20 Best Styling Products For Fine Thin Hair (Feb 2023 Update)

This is my first foray into pomades, and I was braced for something between a hair oil and the crunchy gels of the 80s. I was pleasantly surprised to find Cremo delivered something far better. This pomade is a solid hold, especially when worked through do hair, and it holds for 24 hours, if not longer. I've been able to mist water on my hair and comb it back into place after sleeping for a second day's hold. It doesn't have a strong smell, which is great — nothing to compete with my aftershave and cologne. I have 3a/b curly hair, ringlets with big volume and I thought I'd never be able to wear my hair straight without using a straightener religiously. And with this product alone, I can wear my hair slicked back and mostly straight in a Peaky Blinders cut. That's the kind of hold Cremo delivers, and I'm a convert for life. Last year, my wife tried to get me my old styling cream, which is something I usually do myself at the salon after a cut, and couldn't find it. I was very thankful for the gesture, but a little skeptical of this product she came home with (Cremo styling – high hold, low shine). After I tried it, though, I was blown away! I recently received this Cremo Thickening Styling Paste #freeproduct from #trywithtopbox to try in exchange for an honest review. This is the first time my fiancé is trying a styling paste, he usually uses hair glue for his hair. He found that the product was easy to use and work into his hair. The texture of the paste is really soft and not at all sticky or tacky. It however does not have as much hold as his usual hair glue. He actually has pretty thick hair to begin with so he couldn't tell if there was a thickening effect. However, he said he really loved the scent of product. Most hair styling products he has tried usually smells waxy or has a overwhelming perfumy scent. This one smells like an old fashioned barber shop. He also liked the consistency of the product so he is looking forward to trying another product within the line but with a stronger hold.Icbeautybliss

I like this product. I've been using it for a while. It definitely has a good hold on your hair without making it look like there's anything in your hair. I would recommend maybe adding some natural ingredients to make it smell a little better, if possible. Also, I don't know who did the wrapping, but filling up the entire box with confetti paper for a small container of this cream pomade was not the move. If it's like an environmentally friendly thing, I get it, but find a new option. The confetti paper is a mess and leaves behind a lot of paper powder all over everything inside the box and then it got on my hands and on the floor.S Merchant

This rich yet lightweight cream spreads easily and provides a light hold with low shine as described. Its aroma is quite similar to Fiber and its performance is what I would imagine a light gold version of that product to be. This would be great for medium to coarse hair in short styles that seek natural control without the need for major sculpting or manipulating. If you seek something with a low shine finish but more substantial and/or element-defying hold then try Fiber or perhaps combine the two products for customized control.ReadySteadyMoJo

I received the Living Proof full thickening mousse free for review from PINCHme and I've honestly really enjoyed this product. This mousse is said to boost volume while holding your style and I would definitely agree with that claim. Its lightweight and smells quite nice. It's not a super airy mousse but it's not super dense either. It doesn't evaporate right away but it's not heavy or sticky at all. I have pretty long hair so instead of the standard egg size I typically use maybe two egg size dallops. It has been way too hot and humid here lately to do much with my hair, and while the directions say to blow-dry, I just can't. I apply it to my damp hair right after my shower and then I tie it up in a bun. When it's fully dry and I let it down, it's so full of volume and the texture is lovely. The waves are beautiful and they do hold all day. Many products of this type cause my hair to get frizzy and almost static like but this one doesn't do that. I get no flyaways or frizz with this mousse and my hair smells so great. It's a nice, light clean smell, very subtle. I've really enjoyed using this product and I would definitely recommend it. Oh, and I like the packaging as well. The button you press to dispense the mousse is a nice solid button. For those of us that have hands and fingers that might not work so well, I had no issues.ARain

