20 Best Tankless Water Heater For Large Home (Feb 2023 Update)

I was hoping for so much from this product. Yesterday I took such a hot shower during lunch and then that evening when I gave my daughter a bath, it only came out lukewarm. My shower today was borderline cold. Tomorrow it may be hot again. I live in Northern VA and would not recommend this product. It ruins the experience of our new bathroom remodel. There's nothing worse than remodeling your bathroom to your dream bathroom and hearing your wife say, well that bath wasn't relaxing since she couldn't get hot water.ChristianMC

We purchased this unit about 1 month ago, replacing a Natural Gas water heater with 40g tank. The savings in space, and the removal of the fossil fuel device were our key drivers for this purchase. Our Electric bill has increased significantly, by about 50%, but because we never run out of hot water, showers tend to be longer. And now we can actually fill our tub with hot water without boiling extra water on the stove, so this also has increased our usage. There is an issue with temperature stability, when a toilet is flushed or other demand for water is turned on, the temperature swing is very noticeable. I have added a shower temp gauge, and have seen the temp drop from 42c to 39c when a toilet is flushed, it takes about 10-15 seconds to recover, and likewise, when the water demand drops, the temp goes up from 42c to 44.5c for several seconds. This shower valve has a pressure regulated flow control, so changes in the water will take some time to correct. Pros: Save on Space, endless hot water, retired fossil fuel appliance, not storing heated water we aren't using. Don't buy it…it's terrible,I bought the tempra24 plus from home depot, I installed all specified wires and circuits so it would work properly and efficiently but this this is horrible… my electric and water bill did go down even more than I had Anticipated but hate it…No constant temperature what so ever. Works great as long as you don't want to take a hot shower. Constant E5 code (cannot keep up with water flow) and shuts down the hot water so all you get is a cold shower. If you let the water just barly trickle outthen it heats up fine. I lost a lot of money setting this up only to find that it will not work unless the water is already warm. The tank failed and got water all in my house! I sent a warranty claim but never heard any response. I have sent pictures etc to show the product failed again i have yet to hear any response about the issue! Also i used the charts to decide what heater was right for my house but the unit never performed to our liking. This water heater cannot handle 4.4 gallons per minute. It could not even keep up with my shower or kitchen faucet. It requires a lot of power too. It takes two 40 amp breakers and 8 guage wire to power the elements. When it cannot keep up, it flashes an error code and the troubleshooting guide suggests putting a flow regulator that limits it to 2 gallons per minute (less than half its advertised capacity).claytomcge_6

Installed for roughly 3-months and have not experienced any problems. This water heater performs extremely well in our 1,200 s.f. home with 2 full bathrooms. Hot water is very reliable and flow capacity is perfect. Installation is a little complex. But I was able to do it myself by conducting proper research and viewing videos online. Exhaust duct required is very specific. So plan the proper vent kit according to your specific installation (roof or wall venting). I'm writing a point form review because I don't want to spend any more time on this very average water heater. We have two installed in different areas of our house and both behave identically, so it's not a "lemon" problem. 1. They both make a loud groaning noise when they fire up. I've tried everything – including increasing the gas pipe diameter and changing every setting I can – and still they groan. We may have to move one unit because it is disturbing a neighbor. 2. We wanted to use these as solar water backups. Once the inlet water falls below a certain temperature, they should kick in and maintain hot water. Nope; they don't fire up unless you increase the flow rate to a ridiculous level, eg full hot in the shower. Then you have to wait until they start and deliver hot water. Yes, flow rates during normal usage – eg, shower – are well within spec . This is the real deal-breaker. A fundamental design fault. Did anyone at Rinnai ever test these things? 3. They do NOT come with a controller. We knew this but figured we'd buy one, use it to set each unit up and then disconnect it. Nope; if you disconnect the controller, the unit reverts to non-controller settings. Dumb. 4. Totally agree that the manual is a joke. It's as if it was written only so that someone could tick a box and say, "Comes with a manual". (We also have two Rinnai FC810N vent free wall heaters and they also have inept manuals as well as having some crazy-stupid design faults such as a child proof lock that unlocks if the power goes out!) 5: Rinnai service is non-existent. They just say to contact a registered installer. There is ZERO support in any way for these things. 6. The mechanical build quality is quite high, very solid and good machine tolerances and finish. It's just a pity that the things don't work very well. In short, I would never buy another Rinnai product ever again. We decided to try a tankless water heater when our traditional unit stopped working, and chose Rinnai based on the great ratings and advice from a friend who performs installations. It's been installed for about 2 months. We've been thrilled with our purchase! I like that the unit is small and is mounted way up on the wall. Our utility room seems much larger without the big traditional water heater. It's pretty quiet when it's running. It takes a few seconds for the hot water to reach the tap, but we've adjusted to that. Initially the unit couldn't be set higher than 120 degrees F, but I was able to open the cover and flip the switch so I could set it higher. We've never run out of hot water since we installed the unit. I would certainly recommend a Rinnai unit. It's solidly built and a very good value.HuskyMom4949

