20 Best Serums For Even Skin Tone (Jan 2023 Update)

I hate to give this a 1 star because it actually works. It doesn’t break my skin out or burn, and it actually evened out my skin tone and made it smoother. Why the negative review then? I can not in all good conscience recommended this to anyone I know or a stranger because the price per portion is absolutely insane. $24 for 0.5oz?!! That’s ridiculous, and the larger one is even a higher mark up. The Ordinary makes an equally great one for 1.0oz and it’s like $16. Change the price or make it bigger. Until then I will not be repurchasing or recommending.Heather

I read reviews before purchasing this product and read that it smelled awful, but I thought it couldn’t possibly be that bad. No, it’s terrible. So bad that the first time applying it I nearly threw up about 3 times with it sitting on my face. HOWEVER, the applications after the first weren’t bad at all and I was used to it. I promise after the first run it’s not bad and it’s completely worth your time. This product makes my skin glow for real. I’ve only experienced a very small purge that was literally nothing compared to how my face reacts to other skincare products typically. I could see a difference after a few days of application twice a day and my skin is already looking so smooth and more even toned. First the packaging is very cathy because of the light blue boxing and labels. This is a different type of drops bottle that I've seen before. Very wide enough for more product. And made of glass. Directions were well easy to understand as well as the ingredients etc. The dropper is made of glass as well and holds a lot of product when using. I apply this serum twice a week in my morning and night skincare routine after cleaningand toner. The scent is very very much citrus and just like squeezed oranges. The texture is runny so be careful! But thickens up a bit when rubbed in. Glides on pretty well and not too oily. I would recommend using sparsely you don't want to be super moisturized. You can definitely notice right away the moisture from this serum. My skin feels very hydrated, soft and breathable. No hars scents, over drying, oiliness nor breakouts. I have hopes to notice my dark spots disappearing soon but we shall see in due time. Overall, I believe this serum can be a game changer for me. This is a nice serum. I only use it at night time, but have noticed a difference since I started adding it to my nighttime routine. When I wake up in the morning I notice that old spots have gone down and my overall skin texture has started to smooth out. My skin just looks bright in the morning compared to dull and just blah without this in my routine. I also use this on my neck at night. My neck had two discolored lines and they’ve gone down and overall smoothed out. The texture on my neck has dramatically smoothed out and I think a lot has to do with this serum. I use the brightening toner in the morning and this serum at night. I don’t put any other stuff on my neck other than my cleanser and moisturizer so I know my results are mainly from adding niacinamide. My neck looks like more of a match to my face, and when you’re aging like me matching my neck to my face is a good thing. Before I incorporated this to my routine my neck started showing pretty decent signs of aging. It was also discolored from left over tans in the past. So it helped make things more even. I wish I’d taken before photos to compare. Always cleansed and moisturised my skin with decent quality products but in January my skin was making me look old, it was dull and I was constantly battling texture, clogged pores on nose and build up of rough surface layer that looked dreadful under makeup. Now use a range of good molecules products and my skin looks smoother, brighter and more youthful. I’m not needing to rely on harsh physical exfoliants either. Started with niacinamide and once I knew my skin tolerates it I added the gentle retinol cream. These both improved my skin, recently added the pineapple exfoliating powder and vitamin C powder which further improved my skin. Squalane oil is nice to layer on afterwards to soothe skin. Does require research/reading info to check which products you can use together though but totally worth it.CC

I'm very weary about trying out new skincare products after having dealt with hormonal and cystic acne from the ages of 16-20. By 20, I received a medical diagnosis that explained why my skin got the way it got, and with treatment for said diagnosis, my skin has been doing really well ever since. I have been left with acne scars (ice pick scars) that have smoothed out naturally over time and lots of aloe vera, but was ready to try something new. THIS PRODUCT completely changed the game for me!! My skin was smooth the NEXT day, and using it twice a day as instructed made a very noticeable difference after four days of use. It does tingle/burn when you apply it to open wounds or freshly popped acne, but the scar lets up and is gone by the morning. Wonderful product. I couldn't recommend it more 🙂ayanna_99