For Baby Fine Hair People: This works! It's the only product I've found that actually makes my genuinely baby fine hair look thicker and appear to have some body. The effect lasts all day and onto the next if you decide not to wash your hair every day. I use it sparingly and blow dry carefully though, because it does make your hair a little stickier before it's dried. That can cause baby fine hair to break when combing. So use it, be very gentle when combing or brushing, and enjoy. This product works better for my baby fine hair than the Living Proof Full Thickening Cream. I found that product to be too greasy and it weighs my baby fines down. I wrote a long review about the LP Thickening Cream and dealing with baby fine hair in case that's helpful to anyone. My one complaint about LP products, or any in general, is fragrance. I'm picky about scents and would never wear this scent as a perfume, so why would I want it anywhere on my body? I wish all these products had a fragrance-free version.asnetall

On Baby Fine Hair and this product: I have real baby fine hair. Lots of people talk about having baby fine hair, but really don't. It's a mixed blessing. Straight baby fine hair is so smooth that clips, bands, etc. can slide out of it unless there's silicone on the inside of a clip to grip the hair. If your baby fine hair is light in color, it may be almost see-through when backlit. This is not great if you want to feel like you have a nice full head of hair. If you take a strand of baby fine hair and hold it parallel to the floor, the strand itself is such a small diameter that it forms almost a sharp 90-degree angle hanging straight down from the edge of your fingers; no curve of any sort as it hangs down. It's hard for straight baby fine hair to hold a curl unless you do harsh stuff to make it hold. That, in turn, damages your hair. Almost any processing damages baby fine hair. It's also very easy to break strands of baby fine hair so you have to comb or brush carefully. Baby fine hair will blow everywhere if there's the slightest breeze. In my case, that means I've always got messy hair. Light baby fine hair is a pain if it gets blown onto your face or into your eyelashes. You can feel it's there, but it's hard to see the individual delicate strands and hard to detect them with your fingers. That's the scoop on baby fines. You live with it and figure out how to deal with it. BUT, straight baby fine hair can be so shiny and smooth that it can look and feel as luxurious as silk when it's in good condition. Like babies' hair! This can be lovely if your hair is thick enough. I've tried this product as directed with bad results. The product is too oily or thick even when put on extremely sparingly, so it weighs my hair down, making it look unwashed and stringy. So, I decided to try to use it as a rinse after shampooing, and have had better luck. I distribute it throughout the hair from roots to tips and then rinse it out. Baby fine hair people will feel a kind of stickiness or roughness once it is rinsed out, and will have to comb their hair carefully so as not to break it, but it adds product in just the right amount for real baby fine hair to have some bounce and look thicker without weighing it down or making it look greasy. It's not going to be a dramatic difference though. I have had far better luck with the Living Proof Thickening Mousse. After trying what feels like hundreds of conditioners, mousses and creams that did nothing, LP Mousse has been my go-to product. It's the only product I've found that makes my hair look thicker and that lasts all day looking great. It makes me feel almost like I have normal-people-hair! But I take breaks. I found that blow-drying damages my hair too easily, and the mousse, although super effective at making my hair look thicker and giving it more body, makes my hair sticky enough that I break hair easily, even when combing gently. So, Baby Fine Sisters take note. You have to handle your hair really gently with these products. Personally, I'd opt for the LP mousse over the cream, and be gentle with my hair. I had been looking for a new hair shine spray. I have medium/dark brown hair with blonde highlights, and my hair is very dry and damaged from using heat and dying/bleaching in the past. I’ve had my hair colored in just about every color you could think of so my hair is very damaged. It’s getting way better now but a few months ago it was completely unmanageable. I like using shine sprays because they make your hair so much healthier and glossy looking. My current shine spray is Garnier Brilliantine Shine Glossing Spray. It was only 7 dollars, has great ingredients, and gives amazing shine without looking or feeling greasy. I had been thinking about getting this matrix shine spray for awhile. Ulta was having a huge sale on matrix products so I used that opportunity to pick this up. It was only 10 dollars so I got it half off. I usually LOVE matrix products, and even though they’re pricey they tend to be worth it especially when you have more problematic hair. This was a disappointment. First of all the smell is terrible. Usually their products smell great but this literally smells like those lemon hand wipes you get in little single packets. It’s not unbearable but definitely not a good smell especially for a hair product. Nobody wants their hair to smell like lemon scented cleaning supplies. Good thing the smell doesn’t last because it’s not a good one for a hair product. Now, I could put that behind me if the product worked well but it didn’t. It literally didn’t add any shine or gloss to the hair. It didn’t feel heavy or greasy or sticky on the hair, but it was basically like it did nothing. Since I got this half off I wasn’t TOO mad but still disappointed. I’ve tried a lot of matrix products and this was the first one that had been disappointing. Definitely don’t recommend. I hesitated to buy given the mixed reviews but have had great results. Worked much like a good mousse but easier to apply and less residue. My hair type is thick (as in a lot of hair) but fine (as in the texture is straight and silky) so it pretty much lays against my head. With the product applied before blow styling, I get crazy volume for a couple days. Love that washing my hair daily isn't mandatory due to product build-up/residue.LisaSTL

