20 Best Strong Hold Hair Products (Feb 2023 Update)

I just tried this out to style my old school crew cut. I find that it leaves my hair looking and feeling much more natural, smooth and shiny than the water based pomades. It's also really nice that it's reworkable throughout the day. Also, like everything suavecito makes…it smells amazing! Like everything in life, there are trade offs. As many have mentioned, this stuff does take a while to wash out even for me with a relatively short crew cut (about 1 to 1.5inches on top). I'd imagine the longer your hair, the more challenging it'd be to wash out.Tom

Amazing pomade my son has thick hair and I was first using the cremo pomade however after some months it was no longer holding his hair up and I searched for a new one and landed on this one. All I can say is that it’s AMAZING it hold his hair up in the style that he loves and leaves a shiny wet look on him if that’s what he wants if not he just combs it and the shine diminishes for a more natural look. I have been using this product for years (4-5 years). I have thick hair, and the strong hold was really the best. There is nothing "strong" about this product any longer, it has changed…why? It used to be thick and actually strong, not too shiny just perfect. Now it doesn't hold my thick hair in place, and just running your finger through the tub, you can tell it has changed, it's more like the original hold now. I tried to contact customer service to ask if it in fact has changed, and why. No response! No problem, on the lookout for a new brand that ACTUALLY offers a strong hold.Emil B.

This thickening spray is amazing! I have not tried this as a heat protectant spray, I’ve only used this as a hairspray for my curls. I can’t attest to whether this protects as a heat protectant spray, or whether this thickens hair. I’ve worn my hair curly and I already have thick hair! I will say this clumped my curls beautifully!!! The smell is amazing, I got compliments every-time I’ve used this spray. I plan on using this as a heat protectant spray in the future. I think this would be amazing for curly girls who wear their hair in a ponytail or wants their curls to clump! It kept definition in my curls when paired with a gel and leave in. Just got this a couple days ago from #sephora couldn’t hardly wait to try it. I used a generous amount, in sections, on my damp hair (right after the shower….wash day) and let my hair air dry half way, then followed the rest by blow drying it with my on low force, but medium heat. Oh. My. Gawwwww. This stuff is amazing. My hair felt, looked, AND stayed “thick”! It wasn’t sticky or crunchy like most thickening sprays and it smells soooo good. It actually made my hair extremely soft and manageable. It looked healthier, shinier, just overall……beautiful. Now I completely understand why #oribe had products that are a bit pricy; they’re literally top of the line. If you’re a thin haired girl like me….go get this! The product is great. Not only does it have great hold but it washes out easily and when paired with other Forte Series products such as the Argan oil and Sea Salt Spray I can style my hair with ease. I only need to use a small amount so I’m sure it will last for awhile. Not to mention the sleek packaging and inviting scent. Alex and the team have done a great job in delivering a high quality product. The only reason I haven’t given it five stars is the price. Due to international shipping to the UK, the cost was pretty expensive and surmounted to roughly a 1/3 of the entire order. That's pricier than any other product I have bought from the US. This is the best men hair products ever the texture clay works really nicely. I have been looking for good hair products for so long and finally found one that was not good but perfect. This stuff is magical. This does more for my hair than blowdrying. It gives you the blowdried carry and volume and an excellent hold too. Touch up with some product if you want but it might not even be necessary. This is a daily essential for me.Matthew

This is my first foray into pomades, and I was braced for something between a hair oil and the crunchy gels of the 80s. I was pleasantly surprised to find Cremo delivered something far better. This pomade is a solid hold, especially when worked through do hair, and it holds for 24 hours, if not longer. I've been able to mist water on my hair and comb it back into place after sleeping for a second day's hold. It doesn't have a strong smell, which is great — nothing to compete with my aftershave and cologne. I have 3a/b curly hair, ringlets with big volume and I thought I'd never be able to wear my hair straight without using a straightener religiously. And with this product alone, I can wear my hair slicked back and mostly straight in a Peaky Blinders cut. That's the kind of hold Cremo delivers, and I'm a convert for life. Last year, my wife tried to get me my old styling cream, which is something I usually do myself at the salon after a cut, and couldn't find it. I was very thankful for the gesture, but a little skeptical of this product she came home with (Cremo styling – high hold, low shine). After I tried it, though, I was blown away! I recently received this Cremo Thickening Styling Paste #freeproduct from #trywithtopbox to try in exchange for an honest review. This is the first time my fiancé is trying a styling paste, he usually uses hair glue for his hair. He found that the product was easy to use and work into his hair. The texture of the paste is really soft and not at all sticky or tacky. It however does not have as much hold as his usual hair glue. He actually has pretty thick hair to begin with so he couldn't tell if there was a thickening effect. However, he said he really loved the scent of product. Most hair styling products he has tried usually smells waxy or has a overwhelming perfumy scent. This one smells like an old fashioned barber shop. He also liked the consistency of the product so he is looking forward to trying another product within the line but with a stronger hold.Icbeautybliss

