20 Best Spray Gel For Fine Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

I had been looking for a new hair shine spray. I have medium/dark brown hair with blonde highlights, and my hair is very dry and damaged from using heat and dying/bleaching in the past. I’ve had my hair colored in just about every color you could think of so my hair is very damaged. It’s getting way better now but a few months ago it was completely unmanageable. I like using shine sprays because they make your hair so much healthier and glossy looking. My current shine spray is Garnier Brilliantine Shine Glossing Spray. It was only 7 dollars, has great ingredients, and gives amazing shine without looking or feeling greasy. I had been thinking about getting this matrix shine spray for awhile. Ulta was having a huge sale on matrix products so I used that opportunity to pick this up. It was only 10 dollars so I got it half off. I usually LOVE matrix products, and even though they’re pricey they tend to be worth it especially when you have more problematic hair. This was a disappointment. First of all the smell is terrible. Usually their products smell great but this literally smells like those lemon hand wipes you get in little single packets. It’s not unbearable but definitely not a good smell especially for a hair product. Nobody wants their hair to smell like lemon scented cleaning supplies. Good thing the smell doesn’t last because it’s not a good one for a hair product. Now, I could put that behind me if the product worked well but it didn’t. It literally didn’t add any shine or gloss to the hair. It didn’t feel heavy or greasy or sticky on the hair, but it was basically like it did nothing. Since I got this half off I wasn’t TOO mad but still disappointed. I’ve tried a lot of matrix products and this was the first one that had been disappointing. Definitely don’t recommend. I hesitated to buy given the mixed reviews but have had great results. Worked much like a good mousse but easier to apply and less residue. My hair type is thick (as in a lot of hair) but fine (as in the texture is straight and silky) so it pretty much lays against my head. This is my go to hair spray. I normally will purchase this from TJ Maxx and it works really well. It has a light/medium hold and smells amazing. I also like that I can use it and not have to wash my hair the next day. It doesn’t leave the hair stiff or sticky which is really nice ! I am going through a cancer that has returned from an earlier bout with breast cancer and had a mastectomy. It returned in my lymph nodes two years ago and I have to be on hormone therapy forever. It has so many side effects and one of the worst is hair thinning…very thinning. I have white hair and it is now very fly away and hard to manage. I am so happy with this product as I can use it on my hair and not have that scrunchy feeling from gel or mousse. I have medium textured wavy to slightly curly hair. When I let it do its thing, I don't like anything that feels scrunchy when it dries naturally. So I use the same products that I would when blowing out my hair as they do not weigh it down and simply scrunch with an absorbent towel for a few minutes and spray this in lightly and my hair turns our wonderful. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this hairspray!!! My old favorite stopped working for me after I started coloring my hair. I went through many different hairsprays to find a new favorite, and this one was the clear winner. I have always loved hairsprays that provide good hold without build-up and without feeling hard/ crunchy. In other words, hairsprays that don't feel like hair sprays. The other issue I have with a lot of hairsprays is that they tend to dry out my already frizzy hair. Not so with Bb Holding Spray. I also love that it is a pump vs. a spray. It's easier to control the amount of spray you use with a pump, and you can still use the rest of the product if the sprayer gets clogged – either by soaking the sprayer or by dumping it in a new spray bottle. I've had a lot of problems with sprays that become clogged halfway through the bottle. I hate throwing money away. BTW – I've never had an issue with this sprayer getting clogged – yay!! I'm not sure how this hairspray would work on other hair types, but it works great on my long, wavy, frizzy hair. Because of my hair type, I don't need a really firm hold; just something to hold the style after blow drying.HateMyHair

I have very flat hair, I usually spray dry shampoo to give it volume. This works!! I sprayed it in after shower and let hair dry naturally. And it’s got volume on top, so much so my bf noticed. I am happy I have come across this product. It's not too heavy for my fine hair and provides enough support to get me through the day. It has a nice smell, it's cheaper than the other products I used to use. It does not spray wet either, so you don't end up coated with hairspray after spraying your hair.Natalie B.

