where have you been my entire life? I have very thick course hair and I love it long. I also have a lot of gray in my roots so it gets wiry, and lets not omit the part where I insist my hairstylist texturized and razors my hair (she fights me every single time) for layers and thinning purposes. I was so excited to try the new Olaplex No.4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo and was not disappointed! I start off by applying weekly in place of my regular shampoo to my wet hair at the scalp working to ends, working it into a lather, letting it sit for around 5 minutes to fully penetrate and process, rinse and follow with conditioner. This shampoo really does an amazing job clarifying my hair without leaving it feeling it dry like many others do because it is pH balanced. It removes buildup, damaging impurities, excess oil, pollution, heavy metals, and hard water minerals which basically covers so many things and what more could I personally ask for in a clarifying shampoo I ask myself? I am not sure if this specific formula has been discontinued. I really liked this formula, and never had any issues with hair loss or scalp irritation. I have oily and fine hair, and use dry shampoo daily to extend the amount of time in between washes( 3rd or 4th day). By the time hair wash day comes around, the amount of product build up is unreal, but somehow this shampoo manages to remove all of the build up. When using this shampoo after a while, I did t have to use as much dry shampoo, and extend the time in between washes to every 5 days.susanne.j
Used it twice and WOW! I have thick curly hair. 3c/4a. I always used head and shoulders to clarify because I knew it was a harsher shampoo and helped with dandruff. It worked okay but dried my hair out really bad until I decided to buy this. This shampoo left my hair SUPER shiny. My hair hasn’t had a bit of shine to it in almost 7 years. It also feels silky when I straighten it. I can tell my hair will be a lot more healthier keeping this in my routine. Can’t believe I never knew about this until now. Okay first and foremost, this stuff smells terrible. The scent is incredibly strong and clings to my hair when used. It does admittedly work well at clarifying hair. I used this twice a month for about a year and other than the smell, I had no real complaints. In fact, it made my hair have tons of volume. However, I feel like it should be pointed out that this product does contain Dmdm Hydantoin. This ingredient is pretty controversial at the moment in relation to hair loss. As someone suffering from telogen effluvium due to covid I don't want to take any chances on more hair loss. If they got rid of that ingredient and toned down the smell, I would absolutely go back to using this. For now though, I will have to find a different clarifying shampoo.britt

I always love ion products for coloring and toning my hair after bleaching, and this aftercare shampoo and conditioner line proved to be the same.. almost. The shampoo I found worked very well to keep my color bright and non brassy, but it left my hair so dry, even with the conditioner after. I started to mix some of the shampoo in with my Loreal Dream Lengths shampoo and it helped a lot. The conditioner is great for my hair all over, non greasy, conditions well, smells great. But because I'm working on healing my hair in certain areas I ended up using the Ion conditioner on my roots, top of my head to about midway down, where I would add the Loreal Dream Lengths conditioner, which as I state in my review of that Loreal conditioner, it leaves my roots and upper head hair greasy but perfectly midway down to my roots, so it's actually a perfect mix for me. I would use the Ion conditioner all over with not one issue, and sometimes do, but am still working to repair my ends. Overall great product line from Ion. I use Arctic fox hair color to keep my hair. A vibrant mixture of purple and red. Red is a notoriously difficult color to keep in your hair because of its molecular size compared to other colors. It doesn't lock into the cuticle as quickly and this product helps with that. I not only use it right after coloring my hair, I also use it beyond that. Rather than washing my hair every single day which would strip the color right out of it, I rinse my hair and then condition it with this product. Stop changing the formula! It seems like every time I’ve bought this the past year, the formula is different. I loved this shampoo (and the conditioner) for years, but this past year it’s a crapshoot as to how much they’ve changed the formula. I brought this on a trip to Phoenix, AZ to use after swimming to remove chlorine. I have bleached hair (Asian dark brunette to blonde/grey) and did not want to risk my bleached hair turning green. I have an oily scalp from seborrheic dermatitis and probably because it's just oily so I discovered