It works fine, but it arrived in a shipping box with no manufactruer box inside, just the water heater. One of the dials has come lose and I had to screw it back on. There was no manual. There was no power cord, but it may not have come with one ( I couldn’t tell you since I didn’t get a box or a manual). There was water inside the unit. I think someone must have gotten it before me and then returned it and factory pure didn’t notice- that or the falsely sold me a used unit. I went ahead and installed it, though, because I had already opened up my water line and removed the old unit. As for the breaker tripping in other homes, as a licensed electrician of 26 years, I would advise you to take an amperage reading during operation. Most home owners do not have multi meters with an amp clamp so that could be difficult I understand. If the heater is not drawing over 55 amp during operation you may have a defective circuit breaker, it happens. Try replacing your breaker. If the heater is drawing over 55 amps ther is a problem with the heater.Andy A.

200 amp service. This thing pulling 66 amps . Heat pump pulling 90 amps . If wife cooks, cleans and drys cloths, I think it wont work. Lights dim now with heat pump on and water heater on. Bought through Home Depot which does no stock the stainless steel venting nor the required 3/4 inch flex gas line. Very important to have a contractor install unit. Set temp. to max 140 degrees. Customer rep. said that we could have a quaified technician install a chip to mother board to increase temp. to 150 degrees. Gave a 2 star rating because of lack of information on required materials to install.Tuba

This heater has replaced my old regular heater (with a tank). In overall I'm happy with the upgrade, but the feelings are mixed. Pros: 1. It takes a way much less space in the garage. 2. It really saves fuel! My natural gas bill for the water heating has dropped by 2x times. 3. No problem with the exhausted hot water in the house early morning. You use as much as you need with no worries. Cons: 1. If you upgrade form a regular heater, the existing exhaust cannot be usable. You'll have to make new holes in your roof or wall. 2. The blower motor is very loud. Even when feeding just one shower this device makes a lot of noise. 3. It takes time for the heater to ramp-up. In average it's about 20-30 seconds in the closest bathroom. 4. The heater has troubles adapting to the water flow. You'll have to spend about 5 minutes playing with the faucet before getting the right temperature. And if anyone else in the house enables a major hot water consumer, this game restarts. 5. This device has a drain line, which produces a substantial amount of condensate. You cannot just drop it on the floor. So, you'll need a drain line, and it cannot be a closed one (like the line from the washer). In my setup I've installed a condensate pump and attached it to the HVAC drain line (see the image).IgorZ