I used this hairspray for years and it always worked great for my fine hair. I don't understand why the need to change a product that does well as is. Matrix recently changed the packaging and seems to have changed the formula too. It used to spray out a very fine mist that provided great hold, but didn't weigh down fine hair. The new packaging has a different nozzle that sprays out a much heavier and spotty spray. I actually get large droplets sprayed on my face and everywhere but where it is supposed to go. The new nozzle gets clogged easily, which never used to happen with the old packaging. I thought I was maybe mistaken in the comparison until I found an unused can of the old formula in the back of my storage closet. The difference was amazing. I will no longer be buying this product. If Matrix brings back the old packaging/formula I would reconsider, but in the meantime I have been trying out other competing products (a pricey endeavor) and have found a better product in the Paul Mitchell Super Clean Firm Style spray.AbbyD

I recently bought the dyson AirWrap in the spring sale, and I was getting soooo frustrated with it because my long, fine (but very thick) hair just would NOT hold the curls. They fell out within 20 minutes! I really didn’t want to return it though, so I started looking for products that might help. That led me to this spray. I love Oribe products, and this seemed like a good option because it simultaneously gives my hair some grip, and also dampens it slightly (which is critical for the dyson airwrap). I start by sectioning my hair (I do three layers), and I spray this onto each section right before I use the barrel attachments. After each section, I do a small spritz of the Living Proof Control hairspray as well. The first picture is my hair when using this spray, and the second is without. Worth every penny!Katiwould

This is truly an amazing product. I have hair loss issues on and off and found this product last year. I have very straight hair; this product makes my hair abundant and vibrant. At first, I worried about the alcohol smell that it has as I am very particular about what I put in my hair due to the hair loss issue, but I alternate with Sisley's Hair Rituel Volumizing Spray (also a wonderful product), and I have not had any negative reactions. I usually spray at the roots, massage in scalp very gently and wait around a few minutes for my hair to be less damp; finally, I blowdry. So, a few things. This has a high alcohol content. Which makes it SUPER drying if sprayed liberally. When I first got it and started using it, it had an instant va-va-voom blowout effect. Which can look weird at first, because the alcohol made my hair a bit stiff like straw. But, I experimented a bit and hit a sweet(er) spot when I'd spray on some leave-in conditioner on my hair (not at the roots but lower down) and then use this concentrating on the roots but also spraying it all the way down. I cut down how much I used, but realized I still need a fair bit of it for it to work. It made my hair look pretty good then! Buuut, it barely seems to have an effect anymore, weirdly. I used it today, for e.g., and there's no extra lift, volume or boost. Maybe my hair is a bit straighter with it. But that's all. And I'm not sure why but that initial effect only lasted a month-ish? For reference I have very fine AND thin hair. It can get super greasy / is at its best when washed daily. I'd get the small size if you're curious, and give it a try. When it worked, it really did work – it's one of only two products that has ever given me visible lift. The blowout effect would last for a few hours, but would wear off as the day progressed, so, keep that in mind. My 4-star rating is assuming it had retained the initial effect.GlowOverHere

I really love this stuff, but from reading the reviews I see where other people thought it was going to do much more than it actually does.. which is probably from the wording on the bottle. I've used this stuff since a hairdresser put it on my 14 year-old self and my over bleached hair. Back then, I didn't even read the bottle I just knew I could straighten the life out of my hair then spritz this on and it would look semi healthy again. NOW my hair is MUCH healthier and I probably get a bottle of this once every year. All it does for me is adds a healthy looking layer of shine to the dull spots of my hair after styling. I bought this because I couldn't find the Sexy Hair Curl Revival spray I used before. Thought this was the same kind of refresh spray per the description of the product. It is not. I should have read the ingredients before buying, the second ingredient is alcohol and it showed. at first my hair looked nice and then it got almost dried out and crunchy feeling. I have semi thick hair and a lot of it. While this did give great volume immediately after blow dry, it was gone and back to how my hair usually looks after an hour. I tried this maybe 4 or 5 times and same thing each time. I did it differently too and tried to hold with Velcro rollers as well and made no difference on my thicker hair.Chelsea