Paul Mitchell Shampoo 2 for oily hair and it's the best. I buy a salon size at Paul Mitchell or a buy one get one at Ulta, works and lasts forever (see full review). But after living somewhere with soft water my whole life then moving to somewhere that's 100/100 on the hard water scale has been hard on my hair. I looked into Shampoo 3, which I associate with chlorine because decades ago when I was a swimmer I used this to protect my blonde hair. It was a different formula that was green then. Now my hair is dark blonde with darker roots (natural blonde) so it shows oil and buildup well. I have all kinds of filters to help with the hard water, but when it's that bad filters don't do much. This shampoo has a light blue tint and a subtle grapefruit scent. Shampoo 2 is clear with a softer lemon scent. I'm sensitive to dyes and fragrance and this doesn't bother me at all. I used this once a week and it really helps! I have so much volume after using this and my roots look great for days (I use another shampoo and wash my hair every other day). I really like this. I probably would need a purple shampoo to take the brassiness out of my blonde but I'm happy that this lets me go longer between washing my hair and does seem to remove some hard water buildup. This is drying. I just use it around my roots and then use a hair mask. If you have dry hair, then get in chlorine, then use this yes it will dry out your hair. But for my needs this has replaced shampoo 2

I honestly use the shampoo and conditioner everyday. I bought a leave in conditioner- that also doesn’t have any silicones- and it’s all amazing. My hair has never been more thoroughly clean and moisturized. I ran out of this one day and had to get a trim that morning. I used some cheap shampoo and conditioner that I had under my sink. I've been struggling to find a gentle shampoo that actually cleans my hair and then I found this! It may be clarifying if you have dry hair that doesn't need daily washing, but my fine oily hair needs this daily. This has a great amount of protein for me and the coconut oil helps prevent protein loss from daily washing. Using the matching conditioner is too much protein for me daily so I alternate it with a protein free conditioner. I really like this. For me the smell lasts a while and it does a good job of clarifying my scalp. It smells great and it does what it says it’s going to do. My only issue is that it takes a while to rinse out. My hair feels a certain way after rinsing for what I would say is my “normal” rinsing time. I probably rinse an extra 30 seconds to a minute more than usual. But that’s okay with me because I don’t use this daily so to me it’s not a giant issue. But it might be for others. My hair has literally never felt better. My hairstylist said my hair had a lot of product buildup so I researched the best product to remove it and came across this. I NEVER want to use another shampoo again! My bleached hair feels like virgin hair again and feels so clean. I saw a mix of reviews saying that this shampoo sucked all the moisture out of their hair, and I could see where this may be an initial thought in the washing process because it does feel like it’s sucking everything from your hair WHILE washing… BUT the results are amazing. My hair is absolutely obsessed. It is truly in love with this shampoo. I used to use Paul Mitchell tea tree lemon and sage thickening shampoo but now my hair can’t get enough of this stuff! It’s packed with awesome ingredients and is full of great stuff for your hair. I would recommend reading what’s in this stuff and I’m sure you’ll agree! You’ll notice in the reviews that this makes your hair stiff. That is true. This is a clarifying shampoo so that means it’s actually doing it’s job by stripping everything kinda like the life out of it because it’s trying to rid the product build up. All you have to do is go in with a bangin conditioner and you’ll be fine! I usually add all the stuff back in with a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner once this clarifies it all out. Really great clarifying shampoo! A lot of clarifying shampoos can be very stripping of your hair and I find this one works so effectively without leaving the hair feeling like hay. I have type 2 (Wavy) hair, that's medium-fine so a lot of products can be weighing or damaging but I've found every product from Pattern including this one I've tried so far has been amazing. I focus the shampoo primarily on my scalp and use the access to wash the length of my hair. I do find it doesn't sud a lot so emulsifying prior to applying to your hair really helps greatly to get the most out of the product.VinaSivz

