients. That said, to protect my sensitive skin, I didn't use these products twice a day, everyday, or else my skin sensitivity would increase tenfold. I cannot speak for those with combination to oily skin & who don't have sensitive skin, but for me, I don't think this is a product I would use as often as it's recommended. About a month ago, I walked into Sephora with plans to buy a spot treatment, but met an employee with the same type of skin as me. They convinced me to do away with spot treatments, and instead use a serum that will help eliminate my acne and also keep my skin looking young and smooth. Spot treatments tend to be too trying for my combo skin, so this serum was a great substitute. After a month, I already see a huge improvement in my skin. My acne has lessened, and my skin is nice and soft. I see a lot of reviews about this product giving people more breakouts, but that happens to me whenever I try a new skin product (it’s just our skin adjusting). I noticed a few white heads appear after my first few days of using this, but they were completely gone after a week. If this happens to you, I highly encourage you to give this product a chance and wait at least one week before writing it off. It’s so worth it!!AlyssaMarieR21

I'm really enjoying using the . It's a light weight serum that you can use in place of or underneath of your moisturizer ( I use it underneath). It has a really pleasant citrus-y scent that isn't strong or overwhelming, and it has a very nice consistency that isn't thick or tacky. You don't have to use much because a little bit definitely goes a long way, so this bottle has been lasting me a good while. It dries pretty quickly and absorbs well into your skin making it feel ultra soft and hydrated without being oily or greasy. My skin is naturally very oily and this serum hasn't made my skin more greasy or caused me to break out. I've been using it for a number of weeks now and I've slowly started to notice my skin starting to look and feel firmer and I've also noticed a difference in some of the fine lines and wrinkles in my face! For what this product does, the price is not bad at all. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to try a great serum to help with firmness and fine lines/wrinkles or anyone who just wants a great serum or moisturizer in general. Wow amazing product I feel like I have new skin that is hydrated and glows. I didn’t purchase but I received this as a free item and I would love to write a review about this because it is just amazing total game changer! I cannot understand why so many reviews note that this is sticky. I have used another popular serum from QVC which was a bit sticky but this one does not feel sticky to me at all. If anything, my skin feels softer. I also use it with the IT Cosmetics 'Confidence in a Cream', which for additional note, is a light creamy texture that goes on smoothly and feels good on the skin! I have normal/dry skin for reference. Also, I have used products in the past that have caused minor breakouts and not with this. This serum works wonders on even sensitive, irritated skin. I was a bit worried as my skin condition has been all over the place for a few months now (probably mean hormones soon turning 50, face masks, super dry cold weather…the dream team at work). I used to have very beautiful skin and it has turned into some red, acne prone, dry and sensitive mess. So, hoping for some miracle help, risked a vitamin C serum but was a bit worried it would be too harsh. This serum feels a tiny bit tingly for a few seconds – not as in painful rest assured – and then is fully absorbed and your skin is ready for your moisturizer. The results are visible pretty fast and I will update if need be but it feels like this is going to stay for a while in my skincare routine. The quality of the packaging and the product itself are really good. The box is not super glamorous and the bottle looks a bit like a medication but I don't mind since how my skin looks is what matters most.iHerb Customer

as somebody who struggled with cystic acne and has been left with hyperpigmentation, this product saved my skin. i have dry, acne-prone, and sensitive skin. this product is not harsh at all and is unscented. i had been looking for a good vitamin c serum, and i found it! for people who say they broke out after one use, after trying a new product, your skin will most likely purge depending on what you are trying! i say give it a chance and if you aren’t seeing a difference after one month, stop using it! i was already seeing a difference around 5 days into using this twice a day. totally recommend 🙂yay

I bought this product about a month ago and I use it at least once a day, sometimes twice. I started noticing a difference in my skin within a week! For the record, I have terrible skin. It's red, blotchy, uneven, and on top of that I would get terrible breakouts. I chose to post some before and after pictures because even though my skin is still not perfect this product has helped A LOT! It helped reduce the redness of my breakouts within a few days of using it and I'm convinced that it has also helped prevent more breakouts. This past month I've only had about 2 bad pimples (which is great for me since I used to get a new pimple every couple of days) but other than that my face has been doing great!maleniux.s

