20 Best Serum For Skin Brightening (Jan 2023 Update)

This serum works wonders on even sensitive, irritated skin. I was a bit worried as my skin condition has been all over the place for a few months now (probably mean hormones soon turning 50, face masks, super dry cold weather…the dream team at work). I used to have very beautiful skin and it has turned into some red, acne prone, dry and sensitive mess. So, hoping for some miracle help, risked a vitamin C serum but was a bit worried it would be too harsh. This serum feels a tiny bit tingly for a few seconds – not as in painful rest assured – and then is fully absorbed and your skin is ready for your moisturizer. The results are visible pretty fast and I will update if need be but it feels like this is going to stay for a while in my skincare routine. The quality of the packaging and the product itself are really good. as somebody who struggled with cystic acne and has been left with hyperpigmentation, this product saved my skin. i have dry, acne-prone, and sensitive skin. this product is not harsh at all and is unscented. i had been looking for a good vitamin c serum, and i found it! for people who say they broke out after one use, after trying a new product, your skin will most likely purge depending on what you are trying! i say give it a chance and if you aren’t seeing a difference after one month, stop using it! i was already seeing a difference around 5 days into using this twice a day. totally recommend 🙂yay

I bought this product about a month ago and I use it at least once a day, sometimes twice. I started noticing a difference in my skin within a week! For the record, I have terrible skin. It's red, blotchy, uneven, and on top of that I would get terrible breakouts. I chose to post some before and after pictures because even though my skin is still not perfect this product has helped A LOT! It helped reduce the redness of my breakouts within a few days of using it and I'm convinced that it has also helped prevent more breakouts. This past month I've only had about 2 bad pimples (which is great for me since I used to get a new pimple every couple of days) but other than that my face has been doing great!maleniux.s

I have to say the reviews surprised me. I've been using this serum with my routine for 3 weeks now and can only say good things. My skin is very dry and dehydrated. I'm in my 40s with some old sun damage and fine lines and my goal was to help heal my pregnancy melasma and help texture and lines. I use a korean essense first, followed by this niacinamide serum, vitamin c serum, a moisturizing ceramide toner and a moisturizing sunscreen every day and use a peptide-cerimide mousurizer unstead of sunscreen at night. The only thing I changed 3 weeks ago was switching out my old hyaluronic acid serum for this product. My skin is glowing. Im noticing a slow decrease in the extra texture and "patchiness" and keep getting complimented by friends who see it too. I saw a change after my 2nd time.

I layer a lot of products, although I mist between layers to help it soak in. Im my case I need all that moisture, and for my dry middle aged skin this has been great. Reading the reviews though I wont be trying it on my boyfriend who has rosacea… Eek!Tara Klang

I too have fallen for the Niacinamide fad that had happened on Insta and have tried my share of different Niacinamide serums. The @naturium serum is by far my favorite stand alone Niacinamide product. It checks off everything in the box, high percentage, formulated with Zinc, works well with layering. It shows a visible difference in my skin when used consistently. The other ingredients include, Propanediol, Glycerin, Zinc PCA, Vitamin E, by and Sodium Hyaluronate. Zinc is supposedly an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and regulates oil. It also shows to protect and aid in wound healing and regeneration. This is why Zinc Oxide is so often found in high performing sunscreens, as it can reflect the sun and it creates a barrier between the skin and any damaging UV rays. The serum feels hydrating, non-sticky, and has very light creamy/gel texture. The serum absorbs into the skin nicely and helps reduce some of my dark spots and provides a nice glow. I have tried several different vitamin C serums, and Obagi is really different from the other options out there. I have been using the Obagi 15% for about 6-7 months now. First, I can tell you the color is very, very pale yellow tinged. It also has a very distinct hint of orange scent. What makes it really different, is that I can actually feel it! I mix about 3 drops with 3-4 drops niacinamide serum and about 4 drops hyaluronic acid and squalane morning and night. After applying to clean skin, I notice a very light tingling sensation a few minutes later – nothing dramatic, just a very faint feel. But – that tells me it is doing it's job! My skin tone is very even and fresh looking, and I get compliments all the time. My friends have all raided my bathroom closet to see what I use, and they have all started the same routine!Felecia R

