Best Shampoo For Greasy Thin Hair (2024 Update)

This conditioner is 10/10. I have tried “The One� conditioner and have also loved that one as well, but this one has different benefits. For one, it’s super light and not as thick as some conditioners, the slip is great. My hair used to look so dull if I didn’t wash it and now it looks shinier and feels super soft. My hair doesn’t feel heavy. The no fragrance makes a huge difference because I don’t have those extra unnecessary chemicals drying out my hair. One con for this is the bottle size. I should’ve bought a bigger bottle because of my thick hair I have to use a lot of product. The small bottle featured in the photo was between $10 and $13 and lasted me about 2 weeks. Overall I would definitely buy this again, just a bigger size.kell.p

I am not high maintenance at all when it comes to hair care. I prioritize my preference to skincare etc. After running out of shampoo I decided to try this one since I love the Kristin Ess texturizing spray. Biggest mistake! This formula literally caused my head and scalp to become insanely itchy and when you scratch, since the formula is so drying, your scalp gets flaky. It’s not dandruff, but looks like it because of all the flakes. I’m so disappointed with this product. I’m literally running to target tomorrow to find something else because I can’t possibly bear another wash. It’s that drying. Not to mention my hair looks way drier than usual and dull. I used this shampoo only once, and I could feel it making my hair a strange brittle texture as I washed it. I can generally wash my hair and not use conditioner, except for the first week after I get highlights. I could not even run my hands through my hair after washing. Needed to use a conditioner, and then still had trouble getting a brush through it. The bottom 2 inches of my hair remain unmaneageable since I used this product. Now I am forced to use conditioner just to brush through my hair after washing, even though I am using my previous shampoo. Very unhappy that it basically wrecked my hair. My husband, who has virgin hair, has no problem with the shampoo, but does use conditioner. The only reason I even tried this was because there is no scent. That is the only plus. I love the way it makes my hair feel when i lather the shampoo and conditioner in my hair. The texture gives it a nice thick scrub and while rinsing it smoothes out all snarls in my hair and leaves softness in each strand. It also smells wonderfully! This shampoo SAVED my hair. I’ve been using Native shampoo conditioner for about 6 months and I noticed my scalp start to have so much dandruff. It was REALLY bad. My hit also seemed really oily pretty quickly. At this point, it felt like I just couldn’t get it out no matter how long I rinsed. There was just lots of build up. This shampoo literally saved my hair. After one wash, it felt significantly better and actually clean. I paired it with the curl quench conditioner on my ends (even though I have straight hair) and use a little on my scalp and my hair looks and feels so much better. I honestly picked this because it was the cheapest clarifier I could find with a good amount of fl oz. I was comparing to other brands. This clarifier is very good and I am glad I picked it up. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do. This product will also last long since we should not be clarifying our hair often. I have curly hair with a kinky texture. The directions says to use a dime-quarter size amount and I would stick by that. I used a little more than quarter size and my hair/scalp was clean fast. I had such high hopes for this brand, and especially the shampoo. I love the way the bottle looks it's so cute in the blush color, and I've heard great things from so many people about that they love the shampoo. I hate it. I need a clarifying shampoo because once a week I put a ton of oil, and sometimes hair masks as well, on my hair. I'm trying to regrow my hair, a little bit over a year ago I was completely bald, so I use mostly biotin and Castor oils. My regular shampoo washes them out pretty well, as well as my cheap drugstore shampoo, even it washes the oils out okay. I just wanted a clarifying shampoo for these weekly hair oil treatments. This shampoo did not wash the oil out of my hair at all! I was worried after shampoo because I didn't feel that squeaky clean feeling I expect from a clarifying shampoo, but I kept going thinking that maybe it was just more moisturizing than others. Nope. I got out of the shower, blow dried my hair, and it looks like I still have a ton of oil in my hair, probably because I do. I really don't understand how this is a clarifying shampoo, I even shampoo twice in my shower too, that's my routine I always shampoo twice but especially when I have oil in my hair. My first order of business today will be returning this thing to Ulta and getting the Ouai Detox that I should have just splurged on in the first place. Then I need to rewash and blow dry my hair again, for the second time within 24 hours which is infuriating. Add to all of that the fact that this thing doesn't have any scent that I can smell. I expect my hair care products to be highly scented, I prefer musky non floral scents but regardless it should be scented. When I stick my nose in the bottle I can vaguely smell something, but when using it in the shower and after: nothing, smells like literally nothing. Because I was losing way too much hair, my doctor recommended a biotin supplement. It worked very well and the hair loss was history. Because of that success, I was anxious to try Biotin shampoo and I wasn't disappointed. My hair is smooth and shiny and my hairdresser commented on its increased body. Great for people with skin sensitivity. This does not make my skin itch and I noticed that my hair isn't falling out in clumps when I wash my hair. I might lose all of 10 hairs after washing with this. I tend to have oily skin and hair, this may be the difference between people who love this and those who don't. If you have oily hair, this is an excellent choice. Some people have commented that it's harsh on their hair, but that feeling lasts for only a few minutes right after rinsing. I don't use conditioner and this shampoo does NOT feel harsh after I brush out my hair. I’m allergic to some plant extracts such as lavender, rosemary. Many fragrance free products use these ingredients as fragrance and/or other purposes. Bought this shampoo because it’s real fragrance free to me. However, it made my armpit length hair tangled. It might be great for short hair. Instead of wasting it, I used it as shower