I went through two sets of these after my friend recommended them to me and boasted about how amazing they were. I had been using Ernie Ball Slinky sets and was still a fairly new player at the time, so I was trying to discover my sound. I put these strings on my Epiphone G-400. Tonally, the strings were pretty responsive and could really sing. However, I didn't like the fact that I had to crimp the wound strings due to the round core wire. It's just extra work, and I hate restringing as it is. Another problem: String breakage. Out of all the string brands I've tried, none of them have been as prone to breaking as DRs. Good tone shouldn't come at the cost of weak strings. Ernie Balls not only cost less, but their overall quality has been superior so far. Sorry, DR.
Bought these on a recommendation from a guy on YouTube and have not had any issues at all. I put them on an old Jazz Bass and I'll be darned, now it sounds more like a P Bass lol. Feel amazing on the fingertips. Nice smooth sound. Takes away that plucky, string-noise thing from a Jazz Bass (unless you want that sort of thing, of course). I have been using them for many years, I previously used D'Addario which are also great, but for me the Fenders are the best flatwound string available. I like ML, 50-100. I don't like thin trebly G strings or thick flubby Es so the closer gauges suit me. I use them on a Maton JB4 1980 fretless and a Maton JB4 2013 fretted reissue and they suit both. Ta lots for being the only place in Oz to have a set. The attached photo shows my JB4 with a well-worn set of 9050MLs at work in the Adelaide Fringe in 2017.Dave T

Great strings! I only play pure nickel. On my hard-tail and/or blocked guitars, I use Fender Pure Nickel 150R or 150M strings (simply because bullets are a little more expensive and not necessary on those)…..and on my floating Tremolo/Trem Block guitars I use these. The bullet ends float (or slide) up and down in the trem block when using the "whammy bar", and stays in tune much better than the ball (or eye) end strings that have flat edges that may get hung up in the cavity of the trem block. No; I'm not brain-washed. I've been playing for over 35 years, and this has been tested—tried and true. If you use your whammy on a Stratocaster or Telecaster, you're gonna want these strings. The Bullets have it if great string resonance with your Strat ™ is important. Gauges have changed to be more competitive in today's string market; and, that does provide a tonal asset. Might be nice to have each string wrapped in its own paper sleeve. Much easier that can be for the restringing process. I'm a lowly bass player so go easy. While I own more basses than I deserve, I like playing guitar especially into a looper with a drum machine (Korg Pandora) to help with writing bass lines or just having fun. I have 3 guitars. 2 have fixed bridges with a Les Paul scale length. For those, I bounce between Fender 150s & 250s, DR Blues and Ernie Balls. For my Fender Stratocaster (50's FSR Classic Player), I prefer these. While some may claim limited sonic benefit from bullets over balls, I've definitely had balls get stuck in my tremolo block (behave!). These work better for me. I have yet to break one of these though I don't do super-heavy dive-bombs. They sound nice and seem to hold their sound for a long time. I switch between these and the 3250s when I want a little more bite. I have noticed a difference between the current strings from Fender, which are now made by D'Addario, and the original ones that Fender made themselves in Mexico. These strings are okay for the price, but I've had several problems with them. 1) This is not a sealed pack, so when I bought it the .010 had rusty patches right out of the pack and maybe the .013 too. They're in individual folded paper sleeves all together in an open-air fold-over plastic sheath. 2) They're NOT for your standard extended-range/long scale 8-string. Short scale guitars only. These fit my 25.5" guitar nicely, but when I tried putting these on my Agile Interceptor 30" scale guitar, they were probably 5"+ too short. Didn't even reach the nut, much less the peg (partly because it's a string-through, tune-o-matic, long scale, and reverse-inline, so lots of extra string is needed. Also, on the paper sleeve, it tells you that it's a 30" taper, which means that the string gets narrow after 30" to fit through the tuning peg. On many extended-rang/long scale guitars, the taper will begin before the nut, which you do NOT want. You want the string to be the same diameter along the entire vibrating length. 3) The tension balance is all out of whack. The gauges are okay on the last 6 strings for 25.5" scale. A little too tight from the .054 down (I can imagine on your typical long-scale 8-string they'd be way too tight), but I drop-tune the low strings to E and A, and the .074 is totally floppy and smacking the frets and the 0.64 could definitely be thicker.The Kev
I wrote a review earlier about these strings, but I have definitely changed my mind. I do have an eight string, and I used these for it and wow…they were not very good. The most obvious thing was the .74 string gets smaller WAY before the tuners, even for my seven string. So playing the first fret feels extremely awkward. Second, palm muting on these things sounds hideously dirty compared my old strings or even the stock strings. I also have to agree that a .54 for the E string is very ridiculous. The only thing I'd recommend these for is softer playing or if you never play chords. Otherwise, get the D'Addario or any other 8-string set.Brian Dice
Ernie Ball completely failed on this one! Ernie Ball is my usual brand of string, but whoever put this set together knows absoultely nothing about string tension or 8 string guitars. 8 string guitars are extended scale instruments from 27-30", so why are they putting a .054 for the E and a .064 on the B? In their 7 string sets they put a .052 or .056 on their low B, and that's for a normal 25.5" scale. Do you see any logic in this? Then they put a .074 on the 8th string. It's actually a good choice for the 8th string tension-wise (if the rest of the strings were balanced), but it has WAY too little tension compared to the low E and B. Compared to the other incredibly heavy strings in the pack it makes no sense. If you want a nice, balanced set look into LaBella Crazy 8's, or just buy a 7 string set and add on the appropriate 8th string.