It’s been almost 3 months since I purchased this. I actually just sent an message to Pattern on Instagram about the clarifying shampoo so I’m just going to copy and paste that here and I’m sorry that it’s so long… Your clarifying shampoo is THE BEST shampoo I have ever used. Not the best clarifying shampoo, the best shampoo in general. This is coming from someone who does not like clarifying at all and I cannot stress this enough. My hair would always feel desert dry, hard and tangled after using one. I bought the clarifying shampoo, instead of the hydration shampoo, because it had no silicones. I thought I was making a mistake but decided to try it out and support the brand anyway. Make a bigger size just for me please because this was the best decision I ever made and I have a new one in my cart right now!!! My hair feels amazing after, it’s clean but not stripped, if anything it feels softer. I don’t know how, it must be magic. It is literally the only shampoo I use now and I follow up with the lightweight conditioner. A few months back I purchased this clarifying shampoo. I am pretty pleased with it, it does what it says. I get build up from styling products and this helps remove that. I bought this specifically to wash off the remaining hair dye fading on my hair. This is not a shampoo I regularly use due to my chemically processed hair and can be a bit drying. It impressively cleanses the hair and scalp by striping all the build-up and residue, including hair dye to the best of its ability. Even though it does not remove the color entirely, it's as good as it gets a shampoo. This 10.5 fl oz squeeze cylinder bottle goes for $7.99. I picked up this shampoo because I live in an apartment and my shower has a lot of hard water and minerals that come from the pipes. I was very hopeful this shampoo would help to remove all that mineral and hard water buildup, which it did. however if you are going to use this, use a moisturizing mask afterwards because this will dry out your hair and make it tangly and unmanageable. Also only use this 1-2x monthly to avoid severely dehydrating your hair. This is an inexpensive product compared to other hard water or detox shampoos, but i have noticed the pricier options hydrate your hair a bit more while washing with them. If the world ever ran out of oil and we were faced with a National Oil Crisis.. FEAR NOT! My head could support the world and all its oil needs. Like for real- for real, I could wash in the morning and by lunch look like I was on day 3 of “no ones gonna know” dry pooing. I have tried many products and unless I’m fresh out the salon I can never skip a wash without everyone knowing! I wanted a clarifying shampoo in my hair routine due to having oily hair and using dry shampoo sometimes as well! I was stuck between OUAI and this Paul Mitchell one. $30 vs $15. I picked up the Paul Mitchell one from Ulta to give it a try. I have been using it for 6 months and I really like the feel of it! Definitely give it a try in between your normal shampoo! I have an oily scalp from seborrheic dermatitis and probably because it's just oily so I discovered Paul Mitchell Shampoo 2 for oily hair and it's the best. I buy a salon size at Paul Mitchell or a buy one get one at Ulta, works and lasts forever (see full review). But after living somewhere with soft water my whole life then moving to somewhere that's 100/100 on the hard water scale has been hard on my hair. I looked into Shampoo 3, which I associate with chlorine because decades ago when I was a swimmer I used this to protect my blonde hair. It was a different formula that was green then. Now my hair is dark blonde with darker roots (natural blonde) so it shows oil and buildup well. I have all kinds of filters to help with the hard water, but when it's that bad filters don't do much. This shampoo has a light blue tint and a subtle grapefruit scent. Shampoo 2 is clear with a softer lemon scent. I'm sensitive to dyes and fragrance and this doesn't bother me at all. I used this once a week and it really helps! I have so much volume after using this and my roots look great for days (I use another shampoo and wash my hair every other day). I really like this. I probably would need a purple shampoo to take the brassiness out of my blonde but I'm happy that this lets me go longer between washing my hair and does seem to remove some hard water buildup. This is drying. I just use it around my roots and then use a hair mask. If you have dry hair, then get in chlorine, then use this yes it will dry out your hair. But for my needs this has replaced shampoo 2

