Best Shampoos For Aging Hair (2025 Update)

If I could rate this product 10 stars I absolutely would. My only major complaint about this product is that it is a very expensive for its size. I know you can purchase larger bottles through a salon retailer if the salon will let you do it but I don't understand why you cannot buy this in a larger size. With that said, this product is hands-down by far my favorite shampoo ever. I have extremely long, thick, coarse, wavy hair. My hair is always in need of extra moisture / hydration. So whenever I look for a product I look for something that is going to be nourishing. This line makes my hair feel so silky soft and smooth it is incredible. Also scents don't seem to stay in my hair for very long after shampooing but I can still smell the shampoo and conditioner well after blow drying which makes me even more obsessed. This product has really transformed and moisturized my hair which helps contribute to less frizz. The scent is also incredible. I can't describe it. It's just clean, fresh and exotic. Aside from the fact that this cost a small fortune for an incredibly small bottle, this is a sensational shampoo. I recommend following it up with the rest of the line for maximum hair amazingness. v..c

I got this shampoo hoping to replace the Verb Ghost shampoo/conditioner I was using bc I’m boycotting products made in Israel now and I really love this shampoo and conditioner. Super moisturizing without weighing my hair down at all. It also makes my hair insanely shiny I love it. Also it smells great (and I’m not a fan of floral fragrance) I don’t understand the hate the scent gets, smells incredible to me. Only thing is that the packaging is sort of a pain but it’s okay because the product is that good that’s it’s easily worth it.krispiek

Davines is the best hair line around, period. Yes, its super pricey, but definitely worth it. Not only is it free from all of the bad stuff, the formulation really brings your hair to a whole new level of healthiness and vibrancy. The Davines conditioners last FOREVER. I use conditioner every day and you really only need a tiny but to get your hair conditioned. The shampoo goes a little bit quicker, but still lasts quite awhile. It is worth the money, trust me. It does have a scent to it, but because its all natural, the scent doesnt overpower, nor does it stay on your hair all day. Your hair will thank you. There is quite literally NOTHING hydrating about this shampoo. It's quite stripping, to the point where it feels like a clarifying shampoo. That said, it cleans my hair very nicely, giving me a squeaky clean feeling that I do actually like, especially since I only wash my hair about 2x a week and get a lot of build-up. Gives me nice volume, and my hair feels good when I follow up with the curly hair conditioner. For me, it works because I like a stronger shampoo, but if you're looking for something gentle and hydrating, this is NOT it. I would give this 5 stars if it was described as a clarifying or volumizing shampoo, but calling it hydrating??? They must be joking, especially at this price point.julia

