Looking for the best trunk bike rack for your SUV? With so many options on the market, it can be tricky to find the right one. A high-quality bike rack allows you to transport your bikes securely and conveniently. When shopping for an SUV bike rack, there are a few key factors to consider:
What’s your budget? Trunk bike racks range widely in price from budget-friendly models under $100 to premium racks over $300. How much you spend should depend on how often you’ll use it and your needs. More expensive racks typically offer greater adjustability, more security features, and increased durability.
How many bikes do you need to carry? Many trunk racks accommodate 2 bikes, but you can find models that hold up to 4. Measure how much clearance you have on the back of your vehicle before purchasing. Also consider if you want the option to transport odd-sized bikes like kids or downhill bikes.
Do you prioritize ease of use? Look for an SUV bike rack with features like quick and tool-free attachment mechanisms, padded contact points, and tilt-down rear access. These make loading and unloading bikes a breeze. Racks that are awkward or tricky to secure can quickly become frustrating.
How important is security? Racks with integrated locking cables and arms that cradle the bike frame rather than just the wheels provide more protection against bike theft. If you frequently park your vehicle in public areas, enhanced security features are worthwhile.
By evaluating your needs and priorities, you can zero in on the ideal trunk bike rack for your SUV. Carefully research brands, read reviews, and inspect build quality before deciding. Investing in a solid, well-designed rack is worth it for safe and convenient bike transportation.

Reviews:
This is a great two bike rack that I had about a year or two ago on my old car. It worked perfect on it! I got a new car last year and just got this rack again for it and it says that it’s compatible with my new car. I used it a couple of times and just now noticed that the bottom part of the rack had dented the trunk and left nasty scratches that now I’ll have to pay for since their customer service is garbage. Don’t put a vehicle on the list that isn’t full compatible… if you get this rack I recommend putting some extra padding on the bottom part of the rack or it could possibly damage your vehicle. It says it holds 70 lbs of bikes. The two bikes I use with it are way less than 70 pounds and the way the trunk is shaped causes it to push in and the metal ends up scraping the trunk. It should be one long foam padding on the bottom instead of one piece of foam on each side.Hunter
This rack might be able to hold two childrens bikes, but definitely not two adult bikes without serious problems. I would imagine the rubbing and bumping together just to get them on the rack would damage the finish…not to mention traveling with them. Theres just simply not enough space between the brackets. Its also the dickens to attach to our Equinox, even though it specifically states that it fits this car. I wouldnt want to carry more than one bike on it, and you need an additional bar (sold separately) to carry a womens bike. We returned it!Beverly
Great price $ and quality. Very solid construction and basic sturdy design. I have a MTB 29,r – 39lb. – this rack can hold 70lb. Single bike racks are usually 35lb. Weight capacity. Only have 1 bike to transport, but didnt want to risk the weight factor. Best thing out there for the $40 dollar price! Highly recommend. WAGWAG

bought to use on a nissan versa hatchback. could not be more perfect for this car. very stable and solid feeling. I never worried about the bikes. on a versa hatchback the only thing to watch out for is the added weight to the hatchback. the hatch will slam shut if you let it with an empty rack on it. the arms fold down when not hauling bikes. a good feature but watch your head when closing the hatch. i take the arms off when not hauling bikes. It should be obvious but the rear wipers don't have room to swing with this installed but not a drawback. overall a great product.gmc4chas
This product *might* fit 3 road bikes but certainly doesn't fit 3 hybrids/mountain bikes. If you are using this for anything other than road bikes, think twice about buying it.McDuff
My coworker gave me one of these racks for free. I just wanted to say if you try to use it on a Honda Odyssey van it will not work due to the plastic spoiler thing the van has above the back window. DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE AN ODYSSEY.Dad