gel. I have very oily roots that are very prone to build up. I usually have to wash my hair about every other day. Lately my scalp has been really itchy for some reason so I’m swapping out my regular shampoo for this one since it’s gentle. It didn’t get rid of the itch on my scalp but it is noticeably improved. This shampoo also got rid of all the weird oily build up that was on my hair and left it feeling really clean. I don’t think this would work for someone with dry hair and you definitely need to follow with conditioner for the length of your hair or it would be super dry. I used this shampoo for about 6 weeks when I realized that it was causing little pimple-like bumps all over my scalp, and I realized I was also breaking out more around my hairline on my face. On top of that, I was noticing more hair than usual in my brush every time I would brush my hair but I thought maybe it was just me overthinking. Only in the last couple weeks I realized that my hair didn't actually feel as thick as it usually did and that's when I finally realized that I had lost a significant enough amount of hair from this shampoo that it was time to stop before I did further damage. I got impulsive over the pandemic and bleached my hair at home. It looks great but I'd have to cut off another inch with each blow dry because it was so fried. I switched to Maple products and found that the Silk18 line works best for me. Obviously my hair is still damaged but it feels so much better and it's a thousand times more manageable. I used this shampoo with the Silk18 conditioner. It has a nice scent, lasts a long time and at a great price. I absolutely loved the way my hair looked and smelled with this. Incredibly soft and luscious. Unfortunately I had to stop using it after I moved to Colorado because it wasn’t hydrating enough for my scalp. I received the Nioxin System 1 (3 pieces) for free for testing purposes. These are my own opinions. First, I’d like to share that I’ve been using the 3 piece set (shampoo, conditioner and scalp treatment) for a little over a month. I do not shampoo my hair daily and I try to go as many days as possible in between washes. That being said, I still saw some results in the short amount of time I used this product. First, the shampoo leaves your hair feeling clean. The smell is pleasant and there is a cooling, tingling sensation with these products that I really enjoy. It’s depressing and scary. I’ve collagen and biotin but I didn’t notice much of a difference. After using Nioxin for this short amount of time, I’m already seeing baby hairs!!! I have used St Clements Shampoo Bar for over a year now and have since then switched to Ethique conditioner as well. I hope to leave some helpful thoughts on this bar as I have gotten to know it well over the past year. PROS: The sustainability, the results, the smell- there are so many good things I can say about this product. I have pretty thin hair. I originally switched to this bar because the shampoo I purchased at the grocery store was causing my hair to fall out. I decided I wanted to go natural to eliminate the chances of that ever happening again. I originally purchased this bar on Amazon simply because of its natural ingredients- without knowing anything about the Ethique company itself. Once I tried the bar and learned more about the values of the company, I was hooked. This is currently the only shampoo bar I have tried and could see myself venturing into other shampoo bars from Ethique in the future, but either way I have definitely found a soap company I will stay with. The bar helps my hair feel lighter, has allowed me to go an extra day in between washes, and is just as easy to use as liquid shampoo (once you get the hang of it). I also appreciate their value on sustainability and being kind to the environment. After my initial order on Amazon, I have ordered directly from Ethique to receive a plastic-free shipment. That alone is 100% worth the few extra dollars for shipping. Plus, the free sample size product they give you usually equates to the cost of shipping anyways and is a great gateway to trying other products from Ethique. CONS: Product-wise I don't have many bad things to say about this bar, but I did dock one star for one main reason: lifetime. I love this bar so much that I don't mind paying more for Ethique products. I do not, however, agree that the price of this shampoo bar is comparable to a bottle of "normal" shampoo at the grocery store based on its lifetime. My bars last between a month and half to two months. The first bar I bought I used incorrectly (I made suds and then washed) and have since then learned how to use the bar correctly. The month and half time average is based on the bars I used correctly. This also correlates to storage. I live in a pretty low humidity climate- its really dry here. I store my bar on soap saver pad on a metal-bar shower shelf and when I leave the shower I make sure to leave the shower doors open and the bathroom fan on for a while after I'm done. I find that the bar still remains really soft in between washes, and often breaks down while in use. This results in me going through the bar a lot quicker, since large clumps pull off the bar into my hair. I did not have this problem with the first few bars I used, but it has since been common in my past few purchases. If there are any recommendations from people who have experienced this on how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it! Hair feels clean. I was using a now discontinued liquid Charcoal Shampoo from another company, which I was happy with. This is even better for my hair and scalp. I cannot use "cheap" or "supermarket" shampoo due to reaction to additives but am not having a reaction to St Clements because it is free of the toxic (to me ) preservatives in most shampoos. I chose this brand over a cheaper option at Priceline, because Ethique has a cleaner ingredient list while the other brands stocked contain nasty (to me ) ingredients and/or preservatives. My naturally poker straight hair is not artificially lifted by this shampoo bar and is very clean with four short strokes on my waist length hair. Only issue is trying to keep the bar dry, as bathroom often in use. If you have a busy bathroom, a face washer isn't going to keep the bar dry and the box will stay wet. Should be sorted soon as getting a free pink container with latest order. Thank you for not putting Aloe in everything, as I am allergic to it and appreciate Ethique adds ingredients because they are beneficial or essential to the formula, not because they are "trending" like some other brands do.Jen