I’ll admit, I was skeptical. I had their fine hair shampoo/conditioner and was thrilled how well they work. I use probably 2-4 products a day because I have a wolf cut. I dry shampoo on the 2nd day and 3rd, and ideally shower the 3rd night or 4th day. I’ve been getting by just fine double shampooing, but I felt I needed something a liiiittle heavier duty. I always see people rave about this and for 30$, I was certainly giving it the side eye. Not anymore! I am a believer in this fry shampoo. I have previously religiously bleached hair, so my mid-shaft and ends can be very sensitive to harsher cleansers. I haven’t had any issues with this product at all so far. I have an incredibly oily scalp that even with my own oils and serums, still loves to produce its own factory of oil. If you have dryer hair but still want to detox, try pre-oiling your hair and scalp a bit before a shower, I think that could help A TON! I love how this removes all of the oils and gunk without making your hair feel like legit STRAW like some detox shampoos can. Reviewers complaining that it left them MORE oily forget that *THIS IS NOT FOR DAILY USE*. It literally says that. If you’re using a detox shampoo for daily use, why? Your poor hair. Anyway, I love this. I lather before I put on and really scrub with my nails and follow up with a shampoo massager to get all the grime and oil from my scalp. I leave it on for about a minute, then I rinse. Voila, perfectly soft and fluffy hair! Following with Ouai’s fine hair conditioner and my hair is bouncy and soft. Fine hair girls know the struggle of getting any sort of bouncy volume AND softness… and this really does help. I use this right now every Sunday. I love it for getting product out of my hair on days I may have used 5 products instead of my normal 4 and I HAVE to use it after 3 days. It’s not gonna kill you to use it that often, but try to limit it to once a week. Twice if you use a lot of hair products. 10/10.Madsgascar
I started noticing problems in my hair at the start of 2020. I've always had thin hair but started experiencing hair loss in mid-2020 (I've never had covid). On top of this I have greasy hair – I'm talking my hair gets greasy every single day and I've tried training it to not be, but I've had greasy hair since the beginning of time so ruling this as genetics! Since 2020 I've been on the hunt for a shampoo that can get rid of the grease and not strip my hair, suffice to say this is the one! After much research and many shampoos later, I decided to get the OUAI detox shampoo. My hair instantly feels clean as soon as I lather the shampoo on. When I rinse, my hair is squeaky clean. It air-dries nicely (straight) and doesn't have any frizz in it afterwards. My hair feels healthy and looks fuller. I use this shampoo once a week for a deep clean, it keeps my hair oil-free for a bit longer but the biggest difference is that it doesn't get as greasy as it used to with my everyday shampoo. I've only used this 3 times and I'm already impressed and when it finishes I will get the full size version. Probably the only shampoo I'll continue to repurchase.Sam
Super bummed that this didn't work out as well for me as I though it would. For reference my hair texture is medium and straight (that good good thick asian girl hair) and I typically go 4-5 days between washes (trained my scalp decently enough to control oil because she gets *oily* ok). Not sure if I just used this wrong the first time (too much?? shouldn't have shampooed twice since I normally do that w my normal shampoo?? even tho I used less than a quarter sized amount??) but after the first use it completely stripped my scalp and make it super flaky and itchy (truly shocking given that my scalp is on the oilier side) and by the second day, my scalp was super greasy and dirty (not even dry shampoo could fix her). So bummed! Esp. since I don't really need to wash my hair/get greasy until day 4 or 5. Ever since then I haven't used it (went back to my main shampoo) but it seems like the effects still last aka my scalp/hair still gets greasy way earlier than it used to even though I've discontinued use, and I feel like i have to re-train my scalp to get to day 5 again. I'll give it another shot and use way less and only shampoo once, then maybe balance it out w my usual shampoo but for the time being this really wasn't for me. I got a sample of the shampoo and conditioner and finally used today. Here's my take: One of the most important factors to consider as part of the result when trying a hair product, especially a shampoo and conditioner is the type of the WATER you wash your hair with. Specifically for any clarifying types of shampoo, the water will make all the difference. So, in this case, here's is what your results would be: If your water is soft, most likely this shampoo will be phenomenal. If your water is hard, the stripping and straw- like feeling most likely to happen, if your water is hard, but you have a decent quality water softener, your will probably will like this product just as much as I did. My hair felt super clean, but no stripping or dry felling. it felt just right! If you have hard water with a crapy water softener, your result will most likely be "sticky" hair, because since the water softeners use salt crystals in order to "condition" the water and if the quality of this equipment is