Best Straighteners For Thick Hair (2023 Update)

I've owned my straightener for a couple years and it still works as well as when I bought it. The plates are smooth and don't break my hair off. It heats up quickly and has an automatic shut off for safety. It has several heat settings. I can work with fairly large hair sections and it comes out straight with one pass. It is skinny enough that you can get to your hairline easily. This has definitely been worth the price.amber.g

I was disappointed with this item. This brand and product was the first flat iron I owned, after the first one broke several years after, I was gifted another brand that after several years broke as well. I decided to go back to CHI, but the temperature didn’t seem very high and I had to repeat ironing the same area several times. I don’t remember this happening with the first one I owned. Granted, I have coarse, thick wavy hair, but it was taking me a long time to do my hair. I decided to purchase another brand at a mayor warehouse store at the same price point, and I am very content with this other brand. Needless to say I returned this one to the store.Patricia

I have thick, wavy coarse hair that turns into a ball of frizz at the mention of humidity. All the product in the world can’t tame this wild beast. I read tons of reviews and did my research and decided this little gem would “hopefully” give me the most bang for my buck. It didn’t disappoint. Chi’s “advanced ceramic plate technology” leaves my hair soft, shiny and straight as stick when I want and with beautiful curls when I want to look glamorous. In the past, creating curls with could be a challenge. Ergonomically it was so much easier for me to maneuver and master straight iron curls. I had been wanting to get a straighter at a good price and I found this one which was about $20. Overall I really liked this straightener. My hair is fine, type 2b so straightening my hair was very fast. The first time I tried it I didn’t have that much time so I didn’t section off my hair and straighten a section at a time. I was still able to get very good results. I would have liked the straightener to help me more with my frizzy hair, but hey, this can’t solve all my problems. The straightener heats up fast so that’s a plus. It would have been helpful for the display to light up so I could see the temperature but it’s not a huge problem for me. I was a bit skeptical purchasing this because of the price.. Most cheap flat irons don't work at all! But with the rating and positive reviews I figured why not, its not like I'm investing that much money into it.. And after using it one time I am VERY HAPPY that I purchased this flat iron!! It works great and even tho it got a bit to hot it works great for my hair! It doesn't have a light up screen so its a bit difficult to see the temperature if you have bad vision but for this price still not mad lol. Thank you for an affordable hair straightener!! Not Purple as shown, Product description (photo) is incorrect. I bought this in the past, but they must have changed the straightener but not updated the description. The straightener I received is not purple, but black with purple plates. Same goes for the purple blow dryer by Remington sold here on Walmart (shows purple but is all black with purple accents). They both work well, but clearly it's not fair to order something in one color and not get what you ordered.Melissa

A friend gave me this flat iron and I fell in love with it. It makes my hair pin straight. I dropped the old one she gave me on the floor and it broke. I loved it so much I decided to repurchase it. The new one is holding up nicely. I love how it has a range of different heat settings. I’ve tried it on high and on very low. Even on very low it still manages to straighten my hair. I will keep buying this straightener when I need a new one until I can’t find it anymore.tammy.c

I had this flat irons for 3 years now. I set it to 450. After clarifying my hair 3 times or 2 times I follow up with a moisturizing shampoo which I use only one time. Then the conditioner lastly the deep conditioner which I set under the dryer for about 20 minutes. I rinse my hair with lukewarm water then a quick 10 sec shot of ice cold water. I t shirt dry my hair let it set to absorb the water, put some leave in conditioner on my hair then some hair heat protector serum. I section my hair blow dry it on low heat. After I flat iron my hair on 450 using the chase method. It takes me 2 hours to flat iron my hair. My hair is 4c, naturally blonde (do not ask me my race or where I am from because I don't know.), my hair is so thick that sometimes I actually lost my comb in my hair plenty of times. And my hair is to my waist If it straighten. But If it is in an afroc state, it's 2 inches pass my shoulders. I will forever keep this flat iron.carolyn.r

