Best Thermostat For Home Assistant (2024 Update)

We now have one of these thermostats in each of the 3 zones in our house. I really love the product, but the initial setup to get them connected and accessible via the internet can be frustrating. We've been running the Ecobee with a high-efficiency heater for almost 2 years. We recently replaced that heater with a heat pump and air handler and the tech immediately recommended removing the Ecobee in favor of the Honeywell they installed. I hooked the Ecobee back up and for 2 days the system worked flawlessly. Then for some unknown reason, it just broke. Ecobee calls for heat in the morning, but no equipment runs, and the temperature drops to 10 degrees below the set-point. I tried contacting Ecobee support and was on hold FOR AN HOUR. This is absolutely ridiculous for such a high-priced thermostat that you can't get any timely support as a customer. I have to flip the circuit breaker to get the Ecobee to finally supply heat correctly, but even that was a temporary fix as today, it just wouldn't ask for heat 12 degrees below the set-point. Replacing the Ecobee with the Honeywell and the heat immediately kicked on and returned our house to the desired temperature. I've been recommending the Ecobee the last two years but no more. I have had the Ecobee Smart Thermostat with Voice Control and Alexa built-in for almost 2 weeks now. I am using it to control a Harman P43 pellet stove. It works amazing and is already saving me money on pellets. I also love that Alexa integrated seamlessly with my smart plugs and iRobot Roomba J7 vacuum. So much easier now to just ask Alexa instead of having to open apps. So far, great product! If you need a quality thermostat with all the bells and whistles. This is it!Angela L

We moved into our new build in December. When the weather got hot a couple months ago, we noticed the AC would turn on and then turn off repeatedly, in 5 minute intervals. It seemed the thermostat was installed in a poor location, which caused it to cool down too quickly and then heat up quickly after the AC turned off. After several weeks of troubleshooting we finally tried the ecobee. I bought a couple extra sensors and deployed them throughout the house, and used the clever feature that allowed me to set the thermostat to ignore its own temperature, and only use the readings from the sensors. Since then, our AC has run properly and our house temperature is much more consistent. I had an ecobee in our old house, so I already knew about its other clever features. In my opinion, this is the best thermostat on the market today.j_leth

We had two different Honeywell thermostats. Neither stayed on temp that was set. This one has been amazing from day one. The A/CTNB

Replacement for thermostat that display fried out due to static electricity when I touched it. Ordered same mfg and model. Of course, slight cosmetic difference due to mfg dates. Only issue I found is display on new fixture does not dim when not being programmed or reset. Display remains in constant full bright illumination. May be a setting I missed in installation, but could not find anything in owners manual. It does provide a great nightlight for my hallway!Debbie

TLDR: Would I buy this knowing what I know now? Yes, but I wished there were a few more improvements. The hardest thing to do is wiring up this to your existing setup, but that's really not the fault of Mysa as they lay it out quite simply, but it's just if you're not familiar with home wiring, it gets a bit frustrating. (traveller wire, which one is hot which one isn't, which one is the load, which one isn't… etc). For the unit itself: Pros: – very clean, no hinges, no doors, gets straight to the point and doesn't scream look at me – humidity and temp sensors included – simple control scheme (more on this) – great installation experience (more on this) – pid controller is excellent, learns well and is tuned well Cons: – few dedicated controls and indicators, which leads to lack of feedback (although I think creative solutions are possible to make it work in software as long as the hardware is capable) – wifi only (wish we could have z-wave for home automation without the need of the cloud, experienced the aws servers going down and it affected our usage of the thermostats) App (as of version 2.14.0(305)): Pros: – scheduling is robust enough – control layout mostly makes sense – pairing process was pretty easy – energy consumption layout is excellent – history of energy usage/setpoint/temp/humidity is available and easily accessible – early on feature – eco-mode feature – zoning is great cons: – I want to know if the thermostat is following the schedule, sometimes it says it does, but when we check the history – would like more feedback – interface could be cleaned up (more down below) – scheduling is robust but I would prefer another way of inputting time and temp changes instead of looking at a list of numbers, a graph that could be manipulated would've been better All the home management controls and options should be placed on a separate side panel as opposed to having them clumped together with "account, install&support, manage mysa homes, get more mysas". It would really clean up the experience and not clutter that area. Issues I've had: – aws servers going down, rendering app useless, wish it would tell us this on the app instead of having me google around for it. I was just in the midst of doing some changes on my network during the outage and I thought I did something wrong the entire time, went through the whole process of pairing and unpairing, hard resetting, power cycling… it was annoying. A simple notification connected to their webpage would've solved this issue in no time. – not 100% sure if commands go through to the thermostat – thermostat doesn't follow the schedule even though app says it does but when checking setpoint history, it has not changed. Replaced 3 mechanical baseboard thermostats in a second property with Mysa thermostats to gain the remote monitoring and control capabilities. The operational savings were a nice bonus. Some things to know – They are larger than the old-style box-with-a knob thermostat they replace. The exposed portion of the thermostat could have a smaller form factor – but it fits and looks good. The part that goes into the wiring box fits well with the connection in a two inch deep single gang box. Line-voltage wiring is involved at either 120 or 240vac. The installation is easy if you know how to do wiring – if you do not, I would recommend getting someone who does or an electrician to make sure it is properly installed. the current flows on 120vac installations require attention to the quality of the connections made. Set up could be easier but is a one-time thing and has improved through refinements in the phone app and firmware updates. I had a major network issue (not a problem with the Mysa) about 6 months after the initial installation, that required me to do a factory reset , reinstall, and reconfigure. The second time was much smoother than the first as the aphone app and the firmware had been refined. Make sure you have 2.4 Ghz WiFi – 5Ghz is not presently supported. Works well with Alexa. I have had these installed for just over a year with no issues in operation or performance.Douglas P.

