20 Best Styling Gel For Curly Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

i love layering this gel on top of innersense i create hold, which is my second topper gel. this ouidad gel pretty much seals and sets my style. the texture is slimy not sticky and creates amazing slip. it has anti humidity ingredients so i would say it does it great job keeping freeze at bay. unless you’re super active (like me lol) then expect your curls to not last too long. overall i would recommend this product! for reference i have 4b tight curls, coarser textures around the nape of my hair.curlyblackgirl

I have tried so many gels from lower price points to high end. I have 2C-3B curls, low porosity and regular porosity strands, shoulder length, and curly bangs. Lots of layers in my hair with the shortest being 2” on top. I particularly love this gel because of its runny consistency, which makes it super easy to glaze and rake through the hair. On top of average 80%+ humidity in summer, I work a job that often causes me to sweat. This gel holds up. I can get away with washing my hair once a week. When I need a refresh, I either simply add water which reactivates the gel or, around mid-week, dampen hair and add more gel. The cast created is buildable – less gel = softer curls with little cast, more gel = stronger cast. I prefer a stronger cast with this product, so I use a dollar coin sized amount THREE times on each side of my hair, working in sections. I say this because some people think this gel doesn’t make a cast, but maybe they aren’t using enough product. It is an expensive gel, but worth every penny for me.cassandra.m

I heard hundreds of recommendations for this gel when I started embracing my natural 2B-3A medium porosity hair. I bought it without question, and even ordered a second bottle (the huge one, too) after the first ran out. I thought the dryness/straw texture my hair got after application was just par for the course with gels since it was my first time ever touching gel. As I learned more about humectants and other ingredients in hair products, I realized that the high glycerin content in this gel is the culprit behind my frizzy locks. Doesn't matter how much or how little gel I put in, my hair frizzes and knots as soon as it's 50% dry and it gets exponentially worse if I apply any while refreshing. For anyone reading: if you live somewhere that's very dry or very humid, avoid humectants like glycerin in the first few ingredients (or at all). Humectants draw moisture from their surroundings, but if the air is dry as bone (like it is where I live), it's going to pull that moisture from your hair (and skin if it's in skin care products) and make it extremely dry. If the air is extremely humid, your hair will feel squishy and icky (and skin will feel oily) if you use products with glycerin in them. All that being said, this is a great gel. It's liquid so it coats hair easily and I never had any problems with it flaking. Its glycerin content is just not right for my environment. If you live in a moderately humid place, this will probably be a fantastic gel for you!Amber

I received this complimentary from Briogeo Hair Care for my honest review. I have fine curly hair, so anything with shea butter, super creamy formulas, etc. just weigh my hair down and make it gross. I LOVE this gel – it's not too thick or sticky, but actually feels moisturizing so I can use it alone if I've already done a deep conditioner in the shower, and it totally smooths frizz & helps my curls keep a soft hold. It works even better over the Curl Charisma Leave-In. I love the smell, too. It does not have super lasting hold, but it refreshes well the next day with just water without getting sticky or gross! This is the ONLY product I use in my hair. My hair is naturally wavy and frizzy. High density but fine strands. I’m pretty lazy when it comes to styling my hair. I air dry almost 100% of the time and this cream is a game changer. I know this is called a curl enhancer, and it is. It does a lovely job of sculpting waves/curls without the heavy weigh down, but I also use it to sculpt my hair straight and frizzless. If you put this in and scrunch, BOOM curls. But if you apply this and comb your hair straight it leaves it sitting beautifully the way it dries. It’s magic and makes your hair manageable. Not to mention is smells amazing. I noticed a lot of reviews recently posted for this product were incentivized, so I figured I would jump in quickly with an honest, self-purchase review. This has become my go-to gel for curly hair and I could not recommend it enough! Paired with a curl creme, this product gives my 3a/3b curls incredible definition for several days, preventing frizz, even as the curls soften. A little goes a long way; this is one of those products you have to play around with a bit to figure out what the right amount for your hair is, but once you get there, it will not disappoint. I avoided gels for a long time either on account of the smell or how clumped and sticky they would leave my hair, requiring frequent re-wash. I received this product complimentary from Bumble and Bumble in exchange for my opinion. I loved this gel oil. I emulsified a small amount and raked through from near the crown through the length and then another small amount to the ends and scrunched. I loved the finished product after diffusing and just air drying. Both ways left my hair curly but not crunchy. My curls had definition, it wasnt frizzy and I was very suprised that I had so much volume as have long hair. I love that this product is silicone and petrolatum free. I’m not sure if this is the exact same one that I’m leaving the review on, but the one I’m using is specially Bumble and bumble’s “Bb. Curl Gel Pomade.” This works amazingly for me for setting and holding my 2a/2b waves immediately after having applied and scrunched with my Ecoslay Curl Defining Orange Marmalade Cream to wet hair. It’s made my waves last and stay defined for much longer after wash day than when I don’t use it. It also tames frizz and flyaways nicely and smells amazing. I just scrunch some into my hair upside down after having used my curl defining cream and let air dry. (For reference, I have fine yet thick density hair that frizzes easily now that I’m 30, and high-medium porosity.)melissa.m