I bought this less then a year ago. At first it was amazing! Heated fast glided smoothly through my hair. Made my hair pin straight. And does beautiful curls. But now the coating is chipping off on the edges pretty badly. It isn't gliding as nicely leaving creases. Also it doesn't seem to be getting as hot. I need it hot because my hair is super thick and my daughters hair is even thicker so low heat does nothing. So now im back to looking AGAIN. But I must also add it was being used by myself and my 3 girls… 2 with thick hair 1 average and other is super thin. So basically it was getting daily use.MommaOfFour

I used to own a Hot Tools flat iron, but once I received this flat iron for Christmas a few years ago, the Hot Tools one was promptly donated. The best part of this flat iron is how securely it clamps onto my hair. I don't need an iron grip in order to get good tension; the flat iron does it on its own. It also heats up extremely quickly – if I spray heat protectant on my hair and then immediately turn on the flat iron, the heat protectant will not be dry before the flat iron comes to temp. I also love the multiple temperature settings. I have loosely wavy hair that holds heat styling well, and I always have the temperature set to 365° F. My sister has curly hair, so when I'm doing her hair, we either keep the temperature at 365° or increase it one setting (to around 400°) depending on the day. I also love the aesthetics of this flat iron and of Kristin Ess' entire line of tools. The soft touch is nice and grippy, and it's never slipped out of my hand. I've owned this flat iron for years, and even though I don't straighten my hair every day, I've never had an issue with anything rubbing off. This is the first, and probably only, flat iron I would recommend to anyone asking for it.Katie

I have the nanoblack 3-in-one flat iron (couldn’t find it in Influenster) the full size, not the mini. It has a 9ft cord that moves with the iron (like if you’re doing curls) it’s not fixed to it, this is helpful if you’re like me have hair past your butt + it helps keep your cord from getting twisted. This iron is beautiful, it has a very soft silky feel to it is super sleek looking. It’s fairly light weight comfortable to hold. My hand wrist don’t get tired half way through doing my hair. It doesn’t have a lock on it to keep it closed but it does come with a cap you can slide over the end which keeps it closed, the instructions sheet says the cap is heat proof but I don’t quite trust that it is so I leave the iron in my sink until it cools down before putting the cap on (which fits quite snugly) hanging it up. As far as heat up time WOW this thing heats up FAST! It took less than 30 seconds for it to get up to temp! The sides are rounded so you can easily do curls without getting crease lines in them, although I haven’t quite mastered the technique of curling with a flat iron yet. One thing I was worried about was that hair would snag but after using it a few times that’s no longer a concern. My hair slides through it like silk. It has ceramic plates which are great for those of us who tend to get static hair after using hot tools (ugh the worst) It has a few different heat settings. I did have to look up how to do that since there’s no dial or specific button for that but it was easy to do. Just keep clicking the power button quickly until it’s the temp you want. When you plug it in you have to hit the power button, it doesn’t just start heating up on its own like other irons I’ve owned in the past. With all that being said I definitely do recommend this iron if you’re in the market for a new one. It came in a really nice heavyweight cardboard box with a magnetic flap, I’m sure most will throw it away but if you’re like me keep the boxes to repurpose or so your tools are more protected during travel this is a good box that won’t be crushed or damaged easily.krystal .d

This is a great flat iron, easy to use and made my daughter’s hair silky smooth. It’s also reasonably priced and well made. I just got it so I’ll write back regarding its durability but for now, I Would definitely recommend!Stacie R.