This is by far the best Vitamin C product I've ever used. My dull skin has become so radiant, bright, and so healthy looking. I use this every day before moisturizer and after cleansing. Nice fresh scent and the texture and consistency is very nice. It dries down beautifully on the skin with no residue or oily feeling. I have never had a complexion to brag about. That is until almost 4 years ago when I began a journey into the unknown with GoPure! I tried the Herbivore Nova Brightening Serum that I was gifted by Herbivore, in exchange for my honest review. First off, the packaging and color of this serum is so bright and fun! Nova Brightening Serum is made with a 15% Vitamin C & Tumeric blend, so it's perfect for those with dark spots, uneven skin tone or just want to help combat the signs of aging! The serum is really lightweight and seems to just melt right into your skin. I bought this product when I went to visit Sephora with a friend, and this was recommended to me by one of the employees there to fix my reddened cheeks and complexion (I wanted something to brighten/whiten me out evenly). I hesitated on buying it since it was more expensive than products I usually try out, but I find myself liking how it feels after some weeks on it. It definitely has some smell at first (tumeric) and it's important to clean the place where it's pumped out with a finger (may leave some residue), but it absorbs near instantly into the skin and doesn't feel tacky, gooey, or oily like some serums I tried. For something which seems to have a sort of thicker consistency and its vibrant color, it really is a product which just instantly blends and absorbs into the skin and I really like it. And idk if it's me, but I feel my face is kind of prettier, and I definitely have less rosier/reddened cheeks. Main complaint is that it's really, really expensive, or at least more expensive than what I would've liked my serums to be since I'm not that rich oof. I got a pretty generously sized sample of this in an order a few weeks ago, and after finishing it I decided to buy the full size. For reference, I have very fair, oily, somewhat sensitive, acne-prone skin with mild rosacea. First, let me address the scent. Yes, it smells like turmeric because it contains turmeric (duh). I knew what I was getting so I wasn’t bothered by the smell. I also think the scent is pretty mild and it doesn’t linger. If you don’t like the smell of turmeric or have never smelled it before, this might not be for you. Personally, I was interested in this product largely because of the included turmeric. I struggle with skin redness and the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric can help with that. It’s also supposedly good for acne. So far, I really like this serum. I’ve been using it for the past couple of weeks as part of my morning skincare routine. It’s moisturizing and spreads over the skin easily. It’s a gentle formula that hasn’t caused any irritation or breakouts. It doesn’t make me greasy, but I find it gives me a really healthy glow upon application. I have a bad habit of picking at pimples and my acne marks take forever to fade, but I do feel like this is helping speed up that process. I've been struggling with acne and mainly acne scars for about 3 years now. I've tried different kinds of medication, different kinds of skincare products and so many other methods, and nothing worked. I wouldn't say this magically cleared my skin up, but it did help my acne scars fade a lot more. I saw the dermatologist at the beginning of the pictures, and somehow it made my skin worse and hurt a lot. I decided to stop seeing the dermatologist and started using this instead. let me start by saying I've had a very troubled skin since i was a kid which leaves me with very scarred face, full of red, purple and brown marks which take months or years to fade (despite using various products, hydrating cleansing exfoliating, you name it). My skin is combo and a bit acne prone. I have been using this serum for about two weeks now and it has worked great. It is moisturizing enough for my skin, I don't know how it will work for someone with dry skin. The good thing is that you can layer it. The consistency isn't too thick and it isn't watery. It does not have a strong scent. I think this would be ideal for someone with sensitive skin. It has brightened my complexion a bit and so far it has not made me breakout. It has worked great, although it is not my favorite. For the price I think they're a few less expensive options that work the same or slightly better. However it depends on your skin too. If your skin is sensitive this would be perfect. I don't think the Vita C % is too high. Which can be good because it won't hurt your skin but you will have to use it longer to see results. So far so good, I will continue to use it until it finishes but I am not too sure about rebuying since it is a bit pricey. But in this case a little does go a long way. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this Vitamin C serum. First of all, the texture is amazing. It is a very lightweight serum that absorbs quickly. I never get any tingling or burning sensation and there is no detectable scent. Most Vitamin C serums feel tight and dry on my mature skin but Skin & Lab Vitamin C Brightening Serum left my face hydrated, plump and moisturized underneath my longwear foundation. I also love how compatible the serum is with my other skincare products. My old acne spots and hyperpigmentation started fading after 8 weeks of consistent use but did nothing for my age spots. If you're looking for a non irritating, lightweight, easily abrorbed vitamin c serum look no further! This was a joy to use and I feel like every skin type can use this! I'm not overly loyal to particular brands, but am rigid in my skincare routine, which includes cleanse, exfoliation of some degree, an eye treatment, serum, moisturizer, and at night I finish off with a face oil. I tried this one on a whim, since I love many Ordinary products and this seemed to be comparable and is a great price. I do like it, but my initial impression (as feared) was that it was not emollient enough. Like many products I try (and I try alot, as mentioned above I am routine rigid but not brand loyal) , when i used the few drops of this serum as indicated in the directions, I end up pulling and tugging my skin to get it spread all around my face. My skin isn't dry or anything, but I find myself using nearly a half or three quarters of a dropper full in order to get enough on my face to evenly and sufficiently spread around. Not a deal breaker at all, but just felt worth mentioning if you are like me and are really drawn to very emollient, rich products. I have only been using it a week and am so far happy with it, although I don't see any noticeable improvement that's not a concern to me since I am more looking for and expecting a product to maintain and preserve my already healthy looking skin. I honestly love using this product. I'm giving it two stars because there's not enough product in the bottle. The shipping with this company takes up to 4 weeks and each bottle only lasts 3 to 4 weeks if used correctly. So if I want to constantly have this product on hand I have to continously order it 1 to 2 weeks in advance. To me thats unexceptable when there's other competitors with products that also offer low prices with quality ingredients. I love my results. I am achieving my goal of fading the melasma spot over my lip. It’s been so frustrating and I’ve been dealing with it for years. From the time of my review, I have been using this product for 16 days. I received this product and a Vitamin C serum for free from Influenster in exchange for my review. I use the microdermabrasion scrub every 2-3 days and the vitamin C twice daily. I do not use any other products except a face wash and moisturizer. First: if you suffer from Melasma, you need to wear mineral sunscreen. I’ve used other products to get rid of this condition successfully and it kept returning because I failed to wear physical sunscreen. I discovered this fact during this review period and began using it about 8 days ago. It has made a huge difference, as I’m in Arizona and the sun is just blazing here. I saw greater improvement once I added the mineral sunscreen. I’m not sure which one is making a bigger difference in my skin but my melasma is fading above the lip and there is an overall brightness to my complexion that wasn’t there before. When you apply this over the microdermabrasion scrub it does tingle but it tells me that it’s working. Be careful mixing with other actives. This stuff is strong. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this product has completely transformed my skin. Since I was a teenager, I would suffer from acne and redness, mostly lots of small bumps (closed comedones) all over my forehead and around my nose. I've tried all sorts of products – lots of strong, drying cleansers, topical treatments, various exfoliators, but honestly just accepted that my skin wouldn't budge. After a few weeks of using this serum, my acne was significantly better. I've used this product twice a day for over a year, and I rarely get acne now, only small red splotches that often vanish overnight. My typical routine now is super simple and basically the same 2x a day; just the Cerave renewing SA cleanser, this TO Niacinamide, then a moisturizer & spf in the AM. I try to exfoliate twice a week, but even in weeks where I fall off this habit, my skin stays clear thanks to this serum. I almost never write reviews for products, but am writing this now so anyone with similar skin issues to me can give this serum a try! This serum has been an almost-miracle product for my sensitive, redness-prone, blemish-prone skin. My only qualm with it is that it SERIOUSLY STINGS if you apply it to any active breakouts or broken skin. My skin was in seriously terrible condition due to a Lupus flare and hormonal acne, but after everything healed, I have been able to use this without irritation, following it with the Hyaluronic Acid/B5 serum, Pycnogenol, and Marula Oil (or moisturizing factor lotion). It really has transformed the texture of my skin, to a more noticeable degree than most of The Ordinary's other products (besides the Alpha Lipoic Acid serum, which I miss so much). My pores are refined, especially on my forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks on either side of my nose. Once prone to being easily-inflamed, sensitive areas of my face are no longer red, and now look more smooth. Oily patches, especially my nose, are less-oily. I have fewer clogged pores and blackheads, and less blemishes from irritation. I purchased the 2oz bottle from The Ordinary's website, since I apply this to my chest, upper arms, and back as well, as I sometimes have breakouts from malassezia. It also quickly fades the purple/red post-blemish marks on my very fair skin. It does make my skin feel drier and tight if I don't moisturize thoroughly afterwards, especially during this part of the winter, so keep that in mind. The price also makes it easier to use it liberally where ever I need it. Other than the stinging, it's a fantastic serum for my very high-maintenance, 30-year-old skin.arh