This creme is INCREDIBLE. If you have 2c-3a HIGH POROSITY & PROTEIN THIRSTY hair, this will be amazing for you. I have 2c-3a very low porosity, protein sensitive thick hair. Unfortunately this over-proteinized my hair type after just one use. By the second, my hair was strawlike in texture- though my curls were still beautifully enhanced with a lot less frizz & super bouncy. Both of which are hard to achieve as I'm just starting my curly hair care journey. I'm only taking a star off because it feels exactly how it describes- a lotion for your hair. You know how when you put hand lotion on? And you wash your hands later and the lotion reactivates? That's sort of what this feels like on the hair, except it never really dries down. It also felt like it created buildup because of that. By the second time of use, I felt like I had to wash it out with clarifying shampoo. I used a big amount the first time, and small the second- not really any difference in feel, just less curl definition. But that is virtually the only downside this product had. Just make sure your hair actually NEEDS the protein this packs, if it doesn't then this will kill your hair.k

I use this on damp hair and let it air dry. Before this product I had flyaways and frizz. However after using this product I can definitely say that my hair looks amazing! I can't imagine how much better it will look if you use heat styling tools! I would recommend for anyone to try but note: you really don't need a lot. I have hair to just past my shoulder blades and I only use a dime size as recommended. I accidentally used more the first few times and it didn't work as well, but now that I figured out how much I need it definitely makes my hair look and feel amazing! I purchased more select thick it cream. It was in sale. Second time ordering this product. I was skeptical thir first time I used it thinking it is not going to work. Another gimic amd money grabber. But gosh!! I have extremely sensitive skin and very very fine hair that is thinning. The select thick it cream did not weigh my hair down and it really did make my hair look a bit thicker. I am a relatively new user of the products here – for a couple of months. My experience with every product has been superb. My hair is colored, on the coarse side, can run dry and flat. I use the Thick It cream for this purpose. I also use a conditioning spray they offer.- don't have name with me – that works great. I love their hair polish (like to use that on dry hair for smoothing purposes),.dry shampoo as needed, and hair spray. I met my often horrible sister for lunch last week and she NEVER says anything nice to me, but she said that my hair looks amazing. I almost choked on a carrot. This product does a great job thickening appropriately to my hair needs. Oh and I actually mix it with the conditioning spray and it's perfect. It is hard to find a company whose products you want to stay with – there are so many choices out there and holy grail status often feels like a thing of the past, but right now, I'm planning on not cheating on L'ange. Get this NOW! I’ve used this on and off for years from my mom because her hair dresser likes to use this on her , and I can’t explain it but this is the best hair serum/oil I’ve ever used. This product is amazing! First and foremost, it smells heavenly! To be honest, that's the reason I first starting using it, because it made my hair smell great. All I do is apply one pumpful (the perfect amount for my long hair) into damp hair right after I shower. Then one day I decided to see if it made any difference to my hair and so I skipped using it. My hair was awful! Frizzy and dry feeling, constantly in my face, dull looking etc. Needless to say, I realized that this product is amazing. I hardly ever use a product until I empty the bottle. Sometimes I get bored with a product, sometimes I don’t really feel like the product does much, so I will put it on the shelf and forget about it. This was not the case with the thickening treatment! I used it daily and loved what it did to my hair. On top of the long term affects of the treatment, I also loved how it calmed down my root area (which can be a little frizzy) and made my hair feel manageable, shiny, and healthy. This scent is very light and subtle. It did not smell too perfume-y or like chemicals either… The thing I loved the most about this product is it did not make my hair feel dirty or like I had a bunch of product in my hair. I cannot stand feeling product in my hair and it is probably the main reason why I tend to shelf most products before they are empty! I can’t say enough about this product. I lost half my hair from iron deficiency and had to cut the rest very short to match up to new hair growth but was still very thin overall. The first time i used this on my damp hair after my normal styling products,my hair looked instantly twice as thick. Even my mom said my hair looked suddenly thicker without me even pointing it out. I will never buy these products ever again. I used the thickening treatment, growth drops, and root spray one time. It completely changed the texture of my hair, made it rough and hard and when I combed my hair it came out it clumps. I lost about 3-4 inches of hair because of these products. I had shoulder length hair and now my hair is to my ears. It ended up being choppy and uneven, and I had to cut the damaged hair off. I am completely devastated and just cried seeing how these products ruined my hair. I wouldn't recommend these products to no one. I have to go through a hot summer wearing wigs now. I've tried a number of American Crew products and this one just doesn't work for me. It has less hold than the pomade, in my opinion, and leaves my hair looking greasy to the point that it looks like I've worked out and didn't shower afterwards. I recently bought the dyson AirWrap in the spring sale, and I was getting soooo frustrated with it because my long, fine (but very thick) hair just would NOT hold the curls. They fell out within 20 minutes! I really didn’t want to return it though, so I started looking for products that might help. That led me to this spray. I love Oribe products, and this seemed like a good option because it simultaneously gives my hair some grip, and also dampens it slightly (which is critical for the dyson airwrap). I start by sectioning my hair (I do three layers), and I spray this onto each section right before I use the barrel attachments. After each section, I do a small spritz of the Living Proof Control hairspray as well. The first picture is my hair when using this spray, and the second is without. Worth every penny!Katiwould