Bought this for my acne hyperpigmentation after seeing all the great reviews. I have hormonal acne which usually means that I break out on a monthly based around that time of the month. However, I got prescribed medication for this earlier this year and I barely every break out anymore. So I introduced this serum into my skincare now that it's clearer to start working on those marks. I first tried this for about 3 weeks and was breaking out constantly so I gave it a break and thought maybe it's another serum I started around the same time. So I waited a month to try this again and I put some twice in a row at night only and woke up with crazy acne. I literally take medication that internally controls my acne so I knew what I had used externally was the problem. Not sure what it is with the serum but it was the culprit of my random breakouts. I wish it had worked for me but I couldn't try it long enough, I don't have the time to deal with bumps right now and don't really want new scarring either.Nicolep

This is an update to my review in August. My first bottle was purchased in June of 2021. I had EXTREMELY bad hyperpigmentation. When I used the combo of the Niacinamide toner and this serum, in 6-8 weeks, my skin was completely cleared up. After the serum was gone, I used the toner a few times a week, because it was all I needed with my clear skin. I’m a picker when I’m under stress, so I purchased another set last month and I knew after a few weeks, something was definitely different. The results weren’t the same. I know this formula has changed. I’m sure you don’t care, but this was the first serum that I found that worked for African American dark skin. Reading some of the reviews, I’m quite sure that you don’t listen to your customers, as I see plenty have stated that they’ve experienced minimal results and you haven’t changed it back to the original formula. Although the claim by the company is that you’ve improved the formula, you didn’t. Sometimes, stronger isn’t better, especially when there’s a breakdown in the quality of this new formulation. This has been one of the best serums I have ever used on my skin!! I have a history of horrific acne, and as it’s been clearing up, this has been a game changer for my routine. With consistent use, I see results within weeks, and this is coming from someone who has tried EVERYTHING. I dermarolled, got frequency facials, changed my diet, took tons of supplements, natural facials, all kinds of chemical facials, and have used countless products for treating my acne and the hyperpigmentation scars left behind, and nothing has worked as well as this has for me. If you’re hesitant, just give it a try (and give it time to work)! Acne is so frustrating already, and even worse what it leaves behind, so be patient, show your skin some TLC, cut down on the number of products you use and just focus on the basics. I saw the biggest changes in my skin when I did this. My best routine is using a cleansing face wash like Vanicream (with no actives like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide), a simple hydrating serum like Hyaluronic acid or moisturizer (no actives) and adding the serum on top or a product with actives to target the problems. I have to say the reviews surprised me. I've been using this serum with my routine for 3 weeks now and can only say good things. My skin is very dry and dehydrated. I'm in my 40s with some old sun damage and fine lines and my goal was to help heal my pregnancy melasma and help texture and lines. I use a korean essense first, followed by this niacinamide serum, vitamin c serum, a moisturizing ceramide toner and a moisturizing sunscreen every day and use a peptide-cerimide mousurizer unstead of sunscreen at night. The only thing I changed 3 weeks ago was switching out my old hyaluronic acid serum for this product. My skin is glowing. Im noticing a slow decrease in the extra texture and "patchiness" and keep getting complimented by friends who see it too. I saw a change after my 2nd time.

I layer a lot of products, although I mist between layers to help it soak in. Im my case I need all that moisture, and for my dry middle aged skin this has been great. Reading the reviews though I wont be trying it on my boyfriend who has rosacea… Eek!Tara Klang