I have combo skin (oily t-zone and dry cheek area). Never normally have issues with reactions or allergies to products however this serum has really upset my skin. It has brought my face out in terrible texture that I’m struggling to repair; I normally have baby soft skin with a consistent skincare routine. Really disappointed in how this product has left my skin 🙁 I’m guessing it’s something to do with the fragrance aswell (which hasn’t happened before); the smell is so harsh! My headline says it all. I got the Super Serum trial size- 4 mL with one of my previous purchases. I've been using this serum for a week now since my regular Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum has run out. Pros: 1. Not sticky! I can't stand my face feeling tacky. (a reason why I usually use the sulwhasoo serum) 2. Hydrating – I use it right after my showers at night while my face is still damp but patted dry. It absorbs unlike the Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 I purchased late last year that pills on my face 3. I like the way it feels on my face – this point basically touches on both pts 1 and 2. Yes the second ingredient is Dimethicone which is a type of silicon which makes the formula feel good against the skin and helps to seal in the moisture onto the skin. (There are pros and cons of silicon – you just need to educate yourself) Cons: 1. The smell – DW it doesn't smell bad like hotdogs (like vitamin C serums). It just has this like herbal smell to it – I think it might be the witch hazel or the essential oils (see point 2 below). However, I enjoy the herbal smell of Sulwhasoo but this one isn't the same kind of herbal scent. 2. Contains essential oils (e.g., Flower oil, Lavendar Oil, Rosemary Leaf Oil) – TBH i like fragrance with my skincare products but I put this here for those whose skin is sensitive and would not benefit from it. Overall: Quite hydrating and I'm surprised at how nice it feels against my skin.graceyay

I have been using this for over a week now. I use it in the morning under my moisturiser, before applying makeup. I also use it at night before my moisturiser. I’m starting to notice my skin looks more refreshed & brighter. It’s more moisturised too but without any stickiness. I love this product so much I’ve purchased more products from Kiehls. The product packaging is simply luxurious. The bottle is glass and feels weighted like a perfume bottle.  While applying this product you’ll definitely feel fancy and luxurious. However, my problem with this product is the ingredients. I believe that Shiseido had a great vision while creating this product and it could have been a great product if they simply had not included a few ingredients. This product was not formulated for people who have dry or sensitive skin. If you look at the ingredients, alcohol is listed as the second ingredient after water. When you apply this product, the serum is initially smooth and hydrating. However, after wearing it for 20 minutes your skin will feel dehydrated because of the alcohol so overtime this product will not really leave your skin hydrated. The skin tightening effect that this product claims might even be due to the drying effects of alcohol. The product has a beautiful fragrance but the issue is that it has added fragrance at all. If you look at the ingredients list, fragrance is actually higher on the list than any of the good ingredients that you want for your skin.  This product will not work for people who have extremely dry or sensitive skin such as myself. Overall, I feel that this could have been a great product and I hope that Shiseido considers re-formulating the serum to not include alcohol or fragrance.lamia.a

I couldn’t wait to try this Ultimune Power Infusing Serum from Shisheido. First off, let’s talk about the packaging: the serum comes in a beautiful luxurious glass bottle. The nice thing is that this is refillable, you just hang onto the pump and cap, although the refills are still expensive, but it still cuts down on environmental waste. The serum itself has a slightly milky, runny gel texture to it, but it blends easily into my skin and absorbs quickly. It also has a nice perfume (citrus? floral?) scent, that’s not overpowering and doesn’t really linger. The one thing I do want to point out is that, as alcohol is unfortunately one of the main ingredients, I could smell it as I was applying – just a faint smell. Therefore I was not surprised that it seemed to be a little drying and tightened my skin. Again, this is a serum, not a moisturizer, so I wouldn’t expect that this would be super hydrating,and it is a very lightweight serum that plays well with my moisturizer. I haven’t noticed a profound difference as far as diminished wrinkles, but my complexion is more radiant and firm. I’m on the fence with this serum, only because for it being high end there shouldn’t be alcohol in it.cindy.m