This is truly an amazing product. I have hair loss issues on and off and found this product last year. I have very straight hair; this product makes my hair abundant and vibrant. At first, I worried about the alcohol smell that it has as I am very particular about what I put in my hair due to the hair loss issue, but I alternate with Sisley's Hair Rituel Volumizing Spray (also a wonderful product), and I have not had any negative reactions. I usually spray at the roots, massage in scalp very gently and wait around a few minutes for my hair to be less damp; finally, I blowdry. So, a few things. This has a high alcohol content. Which makes it SUPER drying if sprayed liberally. When I first got it and started using it, it had an instant va-va-voom blowout effect. Which can look weird at first, because the alcohol made my hair a bit stiff like straw. But, I experimented a bit and hit a sweet(er) spot when I'd spray on some leave-in conditioner on my hair (not at the roots but lower down) and then use this concentrating on the roots but also spraying it all the way down. I cut down how much I used, but realized I still need a fair bit of it for it to work. It made my hair look pretty good then! Buuut, it barely seems to have an effect anymore, weirdly. I used it today, for e.g., and there's no extra lift, volume or boost. Maybe my hair is a bit straighter with it. But that's all. And I'm not sure why but that initial effect only lasted a month-ish? For reference I have very fine AND thin hair. It can get super greasy / is at its best when washed daily. I'd get the small size if you're curious, and give it a try. When it worked, it really did work – it's one of only two products that has ever given me visible lift. The blowout effect would last for a few hours, but would wear off as the day progressed, so, keep that in mind. My 4-star rating is assuming it had retained the initial effect.GlowOverHere

For the past year or so, my hair has returned to a state of greasy last seen when I was a teenager decades ago. Add in that I have hyper sensitive skin and scalp and it has been a frustrating battle. I would no sooner wash my hair and the minute it was dry I could feel the grease. Trying sensitive shampoos meant to degrease only led to a dry itchy scalp and persistent grease. I recalled using Paul Mitchel products in my twenties. I was both excited and apprehensive because my skin is much more sensitive these days. The shampoos, as far as I could tell, did not specify sensitivity. I choose what I felt would balance my hair since that is what the description stated. The conditioner being Super Skinny. I used just the smallest amounts to start as a means to test for any reactions. No reactions and my hair has not felt this clean and itch less in so long. While I may not have work life balance, I have finally found products that balance my hair and keep the itch away.Balanced One