I’m not sure why this shampoo isn’t talked about because it’s truly fantastic. I have naturally curly hair that I blow out every week. My hair is also currently damaged from coloring and all the blow outs so I’m taking a break from both. I’ve tried many others shampoos yet this is the only one that makes a visible difference, my hair is smoother and less frizzy when blown out or air dried, I also swear it extends my color. I’m so impressed with this shampoo that I got their intense hydrating mask, leave in conditioner and oil, I use it all together with a palm full of tigi curls rock amplifier and this combo gives healthy, voluminous curls. I grew up with their hair oil and it’s crazy that after all these years they still have some of the best hair products. I also included Ouai leave in conditioner in my pic, another amazing hydrating product, I alternate this with Moroccanoil’s leave in on wash days. Unfortunately the shampoo didn’t work for me. It has a very strong scent and it matted my hair while washing. I typically don’t write negative reviews because everyone has their own preferences, but I felt I should comment on the customer service in hopes someone from the company would read this and respond. I purchased about $100 worth of product that didn’t work for me. When I tried calling to see what my options were I got a message they were upgrading their phone system so they couldn’t take calls and to please email them. I kindly emailed them with no response. After 10 days I send them a second email… no response. I had been using Head and Shoulders and other various dandruff shampoo brands for my dandruff for years and never really found anything that helped much. I tried scalp scrubs, masks, rinses, treatments, etc and tons of home remedies and never found anything very effective. Until I saw a dermatologist on TikTok mention that dandruff is actually caused by a FUNGUS on your scalp 🤢 So gross. Anyway, he suggested trying something with ketoconazole in it and I ran out to Target to try this right away and it was worth every penny of the $14.99 or whatever it was that I paid. 10/10 if you have dandruff problems, try this. I’ve struggled with dandruff for years and have tried EVERY product; Selsun Blue, T/Gel, head and shoulders, home remedies, you name it. Head and Shoulders was really the only thing I found that kept it somewhat at bay and I still only use the condition along with using Nizoral shampoo. I have very thick and curly hair so I don’t wash it often which is why none of the other products worked for me because they would make my hair way too greasy. I have been using Nizoral for about 3 months now and will never use anything else. After only about a week of using it I noticed a drastic change in my scalp, no flakes AT ALL!! I’m not being paid for this, nor did I receive free product to try, I’m simply sharing my review in hopes that it helps others who have struggled with dandruff like I have. This is going to sound very disgusting but at one point many years ago I had dandruff really really bad. At least I thought it was the address. I kept using every single day and your shampoo I could find and it did very little. My skin on my scalp would flake and almost healed to the point of being a lot like cradle cap that little babies have. I couldn’t understand why I had this horrible Dandruff and why nothing I would buy would do anything to help it. Finally I was able to see a dermatologist who gave me a prescription shampoo and told me I’d had sebbhoreic dermatitis. Once my prescription ran out I was not able to go back to my dermatologist and there was quite the wait so I decided to try some other shampoos after reading online. This was one that I had seen recommended by other people. Nizoral actually helped my condition and I was quite surprised that they didn’t need a prescription shampoo. I don’t see my dermatologist very often and to get in there is a bit of a wait so I don’t bother anymore. Well.ca was kind enough to send me a deluxe sample size of this shampoo and conditioner. I didn’t know anything about this brand before trying it out. While I was blow drying my hair and lightly styling it with a ceramic-barrelled round brush, I noticed my hair was much shinier and thicker and was very easy to style. It really did behave more like my hair when I was much younger. I don’t know how often I would actually buy the full size of the shampoo and conditioner with their prices but maybe I’ll treat myself occasionally and keep these products to myself (my daughter already has young, beautiful hair!! My hair tends to be very finicky about shampoos, but this one definitely worked wonders for me! This was my first time trying a shampoo from the brand and I was pleasantly surprised. It definitely helped moisturize and add a lot of lift/bounce without leaving any residue behind or any squeaky clean type of feeling which generally means the hair has been stripped. Just want to start off by saying I received this product for free from Influenster in exchange for my honest review. Now that we got that out of the way, I don’t hate this shampoo, but I don’t think it’s right for my hair type either. When I used it, my hair fell very flat (it never felt heavy but it was clearly weighed down by how flat it fell). It also felt greasy by day 2 which isn’t usually the case for me. I tried it with leave in conditioner, without leave in, with foam