I was originally sent a used straightener and when I called customer service, they immediately sent me a return label and sent me a brand new one. I was surprised when I got my package that they also sent me a free mini hair dryer. I wasn’t expecting anything feee I just wanted a new product but I was so stoked when I saw the mini hair dryer. My flat irons cut off while I’m doin hair, since the first try. Randomly power off, and I don’t think I’m getting g even heat distribution from the plates.when I curl the hair , some pieces are straight and sleek, but some pieces look untouched. Don’t waste your time and money on this product. I bought it because it was on sale for Black Friday and I was due for a new straightener. However, this straightener struggled to heat up. I tried to restart my outlet and everything then it worked ONLY ONCE. It never heated up after and started showing “Error” on the small screen. I have been using this flat iron consistently over the last couple of weeks, and here are my thoughts and views on the product, itself, and how it performs. My hair is rather thick and naturally wavy and it rarely ever just does what I want it to do. It requires high heat and styling tools and products if I am trying to achieve a sleek and straight look. With this flat iron alone, I have not been able to achieve that look. I feel that 410 degrees is just not a heat may possibly not be high enough heat for the texture of my hair. I also had a hard time reading the digital temperature setting. I think it would help to have a backlight with this setting. Upon receiving this product, I noticed it had a very new smell… that of a product which was brand new and had never been used. The flat iron smells somewhat like burnt plastic when it is first turned on and I did smell it several times after the first use. I don't smell it anymore though and it wasn't that bothersome to me. I just associated that smell with it being brand new and recently manufactured. In all fairness, I think that this is a pretty good product when compared to others in the same pricing bracket. It's a good value for the price. I have been a long time user of Remington styling tools and have had favorable experiences with all of those which I have ever owned and used. This particular model may have not been my favorite, but it was not at all a bad product. I would recommend it to others… It just wasn't the best model for my particular hair type.Ashley83

This little wonder does everything that I need it to for my short hair. And best of all, I have never gotten burned while using it. I have a couple more expensive flat irons, but this is my got too. I can curl the top or leave it flat without frying my hair. I am very pleased with it.nana1233

This was the first flat iron I ever got. Thank God I have upgraded to a better one. I couldn't stand dealing with this one. Then again my hair is super curly. I am mixed (black and white) so I have very thick long curly hair. I'm not sure how this straightener would've worked on a different hair type, but I know that I eventually resorted to just using it to straighten my bangs. Effectiveness It worked OKAY. I usually had to straighten the smallest sections of hair in order to get it straightened properly. I also had to straighten over the same small pieces of hair a few times to get it straight. There are different heat settings. I usually set mine to the highest because that's what my hair needed. Make sure you do clean it from time to time because that will effect the iron's ability to straighten the way it should. Durability This flat iron is cheaply made. SO BE CAREFUL WITH IT. It's cheap plastic outside and easily susceptible to cracking. I'm pretty sure one of the ceramic pieces even started to come off the flat iron. You get what you pay for.yalaska

I have always used a curling iron even when the flat iron become the new thing. I already have straight hair but it lacks body and volume. The Conair Ultra Slim looked like a experimental flat iron since it's very affordable. I like the curve to the handle, this feature makes it easy to use and feels comfortable the whole time. I figure a slim flat iron would be a better fit for my hair, it's not thick, but it's not thin either. It took me so long to section off each part if my hair and go over it with this Ultra Slim Flat Iron! I used a flat iron spray to help with the hold, and after it was all said and done my hair looked straight but laid flat on my head. I've learned new techniques since purchasing this flat iron and see where this one can help with getting close enough to the roots to add volume. The settings go up to 25, so there's a range of heat to use, it also heats up fast in under a minute. Since it took me so long to go over my entire head of hair I will now use this one as a touch up flat iron or a back up while I travel. The size is perfect for carrying it out with me and it does the job as long as I don't have to go over my entire head of hair.AprilTolley