I am comparing this product to the discontinued Matrix Shaping Oil Cream – my all time favourite product. I have short, thick, coarse hair and let’s start by the smell – it is absolutely divine. The product is smooth and easy to apply with the pump and leaves my hair feeling soft all day with a lovely shine to it. Downside, I am finding I am using more than what I actually need to control the fine stray hair strands that make it seem I have a halo!!! Would make travelling difficult as you will need to decant product into a leak proof container. Does compare well to the discontinued Matrix product and overall it is a good substitute for me and my needs.Lunda

As all other Moroccanoil products, this has a great and lasting scent. I'm not entirely sure the point of this product, but I apply it to my hair after showering and it definitely makes my hair a little more manageable. I air dry my hair and it seems a little less damaged and a bit smoother. Not perfect, but definitely better. It smells incredible. All B&B products seem to but this is the most moreish fresh, herbaceous scent. It’s nice on ends, I always have a beachy dishevelled situation going on anyway so this isn’t necessarily going to be transformative on my hair but it adds a little shape and shine. Would recommend more for straighter hair types looking to look a bit more lived in.cecily

Soo happy this brand is now on the Q! I use the Hairdressers Invisible Oil shampoo and conditioner, the oil and this product to style. Perfection! I salon every 6 weeks, layered, mid length highlighted hair and this is the best! You do not need a lot either! The tube lasts a long time and I just bought my first one from the Q yesterday. If the large sizes of the shampoo and conditioner were available it would be great! I have tried many brands, but this just works for me. Love it, lots of shine with hair that behaves! I love applying this after I've styled my hair to make it look more sleek and polished. It really works well for coarse and frizzy hair that doesn't want to feel weighed down by an oil. A little goes a long way, I use this twice a week on average and it's lasted me over a year! I have very long hair too. Don't overuse this product or it will feel gross.smiah94

I have used this particular hair spray for years and years. But now Tresemme decided to change the formula. It doesn't hold my hair, but simply makes it hard and stiff and it's almost impossible to get a comb or brush through it without ripping out a lot of my very fine and thin hair. It is also extremely difficult to shampoo this hair spray out of my hair. I don't shampoo my hair every day because it is so dry, so I end up with a day or two of hair spray built up in my hair, which doesn't totally wash out. The build-up is awful. I'm so very sorry that Tresemme made this formula change. Please, Tresemme, bring back the old formula, otherwise, I do not recommend that anyone buy this product. I can't believe all the positive / 4-5 star reviews.Busy Homemaker

We bought this product for my cousins wedding. My wife did her hair and it looked amazing. It held up all night. I tried to help my wife brush out the tangles when we got home. From 11:20pm to 1:15am I brushed which made it better than worse, scrubbed tried to remove the product, used shampoo, and even dawn dish soap. Nothing was getting it out and all brushing did was make it worse. The product made her hair crunchy which is why we were trying to get it out. We are now at a salon as they attempt to get this out of her hair without having to cut any off… 0/10 would not recommend this product. Will be reaching out to customer support Monday. Our hair stylist even said this isn't how it should be.Unsoughtthought

I was using a pricey kerastace hairspray for years that was discontinued. Desperate for a replacement, I bought a number of brands. This was the clear winner.. I love this. I have fine hair. I need a strong spray that doesn’t look or become sticky, and one that lasts the entire day, whether it’s windy, hot….. Couldn’t believe this inexpensive drug store brand works just as well for me as a $40 -$50 product. I’m sold. Not interested in more expensive hair sprays any more. I love American crew products, and this fiber cream is by far my favorite of the line now. This product is not a thick cream, doesn’t dry, flake, or become hard, or greasy. A softer more moldable cream version of fiber for those who used it long ago. A very small amount in towel dry hair. My hair is about 3 inches and works great. A true medium hold. Y’know, these hair products are varied and it takes time and trials to find just the right product for you. This product works great for me. My hair is very fine but very dense. By that I mean each hair is silky and fine but there are tons of them. The liquid version of this is good too but gives a firmer result. I often combine them a bit. A little, like dime-sized dollop works great on my relatively short haircut. Not very expensive and it works well for me. I hope it works the same for you!DC