not good, it will feel like your hair was just washed with water from the ocean, because that's how it will react with the ingredients of this particular product! When DryBar says clarifying, it really means it. On The Rocks is the most efficient clarifying shampoo I ever tried. A small amount removes all the build-up product, dry shampoo, sweat and dirt or whatever you might have in your hair. I actually think one shampoo application would be enough, but personally I always shampoo twice. Although it's black in color, it's not the kind of charcoal shampoo that will stain the entire shower / bath. And for a clarifying shampoo it doesn't dry out the hair. But I wouldn't use it more then every 2-3 weeks (I wash my hair every 3-4 days), it's too… clarifying. My problem is the scent. We finally found a product that actually works and helps. If you have greasy, oily and/or flaky scalp this works wonders. I came across this shampoo at a Tj Maxx and once I read the back I knew I had to take it home with me. It seemed very promising as far as detoxing the hair from product buildup. The lather is great and the smell is as well BUT even though I used conditioner afterwards my hair was stiff and hard as a board. It not only removed the product buildup but it completely stripped my hair color. I was shocked when I looked in the mirror only to see that I no longer had any dye and my grey hair made it seem as if I hadn’t dyed my hair in months. I purchased the product to cut the buildup in my hair. I've tried other clarifying shampoos that work pretty good but this product goes above and beyond. My hair is bouncy again and surprisingly my color is MORE vibrant after using it. I use Redken "blondage" shampoo a couple times per week to keep my blonde hair from getting brassy and it works fantastic! I think bouncing between shampoos really "mucks up" my hair. Not for every day in my opinion. This is a cream but still pretty harsh, especially for dry, fine hair such as mine. I use this every few months to get any residue out from left-over product. Any more than that would really strip my hair too much. But keep in mind that I have really dry hair. If your hair is oily, this might be just the thing. After one wash I can feel a difference in my hair. We live out in the country and use county water and you can smell the metals in it as you shower. I can't really even color my hair anymore because the water strips it out inside 3 weeks time. My complaint is that my bottles leaked everywhere and I lost over half my product in shipping. When I pulled them out of their box, both lids were completely unscrewed and product was everywhere. This hair care set has been wonderful in helping to counteract the hard water where I live! I use the shampoo and conditioner usually 1-3 times a week (2x on average) and it works very well, keeping my hair silky and mineral-free. Please be aware that the treatment packets can be quite rough on hair, though – more hair tends to fall out than usual after using one of the packets. For me, the 4 packets that come in this set are perfect for dealing with the buildup that occurs if I've only used the shampoo and conditioner 1x per week for a few weeks, but I would (personally) caution against regular use. But as long as I use the shampoo and conditioner regularly, there's no issue with this! Use 2-3 times per week is perfect for negating the effects of hard water, and keeping my hair feeling healthy! I'd give this 4½ stars. I know this line is for curls, but I have type 1 hair and I like this shampoo. I have oily roots and usually use , but after several years I feel like my hair is used to it. I live in an area that's 100/100 on the hard water scale, and while I don't use products I need something to clean my dark blonde hair once a week. I had been using , but it's drying and I prefer it just for chlorine. I was getting something else on Ulta when I saw this and decided to give it a try. This uses citrus to clarify, though you should be aware unlike other shampoo in the brand this isn't sulfate free if that's what you're looking for. This is a gel like texture, mostly clear but slightly yellow. And while there is a citrus scent it's covered up by perfume which I don't appreciate. It's not so strong it lingers, and if you've read my other reviews you know haircare is where I have most of my allergic reactions but I can use this fine. It's also expensive, 8.5oz for $18 and 33.8oz for $50 though I'd have to go to the brand's website to get the larger size at a better price per ounce. I do feel like this does a good job cleaning my hair without striping it as promised. I don't love the scent, but it's not a big problem. The price is easier because it's a once every 1 to 2 week shampoo. I also don't need a lot, but again I have fine hair and not curls. All in all I really like this shampoo and will keep using it.