Beeping and defaulting to a cooler setting, on first use. Retuned within a week explaining this, as my previous Cloud Nine irons never did this in 3 years of using them! Customer services advised me: “I would advise you to apply a little less pressure when using the product and you will no longer hear the intermittent warning beep” After straightening my hair for 20 years, this has never been an issue previously. Disappointed that my complaint was brushed off as me not being able to use the product correctly. The irons were retuned to me, and despite ‘multiple tests being carried out by engineers’, hey presto! The beeping and defaulting to a lower heat setting happened again on first use. I was really looking forward to these hair straighteners, having read lots of reviews, I chose these over another well known brand. To be honest I dont really rate them, I mean they're OK but don't see why everyone raves about them. I have to have them on the highest temperature for them to do anything. I have shoulder length hair. My daughter who has long hair also feels the same. They don't live up to my expectations. I am absolutely blown away by my purchase of Cloud 9 straighteners. I was a GHD girl, through and through, having had my last pair for over 10 years. However, I noticed that they started to pull my hair and snap it slightly so thought it may be time for an upgrade. I instinctively looked at the new GHDs but then I asked a few friends and they ALL said I should buy Cloud 9s instead. So I trusted their advice and bought some. Wow. I am blown away. I have very thick long hair and these Cloud 9s glide down it without a single tug, infact I can't feel them at all. But the BEST bit about these straighteners is that they keep my hair poker straight for days!!! With my previous straighteners, I would have to straighten my hair almost daily and sometimes even going out in the wind would affect how straight it stayed but with the Cloud 9s I am actually only having to straighten after washing and it stays poker straight for days (upto 4!) And because I'm straightening it less, I am benefitting from not having to wash it as much too as it doesn't go greasy as quickly. All in all, I am so pleased I switched brands! My is my absolute favorite straightener. And I have quite a few (don't judge me 😫 ) and 3 of them have been a chi. I actually got my first one when I was in hair school and it was a pretty basic iron (back then they didnt have the same technology as they have today) and from there I upgraded. They have lasted me FOREVER! This new one came with a warantee and everything which when something is guarenteed I appreciate that as a customer. I'm much more likely to spend a good amount of money if it's a product that the company is so confident in that they can back it up. Anyway it has all the features you would look for in a styling tool. Safety, temp control, shut off feature, you can put it on a stand so it's safe to set down, it came with a cute little case for either travel or as a dust protector. I'm not sure if they all did, but this one that I purchased off the website did. And there are different discounts for people in school or sale or coupons for new or returning customers. The length of time they have ALL lasted is deff worth paying the extra money to have the quality and guarentee that you're getting a great tool that you will use on a daily basis.jollean.s

The most id ever spent on a straightener before this was $20, and you could tell. I'd go over and over my hair with my revlon trying to get it flat and not to mention the plastic catching on my hair and ripping it But this has changed my life in just the 24 hours I've had it!! Smoothest, silky straight hair ever! Doesn't pull or break my hair strands either. I'd give it 6 stars if I could!Madisun

