For the price, Ugly Stick is difficult to beat. The blended fiberglass and carbon technology gives great feel and durability, especially the tip. Same as rods at twice the price, IMHO. These 9 footers are great for surf, for long casts. I wish these were MH instead of M. Need a tad more backbone. But they are still very good. They were not new but in the condition advertised. I’ve owned the 4’6” UL GX2 for something like.. 9 years now. I had owned a Shakespeare UL spinning combo before this and snapped the rod while trying to free my lure from a branch. I knew that these rods were supposed to be tough so that’s what I gravitated towards when it came to getting a new ultralight setup. Pros: The action of this rod is great. My Shakespeare UL was so whippy that hooksets were awful when it came to the smaller bass I would catch at times. This has enough backbone to still get a decent hook set for the occasional bass but excels at throwing 1/32oz jig & 1” Mister Twisters for panfish. The durability has been amazing, I’ve caught everything from creek chubs and shiners to a large walleye and everything in between. I used the reel that it came with in a combo for 7-8 years until I had to replace it with a Shimano Sienna 500 which has been a great reel. Pros: Good power for a UL rod, not too whippy. Affordable. The durability is unmatched, after this many years the EVA foam grip is still in good condition and it’s held up to the abuse of being tossed around and catching some large fish. Cons: I don’t have much to gripe about, I got exactly what I was looking for – a rod for panfish that isn’t brittle and is affordable. I do wish the action was a bit faster, it fishes more like a moderate to moderate-fast rod and hooksets on a bobber and worm (something I rarely use) are tough at times. If you’re doing bobber fishing it’d be worth it to step up to a light instead of ultra light IMO. It’s a bit heavier than similar rods I’ve handled but with it being a lighter power rod to begin with it isn’t something that bothers me. I do wish, however, that Shakespeare made a TWO PIECE 7-foot MH Ugly Stik GX2. If so, I would’ve already owned 1-2 for Catfish and Carp. 7’ one-piece rods are just too difficult to carry in my small car and with bottom fishing I don’t need the extra sensitivity. Works well and stays together. Like others said, you just have to twist and push each piece together and they hold just fine. Works for a wide range of situations. The rod is a bit stiffer than most medium actions feel but works fine. I usually pack it into a backpack, but I wish it came in a more sturdy case for travel. So, I just bought 2 Eagles and one HMX to replace aging HMX and an Eagle that I broke. All are two piece rods, which makes travel much easier (every one piece rod I have owned have snapped in transport or stowage). So, the two piece is a big plus. The action that the Eagle rods (I prefer Fast/Medium, but have one Medium/ Medium) are superior to any other rods I have used in my time fishing, furthermore, I am a certified NY Fishing Guide and most of the time, I give my clients the Eagles to use because of the excellent feel, which allows intermediate anglers to actually control the casting much better than other rods. The cork handles are superior to any rubber or man-made handles and are very hardy design, resisting breakouts of the material. Reel seats are good and rarely, if ever, loosen up. I mostly use the Eagles for lighter spinning situations: river smallmouth, trout, panfish and when it is necessary to use a very light lure and light intro. However, they do well in regular bass fishing or lake situations, if the size and action of the rod are appropriate. The HMX is used more for heavier introductions and fishing for bigger species: bass, pike and whatever else. Same things: two piece, Fast/Medium action, good grip and reel seat. With all that said, yes, they do break when stepped on, sat on or yanking a lure out of a tree in a way that would break any rod. I fish a lot of hours and my equipment gets a lot of use, so that is par for the course for any manufacturer. To sum it all up, the Eagle is my go to spinning rod for anything that is under a half ounce lure and definitely for the size 5-7 Rapalas or smaller Mepps or Panther Martins. The HMX is my favored rod for fishing larger, heavier lures including very large Zaras, Spinnerbaits and rubber jerkbaits. Since my focus on fishing is a multi-species approach and I refuse to get involved in the virtual bass boat arms race, spinning is my main focus. These rods are perfect for me.FastJohnny
I purchased the Eagle 8'0 rod last year for bluegill and crappie fishing. I have always loved Fenwick rods and was very pleased with the new Eagle series. I like using long rods for panfish as I feel there is a more casting ability with the micro jigs I use. Well I have only used my rod 5 times so far but I must say this rod can handle it all. I have caught my targeted species as well as a fish I was not planning on catching. I wad fishing my local park for crappie and bluegill using a 1/48 oz black grub when I was bit. The bite was slow and mushy at first, then my drag was screaming. After a 25 minute battle on 4 lb test, I finally was able to land the mystery fish. A 20lb carp. Wow….I was not expecting him. The rod handled beautifully and held pressure, enabling me not to loose the fish since I fish with barbless hooks. The rod had the back bone to handle this behemoth never failed. Bought 2 combos last month. Rod is really strong. I've got nothing bad to say about it. I've snagged a lot of weeds and whatnot but I'm never worried that this rod would break. This combo has been dropped and kicked (accidentally of course). But it's really sturdy. My wife and I love this combo and we've caught a lot of fish with it. Purchased the 2 piece 6'6'' GX2 spinning combo. Besides feeling a little heavy for a medium power rod, after a few weeks of only fishing on the weekends, the top piece would occasionally fly into the water when I would make a cast. I purchased this combo specifically for targeting bass in impoundments. Great casting action for light hardbody lures as well as soft plastics with a variety of jigheads while also providing plenty of feedback around structures, on the bottom and when struck at by fish. Also a very comfortable rod for the price. Reel has a nice, smooth feel to it and is seems robust due to use of quality materials. Spooled with high quality mono.