I heard amazing things about this product and did some digging into all the great benefits niacinamide and zinc have for the skin, and it seemed like it would help target my main skin concerns! I was aware of the possibility that I may experience purging and that some people can have allergic reactions but it's incredibly rare to the point where many dermatologists will assume its not an allergy to niacinamide, rather another ingredient present in the product that the person reacted to. I knew niacinamide was meant to help with the skin barrier as well as brightening and texture improvement, all things I struggle with. I did a bit more digging and noticed that the tested amounts shown to be effective and safe for the skin range between 2-5%. To be clear, I'm not saying 10% is bad or dangerous, it's just not as tried and true as that 2-5% range that's been studied many times. Like all new products, I did a 48 hour patch test on my arm as directed by The Ordinary's guidelines, and had no issues. Before starting my routine I used their (very helpful!) resource for when and how often to use specific products and to only introduce one new product at a time to prevent irritation/negative effects. What I'm a little upset about, is the lack of easily accessible information about how this product can cause irritation (among other negative effects) for people with non-oily skin. After about a week of use (3 drops for face and neck), my cheeks became hard like rough leather… I also felt a burning sensation after each use, but really wanted to give it a chance and went back to the basics (cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen) and I still had issues and my skin continued to harden and dry up. I was frustrated and confused because I couldn't find answers as to why I was having such a strange reaction anytime I used this product. Eventually, after much digging, I discovered that this should not be used by those with dry skin, especially at such a high concentration of 10%. I still stand by niacinamide and zinc as skincare ingredients, they are excellent for your skins health and have really helped many people in their skincare journey. This can be a great option for those struggling with acne prone skin and textural irregularities (if you have an oilier skin type). I'm here because I don't want other people with similar skin types to mine to buy this and feel lost or confused if they have a bad reaction. It's not that your skin is being ridiculous or difficult, it just may be that the concentration is too high, or that niacinamide may not be something you use as an active/solo-ingredient in your daily/weekly skincare routine. I challenge The Ordinary to include a section under this product outlining that if you have dry skin, that this product may cause issues, or better yet, offer a niacinamide product formulated for people with dry and/or sensitive skin to increase inclusivity. All in all, I hope whoever chooses to read this lengthy review, that you feel more informed and empowered to make a confident decision for yourself. By no means do I dislike The Ordinary, I LOVE all the other products I have from them! I just wish I had been advised about the potential issues if you don't have more of an oily/combo skin type.MMB