I am totally impressed by this flat iron. I have always loved CHI straighteners but this is a whole new level of amazing. I have long thick wavy hair and I set the heat to 360 degrees since I read 400 or above can really damage your hair. It heated up to 360 in about 30 sec and was ready to use. The plates are smoother than my other CHI and just glide through my hair. I was done in about 2-3 minutes and my hair has never looked so shiny!! I've always used heat protection spray but the shine was all from this straightener. My hair feels so soft and healthy. I also love the auto shut off feature and it's the main reason I bought this one in the first place because I forget if I unplugged my straightener or not. Only downside to this is the plug doesn't have surge protection on it, so don't straighten your hair while barefoot on a wet floor or around water. Thankfully my husband installed outlets in our bathroom that have the surge protection buttons on them. Just something to be aware of. Otherwise, this hair tool is a no brainer. I have stayed away from mini flat irons because they did not get hot enough to straighten my curly hair. I have not used this yet but did test it upon receipt. There is no heat control which I wish there were. It did get hot enough for my hair so I am very excited to take it on my next vacation so I can leave my regular, expensive flat iron at home. My daughter & I use several size/width BaByliss flatirons. We are African American with curlier textured hair. We nicknamed the Mini "Baby Bop". My daughter uses it almost everyday because she likes her edges straight! This little flat iron is awesome because it gets HOT almost as soon as you turn it on. The plates leave your hair silky and because of it's evenly distributed heat, you can straighten your hair in no time flat!. You have more control flat ironing those hard to reach places (around the ears, the nape of the neck, edges etc.) without getting burned. I had purchased our first Mini quite some time ago. That one finally started acting up, (the cord) and I couldn't find them in any local stores. I purchased this to iron my bangs when I'm traveling for work. You have to section your hair into small portions and it's very difficult to finish with a slight curl at the end. My bangs end up looking straight and almost comical anytime I use this. It's not even that good at small touchups around the face etc. I've given it a few tries, and no luck. This is the ultimate in hair tools that I’ve ever used on my hair. L’Oréal’s Steampod is an incredibly innovative hair tool. The built in water tank is genius! The 360 degree rotating cord is perfection. I found it very easy to use and comfortable to maneuver. The three heat settings makes controlling the heat temperature a breeze. I loving being able to use this Steampod to flat iron and also curl my hair as well. I’ve tried to stay away from heating tools for quite sometime because they have a habit of damaging and drying out my hair. I have found that L’Oréal’s Steampod is the complete opposite of every heating hair tool I’ve ever used in the past. L’Oréal’s Steampod leaves my hair looking silky and smooth without it ever looking dry, crunchy or damaged. It’s incredible! I haven’t even experienced any breakage since using this hair tool. The Steampod easily glides through my thin curly hair easily without pulling or tugging on my delicate hair strands. The Steampod has a built in comb within the plates that helps to untangle and comb through the hair for a flawless finish. My hair lasts up to a week in a straight flat iron style. I also found myself using half the time to flat iron my long locks using the Steampod when compared to other flat irons that I’ve used in the past. I found it very easy to remove the water tank to fill with water. Choosing the right temperature for my hair was very simple. The Steampod allowed me to achieved beautiful wavy hairstyles in a breeze. I found it very easy to wrap my hair around the Steampod while I rotated it as it glided through my hair giving me the perfect waves to my hair. I was so excited to try the L’Oreal Professional Streampod Flat Iron and Curling Iron and love the amazing my hair looks and feels after using it! It’s not a traditional straightener or curling iron so there are additional steps. First you need to fill in built in water tank with filtered water, once that has been done you turn it on and adjust the heat settings. When using this iron you need to follow the arrows on the iron in that given direction because there is a built in comb. You need to be sure to have brushed very well as the built in comb will not run through your hair properly and when I’ve had knots it’s actually pulled out my hair. When I use this as a straighter I section off small sections of hair because I’ve found it gives the best results and easier to do given the comb can get snagged and tear out hair. I pass the iron slowly down my hair and the comb goes through my hair brushing it through leaving it silky smooth and shiny and oh so straight! For curling my hair I start the same way but then place a small section into the iron in the middle of the plates and wrap my hair around the iron, rotate the iron and glide it down creating the perfect smooth, shiny waves in my hair. I like to wait a few minutes as it’s recommended to shake out my hair for beachy waves or more natural finish. Overall I love this iron and the steam feature that never actually gets your hair wet sure makes it worthwhile helping make your hair so smooth and shiny. It has three heat settings as well 350 degrees, 390 degrees and 410 degrees that really does a great job on the iron for maintaining the right temperature and for my fine hair I use the 350 degrees of ironing and sometimes the 350 degrees or 390 degrees for creating waves. It definitely also styles your hair in less time and effort compared to other irons for the same results. Overall highly recommend it!Vmuller2