I assumed when it said "style as usual" that doesn't necessarily mean with heat, but I think it does. I haven't gotten much volume when I use this while air drying my hair, BUT it enhances my waves and makes them way more noticeable and my hair very soft, and you can use a lot of it. As of now I'm giving Verb Volume Spray a 4 star rating. I have very fine, thin damaged hair. I used a hair mask treatment that has a ton of oils in it and left my hair like silk right before I used Verb. My hair came out about the same amount of "pouf" as usual – maybe a teeny bit less.. I'm not looking for extreme hair – I just don't want it hanging limply. I slept on it and in the morning a quick hit with a curling brush and some hairspray and my hair looked fine. Slept on it again (I can usually go a couple of days). When I left the house my hair looked good but about 4 hours later, it's losing it's shape (bob with some layers). It's still not totally flat but heading that way. I'm hoping that with normal shampoo and conditioner it works for a couple of days. Will update. What I loved about it was it felt like water when I applied – no tangling or pulling. Same as I used the blow dryer. I feel like there is a good chance it is easy to wash out. I've been feeling like other products that "pouf" more are damaging my hair so I can probably live with a bit less if it washes well. I do really hope I can get 2 days!pattiep64

I hardly ever use a product until I empty the bottle. Sometimes I get bored with a product, sometimes I don’t really feel like the product does much, so I will put it on the shelf and forget about it. This was not the case with the thickening treatment! I used it daily and loved what it did to my hair. On top of the long term affects of the treatment, I also loved how it calmed down my root area (which can be a little frizzy) and made my hair feel manageable, shiny, and healthy. This scent is very light and subtle. It did not smell too perfume-y or like chemicals either… The thing I loved the most about this product is it did not make my hair feel dirty or like I had a bunch of product in my hair. I lost half my hair from iron deficiency and had to cut the rest very short to match up to new hair growth but was still very thin overall. The first time i used this on my damp hair after my normal styling products,my hair looked instantly twice as thick. Even my mom said my hair looked suddenly thicker without me even pointing it out. I will never buy these products ever again. I used the thickening treatment, growth drops, and root spray one time. It completely changed the texture of my hair, made it rough and hard and when I combed my hair it came out it clumps. I lost about 3-4 inches of hair because of these products. I had shoulder length hair and now my hair is to my ears. It ended up being choppy and uneven, and I had to cut the damaged hair off. I am completely devastated and just cried seeing how these products ruined my hair. I wouldn't recommend these products to no one. I have to go through a hot summer wearing wigs now. I received this hairspray complimentary from Influenster to try and have been giving it a good go. First, it has a lovely scent. It’s fresh and that’s such a nice change from most hairspray. Secondly, it has a nice hold without making my hair even a little sticky. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I didn’t feel like it held my curls all day, that said, I have very long curl resistant hair and do feel like it would perform better on shorter hair or hair that needed less support. Also, I could still touch my hair and put my fingers through it…which I really liked. It is more than 16 ounces which will last me basically forever and I’m happy about that because they say if you continue to use it it is good for your hair. This product is just okay! It doesn't really do all that I want from a luxury product line like [brand:briogeo]. I've tried and love many of there other products but not this one! Especially with a Finishing Spritz I'm looking for high shine, a little bit of added hold and some additional lasting scent. The shine was just minimal. The beautiful desired added shine I saw when first applied seemed to kind of "wear out" or just plain went away after about an hour. The added hold was almost none existent. Now I wasn't looking for this product to hold my hair back in a ponytail but I was looking for it to atleast tame the fly aways. That lasted about 5 min before I saw flyaways again. This product is great! The bottle was a bit large and cumbersome to use because it was of the larger size, but the product itself was easy to use and comfortable. It did not make my hair crunchy or stiff. It gave a flexible hold that lasted for most of the day. I have thick slightly wavy Asian hair, and not many products are very good at making Styles hold. I love this stuff. It gently holds my hair the way a best friend would after a long night out. It smells great and my hair still looks nice the next day. My hair is not thin, but not thick either – somewhere in the middle. As it got longer it started to weigh more so I ended up with very flat hair, which also gets greasy very quickly. I am a die-hard fan of this—have been using it for 4 years on my fine hair after my stylist recommended and buy 2 bottles at a time so I never run out. I have never had more volume or sexier hair, both when my hair was shorter just above my shoulders and as long as my bra line. It smells fabulous- like amber coconut but isn’t scented enough to mask whatever perfume/oils you might like to wear. I use it after blow drying, air drying, before a night out, or on day 2 hair! Just lift the top layer of hair, spray lightly at the roots, and tousle it up my and it builds volume like I’ve never had.sarah.b