I too have fallen for the Niacinamide fad that had happened on Insta and have tried my share of different Niacinamide serums. The @naturium serum is by far my favorite stand alone Niacinamide product. It checks off everything in the box, high percentage, formulated with Zinc, works well with layering. It shows a visible difference in my skin when used consistently. The other ingredients include, Propanediol, Glycerin, Zinc PCA, Vitamin E, by and Sodium Hyaluronate. Zinc is supposedly an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and regulates oil. It also shows to protect and aid in wound healing and regeneration. This is why Zinc Oxide is so often found in high performing sunscreens, as it can reflect the sun and it creates a barrier between the skin and any damaging UV rays. The serum feels hydrating, non-sticky, and has very light creamy/gel texture. The serum absorbs into the skin nicely and helps reduce some of my dark spots and provides a nice glow. I've been struggling with acne and mainly acne scars for about 3 years now. I've tried different kinds of medication, different kinds of skincare products and so many other methods, and nothing worked. I wouldn't say this magically cleared my skin up, but it did help my acne scars fade a lot more. I saw the dermatologist at the beginning of the pictures, and somehow it made my skin worse and hurt a lot. I decided to stop seeing the dermatologist and started using this instead. I can't say that this would work for everyone because everyone's skin is different. But, this worked really well for me and I'm really I bought it. I really recommend it!Jessie

let me start by saying I've had a very troubled skin since i was a kid which leaves me with very scarred face, full of red, purple and brown marks which take months or years to fade (despite using various products, hydrating cleansing exfoliating, you name it). I have been religiously using this serum every day (once or twice a day, it depends) for two weeks now and oh boy, it works wonders! My dark ugly marks are starting to fade and new ones appear less agitated and heal much faster than they used to. This product has greatly helped brighten my skin overall, smooth out my skin texture, and get rid of or significantly lighten my post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. My skin always looks and feels amazing the morning after using it. I have sensitive skin, so I only use this 2-3 nights a week even though the bottle says to use nightly, and still saw great results from this serum. I also attribute this in part to the fact that exfoliating serums tend to be more gentle than exfoliating toners. If you're worried about the product pilling up, there could be a couple reasons why: (A) you're not giving enough time for products to sink in before going into the next one – find a balance between applying products to damp skin and applying them one right after the other, and/or (B) you could just be applying too many products to your skin.Katherine

I have some mild pigmentation related to sun exposure on upper cheek area that I have been having laser for and in between treatments have been using this 3-4x/ week at night for about 6 weeks. My pigmentation is definitely improved and given the time that salons have been closed I feel that this product has contributed. I am using in conjunction with either the AOS Niacinamide Pore Refining Booster or Medik8 Clarity Peptides and my skin is definitely brighter and more even toned with noticeable fading of the pigmentation. Please note you need to shake the product very well each time before you use. It is expensive and I only use a small amount of product at a time but the packaging makes it hard to see how much is left. For this reason it is 4 rather than 5 stars from me.BeautyStar

This product is AMAZING, BUT there is a caveat. Often times when I buy this product it seems spoiled, like how vitamin C can go bad if not kept correctly. The product should be a light orangey color, but when it's gone off it's a darker orange. I've used this for years and return it before I even walk out of the store most times because I know to check to see if it is bad/old/whatever is going on with it. If you do get a good bottle, you'll be writing a great review, trust me. But if I got my first bottle or two and it was sticky and smelled odd, and didn't do what others claimed it would, of course I would be skeptical too. 75% of the bottles I buy, whether Sephora or Ulta, are always bad. This is one of those products that you didn't know you needed until you try it. This is a very high quality serum that I received a sample of. My skin is mature with fine lines, very dry, and prone to acne breakouts. As instructed I placed three or four drops in my hand and applied it to my face. It easily spread over my skin and my skin absorbed it quickly and it left it feeling extremely smooth It even looked better after the first application. So far I really love what I'm seeing with this product. I applied a light nighttime moisturizer afterwards so far I have not broken out and my skin already looks a lot better. I am someone who takes care of their skin or at least I thought I was but this product may be something that I will add to my regimen. It contains some wonderful anti-aging properties such as vitamin c and retinol. I got this sample of Multi-Action Super-C Retinol Brighten and Correct Vitamin C Serum from @strivectin months ago I've been using it for over a couple of months, so now it's time to give my honest opinion. I'm usually incredibly sensitive to Retinol, so I was hesitant about trying this at first. It's actually very, very gentle. Idk the % of Retinol, but I did start off slowly. I used it 2X a week, then built up to 3-4X a week. I do feel a slight warming sensation after applying it, but it does go away after about 5 min or less. The serum has a strong scent to it, like a strong citrus type scent, but it does go away after about 2 mins. It's a thick, orange serum that will feel tacky at first, but it does absorb into your skin. I put on toner first, then this serum, then a thick, moisturizing cream to keep my skin calm. I have noticed a more even texture to my skin my skin just looks overall more healthy than it did before. I have quite a bit of serum left (you only need a drop or 2), so if any changes happen, I'll update. Note: I had absolutely NO purging, dryness or redness when using this serum. If you're not used to Retinol, start off slowly. 1-2X a week, then work your way up. I used this product for over a week twice a day before reviewing. I would also add that I am a huge skincare nerd and have just learned so much about ingredients. The one question I have about this product is the percentage of vitamin c – it is ascorbic acid which is a strong version but at what efficacy? I do love that from the second ingredient on we have lovely things for the skin like aloe! The packaging is refreshing for a 30ml serum – typically these are found in dropper bottles but you can never get every last drop. I like that it’s also refillable. My really only qualm is the price. For this price I want to know exact percentages of the vitamin c and niacinamide! I will say after a week of usage my skin is glowing and so soft!katiekatxxx