I bought this rod and reel on a whim because it was cheap and I figured it'd be good to have a cheaper rod and reel for my wife to use. Well, I got it yesterday, lined it with 10 lb Spiderwire, took it to the local state park, and when I casted it for the first time it flew and casted very smoothly and when I started reeling the line in the reel was surprisingly smooth and balanced. All in all, this rod and reel is an extremely good value for even the most avid fisherman. I had gone to Dick's Sporting Goods earlier in the day yesterday and purchased a brand new $100 Daiwa baitcaster rod and reel, and this spinning rod and reel was a perfect companion to have close by for throwing smaller lures and casting far. I have had mine for a couple of months. Been used 6 or 7 times. It is wound with Spiderwire Camo 8lb braid. I have a wonky right shoulder so I cast kind of sidearm… pretty good at it too. This Rod and Reel, with braided line shoots that line out like butter and I have had to adjust the thrust or I end up well onshore.. The reel retrieves as smooth as any reel I have ever had. The thing is, that I compare this combo to my other and much more expensive gear. It stands on its own just fine. I just bought an Ultra Light Trion combo. Haven't fished with it yet but winding on the 6lb mono, the reel is as smooth as the President. I am about to be done "gearing up" my new Fishing Yak. Pflueger President Combo 6940 with Pflueger 7' Medium Action President Rod I purchased this combo from Cabelas about a month ago for $79.99. I normally fish Shimano baitcasters but I was needing something that was capable of casting lighter lures for crappie but yet strong enough for walleye. I read up on reviews about Pflueger President reels and it convinced me to give one a try. I am so happy I did. The rod tip is fast and the backbone is solid. My "go to" rod has been my Mojo Bass mated with a Shimano Chronarch, but ever since buying this combo I haven't picked it back up. I would have happily paid $300 for this setup. The only issues that I have had is the reel seat tends to work loose frequently but I have found that you can really give it a good tightening without stripping the threads, problem solved. The other issue is I feel the reel is a bit noisy but i am new to spinning reels so this may be normal. I will be buying a few more of these really soon. Great product at a fraction of the cost!!! I have owned a President reel for many years. I use it on my pike rod. When my ultralight finally wore out, I had the idea of a Pfluger combo. The very first evening I used this rod, I set it down on a pier to help my son land a big bass. I no more than turned around and I heard a “plunk” the rod was gone! I grabbed another rod from the truck and kept fishing. Later that evening my son hooked another large fish along the pier. As he fought the fish, my rod tip appeared from the depths! It rose up three feet into the air. I grabbed the rod and hauled it up. The hook had broken off so I set it aside. The next morning I rigged it up thinking that the smooth action would be gone. The correct info I shall give now, The 7’ rod reel combo has a 3500 series reel, not a 3000 series like mentioned. the 7’ is a fast action, not extra fast like the 6’6” elite spinning rod. And there are 8 guides on the rod. Not 7. It is Also rated for 6-14lb line and a 1/4 oz- 5/8 oz lure. Great rod and reel none the less. Even better when on sale. I purchased the previous generation of these rods where they changed from ceramic guides to “stainless steel “ and am not impressed. The guides all rusted out on both the inside and where they attach to the rod. The rod has become worthless as the cost and labor to replace the guides is more than a new rod so i am left with a solid blank with no usable guides. I bought this last month and it showed up timely and looked great. I used the rod for dorado for the first time and unfortunately during playing a 20 lb dorado, the second section broke. Ordered the 10' with 6000 reel after my wife attempt to surprise me with a rig from Amazon fell through. I went directly to Penn and ordered. The price pint was actually better for the size rod and reel and the shipping was fast. The product arrived in good shape and seems to be of a high quality. It winds fast, smooth and quiet. I will be heading out to Oak Island this weekend to make my first surf casts. I will only change this review if there is something wrong this weekend. Otherwise, very happy!VictheCatcherman

This is a fantastic quality pole. I live in an apartment with carpet and popcorn ceilings, yet it's so sturdy. I was scared at first because I used to pole dance at a club, and I had high expectations. This met them all. Took a while to put up, but was well worth it. I bought the 9’6” surf rod last year and paired it with the new Gosa reel when it came out several months after. This rod is absolutely great. I read nothing but great reviews on stripers online about this rod so I figured I’d give it a shot. Boy am I glad I did! The rod is so light weight and has great action. It has serious backbone and can pull big fish in. I have a lot of rods and this one is definitely one of my top 3 favorites. If you want to learn more about this rod stripers online has plenty of great info on just about all rods. This rod is definitely a must have for a surf fisherman. It’s a fairly nice combo. New to fishing, so after my first experience I would recommend to other newbies to get a spinner that is automatic and not the one you have to flip it back n forth when casting. String kept getting tangled around the spool with my