Traveling with bikes can be tricky, but having the right equipment makes all the difference. When looking for the best spare tire bike rack, there are a few key factors to consider before making a purchase. First, examine the construction and durability. A dependable bike rack needs to withstand bumpy roads and changing weather conditions while keeping bikes secure. Look for sturdy materials like steel that won’t bend or flex over time. You’ll also want to evaluate ease of installation. The best spare tire racks don’t require any special tools and can be assembled in a few simple steps.
Of course, you’ll need to think about capacity – how many bikes do you need to transport? Standard racks hold up to 2 bikes, but some support up to 4 bikes for larger families. It’s also crucial to assess fit. Not all tire racks are universally compatible, so double check dimensions to ensure your model vehicle can accommodate the rack. Finally, convenience features like built-in cable locks, reflectors and tilt mechanisms add versatility and should be factored in.
Taking bikes on the road is much simpler with a user-friendly and high-quality spare tire bike rack. As you search for the ideal model, keep design, durability, capacity and fit top of mind. Investing in a solid, dependable rack means smoother travels and stress-free biking adventures for years to come.

Reviews:
SUPER easy to assemble and mount. When the box arrived, I thought if there’s a bike rack in that box, I bet it’s a nightmare to assemble. Push 2 rods into place, 2 nuts, 2 bolts…….DONE!!! Mounting was even easier. HIGHLY recommended. I work at a Jeep dealership and almost always but Mopar accessories. The Mopar spare tire mounted rack was over $150.00 and on a 10 day back order delay. I couldn’t wait that long so I did a bit of searching and found this awesome product.indydice9
Was missing a bolt and has no end caps for the end on top of the tire, which would produce scratches on my car. Easily resolved issues. For the savings, it's still worth it. I purchased the missing bolt fro $0.87 at Home Depot, and bought some silicone covers for $7 that should work to protect the paint. It will hold the bikes, and I'm happy with the product.mamarayrey
A few tweaks are needed to get it to where it wont rub on my bike frame. Over all its what I was needing. I will be posting a review on U tube soon showing my modifications and tweaks. Thanks!victor-brett

Not really sure yet due to the fact I bought it for my son's birthday and it's been to cold to put it on although I'm pretty sure he'll like it itSheri
Easy to assemble. A good value for a bike rack for someone on a budget like myself. I shopped for bike carriers and decided to buy this because the price was reasonable as compared to other bike racks which were hundreds of dollars more. Clear instructions on how to hang bikes. Works well for my bikes.gtrenton
The belts are very bad. I did not even have bicycle connected, but had rack attached for amount 5 month, and belts are already torn and fell apart. Its probably good if you want to use it few times or in short period of time, and for the price its ok, but belts seems like constantly would need to be replaced. Only lasted for 5 month.Andrey

Finally got tired of shoving my bike into the cab of my Jeep and bought the Yak SpareRide…couldn't happier with the purchase. Install was simple and the fold-down feature is convenient. The ratchet clips are a little tricky at first but hold the bikes securely while driving. The locking mount knob is awesome and having a simple cable lock that is keyed-alike with the knob is so convenient. Overall, it's a pretty slick system that is solidly built and well-refined for my needs.RWSheriff
I have a 1998 4Runner with CBI swing out bumper, 315/75R16 (35"x10") tires, and 16×8 -25mm offset rims. Obviously not stock and probably not even close to anyone else's setup. Maybe some jeep owners with big tires will be close. To properly mount, I had to remove the tire bumpers by drilling out the rivets (easy mod). I found that the thru bar fit loosely in the adaptor bracket, so I lined the edges with plastic (cut up container from trash), and hammered into place with rubber mallet. Otherwise, I fear that it will move/vibrate too much over rough roads. I also used Loctite on the allen bolt. With everything installed very tight, the whole setup still moves a lot. Fitment wise, it fits my Ghost Kato hardtail ok. See pics. Because my truck tire doesn't sit 90 degrees, the bike will not fit into one of the mounts (when hanging straight down) which is fine because the bottle holder interferes too. I was able to get the supplied cable lock to fit through both tires, frame, rim, and tire carrier mount. Therefore no one can steal anything without cutting cable, plus if anything does break, it will all fall off and drag behind me while I pull to the side of freeway (avoiding killing school bus full of children). I have little faith in the longevity of this setup, after having driven down all kinds of crazy roads with my tire carrier bumper. Every few years I have to weld up the cracks that form from vibrating. The extra weight of carrier and bikes will accelerate the wear. Something to think about if you have a tire carrier and bomb down dirt roads. I was able to fit my cheap Walmart Mongoose full suspension bike on there with some finagling. If the mounts that hold the bike do not line up to your liking, it is possible to unscrew the bolt and re-drill/tap new mounting locations. My truck sits about 7' tall and barely fits in my 7' tall garage. The bikes sit a few inches higher than my truck. Getting the Ghost Kato on is fairly easy, the Mongoose is heavier and harder to fit. The Kato takes less than 5 minutes to fit and lock down. Both bikes will take maybe 5-10 minutes.Mark
Very easy to use, easy to mount and unmount bikes. Takes up no space. Comes with good bike tie-downs and accessories. Good instructions, very adaptable and clever design. Highly recommendedSteven Y.