I love this shampoo. It's meant for oily hair. I tried a "normal" hair shampoo and it convinced me to try this. I've been using it forever now and I love the effect it has. It makes my hair soft. I do still use a "normal" based hair conditioner (I think it's kookabar) for extra silk texture. I am a little annoyed because it's recebtly started to get really soft and slip between the grates of its rack. (Photo to follow) This has started in the past month roughly. I keep it away from the stream of water, uncovered to air dry. It seems to only affect this recipe since, as previously stated, I did try one "normal" sampler and a normal block. This shampoo has been a favorite in my family for years. So upset that you felt the need to change it. While most shampoos are becoming impossible to use for those with fine hair, due to added waxes and silicones, this shampoo stood alone as a great middle ground. It had just enough moisture with no buildup on the hair (most likely the glycerin?) It now turns my hair to straw and I will use it as car wash. Even the green apple smell is gone! But after scanning with my EWG app and finding how toxic these shampoos, conditioners and soaps are with their poisonous added artificial fragrance. I no longer purchase suave anymore. Ok, I’m a woman and I bought this without realizing it was marketed as men’s shampoo. I love the scent, it smells like fresh, clean nature. I started using this after my wife bought it for herself on accident. I'm really glad she did, because it's now my favorite shampoo. It leaves my hair feeling softer and better moisturized than other shampoos that I've used. I've started using in on my beard as well, since it leaves it with the same supple texture. The only thing I would change would be to have a deodorant or eau de cologne with the same juniper and eucalyptus formula to pair with it. I am so glad I decided to try the suave brand! Not only does this shampoo have tea tree oil in it, but it has hemp seed oil. The tea tree helps me with my dry scalp and prevents me from developing dandruff. The hemp seed oil helps with stimulating and maintaining hair growth. I love this shampoo since it gives my entire scalp a refreshing feeling. Since I have been using my hair is shiny, soft and silky. Best of all, it is tangle-free! I have had dry scalp for many years now and am constantly searching for different shampoos that will help me get rid of it. I've tried everything from expensive T-gels to almost every brand of dandruff shampoo out there. I have used Tea Tree oil shampoo before, and while it helped a little, wasn't very effective. By the second day after using it, the dandruff was back. This Suave Tea Tree and Hemp Seed Oil seems to be much better at helping with the dandruff. I have had much less white flakes even into the 3rd day after washing when I use this. One thing I have noticed however is that it tends to make my hair more frizzy and statically charged. I braid my hair after washing when it's wet, and then the day after I pull out the braids to have that nice wavy look to it. But with this shampoo, it makes my hair frizzy for the second day (which is good is you need more volume in your hair, otherwise, not so helpful), and by the third day, my hair is sticking to everything from the static charge. So while great for dandruff, I have to weigh in the frizziness and static to the review also. I would definitely recommend the product because of it's excellent job on dandruff despite the unfortunate side effects.rosepaw