This gives my hair volume and that windswept, straight off the beach look, but without adding any slickness or a layer of stickiness. If anything my hair feels soft to the touch, more so than normal in fact! For reference: I have fairly long hair and I find that having that length can somewhat weigh my roots down. But with this I just use 2-3 spritzes directly onto my roots and the problem is taken care of. The effect on my hair does last a decent amount of time too, I'm often finding the waves remain for a couple of days, if not more, right until my next wash. I have fine 2B hair (high porosity, medium density, bleached). A good salt spray is KEY to my hair routine because my roots tend to be like sad limp noodles while the rest of my hair waves and curls. My favorite spray was from an indie company that no longer makes it. This is my new favorite. The bottle itself produces a nice, fine mist so it's easy to control the amount going into your hair. The product is very lightweight, so it may not be a good fit for those with thicker strands, but for my hair it's wonderful. The volume I get is subtle and looks natural. I don't notice any odd textures unless I apply it too heavily in one area (this is consistent with other salt sprays I've tried). My only complaint is the price point. This is the most expensive salt spray I've tried and I've been able to get equally good results from indie products at a much lower price. So idk if I can justify purchasing more of this even though I love it.Claire

This product was not for me, but it would be unfair to fault the product. On the plus side, if you're looking for a salt matte finish and air-dried style, with light hold for texture, you might like this spray. The product is lovely, with a great scent (I love the smell of the Surf line), and would pair nicely with the rest of the Surf line. Good for refreshing styles on second and third days. This is literally the best shampoo I have ever used! The smell is amazing, it cleans your hair really well for a fast refresh and the best part about it……no white chalky powder residue! The fact is has no white chalky residue is brilliant for dark hair, as its a huge challenge to really get that stuff out and not look dull or grey. I haven’t used this multiple times but the first go seemed to instantly hold the curl better when using my air wrap. My hair usually holds a curl quite well but I find with the air wrap they just drop out straight away unless I use this. Also smells nice. I have struggled to get curls / waves to hold in my hair since it has grown longer. I had tried texturing and other dry hair sprays but they just made my hair crisp and didn’t held the hold. This stuff actually works and because the spray is wet it doesn’t dry out your hair. Thank you chickadvisor that i had a chance to be selected to try out the got2b flex insta hold hairspray. I always love to style my hair alot of the time, i usually curl my hair and add a little bit of a touch of temporary hair color to it, the spray is fragranced which is great for me, i usually more of a person that tend to buy hairsprays that has a good smell of fragrances to it, but not to overpowering. The mist is so fine, it isnt like your squirting a whole big chunk to your hair, which i have experienced that from my other hairspray. this leaves your hair feeling soft, no stickiness and residue feeling but not just that, its also lightweight too. it holds onto my curls and my temporary hair color which stayed on for a very long time. I find it very easy to comb your hair even with the hairspray on, i fell in love immediately after using the product, i absolutely love it! I would definitely buy this again, for $8.49 at shoppers, its such a good price, i would recommend this to everyone who would love a good spray and a not overpowering fragrance! #gotitfreeXxTaeTaeXx