Eco booster is my favorite gel. It holds my edges all day without having to reapply later. It gives my edges a sleek look with added shine and it helps that it also has a great smell. I'm a natural girl and it was so hard to find a gel that could lay down my hair and thus gel did it! Only downside is that it does create a white residue if you use too much product so you have to be careful with how much you use. I found that wetting a towel and wiping down my edges before I apply works.katrina.t

I've seen this on Instagram for so long and finally decided to buy it. All the hype is true this stuff is amazing. I could never lay my edges down they just curled back up with other edge controls. This pomade feels greasy when you apply it but it sets and won't budge. There is no dull cast the hair looks shiny and is not hard at all. The small jar is 4 dollars and is tiny. The medium size is 10 bucks well worth the money. A little goes a long way so this will last a while. It comes in different scents. I picked up apple and it smells like a knockoff dkny perfume. I will be trying more products from this brand and stocking up on the bigger jar of control. I think this is a must for my natural girls who love a sleek puff or crisp parts.dana.t

When I first started using this product I was amazed. It works so well and smells delightful. This lays my edges so well and they stay in place all day, even in the Louisiana heat and humidity. The only issue I have started to experience when laying my edges while wearing passion twist, is a build up of the product. This causes it to turn white and I am unsure if this is a reaction due to the oils I put on my twist, but I did not have this problem using this product with my wash-n- go's.tierra.b

I was really unsure how this would work for me and concerned that it would feel sticky or greasy on my hair, but I am very pleased with the results so far! I started with a very small amount and warmed it on my fingertips and gingerly began playing with my style. Immediately I had a bit of piecing and the appearance of movement but it didn't darken my hair or make it look greasy or as though it was full of product. Then I used the spray and voila! I purchased the Gentlemen's Pomade after watching Marcy Dixon's tutorial. It was very similar to other products that I've tried in the past; too much like putting "glue" in my hair. I didn't like the waxy stickiness after applying the product. I only used a tiny bit (size of a dime); I can't imagine if I had used more. I've gone through hundreds of cans of this stuff over the past 5 years. It's an absolutely awesome product and is the best on the market. I'm writing this review because of two issues that I've consistently experienced over the years, that would be awesome if they could be improved and, if it is improved, this hairspray would be literally perfect. The first one is that about 1 out of every 3 (minimum) of the cans I purchase stop working properly with around 1/2 to 1/3 of spray left in the can. I've tried all the tricks cleaning the nozzle, removing it, etc., to no avail. It will either just sputter out a bad mix of propellant and spray, or you can hear a little bit of propellant coming out, with no spray along with it. The can becomes effectively useless. The second issue, much smaller, is the consistency between batches with regards to the fragrance (which fortunately goes away once the spray dries). One out of about every 15-20 cans will have quite a strange odor that honestly smells literally like a garbage can. And within this past month, almost every can I purchased had a different, new strange odor that's a bit hard to describe, but almost smells like… rotting olive oil? Again, very minor because the smell is only there when the spray is wet (or my hair gets a little wet after the spray dries), but still. Anyway, this spray is wonderful, please keep up the great work guys, thanks for this amazing product!IBuyTooMuchHairspray

Screaming hold? Where? This is t the greatest hairspray and in my opinion a minimum at best. It seems more of like a medium hold. You can’t come close to even comparing it like Freeze it hairspray. The difference in hold isn’t even on the same level. This does the job as long as you’re not looking for a All day hold or a super hold!dawn.g