Both of the colors actually look really good blended together, but they also look stunning on their own. I bought the 2oz bottle, not a gallon but there's no option for it. So I used the sample sachet of the unscented version and I thought it was good sulfate-free shampoo. I wanted to try a scented one so I bought the 2oz Island Fantasy and I don’t know what went wrong. I had to use way more of the shampoo this time around to even get enough to work through to my scalp. When I rinsed it out this time it felt like my hair was stripped and squeaky and my roots felt tangled. When I used the unscented sample it was soft and felt smooth in my hair when rinsing out. I followed this up with my usual go-to Dove intense moisture conditioner and my hair is not drying the same. It looks dry, feels dry, and the frizz has been real. I’ve been trying to tame it by twisting and clipping it up in a bun all day because of how bad my hair has been looking. Is there a difference between the unscented and Island Fantasy? Really sucks because I’ve been wanting to find a good sulfate-free shampoo to use in between normal sulfate washes, but it seems like none of Jessicurl products work for me.julia.s

One of the things about gels that I run into is it not being being 100% compatible with very season. Some gels are good for all year round, while some gels work their magic best in certain seasons, but this gel right here work’s it’s magic no matter the season or whatever may come up, where your hair needs strong hold and ultimate frizz protection that you can count on truly all day long. This gel is glycerin free, for those who may be interested in such. It does contain alcohol listed as its last ingredient, but alcohol is actually a component t of one of the polyquat’s used in this product. So, alcohol isn’t added separately to this product, for those that may have been wondering. It is on 7/10ths of this product. Also, you do not smell any traces of such when you smell this product at all. The fragrance free version comes completely fragrance free, and this gel has a lightweight consistency (but is not runny), it dries clear, it doesn’t flake, and it gives y hair hold fit more than one day, which for me is a miracle, because with most stylers that I use, I have to refresh my hair with more styling product ASAP every morning. Because, after I sleep on my hair, even with a satin bonnet on, my hair typically be needing some extra help in the mornings, for sure. But, the hold on this product is fantastic. I can use this product on both wet and dry hair without any problems, but I do choose to use Jessicurl’s hairspray (which is alcohol free) to give my hair a quick pick me up or to take flyaways that may pop up in between my hair wash day. They do have a curl refresher within the Jessicurl line, but it just isn’t best suited for my hair unfortunately. But, their hair spray on the other hand works so much better at reviving my hair, whenever needed. This is a very universal gel that was created for all curltypes, all hair textures, and definitely for all races. So, if you haven’t given Jessicurl a try yet, I’d highly recommend checking out all that they have to offer and what products may suit your wavy, curly, or coily hair best for sure!sybil.w

Maybe I just have the worst luck with hair products or something because it’s such a struggle to find anything that actually works. I purchased a small 2oz bottle of this deep conditioner and I don’t understand what’s deep conditioning about it. It’s super-duper thick and hard to get out of the bottle which seemed like a good thing if it was moisturizing at all. The smell was nice and light but had a hint of a weird crayon smell that the other unscented Jessicurl products have. It had no slip and I was already kind of worried that it would not be moisturizing. I left it on and put a cap on for 30 ish minutes with a towel wrapped around my head to trap heat in. I also periodically used the blow dryer to heat it up inside the towel. I rinsed it all out and then put some argan oil and OGX Moroccan oil and wrapped my hair with a Tshirt. When I was letting it air dry after that, I could tell things were going south with how crispy and frayed my ends were looking. I JUST trimmed my ends a week before as well so this shouldn’t have happened if I deep conditioned my hair. During the drying process, my hair frizzed up a lot and looked super dry and crispy. My ends felt crispy and my ends were a tangled mess. I tried to smooth out my frizzy waves but it was still a terrible mess (photo on the right).julia.s