Reviews:
I am not massively experienced with bike racks, but this seemed a good deal at around £32 at time of purchase so I thought I would give it a try. It is very easy to install (under 5 minutes) and holds the bike fairly firmly. There is a single buckle that stops the bike moving towards and away from the car so it is important to make sure it is tightly fastened to avoid you bike bashing into the back of the car under accelleration and braking, but once tight there is little movement of the bike. With that said, a second strap to hold the bike in place would not have been a bad idea. Another thing I hadn't realised was the need for a lighting board due to the bike obscuring the rear lights and number plate, and if you don't have a tow bar socket then you need to install an electrical kit in the boot. I managed to do all that, but when you factor in the extras you legally require, the price is more like £80 (lighting board, electrics kit, duplicate rear number plate) and that is if you are willing to do the electrical work yourself. With that said, it is a nicely made rack, the buckles don't scratch the car and the rack itself is well padded with rubber stops so there is no damage to the paintwork. It doesn't fold flat though, and does take up a bit of space when not on the car so bear that in mind when buying. Would I buy it again? I am not sure, a roof rack carrier avoids the need for a rear lighting board and the roof rack itself can be used for other things so maybe I would have gone down that route instead, but hindsight is always 20/20. If you are specifically looking for a rear mount bike carrier for a single bike then this is superb value for money, if you already have a tow bar or a roof rack then potentially consider some other options available, they may seem more expensive at first but with straps (to stop the wheels moving while you drive), light board, extra number plate, electrics kit, your time to wire it all up and the rack itself you aren't looking at any change from £100.Jetsetjay
I bought this a couple of months ago and I’ve used it twice – the first was to transport my new bike home from Halfords. On both occasions it has led to my paintwork being seriously scratched. When I used it the second time I covered the inner pedal with bubble wrap and secured the wheels but I still got deep scratches. Can’t understand the good reviews for that reason!HanE73
Good simple and solid unit. Nice and easy to attach the bike, and bike seems pretty well secured although the strap to secure the frame doesn't fit an enduro bike very well. Main issue is you need to be very careful about the pedal scratching the car, you can shift the peddle to top position to keep it out of the way, but this needs to be carefully done prior to loading the bike or you are at risk of scratching.Joel H.

Order and delivery within 3 days, nice! It would be helpful if the Saris website provide additional photos of the EX2 mounted on the variety of vehicles it is supposed to fit. One photo is worth 10 pages of written instruction. After a some fidgeting, I managed to figure out the best way to mount the EX2 on my 2022 Subaru Forester. The Saris web site states that the Hatch Huggers are required for the Forester but I found that these Huggers are really not necessary. Besides the Huggers are a pain to juggle while mounting the EX2 to an open door. Also, the $24.99 cost for these Hatch Huggers is questionable. Overall, the EX2 is a quality product and has a durable feel. The upper arm design to clear the door spoiler is great, well done. Mounting should become easier as the EX2 is used more often. Although I have not road tested the EX2 with bikes, I don't anticipate that there will be any issues.bikedad70
I'm using the Bones EX-2 on a 2018 Honda CR-V. I purchased the Bones based on various articles and reviews. I do not have a trailer hitch so that design was not an option. Based on the height of the CR-V and the need for all sorts of rails, a top mounted design was also not a viable option. So far, the EX-2 has met or exceeded my expectations. I did find that if you switch the positions of the inboard and outboard arms, the lower feet will clear the license plate very nicely and rest solidly on the rear hatch, while the upper feet provide solid footing on the rear window. I did find it very important to make sure that the straps are pulled TIGHT so the entire unit is secure. I will note that I am only transporting ONE carbon street bike on the BONES so I can't talk to fully loading the BONES with much heavier steel bikes. Additionally, I found that if you are not using the BONES, you can relocate the arms to an upright position and ON THIS VEHICLE, open and close the deck without having to remove the unit which is a time saver to get into the rear deck compartment. So far…. Very happy with this product.Trek53
I had a hard time finding a bike rack for my little Honda Fit hatchback that wouldn't stress the spoiler. Bones EX-2 does the trick perfectly. Folding/unfolding is quick and easy. Two bikes strap on with no problem. Construction is super solid. I've driven 90 mph with two bikes strapped to it. No shudder or movement. No weird noises. All in all: highly recommended if you want to tote some bikes around without demolishing your spoiler.O'Hagan