This works great to glue on a front lace wig to your forehead without having to worried about peeling off your forehead. Or you can do a slick pony tail with this just remember this will give you white residue on your hair after a day so that why I mainly use it for wig but this holds a lot. This you can purchase it at the beauty supply for about $8 or at Walmart for about $4 for the big can. Anyways, I highly recommend it. Just spray the lace part use the back of a comb to make it flat on the forehead use the blow drier and bam you’re done. Looks great, just remember to clean around your forehead with a cloth with warm water since the spray might run down your face sometimes.jessica.c

After hearing RAVE reviews about this product, I finally took the leap and purchased a small travel sized version in the hopes that it would be the answer to my miserably limp, fine hair. Although I was wowed when I first applied it, as the day wore on, I was pretty disappointed. PROS: Smells great! I'm not as enraptured as other people seem to be with Oribe's signature scent (to me it smells like nice salon shampoo, nothing much more?), but it does feel luxurious and clean when you spray it in compared to regular high street brands which can be a bit headachey and chemical smelling. I tried it both in my roots and all over layer by layer) to see how it held up, and honestly – it looks pretty. It gives you a nice, messy, undone kind of look that is effortlessly 'rolled out of bed' voluminous and wavy. I compared one half of my head to the other when using it, and there was a definite increase in volume and it looked pretty glamorous! CONS: You cannot. Touch. Your hair. AT ALL! Once I ran my fingers through it to fluff it up a bit more, the volume seemed to collapse and disappear ENTIRELY. It was super bizarre – even my boyfriend (who watched me spray it in and subjected to my 'are you SURE it's different? Different in what way? Is it nice big? Do you like it?') was surprised at how quickly it reversed back to my normal flat hair. I ended up spraying the whole thing again to try and get it back to being voluminous – very wasteful and I only have very fine medium length hair! Also – it leaves your hair feeling ROUGH and DRY AS HELL. I bundled it up that evening and when I woke up to brush my hair out, I was shocked at how horrible and rough my hair had become! I was really not impressed at all by that point – I have used drugstore products that have left my hair feeling much better and produce reasonable volume. Really outrageous in that respect given how much Oribe charges for this. Overall, I think this is a great product if you're the kind of person who can leave their hair alone once it's all done up – otherwise, any touching will make the hair collapse again. I feel like maybe this would work well with a mousse of some kind and a shine serum (Oribe has a great one in a blue tube!). However, this is a luxury product, and I should not have to purchase and invest more products just to make this work. However, I have friends and relatives who adore this stuff and swear by it. I'd still recommend it if you're already quite good at styling hair and you have lots of hair products already in your routine. But for me, it's going back to the store in a returns box!mun

I received the ORIBE dry texturizing spray free for testing purposes from Influenster and Oribe. I have long fine hair that gets extremely oily within hours after washing my hair. I have been trying to not wash my hair often and it looks absolutely gross after a couple of days. I have tried dry shampoo in the past but I hated how it made my hair feel heavy and I especially couldn’t stand the white powder that got every where onto my clothes. The ORIBE dry texturizing spray is an amazing alternative to those like me who despise the effects of dry shampoo. The spray is easy to use and the product comes out in a continuous fine mist/heavy burst. The spray has a luxurious pleasant clean perfume scent (floral/citrus) that is long lasting. I like to use the spray after the shower once my hair has fully air dried. I use the spray to slightly style my hair by combing it through and tossing my hair around to create volume. The spray is extremely light weight and it doesn’t have a crunchy strong gel like hold. A little goes a long way! I don’t think it’s intended for that anyway. What is most impressive is that the next day my hair felt like it had even more texture and volume. It made my hair feel fuller and richer. The spray is a miracle worker that works wonders over time. Tressame 4 has been my hairspray for years. Unscented, good hold without being sticky or wet. But the last can I bought with the "new look" was a totally different hairspray. I bought unscented as always but the smell is horrible, strong and overbearing. It is a wet spray as well. My fine hair goes limp with this "new look". I am returning that can to Walmart. I went to Kroger and bought 3 cans with the old look. Maybe by the time I go through 3 cans, Tresemme will go back to the perfect hairspray or I will find another one to become my perfect hairspray.Disappointed customer