After a lot of trouble getting a unit that was not totally damaged (still some) in shipping, this unit has been working great for about a week of use now.It does take a bit longer than a tank heater to get hot water to the faucet (more than I expected), but overall it was worth the trade. We have 7 in our household and a 50 gallon water heater did not make it through for everyone to get hot showers/baths. I anticipate saving $50/month going from an electric tank heater to this natural gas tankless, but my plumber thinks it will be closer to $100/month in utilities savings. My plumber's tankless heater has been working in his personal home for over 17 years and still going strong. If we get the savings and the longevity, this will be a significant savings over the long haul. This tankless unit hangs up on the wall and freed up enough space in our laundry/utility room for us to be able to install a huge shelving unit which was a very nice bonus. And the room looks so neat and tidy now too without a water heater sitting on the floor taking up so much space.One other benefit we have noticed. About 3 years ago we installed a water softener in our house. It did make a tremendous difference, but after installing this tankless water heater the difference was even more dramatic than after the initial installation of the water softener. I suspect the old tank water heater was so full of mineral deposits that after treating the water with the softener, the water would then pick up minerals while going through the hot water heater. My plumber agrees. Either way the water has never been so "slick" in our house as it is after installing the tankless water heater (feels like you didn't even get the soap rinsed off it's so slippery). We are definitely enjoying not running out of hot water especially with guests staying at our home. Great tankless water heater from Rheem. Got continuous hot water and it pumps out plenty. I installed it myself and was up and running in a few hours. Works with 1/2 inch gas line if need be. The internal recirculation pump is an added bonus especially if you don't want to pipe in to your furthest faucet which may be difficult in a lot of cases. I'm using stainless braided water hoses in a small run for now but will eventually hard pipe it all in.MicDeezNutz

This water heater is perfect for my little house, endless hot water. Was somewhat of a challenge to DIY install but I made it happen. This unit drinks lots of power. Be sure you have room in your panel. Shark Bite fittings with copper plumbing is essential, much faster. Would definitely buy this again.rdricker81

The installation went into the area replacing an old Rinnai R85 . I chose this model since it had the same external dimensions. It was almost a plug and play installation. I had to raise the mounting about 2 inches due to a different vent pipe connection setup. Once mounted and connected the unit fired up and has been operating perfectly for a month.Daniel M.

The not water is plenty hot enough but takes a while to reach the bathroom compared to my old tank hot water heater. My installer says he has the same problem with his identical unit but is unable to remedy. This becomes a problem with my impatient wife. Overall, I guess I'm satisfied so far. The Rinnai water heater works well and saves energy but there are some issues that are specific to these water heaters and I am going to tell you the whole truth. Venting: The exhaust/combustion air vent is tested and listed for the unit and you can’t use any other vent. It uses outside air for combustion and is very safe. The direct vent sealed combustion vent allows Rinnai to be installed in bath rooms and bed rooms where traditional B-Vent water heaters cannot. There are limitations of how far away and were you can terminate the vent, check out the installation manual for that. Hot Water: It will make endless hot water until you turn off the tap, a minute, an hour, a week. It can only supply so much at a time, depending on your cold water temperature it will only run two or three fixtures at once. It is an ‘on demand’ water heater, not an ‘instant’ water heater, hot water will take longer to arrive at the fixture than it will from a tank water heater. Gas Supply: These water heaters use less fuel than a tank style water heater but when they want fuel, they want it now. Your tank style water heater required a gas supply of about 40,000 btu’s per hour, your Rinnai will require 180 to 199,000 btu’s per hour. Check you gas supply lines to make sure they have enough capacity for the new load or your new water heater won’t perform to its potential without upgrading the supply line. Expect some maintenance: This is an energy saving, high tech machine with a combustion fan, pc board and electronic solenoid valves to control water and gas flow. Your water quality will also determine how often the unit will need to be flushed, generally every one or two years. Flushing is done by using a small pump to circulate a solution through the unit to dissolve calcium deposits that form inside the heat exchanger. You should flush a tank style water heater too but most people don’t. If you don’t flush your tank less water heater the efficiency will be reduced and you may get inconsistent water temperatures. In the worst case it could plug the heat exchanger or cause it to leak requiring replacement. Finding service: This point can be a little sticky. Rinnai’s warranty isn’t affected by internet purchases but your online retailer won’t be much help. Rinnai has an online dealer locater but if you haven’t purchased the appliance from that dealer it is a little like bringing your own steak to the restaurant, they may cook it for you but they won’t guarantee the results. We renovated our basement and converted from electric baseboard heat to hot water baseboard heat. There are 2 temperature settings on our unit (a Rinnai RU98i) : 160deg. and 185deg.. We normally run at the 160 setting but during real cold snaps we boost the temperature of the H2O to 185. Unfortunately at the higher setting the unit keeps misfiring and cutting out so I have to revert to the 160 setting. Have had service in several times about this but not very successfully. Rinnai has a great reputation and the two RUC80iN Tankless water heaters live up to it. Its been 2 weeks since installation and no issues with the units themselves. They do not produce instant hot water but it is continuous once it gets there. Negatives: Unit hums when running and vibrates slightly. Would recommend installing on an exterior wall if possible. Installed an add-on Watts recirculating pump and it helps to move the hot thru the recirc. line but I am having issues with the timing of the on/off cycles. Can be an expensive purchase – need to search for a good deal. Shipping box and protection is very minimal from Rinnai. Buy shipping insurance! Positives: Takes up very little room compared to a tank type water heater. Continuous hot water, easy to adjust temperature, ease of installation (weighs a lot less than a tank type).mtsi1