My home uses high voltage electric wall heaters so isn’t compatible with the mainstream smart thermostats. When I found out about Mysa and read up on it on their website, I thought my problem was solved. It even claimed to work with Alexa. I bought 3 of them and had a pro electrician help install them. Once they weee installed, I was immediately disappointed at the LACK of sensitivity of the physical wall thermostat – there is no knob or quick thing you flip to turn the thermostat up or down. Insead you have to press the Up or Down arrow repeatedly, with each push changing the setting 1 degree. As slow and annoying as it would be to do that every time with it working on each touch, the darn screen is nowhere near sensitive enough so you practically have to firm hold your finger down for over half a second each time – and even then it sometimes takes 2-3 tries before you move it 1 degree. For the above disappointing reason, the next logical choice to adjust the Mysa temperature setting in a room is to use the app… Only problem is, it takes up to 5 seconds for the app to fire up every single time you open it. Then there is STILL no quick slider or fast way to adjust it. You still have to click the up or down arrow as many times as needed. So when you are leaving the bedroom for the day, it can take as long as 15 seconds to just change the darned temperature setting. – How is this any more convenient or “smart” than the old knob I had on my dinosaur thermostat?? If you want to save yourself the pain of doing this over and over eaxh day, with multiple thermostats, you can set a schedule. Again, instead of designing this with something SIMPLE like a slider to select the hours you want included and another slider to quickly scroll to the temperature you want it at, you have to manually go in and type what hour you want it to be at a certain temperature, then select the temperature, save it, then repeat the process all over again for when you want it to stop and what temperature you want it to to to when that time stops. All of these frustrating user interface errors and non seamless usage design could easily be overlooked if it proved to be more efficient and save on your energy bills. — At the end of the day, that’s a big selling point they use to justify their large sticker price of over $100 per unit and why I thought it’d be worthwhile to keep them. After using them from December until March, I can conclusively say with certainty: 1. They did NOT lower my electric bill. In fact it is higher. 2. By default, the thermostat makes the heater go in short cycles, as some “eco mode” gimmick. Aside from being annoying having the heater fan fire up and stop 2-3 times within 5 minutes when you’re trying to go to sleep, it’s NOT a fast way to bring a room to a desired temperature. 3. Due to poor design, the heater’s temperature detector seems to pick up the temperature of the hot air rising from the wall unit that 99.99% of home builders place directly below the thermostat. Result? If you are freezing and want the room warmed up from 60 degrees when you walk in to 70 degrees, it starts to heat the room and then detects that the hot air rising closest to the thermostat is 70 degrees and shuts off. After a few minutes, it notices the general room temperature is still quite low so it fires up again… In summary, if they were not such an intricate and extensive process to swap out, I would have ripped them out and sent them back and put my old 1960s looking cadet thermostat wheel back on. Oh, and does it work with Amazon Alexa? If you tell Alexa to raise or lower the temperature, all she does is read you what the temperature is currently set for. Tried to find an Alexa skill to see if that’s what I was missing. There is none. COMPLETE waste of money!Emmett B.