Good quality rack with some heft. Overall, easy to install. The built-in lock only works when there are two bikes mounted. I wish there were better instructions or video for when "anchor mode" is required. Didn't come with a wheel strap. Love the bottle opener!Danny D
I decided to purchase this rack because of the two security features – the ability to secure the rack to the car via a reinforced strap thru the trunk and a cable that extends from the end of the rack to lock the bike to the rack. Despite doing all the necessary research to ensure that the rack was compatible with my car (a standard issue 2018 Subaru Crosstrek) before buying this, I had to return it because while the rack fit the car, the security features did not work. The reinforced strap with a loop on one end and a plastic/foam barbell on the other, is supposed to secure the rack to the car by sliding between the two hinges on the hatchback. No matter how hard I (or multiple friendly REI staffers) tried, this strap does not fit through the gap between the vehicle and the hatchback. That means that while the rack itself is compatible with my vehicle, the security strap is not. One security feature down. When fully extended the cable lock, which retracts into the right-hand tube where the bike rests, is so short it really can't even wrap around the outermost bike frame to properly secure the bike. Again the friendly REI staffers confirmed what I had tried dozens of times on my own – it just wont lock because its too short. Second security feature down. I did like the hub feature, and the fact that it store standing up on its own. It seemed like the ZipStrip Cradle system was easy enough to use (although you can definitely lose ZipStrips as they are fully removable). This is a very solid bike rack that is in fact quite heavy. Trying to put this on a hatchback is difficult but doable as long as your strong and have long arms. Just don't expect the security features to work.Maryette
I bought this spring/summer this year, and I love how my bike is held solidly in place with no bouncing around. It takes 3 ratcheting clamps, simple to put on and take off. There is also a locking cable which is a little short, not impossible to secure, can't seem to use ratcheting clamp an locking cable simultaneously. At least I had trouble. They are at same area. The rack is a little heavy, but I like it just the same. It folds up and I keep it in back of vehicle.kc1620

This is practically a 5* item. It fits my 21 Civic Sport Hatchback well and I didn't need to use the spoiler kit since the spoiler has a gap between the window. As installed, the rear wiper works just fine. I thought I was going to have to use the angled rubber bumpers but that was not the case. The flat ones are fine. THIS is where I take a star off. In the step to tighten the cables, it says to crank until you hear 2 clicks. I cannot get to 2 clicks because it pushes so hard on the glass OR the body of the hatch that it literally started to push the glass in away from the seal or create an indentation on the body. So, I settled for to "creaks" of the tightening apparatus. Weird to say but I can confirm it's tight, stable, and is OK. The flexibility to mount the bike(s), move the arms, fit the car, the locking cable (which I didn't even realize was part of it when I purchased), all good stuff. I'm looking forward to many uses of this rack going forward.Peter
Without a hitch mount, I chose this so that it could stay mounted on our hatch and still be able to raise it (something that could not be done with Raceway model). Once mounted, it's sturdy and should work well (I just installed it). My only complaint is with the stabilizer blocks. Thule should include a short block so that the bike can be secured while hanging vertically and not out at an angle. On our SUV the bike hangs close to the rack.alex19
Compact, solid and hold firmly the bike as intended. Do feel the clearance between bike for a two way carrier is tight even if you have spacers between provided. The cable torque that holds the carriage for some reason does not completely lock in place as recommended with a click sound. Instructions as everyone mentioned is completely not helpful at all. You either go through YouTube for a guide and the added harness for the spoiler support is nowhere to figure how it is placed. Also, the packaging of the items with all the moving parts is not well thought off. The boxes inside don't really make any sense to secure the items inside. By the time you receive the big box its either broken or you can hear the parts banging to each other. Thule should have placed this on a rigid foam instead of boxes. Or either put dampers of foam inside so that the parts will be secured in shipping and moving. They cut down on packaging cheaply and price products very expensively steep. Way too steep as if they hold the bars in terms of carriage in the market. Hope this makes sense for the company to make better consumer experience not just for the money.JyCruizer

Reviews:
The Saris Bones 2 bike carrier is small, lightweight, and foldable for easy storage between uses. It will fit on the back of almost any car of any size with it's adjustable straps and movable legs. I use it to carry one bike and it does it easily, I've never tried loading 2 bikes on so not sure how it would go doing that. I like the straps that it uses to lock the bikes in, they are easy to do up and undo, and feel like they would last a long time. The lightweight plastic design makes it easy to setup, dismantle, and adjust whilst on the car. I definitely recommend reading the instructions and also watching YouTube videos to help the first time you set it up, after that it's a breeze. Readjusting the tension of the straps once the bike or bikes are loaded is definitely an important step whenever you are using this bike carrier. You will not regret this purchase.Brendan G.
I used the Saris Bones 2- Bike Trunk Rack to drive 2,000 miles from Denver to Orlando with my tiny 1991 Mazda Miata. The Bones rack worked perfectly. It never budged, shifted, or otherwise made me worry. The bicycle was a bulky square tubed Trek DS-2. I recommend putting felt down where the rack’s feet touch the bumper and trunk as it did visibly buff the paint. I had to get into my trunk 3 times on the trip, and each time was able to quickly remove and remount the bicycle rack and bicycle. I highly recommend this. My peak speed (unintentionally) was briefly 80mph with no adverse effects.
Easy to install and remove and a good solution for vehicles that don't have other rack bases installed. I have only a single complaint, which is that the leg that braces on top (by the rear window) has rubbed a spot on the paint in just two uses even though I cleaned the rack and the car carefully first. My advice is to install a paint protective film on the spot where it sits. Heck, even something easy to remove like blue painter's tape would work. REI should consider selling "landing pads" made by someone like 3M that can be trimmed and applied. Just a clear circle a few inches across would do. Otherwise, the rack has worked well for small kids bikes (20") up to my own 26" mountain bike and is very stable. When unloaded, I can open and close the trunk fairly easily also. The instructions to install are minimal, but it's a fairly intuitive system. Just make sure you are balancing the tension top to bottom and side to side.Jules