Nicely made unit. Clean lines, nice display, lightweight, easy to mount. You'll need a terminal box to wire it up since it comes with it's own pigtail cable (they don't want you to open up the case since it will void it's warranty, apparently; multi breaker units might be different), so I bought an inexpensive 60 amp A/C unit type cut-off switch box with a pull out switch. Just mount it near the heater on the wall and run your 6 gauge wire to it from your breaker panel. I just wish they had included adapters so that you can plumb it to 3/4" piping, so you'll have to buy your own if you wish to connect it to your existing 3/4" pipe. I had trouble using pipe dope (maybe it was too old or the wrong kind?), so I switched to Teflon tape (5 layers) on each fitting and that did the trick. Love the easy to turn dial, press to turn on/off feature and easy to read digital display which comes on when hot water is called for. Now, we'll see how long it lasts before some type of failure…scottcollins

so just got this unit instated and replaced 6 years old Titan (220watts)that just hasn't been getting up desire temperature lately. read bunch of reviews and this unit had better ratings . it was easy to switch from old unit as water and power hookups are almost the same . tested and it want keep up with fully open single sink , I had to reduce water flow at inlet pipe . did not measure but it seams im getting aprx. 2 gal a minute. no way to use 2 outlets at same time. btw we are in coastal northern Washington stateromanles

New 11.8 installed. Sometimes will get water at set temp. Most of the time it is well below set temp and will intermittently for short period of time jump up to set temp irrespective of other usage (toilet/sink).Larry

We've had ours for over a year and it works perfectly. We installed it ourselves and found that process relatively simple. The only issue we had was with the exhaust pipe/vent tube. this product replaced a different brand at our off grid cabin that was a problem from the beginning. this water heater works quickly on demand and doesn't have to be at a full heat setting to work, it will work at a warm setting. our other heater had to be a scalding level to stay on and so many times it didn't light at all. this brand lights every time and temperatures are consistent the whole time needed so no more scalding or sudden ice cold showers. install wasn't a problem other than having adjust because of previous brand. this heater isn't too loud either.offgrid9859

I like the fact that the water heater is not burning fuel except when hot water is being used and that it occupies minimal space compared to a tank-type water heater. We use very little hot water for our seldom used kitchen and bathroom, served by the V65ip. It has provided all that we need and have never run out. We were surprised that the V65ip makes very noticeable noise whenever hot water is being used (un-like a tank type heater). We actually resorted to building a 2' by 4' by 8' tall enclosure around the V65ip, due in part to its noise. It takes a minute or so to get hot water once the tap is turned on, even though our longest pipe run is under 20 ft. With the higher initial cost of the Rinnai and had we known about the noise and hot water delay,we would have considered more carefully installing 2 point-of-use hot water heaters for our small application instead. But the Rinnai is filling our need and we won't be changing– hence my recommendation.BK1080