So I am going to be bluntly honest about this straightener. It is quite heavy and almost 4 fingers wide. Steam (as most women of color know) curls hair and roots. It is near impossible to get close enough to the root with this straightener. I tried it with the comb attachment at first and it was ripping my hair out and I had just freshly brushed. Took the comb attachment off and that really made no difference because there are 3 sections of the straightener that literally grab hair and rip it. Hurt so bad. What usually takes me 30 minutes took almost 2 full hours which made no sense because this straightener is about 2x larger than my other straighteners! Passed over one piece 10 times and it would not go straight. It has a really sleek look but that's about it. One thing I can say about it that I love is that the on/off button is inside the straightener along with temperature gage! This feature is wonderful. I know a lot of women are receiving this product for free to test just like me but it is important to be honest always ladies! I am a woman of color with curly/wavy hair and I would never recommend this to other women of color. My hair smells burnt and I had to fill the water reservoir twice. The fastest heat-up time I have ever seen on a flat iron!! If you're new to a flat iron I suggest you definitely begin with a lower heat setting, then once youve mastered the learning curve gradually increase the heat. This is why the wide range of heat settings on this iron is sooo good!! This irons large surface plates makes it easier to do wider sections of your hair at a time which speeds up the styling time too. I have very coarse, thick, wavy hair. I have only ever used a flat iron before. When I bought this I was actually shopping for a replacement for my awesome, but 16+ year old flat iron. I bought this on whim, because honestly, the price. I even asked the Ulta associate about their return policy because I was sure this tiny thing wouldn't work in my giant, poofy, frizzy hair. I was 98% sure I was returning it. Now, as another reviewer said this will not really straighten you hair if you have A LOT of hair, although it did better than expected, but it would make wavy hair pretty smooth. It's not going to give you flat iron results. It also didn't really turn my ends under the way I like. What it did do, and what I actually bought it for was to straighten a terrible cowlick that I have on one side of my head that kinks up over night no matter how satiny or silky my pillowcase is or how careful I am to not sleep on that side of my head. The first morning that used this I had a particularly tossy-turny night of sleep and my hair was a complete mess. I thought it was going to be a ponytail day. But this little thing straightened out all the kinks and left my hair looking like the day before when it was freshly ironed. I'm actually really glad I purchased this and I almost wish I'd purchased the full size unit, but this works just fine. Especially for the price point. At the same time that I bought this I bought a pretty pricey flat iron that was a huge disappointment and will be getting returned. I have thick wavy hair and I like to straighten and smooth my hair every day so I usually use a hair straightener every day. I have never had a brush that straightens my hair so this product was something I was very intrigued by and excited to use. The brush is compact which I absolutely love! I love small appliances that don't take up a lot of space, it would be great for people who travel since it's so compact. It's simple to use, you push a button and it heats up quick. It does a good job at making my hair frizz free and smooth which I really like. I did have to use it a couple of times on the same strands of hair to get stick straight hair. I have a lot of hair so if I am in a rush I will just use the mini brush to smooth out the top layers of my hair. The Instyler Mini brush is a versatile product for sure. I had never used a ceramic straightening brush before but this product made me fall in love with it! I also did not know Instyler had ceramic brushes but glad I now have one since I really enjoy Instyler products. I feel like it makes my hair look great no matter what look I am aiming for. I am actually planning on buying the brush for my mom as a gift since she has really frizzy hair and she is looking for something to help tame away the frizz. I know she will like it since we have similar hair. My hair is fine and this straightening brush from Remington worked so much better than others I have tried because of the brush design. The brush is deeper and laid out so the heat is on the base and it straightened all my hair, it held my fine hair in the brush well enough to be effective! It's a great design and shape! The straightener was easy to use and comfortable to hold. I love the features as well, it has three heat settings depending on your need, the light indicates the heat selection you are using. It has an auto shut off after 60 minutes, which is a great safety feature. I'm also impressed with the way my hair glides through the brush and the bristles do not snag or tangle my hair. Even more than other heated hair styling tools, your success with this one will depend on what type of hair you have and what your expectations are when styling your hair. My hair is neither curly nor straight, just mildly poofy and a bit frizzy – without heat, it falls into a weird unattractive pageboy type style so on days I don't style my hair with a heated tool, I pull it into a ponytail. Using the heated straightening brush styles my hair just barely enough that I can avoid a ponytail and wear my shoulder length hair down without being annoyed by it every time I pass a mirror. And that is enough for me to be happy with the brush and continue using it; it definitely fills a previously empty spot in my arsenal of heating styling tools as most days I'm not going to bother with a flat iron or heated rollers. I took off one star because the brush handle is awkward and my fingers land on the buttons too often; also it is a bit too heavy. Another negative – it drags though my hair less than smoothly. And it works best with slow passes through the hair which is fine until you get to the ends; it's hard to hold the ends of your hair in the brush. I am really impressed with this straightening comb. The design allows you to get pretty close to the root while keeping the heat away from your skin. The hair guides glide smoothly through the hair. I found this much easier to use than a flat iron and more effective than the heated brush. Like every straightener I've ever used, the results don't las as long as you might want, but they did last overnight.rhane01

I love it! I have very thick curly hair. It usually takes me 1 1/2 hours to straighten it with a standard straight iron and this tool cut the time in half. Im usually fighting with a comb and having to lay the straightener down while I pick up the comb to comb it. Its a battle. This product solved my problem. The only drawback is my bangs are very short and it doesnt work with short hair. Will have to use old straightener till they grow out then into the recycling bin with the old. Will be purchasing another for backup just in case. I cant picture life without now.millibyer-0