Having read 'good' reviews for the Tado system I purchased the Starter Kit and additional TRVs. Now the problem, connectivity from TRVs to Internet Bridge is very flakey. You can move the Internet Bridge 30cm or less and get connectivity to a room, but lose connectivity to another. The devices do not operate in a 'mesh' configuration. In a fairly standard UK brick and block house, I struggled to get a working system. When I got close, the Tado controller then decided it would randomly not switch off the heating when the target temperature was well below the actual temperature. The App would not switch off the boiler, but the web interface appeared to work. This system looks like a good idea that went into production before fully developed, and now the system design prevents the manufacturer from upgrading. Customer support for Installers is slow at best. When I asked if there was anything I could do to improve connectivity to one room, they suggested moving the TRV nearer, what am I supposed to do, re-plumb the radiator into another room! At the point of removing all Tado and trying for a refund, then looking at another manufacturer. Probably work OK in an apartment/flat, but beware if you have a house. PS. the UK version of the Extension Kit only does SL (switched) control of boiler, so no boiler modulation. As a registered 'Tado Installer' I will not be installing for any customers, as I would have too much grief and too many re-visits trying to get it working.Techy2

Swap your normal TVR (thermostatic) radiator valves for these. They need a controller to hook up to, but are (reasonably) easy to fit and allow you to control the heating in each room. Every day can have it's own routine if required with as many different temperature settings as needed. e.g. Off overnight, on at 18C at 6am, down to 15C at 10am, up to 20C at 12pm, down to 18C at 2pm, etc etc all the way through to midnight. 4 adaptors provided per tado to fit the majority of thermostatic valves. Looking forward to having much more control over when a room is heated and controlling heating costs.PommieSheila

Once satisfactorily installed, these devices are excellent. However if you have oldish radiators installing may be a real problem due to the thread of the radiator TRV valves, which mate with the Tado thermostats being a relaively recent standard. Tado provide adapters for some old TRVs but otherwise, as in my case, i was advised to seek a refund for the five Tado thermostats i had purchased. However since the basic system was installed and working I persevered by heavily modifying two of the supplied adapters and producing a combination adapter that works, not a trivial task. I did not find a way of accessing the Tado TRV compatibility list before registering the purchase of the products.Coloureng

I bought this thinking it would be simple. However the instructions for wiring were poor. I had to phone Honeywell. they I found out this model is no longer supported or manufactured. The programming does not allow you to program for just two events per day. When you push the over ride, the temperature jumps to 62'C. The final straw is that the visibility of the screen is so bad for anything except the temperature. It is no wonder it is no longer supported.Dns2021

We previously had a NEST thermostat but in the cold weather it loses power and will stop working unless you have a wire to the 'C' contact. This was very frustrating to say the least. If you are replacing your old thermostat check first to see if you have a wire to the C contact which most SMART thermostats require. If not then purchase this thermostat and have peace of mind that you will have heat in cold weather.AlleyCat

This model does not have connections for sensor inputs. Because of this it isn't suitable for use with my heat pump. Luckily, because of the high cost of electricity, I quit using the heat pump four years ago and now rely on gas heating. This is a great thermostat for my pellet stove. An exact replacement to be concise. After 16 years the LCD display had become unreadable. The stove only requires a open/close contact function to change it from idle to heat. The thermostat allows for maintaining a lower temp after bedtime and bringing the heat back up at get up time. For pellet stove set the selector switch on the PC board to "electric", not "gas". In the gas function there is a delay, anticipation function to give a gas stove burner time to light. The instructions are lacking for the programming of the unit. That takes a little fumbling until you catch on. Other than that, it is a great buy.rheaumel

The ECO IQ is a little hard to setup, but once set, I rarely fiddle around with thermostat anymore. Also, very nice i can make thermostat change with a phone, tablet, alexa, or other devices with a web browser. Stays connected well, always online when I need to see something on thermostat. Also, the unit has "burst" mode, so if i want to make my room a little colder the change is permanent. The unit requires power, and I had the connect the C wire on both ends, but there are plenty of support options from Wiser, and level of effort to install is pretty low. The unit is medium size. Larger than the nest, and ecobee. The display is crisp and sharp. The background light has a nice glow. And the unit stays dark unless it senses movement. I am giving the unit 5 stars, because it works as described, and i find the size and appearance agreeable.scotttc

It you value your privacy, don't buy Nest (Google) products. Thermostat in your smart home is a pretty important item, being connecting to the Internet directly during 24/7 it can provide a lot of information to the world – even to hackers. While security and privacy concerns are optimized in smartphones, they are not optimized at the same level in smart home devices. I bought this Honeywell Home Wi-Fi thermostat from Home Depot a few days ago at a very good price (they did a price match from a Canadian online store – I have to say that Home Depot has an excellent price guarantee that includes price matching and even price beating by 10%) and I proceeded to set it up after a cursory read of the setup instructions. I must say that I had a tough time finishing the setup, although I'm a rather seasoned DIY person and I know how to deal with this kind of devices. I had installed in advance on my smart phone the 2 free apps that Honeywell offers to their customers in order to control and monitor the thermostat remotely (the TCC and the Resideo apps). The thermostat needs to be registered with Honeywell at their website in order to complete the setup and to connect it to your home router, so be forewarned that you have to go through these hoops first. My problem after connecting it to my home router was that I could not register and connect the thermostat with my Eco device (sporting the Alexa smart assistant), as I was constantly getting the message "we have discovered 0 devices". After going back and forth numerous times, I finally figured it out: I was mistakenly trying to connect to Alexa a "Honeywell Home" device (which my thermostat actually is) when I should have chosen a different option in the Alexa list (the TCC thermostat, not the Honeywell Home thermostat). After adding the correct (but unintuitive) option, Alexa recognized my thermostat and added it to the list of voice-controlled devices. I must say that the accuracy of the thermostat is very good (I compared its temperature with a calibrated thermometer and the match is within a few fractions of a degree Celsius. I'm happy with my purchase and I recommend it, but you have to do your homework before trying to set it up if you want to avoid frustration or even a return to store if you fail to set it up successfully.JohnP