I bought this as a birthday present for my husband, so we could take the bike on road trips. This has traveled over nearly two-thirds the length of California, from the Sierra Nevada to the beach, with no issues. Fit perfectly on his hatchback, and held the bike securely over the mountains.eaevansmd
If I could give this negative stars and still write a review I would. This thing is complete junk… Save yourself the time and just spend the extra money on a Thule carrier or similar quality. I cannot express how disappointed I am with this purchase. Doesn't hold bikes very secure, the mechanism the bike attaches to slides around, one slipped completely off once. Thing is a joke. Won't be buying another saris product.By DankDave

Reviews:
After going through 2 hitch racks thanks to being rear ended 4-5 times (big vehicles apparently can't see low hitch racks when parking, or just people in DC can't drive…), I was giving up on bike racks for my car. I had previously been told due to my Ford Focus' spoiler, a trunk rack was out, but then this model was released! I bought it, and am pleased to say it completely cleared the spoiler, with room to spare. We've also used it on my friend's 2017 BWM X3. It does not completely clear the spoiler due to the MUCH larger trunk size, but it does take pressure off the top straps and per Saris, shouldn't cause damage. A thing to note with 3 bike racks–they are a bit like tetris since the bikes sit so close. If you have 3 bikes, identically sized, all with racks and fenders… they may not fit without racks/fenders coming off and some weird maneuvering. On our last trip, we had 2x 54 cm bikes with racks, and 1 58 cm bike with no rack. The 54s went on the outside and inside, with the larger 58 cm bike in the middle. Handlebars crisscrossed over each other, around tires, and the racks. Rags and bungee cords were deployed to keep bar tape safe from rubbing on tires. So it WILL work. It might just take some time to get it right.Emm85
NOTE: You will need bungee cords or straps (not included) to keep your bikes' front wheels from moving around. I bought this after I had to start borrowing a car that did not have a hitch. I wanted a bike rack that was more versatile than my hitch-mount bike rack — something I could use on most cars. The Saris Bones EX fit the bill. I bought one of these and had to return it for another one due to Saris' poor quality control. A Committed To Quality card with a hand-initialed QC Check is included with each rack but the QC checks aren't being properly done. Even though they were brand new, the first one smelled like cigarette smoke and was really dirty. It was also missing one of the two strap management caps. The second one didn't have those problems but the ratchets were installed incorrectly so I had to redo them. The included instructions aren't very detailed so having the ratchets installed incorrectly added to the confusion of mounting this rack for the first time. The Saris rack is fairly sturdy but not as sturdy as my hitch-mount rack. But I guess that's to be expected of just about any trunk-mount rack. Still, I was disappointed to discover my bicycle, a Priority Continuum Onyx, didn't mount completely flush against the rack. The bicycle has a relatively standard frame but the seat tube has about an inch of space between it and where the hold down is attached to the rack. The hold down keeps it somewhat sturdy but there is that inch of space for movement. It seems like Saris could easily redesign the seat tube hold downs to better secure a wider range of bike frame geometries. The bike rack fit a 2018 Honda Fit well and it appears to be able to fit quite a wide variety of vehicle shapes. Overall, despite Saris' quality control problems and my bike not fitting snugly, I still recommend this bike rack due to it's ability to fit a wide range of car shapes.Sammy
The installation was so easy after an installation video. Is very sturdy with no shaking. Won't scratch at all. There was one concern then another arose after my 1-hour drive. First, I was not sure how easy it would be to steal this trunk rack. And, would love for this company to maybe provide a latch locking system because after I press to release the upper and all cords, it comes off easily. Second, the bike small strap furthest to the front crack right off. I thought it was too close to the end with nowhere for the bike to slide if the latch belt buckle strap was to break. So, mine broke and the bike held on by the last to latches. I would definitely buy a cord to secure the last two to prevent from bike falling off. I would want to exchange and extra cables and for it not to break so easily.miriam