Arms are way to short bikes hit each otherDavid ODell
The bike rack looks good quality and is light and easy to mount, my only negative is I fitted this to my Jeep Wrangler with a standard spare tyre and its very tight between the tyre and the center brake light braket, I fixed this by spacing the spare wheel out about 6mm, also the rack is designed for full size bikes, kids bikes dont fit that well.John W
The tire I have mounted on my van has a bar on the right that prevented the bike carrier from being installed levelly. I was able to put two bikes on, but they were leaning too far down to drive safely. If you have room to install this levelly, it might work better for you. Just be careful of the straps that hold it on as they came loose fairly easy which could cause the bike to hit the road while driving.Shelly

Reviews:
Was looking for a bike rack that wouldn't get in the way of opening my back Jeep door. Read the reviews and found this on sale. Great price. Installed in 15 minutes. Some people say that their bikes don't fit properly on this rack. My answer is get creative. I first tried it at the bike shop where I bought my mountain bike. I hoisted the bike and thought they're right, how's this going to fit? A sales guy approached and lifted the bike up putting one of the brackets on the tube that connects the seat and the other on the front v of the frame. It held tight and was very secure. I used the strap enclosed with the rack to stabalize the bike by wrapping it around the bike and rack. Bike did not wiggle or shake at all while driving. I've had two bikes on the rack several times with similar great results. And I like that the holding bar easily folds down tightly against the wheel when you don't want to use the rack. I love this rack because I can still open my back door without a hitch rack in the way, it was inexpensive, and it works great.Jen in Bend
Have used it only once so far for a long road trip and so far so good ! But I must comment on the installation instructions. They’re so bad and Incorrect. One part specifically said based on your tire size, use these parts. It turned out it didn’t require any of those parts and it took and extra couple hours to figure that out- only discovered after watching a you-tube video. Secondly, the plastic “plug” for the lock portion was completely stripped while simply trying to take it out with a screwdriver, like the Instructions said. We had to completely rip apart the whole piece to eventually get it out, likely partially destroying it in the process. WHY would you make that piece plastic in the first place ?? Anyway once we actually got it on, everything seems fine.Jdon
My son purchased and used this rack for 16 months to transport his bike to/from college, and occasionally to bike trails. Yesterday his bike was on rack for two daylight hours before the included lock was pried open and his bike was stolen. Thule offers no warranty or theft assistance, unlike kryptonite who has a theft replacement clause on their high end locks(which he owns but wasn’t using because it was on Thule rack ready to ride that afternoon.) Don’t trust the included lock as it was pried off mid-day on a busy street. Don’t ever leave your bike on this rack and NOT have your car in motion! Don’t get me wrong, he loved the rack until he found out how easy it was to defeat the lock. Thule takes no responsibility, and said they would send the pried off lock pix to their product department. Do yourself a favor add extra locks if you intend to walk away from your bike, say into a coffee shop to study, that’s what happened to him.Scinquanta

This rack seemed like a good option until I installed it. That was no problem but to get our bikes on the rack they would not fit no matter which way I tried. I purchased online thru gander mountain thinking I would be able to return it there for a refund but it was an online purchase and was told I would have to ship it back myself and a return shipping label would cost me $7.50 I waited a few days for the label in my e-mail and it never came soI called customer service and told them I still had no return label. They immediately e-mailed the info and I had to get to Fed X to return shipping ,A real pain. I do not reco.mend this product to anyone that can't return it in person when you realize your bikes don't fit.Nysasquatch60
Received carrier today and finally got it installed after performing one trick. My spare sits kind of low to the bumper so initially i didn’t have enough clearance for the brackets that attach to the bumper. Luckily I was able to raise the tire a couple inches by using different lug bolt holes to attach to the tire. That gave me just enough space. Seems solid. Will revisit once I actually use it.m.
Like it, simple, solid, no sway or bounce. Rack installation is simple and quick. Bike placement and tie down strap arrangement takes a while to determine a secure arrangement. Took me 1/3 the time to rehang bikes after first trip use. Keep an eye on how close to the ground the bikes hang before strapping them down. Seems the manufacturer advises 12 or 15 inches off the pavement. My second swagman brand bike carrier purchase, both are quality designed products.R.r.