I used to love this product and I've used it for years. Like another customer review on here, I also think the product has changed and for the worse, unfortunately. The other review was from the UK, but I'm in the USA and I'm seeing a change as well. I've tried two different retailers and both purchases had the same quality issues. It used to be more solid to the touch and now it is much more gooey. It doesn't hold my hairstyle nearly as well as it used to. I was debating between one or two stars but decided on 1 as I would not recommend this anymore and there are better fibers out there.Sean

Gives you great volume, texture, and it soaks up excess oils in your hair, leaving you with hair that is touchably soft, but still with enough grit to it that it holds your desired style well, and without being at all crunchy feeling. Also the scent is amazing, it just smells so nice, I absolutely love it. I have a growing out shaved head with a mohawk section that when left to fall to either side of my head reaches about at my chin length wise, and this product has been my go to since I received it to give my freshly washed hair the little bit of grit it needs to help it not just fall completely flat and limp, as well as to use when my hair hasn't been washed in a week and is in desperate need of some oils being soaked up before I can look presentable to be seen by other living beings, all while giving me effortless style, and a good amount of volume that makes me happy. I am quite impressed with Living Proof's Full Dry Volume and Texture Spray. My hair is thin, soft, and wavy. I'm 2b on a bad day, 2c on a good day. I make sure to scrunch my hair upwards with my head flipped over, but this only helps give my hair more volume for a few hours. I used it after washing my hair and blow drying it to give my roots a lifted, tousled, and professionally styled look. This style lasted me the whole day after putting it in my hair. But it all comes out of this little bottle! My only complaint is about the fragrance. It smells like a cheap, fruity body spray. I would expect something much more refined from a $32 upscale product. Something that smells like true effort and thought went into it. This is a disappointing feature in this product because the fragrance wafts out with every head/hair movement, all day long. If I have to smell something so much, I want to like it. However, if you put that aside, it's a great product. If you similar hair/concerns as the ones I described, pick this one up. This thickening spray is amazing! I have not tried this as a heat protectant spray, I’ve only used this as a hairspray for my curls. I can’t attest to whether this protects as a heat protectant spray, or whether this thickens hair. I’ve worn my hair curly and I already have thick hair! I will say this clumped my curls beautifully!!! The smell is amazing, I got compliments every-time I’ve used this spray. I plan on using this as a heat protectant spray in the future. I think this would be amazing for curly girls who wear their hair in a ponytail or wants their curls to clump! It kept definition in my curls when paired with a gel and leave in. Just got this a couple days ago from #sephora couldn’t hardly wait to try it. I used a generous amount, in sections, on my damp hair (right after the shower….wash day) and let my hair air dry half way, then followed the rest by blow drying it with my on low force, but medium heat. Oh. My. Gawwwww. This stuff is amazing. My hair felt, looked, AND stayed “thick”! It wasn’t sticky or crunchy like most thickening sprays and it smells soooo good. It actually made my hair extremely soft and manageable. It looked healthier, shinier, just overall……beautiful. Now I completely understand why #oribe had products that are a bit pricy; they’re literally top of the line. If you’re a thin haired girl like me….go get this! LOVE! 10/10 recommend and am so happy I decided to give it a shot. Can’t wait to try more of their products.tess.g

I absolutely love this product! You spray it on damp hair, then blow dry to style. Spraying it on my hair did not leave my hair feeling heavy or sticky, and did not increase the drying time. I used a round blow dry brush and ended up with amazing results! I have fine, frizzy hair, so I usually have to style with a straightener or curling iron after blow drying but, honestly, I could just leave it as is. My hair has extra volume, but is also smooth and straight. I’m looking forward to using it again and adding curls to see just how much volume I can get! I will definitely be adding this to my go to products!sara.n