I took a look at the other smart thermostats, but for me, I wanted something that provided a lot of info at a glance. It also helped that it was on sale. Indoor temp+ humidity, outdoor temp+ humidity and set point. Perfect for my needs, now before we go out we just take a quick glance and we know what it’s like outside. Can be controlled from an app on my phone. The background colour is nice too, can be set to match your wall. Installation is easy, as is the set up (although I did have to run a separate “c” wire). Picked this device up yesterday and installed it immediately as my old thermostat bit the dust. I price matched with another store and got a additional 10% off thanks to a tip by a previous reviewer. The installation of this device was rather simple and the wire connectors on the device were very handy, you simply push the wires instead of needing to use a screwdriver. I found it a bit annoying that you had to use a C wire as mine was not connected on the furnace end so needed to do that as well. If I didn't have a C wire this would have been a nightmare to install. Once mounted the setup on the thermostat was simple with guided on screen menus that take you through the various options. There is also a help button on every screen which when selected gives you a brief description of what everything actually does. Connection to my home WiFi was done quickly and easily as well. From the app point of view I will say I'm not wow'd but I am satisfied. I had to go to a website to first create an account and register the device and then could download the app and connect. The app has all the basic functions including, manual temp override, scheduling, fan control and system control. Overall it functions well but could look and flow a little nicer imo. The other thing I noticed is that it doesn't connect to the thermostat in real time, meaning as I adjust the temp it is not adjusting the thermostat. It rather builds a 'batch' of all the changes you make and then when you save it sends them all to the device. This can take time in some instances and seems like this could have been setup more efficiently. Either way, I'm satisfied and it works. The other limitation to the device and app is that there is ZERO reporting of any kind. So if your interested in monitoring your energy use in anyway this is not the thermostat for you. From a usability perspective on the device itself it's very nice. It allows multiple ways to customize the look of the screen and colour scheme. The screen itself for a thermostat is actually very sharp and bright, the touch response is poor at best but since all buttons are large and you rarely need to touch it, I'm OK with it. The device also comes with a link to 'accuweather' via your WiFi which gives you a read out of the outdoor temperature and humidity. While this is nice, I would have liked the option of actually running something outside to control this rather than accuweather. When I initially installed the device the weather was working, once it self-updated the firmware though it broke. I was left with a permanent 'waiting for updates'. After a lot of troubleshooting I discovered that the software is very temperamental with the city and postal code combination. I had to try neighbouring postal codes until it finally populated the outdoor temp. Overall the device has some quirks but I fully recommend it. Just note the few limitations with this device since it's now using 3-4 year old tech.royalewithcheese

If I was to write about everything that is wrong with this thing I’d be writing a novel so I’ll just do the basics. One reason I bought this is its supposed to work with apple home kit. But it doesn’t do that well at all. It’s so very glitchy. It’s supposed to not detect your pets while you’re away and that doesn’t work either and I have very tiny dogs, two chihuahuas. I've now used four of the ecobee3 lite smart thermostats. They are well-built and work very well right out of the box. The only feature that the ecobee3 lite doesn't have that the ecobee3 does have is the ability to run an additional accessory such as a humidifier or dehumidifier. Not a problem if you don't need them. The wi-fi convenience of being able to monitor and adjust the thermostat from your phone wherever you are is really nice. Forgot to set the AC to vacation mode before you left or coming home from vacation earlier or later than you planned? No problem. Just change the vacation mode settings from your phone and you're done.ckalbach

I love just about everything with this themostat. The app feature is the best. I can change the temp from my phone at anytime and anywhere. This is so helpful when I am away on trips and want to make sure I adjusted the temperature. You can also set a schedule for your vacation. The only thing I didn't like is the sensors and this is mostly due to my home. Unfortunately my home is two stories. When I have the sensor in my upstairs rooms set, the air will never turn off. I think these sensors would be better off in a home where the unit supporting them is all on equal floors.dani.g