Ordered bike mount for my 1978 cj7, and it fit perfectly. I would definitely recommend this product. I'm very satisfied.Turtlehead
This bike rack was exactly what I was looking for with a spare tire on the back of my car. It's perfect for when I need to bring a bike or two somewhere to start a ride. Also I hope I win $1000 in the sweepstakes!Bobby
The bike rack itself was fine but did not fit my car. The customer service representative said I would have to pay shipping to return it even though they did not state that the bike rack was not universal in their description. Eventually customer service agreed to only charge me half on the shipping cost to return. However, when the refund was posted to my bank account they did not honor their agreement and charged me the full shipping cost to return the bike rack.Joanne H.

Having fenders is no problem, Just drop the arm just in front of the Fender. My E-Bike is 55 lbs & this rack has no problem supporting the weight. Loading my bike is very fast & easy. The front cradle holds the front tire securely & the rear tire sits in a shallow channel. Kuat does offer a ramp witch would make this process even easier. The integrated cable locks are a good way to lock your bike during transport. The Rack over all fills heavy duty & solidly built. Cosmetically it’s very beautifully painted too. Cons, The key hole to the Cable locks has a little spring loaded cover in the hole. So you have to put the key in at a angle to push it out of the way. It took me a Minet to figure that out.Mike
Ok, I love my biking and hate my bike racks. To say that most are put together with string and bailing wire is an understatement. I had one brand that was so top heavy that I honestly thought I would lose my bikes along the highway somewhere. That is until I bought the Kuat from REI. Expensive!!!! I bought the NV and then the doubler so I could have 4 bikes at once. I have been beyond impressed with this rack. Solid, stable, easy to use and very secure. Every part of this rack has been thought out and engineered to perfection. I know this sounds kind of over the top for a review but as a dentist, I look for details and precision in everything. This delivers in spades. I cannot say enough good things about it. So just suck up the price and appreciate the incredible quality that you are going to get for the money.DrKK
Trek Farley 5.0 (large frame) with 27.5 x 4.5 tires (Bontrager Gnarwhal Fat Bike Tire). Kuat phat bike kit installed. Cradles in lowest position. The ratchet arm will not come over the top of the tire without leaning the bike, swinging the arm up, then centering the bike/tire under the arm. Attached is the video Kuat sent me. This metjod is fine for one bike, but with 2+ bikes that need to be leaned, the other bikes get in the way. Kuat support says "Unfortunately at this time we do not have a solution". It seems like a nice rack otherwise, but Kuat's specs are misleading.Stephen K

it works on my jeep tire, booboo
This rack did not work for use with 2 mountain bikes. The bike holders are too close together, only about 3 inches apart, not adjustable. Maybe it would work for 2 road bikes, but it wasn't even close for ours. Otherwise it looked fine, quite easy to install. The other problem was ordering from a private seller on Walmart's site… expensive mistake if you're returning it. The cost was $134, with "free shipping" but when I returned it they subtracted the shipping cost and only credited me $114. It cost me $30 to ship because you can not return private shipper items to Walmart. So a $50 loss. Not a happy biker.Sadbiker
They ran out of the product I wanted Made contact and did try to source one What a shame , however stuff happensmmcneill007

Bikes securely fit on rack. Works well at an affordable price.
its a really strong product but for my application, 21 Jeep Wrangler, it hangs on the brake light mount, behind my tire and because that mount is plastic or fiberglass the bike carrier slides or rotates and doesnt stay parallel to the ground, so the bikes are always on a 45 degree angle. Is that the fault of the product, i dont think so but i wish they had a fix for it. Do i use it, absolutely and i will find a fix for it.vinnie c
Works great, holds the bike securely.Michelle S