I've been playing/collecting new and vintage guitars for 26 years, and regularly try new strings. I noticed that if these strings contact the bridge when re-stringing, the color will chip off immediately. Secondly, they feel like dull plastic. This feels like your fingers are dragging, and seems "cheap". Thirdly, I had to adjust all the pickup heights on the low-E, as the heavier strings sound completely dull and lifeless. I also received a damaged string, and contacted DR customer service. I haven't even received a response in two weeks, which demonstrates how unimportant we are. In this day and age, where online retail is more important then ever, this is unacceptable. This is NOT a reflection on Guitar Center, which always takes good care of me. I decided to pick up guitar after a 15 year break and found Rocksmith to be a pretty useful tool. I put these on my guitar to help with getting familiar with the fretboard and neck. Because it's been awhile. The first couple of days, the strings sounded great with no issues, but a couple of weeks in, some of the strings sound muted a little bit and are just not as crisp as non-coated strings. i'll probably take these off sooner than later. Prior to playing Cleartones, I played GHS and Ernie Ball. Not a thing wrong with the strings, aside from the fact that they wore out incredibly quickly. I used to work as a salesperson at Guitar Center and I've played on almost every string sold at GC. I will only play Cleartones on all of my guitars now. They don't go dead as quickly as your standard DR's or Ernie's, etc. They hold their sound throughout the duration of their life, and you'll notice a drastic change in the tone when they wear out, unlike other strings that lose their tone consistently every time you play. I've had a set of cleartones on since June 13th (today is 7/5) and I've played six shows and had 8 or 9 practices in that time span. The strings still have the same tone as they had the day I put them on. I am also a stickler for maintaining my guitar, and I try to wipe the strings off as much as possible after I play. If you play consistently on stage and find yourself replacing low-end strings every couple weeks, make the investment and purchase the Cleartones. Just as a comparison, three packs of Ernie Ball's last three months if you play for two hours a day. One pack of Cleartones will last that three months and will cost less in the long run than buying three packs of Ball's.
My personal favorite coated strings, they have a great balanced tone perfect for rock and roll. They last forever, and keep their tone for months even with heavy playing. They have a warm low end and snappy responsive highs. I typically don't like coated strings as I find they impede my playing, however these strings feel like there's nothing there! I really like the tone and flexable feel of these strings. They have a good sound that does sound to bright or feel to slick, unlike elixers. I will probably purchase again if i find a great deal on them but unfortanatly i didnt get my moneys worth because the g string broke in two weeks. The only other thing i didnt love is that the big e string has so much wrapping at the ball that i had to jam my pin in a little more than was comfortable to hold it in. All in all the positives outway the negatives, the biggest thing to improve on would be durability.tyrw21

great strings at a good price…i put them on my dean ml 79 reissue with a dimebucker at the bridge and a SD 59' at the neck. since i have hot pickups ive had some trouble getting the kind of tone i want out of the clean channel on my all tube carvin v3 stack. dont get me wrong the sound was good before, but after i put these things on, it was a night and day difference. it gave my tone a much warmer, darker more responsive sound, while still allowing the perfect amount of brightness to ring through. i tune to e standard, or a half step down from there, and sometimes tune everything down to d. even in standard tuning i dont have a problem with the strings being to stiff. all in all they sound good, and dont feel too bad to play at any tuning, and i put them on about three weeks ago and they aree still in tune, and have all there tone.
I play a lot of open d tuning and put these on a hollow body archtop to experiment with what kind of sound I could get. Putting these on gave it a bit more of a rock sound and I still wanted to be able to capture the acousticness of the guitar even when plugged in. These obviously aren't the strings for me, but they may be for you. As a pure electric guitar solid body string I think these will work well, they just didn't project the type of sound I was hoping for with the type of guitar I put them on. I'll be putting on some Zebra hybrids to see if that'll give me the sound I want.Jesse