I was excited when I first received this serum in my mailbox. I had never before tried any Shiseido products before and was ready! Since this was a serum, I decided to replace my current serum in my skincare routine with this one to see its full effect! I have been using it for about three weeks to date now. First impressions was packaging and the information presented about the product. The packaging was very pretty and looked very high end. It appears to be a glass bottle with sort of a reddish pink ombre look and a large plastic cap that is reflective and metallic. The product dispenses from a pump once the cap is taken off and the bottle fits nicely in the hands. The product itself is said to strengthen skin and resist damage. According to their research with use of this serum, skin is 28% stronger in just one week of consistent use of this serum. The serum is said to strengthen the skin's protective barrier while minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, features Reishi Mushroom and Iris Extract which are potent antioxidants that shield skin against that oxidative effects of stress, pollution, and urban life, and also hydrates skin intensely. Overall, first impressions were pretty good! The consistency of the product itself was like a thinner gel. Slightly runny and not very thick. It was an opaque white/clear color. And it smelled slightly floral and a bit perfumey, so there was definitely a fragrance to it. It had a nice slip to the skin and moved around the face nice. I used about 2-3 pumps of serum for my entire face daily. day and night in my routine. It did feel nice and very moisturizing on my skin, but it was a little tacky compared to my other serum. I felt that it took a bit longer to set into my skin than other serums I have used. It wasn't necessarily overly greasy or oily but it just took a while to sink into my skin, in my opinion. I also had to play around with my a moisturizer to pair with this. For that reason – as well as the scent – I decided to take off one star. Overall, I think it is a good serum. I do think it is intensely moisturizing and feels nice on the skin. I don't think I can really measure their claims of my skin being "stronger", so I can't really speak to that, but my skin did look smoother, brighter, and more moisturized. I would honestly buy a sample size if you wanted to try this since it is expensive. I think this serum would very much depend on your skin type since the tackiness of it and intensely moisturizing aspect of it. I noticed it didn't pair well with certain moisturizers because it would be a bit too much, especially in summer, so it may be too oily for certain skin types. This may be better suited for me in winter. I think it really just depends on your skin type, but I did enjoy it.alicia.h

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this product! I have combination/oily skin and do suffer from hormonal acne around especially my chin area. I can’t really speak for the one star reviews as this is simply an amazing product for an outstanding price. It could be the way they are applying (or misapplying) the product, could be skin allergies or sensitivities etc. and to that I say it is simply trial-and-error and finding out what works and what doesn’t. For me, when I find something that works well- I stick with it! I would really recommend at least giving this product a try, for this price it is a STEAL, I wouldn’t sleep on it. A few thousand five star reviews can’t all be wrong!

I have some fine lines and wrinkles, and after using this- it plumps those areas right up! No lie. My forehead wrinkles and fine lines practically vanish, and even deeper, more stubborn ones between my eyebrows fill out some! My skin just drinks this up. It is extremely thick and concentrated- a little bit of this goes a longggg way. I wouldn’t suggest just globbing or slathering this particular serum on.

It is very hydrating/plumping and the B5 helps immensely with irritation, so it is VERY nice to use on the same evenings that I have used products containing chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acids, AHA’s or BHA’s in general. It definitely calms my skin, and layering this serum with my AHA/BHA or retinols definitely prevents my skin from drying out or acting up afterwards, as those products can tend to be irritating.

How I use it at night: I first wash, exfoliate, gently pat my skin dry, and then tone my skin. The exfoliation and toning are a crucial step, and help to “prime” my skin to best absorb the serums and moisturizers to follow. I use a glycolic acid serum first, and allow it to dry down and absorb. Then, I apply a couple drops of this serum, again letting it dry down. Next, I apply Sunday Riley’s A+ High dose retinoid serum. Finally, I apply a small amount of a thick emollient cream (Like Farmacy’s Honey Halo). This product blends well with my other serums and creams and using it as a layer between my AHA’s and moisturizer keeps my skin from experiencing any intense side effects from the AHA’s.

During the daytime, under makeup this stuff is an excellent primer and has some grip. It also makes your skin look fabulously dewy and glowing. The key is to wash your face and tone. Then apply this and your moisturizer and let it all soak into your skin for 5-10 minutes before applying makeup.Leah Sell