I take my kids to biking out in different parks, bike carrier is very helpfull for that.
Used rack for first time to move cross country. The rack was easy to install and stayed securely mounted to my car the entire time – even through heavy winds and rain. Have used for short trips since then and am very happy with how quickly I can get it strapped to my car, get the bike secured and hit the trail!
wish the straps had a better bending mechanism, beside that little thing itès great

So far so good. Fits my little sedan and fits our bikes. I don't have much more input as I've only used it ones but it does the job it's supposed to.Lindsey
Although the compatibility chart indicated this model would work for a VW 2019 Beetle, that does not seem to be the case. Because of a little “spoiler” on the top of the trunk, it is basically impossible to attach the rack securely.NYCSue

Fits our 2018 Golf Sportwagen well and is easy to remove and re-install – with the experience of the first installation behind us, so it does not need to be left on the car, unless you want to. The increase in wind noise from the rack, with or without bikes, is minimal and noticeable only at higher speeds. Clamps are versatile, allowing for use with odd-shaped and large down tubes or bikes without a traditional crossbar without needing an accessory crossbar. Really like that the rack and bikes do not cover the rear lights and license plate. There is no vibration or movement of the bikes, wheels, or handlebars, even at highway speeds or on gravel roads. We're happy with this well designed and built carrier and would buy it again.Steve
On how to install, use the YouTube video provided on the product page, it works better than the paper instructions. Once installed the rack really works nice, the lock of the components is a plus (it locks the bike too). It’s a bit weird in regards of aerodynamics, as the bikes stand above the car top and side ways (sometimes you can feel it on the will depending on the wind speed). It can be a bit tricky to fit more than one bike, as the 2 grabbers are not flexible and have fixed sizes (did actually put a dent on my wife’s bike frame because it moved a bit with the road holes). One thing that is not mentioned anywhere is about the weight of it in regards to the trunk door even when it has no bikes on it. You might need stronger trunk lifter to keep it open, mine can’t just hold anymore and that’s the main reason why did not get a 5 star. Overall is a good and solid product.DcnAL
I bought it twice. First time was received damaged (i believe it had been returned by someone else); however, since really liked decided to give a second shot. Second was received in brand new condition and worked perfect!! I would defined recommend. It is useful, looks very nice and works perfect!Esteban

This is a great bike carrier! I followed the Thule instructions for choosing an appropriate bike carrier for my car and I am very happy with this model! I have had this carrier for two years and it is holding up very well. I have driven hours and hours over all kind of road conditions and my bike always stays secure. The clips that attach to the car are coated to reduce scratching. The carrier is easy to attach to the car and easy to break down/store in the trunk. I am very happy with this product and would recommend to anyone looking for a well priced bike carrier! The only downside to this carrier is that it is hard to fit small frame bikes (like children's 24 frame bikes) on it. I can fit one small frame bike on the carrier, but not two together. I have no problems fitting two bigger bikes on the carrier.outdoorchick207
Easy to install, fits bike perfectly ! It’s pretty sturdy and the bike secures well with the straps . My son who is 15 years of age is able to place the bike on the wrack with no problem. Highly recommendXis
Thule documentation claims that the Thule Passage trunk mount bike rack can be mounted on the back of a 2013 XC70 wagon. However, there are plastic lenses running along the top 80% of the sides of the back of this wagon. As a result, there is no where to attach the side straps. I have contacted Thule for advice. Meanwhile, the best that I can do is to use a homemade accessory strap as shown in the photo. Perhaps Thule should offer such an accessory strap.Joepnick21!