This product was a big “NO” for me. I have 4b/4c hair and have tried other brands of gels that define and moisturize. This product gave ok definition and completely lacked in moisture and luster. The pros are it has great slip and did help with a defined twist out, the cons was this dried my hair out terribly and then left flakes of residue. I love this gel! It's really good as the final step in my curl routine. I usually do a cream conditioner first, then an oil, and then this gel on top. I will say that if you touch your hair a lot after it's dried, it can get a little flakey – but if you want defined curls or if you want a slicked ponytail/bun look this is really good for keeping your curls slick without frizz or pieces coming out, and keeping in all your other hydrating products. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. I bought this a month or two ago, and I love this gel! Its so lightweight, but keeps my hair in place. The best thing about this is that its not sticky or tacky at all! You can apply loads as well and my hair wont become crunchy or dry, its so hydrating and smooth. Would definately recommend this to anyone who wants a environmentally friendly hair product 🙂vegpup

I bought this gel to style my curly hair with. I normally use the curly jelly by Umberto Giannini (which is my AMAZING also from Boots) but I wanted to try this out as I know a lot of American curly girls use this, and it's great that boots are stocking more US brands. Overall, I'd say this is an average gel. Not too expensive, and you get a large tub for the price and the ingredients are ok. CG friendly. It feels a bit sticky at first but that goes away quickly and it doesn't make the hair crunchy or dry. There are no flakey bits either, which is a problem I've encountered in the past. My biggest issue with this product is that it doesn't really give my curls enough definition. I ended up with soft waves rather than nicely defined curls. I applied the product to soaking wet hair, which is what I always do, and then scrunched and let my hair air dry for about 3 hours. I noticed that my hair dried very quickly and that the curls were very soft and voluminous but were lacking in their normal definition. This gel doesn't seem to provide enough of a 'cast' and therefore my curls seemed a bit lacking as a result. If you're looking for soft curls then this will probably be perfect for you but if you need a little more definition then this isn't the gel for you. It's not the worse gel I've ever used but it wasn't great either. I think I'll stick to my Umberto Giannini curl jelly instead. *Just wanted to add that on my 2nd day hair, my curls have pretty much all fallen out and now resemble very loose waves, almost straight! I thought this purchase was very good value for money. The product gave my hair lots of shine whereas previously it lacked lustre. I wanted it to define, loosen and hold my curls and it is the most effective product that I have used for this (believe me I have tried so many). It is best applied when the hair is wet e.g. after washing. I was even able to freshen up the curls between washes by just wetting the hair, plaiting and leaving it in the plaits over night. Just wetting the hair seemed to activate the gel that I had initially applied after washing. You need to gauge how much gel to use by experimenting. Too much will make the hair too crispy and stringy and I don't recommend using it on dry hair at all.Ruby red

Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. My process is LCG, I have oil that I use after wash day, but I tell you with this cream, you really don't need it. I didn't. Curl Talk don't ever change the formula!Robbin-Lynn

I have type 3c/3b Hair so I am always needing a good hair gel. I do like the original gel in this curl talk line. It provides adequate hold. Once this gel was introduced, I knew I had to try it. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. It will be easier to work through the hair and wont leave a tangles mess. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. So far I am very happy with this hair gel, I have consistently good hair days when I use it. I comb a styling cream through my hair, then scrunch the gel in, and blow dry with a diffuser. It makes my hair very shiny and holds the curl really well while still being soft and giving me lots of volume. My second day hair still looks great too. Third day hair does start to get a little bit of frizzies, but I have never found anything that keeps those away for more than two days anyway. When I wash my hair the gel comes out easily and doesn't cause a lot of tangles. It's a little pricey but a great product.Laila

I have very fine, high porosity (very absorbent), blonde curly hair. I don't have the best of luck with styling creams, some work and some weigh my hair down, some feel very crispy, some make my hair look instantly greasy. This stuff works! I wash and condition (sun bum regular or Pacifica pineapple curls) and then put a little of this styling cream into my wet but not sopping wet hair. Then I sleep on it and in the morning my hair is good to go. Nice natural looking and feeling curls that stay in. It detangles my hair also, which is great because the only time I dare brush my hair is right before a shower. Can't even use a pick on it, fingers only 😐Curly white girl