I have very sensitive skin and have to be careful with the products I use. I get the odd hormonal spot here and there, but the main issue I have is with dull and tired looking skin. Also now I’m in my late 20s, I’ve started seeing lines in my forehead and a change in my skin. I’ve been using this for a week now and can already see a difference. Email the ordinary with a photo of your skin and your problem areas and they send a breakdown of the best skincare routine for you! Every skincare routine should be tailored to your specific skin type, but for someone with combination sensitive skin, this has worked perfectly for me. If you have the same skin type, this may work for you. But would suggest emailing the ordinary as they’re the experts. I’ve been using the ordinary squalane cleanser. If I’m wearing makeup, I always double cleanse. Then I dab my face with a towel a few times, so my face is still damp. Next I use the ordinary Nianamide 10% + zinc. After that, I use the natural moisturising factors + Ha from the ordinary. At night I do the same thing, but put the ordinary retinol 1% in squaline after the niacinamide and before the natural moisturiser factors. I don’t use retinol in the day as it attracts UV rays. I made the mistake of cleansing in the shower then following this routine. My face went really blotchy, so have just been following my routine when I get out the shower and haven’t had any issues. Probably just me though as my skin is really sensitive. I was really nervous using so many products on my face as I’m used to just cleansing and moisturising. But for someone with sensitive skin, I’d highly recommend the ordinary products!Lilly

Ok, maybe it's not something I should'nt Do, but I use it around my eyes and around my mouth. I then use the caffeine one around my eyes and seal everything with a peptides eyes-mouth cream. I was a bit self-conscious about my hollow eyes and I was starting to develop fine lines around my lips (barely noticeable, but boy was I not ready for it at 37) and it really plumped everything up within 2 weeks of use which really surprised me. Also, the first time I used their products I would breakout like crazy even after a 6 Weeks period. Then I decided to vive it a second shot and again started to breakout. But then, stupid me realized I was also scrubbing my face really harshly with a washcloth when washing and that was obviously the cause. I don't breakout anymore and I should mention I have acne prone, very sensitive skin. At first, I also found it made my skin feel very tight and my fine lines worst, but thanks to some review, I now apply it to damp skin which is a game changer. And that less is more. A few drops is enough. The 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wish the company would provide more detailed instructions like the damp skin thing which I learned through review. I've been plagued by sensitive/reactive/difficult skin for most of my adult life and received diagnoses that range from acne through peri-oral dermatitis to, most recently, rosacea. Even dermtologists don't seem to be sure what the problem is. Al I can definitely say is that azealic acid is great at calming things down. It's not miraculous: it has taken more than six months' of usage for me to see a marked improvement but, in my opinion, it works to reduce inflammation, smooth texture and even pigmentation. I apply it (generously) only at night because it is just one layer too many during the daytime, under sun protection cream and foundation. It may have a quicker effect for those who use for an entire 24 hours. For reference, I can't tolerate any form I've so far tried of retinolid but the azealic acid has never irritated my skin.. I use it in combination with niacinimide on spot-prone areas. A month agao I stopped taking the long term antibiotic I was prescribed for its anti-inflammatory rather than anti-microbial effect because it never worked very consistently or well on its own, and because I was worried about the side effects. The positive results from the azaelic acid have given me the confidence to bin the pills and – so far – my face is doing fine.Jeremiad

Did this help to lighten a new dark patch I've noticed on my upper cheek, or existing acne marks? Unfortunately it didn't. And that's unusual because I usually respond very well to Arbutin, even at 1% or less, yet for some reason not with The Ordinary's 2% formula. I did notice the tiniest bit of smoothness in my skin texture (the Lactic acid maybe) and my skin did feel lightly hydrated using just a few drops of this (possibly the Sodium Hyaluronate content) twice a day. But then I started to notice mild acne and clogged pores appearing on my chin and forehead after a weeks' use, and had to stop applying it to my face. I was hopeful that taking it down to just one application per day might lessen the issue but it didn't. Not one to waste something, I've been applying a couple of drops every night before sleep on my slightly dark, patchy underarms, after washing-off the days' anti-perspirant. I've been doing this for the last 3 and a half weeks but not seen any difference so far. To be fair I've yet to come across a product that does lighten them, even with multiple brightening ingredients in, not just Arbutin, so I can't say I'm exactly surprised. As a preface, I'm trying to cut out actives from my routine that are for proactive prevention, and am substituting those for actives that address problems I currently have with my skin as my skin is sensitive. I bought this and used it every day for a week when I started breaking out on my forehead, chin, and cheeks. Most of my acne is on my cheeks, but breaking out on my forehead and chin was new so I knew it was because of this product. I really want to love this since I know azelaic acid is good for both active acne and acne scars. I followed the instructions on the box and applied this after serums and before moisturizers. The only other active I use at the moment is niacinamide (and propolis, not sure if that counts as an active ingredient), see my routine below for more details. Any tips or suggestions from fellow acne-prone/sensitive skin people would be greatly appreciated!