Overall: Got a couple sets of the extra light (D930) strings put one of the sets on my Gretsch G5425. Easy on, tunes well and after stretching the strings it holds tune very well. The bass is strong and no too overpowering and the treble was bright without being tinny. The middle was a little underwhelming at times, but I'm not sure if it was the strings or the amp I was using. When I changed amps there were no issues. I would definitely use these again. Next up will be trying a set out on my Les Paul, after I burn up the strings on it.Steve

So far, I am happy. They are definitely day glow orange & glow under black light. I got a good deal during a sale. I will say that I knew going in they are coated strings. After lots of heavy play, the coating will eventually wear off, as with just about any coated string. To me, there is no noticeable difference between these and a regular set of strings, maybe these are a little bit smoother due to coating. I wanted an orange & black SG, and this was the topper. If you are expecting super strings that stay orange and last forever & ever, you'll probably be disappointed. I would think it obvious that if you play hard, sweat a lot, play many hours every day, etc., these strings will wear out, as would ANY. For me, I am seeing a tiny bit of flaking off the light strings, right where my pick hits, on the high E & B after about 3 weeks of playing. I am not complaining, this is about what I expected & this is my workhorse guitar. They still sound good & are still orange.
The strings I purchased lasted about as long as a normal set of strings, but were so much louder than normal strings. Thank you for selling these strings to me and for selling these works of art! I got these strings hoping to tune to Dropped-C or Dropped-C#. They get tight at Dropped-B. If you plan on using them for Dropped-A (anything lower than that is just ridiculous), Dropped-Ab, or Dropped-B, these are good for that. The lowest string tends to sharpen when played on the frets higher than the 7th though. Otherwise they're fine, and it takes FOREVER for any of the strings to die. I've had them for 4 months and they still play just as well as they did when I got them. The sound is great… just get them if you plan to tune really REALLY low.
these sound incredible at the B and A range. Particularly A because they are so thick. I dont play in F but they still hold tune and tension amazingly. They sound sharp and are very lively strings. Im going to try the 10-60 next week. the 65 gauge is a little to big for versatility. I plan on buying a third guitar and that will have these strings designated to it.Reza

If and when you find these for a reasonable price BUY THEM!! Since Eddy died anything with his name on it skyrockets in price. I don't play as often as I'd like, but when I do I play hard. These strings are some of very few that stay in tune, don't corrode or flatten out on the fret side. ALL strings should be thoroughly wiped down after use. GHS Fast fret is a great choice, rubbing alcohol followed by mineral oil is another.blue-mike
I haven't played or had these long enough to comment on the longevity of the strings. They have a very good tone when played heavy or with high gain, great harmonics from the strings. I am not however totally pleased with them when playing clean. I am not exactly sure what I am hearing, but something just doesn't jive when playing totally clean. Not a horrible sound, but in my opinion, an unwanted sound. If you always play heavy, and love harmonics, these are the strings for you.skarski
I'm a big fan of I'm a big fan of Van Halen. When I finally bought a guitar with a locking bridge I wanted to try different strings to see what works and what doesn't. I've tried a number of brands and so far these strings can withstand the most heavy of whammy bar usage. I can perpetually dump the bar and they always stay in tune. I really haven't had the same experience with any other string company yet. I played the .9-.42 set. I recommend these strings if you like doing a lot of squealing dive bomb harmonics or rather just any kind of crazy dive bombing that you'll hear Eddie doing on every record. Buy n' try.

what can i say, i have been using Ernie Ball Slinky's for almost twenty years.and would not think of any other string. they are so flexible, i think i am using regular guitar strings. it doesn't take a Hercules to pull the strings down to the frets. and they always have the sound i am looking for. look, i am going to shoot straight. most musicians are not rich.and struggle until that day(if it ever comes) we get discovered or finally break through. most of us don't. so, if i can get a string that allows me to do what i can with a bass, and sound like the most expensive bass ever made, at a price where i can eat dinner that night,that's a win-win. so whether i am playing for a bunch of my friends, or playing in some major concert venue.i will continue to use Ernie Ball products.david

Nice, lightweight strings with a good feel and excellent durability. The Slinky series give a great bright sound to the player, which is great for overall sound of the instrument. This lighter gauge I recommend for some of my beginner and/or younger students, especially while developing grip and finger strength. Postage from Artist was of course, super fast. Service is generally excellent, and while I have had some issues with their own brand products in the past, they've always played straight and fairly.