The Bell Bike rack was easy to get out of the box. I like that it holds two bikes so my husband and I can bring our bikes to the local trails. The rack is fully assembled in the box and also has rubber adapters to hold the bikes in place securely. It has a 33 pound weight capacity for the bikes. The rack is a black color so it doesn't show dirt. Another benefit is the bike rack folds up so it is easy to store for later use.KarenS
This bike rack has worked great for transporting my bike. It is being used on the trunk of my Toyota and is fairly easy to use and remove bike as needed. My only complaint is the straps are a bit tricky, but other than that I have been really happy with it. I have used other bike racks in the past and this one is much better than the others. It has not scratched the paint on my truck, which is a plus!kdtnc
It is no joke, you do get what you pay for. I bought this aside from the mostly low scores on the quality factor because it is inexpensive. I am glad that my local store carries this one is stock, so I could easily return it if there were any problems. The most vague installation instructions I have ever held in my hands Don't let the ready to go out of the box fool you. It may already be assembled and ready to be put on your car, but it is awkward to hold while you're having to press the large red buttons in on the sides while trying to figure out which swinging bar goes where. The pictures in the booklet are so tiny, and completely pointless. There is not one picture showing you what the completed install should look like, and which way the arms go. Quick note: the bike rack I have must be a newer version of this one because in the picture the grooves for bike tube are red, mine are black, and mine has a third bar which is suppose to have a purpose, but I haven't figured that out yet. In the booklet it states it is an additional padded support for trunk lid. The hooks are vinyl coated, but still very untrustworthy. I have read a review someone stated using electrical tape as a added benefit. Do make sure the arms have all locked in place before placing on your trunk lid. I made the mistake of not doing so and I have scratches on edge of trunk lid from the metal plates sticking out around the large red button you have to press in to release the arms. Instead of grooves being formed into the bar which will be holding your bike, there are rubber sleeves with Velcro straps used to secure bike. I have a 26" cruiser bike, I used the grooves farthest away from car, otherwise it wouldn't fit, the rubber sleeves gradually slide back towards the car trunk lid. I do understand why the company made in that way #to adjust for different size bikes#, but maybe making the bar a rough texture so the bike sleeves wont slide back. That could possibly cause damage to bike and/or car. Now I do like how secure the rack is once mounted and straps are tight. The well padded bars that make contact with your cars trunk lid is a plus. The rack actually makes its very easy to work on your bike too. If you do not have a stand, or hate bending over to repair tires just secure your bike on the rack and it is at perfect height. Made it simple to change kick stand. Everybody has different opinions and experiences, and that is exactly what this is. If you are at all interested try it out, and go from there. From reading the other reviews some people have had great use out of them.Augustbug

WAGWAG

Seemed like itd be a great bike rack for the price and ease of installation , they worked for my trip of 3k miles but by the end the arms that the bikes are held on were shaky with all the bikes weight on it, it was because the black plastic part had a small split in it. But they held my bikes up for the whole trip safely for the most part , i just didnt trust it afterwards from the shakiness it had it wasnt solid anymore when it had the weight of 3 bikes on it. Easy to install for the most part, straps tie down to the trunk of your car and frame rails in the bumper.. Load bikes up tie down and go.. Just as easy to take off works for multiple cars just have to adjust settings. Id try to get another again id just make sure the black plastic holders that say thule on it doesnt have a split in it.Ethix
Thule finally contacted me today… a month after reaching out and after the purchase saying this rack was not a fit for my new 2020 Jeep Compass and that they didn't know if they would even make one… the rack did work and worked well. The design doesn't really allow for a multitude of different bikes. You really have to wiggle them.on and tied them down good. The straps worked great and I was able to carry a bike 400 mi to the shore. Its flimsy with 3 bikes that it is actually made for… bouncing too much. This rack doesn't come with protection for your car so buy in advance. Overall it works well for one or two plain bikes but three or cruisers and mountains… be ready to have some issues.Smithpgh
We purchased this bike rack but returned it after 1-2 weeks. The straps on this thing are really stiff which could be a good thing but because of that, the little knobs they go over start to break quickly. Once those knobs break off the bike is no longer secured. We then returned it and got the sportrack instead which seems much better even though it is cheaper. (your experience may be different of course)Andre