CE Ferulic is a beautiful serum. Amongst other ascorbic acid serums, CE Ferulic is pleasant to use, despite also having a hot dog water smell (standard for ascorbic acid) it is subtle and bearable compared to other products. CE Ferulic is also very moisturising on my skin. It is even okay to use on its own without moisturiser sometimes. CE Ferulic gives my skin great luminosity and radiance. However, it does not have an impact on pigmentation (by this point in time I have used Skinceutical's vitamin C serum continuously for around 12 weeks). I see CE Ferulic as more of a maintenance serum rather than a life-changing serum. It did provide a good luminosity to my skin, however it certainly did not have the same wow factor as compared to, say for example, Skinceutical's Silymarin CF. However, for a good maintenance serum I think $233 is overpriced compared to what is otherwise available in the market. I am also not sure why, with this hefty price tag, the serum does not come in an airless pump and opaque bottle given that ascorbic acid is so prone to oxidising. I am not really enjoying the dropper bottle format but I have been storing this in the dark in my drawer and wrapped in foil. It has not oxidised. Overall, yes I would purchase but only as part of a bundle and/or with gift with purchase.BELL A.

This is a long review to say that I don't use very many products, but this one serum, C E Ferulic, is a product that truly makes a difference for me. I know I bought this product two months ago but did not start using this until two weeks ago. First reason I got this is because there was a mentioned about helping to lighten dark spots on face. I saw other reviews about the bottle leaking but decided to give this a go since sometimes bottles leak and it can just be bad luck. At first it was fine but I put it in my bag to visit my sister and it leaked, only a wee bit but this seemed to "break the seal". Ever since it leaks every time I use it, the bottle is covered in the serum which goes thick and sticky as it evaporates and it's just messy. It also doesn't give the full amount on the first pump so I have to use a second which leaves me with too much even applying it to my neck and chest. The product itself is OK. It's very light, best way I can describe it is watery, so layers well with other skincare. I've not noticed any particular difference. I‘m kind of new to all of this and I’m glad I stumbled upon this little gem. Since I’ve began incorporating inkey into my skin care routine I notice a drastic improvement in my skin appearance. Almost 40, I still struggle with acne/breakouts, dark spots, fine lines, and a sensitive skin, that doesn’t tolerate acids very well, and retinols only in very low dosages. Since I’m using more than just this one product I cannot pinpoint the positive results to this one, but my dark spots are almost non existing, my acne almost cleared up and for the first time in my entire life my skin feels plump, hydrated, and happy. And looks just really really good. The texture is rather liquid, and the serum sinks into my skin very well and quickly, without leaving a “visible layer”. So proceeding with another thicker serum or moisturizer is really easy. It’s fragrance free (something I appreciate very much!) and doesn’t irritate my skin. 10/10 Do I still have acne scars and texture? Absolutely! I enjoyed using the serum for the past couple of weeks. Have not been using it every day, as it appears to conflict with my beach sunscreen and gives horrible burning sensation is layed under. But with my previous sunscreen was a great match, the serum absorbed quite nicely and wasn't tacky. Overall I noticed a brightening effect, as if my face kinda shines from within. I have been a huge fan of the Lightning Wand for spot treating hyperpigmentation/dark spots left by acne. But lately, with maskne especially, I have been going through my Lightning Wand so quickly. Absolutely love these! I don't really have issues with dark spots on my face, and instead use this product primarily on my armpits and inner thighs where my skin has more discoloration. The pads themselves are a nice size and texture (slightly larger and sturdier than other pads of this type I've used before) and there is enough liquid in the container that they don't dry out (which is another issue I've had when using this type of product from other brands). Living in Arizona in the summer has its challenges when you think about your skincare regimen. An absolute game changer. This is my first real serum that I have ever consistently used (as in twice daily) and have had zero issues with. It is super light and watery which my clog/acne-prone skin LOVES – it absorbs so fast you almost can't spread it quick enough if your skin is thirsty. You may think it isn't doing anything but trust me, it is. I use Tretinoin 0.1% every evening so after washing my face my skin is typically pretty taut. Once I apply this serum it instantly plumps up and my pores shrink. If I had normal or combination skin I could almost get away with using this alone as a moisturizer – it's that good. The amount you apply to the neck probably varies from person to person. I was applying the same amount to my neck and I'm fairly certain it was causing clogged pores, light cystic acne, and just exacerbating potential ingrown hairs from trimming my facial hair. After I stopped using it entirely on my neck and gradually reintroducing it the problem pretty much solved itself. I have noticed if I even slightly over apply it to my neck there will be a small "film" over the application area when I wash my neck. My oily skin keeps my neck pretty hydrated and really doesn't need a ton of help. Just a little will help over time with antiaging I hope. Deserves 5 stars regardless.Adrian D.

A very lightweight serum that felt luxurious to use! It helped keep my skin lovely supple and soft. I get stressed about trying new products sometimes – especially american products as I'm largely korean skincare-based – since I can break out easily with the wrong ingredients. I priginally bought it for the anti-aging properties, which I think it must have done its job since I'm still pretty pleased with my face. Im only 28 so not wrinkly by any means but for wrinkle prevention I do believe it's a good addition to a routine. However I do also get microneedling done and use tretinoin. I adore this offering from Elemis, since I got the whole kit to test for honest review I've been purchasing every month. The texture is rather creamy not watery like most serums but that doesn't effect its magic effect. The smells divine and the pump action bottle is easy to apply the desired amount and massage into the skin, leaving a lovely glowing look. Added to the day, night cream, neck and deleconte cream and the face mask these products are immense. My best advice is dont just purchase one, purchase the whole collectionalyssa.s

I noticed the difference it does to the lines on my forehead. I have been using it for about a month now, normally only in the evenings. I use a pea-size amount on my face and another pea-size amount on my neck. My skin feels more plump from below the skin and the pores have also smoothed out a tiny bit.