volumizer, without it, etc., and nothing helped to give my hair more volume. Once I went back to my regular shampoo, my hair felt much cleaner and healthier. Again, I don’t think this was because this shampoo is terrible, I think it’s just not right for my hair type. I’m also a sulfate girl, so put that into consideration when reading my review. On the plus side, it did leave my hair with a beautiful shine (which may have been partially due to the conditioner as well), so I kind of hate that it didn’t work out for me. I have had thinning hair for about 2 years (likely due to combination of age, stress, menopause, etc) and literally a handful fell out everyday. I had about 25% of the hair I used to have and my hairdresser told me she had the same problem and was using this. I feel like this has literally saved my life. This shampoo is hands down one of the best shampoos for thinning hair, postpartum hair, COVID hair, hormone related hair thinning, and so much more. It takes about 6 weeks to truly notice a difference so don’t give up on it. My hair has regained so much of its thickness I thought was gone. It’s sopped falling out in handfuls. So far the best Purple Shampoo I've found. I have not used it long but My hair shines and actually feels thicker and softer. It hasn't really taken out all my brassiness yet but maybe after a few more uses it will. I am transitioning from medium brown colored treated hair to my natural white/grey hair that I'm letting grow out. It is very fine so my hairdresser didn't want to bleach it anymore for fear of damaging it more to get the orange and yellow tone out of it. She just highlighted down to blendable with my natural white/grey hair. That is probably why not all the brassiness is coming out with the Purple Shampoo. This is a top of the line Shampoo and I have the Silver Lining Butter Masque too, which I love and recommend everyone to try if you are transiting to white/grey hair like me. I regularly use Pura D'Or ACV shampoo and conditioner. I love it. However since my hair is high-maintenance needing moisture I use a lot of conditioner. I decided to order just a bottle of conditioner alone. I tried a different type to see how alternating two different lines would benefit my hair. I know that some ingredients have different properties. The number one ingredient in the ACV conditioner is aloe vera. But the mix in this conditioner keeps my hair stronger and prevents split ends on the days when I just wet it. It effectively prevents my hair from getting thinner. I was very happy to find this shampoo on Walmart.com. My first purchase of it was from Amazon and the shampoo was very thin and watery, I was not happy with the amount I would have to use to just get a lather. This new bottle from Walmart was so much better, the product was thicker and I'm not having to use as much to attain a good lather. I have been using for a couple of months and so far I have noticed that I am not having as much hair loss and I seem to have a lot of new growth. I spent a few hundred dollars and used a these products exclusively in November/December 2017. A few weeks into my new routine, I started noticing tons of breakage and scalp sores. I took the advice of my MP, added in an oil and a mask to combat the breakage and soothe my scalp… A few weeks later, my husband pointed out my rapidly thinning hair and bald spots appearing. I immediately stopped using ALL Monat products went to a doctor. The doctor advised that the new hair products severely damaged my scalp by causing a growth of bacteria and gave me steroids and some medicated rinses. I also went to my stylist who informed me that my scalp looked like I had chemical/acid burns and that Monat products completely fried chunks of my hair off. Now, I didn't go from using low quality drug store products on my hair to Monat, I don't have a hormonal imbalance, I don't have allergies to common products, I don't have a vendetta against MLM's or seeing people "succeed", it's not my water – we have a very high end water system in my house, and I certainly don't sell competing brands (I'm a teacher, not a stylist). I was using HIGH quality salon brands and took excellent care of my hair before switching. Since Nov/Dec 2017, I've had to cut off at least 8 inches, use medicated rinses, do expensive treatments at salons. 10 months later, and my scalp is still itchy and inflamed, I'm still experiencing severe breakage and fall out, my bald spots have filled in ever so slightly, but I'm now experiencing NEW bald spots. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of other people experiencing similar issues from these products and the company is not taking responsibility. This shampoo, along with the conditioner, did seem to help the regrowth of my hair a little bit. I believe it does do it's job. However, I find it to be very expensive compared to other hair growth brands like Bosley for instance. I was a VIP member for Monat so I even got the discount and with shipping the system was often over $100. Great products, just not necessarily worth the price I'm comparison to other similar systems on the market. I will note for people reading this review that my hair is thin and fine. For me personally this shampoo did not work for my hair type AT ALL. It made my hair feel like complete straw and made it extra knotty frizzy. I believe it just dried out my hair and that it just was not the right shampoo