At first, this spray needs a shake before using it and then once it has been shaken, it is ready to go. I always push down the spray head at the top which doesn't require too much pressure on it and then it should spray out a good amount of spray. I think the smell is too soapy, I don't like it and feel it is quite overpowering so it is best to spray this in a well ventilated area. The smell does seem to linger all day in my hair once I spray it, which is ok but I prefer when it tones down on smell during the day.When it comes to using this hairspray, I use it for everything whether it is styling my hair wavy and holding in the waves or an up do or even when my hair is down in a style, to ensure it stays in place. I don't like to go overboard when using this hairspray, so I always hold it quite far away from my hair so that it doesn't go hard and sticky. Once I spray it, I can feel it raining down on my hair to give a light hold on my hair and you can feel it lightly on the hair but not too much.After having this on my hair for a few hours, it still seems to keep my hair in place which is why I keep using this one. It has a great hold on styles and no matter what style I have, it never falls out of place as this hairspray seems to have a good holding formula without being too heavy on hair. I find when brushing hair, I don't get too much residue coming from it which is good as some hairsprays go really horrible after using them and give a lot of residue which isn't nice for hair.Overall, compared to other hairsprays this is definitely one of the better ones I have used in terms of holding power. It works well in keeping my hair in place all day whether it be my fringe I want to be kept in place or whether it is holding down stray or flyaway hairs this does the job. Like I have said before I am not keen on the smell but it isn't terrible and I can live with it as I like everything else about the spray which is why I keep buying this. I found this on sale at Ulta for 3 for $25… It's the PERFECT finishing product for my thick, straight hair. I've tried a TON of styling creams, lotions, sprays, and pomades over the years, but they all made my hair look flat, greasy, stiff, or didn't have enough hold to keep baby hairs from sticking up. This helps give hair a little 2nd day texture without making it look dirty, doesn't weigh hair down at ALL, keeps flyaways and baby hairs at bay, and keeps split ends from looking… split! It also doesn't make my hair crunchymy hair is still soft and has movement. I've used it before putting on hot rollers and it helps hold the volume all day! I received this as a sample from Ulta with another purchase I had made. I have thin, fine hair and I use this product either with a curling iron or curlers . It says it has #3 hold and it does. I cannot tell you how very pleased I am. I have actually gone two days without styling my hair and it still looks good. This is unheard of for me. I have used very expensive products very inexpensive products and nothing works for me like the EIMI Pearl Styler Styling Gel. I might also mention that I live in a very humid area.chrissipoo

Have used this for years on my fine, white, spiky short hair. Applied to damp hair it can spike hair from 1.5 cm to 3 cm without any falling over. Spikes last all day. Gives a lovely shine with is often difficult with white hair. Love it.Janne C.

I have been approached by women complimenting me on my hair after using this. My hair looks healthy, just a minimal hint of shine, and great volume even though I have semi-thin hair. One last thing…I can smell my own hair when wearing the product and I the strength of the smell definitely varies directly with the amount used. So, start light and wear it for a few hours. I have purchased Reformer from legit retailers in the past and has been one of the only products that keeps my hair styled all day long. This product appears to be a cheap knockoff that does not hold you hair for more than 20 minutes. It also smells bad and leaves an oily feel after. I am happy I have come across this product. It's not too heavy for my fine hair and provides enough support to get me through the day. I used this hairspray for years and it always worked great for my fine hair. I don't understand why the need to change a product that does well as is. Matrix recently changed the packaging and seems to have changed the formula too. It used to spray out a very fine mist that provided great hold, but didn't weigh down fine hair. The new packaging has a different nozzle that sprays out a much heavier and spotty spray. I actually get large droplets sprayed on my face and everywhere but where it is supposed to go. The new nozzle gets clogged easily, which never used to happen with the old packaging. I thought I was maybe mistaken in the comparison until I found an unused can of the old formula in the back of my storage closet. The difference was amazing. I will no longer be buying this product. If Matrix brings back the old packaging/formula I would reconsider, but in the meantime I have been trying out other competing products (a pricey endeavor) and have found a better product in the Paul Mitchell Super Clean Firm Style spray.AbbyD

I have been using hair gel in my hair for 25 years. I am a man with short hair and like my hair to stay put. I have tried many kinds but most were not strong enough. I have used this produce for over 20+ years and has not harmed my hair as one other review anticipated it would do. It is a very strong holding gel and If you use too much it will be like a helmet. So use a small amount and it will do wonders to allow you to shape your hair and it will stay put!Nick