As someone who has stick straight hair, I love this product. A disclaimer, my hair is not capable of getting that cute scrunched look. If I want curls, heat is my only option. I shower, add the styling cream (smells amazing), air dry overnight, and then curl in the morning. This is the only product that I have used that will help my hair hold the curls in all weather and all day. I also use very minimal hairspray after curling. This truly is a magic cream for super straight hair that doesn’t hold a curl!becka

My hair is living her best life with this curl cream!! I've been Garnier-loyal for over 10 years, but after one use of this cream, I was sold. I have 3 different textures of hair: the front/sides are soft, tight spirals, the back is frizzy, tight spirals, and the underneath is soft and wavy at most. This curl cream brings out the best in all 3 textures and makes all of my hair wildly soft!! I've been a huge fan of Sun Bum for a few years now, so I was amped when I saw that they made special curly hair products! This costs about twice as much as my old curl cream, however, I use about 1/2 to 2/3 what I used to use, and my hair is 10 times as happy. Plus, I trust Sun Bum's commitment to loving the ocean, which is an important factor to consider when choosing your products. I've also been using it with shampoo/conditioners other than Sun Bum's until I finish my old stockpile, and this cream is a stand-alone master. This curl cream would be great for you if you’re not looking to have too much hold in your hair. It’s thick, but it doesn’t create a very strong cast for me. As you can see, my hair is already frizzing at the roots and it’s not completely dry yet. There’s no cast to scrunch out. The pump is also really hard to use and only dispenses like a dime size of product with each pump, which means I need to pump twice just to get enough for one section of hair. It is very hydrating, so I can’t knock it down too much, but it is probably my least favorite ouidad product, which is saying a lot because I LOVE ouidad. I gave it three stars because it doesn’t really work that well with my curly hair. I just started used ouidad products so there’s a learning curve. I have coily and s shaped curls. It’s a blend of two different types of curls. The gel would work very well for someone whose hair is not coily like mine. I need something a bit different or stronger. I would say that in comparison to million other products that I have tried, it’s one of the better ones. It doesn’t make my hair feel crunchy which is great. There’s minimal scent which is important for me as I am sensitive to scents. I would recommend this product for someone whose hair has loose or classic type curls.Amy L.

I've struggled with finding products to tame my type 3B curls for as long as I can remember. I have tried mousse, leave-in conditioners, gels, and all kinds of creams. The product is a clear gel and you need only use a dime or quarter size amount depending on how thick/long your hair is. The product has a very natural, floral smell that doesn't overwhelm you. I use this product every day with my Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave In Conditioning Cream and they work extremely well together. This lightweight gel helps tame frizz while also letting the curls keep their natural shape without any crunchiness or residue. I have used this gel for over a year now and it has become a staple in my hair-care products. The product locks moisture in your hair and leaves it hydrated all day. A bottle of this product lasts me about three-four months. This product really does it all when it comes to taming frizz and moisturizing curly hair, but that is to be expected given that the bottle is almost $30 for only 8.5 FL. OZ. When you think about it, this high price does get to be too expensive for a smaller bottle when you use this product on a daily basis, but I have yet to find any other products that work as well as this one does with my hair. I recommend this product to every curly-haired person I know! It has made styling my hair so much easier, hydrating and holding my curl all in one product so that I don't have to use multiple products to get the right mix of hydration and holding power.Susan

This has the texture of a cream more than a gel, but still has quite a bit of hold for a thinner product. I have 3B ish hair that is very easily weighed down when wet, and this did a great job of giving enough hold without being too heavy. I also liked that I could use a lot of it (to get the benefits of a creamier texture) without getting weighed down. I am looking forward to trying the rest of the line, as this was such a nice experience! I think it would work well for a lot of different hair textures, as you can easily layer it or use less depending on your needs. The only small drawback for me was that the scent is very perfumey- it smells nice, but I generally prefer my hair products on the less smelly side.Imss

I have weird hair: curly on the front but wavy on the back, thinning because of aging and quite dry. This is the first product I try from this brand and I am really enjoying it. PROS: – It has nourishing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil and cacay oil. – It leaves the curls looking defined and natural. – It leaves the hair feeling hydrated and very soft – It doesn’t leave a residue, and I tend to apply too much, so that’s good. – It smells so good (at least for my liking) CONS: – It is not a gel, but a cream (at least is how it looks) – It has a light to medium hold. First, I wouldn't call this product a gel. It's more of a cream gel, which should've been my first indication it wasn't going to work for me. Smell is good, product feels good. It provides a natural hold and my curls are very soft and touchable. However, I have high-porosity hair and need a product that forms a cast on my hair. This isn't it. If your hair is normal or low-porosity this product might work for you, but it just doesn't provide the hold that my curls need.Kristy