for me personally. However, this shampoo worked great for someone that I know in helping them eliminate dandruff. I do feel that this shampoo cleans and lathers well. Sadly, I have not noticed new hair growth, less hair fall nor my hair seeming to appear thicker or having more volume. Since beginning to use it I have developed multiple pimples on my scalp – potentially from cleaning out the follicles and then sweat (I live in Texas and work out six days a week) getting in to the follicle? I fell in love with this right away, paired with the Glossifying Shampoo after a fresh trim. Used with the brush dryer, you'll see smooth, sleek shine. I followed up with the plant serum in the green bottle & the straightening lotion & some mousse. This changed the entire look of my hair which was frizzy and dull, and turned it into straight, glossy (but not oily or greasy) and nicely set. Only problem I find is after several washings, my hair seemed to "get used to it"and it wasn't detangling as much as in the beginning. Now I am going to find an alternative Conditioner (different brand) for my rotation so I can keep getting that sleek feeling while washing and combing after the shower. My first experience with L'ANZA products was when I received a sample. My hair is very thin and fine, so I'm always looking for products that give it more body. I loved the sample and immediately ordered the thickening shampoo and thickening conditioner when I saw that they were an option. I can't say that the thickening was much different from the samples that I had tried. However, these products do not weigh my hair down and do leave my hair shiny with no loss of color fading. I find that my hair dries much faster and the styling seems to stay very well also. Obviously, I am very happy with these products! This shampoo is the absolute best! I've been using it for quite a few years now. This shampoo leaves my thin hair, full, soft, easy to manage & smells so good. I bought the travel size of this shampoo to test out how it would do on my hair before I splurged on the big bottle. I was also a bit wary of the reviews that claimed it caused hair loss. I have wavy and thick hair with low porosity. I have a very dry, itchy, flakey scalp as well. I read that tea tree oil could help soothe your scalp, so I thought I would try it. I washed my hair as directed. Used about 3 dime sizes for my whole head and massaged it into my scalp. It lathers alright. Not much suds. That made me think that it wasn't cleaning my hair enough so I was tempted to put more shampoo on my head but I did not. The smell is very strong, but it does not linger in your hair post-wash. Usually, my head begins to itch after I wash my hair, but with this shampoo, there was no itch! So I was pleasantly surprised by that. I finished off my hair with the tea tree special conditioner. After I finished showering and dried my hair with a microfiber towel, I noticed no residue on my hair and it felt very clean! I couldn't see any flakes and my scalp wasn't itchy! Just from this, I am very impressed with this shampoo. To address the hair loss comments, I did not notice any significant hair loss when I used the shampoo. I am the type to shed a lot of hair as it is since I have thick hair. I also wash my hair about once a week, so I tend to lose a bit of hair because of that because stray hairs build up over that time. So this might not be good for someone who has thin hair or shampoos frequently. But for me, it works great. Hair loss was about the same or slightly less than usual. I washed my hair about 5 days ago and my hair is a lot less flakey and itchy. It still feels relatively clean with some oil started to build up on my hair. Best shampoo out there for oily dandruff ! Used a $400 prescription shampoo for 15 years and of course it worked, however one just can't Afford to keep using a $400 shampoo every day at a 30 day prescription. I'm a licensed stylist and always heard and was taught that Tea Tree has healing ingredients that Actually work . Never had the chance to use it. One day I thought, I should go to my supply store and try some myself. It worked after only 1 use ! Paul Mitchell has the Best professional products out there ! I got the shampoo and conditioner combo and used it for the first time today. Here are my thoughts: The "tingly" feeling is real. At first I thought it was burning my scalp but it's not. I have extreme dandruff and have tried RX shampoos to help that never worked. My scalp at least "feels" clean. I've seen a lot of reviews about hair falling out and mine did not at all. I have hashimotos disease which causes hair loss to an extreme so I expected clumps again. NOPE. Make sure to brush through your hair before you wash it! This prevents any extra breakage. The small is very strong. I love essential oils for their healing properties but the smells are awful. No exception here! Any tee tree product will smell like this BTW. DISCLAIMER: tee tree can be poisonous in raw form. If you have allergies, do not use this. For people with psoriasis this will not be for you. Keep out of reach from pets as it is poisonous to cats and dogs even as a topical product. Anything with essential oil products can be potentially dangerous and I urge you to research before you buy! For me personally, I think it works great and a lot of the negative comments here are from user error but that's just my opinion.Kelsey