I have tried a multitude of various strings. These DR strings are great. I have the Multi color; Yellow; Orange; Green and the Black Beauty ones. Not only does this look bad but, more importantly, seriously diminishes playability. My fingers then slide over rough, flaking strings. Ouch! Cute idea…terrible execution! Cute idea. These are excellent strings. I bought them for my son, who loves them. They stay in tune well. He likes their feel, they feel like the Elixir strings he used before. They seem to last well, he's had then on his Schecter about 3 weeks and they feel and look good and hold their tuning well. And did I mention they look really good under black light?Richard

great strings. they really last close to forever without getting that "rubbery" feel or sound with age. having used both pick techniques and finger plucking, these strings stand the test of time and durability. my first set i bought in november and lasted until june. im on my second set right now and they are still going strong. i know it seems unnatural to last this long but they do without any sound or feel difference over time. when i put on my second set of these my bass sounded exactly the same as the first. whether you use a pick or pluck, the paint still comes off where you pluck but its not noticeable unless you're up close. and these sound great from drop D to drop B tuning (since my band switched tuning). very very good buy!JohnTFF
The coating is very poor on the string that I received. I don't care for them and I didn't get what I thought I was ordering. I thought that I was getting coated strings that is easy on your fingers and don't make the sliding sound when moving up and down the strings. These strings are very poor quality.
I haven't used these yet, but with 6 basses, it's coming. I Have used DR Black strings, and like them. Your heart can feel the bass, but clear enough to cut through. I wipe with alcohol, and they keep it awhile. Using a set now, over a year, still good. Use DR, feel the sound. BennyBbenny501

The biggest selling point for Super Slinky strings is their magnificent tone. There really aren't any strings that sound better than these for hard rock. But as others have noted, they are sometimes prone to premature breakage of the unwound strings at the ball end. It you use a locking tremolo like a Floyd Rose, then this isn't an issue, as you'll be cutting off the ball ends anyway. But for everyone else, he's a trick that I (and many other players) have been using for Super Slinky's ever since the 80's. Just grab your soldering iron and solder the string down where it's twisted around the ball. Just be sure that the twisted part is nicely coated with solder and you shouldn't have any more problems with early breakage. Don't worry, it won't mess up their tone of anything like that… not if you do it right. Try it and see!Rasterburn
I've used a lot of different strings over the years (d'addario, DR, ghs, elixer…etc.) I like ernie balls cause i cant remember breaking one(while they still had life)…like ever! Can't say that about the other guys. They have good tone, but i've always been more concerned with durability. And lastly they are cheap!!! Super easy to stock up on a budget. I use the 56-10 and play in drop A just fine with a 27" scale. On a 27"-25.5" fanned fret they are perfect when soloing. Only issue i have is that the .56g is just long enough to leave a couple winds around the tuner with a reverse headstock. I use a string mute so no worries, but i just wish they made it a 1/2 inch longer. I can see where people playing nothing but single note breakdowns would need a .62g+ guage set, but thats not me.Justkyle86
In short I'm all done with Ernie's strings. Ernie Ball strings are corroded. They must have had water damage to there warehouse or something.. Now they claim on there Package mind you" that their strings have a coating to protect against corrosion. Here's the clincher" They tell you, they now include strings that have corrosion in the set! In other words, very damaged strings that will break on you immediately after you get them on your guitar. I had to fish around for an old D string that popped right out of the box. Soon as I put It on. I could tell right away It looked like a very used. Then I tightened it up and it broke right away. Shocked" dose not say it all. I have never had problems w/Ernie Ball strings for 20 years. But now there Including corroded water Damaged strings In the set of new strings. Ba-By is the word.BY BY Ernie" By By. I've used many strings over the yrs as most guitarists do. But I always go back to Ernie Ball. They are just simply the best quality and tone wise. I'm mad it took me so long to try these though. I love the slightly heavier bottom while still having the mid gauge on the highs that you normally get from the regular slinky set. They work great for standard tuning but work even better if you tune a half step down (my main tuning). Don't hesitate and get your pack or packs today. You won't be disappointed.Vince, T
Tried this string more for helping out with a slight string buzz on the low E. Thought a heavier low E would help out, which it did. That said, awesome sounds for thumping rhythm playing while leaving a standard 10s on the high end for note bending. Great balance when comparing 9-46 hybrid sets, which seemed more out of whack for me. Can't say yet for longevity but assume similar for Regular Slinky which benefit from a string cleaning after each use.Axel