I received this product in exchange for this review. For more info, I have dry, dull skin. This serum has a lovely texture and I the products component. With it being airless it really helps the product maintain it's efficacy. And to the vitamin C in the niacinamide brightening my complexion, however, I found that it didn't really give me any results. I've been using it for two weeks and I didn't day and honestly haven't noticed any difference in my skin. However, it is a nice addition to my skin care routine and the serum helps my skin feel less dry so that's a plus for me I think for a different skin type the serum might be better, but I would say if you have dry skin with not much pigmentation issues you probably want something stronger. I was recently gifted Fenty Skin Watch Ya Tone Niacinamide Dark Spot Serum complimentary by Fenty Beauty and Bzzagent in exchange for my honest opinion. This was my first time trying Fenty Beauty product and I was not disappointed at all. I absolutely loved it. First thing first, the packaging of the serum is top notch. The serum has mily white texture. It is non sticky. It is light weight and it absorbs almost instantly in my skin. The serum contains Niacinamide, Vitamin C, Licorice Root Extract and Barbados Cherry which help reduce dark spots and boost overall brightness of the skin. Gleamin gifted me their Supercharged Balance Serum. When most serums say to use 1-2 pumps I end up using 4 or more because so little product comes out, but this serum pumps out true to size. This is a liquid serum and 1-2 pumps really is all that is needed for my full face and neck. It spreads wells and absorbs quickly. It is instantly hydrating and lasts throughout the day. With my dry skin I love that it helps improve the skin barrier. The ingredients and their benefits are amazing. I look forward to improved results with continued use. I received this product complimentary from Gleamin in exchange for an honest review, so here it is — this is actually the first time I’ve ever used a skincare product that contains both vitamin C and niacinamide in the same formulation, and I have to say I am impressed! I have dry/sensitive skin, so I was worried it might be too strong and leave my face red/irritated after application. It did not do this at all. I can’t really speak to the long-term benefits of using this serum (i.e. efficacy at reducing the appearance of wrinkles) as I have only been using this twice/day for the past couple weeks, however in the short-term, this fragrance-free, non-sticky/non-tacky, fast-absorbing serum does impart a nice healthy-looking glow within minutes after application. Since my skin is baseline incredibly dry, I find that I need to layer this serum under a moisturizer, although I bet oily skin types may even be fine without. From looking at the product formulation/ingredients alone, I would give this a 5/5 (clinically-proven actives + free of common irritants like synthetic fragrance, artificial dyes, heavy preservatives, useless fillers, etc). All in all, I plan on continuing to use this serum until it runs out, and plan on purchasing more/incorporating this into my regular skincare routine if it proves to be effective in the long term. This is my first product from gLeamin. and I like it! This serum has a thin gel consistency and a very slight earthy natural scent (no added fragrances). I don't need to use much and it absorbs well. It immediately feels soothing on my skin and my skin feels soft and hydrated. With continued use, I am beginning to see a little glow. It works well for my oily/combo skin but I think anyone will enjoy using this. I love the hygienic pump packaging which works well. The bottle looks fun and stylish, but as this contains Vitamin C I would prefer it in a darker packaging. The price point is good for the quality of the product.EMMA P.