I recieved this product free as a member of the product review club. This is my honest review and opinions. I love the bright colors and packaging of this hairspray. That was the first thing I noticed. You get a generous amount of product and it is easy to store, unlike some hairspray cans that are really bulky. This one is slim and doesn't waste space. Most of the package is the container and the lid is just big enoughI don't use hairspray often because I have fine hair and it always seems to end up crunchy or sticky or weird looking. I have had none of those problems with this one ! It sprays in a nice fine mist so your hair doesn't get weighed down with too much product at first. This is my new fave hairspray and i am not afraid to use it almost every day. It gives you a light, flexible hold that is great for holding curls and keeping fly aways in place. You can still brush your hair and it moves naturally but your style is protected. I also love the smell of this ! It doesn't smell like alcohol and the scent is not too strong, but I really like it and so does my boyfriend lol. I have no complaints about this hairspray and I would definitely recommend it and use it again once I run out.destinyy417

Hey guys!! Quick back story. I have long 3b curly hair, and I'd say it's rather on the fine side. So usually when I do my hair I dont use hair spray at all. I mostly use a flax seed gel I make self. But since I got to try this product complimentary I had to give it a try! My first thoughts are the colors of the bottle are cute and simple. The smell is soft and floral. Once I applied the product on my hair I thought my hair would feel really stiff and gross but surprisingly it held my hair in a light weight way without over drying it or being to stiff and making my hair appear flat. So that was already an "A" in my books! The only thing I'd say I didnt like was how the product felt in my hair the next day, it felt like I had alot of build up but again I'm use to using less and home made products that dont havee much products in them so I'd say I still enjoyed this product for a back up when I run out of my flax seed gel. This thickening spray is amazing! I have not tried this as a heat protectant spray, I’ve only used this as a hairspray for my curls. I can’t attest to whether this protects as a heat protectant spray, or whether this thickens hair. I’ve worn my hair curly and I already have thick hair! I will say this clumped my curls beautifully!!! The smell is amazing, I got compliments every-time I’ve used this spray. I plan on using this as a heat protectant spray in the future. I think this would be amazing for curly girls who wear their hair in a ponytail or wants their curls to clump! It kept definition in my curls when paired with a gel and leave in. Just got this a couple days ago from #sephora couldn’t hardly wait to try it. I used a generous amount, in sections, on my damp hair (right after the shower….wash day) and let my hair air dry half way, then followed the rest by blow drying it with my on low force, but medium heat. Oh. My. Gawwwww. This stuff is amazing. My hair felt, looked, AND stayed “thick”! It wasn’t sticky or crunchy like most thickening sprays and it smells soooo good. It actually made my hair extremely soft and manageable. It looked healthier, shinier, just overall……beautiful. Now I completely understand why #oribe had products that are a bit pricy; they’re literally top of the line. If you’re a thin haired girl like me….go get this! LOVE! 10/10 recommend and am so happy I decided to give it a shot. Can’t wait to try more of their products.tess.g

I absolutely love this product! You spray it on damp hair, then blow dry to style. Spraying it on my hair did not leave my hair feeling heavy or sticky, and did not increase the drying time. I used a round blow dry brush and ended up with amazing results! I have fine, frizzy hair, so I usually have to style with a straightener or curling iron after blow drying but, honestly, I could just leave it as is. My hair has extra volume, but is also smooth and straight. I’m looking forward to using it again and adding curls to see just how much volume I can get! I will definitely be adding this to my go to products!sara.n

I really like the fragrance of this, it is also pretty good at adding texture to flat hair. I don't care for the feel of it in my hair after a few hours. It almost feels like each strand is covered in something, like just gunky. I personally prefer a different brand or dry shampoo to add texture to my hair.teascha .h

This hairspray is great for my fine hair. It holds great and smells terrific. Holds hair great. I love it. Please don't stop making it. Seems every time I find something that works it goes away.Grandma

I bought this spray with 2 other more expensive texturizing sprays, one from my favorite Alterna line, but those had over top scents that wouldn't go away. This spray is amazing for fine, straight hair. I have lots of layers and this just makes them have body and separation. I can't say enough good things about this product. Doesn't make your hair stiff and there is a very light scent that dissipates immediately. Try it, you will love it!!!Salsera