I recently had some repair work done on my 79 Peavey T-60 and the tech recommended these. I haven't played my T in years, and back when I did, it was in my garage band where we cranked out a lot of Zeppelin and Hendrix stuff. The T-60 offers coil splitting via the tone knobs. At 10, you get single coil. Below that, you get a variety of full humbucker tones. It has a 25.5 inch scale. It's a perfect cross between a classic Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul, with some Telecaster tossed in on the neck pickup. I'm finding this time around with the T that I'm really enjoying the clean tones I'm getting, playing through a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue, as well as playing through an overdrive pedal (to get some dirt without scaring the dogs out of the room). I'm never sure with strings how much is sales talk and how much is legit technical merit, but I am finding I am enjoying the feel and the variety of tones I'm getting – single coil or bucker – from myT with these strings. I've got about six hours play wear on them so far, and there is no visible discoloration so I'm thinking they should last as long as they claim, to justify the price, which is the only reason I don't give them 5 stars. If they do last a good while, I will come back and update my rating. So far, I am happy.William in Carrollton
Have almost every string. Have a new Eastman t486, 335 clone, that has not sounded right with other strings. Latest we're Tite Fit 10s but they were muddy on this git. The Gibson Vintage 10s are full, smooth with great overtones. Very musical strings. They also allowed me to lower the action to spec without buzzing. I have tried many other strings but have found none that can equal these Gibson reissue pure nickel. I have tried D'Addario, Ernie Ball, and others but these are the best sounding strings i have ever used hands down! I LOVE these strings. I have about 5 sets of Ernie Ball regulars in my guitar case but they will remain there and never get on my guitar. Why? These Gibson's are SUPERIOR and literally sound 5 times better than any other string in my opinion. I can't get over how good they sound. I know I am over the top here but to me they are that good. They have a deeper full beautiful tone and they stay in tune better and they just make my guitar sound so good. I am hooked on these strings. I just ordered 4 sets as I am scared as hell that they will discontinue them for some reason. (notice they are REISSUE). I found out Malcom Young used Gibson strings (heavier gauge than these though) and that says it for me. I consider Malcom Young to have been a very good judge of guitar strings. Prior to playing Cleartones, I played GHS and Ernie Ball. Not a thing wrong with the strings, aside from the fact that they wore out incredibly quickly. I used to work as a salesperson at Guitar Center and I've played on almost every string sold at GC. I will only play Cleartones on all of my guitars now. They don't go dead as quickly as your standard DR's or Ernie's, etc. They hold their sound throughout the duration of their life, and you'll notice a drastic change in the tone when they wear out, unlike other strings that lose their tone consistently every time you play. I've had a set of cleartones on since June 13th (today is 7/5) and I've played six shows and had 8 or 9 practices in that time span. The strings still have the same tone as they had the day I put them on. I am also a stickler for maintaining my guitar, and I try to wipe the strings off as much as possible after I play. If you play consistently on stage and find yourself replacing low-end strings every couple weeks, make the investment and purchase the Cleartones. Just as a comparison, three packs of Ernie Ball's last three months if you play for two hours a day. One pack of Cleartones will last that three months and will cost less in the long run than buying three packs of Ball's.
My personal favorite coated strings, they have a great balanced tone perfect for rock and roll. They last forever, and keep their tone for months even with heavy playing. They have a warm low end and snappy responsive highs. I typically don't like coated strings as I find they impede my playing, however these strings feel like there's nothing there! I really like the tone and flexable feel of these strings. They have a good sound that does sound to bright or feel to slick, unlike elixers. I will probably purchase again if i find a great deal on them but unfortanatly i didnt get my moneys worth because the g string broke in two weeks. The only other thing i didnt love is that the big e string has so much wrapping at the ball that i had to jam my pin in a little more than was comfortable to hold it in. All in all the positives outway the negatives, the biggest thing to improve on would be durability.tyrw21