I was so excited to try out Suave's new Revitalizing Tea Tree & Hemp Seed Oil Shampoo!! I've heard and read of all the great benefits of the two oils, but have yet to try either. I'm very picky about which products I use on my hair. As my hair is long, curly, frizzy, has some damage and just needs extra care. I wasn't sure how I would like Suave. Right away I noticed the scent, I love the smell, like mint! Not too strong, or light, just right. I did notice that the shampoo is not a thin, or as runny as some other's. Which is a good thing. It laters up and massages into my hair quite nicely. It also rinses out fast and easy, bonus. I love the fact this has tea tree oil in it, as it helps with various things. Such as dandruff, I don't suffer with dandruff, but it also provides antibacterial benefits, which help hair growth. It also has hemp seed oil, which has it all! Hemp seed oil contains many dietary nutrients, like vitamins, minerals, proteins, omega fatty acids, & more to support and help promote healthy hair. All of which I absolutely love and need right now with my hair. I just had it cut last month. Perfect time to take the best care of it I can, and providing it with both oils I feel will help my hair to become less frizzy, more voluminous, less damaged, and looking all around better. With longer term use, I could see this giving me my desired results. I'd definitely recommend.Kay414

I used this shampoo as part of the full intense thickening system. Of all of the products in the system, the shampoo felt the most basic. It lathered well and smelled good, but the smell was almost too intense. All the products in the line have the same scent. However, the shampoo was overpowering in the shower and lingered even after a few days. That might be a plus to some, but I found the smell reminded me of stuffy, vintage luxury hotels—a little grandma-like. Overall, the shampoo did its job. I took my time massaging it in my hair and scalp to give it some time to absorb the nutrients. It cleaned my hair well and wasn't drying at all after rinsing. I didn't notice any particular reduction in hair fallout or softness on its own, but as part of the system, I think maximizing on all of the beneficial ingredients did help my scalp health as a whole. I have very fine hair that gets oily easily, and I noticed that as I was using this shampoo, my hair got oily a bit faster than usual, so I wonder if it's a bit too nourishing for my scalp. The more frequent oiliness went away after I introduced a clarifying shampoo though. I'd recommend it if you're planning to use the whole intense thickening system, but don't get it on its own, and be sure to use a clarifying shampoo at least once a week to help reduce build up.judy.z

I essentially replaced my current shampoo and conditioner and started using this the moment I got it. I wanted to be able to leave as legit of a review as I could for as long as the voxbox would allow before needing to leave my reviews. I wash my hair frequently at least 3 to 4 times weekly (that's just my preference) so this got used regularly and I can honestly say that the set as a whole does indeed make my hair feel thicker, fuller and overall healthier like it claims to. The scent is pleasant and lasts a lot longer than other products I've used. It feels like a high end brand to me. I liked being able to let my hair air dry and not having too much frizz. The thickness that it added wasn't a volume thickness just more of a my hair felt like "I had more of it feeling" I don't know if that makes sense but it makes your hair feel plentiful. I enjoyed trying this. I don't necessarily have an obsession with wanting thicker hair so I don't see the need to buy again for that purpose but for scent alone and the fact that my hair feels great using it I'd buy again and use again in the future.felicia .h