bro, dont buy this product. im tellin yall it is a waste of money and time. that darn thing was so hard to install it took me and my bros three hours to figure out. total suckage
Just purchased the spare tire bike rack today. Got home and tried to install it on my 2011 Rav4 Sport. Everything looked good, but when I went to install the mounting bracket I noticed that the bracket would not go on since the center of the mounting flange (Sportrack part) was not wide enough in the center. The spare tire mounting flange on the truck has a center piece that helps you hold the spare tire centered in place when you are removing or installing the spare. This center piece will not allow the Sportrack mounting bracket to be installed. Either the bracket needs to have a bigger center opening or you'd need to take a grinder to the spare tire mounting bracket to remove the piece to allow the mounting bracket to be installed flush. Everywhere I looked it said that this rack would fit my truck as long as I didn't have a backup camera. I don't have a backup camera. I'm posting this so other people with Rav4's don't waste their time like I did today. Back to Canadian Tire to return it tomorrow. Waste of gas and time. By the way, I noticed the box had been opened before and probably returned…. another Rav4 owner perhaps… Product did look good, but wrong information about what cars it will fit on is not good.armchairpilot
Think twice about buying this product (and anything from SportRack), it has 1 year warranty for a reason. I thought this was perfect for my Jeep Liberty. The rear tire mount model was what the vehicle needed. This carrier has a moulded inner ring to thread most vehicle's spare tire mount. The Liberty has 3 threaded bolts for the spare. Unfortunately, the patterns do not match perfectly so almost all of the weight is on one single bolt. It is not universal, look at your vehicle first. My road bike is light enough to be supported, but add a second bike and the sag becomes very apparent. I never made it to a 3rd bike. In fact, I never ever put more than one bike on again. I used my van for transporting the family bikes, so this was liveable but not the end of the story. The locking mechanisms rust out very quickly. The top lock rusted out immediately and so it was useless to lock your bike to and leave the vehicle. FYI, CT does sell replacement locks at $30 a pop (Part #40-1028-4) for a reason. This must be common to SportRack locks. Since I rarely leave my bike, this was also livable. I could still transport from point A to B, ride and then put it back on. (At this point I should have returned the unit but was not smart enough not too, read on for the gripping conclusion). Finally, while on the way back from a ride, I got a flat. Unfortunately, there is also a locking mechanism to the tire mount. This had also rusted out. No amount of WD-40 and muscle could unlock it. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, I needed to drive on a flat until I could find someone with a saw. I had to saw the unit's lock of to access my spare. Of course, this was just after the year mark. By then the warranty was over and everyone shrugged their shoulders. Thule owns SportRack, they also said "too bad". Not sure why Thule would put their brand at risk for this line. This is just an inferior product, you are not saving money. Save your bike, your aggravation and your money. P.S. This product is not in SportRack's latest catalog on their website so buyer, truly, truly beware of this model in particular and SportRack in general.UncleDaddyBob

Broke after two uses.ia53930
Bike rack better than expected fit on the tire great and its adjustable for wider tires a plusjwamey21
This rack is useless for two bicycles. Nearly lost ours three times. Once, one of the bikes front wheel dragged along the highway for a mile or more before it was discovered behind our camper. Fortunately it was able to roll at an angle or the tire and rim would have been destroyed. Because of the wide offset of the weight, they should warn customers that it will not carry a Townie style bike.Kenny V.

I was recently involved in an auto collision where my car was rear ended by an inattentive driver. On the back of my car was the T2 and on the T2 was my beloved C60. The impact of the collision was severe enough to deploy all of my car's interval safety devices. After I had settled down I went to check up on my bike; fearing the worst I was prepared to see a mangled up bike. I was not prepared for what I saw. The T2 was bent at a severe angle, the unused carrier trays were disloged and badly damaged BUT the trays where my bike sat were nearly intact. Except for some cosmetic damage, a mangled rear wheel and a broken rear derailleur hanger (my shop is currently inspecting the bike just to be sure) the bike appears to have escaped largely unscathed. Moreover, the body repair shop person told me that with the T2 absorbing the brunt of the impact, my car avoided more severe damage. So thank you Thule for making such a great product and thank you T2 for giving up your "life" to protect me, my car AND my bike.Just another cyclist
I recently bought the T2 Classic pre assembled from my local bike shop. My friends have the same rack on their trucks. I've used them many times. I love the fitment of the bikes. My wheelbase is 47" with 26" tires. After installing the rack on my truck, I found that my bike wouldn't fit. The back tire was sticking way off the back of the rack and the locking arm was nearly vertical. I checked the manual and it said that it will fit up to 48" bikes. I again checked the manual for fitment and noticed that the front wheel support cup was reversed for both bikes. So I promptly removed them and reversed them. My bike fits great now BUT one of the holes was stripped out during initial installation of the front tire cup by the dealer. Bolting into plastic isn't really the strongest support system. So now I need to either get a replacement piece or try to repair the one I've got. A simple solution would be to manufacture a third mounting hole which is not equal spacing from the other two holes. Then this problem would never happen. The wheel cup could never be reversed. But since this product has been manufactured for years, it's not really an option to change it. If the front wheel cup had a better mounting system, I would give this rack 5 stars. Easily adjustable rack. Such a nice addition to my truck.Colin