inexperience and had to cut it off a few times and start over. If you don’t mind that method, it’s ok once you get the hang of it. This rod is a tank. I bought it in a trip to fort Myers beach in 2020. I caught dozens of fish in the surf and in the bay from lady fish and snapper to shark and speckled trout. I flew home with it in my checked bag. I used it for two years catching hundreds of catfish and carp. Last we I drove down to myrtle beach and caught dozens of pompano, whiting, flounder and drum. I roped off catching a 31” bull red in the surf. If you want an affordable rod that will literally catch pretty much anything you can hook up with on the shore, pier, dock or beach. I just bought another EliteTech saltwater spinning rod. I have three different actions for different applications in the Everglades, but also use the medium lights for walleyes in Canada freshwater. These rods are worth hauling everywhere for their great sensitivity and light weight, not to mention the beautiful appearance. I own four and have tested the warranty on a couple of occasions. I have yet to find another rod at $100 that I like more than this one. I got the ML version with split grips. The split grip models are advertised for kayak and wade fishing because they have a shorter butt length. It works perfectly, it is so nice no longer having the butt of the rod hitting my pfd while I'm casting or working a fish in. The ML has plenty of backbone and I've pulled in a couple new PBs with it since putting it to work. I love this rod. It casts super crisp and accurately. It's also ridiculously sensitive. I can feel the braid texture through the guides and when I'm bouncing jigs on the bottom I really feel things out. I put a Vanford on my ML and that combo is just stupid light, I can cast all day with it and never get fatigued. I'm looking to get a M for my next combo. One potential drawback for any kayak fishermen reading this, is the diameter of the split grip corks. I don't know if this applies to the standard handle version, but the diameter on the split grips is smaller than what you will be used to for inshore rods. It's more in-line with what you'd expect on a freshwater rod. For most rod holders this won't matter one bit. Personally though, I run the Stealth QR2s and they work by pinching the rod in place with a rubber cam. This rod handle is just a hair too skinny to be solidly gripped by the cam. If you run the Stealth QR1s though, I suspect it would be fine.WrongTurn
I bought this rod during fall trout season last year to replace a broken St. Croix rod. The model I chose was the 7 foot medium-lite split grip. I used this rod to throw MirrOlure heavy-dines. I hate it when someone breaks a rod from freeing up a snag and then calls the rod garbage. The rod is not garbage but the owner doesn't know how to free a snag. When you get snagged which right off the bat is your fault. You don't pull back on the rod like you just caught a fish. That can break the rod because unlike a fish there's no give in the snag. You point the rod at the snag and pull straight back. Hold the spool so you're just pulling the line and not using the rod at all. You'll either pull out the snag or break the line/leader. Which is much better than breaking the rod. The HMG is a good rod and won't break if you know what you're doing.OldMtnMan
I am a Fenwick loyal customer. I’ve had several rods and zero issues. I bought this rod in 7’ medium fast and was absolutely loving it for a couple hours until I hooked a nice striper. He hit, I set the hook, and SNAP. Rod broke in half on first hook set. I literally was in complete shock!!! I’ve never had any rod, let alone a Fenwick snap on a hook set. The bad: rod tip design occasionally catches the line if there’s any slack reeling in and despite an extra fast the rod doesn’t load up as well imo resulting in some unsuccessful hook sets from a horizontal distance 30+ ft away. Bought the rod last fall, fished it 30-40 times. The handle came apart on the inside, like the epoxy let loose and I almost lost my reel. This also caused all the cork to come apart. Never in my life have I had a rod break in that fashion. We fish all the major brands; Favorite, 13 Fishing and St. Croix and only has one other failure on a 13 rod where we snapped the upper section trying to remove a snag. I bought this rod about a year ago and hadn’t really fished with it a ton because it was my nice trout setup and I only fish for trout about 2 times a year if I’m lucky so this rod was barely used. I went up to lake Wallenpuapak and had been fishing with this rod with little fake minnows for bluegill and the occasional little bass. I hooked about a 1 pound smallmouth with it and the bass tan and the very tip of the rod snapped just above the 3rd eye. I had about fell in love with the rod up until that very point. I instantly went to check the fenwick website to buy another but looking at other reviews on the hmx series this isn’t a uncommon occurrence. I would not recommend.Nikolas
I absolutely love Fenwick HMX spinning rods. I own two 7' medium action and two 8.6 medium action rods. We use them primarily for silver (coho) salmon here in Alaska. Ours have been strong, durable, up to the task on fast, powerful, hard charging fish, and are a joy to fish with. All are lightweight and just plain beautiful. I love the steel gray blanks and tough looking split cork handles. All have performed flawlessly for several seasons, and we've experienced no issues with construction and workmanship. Just today I blundered into a rod that's hard to find in my area of Alaska, a Fenwick HMX 8.6 casting rod.