This product smells amazing! Love the way it makes my hair smell. It doesn't weigh my hair down, I only used about a quarter sized amount and scrunched it into the ends of my day old curls. I wiped the residual product left on my hands onto the top of my hair where I have a middle part. I would prefer to just wet my hair and use some leave in conditioner to reset my day old curls. I feel like adding this to dry hair increases the frizz/poofyness, but maybe I should have used more product to saturate the hair more. The bottle is kinda small so I didn't want to use it all up at once. If anything, I would use it just to have my hair smell amazing since it doesn't weigh it down.Damikal

I fell in love with this product and use it daily because of how well it works with my curly hair. It truly helps with frizz and dryness. After applying a little amount it makes my curls look nice and in shape. I have dry hairs, so it always tend to have frizz naturally. I use the defining gel cream gel and balm during a week to keep my curls in a beautiful shape. I love the texture, not thick not thin, not greasy or sticky. It is light and moisturizing. I also love the scent. These products are amazing and smell luxurious. Now all I use to treat my hairs is Ouidad hair products and I am happy with the results. My curls were loving the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control hair line! I received these products for free from Influenster and Ouidad in exchange for my honest review. I haven’t worn my hair natural in probably almost a year because it is a hassle to do so with having a baby, but I might try and go more natural with these products. They don’t make my hair feel crispy, and it doesn’t look like noodle hair from the gel 😂 the curls are still soft, and I know if I kept wearing my hair natural it would get curlier since I’d be taking a break from the heat. I’ve tried a lot of hair products and am super picky (also a licensed cosmetologist), I was pleasantly surprised by how well these products work together. was def excited to try a hair gel complimentary from DevaCurl for my honest opinion that claims to be not crunchy. I'm always very skeptical about products that claim to work hair miracles because I've experienced many let downs.. One difference about this is it says to work it in while curls are soaking wet. I still did get a little frizz but nothing like with what i usually use. I would purchase this and recommend it to other curly people. I did take one star for the frizz but would be curious to see how it holds up in an environment that's isn't as humid as whereI live.Laura

Yes! Her hair is fly-away frizzy with light curls like mine, and I think she'll appreciate this as I do. Even when I unthinkingly put a cheap gel on first one day (that I usually layer on when my hair is dried), it came out great with the 2 products piggybacked! And the effect lasts a few days between washings. I just need to fluff it up with a pic, even teasing parts a bit (I'm THAT old!) then smoothing over and applying hairspray. I did like the previous formulation better; I s'ppose the company got shamed into changing it (due to a TV documentary). But this is a great product for my fine hair.joyce

I used to use the Arc Angel gel and always liked it. I switched to Ouidad, which works great, but if I leave Ouidad on my hair for too many days without washing it, my scalp gets itchy. I saw Deva had changed the formula so I gave it a try. The gel has a nice thick consistency and you don't need a lot, which is great, however, you don't get nearly the definition and shine you used to get with Arc Angel. At the end of the day my hair is frizzy, the next day it's really a mess. I'm going to go back to Ouidad and just try a different formula. If you were a fan of Arc Angel, prepare to be disappointed.Mary

I used the old formula for years and had compliments on my curls constantly. I thought only the packaging had changed until I noticed it smelled like chemicals instead of light and fresh. The texture felt different, and my curls looked fried. The new formula trashed my hair, and people literally asked me what had happened to my nice curls. I have never tried the old formula so i have nothing to compare it to. i used a small amount after washing my hair, and its super crunchy and my curls are all tangled underneath. it smells really good and ill definitely give it another chance but will not be purchasing again! save your money try something else!madelyn

I'm 2C/3A and have used this gel for years and loved it; unfortunately, like their Decadence conditioner, it has been reformulated and it's horrible now. If sticky, limp, greasy curls are your thing, this gel is what you're looking for. It no longer holds the way it used to, smells awful, and leaves my hair frizzy and greasy. I have switched to other products and will no longer use Devacurl. I'm very disappointed in the reformulated products. It makes my hair look and feel awful, and dried it out.MBear