I got tired of running out of hot water after one person took a shower. Decided to go for a tankless because of the unlimited hot water, space saving, and electric bill savings. I can tell you that I am not disappointed! After installation my two kids and wife took long baths before I got in to the shower. The water was extremely hot and I only had the hot water faucet turned up half way (mind you, I do NOT have the tankless set to its highest temp. setting). It was recently installed so I haven't been able to tell how it has impacted my electric bill. Cons: With the unit itself, no complaints. However, to install the unit you need to make sure that you can supply it with the power it needs (three 40 amp, double pull breakers). Before purchasing make sure that you have enough room in your electrical panel to accommodate all of the breakers. I ended up installing everything myself because I received quotes from electricians in my area (Miami, FL) for around $1,500 – $2,000 to do the work (electrical only) in my townhouse. They said if it were a single family house the job would be a lot cheaper, so take that into consideration.saavedra33160

Wonderful product. With being in a Southern climate this unit is more than adequate for a 3 bedroom 2 bath home. Wife a I can both take showers at the same time with no issues. pThis 9 kW unit was a warranty replacement for the first unit I installed. The issue with the first unit was that it showed a constant error code of "EF", which should mean the flow sensor isn't working. The circuit card logic was programmed incorrectly, however, which caused this error code to display even though there was not an issue with the flow sensor. Installation was easy. I tested the replacement unit to get some numbers on water temperature rise versus flow rate. It is February in southern Indiana and the water inlet temperature is 47 deg F. I was able to 108 deg F output water temperature at 2 GPM, and up to 131 deg F (unit maximum) at 1.5 GPM. The unit starts working with about 0.5 GPM flow./pS H.

Anywho, installation was a tad difficult, but customer service is there for you! Now thats its all hooked up we have hot showers again!! The Rinnai is very quiet. I really like that. I dont hear it like the water heater I had. Its small. Not this large ugly gas heater that takes space away. I save money. Does not run every time you use hot water like the old large water heater and you could hear the old style water heater heating the water every time you used hot water. Only been using it for a week but it's really good text a while for you to figure out how to get the water the right temperature have to turn it down it's too hot but other than that it looks good I like it it was easy to install no problem so far I would suggest you put at least a three-quarter inch pipe on it bring the water into the house bring the water to the unit and increases the flow and helps water warm up fasterberorog_guf2sjl3p

A year ago we purchased a new home. I asked the contractor to install a tankless water heater. He installed an electric A O Smith tank unit instead and claimed that he researched tankless units and that they could not keep up with the volume of hot water our three person family would need. We live in a community that provides treated well water. After a year our hot water smelled strongly of sulfer. We were told that the diode in our tank would have to be changed either with a very expensive diode or with the standard one but done annually. Unfortunately A O Smith installs the diode's with a robot or a person that is determined that it would never come out. Removal attempts turned the bolt into a perfectly round piece. It is sunk 6" into the tank which prevents use of a pipe wrench. A new water heater was required or we had to live with the smell. I did my own research and determined that this 2400w tankless unit should provide all of the hot water our family would ever need. I purchased it from Zoro on a Friday and it was on our porch on Sunday when we got home from church. I spent the day replacing the unit. The tankless works great. We are very pleased with it. We have a large tub in our master bath that would only fill half way before the water in the 40 gallon tank model turned cold. Ordered it, my contractor took a look at it and informed me that most serviced residential homes do not have enough amps going to them to be able to run this as well as everything else in your home, for a commercial lot it would be fine. That the service to the home would need to be upgraded, which is an even bigger expense. So beware as to whether you're able to use this.frustrated renos