Over six years ago I finally realized that shampoos have almost no positive attributes. They strip the hair shafts of any moisture, any applied colors, and even have negative effects on the hair shafts themselves in removing all natural oils. So I very gingerly at first tried using a hair moisturizer as the only cleansing agent. My hair cutter at that time had told me that conditioners usually caused waxy buildup and to look for products that added moisturizers, not wax. So from those early days I have used that advice as my guide. I have tried many since then, but when I tried Therapy-G I knew I had found what I would stay with, and have used nothing else since. It leaves a very light (very light!) clean scent suggesting natural ingredients on my hair, and my hair is always the shiniest in a group of people. The hair looks really, really healthy with an inner quality of just not being damaged in any way, the way all hair should look. And my hair and scalp are squeaky-clean always. No other product for me, just this one.2hum*er*us

This Therapy G shampoo cleans very well, rinses clean and has a nice fragrance. I am age 65 with a lot of fine hair, and l can easily style after using this product. Have used this for several years.Janie

This is a good shampoo. It gives a good shine to my hair and does not weigh it down. It was the only benefits that I get, not so much for this price… I don't feel that it lathers good so I would say it will not last for a long time (maybe a month). I wash my hair every day so it is a little overpriced for me. Nothing special for this price, just a regular good shampoo. There are so many products on the market that can give you more benefits for this price.Helga

I purchased this shampoo due to noticing more and more hair falling out in the shower. My part also got wider. This shampoo has helped so much! I see new hairs sprouting, its a little longer and more fullness. People have been commenting that my hair looks great! Only reason I knocked off 1 star is I feel like I have shampoo twice to get it to really lather. Sometimes I'll double shampoo with this or a different brand first to really get it to lather and feel clean. I leave it on over a minute before rinsing. Otherwise I will continue to use.Anonymous

Good product! It did not make my hair feel coarse or dry, nor did it strip too much of the natural oil. I appreciate the good ingredients. The smell of the shampoo is good, it smells similar to regular drug store shampoos. The bottle says it takes 3-5 months to really see results and I’ve just been using it a week so I still have yet to see the growth results, but I do really like the formula so far.Lindsey

Excellent hair shampoo !! does what it claims it will do, which is to grow hair, a little pricy for what I normally spend on shampoo but I had to try it out. Its amazing, I started seeing positive results from the first week that I used it. My case is not as severe as a lot of other people, just a little thinning on the top of my head. I just wanted to see if there was something on the market that could help me out. That's when I saw an ad for this shampoo so I decided to try it out. I noticed it has a lot of strong ingredients in it. It puts out a strong vaporing feeling when I rub the shampoo in my hair. It makes my hair really thick that I need to use a lot of hair conditioner to get all the tangles out. All and all I think its a good American made product, definitely feel my hair looks better using it than not using it. I hope they will keep the prices down, because I want to keep using it.Wesley

IT WORKS! I am a man at 60 years of age. I was taking DHEA for health reasons but my hair would start to fall out in clumps after taking it for 1 month. I tried other hair tonics. When I first used this shampoo I hated how it felt. I thought it made my hair feel limp, almost sticky, and a bit greasy. I decided to keep using it since it didn't irritate my skin (I'm very sensitive and shampoos can cause eczema flares for me) and after 2 weeks of daily use I've noticed an incredible change in the feeling and appearance of my hair. Gone is the weird sticky feeling and now my hair is soft, shiny, bouncy, and healthy. My ends feel hydrated and so soft. I've even noticed less hairfall in the shower and in my brush as well. My scalp — normally irritated and itchy — feels normal and healthy. I think this shampoo is so gentle that if you were using something laden with silicones before it doesn't get the buildup off. I recommend using a clarifying shampoo and then integrating these products into your routine. I use this with the Formula 133 conditioner sold by Kiehl's. Highly recommend them both!Danielle