Like most curly-hair individuals, I have a magnificent collection of hair products. Therefore, I need a clarifying shampoo every once awhile. My hair is well-moisturized, but to keep everything curly and pristine I have to use some pretty heavy product. This did nothing. I'm pretty sure I used 1/4 of the bottle to get through my hair in one wash, and I only wash once a week. There are better products out there with better ingredients for less money. This shampoo SAVED my hair. I’ve been using Native shampoo conditioner for about 6 months and I noticed my scalp start to have so much dandruff. It was REALLY bad. My hit also seemed really oily pretty quickly. At this point, it felt like I just couldn’t get it out no matter how long I rinsed. There was just lots of build up. This shampoo literally saved my hair. After one wash, it felt significantly better and actually clean. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do. This product will also last long since we should not be clarifying our hair often. I have curly hair with a kinky texture. The directions says to use a dime-quarter size amount and I would stick by that. I used a little more than quarter size and my hair/scalp was clean fast. I had such high hopes for this brand, and especially the shampoo. I love the way the bottle looks it's so cute in the blush color, and I've heard great things from so many people about that they love the shampoo. I hate it. I need a clarifying shampoo because once a week I put a ton of oil, and sometimes hair masks as well, on my hair. I'm trying to regrow my hair, a little bit over a year ago I was completely bald, so I use mostly biotin and Castor oils. My regular shampoo washes them out pretty well, as well as my cheap drugstore shampoo, even it washes the oils out okay. I just wanted a clarifying shampoo for these weekly hair oil treatments. This shampoo did not wash the oil out of my hair at all! I was worried after shampoo because I didn't feel that squeaky clean feeling I expect from a clarifying shampoo, but I kept going thinking that maybe it was just more moisturizing than others. Nope. I got out of the shower, blow dried my hair, and it looks like I still have a ton of oil in my hair, probably because I do. I really don't understand how this is a clarifying shampoo, I even shampoo twice in my shower too, that's my routine I always shampoo twice but especially when I have oil in my hair. My first order of business today will be returning this thing to Ulta and getting the Ouai Detox that I should have just splurged on in the first place. Then I need to rewash and blow dry my hair again, for the second time within 24 hours which is infuriating. Add to all of that the fact that this thing doesn't have any scent that I can smell. I expect my hair care products to be highly scented, I prefer musky non floral scents but regardless it should be scented. When I stick my nose in the bottle I can vaguely smell something, but when using it in the shower and after: nothing, smells like literally nothing. And I had the same panic too with no scent so I checked and I can smell everything else just not this shampoo. 0/10 would definitely not recommend this shampoo, maybe the regular one is better, but I won't be finding out.jennifer.h

I think there might be some confusion in these reviews. There's a difference between "greasy" hair and hair so clean it goes straight or becomes slippery enough you can't put it in a pony tail. This shampoo will clean your hair to the point that you might not be able to style it like you usually would. This works very well to remove build up and leaves hair shiny and clean without drying it out. When we say squeaky clean we mean it, after you rinse you can hear it if your fingers brush against your roots. To avoid tangles, I would suggest using a good conditioner after this shampoo.Erica
I was so excited when I received this product! I love the Sebastian line and use the Dark Oil regularly! I have fine but very thick hair. I use a lot of hydrating and volumizing products as well as a ton of dry shampoo. I tend to get a lot of build up from my products and my normal shampoo doesn't do a great job of clarifying. I always notice build up around my ears and no matter how much I scrub, I always feel like there's some left over. I was really surprised at how little i needed to use of this shampoo for a nice lather. I worked it into my scalp and roots after sectioning my hair then used the conditioner. I didn't use any product after this so I could feel my hair after using just this. I let it air dry. When it was fully dried, my hair was shiny, soft, and even had volume and texture! I had very soft waves, which is unusual for my stick straight hair! The label says it's gentle enough to use every day, but with as dry as my hair and scalp get, I will only use it a few times a week and continue using my normal hydrating shampoo between clarifying treatmentsAdrienne
The product adds the volume and texture it says it does very well! If you want hair that can be formed any way you want it, this will work. I personally enjoyed being able to style it well by using it, but absolutely disliked the feel of my hair. In the shower it felt like I was washing my hair with hair spray, very sticky, dry, firm. After blow drying it, I could style my hair however I wanted it to, but it was extremely gangly and very dry. The plus side is it was easy to go 3 days without washing my hair because it kept that dry, textured look. I like to run my fingers through my hair though and play with the softness, and this would literally make me cringe and feel like I hadn't showered. Great product if that's what you're going for.