Just recently purchased this rack for my daughter to take her new bike to college. Instructions were terrible. The guy from the bike store where we purchased the rack was kind enough to help us install. However, less than 30 minutes into her trip to school the straps began to come undone and the bike came off the cradles. Straps were tightened again and 5 minutes on the road later they had come undone again. Had to stop yet again less than 1 hour into her trip and purchase a bungee cord to keep the bike from coming off the rack completely. Also, the hooks that connect to the car have scratched the paint during first use. This bike rack does NOT keep your bike secure. Wish I had purchased a different bike rack.Upset dad
I bought this bike rack about a month ago to use on a 2015 VW Golf and it has been really excellent. I have only put 2 bikes on it so far but it is completely solid on short trips and when used for a 300mi trip I stopped to tighten the straps once to be safe, but it was still very solid overall. My biggest complaint is that the instructions for installing it are terrible. The instructions feature hardly any text, relying entirely on illustrations making it difficult to follow at times. It probably took an hour to finally get it installed properly. Also, tightening the straps (which is very important for keeping the rack sturdy) requires a good amount of strength to do, so I couldn’t tighten it as much as I’d like without help. Overall, it’s a good bike rack, but the instruction manual needs a major update.chelseat
I opted for the 3 bike option and, unless I remove the pedals off all my bikes, I will never be able to fit three bikes on the rack. Not only would the bike closest to my car scratch my car, it's already a tight squeeze with 2 bikes on the 3 bike option. The system is also really difficult to fit on most mountain bikes because the support buckles are so large, which is super unfortunate. We ended up having to get another bike because one of our mountain bikes was completely impossible to get on the rack because it's frame wasn't the standard "triangle" Thule assumes it is. It is also a huge pain that there is no built in way to lock it to your car (and the car lock Thule sells separately can be easily cut), so we have to disassemble it and put it away in our car every time we go on a trip so that we can be sure it isn't easily stolen. That's a big pain too. All that said, I'm glad I got this as it is going the job for now. But, I will likely consider upgrading to something more expensive because I am also pretty disappointed. Bought the Thule Gateway Pro 3 for a 2010 chevy cobalt.April1234

Set up was easy and it felt secure. However I wasnt pleased about the metal part of the strap that latches on to the car. It had no protective fabric to keep it from potentially scratching my car. I loaded only one bike thus far, a MTB. I had to definitely tie down both of my tires to avoid it spinning and shaking on the highway. Otherwise, it is a decent rack with an old school design that works!Lena
This product available from 99 Bikes is just fantastic, the quality of its manufacture is excellent as is the engineering that must have gone into its development, fits onto the boot of my Ford Fairlane and does not block the number plate in anyway leaving a clear view for my rear camera with my bike attached. It’s a great product from the USA. 99 Bikes service was also great , delivery was within time line and in perfect condition .Peter
This bike rack Is not very strong whatsoever I have one electric bike but it is small 20th fold away bike and it is not very heavy in comparison to other electric bikes. It looks like a bmx bike with a battery. I do not feel safe connecting my bike to this rack. The rack is made for 2 bikes and I am only using 1 bike and it still doesn't feel safe. I have the smallest battery ever made and the bike is still pretty light by industry standards but the rack makes me feel uncomfortable. If it's said in I add that this was for children's bikes I wouldn't have bought it but I haven't returned yet because I tossed the Box and it's almost not worth it considering the price that was paid which was fair but I just do not like the lack of input in the add.mikevigg

I love this rack. Just got into biking about six months ago. This rack fits my needs. Its easy to install and remove. Compact and lightweight. Easy to load up your bike and holds it well. I actually tried a different rack before and it didn't hold the bike well (arms were too narrow). have driven to a trail 35 miles away and this rack held up. My suggestion would be to package them with twist cables like what I have in the pic to prevent the bike from swaying. For an entry level rack and price, I have no complaints and would definitely recommend it.
I bought this as it's similar to one my aunt had, but there's one major difference I'm knocking two stars off for. On my aunt's, the strap that holds the bike was independent of the "saddle" that the bike rests in. So you could swing the strap out of the way to put a bike on the inner saddles. But the main drawback to this new (or older?) design with the strap and saddle being one piece is that the saddle is not locked into place like my aunt's was. So if you put a bike on the outer saddles it will slide down the rack, and your pedals can end up banging on the bumper or trunk causing scratches. My solution was to drill a hole just behind the saddle and stick a shower curtain ring through it, though a cotter or clevis pin might look a little more professional. So with one small mod it's a decent rack for the price, and certainly better than the $150 my LBS wanted for their rack.burcs
We bought our Sentinel 3 rack to carry our sons bike back home from school, a trip from Connecticut to central North Carolina. Following the instructions and using the correct accessory straps, we were able to mount it on the Kia van we had to come home. I checked it every 30 minutes at first then each stop we made ever 2 hours. It never budged. It was solid as it could be. Because the pads are foam and all the strap hooks are coated, it did no damage at all to the vehicle. We were very happy with it. We only used it that one time but that was a trip of over 600 miles.JonL