I think this is a great product ! I’ve been using it for a few months now just at night, sometimes one night after the other or when I want to use other actives like BHA or retinol I’d use it every second night. I have stubborn pigmentation most likely from sun exposure in my teens but I think that this product is slowly helping them fade ! I will definitely repurchase because I do love how my skin is doing. I only really wear sunscreen and concealer now because overall my skin looks pretty damn glowy and no (or barely any) breakouts. I don’t expect a miracle product from any brand but there are products I notice more of a difference with and this happens to be one of them. 🙂 I will definitely repurchase because I appreciate that there are many different active ingredients in here that do all sorts of things, but overall seems really gentle! This is a MUST HAVE! As a person of colour who typically suffers from dark marks and hyperpigmentation I am very impressed just how quickly this product gets to work. I’ve owned this serum for under 2 weeks and my dark spots on my arms have almost disappeared or have significantly reduced in their darkness. This product does not dry the skin or affect my skin in anyway negatively which I was really surprised about as initially I was doubtful of the lactic acid but it works really well as an exfoliating ingredient brightening the skin. I have now started to use the serum in other areas such as the underarms and can already see that the hyperpigmentation in this area has improved. Also the price is affordable!F

This product really works. I've been searching for a serum that will even out areas of hyperpigmentation. I have left this review until I started my second bottle of serum, because it takes time to reduce the melanin. I am definitely seeing improvements in the dark pigmented areas that have been bothering me. My skin tone is more even now. It's also very gentle on sensitive skin. I reckon I will need to continue to use it ongoing, as I it will take a few months to fade out the darkest areas. But I'm convinced enough now to write an honest review. As my hormones have fluctuated, I've seen pigmentation in my skin become uneven in spots. I don't do a ton of chemicals on my face because I have sensitive skin and this cream seems to agree with my touchy face. I really love this dark spot corrector for several reasons. A little bit goes a long way. It has a lovely fragrance. It has a really nice feel and isn’t greasy at all. Sometimes when I wear a product in addition to a moisturizer, I wind up feeling that there’s a lot of stuff on my face, but this product is not like that. I very comfortably wear it and my moisturizer all day. And this product did not make me break out. This serum works wonders on even sensitive, irritated skin. I was a bit worried as my skin condition has been all over the place for a few months now (probably mean hormones soon turning 50, face masks, super dry cold weather…the dream team at work). I used to have very beautiful skin and it has turned into some red, acne prone, dry and sensitive mess. So, hoping for some miracle help, risked a vitamin C serum but was a bit worried it would be too harsh. This serum feels a tiny bit tingly for a few seconds – not as in painful rest assured – and then is fully absorbed and your skin is ready for your moisturizer. The results are visible pretty fast and I will update if need be but it feels like this is going to stay for a while in my skincare routine. I bought this product about a month ago and I use it at least once a day, sometimes twice. I started noticing a difference in my skin within a week! For the record, I have terrible skin. It's red, blotchy, uneven, and on top of that I would get terrible breakouts. I chose to post some before and after pictures because even though my skin is still not perfect this product has helped A LOT! It helped reduce the redness of my breakouts within a few days of using it and I'm convinced that it has also helped prevent more breakouts. This past month I've only had about 2 bad pimples (which is great for me since I used to get a new pimple every couple of days) but other than that my face has been doing great!maleniux.s

I've been using this consistently for about a month. I use it at night and alternate some of The Ordinary products. After washing my face, I let it fully dry. I put this on my entire face paying attention to some faint acne scarring that I have. I recently turned 40 and I've noticed this has improved the texture of my skin as well. Once dry, I use dermalogica moisturizer (the redness one) and my skin feels great. I've noticed an almost immediate fading of the scarring and like the improvement of my skin's texture as well. Can't beat the price! No irritation and no complaints. I would recommend! I have oily skin and have the beginning of fine lines and the occasional blemish.Crystald0215

I have never used a dark spot corrector before so I have nothing to compare it to but I do like the results, as well as my face I have used it on my décolletage, shoulders and the backs of my hands and my freckles and dark spots definitely look lighter. I have only been using it a couple of weeks so will keep using to see if it improves anymore. The only thing I don't like about the product is the smell, it smells like hotdog's and I hate them, but it will not put me off using it. I would definitely recommend it.carol d.