I suffered postpartum hair loss after having my first child in 2020 and once everything started growing back in and filling out, I got COVID and it took a bit of a toll on my hair! I was so excited to receive this Voxbox because it was a perfect fit for my hair needs! I have experimented with using only the shampoo and conditioner and not the serum and mask. Although I love the shampoo and conditioner using this mask along with the serum gives incredible results. My wispy baby hairs and fragile hair around my ears are growing a lot quicker than they were before incorporating all 4 products into my hair care regimen. I noticed my hair felt a lot stronger and resilient using the shampoo and conditioner alone, but I started seeing growth once I started using the whole system. However, the shampoo and this conditioner alone have much to offer! The shampoo is very potent and can kind of make your hair feel stripped – but the conditioner sorts it right out. If you use the serum and the mask along with the shampoo and conditioner though you won't have that problem after a couple uses! That's why it's a system 🙂 it doesn't lather much, which threw me off and made me use a little too much the first time, but it definitely cleanses. Remember to use it on your scalp, NOT your ends! I probably wouldn't use the shampoo without the conditioner or at least the mask, just because I could see it alone being drying. A lot of reviews complain about the smell, but I find it clean and uplifting and it dies down throughout the day. I used the “Hair Reset” as part of a 3-piece set. I feel that the Shampoo review goes hand in hand with the conditioner review since I used the products in conjunction with each other. For reference, I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. And, I have long, somewhat thick (as in a lot of it), fine hair. I also have my hair lightened (ombré/bayalgae) and it’s not all over lightened. I feel like the shampoo made my ends a tad drier and would need to be a 2-3x a month clarifying product. I did occasionally use the shampoo back to back, when I was heavy handed with dry shampoo, mousse, and other hair products. I also tried to stretch out the length of time between hair-shampoos (my max was maybe 4 days, but 3 is generally my breaking point as I feel I have a dirty/unmanageable hair). The scent is nice, it is a fruity apple scent (fragrance is the 7th ingredient on the label for sensitive folks). This conditioner is kind of thin, not quite watery, but definitely not a thick formula. On most days, I needed a little bit more on the conditioning side as it’s been dry here this fall, and I potentially over used the shampoo as well. I would let this conditioner sit on my hair 1-3 minutes and occasionally, I would comb through the ends with a shower comb. But most days I needed more so I would add an additional conditioner to my ends (remember though, I have very long hair). But if you don’t have dry ends, this may be just fine for you. It is free of; silicones, petrolatum, mineral oils, parabens, and dyes. And, I do adore that Garnier is cruelty free. FYI Garnier is owned by L’Oreal and L’Oreal is not cruelty free. This specific product is labeled a vegan. Overall, if used on an occasional basis, I would recommend trying out this line. It is available at Walmart and at a very affordable price point. The scalp scrub/shampoo/conditioner is good after 12 months of opening, so just be sure to use it within that time frame. If your ends are drier, you may want to have a thicker conditioner on hand (just in case).lauren.b

Im one of those people that can't just waste a product, and ive been struggling to finish it. I have 2A long, thick, hair and got this when I saw it at Walmart, to try and help with my scalp buildup, and it makes it worse, and almost a waxy feeling on my scalp, and more dandruff. The sebum also feels worse and icky and my hair looks dull and lifeless. I even do the wash, rinse, and repeat to really lather it. After about 6months of use, I dislike it even more, yet I can't just throw it out and waste money. Save your money on this and go with a different clarifying shampoo or scalp cleaner. The first couple times I used it it seemed to work, but after it went downhill, so it was too late to return it.Annie

I think this is a pretty good clarifying shampoo that you can pick up from Walmart. I do like the scent; it’s a light apple scent. I used at least 3/4 of the bottle and overall, I feel it is a good clarifying shampoo (especially for this price point). Overtime though, I felt it made my hair dry. It wasn’t my daily shampoo but on some occasions I did use it back to back (I wash my hair 2-3 times a week). I used this as a 3-piece system (scalp scrub, shampoo, conditioner) and found that the conditioner was thin and needed following up with a heavier conditioner (see conditioner review for more). This shampoo is not sulfate free. Sodium laureth sulfate is the second ingredient on the label, next to water… so if you are sensitive or have color treated hair, you may want to avoid this shampoo. This also may have been what attributed to the eventual dryness of my hair. I have long, somewhat thick (as in a lot of it), fine hair – for reference. However, it is free of; silicones, petrolatum, mineral oils, parabens, and dyes. And, I do adore that Garnier is cruelty free. FYI Garnier is owned by L’Oreal and L’Oreal is not cruelty free.