I am always amazed at the range of Kiehl's products – from daily skin care, to treatments, rich body care, family toiletry products, and hair care as well. I've been a fan of Kiehl's skincare for some time, but had never tried any of the haircare until I was given the Amino Acid Shampoo and Conditioner. This shampoo contains amino acid and coconut oil to clean the hair gently, as well as wheat proteins and wheat starch which are claimed to add body. It is described as suitable for all hair types and as a mild shampoo, gentle enough to use every day. It is free of silicone and parabens I am instantly attracted to anything coconut, it reminds me of the beach and summertime. So I would probably still like this product even if it didn't live up to it's claims! Fortunately, I am happy to report that it does. My hair, which is straight, quite fine but abundant, and coloured, felt soft and silky afterwards, and still had it's usual body. There was no issue at all with it feeling "weighed down" or limp – and I do know what that feels like, whenever I have my hair coloured. I have fairly dry, coloured hair with a slightly oily scalp, but both scalp and ends felt perfectly clean after using Amino Acid. It might be counter-intuitive to think of coconut oil with an oily scalp, but in this case it works.\n\nThe lather – I have to say it doesn't lather quite as well as my usual shampoo but, with an oily scalp, I naturally double shampoo. The first shampoo to remove any excess oil, the second to really clean the hair. On the second shampoo, with Amino Acid the lather is rich and creamy, exactly as I want, but also easy to rinse out. The coconut scent afterwards is wonderful, it lingers but is not overpowering. There is nothing better than having been at the beach, hot and sticky, and then washing all of that away with a coconut-scented product. It reminds me of those times.\n\nThe packaging is fairly plain, on the face of it – just a plastic bottle, but what I really like about Kiehl's packaging is the trademark cursive writing, and the fact that all the ingredients and directions are right there conveniently on the bottle,not on a leaflet, so you can read them clearly.\n\nThe price is the only drawback – it is very high for a product that will be used as often as a shampoo. So I would recommend that people use it as I do – as an extra summer shampoo for those times when you have been in the pool every day and need to step up the shampooing. \n\nAnne F.

I waited awhile to do this review, I wanted to see how my hair responded to using Kiehl's Since 1851 Amino Acid Shampoo and Conditioner. I have been using it for 5 months now and I am impressed. I have always been "cheap" when it has come to shampoo and conditioner, but I was having a lot of issues with my hair. My volume was flat, my natural waves always seemed limp, and the worst part was that every time I brushed or washed my hair I was pulling out clumps. I switched to Kiehl's and it is like night and day. My natural waves are back, my hair is growing back in areas where my hair was thinning, my hair isn't falling out by the bunches anymore and my hair is soft and has volume again. I also noticed that I have less issues with my hair feeling and looking greasy and I didn't even realize that was an issue prior to the switch. I convinced my mom to switch too and now this is the only shampoo and conditioner she will use as well!DazedFlamingo

I like this masque, the ingredients are great and it is super thick and detangling but the packaging isn't the best for how thick it is. The smell is pretty strong and floral and it lasts until you wash it again so if you don't like floral smells or strong smells I would skip this. The health of my hair has definitely improved. I have fine but color treated (blonde) dry hair that is fine but I have a lot of hair. The summer thrashed my hair so bad and I could barely brush it dry or comb it out when wet . This mask reversed all of that in 1 use. It's an instant fix type mask. It is too thick to be bottled, it should be a in a jar or tub, so when it gets low, I may remove the top. Very high quality. Moisturizing and antiaging to the look of hair. Young, bouncy healthy locks again! Hooray!Christine

I've been using this for about a week now and not every day. I am noticing a difference. I can't stop touching my hair because I'm not used to having soft hair. My hair is coarse, curly, color treated, dry. I put this product on wet hair, along with some other products, and it feels incredible. I did an experiment and took out this product, using the other same products, and my hair was feeling coarse and dry on the ends. My hair feels like it can actually blow in the wind and stay soft.