When I started this I had two inflammatory pimples on my face which left dark scars ,despite me not picking at them at all. I usually used this in the mornings along with sunscreen, which is highly recommended. From time to time I would use it in my night routine. My scars are almost completely gone. I know this is working because prior to me ever incorporating Vit C into my routine, my acne scars took forever to fade out. I do agree with others that it has a strange smell. To me it smells like the skin of a fruit; it's pretty tolerable in my opinion and it doesn't linger. I also agree with others that the pump needs work. Site recommends 2-3 pumps but I pump it at least 5 times because it doesn't always pump out enough serum. Overall, it's a great product and I would buy it again.Eileen

Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum is soo amazing. I felt like I noticed a radiance from within in days. Even when I would have break outs I was way more confident in my skin because it still looked healthier and vibrant thanks to this product! I would 100% recommend to anyone who wants a beautiful healthy glow and the feeling of happy healthy skin. That being said, my only issue is the packaging had some leaking issues. I usually store my skincare laying down so I realized that it leaked when it was horizontal. However after that I stored it vertically and it had no issue. It also did not cause it to oxidize, but I can’t help but feel like I may have lost out on product due to leaking. I’ve seen other people complain about this issue as well, while other people have no problem, so I’m hoping they will be able to figure it out since it is only a packaging issue rather than a problem with the product itself. Regardless I will be reordering but hoping that this time my bottle is well sealed! Pictures are taken first day using it, the following day, and then about a month later.Cristina F.

Enter in Timeless… a brand i hadn’t heard of but once I heard about it I realized it was everywhere! People really like this stuff! So I decided to try is in the smallest size available because it is so reasonably priced and had no known pore cloggers in it. I have been using it for week and can honestly say my skin looks radiant! I am 40 with oily, acne prone skin and this stuff is so light! It absorbs immediately and has no funky smell, no oily residue, no stinging burning sensation and absolutely no irritation and the price is incredible! I'm not exaggerating when I say that this product has completely transformed my skin. Since I was a teenager, I would suffer from acne and redness, mostly lots of small bumps (closed comedones) all over my forehead and around my nose. I've tried all sorts of products – lots of strong, drying cleansers, topical treatments, various exfoliators, but honestly just accepted that my skin wouldn't budge. After a few weeks of using this serum, my acne was significantly better. I've used this product twice a day for over a year, and I rarely get acne now, only small red splotches that often vanish overnight. My typical routine now is super simple and basically the same 2x a day; just the Cerave renewing SA cleanser, this TO Niacinamide, then a moisturizer & spf in the AM. I try to exfoliate twice a week, but even in weeks where I fall off this habit, my skin stays clear thanks to this serum. I almost never write reviews for products, but am writing this now so anyone with similar skin issues to me can give this serum a try! I had never tried other niacinamide products before this, so I imagine other niacinamide solutions would also work well for me – but this TO serum is so affordable, I don't plan on trying anything else any time soon.Jess

This serum has been an almost-miracle product for my sensitive, redness-prone, blemish-prone skin. My only qualm with it is that it SERIOUSLY STINGS if you apply it to any active breakouts or broken skin. My skin was in seriously terrible condition due to a Lupus flare and hormonal acne, but after everything healed, I have been able to use this without irritation, following it with the Hyaluronic Acid/B5 serum, Pycnogenol, and Marula Oil (or moisturizing factor lotion). It really has transformed the texture of my skin, to a more noticeable degree than most of The Ordinary's other products (besides the Alpha Lipoic Acid serum, which I miss so much). My pores are refined, especially on my forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks on either side of my nose. Once prone to being easily-inflamed, sensitive areas of my face are no longer red, and now look more smooth. Oily patches, especially my nose, are less-oily. I have fewer clogged pores and blackheads, and less blemishes from irritation. I purchased the 2oz bottle from The Ordinary's website, since I apply this to my chest, upper arms, and back as well, as I sometimes have breakouts from malassezia. It also quickly fades the purple/red post-blemish marks on my very fair skin. It does make my skin feel drier and tight if I don't moisturize thoroughly afterwards, especially during this part of the winter, so keep that in mind. The price also makes it easier to use it liberally where ever I need it. Other than the stinging, it's a fantastic serum for my very high-maintenance, 30-year-old skin.arh

I heard amazing things about this product and did some digging into all the great benefits niacinamide and zinc have for the skin, and it seemed like it would help target my main skin concerns! I was aware of the possibility that I may experience purging and that some people can have allergic reactions but it's incredibly rare to the point where many dermatologists will assume its not an allergy to niacinamide, rather another ingredient present in the product that the person reacted to. I knew niacinamide was meant to help with the skin barrier as well as brightening and texture improvement, all things I struggle with. I did a bit more digging and noticed that the tested amounts shown to be effective and safe for the skin range between 2-5%. To be clear, I'm not saying 10% is bad or dangerous, it's just not as tried and true as that 2-5% range that's been studied many times. Like all new products, I did a 48 hour patch test on my arm as directed by The Ordinary's guidelines, and had no issues. Before starting my routine I used their (very helpful!) resource for when and how often to use specific products and to only introduce one new product at a time to prevent irritation/negative effects. What I'm a little upset about, is the lack of easily accessible information about how this product can cause irritation (among other negative effects) for people with non-oily skin. After about a week of use (3 drops for face and neck), my cheeks became hard like rough leather… I also felt a burning sensation after each use, but really wanted to give it a chance and went back to the basics (cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen) and I still had issues and my skin continued to harden and dry up. I was frustrated and confused because I couldn't find answers as to why I was having such a strange reaction anytime I used this product. Eventually, after much digging, I discovered that this should not be used by those with dry skin, especially at such a high concentration of 10%. I still stand by niacinamide and zinc as skincare ingredients, they are excellent for your skins health and have really helped many people in their skincare journey. This can be a great option for those struggling with acne prone skin and textural irregularities (if you have an oilier skin type). I'm here because I don't want other people with similar skin types to mine to buy this and feel lost or confused if they have a bad reaction. It's not that your skin is being ridiculous or difficult, it just may be that the concentration is too high, or that niacinamide may not be something you use as an active/solo-ingredient in your daily/weekly skincare routine. I challenge The Ordinary to include a section under this product outlining that if you have dry skin, that this product may cause issues, or better yet, offer a niacinamide product formulated for people with dry and/or sensitive skin to increase inclusivity. All in all, I hope whoever chooses to read this lengthy review, that you feel more informed and empowered to make a confident decision for yourself. By no means do I dislike The Ordinary, I LOVE all the other products I have from them! I just wish I had been advised about the potential issues if you don't have more of an oily/combo skin type.MMB

I've used Augustinus, Vitner's, La Mer, Sturm, SK-II and other overpriced skincare products…and this has become my trusty moisturizer sidekick that doesn't make me think twice about if it's ever worth it. (such a great feeling) Such a solid go-to for me. I love love love this product. Squalane and I go well together, and I've been looking for a good brightening/vitamin C serum/oil. It's not greasy, absorbs quickly and makes my skin feels like it's ready for the day. Sometimes I just use this instead of a moisturizer. No overpowering scent is a plus. It has been 4 months since I started using Dark Spot. Something really amazing happened. Before I came to America, I lived in another country with less sunlight than here. I bought this product after seeing the spots and blemishes that were there at that time come back with a laser. When I first used it, I felt a tingling sensation, but now the irritation is less and the effect is really good, the color of the dots is blurred and almost invisible. That's amazing.Jinhee
